We’re hyped for the world’s largest water slide which is coming to Motor City in September, 1000ft of slippery goodness. We’re pumped that the owners of Q43 have bought ex club Tabla and are turning it into an up-market Tecom drinking establishment called Lock Stock and Barrel.

SAY WHAT? STRAIGHT OUTTA

- So the Straight Outta Compton memes quickly became boring, but there were a few excellent examples from the internets…

DANCEFLOOR DICTIONARY

- Club drop A bass drop of a different kind, when you just have to drop a deuce in the club. Thankfully Dubai toilets don’t look like that Trainspotting scene, but excessive bass can hurry up the process.

WE LOVE Analog Room

Running a weekly night is tough. Running a weekly night for nearly 3 years, in a house market as competitive as ours is Herculean. So this issue’s We Love is dedicated to Analog Room, a truly underground night that brings a really eclectic electronic edge to the city’s club scene. Once inside, Q Underground, the club is as minimalist as you get – a bar, black walls and a DJ booth brought down to ground level so it becomes a part of the dancefloor. Add in a booming soundsystem, and you have the raw essentials for a good club night. Musically, Analog Room span disco-fried goodness (the DUST crew collabs with Ben Sun and Rahaan), wonky acid (Detroit pioneer DJ Pierre) and all out techno (Derrick May). But alongside that, they’ve brought out dozens of leftfield dance music stars, like Tin Man, Tobias, Rob Mello and Anthea, names that mean a lot to their loyal crowd. As ever, not everything they touched turned to gold – the dozen or so people at DJ Rolando’s NYE bash will attest to that – but on the whole, the atmosphere and back-to-basics vibe at their parties are as good as anything we’ve seen in the city.

Looking Back

What we did

THE OTHER SIDE FEATURING THE WANTON BISHOPS @ AND LOUNGE, ADDRESS DUBAI MARINA There’s been a lull in quality live music in the last few months, so it was refreshing to see newly launched night The Other Side step up to the plate with ace Beirut blues band, The Wanton Bishops. The Other Side have event history, with one half of the team previously behind the original Electric Days party, and there was the same high energy vibe to the party. The venue was a sell out from 9pm, with opening act Josh Monteath hand delivered one of the best crowds he’ll have played to. He quickly got in the act, getting the crowd to handclap along before giving the stage over to a trimmed down Carl and the Reda Mafia duo who ramped up the atmosphere with their loose-limbed fun(k) throwdown.

A few technical hiccups – and the Bishops late arrival from the airport – held up proceedings for a short while, but the partisan crowd quickly forgot as soon as the 4 piece band started. With howling bass, squalling guitars and tortured blues vocals, they sounded every inch the rock stars they’ve quickly become. At over an hour, they delivered a full set that veered from ploddy blues balads to furious, double-time rock, including inevitable set highlight ‘Sleep With The Lights On’, their breakthrough hit. Friday August 28, line up TBA

Looking Back HOUSE PARTY @ ZERO GRAVITY We always say yes to our friends when they throw a house party, but there’s always the risk the host has invited their mother and you’re the one left to make conversation with her - and let’s face it, your buddy’s hardly got the best taste in music. But while it’s hot outside and the gigs are sparse, Zero Gravity has decided to show wannabe entertainers how it’s done by throwing their own house party every Thursday night.

With nostalgic board games on the tables, there were plenty of activities for everyone (and I’m still as bad at all of them as I remember) and even over-sized Jenga blocks for those brave enough to face the crowd’s jeers, should the stack topple. The food was focused on doing a few things well, rather than lots of things poorly, and the hospitality was fantastic. We’d be amiss not to mention the music of course, but in this case it was at the right volume and the DJ kept things fresh with both old and new tunes. Best of all, there’s no need to feel guilty for slipping out at the end of the night without helping to clean up. UP NEXT: Matt Zaharias

WATERMÄT PLAYS XL

If you’ve been out in the last year, you’ll have heard of French DJ/ producer Watermät. And if you’ve not been out in the last year, what are you doing reading this? His track ‘Bullit’ was a huge smash last year, and was one of the stand out tracks from the Miami Music Conference, and was bigged up by Pete Tong as his Essential Tune. The French DJ is coming to play deep techno records in Dubai, and will be gracing the XL decks on Thursday August 20.

Analog Room’s party Finest Friday returns on Friday August 28 with a big double header of Octave One and Ostgut Ton’s Virginia.

