Big ups to champion surfer Mick Fanning who punched a shark during a recent attack at a competition in South Africa. The definition of manly. Congrats to Marko Smokingroove on the arrival of your new boy, the future of DJing is here (and very, very cute). Big music news as Ma’ana Dubai, a 21 track album covering the city’s dance music scene, has been released worldwide, featuring many of our favourite Dubai producers. Mabrook!
GUEST LIST BLACK LIST Dear David Guetta, not only would your music soundtrack the elevators in Hades, but you do NOT bring a live horse into the middle of your club night at Pacha just because. Hope the horse hoofed you where the sun don’t shine. Not being invited to the ultrasecret Rudimental live show last week seriously hurt our cool credentials! Steve Aoki plumbed new depths when he dropped the Titanic theme tune at Tomorrowland recently. The death knell for EDM has never sounded so loud or stupid.

WE LOVE Stereo Arcade
We’ll always stand by the fact that the best clubs are the simplest – all you need is a dark space, good sound and good music. Throw in a well stocked bar and you’re well on your way. That said, there are a lot of excellent concept clubs in town, and the latest – and possibly greatest – is Stereo Arcade, on JBR. The right hand side of the venue is the Angry Monkey bar (a chain from Beirut, but also the new weekly hangout for our simmering simian), serving up
live music from resident band VHS, as well as real good food and drinks. But the true genius lies in the other two rooms. Bisecting the club and the Angry Monkey bar is a compact room housing 12 fully loaded arcade machines, fitted out with over 5,000 games from the last 30 years. Street Fighter, Pac Man, Outrun, you name it, you can play it. For free. Alongside that, there’s a slushy machine and a hot dog with your name on it (hold the mayo). Turn left out of that room and you’ll come to the main club, a 400 capacity, lovingly crafted room with a huge LED screen, a motherboard designed bar and some of the best sound and lighting we’ve seen and heard in the city. Thursdays are 90s, and Fridays are 80s, so there’s no ubiquitous deep house or hip hop soundtrack. And if you get cheesed out, you can always head to the arcades or into the Angry Monkey bar for some live music. Winner stays on Golden Axe, yeah?

He’s joined by Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE residents Jean B and Jixo & Danz, with doors from 11pm.

Livin’ la vida loca – Pacha unleash their inner party animal
After an excellent opening party with American EDM star Dillon Francis, Pacha have launched their new season of events, with Be Loca running every Thursday night in the main room. Alongside that, the Madinat venue has launched a new dinner show, Deception, which will make the most of their excellent Asian-themed menu, cocktail menu and their eye-popping entertainers (the aerialists have to be seen to be believed). Looking further ahead the team have got some seriously big bookings lined up – oh, hey Fatboy Slim – and their awardwinning Rooftop opens again in mid to late September. Ahead of that though, we spoke to the new Entertainment Director, Melchior Rosell, to find out what to expect from Be Loca, when their crack team of residents including Ejaz, Rico, Stu Laurie, Skinny Loop and Soulninja unleash their inner party animal…
Pacha is coming alive on Thursdays – what can we expect? We are creating a unique experience based on an animal's wild nature, embracing a level of craziness through music, performances and decor. Loca in Spanish means crazy, therefore the theme of the night is to be wild, crazy and just enjoy and embrace your inner animal. Where did the concept come from, is it something you've seen in Ibiza this summer? The concept is unique, having come from our very own in-
house creative department. We have never seen something similar, which makes it such an exciting project. If you could be an animal on the dancefloor, what would you be? Definitely a Tigerrrr! What's the music policy for Thursdays? The music played is open format and accessible house music, where we want to cater to as many people as possible while still staying true to our Pacha roots. You've had big names like
