The fast-paced page-turner that tells the story of the world's most famous vampire celebrates its 125th anniversary this May! First published in 1897, Bram Stoker's Dracula has to be one of the darkest novels ever printed. Partly inspired by a stay in the harbour town of Whitby on the East Yorkshire coast, the atmospheric locations of the Gothic novel include the imposing ruins of Whitby Abbey and ensure that the sinister count is always associated with this seaside town. To mark 125 years of the novel, which has been translated into multiple languages, inspired over 200 feature films and has never been out of print, English Heritage are running a series of events
between May and October 2022 starting with Dracula’s Story over the May half term and culminating in the much-loved Illuminated Whitby Abbey which runs for 11 nights over the Halloween half term. As well as exciting events, a new, temporary interpretation panel positioned on the headland behind the abbey ruins and looking out towards the 199 steps, St Mary’s Church and the town will tell the story of the property’s connections to the story of Dracula and Stoker. It will identify and highlight points of interest and why Whitby town and the Abbey itself were such an influence on Bram Stoker and the story he created. Inside the museum, a first edition copy of Dracula is on display and the popular audio guide which takes visitors through the ruins will be enhanced to highlight the Dracula connection.
