There’s a common complaint that Dubai isn’t underground enough, that we’re dominated by pop music and past-it bands. And while commercial music might rule the airwaves, there is plenty of choice in the city. Megadeth and Razorlight just played at the Gulf Bike Week, tearaway dubstep duo Chase & Status are making their Middle East debut at Trilogy, cool yet commercial Welsh rock band Stereophonics are joined by 90s dance pioneers Leftfield at the next Sandance, while Hot Creations’ Lee Foss has just returned for the second time in a month. We have homegrown talents like Sain and DD Fox making breaks for the big time, and after the summer heat, we have a vibrant desert party scene once more (if you don’t know, you need to know). So don’t despair, people, the future is bright! Andy

What we did
Gulf Bike Week @ Festival City
Fresh from their dXb Music Festival, Live Nation proved that they’re a dab hand at rock as well as electronic music, pulling together Megadeth, Razorlight and Daughtry across the 2 day Gulf Bike Week Festival. And all three headliners excelled, notably Megadeth on the Thursday night, ably supported by local progressive metal band Absolace. Friday was a slightly more chilled out affair, but only slightly, as UK four piece Razorlight showed why a big-time comeback could well be on the cards, while opening act Juliana Down proved that they’ve stepped up to the big time with a faultless, ultraprofessional set.
Looking Back Sandance @ Atlantis
If you’re given lemons, make lemonade goes the saying. And when Example had to cancel Sandance due to a leg injury, the organisers weren’t slow to get on the lemonade train, pulling in Dizzee Rascal as replacement. And the ‘Fix Up’ star was the highlight of the festival, playing with the crowd throughout and finally dropping ‘Bonkers’ as his last track. His energy more than made up for The Fray’s lackluster rock - not even the lead singer climbing the scaffolding could lift their set. Thankfully Krafty Kuts was on hand, dropping a genre-hopping set full of skillful scratching and enough party tunes to get the 10,000 crowd jumping. Shout outs must go to house legend Frankie Knuckles who dropped a sunset masterclass, while DJ Fresh impressed with his bass-heavy set towards the end.
G-Shock Shock The World @ Desert Fish Studios
The Infusion office has a little bit of a watch fetish (we’re not bragging, but we have over 50 between the team), so when we heard about the G-Shock event, we were first to place our names on the guestlist. And we weren’t disappointed as the original G-Shock creator, Kikuo Ibe, was joined by Kris Fade, Dany Neville and hip hop acts Sain and The Narcicyst for a night of art, live music, graffiti and breakdancing. And plenty of watch perving.
Looking Back Avicii @ Atlantis
In today’s fast-living environment, just one track can make a DJ’s career. And for Swedish wonderkid Avicii, that one track was ‘Levels,’ a fantastically catchy electro/trance number that rocketed him to the forefront of the clubbing scene. And fittingly enough, ‘Levels’ saw the decibel count from the 6,000 capacity crowd rise sky-high on the Atlantis beach, before he dropped Zombie Nation’s ‘Kerncraft 400’ as his last tune. Special mention must go to the Absolut VIP area which had been decorated as an orchard for the night, lending the night a brilliantly surreal atmosphere (Ed - well, for those lucky enough to be VIP).
Rehab feat. Judge Jules @ XL Beach Club
Judge Jules: he of the lurid t-shirts, glasses and high energy electro and trance? Well, two out of the three remain the same, but when he dropped a High Contrast DnB tune during his set, it was pretty obvious that Jules has moved away from his previous tastes, embracing a whole range of styles, including at one point dubstep. Yup, Judge Jules in dubstep shocker. But he did live up to his other stereotype, that of being a lovely man, as he happily sauntered out into the crowd after his set for pictures and autographs.

Spot the difference One is the legendary DJ Roger Sanchez, the other is half of the Smokingroove brother-brother team, but can you tell them apart? Short and tweet @mrscruff1 Although I am a fairly technical DJ, it is vital to remember that the most important skill for a DJ is to play great records in the right order. Each record must complement the one before, and introduce the one that follows. Beatmatching is an obvious way of linking records, but there are other common factors, such as lyrical themes & complimentary keys that a DJ can use to aid the transition. Each piece of music has a mood and an energy level, and orchestrated carefully, you can create an atmosphere where every record that comes in is precisely right for that moment.