Dillon Francis, Paul Van Dyk and Martin Solveig this year – any other big names booked in for the up-coming season? Yes we are actually very excited about the up-coming season as we are in the process of booking even more amazing DJs that we think will surprise everyone, in a good way of course. To give you an idea and a bit of a teaser Fat Boy Slim is already booked and confirmed. And how has the dinner show evolved over the summer, what's the new theme? Our summer dinner show is called 'Deception' which is based on illusions, where an intricate and exciting blend of exquisite food is coupled with an unforgettable magical experience. We will launch our next show on September 8 which will be our biggest and most exciting show yet. We are putting a lot of energy and love into it and are excited to share it with everyone. As you can tell, lots of great things are coming…

Already a firm Infusion favourite, the Journey Through House team are back with another double header, as they bring dance music veterans K Klass to Abu Dhabi (August 13) and Dubai (August 14) for a weekend of classic house tunes. We caught up with the ‘Let Me Show You’ DJs to get their defining moments of house music…
Tune? Solu Music feat Kimblee, "Fade.” The Original version is always the best for me. Moment? When ‘Rhythm Is A Mystery’ went to No.3 in the UK Top 40 in November 1991. Club? The Hacienda, it was like a spiritual experience every Friday night. Gig? Playing at a Cream NYE event at Newcastle Arena after Roger Sanchez and my first track had the line "Throw Your Hands Up In The Air.” I looked out as the vinyl was spinning to see between 5-6,000 people with their hands in the air. People? Meeting Frankie Knuckles was amazing (God rest his soul). Working with Marshall Jefferson was also amazing, a true gentleman.
Influential Tracks? We took a lot of influence from the Def Mix team. Journey Tune? Alison Limerick "Where Love Lives." A classic that always gets a dancefloor moving. History Gig? Performing a 40 min K-Klass live band show at "History - Manchester Oct. 2015" in front of 7,500 as Jon Besant and his History team took it to another level! History Moment? Performing a 45 minute tribute selection of Frankie Knuckles tracks for History @ Media One, Dubai. Things got a little bit emotional. History feat. Music News... The Recipe return
Good news UAE hip hop fans – much loved trio The Recipe are back in the game after a 5 year break from making music and playing live. The trio comprised of Swerte, Perfect Storm and Kaz Money have opened for Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Foreign Beggars and Fat Boy Slim are and are back with the excellent ‘Move On.’ A full release has been promised for later in August, keep up to date with their comeback via Therecipedxb.com.
50 Cent lives up to his name
He was once ranked one of the world’s five richest hip hop acts, but now 50 Cent has filed for bankruptcy. The multiplatinum selling artist has been ordered to pay $5 million in damages for a recent lawsuit, with his lawyer claiming that Fiddy, real name Curtis Jackson, was worth just $4.4 million despite big deals with Walt Disney, Intel, Reebok and Vitaminwater. When asked in court about his luxury items, he told them that it was all rented, borrowed or leased. Jackson has called filing for bankruptcy ‘a strategic business move’ vowing to continue his commercial and financial pursuits.

Ma’ana Dubai – Bootleg Social Records House/Techno // soundcloud.com/bootlegsocial
Dance music has never been bigger in Dubai, so it’s fitting that the city now has its own album, a 21 track selection that brings together nu-disco, house and techno. Named Ma’ana (which is Arabic for together), the album was pulled together from over 70 submissions, which alone tells you how vibrant the scene is. The compilation features several cuts from Infusion Records signings Andy Buchan, Conan Liquid and Matthew Charles, while big guns like Raxon, Smokingroove, Arcade 82 and Nick Hussey are also included. Stand out tracks come in the form of Tom Chubb’s bassbin bothering ‘Still Drive,’ Ilona Maras and Stellar Disco’s deep and soulful ‘Invitation’ while Ray Soo, NFLNT, Sam Farsio & Reddub and Shaun Warner take things into techier territory. It’s wrong to cherry pick from an album this well put together though – dance music is alive and kicking in the region, something this album sums up perfectly.
