Too often in Dubai, people moan about what’s missing, what’s changed, what they don’t have. But here at Infusion Towers, we like to shine a bit more positivity on life. And as our life revolves around music, we thought it was high time we created Infusion’s musical manifesto, a call to arms about what music should be, what it should represent, how it should be made and consumed. So we spoke to the city’s promoters, musicians, DJs and our readers to get their thoughts on what music should be, rather than complaining about what it isn’t, and you can read the results in our main feature. Elsewhere in this issue, we talk to hyperactive rave pioneer Kissy Sell Out, talk to A Tribe Called Quest’s DJ ahead of his visit, and we’ve tweaked the album reviews to bring you even more of the good stuff.

What we did
Carl Craig @ Trilogy
A month is a long time in clubland. Musical trends come and go (we mourned the loss of Peruvian flute funk during that time), DJ careers can crumble and fall (yes, Paris, we’re laughing at you) and DJ technology has moved into the 22nd Century (thanks to Pioneer’s soon-to-be-released wireless set up). So it’s fair to say that the beat-hungry crowd at Trilogy were clamouring for a big night out, and Carl Craig and club resident Ejaz didn’t disappoint after the Ramadan break. Busy from early, the night moved swiftly through the techno gears, with Detroit native Carl Craig in particular playing a diverse set full of highs and lows, taking the crowd on that much-fabled journey. With a line up including Sasha, Hot Creations’ Lee Foss and birthday headliner Mark Ronson in the coming month, you can expect plenty more dancefloor journeys ahead.
Dust @ Music Room
Variety is the spice of life, a wise man once said, and that’s true at monthly Music Room party DUST. As happy playing future bass as they are digging deep for lost funk and soul, they’re constantly keeping the music fresh. Which is why they’ve attracted a like-minded group of followers who make the monthly pilgrimage to Bur Dubai. This installment featured a return to the decks for DJ Solo who played (in his words) Motown to Funk to Reggae to Indian Hawaiian Guitar Music to Hip Hop to Electro to Broken Beat to Future R’n’B to the Flashdance Theme Tune (sorry!) to Boogie. And if that sounds like your bag, the team will be back on September 21 for their first birthday with Jordan’s hip hop legend DJ Sotusura headlining proceedings.

Local News
Join the clubs It's the start of the new season, and inevitably alongside all the 'my event is the biggest in the region, ever!' claims, there are a barrage of new venues, each clamouring for your hardearnt dirham. We start off with the Meydan Beachclub (meydanbeachclub. com) on JBR (pictured), which is an ideal spot for sundowners, with Infusion favourite Pierre Ravan the weekend resident there. Sticking with the beach club theme, Villa Romana St TropezDubai is a soon-to-open high end Italian bar and lounge which has a big reputation to live up to thanks to its French sister (facebook.com/villaromana.sttropezdubai). Unique bars are hard to find in this city, but the 20s themed Speakeasy at the Ramada on JBR has definitely found its own niche. Beautifully done out, and with plenty of nice touches, it just needs a proper swing (or maybe an electro-swing) night to make the venue really stand out (ramadaplazajbr.com). And heading into 3am territory, we turn to the proper clubs. Barsha and Tecom has been flourishing of late with Chameleon, Rock Bottom, Catwalk, Rare and Casa Latina all a short taxi ride away. And the latest is Silk in the Grand Excelsior Hotel, which has snapped up long-running minimal night Glitch as well as funky house night Sunstroke as part of its roster(facebook.com/ ClubSilkDubai).
Chili Peppers still rocking
Despite the reports of unrest in Beirut recently, the city's club and live music scene remains largely unaffected, which is good news for the hundreds of Red Hot Chili Peppers fans who are heading over from Dubai for their show on Thursday September 6. The gig is now fully sold out (and going ahead at time of print), so you'll just have to be happy jealously checking the FB and Twitter reviews.
