Mass Productions 2016-2017

Page 1

In 2009 two designers, sharing a neo-modernist vision of functional, elegant design, decided to break free of PR-driven product strategies to create a furniture company focusing on the interplay between object and context. In order to realise their vision, they assumed control of the entire production chain – manufacturing, sales and marketing. The name Massproductions alludes to the beauty of efficient, sustainable, high quality industrial production. By working closely with the engineers and machine operators at their production facilities, Massproductions ensure the integrity of their vision down to every cut and bend. Holistic understanding of the manufacturing process – from tools to materials and environmental concerns – not only makes the whole process more efficient, but adds clarity and purpose to the designs. Building on the functional elegance of modernism, Massproductions brings its core principles into the postdigital era. This translates to multifunctional, highly adaptable products – a smart, contemporary toolbox for architects and interior designers.

“It’s the processes, the machinery and the materials that inspire me, rather than some fantastical vision that I want to turn into reality. My designs emerge from a very physical reality. Chris Martin, Designer-in-Chief

Ferric is a multifunctional table, built for hard work, creative conferences and delightful dinners. In fact, you can join segments together for a five meter long table, providing ample room for all those activities at once. The wooden top rests on a steel frame carefully optimized for stability and sustainability – a well-balanced design evoking the industrial design of Jean ProuvÊ.

In recent years the reigning interior design philosophy, both in homes and in offices, has been shared, open spaces. Endless is a free-standing wall of shelves that cuts through those open spaces, making room for both privacy and the objects of life and work. The shelf segments join together, supporting each other as they lean in opposite directions. If you need a see-through room divider Endless performs that function from the get go. If you need a wall that closes off a space from sight and sound, just jam Endless full of books and objects from both sides. The shelves make a rhythmically billowing wall, creating new rooms within a room. Whether in a home or an office, it’s an intelligent way of adding storage, style and functionality.

The original Tio chair was the result of a meticulous investigation into the properties of steel wire, months of research that resulted in a unique product that won many hearts and many accolades. Now the chair is accompanied by a lounge chair, a bar stool and several variations of tables and accessories, all designed to work in different settings, indoors as well as out. The Tio Collection’s skeletal design may have a unique kind of swagger, but the pieces easily blend into different rooms and environments. After all, those fine steel wires and their palette of soft colors are only part of the story; Tio is mostly form and air.

The Tio series is Massproductions’ signature collection, appreciated by architects and private clients around the world. In the 2016 collection, Tio gets a refresh with a range of new colors. Four of the original colors are left untouched and six new are added. From ochre yellow to autumnal red and reindeer moss, many are inspired by nature, while the solid black, white and grey lend a crisply graphical and urban feel. The Tour Eiffel brown (Pale Brown), on the other hand, is a nod to another timeless piece of steel construction. Pastel Turquoise RAL 6034

Sustainability is very much built into the core concepts of Massproductions. The company’s fundamental approach to furniture production relies on intelligent, economic application of materials and rational manufacturing in volume, with minimum waste. All of Massproductions’ furniture is built to last, both physically and aesthetically. Many products are made in a single material, and when a combination of materials is necessary, they are easily separable for recycling. The wood is sourced from sustainable forests and wherever possible recycled material is used. Safe glues and paints are, of course, also used throughout.

Anyway is the adaptable sofa that effortlessly snakes through a room, hugging the walls, navigating around corners, or creating free-standing ridges. The slim profile is achieved through an engineering trick where ingenious use of steel tubes makes the delicate shape robust. Five types of segments can be joined together, with curves at 30 or 90 degrees, internally or externally. There are also two options for seat height and back height, and for a perfectly tailored fit elements can even be custom-made. This adaptive seating system affords you maximum flexibility when furnishing your space, while adding a touch of its own congenial personality.

While Chris Martin is a true design specialist, Magnus Elebäck is the main force behind the innovative strategy of building a lean, vertically integrated company, designing products in-house, partnering with carefully selected manufacturing facilities and selling to a global market. To Designer-in-Chief Chris Martin form is a byproduct of function, materials and production processes. He has been called a minimalist but in fact he’s a radical pragmatist, drawing inspiration from the production line rather than from artistic imagination. In his own words, “We make real products for the real world, developed at our own pace.” The designs tend to be the result of thorough research, exploring the properties of promising materials – steel wire, cold-cured foam, wood – and Chris Martin figuring out the best way to make them do his bidding. Even when the design challenges are hard the end result looks simple. When you make smart, usable pieces of furniture you don’t need flamboyant gestures. Beauty comes naturally. Magnus Elebäck is a designer turned entrepreneur and CEO, devising Massproductions’ unique way of doing business. By controlling the entire production chain, the filters inherent in a designer/producer relationship are removed. A seamless, fully transparent design and manufacturing process gives Massproductions the ability to create products that would otherwise be hard to conceive, or risk getting stuck in the development process. Once Elebäck and Martin have settled on a design, they work directly with the engineers at their manufacturing facilities to make sure the end result conforms to their exacting standards.

“In one sense it’s easy to create a chair. On the other hand, if you really care about chairs and you want to make a contribution, then it becomes really difficult.” Chris Martin, Designer-in-Chief