We always knew Dubai was a hot bed for musical talent, and so it’s been proved with this 21 track album that celebrates the best of Dubai’s house, nu-disco and techno scene. We caught up with the main man behind the project, Bootleg Social’s Tobie Allen, to find out more about the Ma’ana album (it means Together in Arabic), now licensed to Son y Music Middle East
Congratulations on pulling together the album – what was the inspiration for doing this? There have been a few long nights over the last few months getting everything together but I’m really pleased with the way things have panned out. Since I’ve been here in Dubai I have come across such great music and talented producers from the region I thought it would be nice to give not only those
who regularly produce but to those who don’t, a platform to showcase their work. There’s such a vibrant scene here in Dubai it's great to be able to have everyone under one roof as a collective unit. Who's on it and what does it sound like? The album is a cross section of 4/4 beat club sounds. Generally, club music is fragmented into sub genres
and I have tried to fill all of those genres. We have representations of Nu -Disco, Deep House, Chilled House music, Tech house right through to Techno. There is something for everyone so to speak. We have leading producers from the region like Raxon, Smokingroove, Deep Hertz, Arcade 82, Matthew Charles, Conan Liquid, Sam Farsio and Nick Hussey who never fail to impress. We also have a couple of tracks from the likes of Ted Numan, MXD, Ilona Maras and Shaun Warner who are not generally house hold names in Dubai but I’m really proud of the work they have produced. What was the process for choosing the tracks, what were your criteria – were any genres off the table? A few months back I sent out a request via various social channels for submissions. Unfortunately I couldn't have everyone on board so I took my time, sought help and gathered advice from my peers around the world in the music industry to get what I thought was a good representation of the vision. The only criteria for our label was no EDM or commercial music. I have nothing against anyone making EDM or any other type of music, I respect them as it’s all about music, but I didn’t want to confuse the public and the
vision of the album along with the Bootleg Social Records parameters - so we kept it underground. Were you surprised by how many submissions you got, and the quality of them? I was over whelmed with the response and had around 65 submissions. I would have to say around 70 percent of submissions were of ‘release’ quality so it was great fun having the options to create the vision for the label. We hear you're teaming up with audio tonic for the launch party in August? Yes that’s right. What better place to have a launch night? As we know it’s an award winning venue along with an award winning night. Their values in their music policy align with the album so it was a no brainer to team up with them. I’m really looking forward to it. showcasing the album on t
What formats will the album be available on, did you toy with any vinyl releases bearing in mind the format's popularity at the moment? Good question, as I’m someone who was brought up on iconic vinyl. Although the main aim of this whole project is not monetary but purely to showcase the talent in the region, you do have to take into consideration of costs. The album will be a digital release in line with all our other releases on BSR (Bootleg Social Records). Unfortunately costs of pressing vinyl copies is not cost effective at the moment, although I did seriously look at it. I’m hoping the continued rise in vinyl sales continues. What's your musical background, and have you done something like this before? I have been really fortunate and grateful for the time I have had in the music industry. I was lucky enough to get to Ibiza around 1991 if my memory serves me right! With over 20 years in music doing all sorts of crazy things along the way I have experienced many highs and lows. The biggest high was the launch of my record label BSR around 5 years
