It’s either the biggest night on the calendar, or the biggest let down, but it seems that Dubai’s promoters are falling over themselves to make sure this year’s NYE falls in the former camp. Atelier were first to release their line up, living up to their tag line of being the biggest festival in the Middle East as Snoop Dogg is joined by Faithless, Gorillaz and Armand Van Helden, with more to be announced. Elsewhere on the grapevine, we’ve heard that Sandance has confirmed trance titan Paul Van Dyk for their line up, with more to be announced, while 360 with Crazy P and Inland Knights will no doubt be making the most of their double dancefloor and spectacular views of the fireworks and the coastline, leaving us spoilt for choice on the big night. What we did
Eminem @ Yas Island
Over the years, Flash have brought out a panoply of talent, but it’s fair to say that in Eminem, they had one of their biggest bookings. And the American MC didn’t let them down, ripping through a 90 minute set that included classics like ‘My Name Is’ and ‘Stan.’ Crowd-wise, the F1 race goers were a little unsure of what to make of it, something Eminem noticed as he commented ‘are you having even a bit of fun?’ half way through. But thanks to a very vocal contingent at the front, he got the reaction he wanted at the end as he was given a huge ovation at the end of his hip hop masterclass.
Looking Back Strictly Vinyl @ 360
There are several logistical reasons why vinyl has taken a back seat to digital in recent years: after hours of set up, enough crate digging to give us Popeye arms, and, literally, blood, sweat and tears, our all vinyl night at 360 was all set up. And thanks to the hundreds that came down, was packed from the start, as Just Lance, Charl Chaka and Wriggly Scott dropped everything from 60s funk to Basement Jaxx;s ‘Jump’n’Shout.’ And, despite the back-ache, we’re back doing it all over again on December 13.
Never Get Out The Boat @ Jebel Ali With endless sun, clear blue waters and a healthy crowd looking for electronic kicks, it’s no surprise that winter heralds in the boat party season. And leading the charge is Matt Charles’s Never Get Out The Boat parties, which run from Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa. Joining him on this deep house voyage were debutants Rayner and Wisqo who dropped a deep, tech-ish set including cuts from Ron Carroll and Justin Martin, and several of their own productions. Following up were Matt Charles and Infusion’s Charl Chaka who played infectious deep house sets, culminating in X-Press 2’s ‘Lazy’. With free entry and 150 like-minded day-time party people on board the 2-level boat, the NGOTB parties look to have struck a winning formula.

Looking Back Chase & Status @ Trilogy
What a difference 5,000 miles makes. Back in the UK or Europe, a Chase and Status DJ gig would be held in a 5,000 plus capacity venue. So Dubai could consider itself lucky that it got to see the DnB and dubstep warriors in the relatively intimate confines of Trilogy. And the sold-out crowd were on high alert for the ‘End Credits’ duo, abetted by MC Rage, as they ripped and roared through an upfront set of bass tracks, including big hitters by Plan B and a mid-set airing of ‘Blind Faith.’ And according to our sources, you could well be seeing the full band later next year, in a bigger live music venue.
Marc Jacobs @ Art Sawa Halloween, a time for all manner of ghouls and ghosts. And the witching hour lived up to its reputation at the packedout Marc Jacobs event at Art Sawa, as it literally came alive with hundreds of impeccably dressed ghouls, goblins, ghosts and, erm, werewolf construction workers. Musically, audio tonic’s Mr Mr was on hand to deliver his usual deep house session, while a crew of zombies and aerialists whipped up a frenzy on the dancefloor.

Local News NYE fireworks
In the last issue, we unveiled the news that Snoop Dogg was going to be headlining Atelier/Festival III at Meydan, and we can now reveal that the 'Drop It Like It's Hot' star will be joined by Fatihless' Sister Bliss and Maxi Jazz, the Gorillaz Soundsystem and half of Duck Sauce, Armand Van Helden (pictured) making it one of the biggest line ups we've seen in the Middle East. Early bird tickets are on sale now for Dhs400.