Atelier line up
It seems to be the fashion to unveil gig line ups in stages these days, and Atelier have teased out their line up pretty effectively, releasing the news of headliner 50 Cent a full week before the rest. And they've now announced that Welsh Grammy-award winner Duffy - her of the Motown-esque voice - is joining the G-Unit star on the bill at Meydan on Friday October 19. They'll be joined by plaster-wearing hip hop star Nelly, the sultry Ciara, Eva Simons and ex Garage star Craig David. 2 more acts are still to be revealed, head to theatelierworld. com for updates.
Witness the fitness
Infusion's weekly workout is generally supplied by a long stint on the dancefloor, but there's now a more constructive use to your fitness time — Trilogy have launched their own Tuesday night Zumba class. The latest fitness craze, Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements, and incorporates choreography from hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Head to the Studio Fitness in Trilogy on Tuesday September 4 from 7-9pm, tickets Dhs60 on the door.
Rumours After our tip-off recently, Mark Ronson has been confirmed to play at Trilogy's birthday party on September 27. Ex Radio 1 DJ Dave Pearce could be playing in Dubai soon, which is good news for the over 50s clubbing crowd. UK rave and happy hardcore pioneers Scooter are said to be making their way back to Dubai towards the end of the year.
We're looking forward to trying out the new Jumeirah Sceirah at Wild Wadi, which comes with its own trapdoor and 80km/h speeds (though we suspect it's not for the faint-hearted, or hungover). Word on the grapevine is that jackin' house specialist DJ Sneak could be winding his way back to Dubai soon. Happy days.
Creamfields was cancelled on its third and final day due to torrential rain — good news for comedowns across the UK, bad news for ravers who'd made the trip from Dubai! Dhs200 to see Lil Jon in action, and Dhs350 for Gotye? Do they come with an at-gig massage for those prices? Another mall, this time at the ultra congested JBR — 'cos that's what the city needs, another mall on the busiest road in town.

Infusion's Musical manifesto With chart music getting ever more dilute, and with the majority of music becoming ever more streamlined and commercial (and quite frankly, making us want to do a Van Gogh), we thought it was high time to make a statement about what music should be (rather than moan about what the current crop of landfill pop isn’t). With that in mind, we spoke to some of the most important people in Dubai’s music scene,
as well as to our readers, to get a quick sentence on what music should be, how it should be created, how it should make you feel, how it should be listened to, what makes it so special effectively.
Music Should be...
Safe Smokingroove (N’Dulge): Bought. Speaking as an artist and Record label owner, our main frustrations come from finding your own material being shared on download sites, making the job of surviving in the industry harder, year on year. This hits everyone on all levels as people upload things like
‘The Beatport Top-100’ to download sites, making music not only worth next to nothing, but also making it almost unviable to keep putting good material out there. Alec Harden (audiOasis): Music should be a constant evolution. If it’s not first, best or different, go back to the drawing board! Tim Hassall: An experience. It should transport you to the world of the artist, a place full of darkness and light. Rich Showell (audio tonic): What feelings sound like. Matthew Armstrong: A billboard that advertises your emotions, experiences and thoughts in an audio format the public finds that they can relate to, crossing language barriers in a way that convention communication can’t. Not simply a bastard love child of Justin Beiber and Louis Walsh. Samer Hamadeh (Republique): The original soundtrack to your life, otherwise it’s all just a bunch of meaningless, incomplete scenes. Steven Davis: Played loudly!
Schooly (Radio 2): Kept away from Niki Minaj, Drake, Lil Wayne and David Guetta! Clarita De Quiroz: Not played 15 times an hour on the radio stations until your ears bleed... Lisa Sant: Something that brings about a strong emotion. Much like a good director of a movie that will make you laugh, cry, or leave you with a profound thought, a good producer should get you up on your toes, down on your knees, give you goosebumps or have your jaw dropping ‘cause you just don’t know how to react to the beautiful sounds that are blending in your brain.