ago, a real passion which I hold close to my heart. We started off with Tech House and but now specialise in Techno. I have done a couple of albums before. After visiting Ibiza a few years back I was inspired by just hanging around some pools listening to some great music with awesome friends and noting how cool the vibe was. So I released a poolside album to reflect that experience. We have just over 50 releases and for that I’m really proud. And what's your realistic ambition for the album and the music you're putting out? As you have probably noticed in this interview I have kept mentioning the word vision. This is to ultimately get recognition for the artists featured on the album. To showcase their years of dedication and time learning their craft, for love of music in all its forms. I thank infusion for the support, there’s great talent here in this sandpit and it’s great to finally get the project released and licensed on Sony Music Middle East. Ma’ana is available through iTunes Middle East, Beatport, Trackitdown and all good digital stores
DJ Heroes #5 maDJam
Next up in our series is the White Dubai/Beirut resident, who was previously an integral part of the much-loved night Peppermint, while he’s also been an ever present DJ at Creamfields‌
First club you played in Dubai? M-Level Hilton Creek in Deira back in May of 2003 - I was barely 21 which was the minimum age required to get an artist license. It was my first visit to Dubai and beyond the music, it was a very eye-opening experience that clearly said “Wow there is a lot of potential here.” And sure enough after graduating a year later, I moved over from Beirut. First track you played? Eric Prydz (way before anyone knew him) had an awesome track on a White Label 12” simply called “Slammin” that was a basic filtered disco loop that broke down where the vocal says “And finally... for those of you who just gotta have house music.” Best change in the city’s club scene? The variety of places to go, there’s always multiple somethings happening every night and enough to satisfy everyone, until 3am. Worst change in the city’s club scene? The number of people. We used to be a very small tight community of party people that all knew each other, would go to each other’s houses for BBQs and supported each other in anyway like finding jobs, flats, relationships... now there’s so many people here the intimacy is gone. Otherwise happy days. Best club still running from when you started (or best you’ve played if it’s since closed)? Peppermint Club (2004-2008) was unique in its time because it was the only club night in Dubai on a Friday that would get between 1-2,000 people and again it was a community of party lovers dancing it out to house music on a proper dancefloor. Favourite last-tracks of the night (with full house lights on) were Michael Grey’s ‘The Weekend’ or Axwell’s ‘Feel The Vibe.’ Key to longevity as a DJ is… Keep an open mind, like wide open. Adapt your sound/selection to what kind of crowd you are playing to, find the right balance of what you want VS what they want and make a few tiny sacrifices when needed but don’t ever be a complete sell-out. Oh and never hate on others even if they hate on you, takes more effort to hate than to love.
The best way to get gigs is… Just be true to yourself, if you stand out and do well the right people will notice and book you. Unsung Dubai hero? Kennedy Stephenson - the (original/real) Bong parties at the Aviation Club and those secret parties at the Fairmont Penthouse were awesome. It was Kennedy’s sound that defined my first impression of Dubai’s groovy house music scene. Dubai DJ you’d most like to go back to back with? The Smokingroove brothers - both of them. So that’s 3 of us in the booth, 2 tracks by 2 tracks for 12 hours... with enough time to laugh, do tequila shots and have blast! Upcoming gigs? I’ll be playing White Beirut for most of the summer with Greece, Egypt, Ibiza and loads of wild pool/boat/beach house gigs all happening before we re-start the next White Dubai season at the end of September.
TECH TALK
Parrot Zik 2.0 Billed as the ‘most advanced headphones in the world,’ Infusion Magazine put the $400 Parrot Zik 2.0 cans to the test $400. That’s a lot of money. It could buy you 100 days unlimited travel on the Metro, it could get you 2 nights stay at the Atlantis over summer, or it could get you a pair of Parrot’s Zik headphones. The headphones are wireless via Bluetooth and have a very clever in-built system on the
right can – swipe a finger forward across the headphone and it’ll skip a track, trace a finger up or down and it’ll alter the volume and tap it and the music will pause, and tap again to play. Take them off your head, and they’ll automatically pause the music. Very clever, and very easy to use.
