What we did
SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL BRAAI DAY @ EMIRATES GOLF COURSE We were expecting around 300 people to our Braai Day (that’s BBQ, to non South Africans) but eventually welcomed over 1300 people on the day to our celebration of meat and more. The Braais were all full come the afternoon, with the marinated meat giving off incredible smells, while the activities – including a bucking bronco, petting zoo and a busy bar – kept the party going until popular SA band Die Heuwels Fantasties came on after dark and showed why they’re such a hot property back home.

ONE BIG VIBES FEAT. KENNY DOPE @ JEBEL ALI This October, one half of Soulful/Latin House legends MAW aka Mr Kenny Dope landed back in Dubai to the cheer of the city’s house heads. Not only that, but the venue was Jebel Ali Shooting Club, as out of the box as it’s possible to get! On arrival we walked past a tank, sniper hideouts, and the always excellent Night Vibes décor to the beat of the epic sound system they’d constructed for the night. Free spirited people roamed throughout and that classic MAW bump and support from Purple Disco Machine and Chopstick and Johnjon to ensure a great night was had by all. Well done to the Night Vibes team for taking a risk with the venue, one of Dubai’s more unique raving spots and a very cool crowd. GarethIsOnIt UP NEXT: 6 Nov: Night Vibes feat. HOUSE OF AFRIKA @ DEK ON 8
CM
They’ve been happening weekly for a few years now, but there’s nothing tired about House of Afrika’s Friday night parties at The Dek on 8 in Media City. Residents Charl Chaka and Just Lance were on DJ duty for the night and it’s a testament to the following the night has that they’re consistently pulling in the crowds with no gimmicks.
MY
The Afro beats work well with the poolside setting and the relaxed nature of the venue, and it’s always nice to have a dance floor that isn’t cluttered with tables. The on-point DJs kept the large crowd entertained, and as a bonus, the crew of the Star Trek movie that had just finished shooting decided to drop in on. We even spotted director Justin Lin cutting a few shapes on the dance floor (or maybe he’d just left his drink on the other side). Celebrity or no celebrities though, we’d highly recommend you drop into the House of Afrika one Friday night, as it’s only going to get better as the season goes on. Local News SVEN VATH AND SOLOMUN CONFIRMED FOR F1
It’s not just Blur and Florence and the Machine that will be pulling in the crowds at the F1 this year, as Sven Väth (pictured) and Solomun have been confirmed for DJ sets on Yas Island. Thanks to the Crystal Group and Iron Cult bookings, Solomun plays the Yas Rotana Ball Room open until 4am on Friday November 27, while the Cocoon head honcho closes proceedings on the Sunday night at the same venue. Tickets are AED600 for passes for both events, and table packages for the event start from AED8000.
IN THE BOOKA SHADE
A by-word for quality in the dance music industry, Booka Shade are re-uniting their love affair with the UAE when they return to play at XL on Thursday November 5. The German duo – Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier – have released 5 studio albums, and countless hit singles including ‘Body Language.’ But it’s their work alongside M.A.N.D.Y and DJ T as part of the Get Physical label that the duo are probably best known, as it’s become one of the most celebrated dance music labels in the world. Tickets are AED120 in advance from Platinumlist.ae, and AED150 on the door.
Looking Forward MARCO CAROLA PLAYS PROVOCATEUR
Ibiza techno legend Marco Carola returns to the UAE to play at Provocateur on Thursday October 29.The Music: On founder and resident has again been the biggest draw in Ibiza this year with his brand of bouncy tech house, and will be playing the very intimate Four Seasons club at the end of the month as the venue returns to their big booking policy from their opening season.
Looking Forward PUROBEACH TO LAUNCH THIS DECEMBER
Come this December, there’ll be a new beach club in town which is looking to rival Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE and Eden Beach Club. Purobeach, located at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort, offers a relaxing escape during the day, with pool and beach parties at night. With 4 outdoor bars, 2 spas, a restaurant, and over 200 sunbeds and cabanas, the space can hold up to 4,000 people and can get a late license until 3am for special events.