Did you know the World Parachuting Championships were taking place in Dubai? Us neither, but our attention was pricked when we found out that Katy Perry and Usher would be brought in to perform at the closing ceremony on Saturday December 8. The double-header gig doesn't come cheap — regular tickets start at Dhs450 — but with a huge array of hits, Katy Perry is one of the biggest pop stars on the globe right now, while Usher is no slouch, with over 65 million record sales to his name. Head to wpcconcert.ae for more information and tickets.
Trilogy of bookings
It might be one of the longest running clubs in town, but Trilogy also has one of the most forward looking line ups of any venue in the Middle East in the coming weeks. With the bass of Chase and Status still fresh in our ears from their recent visit, the club has invited down Drum Code label owner Adam Beyer while man-of-the-moment Maceo Plex (pictured) headlines at the start of December. Before all that though, Booka Shade return for their annual end of the year date, November 29 to be precise.
Looking Forward Creamfields make an Example Apart from Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta — we say apart, obviously they're huge names — the Creamfields line up was looking a little sparse compared to previous years, with the returning Riva Starr, Arty, AN21 and Max Vangelli the other internationals. But they've bulked up their December 7 line up at Yas Island with Example and DJ Wire, while deep, dark techno types Gunther and Stamina from Beirut have also been added to the bill. Tickets are Dhs275 and it's an 18+ event.

Switching off from the fast pace of life isn't always that easy in Dubai. Which is where the inaugural Yoga and Music festival comes in. Held at the Westin Mina Seyahi from December 6-8, it's a 3 day celebration of chilling out, with 7 rooms of yoga and lectures and sunrise sessions, while spiritual leader Pierre Ravan is also on hand to close out the Friday night. dubaiyogafest.com.

Looking Forward Rumours Gangnam Style's Psy and Aerosmith could be heading out to Dubai if one promoter gets their way (although not together, we assume). Dubai Jazz Fest is confirmed to return to Festival City from February 14-22 next year. Fast-rising electro/progressive DJ Hardwell is rumoured to be heading out this way next year. Hold on tight DnB heads: RAM Records head honcho Andy C is coming out for Globalfunk in January.

If you've been paying attention, you'll have noticed that something's been stirring in Ras Al Khaimah recently, with Norman Jay MBE dropping a classic Good Times set at the Amasi Beach at the Al Hamra Palace hotel a few weeks ago. He was just the first in a long line of internationals, with Just Be AKA Bushwacka! — of Layo and… fame — playing on Friday December 7. We caught up with the 'Love Story' star to find out more ahead of the gig…
Welcome back to the UAE — did you have to Google Ras Al Khaimah when the offer came in? Haha, no, but I have now! Anywhere else odd/ interesting you’ve played during your time? So many places. The best thing about my work is getting to see the world and discover interesting places/people/food, etc. I feel so blessed.
You’ve played in Dubai several times, how have you found the city? It is very different. The weather is always amazing, and everything looks so new and clean and smart. It’s cool! You celebrated your 40th birthday in Ibiza recently, how was the party, and how long did it go on for? The party was amazing. We
started at Sands beach bar in the early afternoon and stayed there until midnight. Then we moved to The Underground and partied until 7am. It was so special. You’re playing a beach set — will that affect what
you play, will you change your normal style? I will work out the crowd when I arrive. It is impossible to say until I am actually there as I really don’t know what to expect, but I will do my best to rock the crowd. You’re also playing solo — have you done this quite often?
I have done this a lot — I started off solo 25 years ago — and I have still done the odd solo gig over the years while working with Layo. I am focussing fully on the Just Be solo project from 2013 onwards, although Layo and I will still play in London every two months. You were involved with The End, one of the UK’s leading clubs — how do you fill that gap in your time and energy now? Well actually it was Layo’s club — my involvement was playing there once a month. My time and energy has gone into the studio and I was doing quite a lot of photography for a while too, although the studio is once again taking up all my time. Apart from gigs like these, what’s the grand plan for yourself and Layo & Bushwacka? Well as I said, from 2013 onwards it’s all about Just Be although I will be still releasing more techno releases as Bushwacka! And what can people expect from your set in Dubai? Smiling faces, lots of jumping around, and quality music.
Just Be @ Amasi Beach, Al Hamra Palace Hotel, Ras Al Khaimah, Friday December 7. 050 310 4785.