Octave One The American live techno duo are behind one of house music’s greatest moments, the string-heavy, soulful slice of heaven that is ‘Blackwater.’ We caught up with the two Burden brothers to find out more ahead of their Dubai debut…

We've read you have a full analog set up when you play live – are you still adding to your set up, or is it finished? A lot of people say a full analog set up but in actuality it’s a full hardware set up and yes, we’re constantly adding add even taking pieces out of the

Mothership, it just depends on what directly we want it to take flight. And no it’ll never be finished! Octave One are two brothers who tour, and started out as 5 brothers – your Mum and Dad must be very proud of the music in the family! What were your

first musical influences? Yes true, on the touring side of things it’s just us two but the group of writers still make up all five of us from time to time. Our first musical influences vary greatly, it just depends on who you ask and when you ask them. But there’s lot of Soul, RnB, House and even Rock in our musical repertoire as being influential to us. How does the family dynamic work in your music, are you wise enough to step back from any conflicts now? Well the family dynamic helps, it keeps us grounded really on wanting to see each other succeed even beyond our self. And yes, we are that wise now to step back from any conflicts between us as artist now. Did you realise when you made 'Blackwater' what a huge hit it would be? And the music scene is awash with stories of artists not making money from their big records – we hope you saw some cash after selling a million records? When we created ‘Blackwater’ it was just one of many of the fun tracks that we enjoyed creating in our basement studio. It wasn’t until it really started hitting the clubs heavy on rotation that Jeff Mills brought it to our attention what a hit it had become. After it made its way onto over a million compilations we did

happen to see a couple of coins here and there, no complaints. And how does the track fit into your sets now, have you changed it to keep up to date? It fits like a glove, like it should with the rest of the music that we’ve created along the years of producing. We haven’t done anything to it but slowed it down a bit because music was faster when it was initially released. But it’s a classic, why alter a classic! There seems to have been a real renaissance in classic house and techno – have you felt that, are you getting more bookings and interest in recent times? The renaissance is here and it’s now truly felt by not just us but many of our peers as well. We’ve all had conversations about how much we’re all being booked and our booking growing through the roof! It’s really an exciting time for us as a band and the culture as well. America is also in the middle of a huge dance music rush, although largely EDM based. Can it act as a gateway into the good stuff? We don’t think it’ll be a true gateway into other genres of dance music but we’re sure there are some adventurous kids who came in through that funnel and want to know what else is in the pipeline to explore and discover.

Virginia Not only is German born Virginia one of the most in-demand DJs on the techno circuit, she also has an incredible voice and is often found singing live over her sets. A house music disciple since the late 90s, she’s been a part of Germany’s house music fabric thanks to residencies at Sven Vath’s Cocoon and Tobi Neumann’s Flokati. She released her first full length album in 2008 on cult alternative label Rough Trade, touring the electro-pop debut as a live 5 piece outfit. More recently, she’s worked with techno talents like Butch and Steve Bug, while her collaboration with Panorama Bar’s Steffi on her album ‘Yours And Mine’ a career highlight.

Full line up Octave One Virginia Nasrawi Shemroom Tristan Girault Finest Friday Friday August 28, Level 41 Media One Hotel, 5pm-3am. Free from 5-8pm, 8-9pm AED50, 9-10pm 100AED, 10pm3am AED150.

Jones Town

Having released a slew of underground hits on top labels such as Leftroom, Crosstown Rebels and Visionquest, Laura Jones returns to Dubai for an extended 4 hour set for the ever impressive Plus Minus crew. Stu Todd caught up with Laura to find out what has been happening in her world recently… You have been quite the busy bee this year, tell us about your personal highlights? The year started off with a trip to Mexico for Damian Lazarus’ Day Zero which definitely lived up to the hype. Damian is an old friend from my Ibiza worker days in the mid 2000s and gave me my first gig so it was a lovely turn of events to play for Day Zero and then a couple of months later for his legendary Get Lost party in Miami. It was probably my busiest Miami Music Week to date and the Circo Loco party was another highlight. Playing for Circo Loco in Ibiza and Fabric in London again is always a pleasure and both left me with a big smile on my face as ever. In between there’s been lots of hot-footing it around Europe. Sonar’s Leftroom party was another highlight and I went to Egypt for the first time a couple of week’s back, which was a real eye opener. I played an outdoors club called M Rubies with an amazing view over the desert towards the rising sun, which felt like Star Wars, Burning Man and Ibiza all colliding on one dance floor. In between the gigs I’ve also had probably my most prolific period in the studio ever working on music for my own label and