Looking Forward
Local News Dakota via Dubai
While some might have considered the previous Sandance line up a little light, there can be little discussion about their up-coming lineup. Multi-million selling Welsh rock band Stereophonics will be the big draw, but they come backed by a sunset set by Newton Faulkner, while Benny Benassi and UK hip hop/urban star Labrinth are also on hand, with the organisers promising more acts to be announced. It all takes place on Friday November 9 at Atlantis.
Status symbols
The city's bass scene might be in hibernation at the moment with only Bassworx and Trilogy's Kiss My Bass supplying the goodies, but good news is on the horizon as Trilogy have confirmed they're bringing hot-stepping UK duo Chase & Status to Dubai on Thursday November 1. The Halloween themed night will also feature MC Ollywood on warm up, while longterm collaborator MC Rage will be playing alongside the 'Blind Faith' stars.
Groove on the Grass
Due to licensing laws, clubbing in Dubai is limited to, obviously enough, clubs. But the enterprising guys at Groove on the Grass have opted for a very different location for their tech-house extravaganza on Thursday November 8th — the Emirates Golf Course, and more specifically the Royal Majilis in the middle of the course. The 6 hour party features Mobilee's Anja Schneider on headline duty, with local support from tech heavyweights Raxon and Warped's Adam. Tickets are Dhs120 including one welcome drink.

Looking Forward Black Coffee
Two bits of big news. Firstly, Infusion's online presence is about to be tripled as we're currently beavering away refining our website infusion.ae to include live gig streaming, music downloads, up-tothe-minute news and gig guides and in-depth interviews with the biggest local and international stars. And to coincide with our re-launch, we're throwing a party with South Africa's Black Coffee headlining at 360 on Thursday November 22. One of the big stars of the soulful house scene, he's also one of the best technical DJs around, and is guaranteed to have the 360 floor shaking from start to finish.
Caribbean vibes We might be 7780 miles from the Caribbean and we might not share quite the same laidback life ethos, but that hasn't stopped there being several Caribbean parties over the years, with the latest pulling together an impressive roster of acts for their November 1 event. Co-headling at the event at Burj Park, Downtown, are Jason Derulo, Shaun Kingston and Bow Wow (who's not so little any more). The pop acts take to the stage on day one of the festival, while day focusses on the food and entertainment that make the Caribbean culture so rich. Early bird tickets are Dhs225 for both days, and Dhs275 on the door.
Looking Forward Rumours
Gilles Peterson has confirmed he's playing at Nasimi Beach on Friday November 23. Jamie Jones and Luciano could be heading to a beach club on the outskirts of town soon. Maceo Plex has confirmed he's playing at Trilogy on Thursday December 6. Rihanna is said to be heading to town in November. Faithless and Gorillaz are rumoured to be heading to Dubai for NYE.
Props to Channel 4 who have added upcoming UK bass duo Disclosure to their playlist. Forward thinking radio! We're going to spend a fortune on a Halloween costume and then win it back across the dozens of clubs dishing out thousands of dirhams for the best/scariest dressed. We're going as Mitt Zombie, topical and easy money. 50 Cent might have stolen the show at Atelier's recent festival, but he also stole the Twitter abuse award in a series of Tweets about his supposed after party location, culminating in this beauty: "Jankie promoter Cash Club is a no go Dubai 50cent."
Bad losers (and winners). Bah humbug to you too. Girls in heels at beach parties. You wouldn't wear hiking boots to ballet, so why wear 6 inch heels that sink into the sand at the city's beach clubs? Festival organisation. Line ups are important, but getting the simple things right like food, drink, entry times, security are paramount. Please take note event organisers!
Confirmed as the first headliner at the Atelier/Festival III on NYE, we took a trip down memory lane with Snoop Dogg, charting the highs, the highs, and the lows of one of hip hop's biggest, most endearing stars
1971
1980
1990
1971
Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr was born in Los Angeles.
1980
Calvin’s parents nickname him Snoopy due to his appearance, with Snoop soon starting to sing in the Baptist Church and rapping by the time he was in the 6th grade.
1983
A 12 year old, Snoop claims to have had his first sexual