Record label owner, radio personality, club DJ, festival organiser and promoter — and still one of the nicest men in dance music. Ahead of his overdue return to Dubai, we caught up with the ever-green Gilles
Just
Gi lles
Welcome back to Dubai, always good to see you — what are your memories of the city? I have great memories of coming to Dubai, particularly in the early days at Shehab's events [at the now defunct iBO], the scene then was really buoyant and it felt like it was at a peak — however there has certainly been a renaissance in soulful electronic music and global beats, so I’m very happy to be coming back after a couple of years.
And how much will your sets differ from when you’ve played here before, do you always have a fresh set lined up? They differ from week to week, there’s so much music com-
ing through to me these days especially with all the music I get through the radio that my playlist is constastly developing. I doubt very much that I will play anything I’ve played before. You’re a busy busy man with gigs, radio shows, label commitments and a festival. If you had to keep just one, what would it be? At this stage of my life it would have to be the radio as it’s something I can happily retire into even if it means just playing jazz records on a small unlikely digital radio station – which in fact is my dream. Music is always evolving, always growing — what’s catching your ear at the moment? The Kendrick Lamar album [Good Kid, Mad City] even though he’s a global mega star — you can still get great music that sells loads. In the same way I really like the new Frank Ocean album [Channel Orange]. There are a ton of really cool new interesting acts coming out of London like The Hicks, Nick Mulvey, Anushka The White Lamp and signers like Rainy Milo, but a group that I really loved, when I heard them for the first time this year is a group called Troumaca from Birmingham, they where so good that I signed them to my label [Brownswood].
What’s your take on the current DJ culture, do you think young DJs are getting into it for the right reasons? Why not, I didn’t have any particular agenda when I was 15 and if you like music and it excites you – join in! My son who’s 11 can already mix better than me! Sure some people think maybe that it’s an easy way to success but only the true survive in the long run. What’s the best party you’ve played this year? And where’s still left to play around the world for you? Worldwide Festival 2012 SETÉ,
which is the best of every thing from sound, location, crowds, DJs and live artists. It’s my hand picked annual fantasy week. Apart from that I loved playing at The Block in Tel-Aviv; Japan never disappoints and my new residency at the Bellevilloise in Paris has been a terrific surprise. I really want to play in Argentina and Peru… maybe next year? You started out on pirate radio and have made your way to 6Music — did you ever think that was going to happen when you were making illegal broadcasts from the roof of buildings? Of course not I was just having a laugh and it was great! One step led to another and I’ve been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. Being a club DJ on the radio as club culture has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. And finally, what can we expect from your beach set in multi-cultural Dubai? Tropical bass meets swinging samba and deep minimal house with minor chord magic. Ipanema presents Gilles Peterson plays Nasimi Beach, Friday November 23, Dhs100 after 7pm.
SwedishHouseMafia: Behind the b rand
Together they're three fairly successful DJs, but together they've created one of the biggest dance music acts of the last decade, and their One Last Tour, which hits Dubai on November 16, is looking like one of the biggest dance music tours in history. But how did the three Swedes get this far, what's the secret to their success? We quizzed local brand and design expert Pablo Munez to find out…
In a nutshell, what is branding? There is a great misconception that branding is just having a logo. Branding is much more than this, it’s about the first impression, the feeling, it’s a person’s gut feeling about your product, service or company. Branding is creating something that is able to play on a person’s perception to help grow trust, emotion and popularity towards your product, service or company. A good brand relies more on your target audiences feelings that yours.
What does the name suggest, is it a strong one in branding terms? It’s a good brand name and works well. The use of ‘Mafia’ gives a slight underground element to the name, also an element of family. It gives fans an idea of something that
they can be part of. Using House within the name helps people associate them to the correct style of music, this works more for people who may not have heard any of the tracks before. The trio have gone from 3 DJs with successful careers in their own right (Axwell, Angello, Ingrosso) and in just a few years turned into one of the leading dance music acts in the world. How much of that is due to talent, and how much to branding? You can’t take away the achievements of their individual DJ careers but I bet that a lot of people who listen to and visit Swedish House Mafia shows have no ideas who Axwell, Angello,
Ingrosso are. If they do, they won’t recognise them as individual DJs and would probably never have seen them perform individually. The branding sells them as a package, and merged them into an individual act. The press release calls them a band (when they’re a DJ group) — why have they done that? In my opinion this is to appeal to a wider audience throughout the world. Over the last few years bands have been the “cool” thing to go see. In the commercial world there is that stigma that a DJ “just plays CDs” (as we all know DJs are actually very talented) but to some random student in America who has heard one SHM track, going to see a band is a much more attractive option than a DJ Group.
They’ve created their last tour into an interactive event, and used lots of 3 dots — why have they done that? With the growth of technology and social media in the last decade they are able to do this within a commercial market. It’s all about creating these extra interactive elements that other artists don’t do, this sets your event apart. They've created a 3 dots symbol, previously they used 3 stars, which can come across as a bit pretentious, and that’s a dangerous thing to play with. I think the move to the dots is a great example of a brand maturing. Using social networks and the placements of the three dots all over the world is very bold, it gives that feeling of strength within the industry. The way they have done it is a good example of guerilla marking. Even if someone doesn’t know what the three dots represent, seeing them will make them want to know, and start asking questions. That’s the great thing about the human mind, intrigue: give them something to think about and 90% of the time they will go find out about it.
Like I mentioned previously, branding is all about your target audiences feelings, not yours. For me the 3 dots really do represent how Swedish House Mafia sit within their industry. Big, bold and with global domination. Readers can also upload their images to the website — why have they done this? This helps create that friendly social environment, social is good. That section of the website pulls hashtags from Twitter, Tumblr & Instagram, and shows all of the images that are attached to these posts. People are creating their own images, post photos of tickets, and showing how excited they are about the tour, constantly growing the buzz worldwide. The power of Twitter, Tumblr & Instagram is mind blowing (not to mention the social elements through Facebook). If you’re not using these, you must start now.
Which other DJs have a strong brand? Daft Punk, the helmets, the logotype, the pyramid: it doesn’t get much better than this. I think that’s all that needs to be said on these guys. Me just saying Daft Punk probably did enough. Avicii does it very well. Personally I’m not a fan, but his brand identity is very strong. The amount of people I’ve seen with his logotype tattooed is crazy, and they are also crazy, it’s like a cult. He does very well at getting his brand everywhere. I was familiar with his brand before I even heard any of his music. And what can Dubai DJs do to increase their brand, any easy, quick tips? First impressions are key, you only get one. Represent your style of music and your placement within the industry. If you’re unable to show them what you can on the decks or in the studio, then there is a good chance their first
impression will be your logo or name on that flyer in their hand or flashing up on that event website. You need to give that correct first impression. If you don’t have the budget to go to an agency for help, go to local universities, find the young creatives. These people are passionate and have fresh ideas, often students will offer to work for free, they need exposure too.Use social media, market yourself, give away free mixes, tickets, attract people to your page, then hit them with an amazing first impression that they wont forget.Branding doesn’t happen overnight, you cant just have a logo and expect it to work and at the same time you don’t have to do everything all at once. A brand is never finished, it’s always evolving, it needs to grow with you. As long as it always excites you, your on the right track. Swedish House Mafia, One Last Tour, World Trade Centre, Friday November 16, 9pm3am, Dhs350. For design/branding advice, pablomunez@me.com
Nostalgia is big business, and in Dubai, business is good. Ahead of the 90s themed Mixtape Rewind night featuring such luminaries as Haddaway and Snap!, we put Go West, Jenny Bergen of Ace of Base fame and No Mercy to the test to see who was really paying attention during the decade… Complete the sentence: In West Philadelphia, born and raised… Go West: A little white bull, little white bull. No Mercy: One of my favourite fighters and friends named Bernard Hopkins was born and later became middle weight boxing champion of the world! Jenny: On the playground is where I spent most of my days. Fresh prince in Bel air: Will Smith. Answer: On the playground is where I spent most of my days. Zero points each for Go West
and No Mercy, and quite, quite bizarre answers, 1 point for Jenny. What year did Tony Blair come to power? Go West: 1997? No Mercy: 1995, before Google. Jenny: 1997. Answer: 1997, one point to Go West and Jenny. What was the biggest selling track of the 90s? Go West: ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney? No Mercy: I think ‘I Believe I Can Fly’ by R. Kelly…
Jenny: ‘I Will Always Love You’ by W. Houston. I love TLC Waterfalls. Answer: Elton John’s ‘Candle in the Wind’. Whitney came in at 10th, and R Kelly’s not even on the same page. What was Crinkly Bottom? Go West: I’m afraid to say that I know that it was the name of the house in the TV show, Noel’s House Party. No Mercy: No clue. Jenny: TV show type, a place; castellike. Answer: It was the fictious home of Noel’s House Party on BBC1, another point for Go West and Jenny. It also gave the world Mr Blobby, for which Noel should eternally suffer. What were the 5 powers of Captain Planet? Go West: I’ve never heard of Captain Planet but I’ll have a guess: • He could hold his hands in fire the longest. He could tell what you had eaten for lunch just by looking at you • He was able to play all of Holst’s Planet Suite on an old red Gibson 335
• He was really good at keepy upy • He had powerful love and love is the answer. No Mercy: Never heard of him! Jenny: Invisibility, flying, strength and speed, manipulation of weather and the four elements, Telepathic ability. Answer: Earth, fire, wind, water and heart. Go West get a comedy point, as does Jenny for literally naming every superpower ever. Who was the host of Blockbusters? Go West: Bob Holness. There was a fantastic untruth that was circulated (and believed by many) that Bob Holness played sax on ‘Baker Street’. No Mercy: No idea either! Jenny: Bob Holness and Micheal Aspel, half and half of the 90s. Answer: Bob ‘I’ll have a P please’ Holness. Extra point for Go West and Jenny for random knowledge. What type of animal was Dolly? Go West: A sheep.
No Mercy: A camel? Jenny: A sheep. Cloned from a sheep. The first big clone. Answer: Dolly was the first genetically cloned animal, and was indeed a sheep. Another point to Go West and Jenny. You awake at the back No Mercy? What year did Kurt Cobain die? Go West: I don’t know, but it was a sad year. No Mercy: Drug overdose. Jenny: 1994. Answer: 1994. And clearly not, in answer to our previous question... Jenny strides into the lead with another point… Which Pixar film was the first to be created entirely from computer? Go West: Toy Story? No Mercy: Toy Story! Jenny: The first big film was Toy Story, before that it was a lamp. Answer: Toy Story. Yes! You all got the answer right! Hallelujah!
Which President had a run in with a cigar? Go West: Bill Clinton. No Mercy: George W Bush. Jenny: Lots, but if you’re looking for a scandal then Bill Clinton will give you one. Answer: Bill Clinton. A bush was involved, but not in the manner you were thinking No Mercy… Point to Go West and Jenny. The highest grossing film of the 90s was? Go West: Titanic. No Mercy: Titanic. Jenny: Incredibly enough, Titanic. Answer: Titanic. Point to each. The verdict: No doubt about it, Jenny takes the (imaginary) prize, getting all but one question right. Go West take second with an impressive 9 points, with No Mercy trailing with a quite pitiful 2 correct answers. As losers, they get a night out with Mr Blobby and Noel Edmonds. Music News... Free dubstep!
He was one of the first dubstep pioneers to realise the American potential for dance music, and UK export Rusko is once again leading from the front as he’s promised to release all of his future records free of charge. In a statement, Rusko said: “It’s about promotion and not profit — I want to give the fans the music in real time. If they can help me promote it too then it’s essentially what a label does anyway but just without copyright restrictions... I just want everyone to be able have my music if they want it.” What looked to be a one-off gesture of goodwill to fans has now become a certified career strategy. Both of Rusko’s albums have been released on Diplo’s Mad Decent label but now the UK dubstepper’s contract with the imprint is up. A spokesman for Rusko said: “He finished his deal [with Mad Decent] and rather than renew it, or find another label, he’s decided to self-release for free to fans with the aim of getting his music out there widely to the max amount of people in the easiest way possible.”