some new labels, which I’ll be able to announce soon. Ibiza has been a bit of a career-defining destination for you, what does the White Isle mean to you? It’s where the penny dropped. I’d been listening to all sorts of electronic music before going to Ibiza but when I went to DC10 the summer of 2005 something clicked inside me and I was a convert to the underground for life. Ibiza is also where I met most of my best friends and where I met my boyfriend a long time ago. The crazy thing is that my rave friends from those days working in Ibiza are people like Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed, Russ Yallop or Mark Jenkyns and it’s really great to see everyone doing so well in their own individual ways. So I guess you could probably call Ibiza our rave boot camp. You’re part of the all conquering Circoloco family and have been for a while now, what is your earliest memory of these infamous parties and how does it measure up to what Ibiza is today? I remember being on the terrace and watching Tania Vulcano and Clive Henry in particular and just getting the first big jolt of inspiration to be a DJ. It was such an amazing melting pot of people and it

never compromised musically whereas apart from maybe Cocoon, at the time, all of the parties on the island felt obliged to have a commercial element to their musical programming. These days there is a lot more underground music on the island. Perhaps, not as much from the more forward-thinking sides of dance music as we would like. But my biggest worry is there are not enough underground people. The price of tickets and drinks is forcing a lot of UK clubbers to holiday in places like Croatia instead. There is a distinct lack of German people going preferring to holiday in Berlin instead because of the lack of cheap flights to the island. Ibiza has always been defined by its underground. Before the ravers there were the hippies before the hippies there were the bohemian poets and artists. The powers that be need to realise that without its underground subculture there is no Ibiza. On a serious note, your eye condition has been much documented, how do you think this will affect your ability to perform/produce and has your increased focus forced you to produce an album? To give you a rough idea my visual field is roughly around 30% of what it was. It’s basically a bit like looking

through a moving cheese grater but it’s very complex to describe to someone who doesn’t have the condition. My visual acuity is still relatively OK at the moment but my visual field is covered in holes mostly in the centre which cause blind spots. What I can see on a minute to minute basis is greatly affected by the balance of light and dark and I really struggle to see any sort of detail or read text unless on a backlit screen. If I meet people I usually can make out an outline of the person but not see the detail on their face to recognise who they are unless the lighting conditions are at optimum, it’s a constant balancing act and a case of having to adapt as they deteriorate. For DJing, I find it difficult to visually read the crowd, I also can’t read the label text on a vinyl so I’m mostly using CDJs as the backlit screen makes things a lot easier. In the studio I am completely unable to see the gridlines or detail of my DAW so I’m having to use an engineer now to help with the arrangement and mixdown, I still write everything myself. I use a sampler to write drums and a sequencer to write some of my hooks, which has opened lots of doors and while I might not be able to rely on my eyes, my hearing and other senses are becoming a lot more powerful. I can hear

things in my mixes that my engineer often can’t. You’re headed over to Dubai shortly, what's your take on the region’s scene and what can we expect when you take control for Plus Minus? It seems to be growing from strength to strength with every visit. The bigger clubs seem to be keeping on the more glamorous tip but it’s good to see a growth in the smaller more underground parties as well as an influx and rise in the number of decent names heading there. People in Dubai also seem to work hard and play hard which is always a good combination for a great party.

Plus Minus feat. Laura Jones, Friday August 21, Level 41, Media One Hotel, 5pm-3am, free entry before 9pm, Dhs120 after.

With Are You Experienced, the Jimi Hendrix tribute act coming to The Music Room on Friday August 21, we take a look back at the guitar wizard’s incredible career… Hendrix got into police trouble for car crime, and chose a 2 year stint in the army over jail. He served in the Screaming Eagles as a trainee paratrooper, but was discharged 26 jumps later after breaking his ankle. Not only was Hendrix renowned for playing the guitar with his teeth and behind his back, Jimi used a right handed guitar strung upside down, which meant the bridge’s pick up was reversed, making the lower strings more resonant and producing a unique sound. His father didn’t approve of his left handedness, however, and thought it was the devil’s work. Jimi arrived in Britain at the end of the summer in 1966, eager to meet his British idols. He arrived at Heathrow at 9am carrying a small bag, his guitar, pink plastic hair curlers and a jar of Valderma cream for his acne. His father bought his first guitar for the princely sum of $5. Later Jimi Hendrix guitars, including a Fender Stratocaster, were auctioned for a record $168,000. Hendrix could not read or write music, and had to record his musical ideas on tape, or write them out on available scraps of paper. “Purple Haze” was actually the devil’s music. Part of the guitar riff uses a tritone or flattened fifth interval, and during the Spanish Inquisition was known as the Diablo in Musica (the Devil in Music). Are You Experienced, The Jimi Hendrix Tribute, Friday August 21, 8pm, Dhs100.