THE FRIDGE GOES ELECTRIC The Fridge can always be relied upon to bring you something different from their Concert series, and their October 26 event is just that – a live, on-thefly collaboration between electro specialists Aaron Kim and Fidgit, with Dubai Music Week stars Muhaisnah Four dropping a live set afterwards. Tickets are AED50, with Under 18s free, and doors open from 6pm. thefridgedubai.com
Looking Forward SHIBUYA TURN 1!
It’s been an excellent opening year for the Shibuya team, as they’ve welcomed big underground talents like Ralph Lawson, Jimpster, Detlef and DJ T to their pure house party. And fittingly, they’re celebrating their 1st birthday at their new Square home on Thursday October 29 with a residents and locals special, with Smokingroove, Miss PM, Drinky, Somalie, Tobie Allen and Bahrain DJ Sami Dee on deck duty. Doors open at 10pm, free entry for ladies before midnight and AED100 after.
Looking Forward JAZZY JEFF GETS HIS HALLOWEEN ON Fresh from celebrating their 20th birthday – or maybe that’s not so fresh, especially the next morning – Barasti are inviting down their annual Halloween resident Jazzy Jeff on Saturday October 31. The Fresh Prince collaborator is one of our favourite DJs, happy to mix up rock, hip hop, funk, soul, disco and electro into a proper party starting set. As ever, it’s free entry at Barasti, get down early to secure your dancing spot!
SOMETHING BIG RETURN WITH CHIMPO
Drum and Bass night Something Big returns to the high seas on Thursday November 5 with Manchester DJ Chimpo headlining. The 5 hour party takes place on a super yacht with its own temperature controlled pool, with Chimpo dropping a set that spans Grime, Drum and Bass, Garage, Dancehall and Hip Hop. Entry is AED350 including open bar and the party leaves from Pier 7, Dubai Marina. Email somethingbigdubai@gmail.com for more info.
10 reasons we love
360
360 celebrates its 10th birthday this November with a monster line up. Dozens of clubs have come and gone in that time, but the stunning venue – and its cult Friday night party, audio tonic – have grown and grown and become a by-word for quality clubbing in the region. Here are 10 reasons why we love the venue and nights so much…
1
They bring out box-fresh talent before anyone else. Like already huge and about to be even bigger DJ Josh Butler. We chatted to their November 6 10th Birthday headliner, Noir signing and Pete Tong favourite to ask about hard house and being experimental • A lot of producers find it easier to stick with one style, but you’re quite experimental and adventurous… Sometimes I go in to the studio without and idea and just jam.
My mood will determine what comes out, whether that be house, techno or experimental electronica stuff. For me, this is the best part of making music, those moments of expression that can’t be planned. • We also read that you come from a hard house background – tops off Sundissential style raving hard house? Yeah, hard house was like my gate way drug in to dance music. I was younger, had loads of energy and parties for days on
end. It was the perfect music to release my energy and it has definitely influenced my music to a certain extent! • You’re playing an open air bar in the middle of the Persian Gulf – a pretty unique location. Where else has stood out for you on your travels? Sounds wicked! Johannesburg was a stand out for me. I played a festival in the valley of two mountains while the sun was setting. Beautiful location. • And what advice have you been given from Djs on the way up? The best advice is... stick to what you love, don’t cut corners and if you are really passionate about music, you can make something of it.
2
Alongside French House/IndieDance night We Are Your Friends, they’re bringing out DJ Falcon, a vital part of the Daft Punk family, to play on Friday November 20. Alongside Thomas Bangalter from Daft Punk, he created early 2000s anthems like ‘So Much Love To Give’ and ‘Together’, and collaborated on ‘Contact’ from the last Daft Punk album.
3
They were one of the first venues to get Funktion 1 in the city, and help make sure that good quality sound was a pre-requisite for clubbing in the region, not just a bonus.
4
They’ve been going for 10 years. The list of clubs that have closed in that period is staggering (and would fill Infusion several times over), and yet through a recession, intense competition and the helter skelter world of nightlife, they’ve prospered and thrived.
5
Seriously, cocktails at sunset on a Friday afternoon with the Burj to your left and the sun dipping into the Persian Gulf and some of the city’s best DJs on deck duty. This is what Dubai dreams are made of.