experience. A three-some no less! At the same time, he also becomes the star quarterback for the Long Beach Rough Riders.
1987
Now over 6ft tall, Snoop has progressed from selling candy on the streets to make a living, to something a little harder: crack. He joins the 20 Crips gang, gets expelled from school and then arrested, spending several weeks in juvenile detention.
1988
Snoop starts dating his future and current wife Shante, and while trying to impress her, organises a party that turns out to be his debut rap performance.
1990
Snoop Doggy Dogg, along with his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil 1/2 Dead, plus friend Warren G (whose half brother is Dr Dre), start recording home tapes under the name 213. And it was on one of these tapes that Dr Dre heard Snoop’s freestyle rap over En Vogue’s ‘Hold On,’ and asked him to audition.
1993
Snoop releases his first album, Doggystyle, on Death Row Records, following extensive contributions to Dr Dre’s The Chronic, released the previous year. Critics praised his lyrical realism and his distinctive, laid-back Southern flow.
1993
Shortly after, Snoop and his bodyguard are embroiled in a shoot out with a rival gang member, who is shot by Snoop’s bodyguard. After a week of hiding, the pair are charged with manslaughter and Snoop is released on $1 million bail, with Snoop’s record label using the murder charge as a marketing tool, helping to shift 6 million copies of his debut album.
1994
While shooting for his video ‘Gin and Juice,’ members of the Bloods gang crash the studio, prompting Snoop to pack up his wife, mother and brothers and leave the hood.
1996
Snoop releases his third album in 2 years, Doggfather, hitting the No.1 spot in its first week, selling nearly half a million copies in the process. He’s also acquitted of his murder charge, but owes Death Row’s Suge Knight a fortune in legal costs. There’s also increasing competition for Snoop, as Tupac signs to his label and promptly sells 10million copies of All Eyez on Me, knocking Snoop from the top dog spot.
1998
It’s a pivotal year as Snoop leaves Death Row and changes his name — not for the first time, as you’ll find out later — to Snoop Dogg.
1999
Snoop returns to hip hop form, as he works on the follow up to Dre’s The Chronic: Tha Next Episode is a huge smash, as is lead single ‘Still D.R.E.’
2000
His lyrics might be oft quoted, but in 2000 Snoop unleashes his crowning lyrical glory, using ‘Fo shizzle’ on ‘What’s
2000
Later that year Snoop makes his porn director debut (the man has many talents, apparently), releasing Doggystyle which mixed hip hop and porn, becoming the best selling porno of the year.
2001
With a directorial debut behind him, Snoop moves further into Hollywood and stars alongside Dre in The Wash, while he also has a small part in Denzel Washington’s crime drama Training Day.
2002
After years of smoking, Snoop — on the verge of turning 30 — decides to quit smoking and becomes his son’s football coach. The respite is, predictably, brief, and Snoop allegedly now has a full time member of staff who’s sole job is to roll him joints.
2004
My Name.’ The term would go on to become part of the modern lexicon, while it also led to Gizoogle, a website that would translate normal text into Snoop’s language.
‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’, a collaboration with Pharrell is released, tearing up charts and occupying club dancefloors for months. Snoop also gets into TV, hosting Doggy Fizzle Televizzle on MTV.
2006
While waiting to board a flight to South Africa from the UK, Snoop is denied entry to the
VIP lounge at Heathrow, and a mass brawl breaks out. Snoop is arrested — cue headliner writer’s dream of ‘Snoop headed for the pound’ — but he’s already busy on his next project, becoming a spokesman for a broad range of companies, endorsing everything from chewing gum to Burger King.
2007
Snoop is sentenced to 5 years probation on gun and drug charges, and is also barred from Australia, and is arrested by Swedish police for possessing pot. In better news, he’s part of the Live Earth concerts, and becomes the star of his own reality show Father Hood on E! Forbes magazine also estimate that Snoop rakes in nearly $17 million a year.
Boyle on a track, stating ‘If you set the studio session up, I’d do that.’ Around this time, one of Snoop’s long-time producers Shawty Red, is arrested on a murder charge.
2011
Snoop plays live on Yas Island, drawing in a huge crowd — one he shocks as he appears on stage wearing local national dress.
2012
As part of his upcoming new album Reincarnated, Snoop releases a new reggaetinged single under his new pseudonym Snoop Lion, while he also starts a DJ career under the name Snoopadelic, playing deep house. Strange but true.
2008
Never afraid of interesting collaborations, Snoop teams up with Bollywood hit-maker Pritam and British bhangra band RDB to score the title song, Singh is Kinng, while Snoop also enjoys a cameo part in the film.
2010
Continuing the, erm, interesting collaboration theme, Snoop tells Rap-Up that he’d happily work with disjointed UK singer Susan
2012/2013
Snoop is confirmed as Atelier/ Festival III's first headline act on New Year’s Eve headliner, bringing his two decades of rich musical history with him to bring in the new year. Snoop Dogg plays Atelier/ Festival III at Meydan Racecourse on NYE, tickets on sale Nov 1, theatelierworld.com

