Bocci Office
In 2005, Bocci was founded in a red barn surrounded by hay fields, on the periphery of Vancouver, Canada. The company launched with one product, 14, which became an instant classic and remains a design staple and bestseller. Today, Bocci has a growing portfolio of contemporary design ranging from light installations through to furniture and electrical sockets. All Bocci designs are developed, engineered, and fabricated in-house through an infrastructure calibrated to provide full control over technique, quality, and scale.

Bocci Creative Director Omer Arbel explores the intrinsic mechanical, physical, and chemical qualities of materials as fundamental departure points for making work. His interdisciplinary practice spans multiple scales and cultural-economic contexts to include architecture, industrial design, materials research, sculpture, invention, and high craft manufacturing. Arbel’s work has been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Mallett, and the Monte Clark Gallery, among others.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2005. 14 is an articulated, cast glass sphere with a frosted cylindrical void that houses either a low-voltage xenon or LED lamp. Individual pendants are visually subtle, but gain an atmospheric quality when multiplied and clustered in groups.
14.1m allows for a variety of compositional possibilities, ranging from ambient to punctuated dense clusters in specific high profile locations.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2015. 16 is formed by sequentially pouring three separate layers of coloured, molten glass – in varying opacities – on a horizontal plane. Each layer responds to the indeterminate shape of the previous pour to create a uniquely layered whole. Two of these pieces are then attached and illuminated with an internal LED lamp. The finished 16 is visually complex: each separate colour layer is visible through the other layers, with light reflecting along the edges. A modular armature system connects the glass pieces to a series of branches and stems. Each armature segment carries low-voltage electricity and diverges into 2-4 separate branches, allowing both vertical and horizontal deployment with an infinite variety of possible forms. The branches simply click together during installation for custom, on-site arrangements.

Armature Components
Multiple 16’s are supported by a modular armature system comprised of a series of branch and knuckle components, which may be composed to create a tree-like structure. The armature includes a kit of interchangeable parts that simply click together for on-site composition. Each segment carries low-voltage electricity and diverges into 2-4 separate branches, allowing for both vertical and horizontal installation. Branches and knuckles come in small, medium and large diameters to allow for both structural integrity and compositional lightness, allowing a very wide variety of possible configurations.

The armature enables unique installations ranging from modest to monumental, simple to complex, in an infinite variety of possible forms, including trees emerging from the ground, chandeliers emerging from the ceiling, and open ended creeping compositions emerging from ceiling, floor and/or wall surfaces. The armature can also be used on tabletops and in a floor lamp configuration.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2011. 19 results from re-interpreting the technique of sand-casting brass. Instead of eliminating the overspill (or waste) associated with the process, it is encouraged and celebrated. A round shape is pressed into the sand with a sand plug suspended above. The resulting void between the sand layers is filled with molten brass – encouraging a generous and unpredictable overspill along the open perimeter. The high copper content in the brass oxidizes immediately upon contact with air, producing a coarse and highly textured overspill. This stands in contrast to the smooth, non-oxidized interior, which is hand-polished to a mirror finish. 19.280 is unlimited production, numbered and signed. 19.540 is a limited run of 95 pieces, numbered and signed. 19.800 is a limited run of 19 pieces, numbered and signed.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2007. 21 results from a fabrication process in which thin porcelain sheets are draped over an inverted diffuser made of sandblasted borosilicate glass. The thin porcelain skin is allowed to dress the borosilicate core in whatever form occurs naturally – creating a unique shape in every iteration of the fabrication process. Each glass diffuser houses a low-voltage xenon or LED lamp. A strong contrast occurs between the soft, organically distributed light passing through the white porcelain skin and the crisp light moving through the glass diffuser. 21s are designed to cluster in groups, with individual pieces touching each other to create a layered composition in three dimensions.

21’s work best when mounted in groups, such that the pieces touch each other to form clumps. The relatively simple shapes of the individual pendants, when placed in a group, make a complex sculptural form.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2006 22 is a suite of electrical wall accessories designed as an alternative to the ubiquitous cover plate model. A spring-loaded barrel system allows an operative component of any sort – including a plug, switch, data outlet, cable, USB, or telephone jack – to pop into a receiving system mudded directly into drywall, or set into a sheet of finish material (marble, wood, stone, tile, etc.). The complete assembly results in operative components that sit flush with the surrounding wall surface, without visible cover plates.
22 was born of a desire to eliminate the ‘visual noise’ of various uncoordinated electrical devices cluttering most wall surfaces.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2009. 28 results from an innovative fabrication process that manipulates both the temperature and the direction of air flow into blown glass. 28 is formed by creating a conventional glass-blown sphere and allowing it to cool, then using a blowtorch to create a hot patch on the circumference. A different colour of super-hot glass is dropped into the heated exterior patch and air is pulled out of the piece – creating a vacuum inside the original sphere, to which only the very hot, recently introduced glass can respond in a controlled implosion. The result is a slightly distorted sphere with an interior landscape of satellite shapes, including an opaque milk glass diffuser that houses either a low-voltage xenon or LED lamp. 28’s may be suspended using coaxial cable in hexagonal clusters, composed in ambient groupings, or mounted using a specialized copper tube suspension system. Standard 28 pendants are made with clear glass exterior spheres and milk white diffusers. Custom 28’s can be crafted in near-infinite colour variations. Due to the handcrafted nature of this piece, the size, colour depth, tonality, and both number and location of interior satellites will vary.