Music isn’t about words, it’s about expressing what words can’t properly convey so that anyone can understand it. Gareth Davies: Made with a filthy dance beat by barely talented ‘R&B’ artists. Then the world would truly be a better place! Oh wait... Conan Manchester (Loca): Emotive. Whether it’s
good or bad, it needs to create emotion. Otherwise what’s the point? When I produce I always ask myself this question: does it make me feel something? Too much music nowadays has had the soul squeezed out of it. It doesn’t live and breathe, there’s no room for it to organically grow. It’s compressed in the studio,
compressed when it’s sent to the Mastering stage and then compressed when it’s played on the radio or through a system. It’s no wonder it doesn’t make you feel anything. Patrik Carrera (Armani): An enjoyable experience and everyones right to make and listen to what they like should be respected and appreciated. Music should not be taken so seriously.
Vas (audio tonic): Should never be made to for a commercial purpose. That way the artist does not have to conform to stereotypes or rules, and can be creative and passionate. Music is emotions that are captured in an audio format.
Megadon Betamax (DUST): A true reflection of an artist, one that combines originality with influence, emotion with intelligence... Never cynical in its creation, never aimed at the lowest common denominator, always honest, always taking chances and perfect in its imperfection. Not to mention it should be cherished, supported, shared and above all, valued.
Marko Smokingroove (NAsimi): Whatever you need it to be. Music is for any occasion and should be an emotional experience, be it fun, sad, slow, fast. If you like it, enjoy it, if you don’t, don’t listen to it... Either way, quit the moaning, there is more than enough choice!
Somalie (audiOasis): Made for ourselves before trying to impress someone else.
Emily Kidman-Lee (EMI): Music should be whatever makes you happy and dance regardless of how it’s made or where it’s played. If you like heavy metal to classical, what does it matter how it’s made or by who? The world would be a very boring place if we didn’t have a bit of imagination.
DJ Lobito (Deep Crates): Real, raw, uncut, pure and not the sonic
equivalent of fast food we’re forcefed on the radio which is overly processed, artificial, exploitative, bad for your health, giving you cancer and definitely making you dumber!
Simon Reid (MustHaveSoul): Music should be from the heart.
Before rave came back into dancefloor fashion, one man — London’s Kissy Sell Out — was doing his best to create kick-start the sound with his partystarting ways. Now a major player, and with his own label San City High flying, erm, high, he makes his Middle East debut at N’Dulge on Thursday September 6 Firstly, welcome to the Middle East — are you surprised to be playing over here? It always amazes me how far music can travel and touch people. I’ve never been to the Middle East before so I am very excited! And how does the Kissy Sell Out sound travel, do your sets translate across the world? My DJ sets are very performance based, so the core
element doesn’t change but I like to keep up on tracks and sounds which are making waves more locally. I like sharing the experience with the audience when I’m spinning. So by making a little more effort to please the crowd, it is a gesture which shows how grateful I am to be there with them. You’re one of the most energetic DJs we’ve seen, do you have to train like an Olympian to stay in shape? Haha, thanks! Most night clubs gigs put me through a pretty intensive work out each night anyway, but I do train every day
to keep my body in check. The only tough thing is making sure I eat the right food which can be hard when you’re on the road. You’re a very innovative DJ/ Producer/Remixer — do you think that dance music lacks ambition sometimes? I don’t really think it lacks ambition, so much as inspiration. The more alternative scenes are based on innovation which I find very exciting and inspiring, but there are a lot of dull house DJs who want to be superstars DJs with no desire to make something musically ground-breaking. Having said that, not everyone wants the same things in life and the fact that dance music covers such a broad spectrum of tastes makes it the most versatile genre in modern music. Which other DJs do you look up to and respect — was there anyone who first sparked your interesting in DJing? I’ve always loved the way DJ EZ has such a physical presence on the decks – even if you are just listening to his mix CDs and can’t see him doing it! DJ Hype was the guy who made me want to be a DJ in the first place, and Andy C’s trademark “double-drop” bassline trick is something I frequently do in my own sets. You’ve also released a couple of excellent albums — are there plans to continue that?