State of the DJ Nation
Acclaimed US dance Magazine Big Shot has interviewed 90 international DJs for a feature asking each about their assessment of today’s club culture, its ‘most disturbing trend’ and ‘how are we going to make the scene better. While DJs including Nic Fanciulli and Martin Eyerer were broadly positive, the overall response from the mainly nonEDM pool of DJs was generally negative with ex- X Press 2 man Ashley Beedle (pictured over page) the bleakest of all. “DJ culture is dying as an art form,” the legendary British acid house/ disco DJ suggested, “It has become very easy for people to “DJ” due to technology, but
Look and Listen technology doesn’t make a DJ. DJs need personality and know how to select and program a journey... It’s not about being a superstar on a stage, it’s about making a party,” he added. US house legend Angel Alanis also blasted superstar DJs on stage, criticising ‘Steve Angello and the like’ for spinning ‘prerecorded sets’. “Punk occurred because people couldn’t stand mainstream pop any more, or what it stood for. The same cultural blip is happening now to an extent,” Freaks producer Luke Solomon suggested. “The animosity toward the mainstream pop DJ is creating a fierce reaction, which is not a bad thing.” Big Shot editor Darren Ressler told Infusion the feature has been his magazine’s most popular ever and said he’s planning to repeat it in future years. “The idea for the story came to me after the DJ Sneak/Steve Angello feud,” he explained. “I’ve been covering DJ culture for many years, and I believe this was the first time the veil was raised between mainstream and underground as many in the scene were extremely vocal about their opinions on the matter. It got me thinking about where DJs really see the culture as a whole, the craft and each other, especially with some DJs having fantastic success as of late.” “While there will always be much debate in our scene (old school DJing vs. laptop DJing, mainstream vs. underground, etc.) DJ culture isn’t going away,” Darren added, “because it is being driven by people with passion and talent who are constantly innovating.”
Space Dubai!
Space Ibiza have confirmed they are to open at least three franchise clubs next year, including one in Dubai, another in Brazilian seaside resort Balneário Camboriú, a third giant 13,000 capacity club in New York, in the venue Sankeys previously coveted (New York Post). The original Space Dubai was due to be built last year in the old Wafi space occupied by Plan B, but the new location has not been confirmed yet.

