Now in its tenth year, Scottish Food Fortnight is a celebration of the food and the people who grow, cook and sell produce reared on or harvested from the country’s fertile fields or caught from the rivers, lochs and ocean. The annual event runs until 15 September and includes foraging walks and food workshops in Lanarkshire, Fife, Moray Speyside, Forth Valley, Loch Lomond and on Orkney. Combining coastal discovery with herbal wellness experiences, wild food feasts and evenings around the fireside listening to talks, Scottish Food Fortnight is an ideal time to discover just how delicious Scotland is.

Royal Highland Hotel Inverness, Inverness-shire IV1 1LG
Inverness makes a great base for discovering Scotland’s natural larder and the Royal Highland Hotel is an ideal choice of stay for sampling regional produce from the restaurant’s menu. The hotel dates back to the mid 19th century and the restaurant backdrop is an elegant testimony to this bygone era. Speciality dishes include seared breast of duck, pan seared seabass and samphire, lamb shank and canon of venison saddle. Naturally Scottish traditional dishes like haggis, neeps and tatties are on the menu and Balmoral or Glenmorangie
10
chicken are popular main courses with diners too. In addition to dining in the hotel’s Ash restaurant, the Gallery Café is a firm favourite with guests and visitors. With an impressive view of the hotel’s grand staircase, thought to have inspired the design of the ballroom staircase on the Titanic, guests can enjoy seafood risotto, North Sea haddock and chips and Scottish salmon, among many other delights. The Royal Highland Hotel offers guests a choice of single, twin, double and royal rooms with a hospitality tray, TV and free WiFi.

Kilmarnock Arms Hotel Peterhead, Aberdeenshire AB42 0HD
A staggering two thirds of the world’s langoustines are landed in Scotland. Between the months of May to September, the Kilmarnock Arms Hotel has local lobster on the menu. Available with a day’s notice, head chef Matthew Lobban recommends the freshly caught lobster is simply grilled so as not to spoil the delicate flavours. With a real passion for fish, Matthew has access to the daily catches at Peterhead and Fraserburgh, just north of the hotel. These are Europe’s largest white and shellfish ports so diners at the Kilmarnock Arms are certain of fresh, quality ingredients in dishes designed to be savoured. For a luxury surf and turf dish, we recommend you add a 21 day, dry aged Highland Angus beef fillet to the grilled lobster! Crispy pork belly and the steak and ale pie are additional highlights to sample, plus the cheese board from Devenick Dairy. With a lovely wine list and a whisky menu too, guests will retire to their rooms with that satisfyingly contented feeling!
12
The hotel accommodation consists of 19 individually designed rooms with Freeview TV and Brodies tea and coffee making facilities plus free WiFi. Located in Cruden Bay, this property is just a short stroll from the beach, harbour and the imposing ruin of Slains Castle, the inspiration for the once regular hotel guest Bram Stoker.

SOMERSET
For eight days in November some of the streets in Somerset are a sparkling scene of carnival processions. These night time celebrations feature up to 40 carts, often up to 30 metres long and each one illuminated with over 20,000 lights and costing tens of thousands of pounds to create. Originally dating back to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, these are thought to be the largest illuminated processions in the world. Today’s carnival attracts visitors from across the UK; up to 150,000 people line the streets in Bridgwater where the event always starts. Taking place from Saturday 2 November and finishing in Wells on Friday 15 November, the carts will have paraded through the streets of Highbridge, Burnham-on-Sea, Westonsuper-Mare, North Petherton and Shepton Mallet. Many of the visitors to Somerset over this period stay for more than one carnival, soaking up the electrifying atmosphere and marvelling at the 2.5km long parade of themed creations that have taken thousands of hours to make.

If it’s nightlife you’re after, Newcastle was voted in the top ten of the country’s nightlife spots.
At 73 miles long, the River Tyne is formed by the North Tyne and South Tyne rivers which join at Warden Rock, near Hexham in Northumberland. Visitors to Newcastle can take in the views of the river from the Tyne Bridge, which was opened in 1928 by King George V. Opened in 2001, The Gateshead Millennium Bridge makes it possible for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the river from Gateshead Quays art quarter to the Quayside of Newcastle where there are plenty of trendy restaurants and bars. Chinatown, the Life Science Centre and the Discovery Museum are more stand-out attractions suitable for the whole family. A trip to Newcastle isn’t complete without a visit to the Angel of the North. Designed by Anthony Gormley, the 20 metre high steel sculpture is a striking landmark that has become the most talked about piece of public art. And of course, there’s an abundance of history too. Newcastle castle is an impressive example of a medieval castle keep and provides visitors

For a touch of Victorian elegance, the Grade I Theatre Royal which dates to 1837 is recognised for having one of the finest theatre facades in the country. It’s also the place to catch the latest big touring productions, including West End musicals, ballet, comedy and pantomime. If it’s nightlife you’re after, Newcastle was voted in the top ten of the country’s nightlife spots.