MOODMUSIC BERLIN

It's one of our favourite nights on the calendar (yeah, OK, we run it, but we can still be enthusiastic about it), combining the holy trinity of good music (soul, funk and Motown), good venue (Blends in the Marina) and dressing up (Afros baby!). It returns on Tuesday November 6, and we caught up with Mo Funk main man Schooly and asked him to dig deep in his record bag‌
SCHOOLY
1. Maceo & The Macs - Cross The Track This personifies what Mofunk is about, a true rare groove anthem and soul classic. 2. Julien Dyne feat Mara TK - Layer Mofunk’s not just about the classics, we break new tracks as well that fit the bill. This has been A Soulful Session ANTHEM over the last 2 years now and one of the funkiest new tracks, guaranteed to be a future classic. 3. James Brown - Get On The Good Foot Driving bass and horns and magical production make this a huge floor filler from previous events. 4. Black Machine - How Gee I used to hate this track when it first came out, but as time has gone on, it’s become a regular fixture at my funk/soul events. It’s one of those tracks that whether you’re into funk/soul, you know the great bridge. 5. Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper’s Delight ‘Nuf said. It’s an anthem and you can’t have funk without Hip Hop! Mofunk @ Blends, The Address, Dubai Marina. Tuesday November 6, 8pm-late, free entry.
House music is growing, spreading and mutating, sucking in influences from left, right and centre. And at the middle of that is the fast-rising UK house star Huxley, who creates energetic deep house, with a strong garage inflection. Ahead of his debut at audio tonic, we caught up with the 20:20 star to find out more…
And where does the name come from, is it an homage to Aldous Huxley? It is, yeah. I was reading Brave New World when I started sending out my first demos – it
new
Brave world
What’s your musical heritage? People like Tuff Jam, Kerri Chandler, Ray Hurley, MJ Cole, MCDE, Mike Dunn, Chez N Trent, J Dilla etc. I first got into house through listening to UK Garage when I was about 16 and then I started listening to old house. Minimal nights every week at The Key, The Cross, The End etc etc when I was about 18/19 were my clubbing cornerstones, as that sound was massive around then and from there I moved in to proper house music.
fit nicely with Ethyl, who I was working with at the time so it stuck. It’s a f******good book too. It seems to be a very fresh scene in the UK, mixing house, bass and techno, who do you look up to? It changes all the time in terms of new people, but the mainstays are people like Kerri Chandler and M.A.W. Lately, people like Eats Everything, Mosca, Julio Bashmore, Dusky and Aus Music never put a foot wrong. The British scene is always moving, but how adventurous can you be with your music around the world, does it translate? Every gig is different, so it really depends on the time but on the whole people tend to be pretty open minded. People might get a bit skittish when the term 2-step is used in a music description, how can you relax them? Valium? You’re quite in demand at the moment, have you had to say no to any big projects due to time constraints? My studio schedule is tight, so I have to say no to lots of stuff that I would definitely
say yes to if time was no worry. I’ve still managed to do a lot of the things I’ve really wanted to do this year, though. What was the first sign that you could make a full time living from DJing and music? I think I just took the plunge. There’s never any ‘right’ signs for this sort of thing, it’s always a big step but I can’t say I regret taking the jump as it’s the best decision of my life. What have you heard about Dubai and the party you’re playing? It’s a bit of an unknown for me so I’m really excited to see how it is. Sometimes not knowing anything before is good, because everything after that is a bit of a surprise. And what can people expect from your set? That’s a hard question, but it’s fair to say I’ll be putting a fair bit of time into making sure I’ve got some great music with me. audio tonic feat. Huxley, 360, Friday November 2. 4pm-3am, guestlist only via platinumlist.ae 4-8pm.
Born in the He’s one of the city’s biggest DJs, with a seemingly 24/7 DJ schedule. In between his radio, TV show and DJing commitments, we caught up with homegrown talent DJ Bliss You recently completed a mini London tour — what are the big differences between the UK and UAE crowds? Gigs in London are great, this summer I performed at DSTRKT, Chinawhite and Movida, but as much as I love their crowds it makes me realize how much I love the UAE’s too. The London scene is a little more up-to-date with brand new tracks, and the crowd are open to hearing new things but in the UAE the crowds have an incredible reaction to songs they love!
he taught me how to play the guitar. From there I just got curious about music, started doing my research, spending weekends at music stores, etc.
And where’s next on the international tour? Next would be Asia, I’ve never explored the DJ scene out there and only hear great things.
How has the club scene changed since you’ve been involved in it? And where do you see it evolving to from here? Dubai has always had an incredible nightlife but the growth in the number of clubs and the quality of clubs has shot up in recent years with big international players stepping in. It changes all the time and so
What was your first introduction to DJing and music? My brother introduced me to the world of music, he had a crazy collection of albums and
You’ve had very public run-ins with Dany Neville, what started the problem in the first place, and would you sit down to have a beer with him? Who? I don’t drink beer. And what advice would you have to someone looking to replicate your career? Work hard, play hard and B+
rapidly that its hard to keep track… Before you know it you hear of another club opening, another artist coming out and another club closing down. Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? I don’t like planning ahead as new opportunities pop up everyday. You’re a hip hop DJ, but quite versatile - is there anything you wouldn’t play in your sets? I love Hip Hop and Urban music, it’s what I grew up with but over the years have branched out into all types of music and have learnt to always try out new genres and artists. How do you balance the commercial/underground balance when you’re DJing? Music is music, if it's good music I’ll play it, if it’s not good then I wont. I don’t divide music between commercial or underground anymore. DJ Bliss plays at The 411@People by Crystal, every Saturday.