HOW TO SURVIVE THE HOP FEST

12:00 PM

4:00 PM

8:00 PM

12:00 AM

With almost a decade of Hop Fest experience under our slowly expanding beer belly belt, we consider ourselves experts on how to approach the 72 hour celebration of all things ale… • Go early. That might sound counterintuitive considering the perils of all day/night drinking, but there is method to our madness. Get there early and you’re guaranteed not to queue and suffer 3rd degree burns in the mid-afternoon August heat. • Plus, you’ll get to cherry (beer) pick from the weird and wonderful ales on offer before they sell out. • Beware the weird and wonderful ales, however – they often contain more alcohol than an Oliver Reed autopsy. One is great, two is fine, but three and you’re on a one way trip to mumbleville, with a stop at the porcelain potty on the way. • This is totally something your mum would have said, but stay hydrated. I know, right – Infusion in jump-the-shark shocker. But seriously, a cheeky water – or Fosters, they’re pretty much the same thing – will make sure you keep your energy levels up and keep you upright for longer. Which is important so you can play some pub sports like… Hop Fest bingo. Overhear any of these phrases and award yourself one point: “Anyone fancy a kebab?” “I am the oooooooooooone and only” “Try the frozen beer” “My alcohol tolerance is really high after living in Dubai” “SHOTS!” “After party at Rock Bottom” “I only smoke when I’m drunk”

Album Reviews

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS – BORN IN THE ECHOES Electronic | thechemicalbrothers.com



They’ve been there, done that and raved all night in the smiley faced t-shirt. So, just what excites Chemical Brothers – a British dance music institution – on their 8th album? Born in the Echoes is almost an anti EDM album – there’s one pop moment, the Q Tip adorned ‘Go,’ but the rest of the album is insistent, leftfield, vintage sounding electronica. Which is a shame if you were expecting another ‘Block Rockin’ Beats’ or ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl,’ but stick on the banging musical techno of ‘Reflexion’ and you’ll soon forgive them. Or the peak dancefloor filler ‘Just Bang,’ an industrial bass and beats workout that takes no prisoners. There are a few trademark Chemical Brothers sonic signatures – ‘I’ll See You There’ is essentially another breaks homage to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ and ‘Sometimes I Feel So Deserted’ channels their classic ‘Get High’ bee-in-a-bottle bass sound. But Born In The Echoes is the sound of Tom and Ed making funky, wonky, challenging and rewarding music to remind the world that there’s more to dance music than the drop.

POSITRONIC COLLECTIVE

Progressive House | jaytechmusic.com



Positronic Digital is the new label of Australian producer Jaytech, a veteran of the progressive house and trance scene, who got his start well before the commercialisation (and bastardisation) of the genre. Known for his distinctive groovy and melodic sound, Positronic Collective is as you might expect, a two-CD compilation of tracks from his imprint, featuring up-and-coming producers rather than the established names. Disc one is a club-focused affair, but it’s not just for the dancefloor - Jaytech’s ‘Basilisk’ sets a groovy scene nicely, and the two tracks by Wayfinder really grabbed our attention with their production quality. French prodigy Matt Fax’s ‘Tumble’ is a mind-warping affair, and the driving bass-line of Reddfield’s ‘Ascension’ is a great example of how to get energy into a track without relying on over-compressed buildups and drops. Disc two brings the tempo down a little, but the tunes are just as good - ‘On You Near You’ by Micah is a catchy hypnotic number, and Engine of Sound - Infinity’s piano line is wonderfully atmospheric, and the closing track ‘Above The Sun’ by Frosun is a great way to close out proceedings. It’s a testament to the fact that there’s plenty of good music out there that isn’t just horrific ‘EDM’ bangers - you just have to look a little harder than the Top 10. Matt Zaharias

The UAE’s hip hop scene has been a poorer place since the Dubai based trio of Swerte, Perfect Storm and Kaz Money took a break from music making. Now back with a storming new single ‘Move On,’ we caught up with Kaz to talk Bruce Jenner, dislocated shoulders and why they’ve been missed so much…

You were one of our favourite acts in the Middle East (and still are now you're back), and you had a lot of momentum behind you – what made you stop 5 years ago? We were a little burnt out from the constant frustrations of a struggling band and felt like we had maxed out our potential locally by performing in almost all the major venues and events we could find. Plus we wanted to give the kids a chance to shine a little too. And what was the reason for getting back together?