Album Reviews... Swedish House Mafia - Until Now
As our feature earlier in the magazine shows, Swedish House Mafia have, in a very short space of time, created one of the strongest brands in dance music. And central to that brand is the music, their calling card. And on Until Now, their 79 minute, 22 track mix featuring original and remixed tracks (a lot of which are their own), they’ve succeeded in one of any brand’s key points: consistency. Nearly every track is high octane pop house (pouse?), full of shrieking synths, escalating melodies and trigger happy beats: it’s not so much a mix as the Never Ending Adrenaline Story, each track out muscling the previous one. Which is fine on the dancefloor to a point, but after 40 minutes of sonic bombardment on your car/home stereo/iPod, you’re aching for a breakdown, a melodious cuddle to balance it all out. And instead you’re greeted with all the warmth of a Mahiki bouncer as the next tune brutally begins its relentless march into your cerebral cortex. It’s about as unsubtle as a small ADD child making music with a broken car alarm, but if that’s your thing, then this is album is as consistent as anything we’ve heard in years.
Muse - 2nd Law
This UK three piece have been on the precipice of plausible rock since they began back in 1994: part rampaging rock, part operatic production and all pieced together with seismic riffs and outlandish lyrics that read like 6th form poetry, they’ve consistently teetered on the brink. So does 2nd Law, their latest album based on one of the pivotal laws of physics hold any clues? Yes, it shows, once and for all, that the band are undeniably bonkers, and often brilliantly so. Opener ‘Supremacy’ is a semirestrained Bond theme tune (in the way that only Muse can make a pop overture sound semi-restrained) while Olympic song ‘Survival’ is a cappella pop rock that borrows from the best of The Who and Queen to create a soaring, odd ball beauty. And while the album might not have lived up to lead singer Matt Bellamy’s initial assertion that it would be “christian gangsta rap jazz odyssey, with some ambient rebellious dubstep and face melting metal flamenco cowboy psychedelia” (he’s joking - we think), 2nd Law finds the band blending new influences like dubstep with their interplanetary rock to impressive effect. Andy Buchan
Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Lupe Fiasco - Food & Liquor, The Great American Rap Album pt.1
Hip hop’s outspoken consciousness, Lupe Fiasco is at his best when he’s focussed: and on F&L, he takes America to task, dipping into politics, racial equality and looking into his crystal ball to predict the future. Underpinned by bolshy beats and with a Kanye-esque delivery, this is Fiasco at his game-changing, firebrand best. Beat Antenna - The Polygraph EP
Being in a band is easy. Being a good band in a city that doesn’t support live music as much as it should, is a lot harder. So credit must go to Dubai 5 piece Beat Antenna, who, through line up changes, and Dubai’s ever shifting musical climate, have built up an impressive fan base. And it’s one based on their no frills indie soundscapes, pulling together influences like The Verve, The Who and Oasis to create a winning template. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but the Polygraph EP doesn’t lie to you — it’s rock solid indie delivered with style and confidence.