Music News... Glastonbury sells out
Hate it or hate it (we jest, of course), the DJ Mag Top 100 is always one of the industry’s main talking points, and this year’s list is just as divisive. At the very top, Guetta’s brief reign at No.1 has come to an end, with Dutch trance titan Armin Van Buuren back on top spot, with fellow Dutch compatriot Tiesto taking second and recent Dubai guest Avicii taking third. Guetta falls to 4th, followed by Deadmau5, Hardwell, Dash Berlin, Above and Beyond, Afrojack and Skrillex. Tougher house, electro and dubstep DJs have all done well in the poll, replacing the old guard of house DJs, which reflects the younger side of the clubbing population, especially in the rapidly emerging American EDM market. For a full list of the Top 100, head to djmag.com/top100.
MUSIC BITES Zoolander 2? Lie in some mud in your back garden for three hours because you’re blind drunk, then spend the next 20 years of your life telling everybody that you know that you had a spiritual experience Huffington Post writer Jim Smallman offers vital advice on how to ‘make your own Glastonbury.
It’s one of our favourite films of all-time, with as many quotable phrases as it does memorable moments. So we were pulling Blue Steel faces when we heard that Lady Gaga had been reportedly offered Dhs18 million to star in the next Zoolander film. Ben Stiller, who directed and starred in the original 2001 comedy, is said to be keen for Gaga to take a role in the sequel, in which Stiller will reprise his role as male model Derek Zoolander, while Owen Wilson will return as Hansel McDonald. An unnamed source told The Sun: “Gaga is top of their wish-list. She has the talent and attitude – and an amazing sense of humour.” The paper also reports that Kate Moss, Kate Upton, Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima are also being considered for the part.