I used to have a band and I learnt a lot touring with them as it is an entirely different experience compared to touring as a DJing. I think it’s where the strong showmanship vibe of my DJ style originates. I’m working on a new compilation style album now called San City High Allstars which is new ground for me as it flexes my remixing muscles as well as my original production and writing skills. Your Wikipedia entry says you produce ‘post-modern dance music’ — an impressive accolade, do you know what it means? I think it sounds a little more epic than its true meaning! Postmodern simply means taking the conventions of an old or established style and using it in a new context – and when I take speed garage beats or jungle sub bass lines and put them in my electro tunes, I guess that’s exactly what I’m doing! You’re a prodigious remixer and editor - how many tracks do you think you’ve got in your armoury? Good question, I’ll just check my iTunes… 1209!?! I’m surprised my fingers haven’t fallen off after that much remixing and re-editing!! Our Own feat. Kissy Sell Out, N’Dulge, Thursday September 6, 10pm-3am, Dhs100.
Marauder Midnight
In a time of landfill electro/RnB crossovers, and what limited talent there is being spread over mindless collaborations, the news that A Tribe Called Quest's DJ, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, is playing in Dubai comes as a blessing. So we got Conan Manchester, a huge ATCQ fan to ask the questions ahead of their September 13 Deep Crates gig Obviously you’re serious crate digger. How do you think the advent of the internet has affected crate digging as a whole? It's made it a lot easier to obtain songs that normally would have
been a challenge to find in addition to it being more costly of an investment. However those diggers that have an appreciation for the effort of discovering songs and that are not into file sharing the advent of the internet have become a positive resource as well. We are able to search for those record shops that are nestled in some small spot in the world more easily as well as leave tips for those that are on the same mission. What would be your ultimate hip hop supergroup? Good question. I don’t have an answer, there are so many requirements in my mind that I’m not sure it is achievable. I have high hopes for groups and soloists that are super like Outkast, Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul, Pusha T etc.
Do you program your drums on an SP1200/MPC type set up or do you do it all on a computer? I play drums live, I program them on the computer and I program them on NI’s Maschine. I’m not married to one form of making music, I like to switch it up to break the monotony in creating. How do you feel about most DJs using CDJs or computers to DJ on now? I feel that technology has always found a way to limit mankind while advancing us at the same time. There are those that will take shortcuts and there are those that will use the tools to further pioneer the art of DJing. For those that take shortcuts they do nothing but suck the life out of things and not add anything to it. For those that put heart and soul into it, they bring life and add value. I side with those that use the technology to add value to the art form. One can live life with a closed mind or one can be more open in thinking. I strive to be open in my thinking and approach to technology. Do you think there is a difference between rap and hip hop? Yes, there is a difference to me. Hip Hop is a way of life
while rap is just one part of the full expression known as hip hop. Hip Hop is a culture that rap alone can not encompass. There are different styles of rap which shows the different facets of hip hop. There are some styles of rap that uplift the hip-hop culture and there are some styles that don’t add value. What is your DJ set up now? Traktor, Serato, two turntables, a mixer & sometimes my NI maschine. Your production has been a massive influence on me and many other producers. Who did you look to as a producer when you first started making tracks? Thank you for the love. Growing up I looked up to James Brown, Quincy Jones, Gamble & Huff, Jam & Lewis, Leon Sylvers, The Bomb Squad, and Marley Marl to name a few. Deep Crates feat. A Tribe Called Quest DJ set, Thursday September 13, Casa Latina, 10pm-3am, Dhs125

Music News... Ibiza the new St Tropez?