DJ Booth: Masterstepz
A DJ of international repute, and an ex Choice FM resident, Masterstepz now calls Dubai his home, with regular gigs at No.1 Fridays and 411 at People by Crystal
One thing you might not know about me is… I used to be a professional hip hop dancer when I was younger. I was privileged to dance in music videos for groups such as Soul II Soul and even went on Tour with Public Enemy. My favourite ever record is... My top 3 that come to mind are Bob Marley, ‘One Love,’ Biggie Smalls, ‘One More Chance’. And of course my own hit, ‘Masterstepz Melody’. DJing is much like... Food, it’s hard to go a day without putting the fuel in your body. When you don’t eat properly you get weak and start feeling ill. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... The Dubai scene is very fresh as there are so many different varieties of music to satisfy the diverse cultures here in Dubai. I love the fact that in one day you party at the beach, pool or on a boat then in the evening be club surrounded by people from all walks of life. I’m really proud of... My ten years as a radio presenter for one of the UK’s leading radio stations. If I could change one thing about anything it would be... Smoking in public places. As a non-smoker there is nothing worse than coming out of a night club with your throat burning and eyes stinging from other people’s smoking, My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Being signed to Violator Management in New York, which has given me the opportunity to work with some of the greatest DJs, rappers and singers in the game. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... Back in the 80s at the big warehouse parties in New York that went on to 12am the next day. I’m not a politician but... I don’t even like the word politics as generally politicians are serving their own agendas rather than influencing not only regional but international politics. My political ideology is to enjoy my life without harming others, to discover, to learn, to understand, to grow and to leave a positive mark in the world. soundcloud.com/masterstepz