It just felt like it was the right time for The Recipe to come back. We have been working on music again for nearly two years without releasing anything so our sound developed and with the amount of cr*p out there at the moment I think our music will provide people with a nice break. It takes balls to put yourself out there like this, just ask Bruce Jenner. Comebacks can be pretty hard, when you find people have moved on, taken your place – but you've had a lot of support coming

WHAT’S COOKING? THE RECIPE RETURN!

back, that must have felt pretty special? It's great to see that we have been missed and we appreciate all the love we’ve got so far. I think people appreciated our sound, work ethic and our non cliched approach to hip hop, especially when compared to other artists regionally so we hold a special place in their hearts. Did you ever consider moving abroad to further your music horizons? Or can you do that in Dubai/ The UAE? We are always looking to

grow and expand so we would never rule out moving if the opportunity comes up but Dubai will always be home for us. Can we do it in Dubai? That's debatable but we'll try our best and see how far we can get. You've got more planned than just the excellent comeback single, what else is coming? We have a ton of music ready to go but timing is everything. This year people can look forward to a few official singles along with music videos, a plethora of online releases,

and a free mixtape titled "Throwback to The Future" where we re-interpret many of our favorite old school tracks with our own twist as a dedication to the old school artists that paved the way. Your last gig must have been with Afrika Bambaataa, didn't someone fall off stage and break their leg or something? Interesting show. We were performing with a live band that night and during the performance, I managed to dislocate my shoulder live on stage! I've got a chronic shoulder issues. The only way I can reset my shoulder is to lean against the floor, so my genius mind decided to launch myself from the side of the stage away from the view of the crowd and attempt to reset it by slamming down on the ground. Naturally nobody in the band knew what was happening until P Storm noticed that I was missing. The band kept playing while Swerte and P rushed off stage to find me shaking on the ground like

a fish out of water trying to pop my shoulder back in. Took about 5 minutes to get it done. We all got back on stage and had to cut the show short but managed to get one more track in that night and began to drink away the pain. And how has the hip hop scene changed since you've been gone? Regionally it seems to have been reset with only a few acts consistently delivering content and performing. A lot of younger acts took our blueprints and tried to do their own thing which is kind of dope but overall, not much has changed. We always took pride in creating opportunities for ourselves when they said we couldn't do it so hopefully, us coming back will show everyone that we haven't missed a step since we left. Now you're back, are you getting ready for world domination? Yup, just like Pinky and The Brain.

SLEEPY

The Abu Dhabi rapper on why he digs Kendrick Lamar, crunk and why he’s a ‘narcoleptic narcissist

My first musical influence was… I was born and raised in the south of America, my first influence was UGK and Three 6 Mafia, I remember riding with my big brother while he played them in his old school Lincoln. The last pop star I liked was… Kendrick Lamar because his music is more of an audio movie, the way he paints a picture with his word you can visualize everything he says. My sound is best described as… Deep vocals, crunk music, and straight to the point. The best advice I received was… From my mentor LBO Keyz. He told me when you record you need to have a conversation with your listeners so they feel what I say. My musical guilty pleasure is… I love orchestras. I remember being in Italy and going to a show and they played ‘November Rain’ by Guns’n’Roses, after that I was hooked. But don’t tell anybody! The best band in the world… Is Outkast. They put the south on the map with rap, true pioneers of music, I still listen to all of their CDs. My best claim to fame… Was going to a local store and most of the people who worked there told me they liked my music. My motto is... “Don’t sleep on ya boy Sleepy.” My best gig was… At club Etoiles at the Emirates Palace, it was a crazy night. When I performed most of the people knew the song I was rapping plus I was doing the show with my official DJ, DJ Slim from Paris. Best lyrics of all time: ‘I’m the narcoleptic narcissist, flow sicker than arsenic, when I’m in the booth I’m an arsonist.’ twitter.com/sleepy334

DJ Heroes #6 DJ Bliss Next up in our series is DJ Bliss, one of the UAE’s longest standing radio and club DJs, who’s now branched out into making his own music

First club you played in Dubai?