6
Their November line up to celebrate their 10th birthday is fierce. Their Thursday night promoters are bringing down some hot house properties: Sunstroke return with funky house legend Grant Nelson on November 5, Cuts Above host French house champions Art of Tones on November 12, the Warehouse crew have Hot Creations new boy Jey Kurmis on November 19, and the Night Vibes team wrap up the month with one Scarlett Etienne, a big favourite in the city.
7
Point 5 again. Yup, cocktails at sunset, and Instragram-ing the crap out of your smug view. Oh, and the buggy ride on the way there past the Marina and the super yachts is so Dubai it hurts.
8 9
A club is only as good as their residents, and over the 10 years they’ve called on expert DJs like Da Sendri, Tristan Bain, Marco Loco and most recently Jack Woodcock to deliver the goods every night of the week. The weekend nights might get the queues down the pier, but the resident DJs set the musical bar for everyone else to follow. Following on, the audio tonic residents are a crack team of DJs, and ar responsible for the force of nature that is Raxon. A young, unbearded fanatic who religiously hung around the DJ booth as a fan, he moved into production and DJing and became an integral part of audio tonic and their sister record label, signing to big time labels like Noir in the process. And fittingly, he returns to play on November 13.
10
Leading the musical charge is Mr Mr, Mike Bufton, a true legend of the Dubai scene. An award-winning DJ, and one that’s championed high quality dance music for a decade in the city, he’s kept 360 on course through musical fads, the club’s 2nd dancefloor and some truly intense competition.

There aren’t enough pages in the magazine for why I love Analog Room! Shadi Megallaa
3 years, more than 100 parties and thousands of clubbers – underground night Analog Room celebrate their 3rd birthday this November with a suitably eclectic electronic line up, including techno don Juan Atkins. Over the next 3 pages, we preview the 2 nights and also get testimonials from the DJs and fans as to what makes the night so special…
It’s all about the music and only the music.
Analog Room are the pioneers of freedom of music expression here in Dubai.

RED BULL MUSIC ACADEMY FEAT. JUAN ATKINS, THURSDAY NOVEMBER 5 Analog Room have teamed up with the on-point Red Bull Music Academy to bring over techno Godfather Juan Atkins to play their hallowed DJ booth. Now into his 35th year of music making, Atkins was one of the original dance music dons in Detroit in the mid-80s, creating the techno template alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, otherwise known as the Belleville Three. His first release came out in 1982, but it was his ‘Techno City’ release in 1984 that really opened up his sound to mass appeal. He then began recording as Model 500 and Infiniti, two names that still resonate in the dance music community, and went on to influence countless producers and DJs over the next four decades. An innovator and creator, it’s no overstatement to say he’s one of the most important and revered figures in the techno world. Expect a masterclass from one of the best in the business. Red Bull Music Academy presents 3 Years of Analog Room with Juan Atkins, Q Underground, Holiday Inn Al Barsha, Thursday, November 5th, Support from Shemroon, Siamak Amidi. AED100 before midnight, AED120 after midnight. Tickets Platinumlist.net
Analog Room and the people behind it care about sound and artistic integrity, and it shows. The bookings are on point, the staff friendly and welcoming, basically - “just good people, dancing to good techno music.” Danilo Venegas
There is no elevated DJ booth. The artists are on the same level as the crowd in every aspect. The sound system and visual settings are the best in the city. Every member of staff (including the bouncers) are professional yet friendly and social. In the past 3 years I’ve made friends on the Analog Room dancefloor who since then have become part of my family and everyday life. Somalie Ahmed Garoon
AFTER ANNIVERSARY PARTY FEAT. EFDEMIN, THURSDAY NOVEMBER 12 The final part of the birthday is Analog Room back at their forwardthinking best as they’ve booked Dial Records star Efdemin. A Berlin resident, the Detroit techno inspired DJ is known for his pulsating house and techno sets, as well as his varied musical output which has seen him remix dark pop legends Depeche Mode. Support on the night comes from international star in his own right, Siamak Amidi, as they close out the extended birthday celebrations in style. Analog Room feat. Efdemin, Q Underground, Holiday Inn Al Barsha, Thursday, November 12th, tickets AED100.