Alongside that, they’re actively noise-cancelling with 3 microphones fitted in each ear, as well as 2 mics for voice calls. The headphones can also be controlled by their own dedicated app, whereby you can tweak your EQ settings and adjust the strength of the noise-cancellation, or you can set it in Street Mode that simulate open-backed headphones so that you can hear the world around you (and any traffic). The 2.0 range have been subtly revamped from the 2012 model. They’re now 20 per cent lighter, and very comfortable, with memory foam cushions. Parrot have also updated the digital to analogue conversion rate, meaning these sound bigger and better than their predecessors. One feature they’ve not updated is the battery life – a 150 minute charge will get you 6 hours of Bluetooth and noise cancellation, or 18 hours of noise cancellation if they headphones are wired up. The basic sound is good – there’s a good bass response, even at lower volumes. But as with most noise-cancelling headphones, the treble is slightly muted. But with the EQ and
set up preferences on the app, that’s something that can be manipulated and kept in the memory. Design wise, they’re very simple and elegant, with renowned French designer Philippe Starck creating a very clean, sophisticated pair of headphones. A lightweight aluminum frame connects the pads that house a 40mm neodymium driver with a frequency response between 20Hz and 22kHz. At $400, they’re more expensive than the Beats Studio Wireless range, and with a much shorter battery life. The Vii resident talks us through his music and chocolate addiction, and why he won’t be running for President any time soon
One thing you might not know about me is... I was offered my first paid DJ gig at age 14, but couldn’t go as I wouldn’t have got in! My worst ever job was… Working in a metal factory, boring! My favorite ever record is... Tough question, if it’s a dance track Dave Spoon ‘At Night,’ for alternative it would be any of Paul Weller’s tracks! DJing is much like... Any other creative output such as art, even food. To create something or put something out there which make people feel good and especially your own is a great feeling. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Massively varied. It’s new to me and exciting. The underground scene is very much still developing so to be a part of it is awesome. I’m really proud of... Making the move from the UK to come to Dubai to persue my dreams of being an international artist. What track could you drop in every set? Again tough question, but probably Dave spoon ‘At Night!’ I can’t live without... Cliched, but music. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Playing alongside idols such as Steve Lawler and having my music supported by the likes of Nic Fanciulli and Darius Syrossian. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Oreos, and chocolate in general! If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The 90s, when the rave scene was big and house was more recognised in the UK. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Carl cox or Skream! I’m not a politician but… If I was I’d quit tomorrow and buy some decks. soundcloud.com/michaeldunne-uk

Weird News... The great escape
We all love a good prison escape story (apart from when they’re in our neighbourhood, then not so much). But this one in Mexico that unleashed billionaire drug lord El Chapo, real name Joaquin Guzman was a humdinger. With history of escapes, he was locked up in maximum security, with 17 lockable doors between him and the outside world. His accomplices dug a 1 mile long tunnel underneath his cell complete with air conditioning, electricity – and our favourite bit – a modified motorbike that would speed him to his exit in a nearby town. He now has $4 million bounty on his head, while 7 people have been arrested in conjunction with the escape, including the prison chief.

The ‘Tiger Woods of Scrabble’ – wait stay with us – has just won the French scrabble Championchips despite not speaking a word of French. 48 year old Kiwi Nigel Richards memorized the entire French scrabble dictionary in just 9 weeks and beat off a strong challenge in the final to add to his UK, US and world titles. His skill lies in his photographic memory and talent with numbers, but little is known about the reclusive winner. Ironically considering his lexicon, following the win, he gave one word answers to the waiting journalists hoping to get some insight.

All white on the night?
New Dubai nightclub Xenophobe has been inundated with racist claims after they turned away dozens of would be clubbers last weekend. The club’s spokesman, Kenneth Kobie Khan (better known as KKK in the industry) said that the reports were a whitewash. ‘There’s no racism at our venue. We welcome anyone with a credit card we can max out. That said, we don’t like to allow in Indians, Philipinos, Africans or Pakistani clientele. Nothing personal or racist, but you just won’t get in. Everyone else is fine though, no problem at all.’ One online commenter called ‘Is it cos I is black?’ claimed that the racist club scene in Dubai had hit rock bottom, with ethnic groups often refused entry to the city’s hottest clubs.
Dubai now has more DJs than camels, a new study finds *These stories are not true, this is not a real newspaper. This is a parody/fiction/satire/joke. The Spin is not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Cool Test
Jane Aldersley and Mike Priest from indie/punk night Bad House Party are the disco deviants in this issue’s Cool Test. But who’s indie club, and who’s been refused entry?
Who's the coolest person in your phone book? Jane: That’s impossible to answer, as my phone contact list is a massive steaming pile of unrelenting coolness. E.g. “Louise estate agent” and “guy from Rak Bank”.
Mike: I have 16 different people named Ed on my phone, all with no surname and no other identifying marks. I say Ed wins purely in a quantity over quality kinda way.