Hell will tear them apart New Order’s Bernard Sumner has said that Peter Hook’s decision to tour Joy Division’s albums “opened the gateways of hell”. Hook’s band The Light have recently been touring Joy Division’s classic albums ‘Unknown Pleasures’ and ‘Closer’ in full and, in an interview with Billboard, Sumner said his old bandmate’s shows had prompted him to work with New Order again. When asked if he would have carried on with New Order if Hook hadn’t played his ‘Unknown Pleasures’ tour, Sumner responded: ‘Twenty million dollar question, that is. I don’t know. But we did think, why should we hold back if he’s doing that? He opened the gateways of hell.’ MUSIC BITES Sumner also gave his opinion on the You know he’s got bassist’s recent announcement that he will a guy who rolls his tour the first two New Order albums with joints all day? That’s The Light in January next year, stating: “I his only job think it sucks to be honest. We found out that he was touring ‘Unknown Pleasures’ Alex Boys Noise through the press. He didn’t tell us, which recalls hanging out we thought was pretty low. It just seems like with Snoop Dogg. a real commercial thing to do. “He seems to be doing it for the money,” he added. “To me, Joy Division and New Order were never about that. I thought it was disrespectful to the rest of us. But I must admit that once he started doing it, we did think, ‘What are we doing holding back with New Order?’ So, in a way — if you’ll excuse the pun — he showed us the light.”
Ahead of his new album, we caught up with one of India’s leading DJs and remixers, Suketu to talk global expansion, David Guetta and creating dance music magic from Bollywood… You’re no stranger to Dubai, what do you make of the city? Dubai has always been one of my favourite cities to perform in. I came to Dubai for my first performance in 2002. Since then Dubai has been very close to me for performing. I have also got the highest crowd turn out at my gigs in Dubai. I feel the people in Dubai really know how to party. The response they give to the music they hear is awesome, the best being their acceptance to listen to and dance to something they haven’t heard and you introduce something new to them. The clubs are great and I love the fact that all nationalities come together under one roof to party. Both India and America seem to have got dance music in a big way recently — how big is the dance music scene in India now? The dance music scene is
growing by the year. Since its infusion in around 2000, it’s gained great momentum. The rise of dance music in India has been mainly in the last 4 years. Every international DJ has come to India or wants to come to India to perform. The Swedish House Mafia concert happening in India in November 2012 sold out in 5 hours. Also India hosts one of the biggest Dance Music Festivals in the world called Sunburn every year in Goa and over 3 days, there are about 60,000 people who attend it. India is as much a part of the music scene today as any other country.
You recently finished an American tour, how was that? The USA tour 2012 was excellent. I can proudly say that every event was a sell out. It’s nice to know that Bollywood remixes and our music is not only popular with the Indians living
in USA, but the locals and other nationalities as well. It was nice to see that the crowd at most of the gigs was 80% Indians and 20% other nationalities. It feels good to know that we are a part of the global music industry. How do you describe the sort of music you make? Well, in simple terms I produce remixes. But remixes inspired and influenced a lot by current and international sounds and genres. If you listen to my new album called DJ Suketu and Friends present R D Burman Reinvented, you will notice the sounds and
genres of the remixes that to be international and 2012. Bollywood films often take a lot of inspiration from mainstream titles, how similar is Bollywood music, is there much innovation? There is a lot of innovation in Bollywood music. Every genre and form of music is inspired by another. The good thing is that the Bollywood music industry has opened to every one now. We have got excellent young music directors like Amit Trivedi, Sneha, Sachin Jigar etc. creating fantastic hits and making their music keeping in mind international trends and sounds. The music directors of today aren’t just composing and producing music to the Indian audiences only. They know that Bollywood music has reached greater heights and they produce music to meet those international expectations as well. Your Wikipedia page states you’e the ‘most succesful’ remixer in India — why do you think you’re so popular?
I am not sure who has created my Wikipedia page, but I am sure I he/she must be a person who must have liked my music a lot. My thanks going out to him/her for giving me such a fantastic title. When I produce a remix, I like to keep in mind the original emotion and feel of the song I am remixing and work around it. I love using new sounds etc. but not at the cost of compromising the original song. Maybe that’s why audiences like my remixes and appreciate them. You were trained by Cut Master Swift, a renowned DJ — how impressive are your deck skills? Well, it’s difficult for me to say how good I am. I guess that should be done by the people who have seen me on the decks. But to my credit, I have won the Disco Mixing Club Mumbai and India Championships in 2000.
You met David Guetta earlier in the year, what did you both talk about? David Guetta and me had a 15 minutes meeting when he visited India for his tour. He is a great person and very down to earth. We spoke about his experience in India and of course if he would like to collaborate later with Indian artists to produce a track. He showed keen interest and said he loved India and was over whelmed by the response he got from the crowds to his songs and music. Who do you think will be the first big global Indian DJ star? What makes you think that we DJs aren’t already big Indian DJ stars? DJs from India are invited to play all over the world and make people party. We are already there.
DJ Suketu and Friends present R D Burman Reinvented is out now.

Album Reviews... Tame Impala - Lonerism
Making new, fresh music from a mix of guitar, bass, drums and vocals is pretty tough. Bands like Radiohead have altered the template over time, but for most bands it’s a case of working within already defined limits. New Zealand’s Tame Impala are well aware of this, which is why they’ve updated the classic 60s and 70s psych rock sound with a bolshy, reverb-heavy beat underneath. Throughout their second album, you’ll hear hints of Deep Purple and Pink Floyd, but it’s the Beatles influence that shines through brightest, all multicolour textures, stop-start rhythms and sonic bursts of feedback, especially on lead foot-stomping single ‘Elephant.’ But this album isn’t about singles nor its retro-activism, it’s 52 minutes of blissed out rock, 12 tracks of propulsive, scuzzy guitar rock that redefine the psych sound for the modern day.
Madness - Oui Oui, Si Si, Ja Ja, Da Da
The Olympics were great for many, many reasons, but showcasing Britain’s unique musical heritage was one of the best. Bands like The Arctic Monkeys and Madness revelled in the madness of the opening ceremony, while others (notably cash-hungry George Michael floundered at the closing ceremony). But it was Madness, all big band enthusiasm led by Suggs and his boundless energy, that captured the loud and proud British spirit. And it’s all brilliantly showcased on this, their 11th album. Reggae, pop, ska all get equal billing, while the raft of new producers they’ve used (including Blur’s Stephen Street) have lifted the sound, making it both modern and, thanks to their honky-tonk funk, brilliantly retro. Not many bands enjoy a second wind as productive as Madness, but by the sounds on Oui Oui, it’s one they’re enjoying to the max. Andy Buchan
Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don’t Bend! Ascend!
After a 10 year hiatus, free-form Canadian collective Godspeed are back with another mind-melting album that somehow, somehow pulls together thrash metal, orchestral noise, political musings and postrock dynamics, creating a sonic masterpiece that rips and soars. The 4 tracks are spread over nearly an hour, so this isn’t easy listening — but when ‘We Drift Like Worried Fire’ flips into overdrive after 10 minutes, you’ll be paying very close attention indeed. Welcome back Godspeed, welcome back. Kid Koala - 12 Bit Blues
There’s blues, like the ‘sold my soul at the Mississippi delta blues,’ there’s Jack White’s modern take on blues and then there’s turntablist Kid Koala, who’s created a 12 track post-modern blues album, that’s made of cut-andpaste beats and pieces, a collage of samples that creates a toe-tapping, banjo bothering album. Imagine if you will a reverse copy of Moby’s Play, but add in more RJD2/ DJ Shadow beats and you’re pretty close.