Henry J Beans at The Capitol Hotel, where every steak fan makes a bee-line before.

First track you played?

One of the most famous boy bands, Backstreet Boys ‘Everybody.’

Best change in the city’s club scene?

Healthy competition leads to innovation and with this, there are more places to see and experience what every single venue has to offer, more themed nights and different music genres to listen to and for people to enjoy.

Worst change in the city’s club scene?

There are too many promoters around town. Best club still running from when you started (or best you’ve played if it’s since closed)? - People By Crystal Dubai by the Raffles.

Key to longevity as a DJ is…

For me, the key to longevity in this industry is changing with the times and adapting with it, yet remaining true to yourself. Continuously re-invent yourself and always come up with fresh new ideas.

The best way to get gigs is… Ask for one. Unsung Dubai hero? Mr Shef Codes. Dubai DJ you’d most like to go back to back with? DJ Cowboy. Upcoming gigs? I’m on a US Tour 2015 this summer hitting Palms LV, Atlantic City, and Miami.

ON THE RECORD

Techfui We caught up with Salah Sadeq and Ronin behind new vinyl only label, Techfui. Started in Bahrain, now based in Amsterdam, and with very strong ties to Dubai and Beirut, their first EP is out now and has already got musical thumbs up from Francois K and Frank Lorber

NEED TO KNOW

RUNNING SINCE: The brand is a definition of my style and sound and the events were established around 1999 in Bahrain. The label finally came together in 2014 after a couple of years of thought and development with my good friend Ronald (Ronin). NUMBER OF RELEASES: Our first release is out now on vinyl. GENRES COVERED: To be honest, we’ll be genre free as much as possible. Our A&R policy is if it’s unique, fresh, organic, has a heart in it and is trend free, we will sign it. The most basic breakdown we can give you is House, Techno and Electronic. MAIN ARTISTS: Pawas who is our artist for the first EP. We also have some great stuff ready to go from Nohijo, Lee Roz, Safe, Bacho & Cobert from Tbilisi Georgia, and some more we can’t mention at the moment. WEBSITE: www.techfui.nl

The best thing about running your own label is… It’s been really nice to build and bring a family of friends and talent together and see the product of the collaborations, remixes and performances developing. It is also good to be involved with like-minded people and sharing the same vision and ethos. The worst thing is… It is a saturated market and even as a vinyl first label, the recent resurgence has really caused some difficulties and delays. Our biggest seller is… Salah: We shall see soon, although based on the 5 releases we have ready to roll out starting this June (not to be biased to any artist in the family) I think EP 1 and EP 3 are going to be the big ones. Ronald: I directly fell in love with EP 4 from our Tbilisi friends, and I also have a feeling it is going to be a big one. We’re already playing it in our sets. We’ve had support from… We’ve just gotten feedback from our early promo rounds of the first release and very proud to say Francois K, Frank Lorber, Robag Wruhme, Sasse, Patrice Baumel and Paul Loraine have come back with great responses. What does your label sound like? Our sound is heartfelt from the soul, organic, fresh, it gets under the skin with a heart to it. How do you make yourself stand out? By being true to the brand, the artist and ourselves and staying away from fads. You should keep an eye out for… Every release to be honest. There are some great collaborations and some nice surprises with every release being a collectable. How does a smash hit happen? Part talent, part timing, part marketing, part support from the right people and network. Part luck? How involved are you with UAE/Middle East producers, how can people get in touch with you? We are really focused on bringing together artist from different

cultures, regions and experiences to work together in various efforts for each release. We are already working with some talent in Amsterdam, Berlin, Beirut, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, India, Tbilisi, Frankfurt, Toronto and Australia so there are actually no boundaries but a lot of bringing people together. How hard is it to make money as a record label? At a certain point in the early stages of developing a label you have to make a decision whether you’re doing it to make money or to get exposure for your artists or a personal outlet or just a hobby. We are in it to bring a family of friends and fresh talent together and build a strong relationship around them. We have done our math, touch wood let’s see how it goes. And what’s next for your label? Good question. We have been so caught up with this, we lifted our heads from all the buzz and realised we are ready with 5 releases which takes us into the next year. Some of the feedback on what we are doing has been great and the support from many established people in the industry has been amazing. We’re getting ready for our release events and showcases collaborations in various cities while we see the releases rollout. facebook.com/techfui soundcloud.com/techfui