Jane: Not long at all. I’m really good at the standing nap, or as I like to call it, stapping.
Mike: Sleep, what’s that?
Jane: Bush confident. Which I am fully aware is 2 words.
Mike: Backpack. it’s fun to say. Give it a go.
What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep?
Coolest word in the world?
Coolest band in the world? Jane: Right now I’d have to say Unknown Mortal Orchestra. They’re so cool I don’t even need to explain why.
Mike: Mac Sabbath - a McDonalds themed Black Sabbath tribute band.
Jane: It smells nice
Mike: Boy, am I glad it’s not infected.
It’s not big and clever but…
Describe your best bass face Jane: Basically all of my facial Mike: Well, considering I actually muscles pucker towards the centre happen to play the bass guitar I’m of my head, eyes do a sort of going to go with “constant.” frowny squint, lips protrude, and chin goes down which is the worst part because I have reached an age where I should try to keep my chin up. This expression will appear in any situation where I need to concentrate, and I have a terrible problem with bitchy resting face anyway, so my bass face is not too far off my normal face.
Coolest track ever made?
Jane: OK serious answer time, I’m gonna go with ‘Deceptacon’ by Le Tigre. It’s punk, indie, pop, and new wave all rolled into one incredible track, and it still sounds so fresh after 16 years.
Mike: In keeping with the fast food theme, you can’t beat Wesley Willis’ “Rock ’N’ Roll McDonalds.”
Your best dance move is… Jane: Lately I’ve discovered the great joyous celebration of life that is crowd surfing.
Mike: The Shopping Trolley: in which one puts imaginary produce into an equally imaginary shopping cart whilst walking on the spot.
What’s your best claim to fame? Jane: I did 4 or 5 gigs as an extra on Shortland Street (NZ Neighbours-style soap opera). I left NZ before they started filming Lord of the Rings otherwise I would’ve definitely been a shortass Hobbit extra.
Mike: When I was younger (and thinner!) I would often get mistaken for one of the dudes in Linkin Park. Kids would make me sign autographs and stuff for them. It still occasionally happens to this day but now I kinda just get looks like “Man, that Linkin Park dude has really let himself go, huh?”
What’s your answer to everything? Jane: Mike’s in charge.
Mike: Ed Zachary’s disease.
Jane: You’re in charge!
Mike: Pretty much that Jane is just SO GOOD at being in charge.
What’s the best insult you could give each other?
Bad House Party, Casa Latina, Thursday August 6, 9pm-3am.

Tribeca Kitchen + Bar Our resident foodie sinks his teeth into a 3 course meal, including a deconstructed cheesecake, at this organic bar and restaurant making waves in JBR‌
Living down on the beach is pretty, pretty good (said in your best Larry David voice). I can see the sea out on the balcony, the cinema is minutes away and we are surrounded by shops and eateries. This month I’ve been sent to the JA Ocean View Hotel to try out newish organic bar and restaurant Tribeca. Sat prominently on the first floor of the Ocean View hotel is the Tribeca Kitchen + Bar, named after one of the most fashionable and sought after areas of New York. Its large lettered open doorway is hard to miss as we are ushered inside and sat in the dining area. The space has been finished to resemble a trendy loft apartment, the kind you see in films with characters in it who could never actually afford to live in such places, with the lighting made from recycled wine bottles and the far wall resplendent with a NY graffiti mural. The wine arrived and we looked over the menu: a few things popped and were quickly ordered with theking prawn with coconut milk and polenta dish first up. Sat in a piping hot oven dish and full of flavour, the prawns were a little over done for my liking and there wasn’t enough of the buttery polenta in it. But on the flipside, it was a very tasty broth and was clean and rich on my palate. My guest plumped for the Burratta and tomato salad. Maybe it was the optional bacon which wasn’t available that night, but the dish didn’t quite sing despite being very nice and fresh. My guest selected a tenderloin for main and I decided to go with a burger from the daily specials. The steak dish sizzled and was packed with flavour mainly from a lovely ragu of porcini