We’re not short of St. Tropez aping clubs and bars in Dubai, but Pete Tong has warned that Ibiza faces being turned into a celebrity haunt to rival its French neighbour. The super-rich Radio 1 star told the Sun that while Ibiza’s ‘underground scene’ is thriving, its ‘VIP end’ is encroaching even faster, and also revealed that this MUSIC BITES season has been disappointing. “It’s probably not as busy as everyone was A live gig = 10% expecting after the record breaking summer to agent, costs of 2011,” he said, “The economy has taken and expenses, 20% management its toll, especially in Spain.” commission then His assessment struck a chord with the 25% to a label who views of Cocoon promoter Johannes Goller, hardly even come who admitted that numbers at Sven Vath’s to gigs let alone Monday night Amnesia bash were noticeably help down though blamed the massive expansion of techno parties this year for cutting UK pop/ grime star numbers. Professor Green Chatting to Resident Advisor he grumbles about the financial implicasuggested ‘the cake is simply not big tions of his 360º enough’, predicted that more than a few of deal (later adding the new techno nights will fail, and finished that he also then with a pointed tirade against the hordes of has to pay tax). rich people. “Yesterday I walked up and down Playa d’en Bossa, I checked all these venues, and everywhere you go you see big beds, big bottles of champagne, magnums of Rose. This is not Ibiza . . . the clubbers were first; the VIPs came and joined.”
Feel My Bicep Not only is Feel My Bicep one of the best-named disco and house blogs around, it’s set to be one of the more influential record labels as the Feel My Bicep duo have started releasing their own material through it. Following their summer smash ‘$tripper’, the boys have launched their follow-up EP, the old skool house referencing ‘Visions of Love,’ which you can hear at their new residencies at We Love and the Warehouse Project. And in a nice little twist, one half of the duo, Matt, is an ex Dubai resident, having held down residencies at Alpha and Trilogy.
Dennis Ferrer Brands EDM ‘Fast Food’ House
US commercial house star Dennis Ferrer predicted that today’s crop of EDM superstars could soon be struggling has-beens, in a biting critique in which he compared their currently hugely popular genre to notoriously sickly cheese spread ‘Cheez Whiz’. ‘Commercial EDM’ the people, corporate structure, labels, R&B artists, and clubs are all in collusion as a McDonald’s, and they all want a piece of the franchise action,” he told the Miami New Times, “They see an easy customer who just wants it fast, cheap and easy.” In more dance music-taking-overAmerica news Snoop Dogg unveiled his latest ‘techno’ DJ mix (under his DJ alterego DJ Snoopadelic) while shock-Gothrocker Marilyn Manson enthused about how he had to remove myself from my lifestyle and start fresh’ to come up with new Skrillez-lite single ‘Slo-mo-tion’.
MUSIC BITES The real scandal would be if you went all the way to Las Vegas and you didn’t misbehave in some trivial way
Notoriously delinquent former Bullingdon Club hooligan turned London Mayor Boris Johnson defends Prince Harry for being caught on camera cavorting with a naked woman in a $5,000 a night Vegas suite.