DJ Booth: Rob Love
A soulful house DJ, Rob Love has recently been found playing at the Sunstroke parties in Dubai.
One thing you might not know about me is… I love wildlife and nature, getting out of the city and seeing the beauty that any country has to offer. It gives me the drive and imagination to create my tracks, I just wish I could take my studio along with me. My favourite ever record is… My all time big favourite is ‘Patrice Rushen - Haven’t You Heard’. Every time I hear this amazing track I want to stop to smile and dance. DJing is much like… Well DJing is not as easy as it looks, you need to go with how the crowd responds to certain tracks you play so you know when to drop the big dance floor shakers. A DJ will get so much respect playing a track everybody in the club will love, but having the element of surprise is a very pleasant experience. I’m really proud of… I love house music and I am proud to see it here in Dubai and part of such a big community. I listen to the radio a lot over the weekends especially ‘Greg Stainer’s Club Anthems” and Mr Mr from Audio Tonic. If I could change anything about anything it would be… I’ve always been a huge fan of Bob Marley, he had a beautiful view on how life should be and expressed so much through his music. So if I could change anything it would be to make sure he was still alive today. I can’t live without… One thing I cannot live without is music. If I woke up six feet underground in a coffin it wouldn’t be so bad if I had a large selection of tracks. So when I leave this world I would like to make sure somebody leaves my iPhone with me just in case I wake up. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Playing a four hour set at the winter music conference in Miami alongside some of the biggest household names in house music such as Kenny Dope, Fred Everything, Copyright and Reel People was mind-blowing. I’m not a politician but... I would like to see president Obama throw a huge D&B party in the white house, that would be pretty awesome. soundcloud.com/rob-love

Sain
Sain is the latest in a long line of hip hop talents emerging from the city
How would you describe your sound? Take my experiences from the US because I was born there. Take a little bit of East Africa because I’ve got that in my blood line too and mix it up with where I live and represent, which is the Middle East. The UAE gave me the ability to dream big and to be ambitious, so when you listen to me you hear a multi-cultural person and an international sound that is meant to be for the masses everywhere. Being a musician in Dubai is much like... The industry here is not really big compared to places like London or New York. It’s hard if you want to take it to the next level here. But being a musician here in the beginning phases is not bad at all. My first musical influence was... My brother, he’s ten years older then me and he’s been into music for a very long time. I watched him make music when I was younger and it played a part in me wanting to be an artist. The best way to get noticed in Dubai is... Dubai follows what it sees in the international scene and if a person somehow gets into that scene, it is the only way a person can be fully relevant and noticeable in Dubai. Dubai’s hip hop scene is... New, it’s growing and it needs to unite a bit more at the moment to be heard by outsiders. The best lyrics of all time are... Changes - Tupac. If we could change one thing about Dubai’s music scene... More support for artists. Especially things like the Creative Lab & TwoFour54. At the end of the day, it’s the listeners and the media that plays a huge part in shaping an artist, so when we have something good from here we as the whole need to support. The best local band is... I don’t really keep tabs on a lot of local bands here in the UAE, but out of the few that I know I’d have to go with DD Fox. She’s talented, her music is different, plus I’m thinking about working on something with her soon. soundcloud.com/officialsain