mushrooms, with lovely tender meat. My burger was juicy, the bun light, the salad crisp and the dressing sharp - the only let down were the chips which didn’t taste as home made as the rest of the meal. A quick rest and finally desert: a cheesecake and a chocolate fondue seemed appropriate but were a bit of a mixed bag. The cheesecake whilst creamy, crunchy and opulent was also deconstructed: the reason the cheesecake is a classic is because all the elements work together, it’s tried and tested, it’s ‘Come On Eileen’ at a wedding disco. The chocolate fondue arrived in a hollowed out pineapple filled with fruit to dip into a side bowl of deep dark chocolate, and looked lovely and tasted just as you’d imagine a dark chocolate and fruit fondue to taste. There is so much good to say about this place. It works really well as a bar (definitely go for after work/ evening drinks) and some of the food is really good. But I couldn’t help but think it’s missing a trick. It’s called Tribeca, and has a very cool NY loft feel, but it doesn’t fully embrace the New York food aspect – I wanted chunky beef sandwiches, fried chicken and waffles, a really upmarket hotdog and just a normal New York baked cheesecake. ChadPhunk The Abu Dhabi resident and DJ at Al Maya Island, Turquoiz and Aloft’s Liquid pool parties talks us through his city… The best thing about Abu Dhabi is… Its multi cultured diversity. The worst thing about Abu Dhabi is… Hands down the driving. Formula 1/Creamfields weekend is… The only time half of Dubai comes to Abu Dhabi! Dance/club music in the city is… Growing slowly. Best place to take tourists is: Culturally it would be the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, leisure wise would be Yas water world. Best place for a weekend getaway: St Regis Saadiyat island. Best pool party: Either Al Maya island or Aloft's Liquid rain pool party. Favourite bar: Y bar at the Yas island Rotana. Favourite restaurant/hangout: Cheesecake Factory. Best kept Abu Dhabi secret… I'm going to be a little bit biased on this one as i work there but that little secret is Turquoiz at the St Regis, Saadiyat. The beach and sunsets are amazing. The food and staff are fantastic and the music is OK too! Best late night takeaway/munchies? Specials on the Corniche. soundcloud.com/djchadphunk facebook.com/ChadPhunk
Summer Blockbuster Season!
It’s hot – obscenely hot. You’ve exhausted your box sets and you’ve eaten your own body weight in brunches twice over. Thankfully, there’s an action packed summer film schedule coming our way to save you from the summer tedium. Andy Buchan and Stephen Day pick out best
Inside Out -
August
Pixar are back with a vengeance. After the lacklustre showing of the Cars spin offs and Brave, they return to their roots and bring back one of their best Directors in Pete Docter, responsible for directing Up and Monsters Inc. plus writing Wall-E and having the original story lines for Toy Story 1 and 2. He’s a Pixar legend and he delivers a story based around a set of characters running things inside your head, supported by a grade A set of voices, with situations we can all relate too. Check out the trailer, go see this movie as it’s set up for kids and adults alike, and it’s great to have Pixar back in the fold.
Hader and Diane Lane
Ted 2 -
Director: Pete Dockter Staring: Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Bill
August The foul-mouthed teddy bear is back, and this time Ted wants to have a baby with hiw wife, Tami-Lynn. Family Guy’s McFarlane returns as the film’s overlord, so expect ‘oh no you didn’t gags’ and some sparky buddy banter with Mark Wahlberg. Disengage the brain, sit back and enjoy the laughs.
Director: Seth McFarlane Staring: Mark Wahlberg, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried
Amy -
July 3 Initial reviews have said this heartbreaking documentary on Amy Winehouse is everything her music was – bold, tragic and beautiful. Using an array of video footage taken from camera phones, interviews, TV coverage and home cinema, director Kapadia (who was behind the excellent Senna documentary), charts Amy’s rise and fall vividly, leaving nothing behind. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll immediately stick on her greatest hits on the stereo. This might not make it to Dubai cinema, but definitely try and track it down on DVD this summer.