Where does Four Tet fit into today’s musical landscape or more accurately, how can this journalist pigeon hole Kieran Hebden’s sound? Normally it’s a struggle, as this one-man band creates a heady brew of free-form jazz and louche beats, employing a dancefloor dynamic that shuffles from bass to breaks to house at will. Carbon copy electro/RnB crap, this ain’t. But his latest release is a collection of 8 tracks he released on vinyl only this year, and it makes it easier to describe as each of these works of art (not something you can always say about music these days) are purpose built for dancefloors. Opener ‘Locked’ would work as Joy Orbison’s post-dubstep opener on The Boiler Room, all shuffling bass and intricate beats, while ‘Lion’ is a brooding tech house number that you could imagine Steve Lawler dropping during a darker-than-normal moment. The pick though is ‘Pyramid’ which is as funky a slice of ascending house as we’ve heard since Todd Terje’s latest release. Now we just need a dancefloor in Dubai that will be brave enough to test-run these on…
Plan B - ill Manors
It’s been quite the journey for Ben Drew. Hitting the scene as a wide-eyed, fast-talking hip hop star in 2006, he then transformed himself into, musically speaking at any rate, the male Amy Winehouse thanks to his soulfuric second album The Defamation of Strickland Banks. Alongside that, he’s had a growing film career, having moonlighted in Adulthood, the brooding Michael Caine film Harry Brown and 4.3.2.1. Finally, his two careers have merged in the form of ill Manors, both a hard-hitting feature film which has grossed nearly Dhs6 million and the accompanying soundtrack. Stylistically, Plan B dispenses with the fun(k), instead mining the film’s dark content to create a tightly wound soundtrack full of off-key flourishes, menacing lyrics and precision beats. It’s not always easy listening - ‘The Runaway’ and ‘Lost My Way’ for example - but the ferocity is offset by compassionate, understanding and often laugh-out-loud lyrics like this: ‘We’re not in broken Britain, we’re just Broke in Britain.’ Brilliant. Plan B famously lived the hard-knock life he portrays in the film, so the shock-tactic lyrics hit even harder, especially when they’re played off against staccato strings and soul samples. This, then, is angry music from the heart, which makes it a hundred times more worthy than the rest of the landfill pop that’s clogging up the airwaves. Andy Buchan
Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Darling Farah Body
Few Dubai artists can legitimately claim to have made an impression on the worldwide music scene (not without trying, it must be said), but one unlikely winner could be Kamau Baaqi, AKA Darling Farah. Once a resident of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, the 20 year old fled the country to pursue his music dreams - and they’ve come partially true as his debut album has just been released which melds smokey, 4am techno with warbling bass, creating a modern hybrid that sounds like Jeff Mills going back-to-back with Burial. Yeasayer Fragrant World
New York four-piece Yeasayer have more creativity than perhaps even they know what to do with. Over their previous 2 albums, they’ve created celestial pop, mid tempo electro, dubstepaping folk and all with a gorgeous, harmonic touch. And they’re just as scatter-gun on their third album - ‘Blue Paper’ is Hot Chip on good form, Devil and the Deed is more baroqueish rock and roll, while closer ‘Glass of the Microscope’ is introspective noodling of the highest order (that’s a compliment, by the way). Challenging, but worth persevering with.

Mix Master Time was when headphones meant huge, moon-sized objects you wore at home, or the desultory white iPod headphones that came with every Apple product. One did the trick, but meant you had to have elephantine neck muscles, while the other didn’t do your music (or any music) any justice. Fast forward, and headphones are big business, and for millions of people, a status symbol.
Beats By Dr Dre stole the march with their bass-tastic range which have been endorsed by celebrities across the world, while if you walk into any Virgin store, you’ll see dozens of competing new headphone producers alongside the industry stalwarts like Sennheiser and Bose. Skullcandy are already huge in the iPod game, and have created a large range of stylized headphones since their birth in 2003, but they’ve now made the move into DJ territory and roped in Beastie Boys’ resident, Mix Master Mike to advise on the design. And he’s created some novel and innovative features you can mute the headphones entirely allowing you to hear the room without taking off your cans, while you can also send all the audio to the left or right channel, making it easier to get a clearer mix. It also comes with a long coiled chord which plugs into either side, and the headphones collapse nicely into a small, easy-to-pack pile. But, while the headphones are lightweight enough to use for long sets (and indeed during everyday life), they’re plastic casing is one of the big drawbacks. Not only does it feel cheap compared to its more sturdy competitors, every time the plastic is knocked it translates into clearly audible knock in your ear. On the plus