The love the organizers put into it week in, week out is felt . And the fact that money making isn’t the initial purpose, it’s “education” as they’ve said over and over again. Analog Room has most definitely introduced real club culture that Dubai has lacked for years. Youssef Nasser
Back to the 80s! When we heard that party starters Krafty Kuts & A Skillz were putting on an 80s night for their monthly residency at Zero Gravity, we decided to put their knowledge to the test… WHICH MOURNFUL INDIE STAR WAS ONCE A MEMBER OF SIOUXIE AND THE BANSHEES? Krafty Kuts: Sid Vicious. A Skillz: No idea. 1 point to Krafty. Sid Vicious and The Cure’s Robert Smith are both correct answers. Duran Duran get their name from what film? Krafty Kuts: This is really
difficult… I didn’t know they got there name from a film! A Skillz: No idea. Nil points. The name comes from the character Dr Durand Durand in the 1968 cult film Barbarella. Yello’s member Dieter Meier was a) a millionaire b) professional gambler c) member of the Swiss national golf team d) all of the above? Krafty Kuts: Well I remember
him especially for the track in Ferris Bueller – so I reckon all the above! A Skillz: Professional Gambler? (total guess). 1 point Krafty. Amazingly, he’s all of them. Oh yeah. Who played guitar on Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It? Krafty Kuts: Nile Rogers. A Skillz: Eddie Van Halen. Ok now we’re in my realm of 80s knowledge. 1 point A Skillz. Who originally recorded hip hop anthem The Message? Krafty Kuts: Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel and The Furious 5. A Skillz: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, although the Furious 5 have just released a statement saying Flash had nothing to do with the record! Awkward… Points all round. Prince guest wrote Chaka Khan’s ‘I Feel For You’ - but who else guested on the record? Krafty Kuts: I know Melle Mel raps on this, so definitely him. I am sure Stevie Wonder plays the harmonica… so him as well! A Skillz: I think Melle Mel did the rap, oh and Stevie wonder on harmonica. 100% sure of that. And again, good 80s knowledge. Which rock band had a one
armed drummer? Krafty Kuts: This I know as it has come up in a pub quiz before! Def Leppard. A Skillz: EASY! Def Leppard. Rick Allen. I was always fascinated by this guy as a young drummer. He had an extra pedal that triggered the snare. The boys have hit form, points for each. Who sings the line ‘I want my MTV’ in the Dire Straits hit ‘Money For Nothing?’ Krafty Kuts: Mark Knopfler, but it sounds like it could be someone else… that I am not sure about… A Skillz: No idea. Half a point for Krafty – it was actually Sting. THE VERDICT: 6.5 TO KRAFTY AND 4 TO A SKILLZ A final word from A Skillz: I’d like to defend my lack of knowledge, because I was born in the 80s. I think the questions I have confidently answered relate directly to the music I dig from this era. Having said that, I reckon I’d do better in a 70s quiz… so that’s not really a valid excuse now is it! A Skillz & Krafty Kuts, Thursday November 5, Zero Gravity 8pm-3am, free entry until 10pm free entry for ladies until midnight, AED100.
Address: Grand Excelsior Hotel (Ex Dhow Palace Hotel), Mankhool Street, Bur Dubai 043599992
5 minutes with... Nico Stojan Deep Like have invited back the former hip hop artist, now a deep house specialist, to play their popular Thursday night throwdown. We sat down with the Berliner to talk pride, family and his addictions (don’t worry, it’s just sugar)
Dubai is… Impressive, and it’s changing so fast. The track I’m most proud of making is… I am not proud of something, I am more happy that I was able to create a feeling that other people like as well. And one of the tacks for example could be ‘Blue Hour’ from my album.
Win a table and entry for 4 people. Head to infusion.ae
Over the years, my sound has… Become different and maybe warmer. My biggest fan is… My sister. The global dance music scene is… Sometimes pretty boring. My Mum thinks my music is… Not what she would listen to all day long. The best club I’ve played this year was… Heart in Ibiza. One thing no one knows about me is… That I don’t have a driver’s licence. My biggest vice is… Sugar. The last time I cried was… When I was watching a very good movie. My show in Dubai will be… Amazing like the last time but definitely a bit different as well!