DJ Booth: Chris Delaney

We’re back in Abu Dhabi, this time catching up with popular local DJ Chris Delaney who tells us about his basketball and bin man skills‌

One thing you might not know about me is... I used to represent Manchester Giants Under 18s in Basketball. My worst ever job was… Waste Paper technician, which is basically a Bin Man, haha! My favourite ever record is... ‘Alright,’ Red Carpet. DJing is much like... Well in my eyes it’s bringing people together no matter what style of music, people that enjoy music will come together as one. Abu Dhabi clubbing scene is... OK, not the best. It’s got an OK scene, but people just like Radio 1 music. I’m really proud of... My life. I was told I was never going to do well in life, and I’ve proved many people wrong. What track could you drop in every set? K Klass, ‘Let Me Show You.’ I can’t live without... My girlfriend, as she supports me in everything I do. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... DJing alongside legends of house music like K Klass, Brandon Block and Jon Fitz. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... A hard one due to my love of all kinds of music, but I’d say the 90s. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Carl Cox. I’m not a politician but… Master of my work and I love it. mixcloud.com/djchrisdelaney/

Dancefloor Warriors Karam Toubba For too long, the focus has been on the club, the music, the DJ. What about the clubber, who goes a long way to making the atmosphere, who gets the dancefloor started and is the last (wo) man standing, hoarsely shouting ‘One more tune’ as the lights go out. So, we’ve started a new series focusing on the dancefloor warriors in this city, who live a nocturnal life and keep our floors alive. First up is the long haired Wookie warrior, Karam Toubba… just don’t try and stand infront of him at gigs! Tough question, but to date what's the best dancefloor you've ever been on for atmosphere? Bassworx's recent night with North Base & Djinn at Casa Latina. It’s dirty, gritty and not for pretty people. Which local DJs get you on the floor every time? Mach4, Aidan Karami, Somalie, Smoking Groove and bloody Raxon when he's around (stop travelling!) And international? Any international DJ. I actually pay attention to what they play and be in sync with them. What's a big no-no for you on the dancefloor? There is where I’m just going to destroy the clubbing scene in Dubai. I understand from a business perspective it’s good money. However the reality is,

tables take lots of space and it’s nothing more than an area where you sit, drink, be lazy, shake your head and spend hours on the phone telling your friends how much "fun" you're having. It’s pathetic. Ladies, you're prettier if you're dancing like crazy and actually having a good time, instead of standing in the middle of the dance floor, while I’m swinging my legs and arms left and right and then complain why I touched your side boob. You're at a dance event to dance. If you are just there to look pretty, please feel free to contact a modelling agency and they could hook you up on a runway. People, I can't stress enough the importance of giving yourself and others personal space. Being cramped at an event is absolutely

horrible. You can't dance, you're rubbed by a hundred sweaty people you don't know all the time and in the end, nobody has fun. I have gone through the crap where people actually and purposely try to stand in front of me while I’m trying to support an international or local DJ by showing him/her my BASSFACE. In my case, I politely ask them to move and stand somewhere else. Some start acting tough and give me the "How dare you" tone and I have to stop being polite and ask them to move. Some guys actually give me the puppy face and respond by "Can I please be at the front?" NO, OF COURSE YOU CANT!!! GET BACK HOMIE!!!!! Best dancefloor in town? Casa Latina. Longest time you've spent on a dancefloor? From 11 PM to 3 AM continuously. No breaks. Trip Land, Fairmont Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road. Come watch and learn! Funniest/oddest thing you've seen on a dance floor? A girl in the middle of the dance floor screaming on the phone where she is... Best music to lose yourself to on a dance floor? Drum and bass. Music that should never be heard on the dance floor? David Guetta.

Looking Closer

Weird News... 999 TO THE RESCUE

One of the greatest reliefs in life is knowing that the good guys are just a call away when things go wrong. But even the British police were unable to do much with these 999 complaints. One man recently complained that a seagull had “tried to rip a sandwich out of his hand” and then asking officers to check the CCTV pictures to apprehend the criminal. Staying in the animal world, another caller rang to tell them he’d ‘literally just escaped from a badger.’