side, the on-ear padding is very comfortable, and they provide a very snug fit. Sound-wise, the headphones give an aggressive sound, with enough bass and hi end sounds to make mixing a breeze (in theory, anyway!), while they also come with a mobile-ready cable so you can use them day-to-day. Ultimately though, in a crowded headphone market, a lot comes down to price and the Mix Masters are Dhs1,299, making them one of the most expensive on the market. DAMAGE They won the recent Strongbow Battle of the Bands competition and claim their sound ‘is a non-stop party’ — here’s what else Damage had to say for themselves…
How would you describe your sound? Damage has a sound that is very unique, we offer music that you can’t find in many bands. All the band members are talented singers - Hassi can do Shaggy and Bob Marley, Dhanuska is known to cover Rod Stewart, Barry White and Deep Purple, Ash does Robbie Williams and Prince, Dinu gets requests for Shakira and Adele and lead singer Sean is very versatile. So it’s a mixed bag of nuts, and the sound of Damage is a non-stop party with loads of surprises. What’s the best thing about being a cover band? We get to play music and enjoy it, without the hassle of being too much in the spotlight and your life being a media circus. The songs have also already been made hits by the hardworking artists. And the worst? The worst thing is when some people think you should know all the songs in the world and play a song on the spot. The weirdest thing a fan has said or given to us... Can’t be mentioned in public. We have had some female fans give us their clothing or throw it at us which is weird and not very pleasant (Ed - really? That’s living the dream, surely!) Talent competitions are... Help you reach a higher level of fame and respect, but they also provide us with a good experience and allow us the opportunity to get to know other musicians. If we could change one thing about Dubai’s music scene, we would... We would like to see more live music being played in some of the top clubs. Our favourite Dubai band is... Located in the Indian Ocean, The Maldives is a nation of islands consisting of over 1,200 sandy dots, stretched over an archipelago that measures more than 800km from north to south. And thanks to its horizontal lifestyle, it’s known as one of the most romantic holiday destinations in the world. We took a 5 hour flight for Dubai to Male and a sea plane from the main airport in Male
to our hotel which was located in the northern Atoll. As you fly over the ocean you can see dozens of tiny emerald coloured islands strewn across a perfectly beautiful flat sea. Some of the islands have nothing more than just sand and a gloss of crystal clear water lapping over them. We stayed in a beach villa for 6 days at the Adaaran Select Meedhupparu, half board. If you are looking for
relaxing and romantic escape for a long weekend, then the Maldives is definitely the place to go. There are so many great things to do as couples including the amazing Desert Island Picnic where you can book an island and make you feel like Richard Branson for a day. The hotel will prepare food and drinks for you, before the speed boat jets you over to your private paradise for a day of eating, sunbathing and watching the sun set, before it whisks you back at dusk. When you’re not soaking up the sun, make sure to get your flippers on as the snorkelling is out of this world. We were told that the highest point on the islands is probably only about 6 feet above the sea level which means that maintaining the coral reef is a significant factor in keeping these islands safe. We saw several schools
and some stunning reefs. Check out one of the bigger islands while you’re there, and take a peak into their life. One island we visited had only 260 full-time residents, with some born and raised on the same tiny patch of sand. Life looked very slow paced and simple on these tiny specks of paradise (a nice antidote to Dubai!). The people are happy and very welcoming and you can see that the kids seemed to have grown a custom to the tourists as they pose willingly for pictures. Then again, if you lived in the Maldives, you’d happily show off in pictures as well. Emirates.com fly direct, or indirect via qatarairways.com adaaran.com/selectmeedhupparu/ michelbergerhotel.com

WEIRD BITES All we can imagine is that the catfish somehow sneaked into the house in the time between us opening the door and then leaving for work Something fishy in China, as one couple caught a huge Catfish red gilled, after it had snuck into their apartment and raided the joint. We’ve heard of starting again in life, but one Florida businessman is literally selling his life on eBay for Dhs10 million. The top bidder will be able to take advantage of his chain of computer game stores, his two waterfront homes, three supercars and even his pet dog. The offer has already racked up nearly 75,000 hits and Mr Butcher, 29, from Tampa Bay, said: “I am selling my American Dream on eBay. You will be taught the ins and outs of the business.” Sadly for desperate single men, the deal doesn’t come with Mr Butcher’s wife included, as he plans to use the proceeds to go traveling with her before returning to America and starting life again.