Weird News...
Cat power
News of fights breaking out in Downing Street are nothing new — after all with all those political egos jostling for space, the tension is always going to be high. But news reaches Infusion Towers that an almighty power struggle took place last week as Larry and Freya literally tore chunks out of each other, pulling hair and scratching furiously. But after a quick dose of catnip, the Prime Minister’s cat Larry and Freya, who belongs to Chancellor George Osborne, were finally separated. It is not known what caused fur to fly between the feline residents of Nos 10 and 11 Downing Street.
WEIRD BITES It was the biggest cannabis plant we had seen An extract from a tweet from the Bedford Police after an elderly couple carefully nurtured a shrub bought at a car boot sale into a huge cannabis plant. It has since been disposed off.
Who’s your daddy? When it was first reported by newspapers like The Telegraph, it seemed one of the most bizarre stories of recent times. A new site, Fame Daddy, was offering celebrity sperm for Dhs80,000 to fame obsessed women desperate for a child star. It promised 40 different donors, including from a former professional footballer, an actor, a genius, a rock star and an aristocrat. But the story has been revealed as an elaborate hoax as the 2Le Media company admitted they were creating a satirical TV program for channel 4. But sadly the unveiling came after the company’s ‘boss’ had appeared on ITV’s The Morning show. Gotcha!

Egyptian graffiti artist still waiting for call from world’s media CAIRO: “It’s totally ridiculous,” claims Eyad Latif, a 21-year-old street artist in the Egyptian capital who goes by the tag name of Sph-Inks. “Every other graffiti artist I know has been featured in some well-meaning article or news documentary claiming that they were the creative face of the revolution and helped topple Mubarak or something, whatever. But my phone hasn’t rung once. Surely I’m the voice of a generation as well.” Undeterred by the snub, Latif claims that he’s planning a new piece of urban artwork that he hopes will draw the attention of the world’s photojournalists. “It’s going to be the Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, but with Mohammed Morsi’s face on every character. I have no idea what it’s supposed to mean.” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Some say he’s the first DJ to have rocked ras al khaimah, other that he knows david guetta’s 3 chords off by heart. Regardless, here’s habibi...
How do you deal with what must be constant requests for interviews, the paparazi following you everywhere, people snooping in your bins?
Dick Van Dyke As you’re probably aware, I’m quite a self conscious person — shy almost — so I don’t like bragging about myself to my 1 million Facebook followers (all of whom I bought at an online auction like my good friend Sabrina), nor do I like boasting about my obscene wealth when I’m driving down The Walk in my limited edition Maserati.
So to talk about my troubled childhood and my effortless rise to the top of the DJ industry can be quite painful in interviews — but you can read all about me, my home and my cats in the latest issues of Hello!, Allan!, Time Out Ajman and Outlet Mall Magazine with exclusive pictures of me at my 75 roomed villa to get a better idea of my struggles as an artist.

One’s the brains behind one of our favourite nights Deep Crates, the other recently launched monthly Latin night Onda. But who’s cool and who’s a FOOL (said in BA Baracus style)? Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? I’m usually the one that gets other I’m a good boy and don’t get into people out of trouble. trouble... It’s not big and clever but…
I have been known to down 12 Long Island iced teas in one sitting...
When I was at school, the two tallest guys in class offered to throw me up in the air as high as possible — I was delighted. But then as I was about to land on my head, I realised it wasn’t a very good idea and ended up spending half a day in a semi-coma.
My best claim to fame is… Launching my own label — DESMO I invented dice. records — and its first project this year: ‘A L.A.S.’ Describe your best track in 5 words… ‘yyyyyyyyyeeeaah......... sick...... It. is. NOT. Gangnam. Style. psssssssss............hmmmmm....... sweeeeeeeeet!’ Have you ever been arrested? Not that I know of. I hope it stays No, I’m too smart for the coppers. that way. Your answer to everything is… I wish I had an answer to evTu madre. erything! I do have questions to everything though... What’s the best insult you could give each other? ¿sabes como se pronuncia uruguay en inglés? = you’re gay (Translation: Can I teach you how to scratch? The verdict: Lobito is the winner, and receives a set of scratching lessons from Adriano.

ANGRY MONKEY Your face is your fortune, so the cookie proverb goes. Well, my face looks like a baboon’s bum, so I’ll take that with a pinch of salt. But the Monkey couldn’t help but reel in shock and awe at some of the poses you monkeys pull as you’re getting papped. Yes, you might get snapped in a nightclub when you’ve had more than your fair share of drinks, but is that any reason to scrunch up your lips as if you’ve been to a particularly bad Lebanese cosmetic surgeon (actually, scrub that, I’ve just realized you’re genuinely Lebanese)? And why do you feel the need to throw random fingers at random angles at the cameraman as if you’re part of some blood-thirsty gang? Last time we checked the Jumeirah Jane crew weren’t part of any turf warfare. And anyone seen doing rabbit ears behind someone’s head from now on will be dealt with by the Monkey’s sh*t-firing cannon, you have been warned. Just smile politely, thanks for the photographer and get on with your business, your duck-face days are over.
Monkey Out...