FACE OFF

There’s shallow, and then there’s divorcing your wife the first time you see her without make up. The morning after his wedding in Algeria, the man was shocked to see his wife’s natural face, and initially thought it was a different woman. The man is now reportedly suing her for fraud and $20,000 in damages for ‘psychological suffering’.

David Guetta to release EDM nursery rhymes album

Fresh from his latest club banger, the metaphysical meditation on happiness ‘(If You’re Happy And You Know It,) Clap Your Hands,’ musical genius and noted horse lover David Guetta has released plans for a full album of EDM nursery rhymes.

‘I’ve done so much in my career, and really changed the face of dance music – I’ve literally got more money than

I know what to do with. So I thought, as dance music is getting a younger and younger crowd, why don’t I target the Nappy Generation and get them hooked on my music like it’s sugary crack,’ he said with a maniacal laugh. Next up is in the series is ‘Crunky Dumpty,’ ‘I’m A Little Tosspot’ while ‘Jack And Jills’ is already an underground dance music anthem.

Promoters promising to ‘Watch this space’ exposed as frauds as nothing happens to said space. *These stories are not true, this is not a real newspaper. This is a parody/fiction/satire/joke. The Spin is not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Cool Test AUDIO TONIC VS NIGHT VIBES

In the blue corner, we have Rod Lee Winters representing audio tonic, and in the red corner, we have house newcomer Night Vibes, with Pro-Moe. The two nights go head to head on August 28, but ahead of that, the two DJ stars battle it out in Infusion for bragging rights…

Who's the coolest person in your phone book? ROD: My mate Mikkael who makes real snow.

PRO: Laundry guy. We have the best conversation every time he comes over. He doesn’t speak English (or Arabic).

What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep? ROD: 3 days, many bottles of tequila and countless um, friends.

PRO: Half a day. Sleep is cool!

Describe your best bass face: ROD: Place cartoon vacuum on centre of face, turn on.

PRO: I smile... that’s all I got.

Coolest word in the world? ROD: Iguana. Go on, say it.

PRO: Lovely - can be placed anywhere in a sentence.

Coolest band in the world? ROD: Dave Grohl recently broke his leg mid concert only to return in a wheel chair to finish the show while a cast was being fitted, so I have to go with Foo Fighters.

Coolest track ever made? ROD: Impossible to answer seriously. I’ll go with ‘Ice Ice Baby’.

PRO: Delerium.

Your best dance move is… ROD: The chin stroke.

PRO: I’ve been known to do a little “twist again like we did last summer.”

What’s your best claim to fame? ROD: Warming up for Session Victim at Audio Tonic was one for sure.

PRO: I made eye contact with Robert De Niro.

It’s not big and clever but… ROD: It does have a money back guarantee.

PRO: It’s all mine! All mine, my precious.

What’s your answer to everything? ROD: Yep, for sure.

PRO: ‘Of Course!’ Then walk away.

What’s the best insult you could give each other? ROD: Roses are red, violets are blue, admit it, you play Bieber on the ones and twos.

PRO: Why can’t you be more like me?

THE VERDICT: The win goes to Rod Lee Winters and audio tonic, we can’t wait to see your cartoon bass-face in action on August 28 at 360. Audio tonic vs Night Vibes, 360, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Friday August 28, 4pm-3am, free entry all night, 5-8pm happy hour.

Superstar promoters We know, we know – promoting an event is hard. You have to hire the hookers (and hookahs), prime the Superman music every time someone buys a bottle and make sure there are enough sparklers so your club can be seen from space. Which is why flyer artwork is so important. It’s a virtual handshake for your night, it’s the first contact, it’s the eye contact across the bar. And fine, sex sells – use a hot Photoshopped girl (or boy) on the cover, and maybe even spray them suggestively with Champagne like it’s a Pornhub advert. Lowest common demoninator clubbing is nothing new to Dubai. But if you put a picture of Beyonce or Daft Punk (these are real examples, by the way) on your flyer, you’d best be bringing their talented ass to town. But wait, let me guess – your budget didn’t extend beyond ripping their image from Google and then paying your resident DJ to drop dubious bootlegs and nasty EDM mashups from start to finish. Am I right? Am I right? Sometimes I hate being so right, when it’s so wrong. Monkey Out...

The Angry Monkeys’ views are his own, and don’t necessarily reflect the views of Infusion Magazine.