Sleeping beauty An art installation in Kiev has just opened which features five real-life sleeping beauties who have to marry a man who kisses them if they open their eyes. Mr Polataiko, the artist behind the stunt, explained: “Everybody, any viewer, will have to sign the contract, which says if... I kiss the beauty and she opens her eyes while being kissed, I marry her.” Not sure about you, but we’d have our eyes squeezed tight for the full 3 days at the thought of kissing so many random — and no doubt — weird men.

Sighting of NASA team in Ras Al Khaimah leads to claims Mars photos were faked RAS AL KHAIMAH: NASA has come under intense scrutiny after the sighting of a team from the space agency in a Ras Al Khaimah car park have led many to believe the recent photos taken on the surface of Mars were actually faked in the UAE. Last week, the international astronomical community was wowed with what were described at the first high-resolution images from NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory robotic space mission. But one eyewitness has come forward with the claim that he saw a group of NASA photographers in an area of land behind a Ras Al Khaimah supermarket, and is adamant the shots were taken there. “I can’t believe people have been duped into thinking the dusty, desolate and uninhabited landscape in the photos is from the red planet, when it’s actually the car park at the back of my work,” said Hadi Massive, a lorry driver who says he watched the photoshoot take place while having a lunch break. “And the large shapes at the back of photos aren’t hills, but a big mound of sand that has been sat there for about three years.” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Some say he’s the first DJ to have rocked ras al khaimah, other that he knows david guetta’s 3 chords off by heart. Regardless, here’s habibi... DJ names are pretty important — just look at Osama Spin Laden’s career for proof. So how did you choose your DJ name and what makes a good name? Phil McCracken, Dubai I was lucky enough to be born DJ Habibi 2000, my parents were products of the acid house revolution, so you could say my glittering career has been mapped out for me. But there are some general rules for choosing a DJ name… Don’t use your own name (show a little bit of imagination), but do try out the Middle East DJ name aggregator — take a random item on a Lebanese menu,
add in the name of your first pet, and hey presto you have Misty Kibbe. If you do go for a weird name, make sure you Google it first so it’s not actually the name of a Chinese tampon, or the Turkish for ‘poop face.’ Make sure the name isn’t already taken — yes, America’s DJ Shadow, I’m looking at you ripping off your Dubai counterpart— and make sure it’s spelt correctly (duh @ Deadmau5). And make sure that whatever name you choose, it fits in with your branding and merchandise further down the line, like my DJ Habibi 2000 headphones, my DJ Habibi 2000 sparklers and my DJ Habibi 2000 8 ply toilet roll.

ANGRY MONKEY The Monkey couldn’t help but chuckle (partially down to the extra strength banana skin I’d just smoked, but also thanks to the following)… DJ’s egos are notoriously inflated beasts, making the Hindenburg seem small-scale in comparison. But unlike the Hindenburg, it’s somewhat harder to pierce their skin and bring them down. Which perhaps explains why so many DJs outlandishly — and very loudly — proclaim to be the UAE’s NUMBER 1 DJ. Firstly, deciding such a thing is virtually impossible due to wildly differing styles, genres of music, crowds played to etc. And secondly it makes you sound like douche bags. But that hasn’t stopped one very happy DJ, one banned DJ and one horse-rustling DJ and many, many others claiming the title over the last few years (can you guess who the Monkey is chatting about?). Anyway, it’s all been deemed irrelevant by the arrival of DJ Habibi 2000 on the scene, a mix-master the likes of which have never been seen (quite literally) before. Hail to the King! Monkey Out...