Ever wanted to know how much Michael Eavis, one of the most successful festival promoters in the world, takes home a year? Millions, right? Well, no. The 80 year old has an annual salary of AED350,000 and instead donates most of the AED180 million annual turnover for Glastonbury to charity. He added: "There is no money stashed anywhere. We do a lot on the charity side – we aim for £2 million a year. I like to go into the following year on the edge – I like that. I like the challenge. Yesterday, the girls said there is a quarter of a million left over. I said let's get rid of it, send it on to the charity today."
BEAT FEET
New Balance have made a pair of trainers with Technics, you say? Yup, that’s right vinyl junkies, the the New Balance M1500 x Technics SL1200MKII Custom have just been released, and they are bad boys. The only problem is that there are just 3 pairs of these in existence, so they’re harder to come by than a pair of Yeezys.
Up stream Good news audiophiles – the UAE has another regional streaming service. We had a quick chat with the team at Guvera to find out what to expect, and why they think they’re better than Beats
So, Guvera – I think I've heard of you before… (Laughs) I’m glad you have! We’ve actually just launched our music streaming app last month in the UAE, and we’re already at 70,000 users – with numbers increasing weekly. What does Guvera do and why should I listen? Guvera is the new music streaming app transforming the way users consume music. Just rich, sound-based honesty. Basically, it’s free-access to unlimited legal international and local music. What’s not to love? Streaming music seems like the future… Music streaming is NOW, my friend! Access NOT ownership is the new way to consume music and we take it up a notch with a stellar app you can truly rely on. You get what you want, when you want it. We help users access their favourite tracks, and also introduce them to new music. We use local curators so that the music is always relevant and on trend. Can I listen to music offline? The app has been designed to support low data mobile networks and has a bespoke advance buffering technology built directly into the app to avoid additional data charges when streaming frequently. Ok, so how do I sign up? We have two plans basically –
the free “Play” service, which is quite simply a brand supported free application for download on iOS, Android. All you have to do is sign up with your email ID or connect with your Facebook account. We also have the “Guvera Platinum” plan, which is a premium, on-demand service. For just AED32.99 a month, you gain complete control of your music experience. Want it for your desktop? Log on to www. guvera.com. How do I know you've got the music I like? Two things: firstly, we’ve got an extensive range of both local and international current and back catalogue tracks from all over the world. Our current catalogue of 2.5 million songs boasts international, Arabic and Bollywood music, and is growing daily. Secondly, Guvera has a unique feature called “#PLAY” – so, what this does is provides users with the ability to choose #Tags that are hand curated based on genres, moods etc. And a bonus one, just for you, you can start stations based on your favourite artist or song and also manage your own personalised playlists. How’s that for ‘complete entertainment’? How much do you pay artists, and how do they get paid? Being a legal music streaming
service, we give back to the labels and artists what’s rightfully theirs. Digital Streaming as a format doesn’t allow or encourage copying/ piracy or music being transferred from one device to another without right holders getting paid. Our platforms ensure transparency for labels, artists and our users know they are consuming legal music while their favourite artists get paid Jay Z and friends didn't come across very well when they launched Tidal – how would you have done it differently? Guvera is a unique model in itself. We have put brands and consumers at the core of our strategy. Our focus is emerging
markets where we see huge value losses to music industry and it translates in demand for music with free access. This is where brands kick in and seamlessly integrate within Guvera’s unique advertisement offerings that are non disruptive. So while listening to music, users can engage with e-commerce and lifestyle branded content. Why are you better than Apple or Beats? (Laughs) I’m sure you can guess, but think of it this way – we offer free access to legal music, we’re consumer and brand focused and it’s just a matter of time before music lovers turn to us for the best music experience. www.guvera.com
DJ BOOTH: IVAN MINUTI
The QBara resident is next in our DJ Booth, talking about design, feng shui, hiking and – of course – music One thing you might not know about me is... I am very interested in interior design and I love to research and understand how specific designers came up with their ideas. Another aspect of my love of design is Feng Shui. If your house is not set up correctly, is messy or disordered you cannot function and I believe that your life will be chaotic. My worst ever job was... I feel blessed as I have never had a bad job but every job that I have had