A flexible copper suspension option is available for all 28 pendants – providing a different compositional reading that results from shaping the copper tubing during installation. Pendants can be angled in any direction to provide a range of sculptural forms. The copper will weather and tarnish, registering the passage of time in its patina.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2012. 38 pushes the fabrication technique originally developed for 28 to its technical and material limits. A large glass sphere is blown with a multitude of haphazard interior cavities, which intersect and collide with each other in unpredictable ways. Several of these satellite cavities are deep enough to hold earth and succulent or cacti plantings, while others house lighting elements. Each 38 contains two or three lighting elements per large sphere, and one or two planters. A stiff copper tubing system provides electricity and suspension, enabling compositional freedom on either the horizontal or vertical plane. The copper tubing crinkles and bends during installation, occasionally supporting a small standalone planter (called a “moon�), which appears to have escaped the confines of the nearest 38 sphere. Due to the handcrafted nature of 38, pendant size, diameter, shape, and the number and location of interior satellites will vary.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2013. 57 results from a fabrication process whereby air voids of different sizes and configurations are composed within a larger mass of dark grey glass. These air pockets are invisible when the piece is unlit, and come alive to reveal an interior universe when 57 is illuminated. By virtue of the method of making, each 57 is completely unique. A flexible suspension system enables pendants to be nestled in close-knit groups or loosely composed in a wider field, allowing each piece to be perceived individually.

Designed by Omer Arbel, 2015. 73 results from blowing liquid glass into a folded and highly heat-resistant ceramic fabric vessel. The resulting shape has a formal and textural expression intuitively associated with fabric, which becomes permanent and rigid as it cools. A flat LED is positioned to fill the resulting volume with diffuse light, accentuating the volumetric perception of the piece. By virtue of the loosely controlled manufacturing process, each 73 is completely unique in proportion, size, and shape. 73s are intended to nestle together in groups, creating complex compositions that resemble clouds.

Bocci offers consulting, design, and fabrication services for custom lighting in unlimited configurations – from modest to monumental. We can create ceiling canopies according to your specifications, in any material or finish. For clients who want to explore their own paint finishes, we offer a primed mild steel canopy. In addition to our standard pendant offerings, we produce several variations, which are available for both standard lighting and custom installations. Blown glass 28 pendants can range from 5-11” / 130-280 mm in diameter, in a variety of colours. See our custom colour catalogue for a complete list of options. In addition to the classic 14 clear glass pendants, we offer grey and amber. We also offer a 21 pendant in intrinsically dyed, charcoal grey raw porcelain. Bocci’s in-house design team will work collaboratively with you to develop each custom piece – from concept to design drawings, through to production. We use your CAD files and parameters as a departure point to create detailed 3D renderings, shop drawings, and installation instructions for your piece.

Wet Location
Projects Since its inception 10 years ago, our studio has been fascinated with large, bespoke, site-specific light installations. At the beginning, these were primarily theoretical exercises intended to explore new ideas. Over time, and with increased opportunity, some of our most ambitious concepts have come to fruition – creating a culture and a team that thrives on custom work. Highlights of Bocci’s bespoke installation program include 28.280c, a monumental installation in the grand atrium of the Victoria & Albert Museum (London, 2013); 28.450, a major installation at the offices of Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (Berlin, 2014); 16.480, an outdoor public installation in Vancouver’s downtown core (Vancouver, 2015), and 57.157, a sprawling piece at the Canadian High Commission (London, 2015), Bocci’s in-house design team works closely with organizations, institutions and individuals to create unique, bespoke installations – from concept through to engineering, fabrication, and on-site installation support. The process is collaborative, dynamic and location-specific. Our team takes great pride in these commissions, which allow us to explore new fabrication methods and spatial opportunities.

The 28.280c descended through the 30-metre tall, central void of the grand atrium in London’s Victoria and Albert museum. The intent of the installation was twofold: it offered a pure celebration of the building’s monumental height – using light to crystallize a powerful, immersive experience – while presenting the most ambitious exploration to date of the novel glass-blowing technique used to fabricate the 28.

57.157 CANADA HOUSE Febuary 2015
57.157 is a large-scale light installation comprised of 157 individual 57 glass pieces. This bespoke installation responds to the abundant natural light in the Canada House stairway – giving visitors a poignant way to perceive and inhabit the room. 57.157 introduces stratified layers of reflective, one-way mirrored glass that respond both to each other, and to the ambient light that floods the stairwell. The tension between eye-level pieces and a high tangle of glass and wire produces areas of intensity and relative calm, creating a haphazard composition that spills from the atrium into the surrounding spaces.

16.480 is a dramatic installation of 480 glass 16s supported by a set of site-specific, tree-like minarets. These “trees” rise out of a landscape constructed of burnt wood planks and form an immersive canopy of light that reaches up to 6 m in height. Bench platforms and higher mounds in the landscape serve the combined purpose of protecting the trees from vehicles, providing refuge to visitors, and creating informal meeting places.