Director: Asif Kapadiay
Ant- Man -
August This Marvel summer tentpole has been gestating for some time and when visionary British Director Edgar Wright (Shaun Of The Dead) bailed, things didn’t look promising. However Peyton Reed seems to have stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball well into the air. The early trailers show promise and a deft comic edge that Rudd brings to the character of Scott Lang as he’s recruited by an older version of Ant-Man to take on a corporate giant looking to sell the suit as a weapon. It might just be this year’s Guardians Of The Galaxy and another home run for Kevin Feige and team at the studio.
Director: Peyton Reed Staring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas
Mission Impossible 5 Rogue Nation - August Where could this franchise go after the rather spectacular Khalifa climbing Mission 4? Well let’s draft in a man who can write (The Usual Suspects), direct (Jack Reacher) and produce (Valkyrie) all wrapped into one in Christopher McQuarrie. The pace is frantic and the trailer nods to Missions of old with more spying and fighting than gadgets and masks, although I’m sure a few will pop up along the way. Reunited with some of the older members of the IMF, Ethan Hunt must battle the shadowy Syndicate, the film is worth it for the aircraft stunt alone. And yes that is Tom doing it, not a double in sight but I suppose he needs to earn his money somehow. Director: Christopher McQuarrie Staring: Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, oh and Tom Cruise
Fantastic Four -
August
I was never a fan of the Fantastic Four in comic book form and even less on its previous big screen outing, however one thing made me sit up and take note. Josh Trank. After his brilliant found footage debut Chronicle, he has a refreshing take on this story. It might not be to everyone’s taste, as it looks more David Cronenburg body horror than light airy superheroes. But with a dream cast of the cream of current acting youth, it promises to deliver a deeper more characterdriven summer blockbuster than you would expect as a team of scientists invent interdimensional travel with life changing results. Director: Josh Trank Staring: Miles Teller, Jamie Bell, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan and Toby Kebbell
Straight Outta Compton
- August
Sometimes a band comes along that shapes a generation and one such band was N.W.A. They not only changed hip hop forever, but music in general and their legacy goes on with the surviving members still around today either acting, making music or selling overly expensive fashion headphones to people with more money than decent hearing. This story deserves to be told and for once it’s a biopic the band fully support and produced, with Ice Cube’s son playing his Dad in it. The relatively unknown cast are joined by heavyweight character actor Paul Giamatti in what should be a riveting look at how these boys became musical superstars in the dark gang ridden suburbs of downtown L.A. ‘Yo Dre I’ve got something to say…’ Director: F Gary Gray Staring: Aldis Hodge, O’Shea Jackson Jnr, Jason Mitchell, Cory Hawkins and Paul Giamatti
We Are Your Friends -
August 28
When the trailer dropped, we were positive this was a parody film constructed by Wunderground, the dance music satire site. But no, this is America’s big screen take on EDM and the first 3 minutes of trailer footage indicate it’s taking itself faaaaaar too seriously. There is hope, however. The director, Max Joseph, has a long and successful dance music history, and was behind the camera for LCD Underground’s touching DFA documentary, while he was also part of the MTV Catfish team. Hopefully he can temper Hollywood’s heroic impulse and tell the interesting story of how America fell back in love with dance music (and with as few topless Zac Efron shots as possible).
Director: Max Joseph Staring: Zac Efron, Emily Ratajkowski, Jonny Weston
Missing the point Oi you, yes you, Mr ‘I’ve just opened a new club night in Dubai’ Promoter. You might be feeling like Billy ‘big balls’ at the moment, but as much as dance music is a business, house music is a feeling. So, when you book that ultra cool underground DJ that, like, everyone wants to see in your tiny club, you’re kinda missing the point. House music wasn’t built on filling your club with tables and tw@ts, it’s about openness, acceptance and most importantly equality on the dance floor. Just because you can afford a big name, doesn’t mean you should, especially if you need to fill your club with sparklers and bottles to cover costs. You’re then left with the shoes and collars brigade who who are more interested in being seen rather than being part of the scene. Monkey Out...