Behold The Locus One of the bright young things on Dubai’s local music scene, Behold The Locus started life as Fabian Martin’s solo project before blossoming into the 5 piece you see today
How would you describe your sound? We’re all about melody, one listen to any of the songs from our Self titled Debut EP or the Upcoming Album ‘Amplifier’ and you’ll hear big choruses, massive harmonies mixed with catchy guitar hooks and meaty DnB arrangements. We consciously don’t label our music and we do not subscribe to a particular genre. We most often get labelled ‘Alternative’ and I’m like Alternative to what? Being a musician in Dubai is much like... Being a big fish in a small pond. There is so much talent here but every band or solo artist is chasing the same gig. I’m sure the majority of the working class population are not aware of the thriving original music scene here, and that’s where radio stations and music labels need to open their doors. Virgin Megastores have embraced Dubai musicians (kudos to them) but with a lack of radio support, the scene is miles away from where it could be at the moment. My first musical influence was... The Beatles. What’s the best gig you’ve played? F1 Yasalam Abu Dhabi 2010, We didn’t know what to expect for our first gig in the Capital, but there must’ve been a 1,000 or more kids that night, mostly Arabic speaking and they got into our music instantly. Band motto? Musique sans Frontieres. The best lyrics of all time are... Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights! Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight! (Bob Marley). The best local band is... ‘Diligent Thought (RIP?)

With Movember upon us once again, raising awareness for men’s health, we decided to celebrate some of the finest moustaches and beards in the DJ and musical world.
Seth Troxler A fine-lipped pencil moustache entirely befitting his intellectual take on house music. Andy Weatherall A sturdy handlebar moustache as befits a no nonsense Northern man who helped shape the history of dance music.
Brandon Flowers Manly, but with more than a hint of femininity, The Killer’s frontman’s facial furniture aptly sums up his personality.
Tom Middleton The Jedi knight of the round tables, Middleton also sports a fittingly knowledgeable beard, one that you know he strokes thoughtfully in times of need. Justice Part rock and roll, part dirty electro and all unkempt and Parisian, Gaspard from Justice’s top lip warmer is a classic.
High Rankin As befits a man who makes off-the-wall dubstep, this bass warrior has a facial tribute that’s equal parts 20s Teddy boy and East London dandy.
Sebastien Tellier Yes, this is a beard, so technically shouldn’t be included. But when the beard is this rugged and fulsome, we just had to write about it. ZZ Top We couldn’t conclude this round up without including the hirsute Toppers. Amusingly enough, the only member of the band with a moustache is called Mr Beard, and even a $1 million endorsement from Gillette could get the boys to shave their beards. movember.com

You’ve got to love the Japanese dedication to design, but we fear they might have taken things a step too far now as they’ve created a toilet that doubles up as a goalkeeper. The Super Great Toilet Keeper (love the name, btw guys) calculates the flight of the football, pivots on its axis and fires a small ball from the bowl to parry the incoming football. Utterly pointless, so we can’t imagine the company being flushed with success (ahem).

Pint to prove The Scots, it’s reputed, enjoy a drink. Which perhaps explains why one Scottish firm has created the world’s strongest beer, an eye-watering 65% drink called Armageddon that will cost you Dhs240 for a single 330ml bottle. Made from crystal malt, wheat and flaked oats, it’s then freeze fermented to bring it to the required ABV. A spokesman said: “Despite being 65%, the beer has a lot of flavour - malty, hoppy, slightly sweet and lots of yeast still in the beer. Be careful though, smelling it is probably enough to put you over the limit!” Brewery founder Lewis Shand told Standard Media: “The phrase “delivers a punch” doesn’t quite cut it — delivers a supersonic charged explosion is more appropriate.”

Burj Khalifa four times bigger than original to be built in India DELHI: Plans for a replica of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa four times higher than the original were unveiled in Delhi yesterday. The 3,320-metre tall Burj India, which is expected take 20 years to build and cast at least 40 per cent of the city in permanent shadow, is seen by many in the Indian capital as a welcome tit-for-tat response to the recent unveiling of plans to construct a replica of the Taj Mahal in Dubai. “It’s going to cost the government around $6 billion to build, so they’re going to have to significantly trim spending on pretty much all public services over the next few decades to pay for it,” said Indian economic expert Ramjit Dhansak. “In fact, according to figures, there’s going to be one doctor and one part-time teacher for the whole country until 2025, and the army isn’t going to have the resources to remain in Kashmir. Then there’s the construction itself, which is going to displace around two million people, destroy thousands of important historic landmarks and reduce much of Delhi to a noisy, uninhabitable building site for 20 years. But everyone in India is behind this development 100 per cent.” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Music is always evolving, with new styles like future garage, trap and moonbhaton springing up. What’s your take on the genre debate?
Fedde Not So Grand Good question, and it’s one I often ponder before falling asleep at night on my 100 thread Egyptian cotton sheets next to my harem of beautiful women, and last night’s half eaten Zaatar W Zeit. Music moves so quickly that I’ve no choice but to move with the times. So I’ve updated my Now That’s What I Call Habibi House 2011 series with some deep house and nu-disco — I’m pretty far ahead of the curve on that one I think. But what a lot of people forget is that I virtually invented music and DJ culture in this part of the world — without me, there wouldn’t be any future Fujairah funk (which Flying Lotus ripped off for his sound), and Sharjah would still be listening to 1970s Arabic tunes and not the musical battleground you see today. ANGRY MONKEY Time for a little history lesson, my little Chimpanzees… Know that sideways peace sign you casually throw out in clubs/to your mum, yeah? Well it’s called a Deuce and replaced “Peace” as a Hip Hop Shout Out in the late 80s. While its origins are disputed between East and West Coast African American communities, the flipping and tilting of the peace sign has become a gesture that implies you are streetwise, or “shows a ‘hater’ you don’t care what they think. And it seems there are an awful lot of Brits, Australians, Lebanese, Saffas and Indians in Dubai with either an abundance of haters, a chronic, isolated palsy or spasm in the presence of cameras. What befuddles The Monkey is who might be upsetting you while you’re smiling with your buddies and the beautiful lady, for the Dubai Events photographer, then writing your name down for him afterwards? The Monkey suggests you stop throwing out confusing sign language unless you want to be lumped in with the omnipresent Chris Brown. Being a woman beating douchebag isn’t the best look, so maybe time to re-evaluate your photo poses eh...