has given me the opportunity, in some way, to realise my dream of being a DJ. My favorite ever record is... “The Dark Side of the Moon” by Pink Floyd (1973). A classic album that does not need any kind of presentation. Djing is much like... Cooking; everybody can cook, because everybody likes to eat or has to eat! And it is the same with music; everyone listens to music, and everyone can make a selection of their own favourite tunes. Dubai clubbing scene is... Evolving. When I arrived here back in 2011, the situation was very commercial everywhere. Dubai is a city that is growing fast and the situation has evolved a lot with the opening of new clubs and underground venues, allowing DJs to express themselves more creatively. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... A gig in Milan back in the days for the centenary of a very important car manufacturer. It was a stunning night at Triennale Museum in Milan. I was scheduled to play for the closing of the event, but for many different factors there was something wrong in the scheduling for all the
international guest DJs who were supposed to play there. To cut the story short, it was as if all those superstar DJs there performed a warm up for me: I found I was the main act of the night! What is your guiltiest pleasure... I have been using computers to perform for several years but I still buy vinyl editions of my favourite albums from online stores. I actually feel guilty about buying so many records and some I have not used yet; it was mainly just to own them. If you could DJ in any decade it would be... Definitely the early 70s, which saw the rise of movements like Flower Power and the sexual revolution in the Occidental world: there was a kind of global experimentation, everything was new, different, people were not afraid to open their minds to new concepts. I’m not a politician but... If I could be an important one, I would fight to give free internet to everybody, in order to have access to all the opportunities provided by the internet, such as reading Infusion Magazine. soundcloud.com/ ivan_minuti/sms1

Weird News GOOF IN BOOTS
Never mix business and pleasure, a piece of advice the Associated Press could take note of. After drafting a killer tweet about the CIA and their breached email security, the AP Twitter account linked the story to… a cat in a pirate costume. Quite a few of their 55,000 followers noticed and weren’t slow to make fun of the mistake.
AUNT SUES NEPHEW AFTER HUG BROKE HER WRIST Sadly for humanity, that’s a true headline. Jennifer Connell sought $127,000 in damages after her nephew hugged her at his birthday party. She claimed her nephew, then eight, acted unreasonably when he leaped into her arms after she arrived at his birthday party. The exuberant greeting caused her to fall to the ground and break her wrist, the lawsuit claimed. The impact on her life was huge: “I was at a party recently and it was difficult to hold my hors d’oeuvre plate.” Thankfully, the human race came to our salvation, and ruled in the boys favour.

The Sho Must Go On Stephen Day gets hooked after a date with the sushi plaice in town, Sho Cho.
I would wager that when you ate your first piece of Sushi you thought Japanese cuisine was a fad. But it’s still with us and if anything it’s gaining traction. Dubai has its far share of far eastern eateries but one of the longest standing is tucked away in Dubai Marine and is a little piece of oriental heaven. I hold my hands up: 8 years here and I’ve never eaten anywhere in Dubai Marine Beach Resort, this wharf full of different restaurants nestling behind Jumeriah Beach Road. Right at the back of the development is Sho Cho, half inside/half out on a well lit terrace overlooking the marina and out to sea. Although the weather has calmed down, we decided to sit inside as it was a humid late September night and perused the menu over a chilled pint of Asahi. The inviting decor of dark wood is offset with neon blue jellyfish adorning the walls and a well stocked bar area and DJ booth at the far end. It’s all very chilled and laidback which suits its location perfectly. After some advice from Maricar our extremely nice and knowledgeable waitress we worked our way through some choice dishes. We started with standard Japanese fair edamame, but here it came with a sharp zesty sauce. We then tucked into a light seaweed salad, a vinegar-laced warm mushroom salad and my personal favourite, prawns with apple soy which coated the inside of my mouth with a sweet salty goo whilst the soft delicate prawns dissolved. I could have left happy at that point but we moved onto a chilled fresh mixed sashimi platter full of salmon and tuna. I was glad to see it also contained octopus, often under-rated when presented as sashimi, so I ate the lot.
We rested and waited for the mains which arrived sizzling and plentiful: a Salmon Teriyaki that fell apart beautifully, garlic squid cooked just on the right side of under as I like it and a tangy signature rock shrimp, all of which were plenty big enough to share. We struggled to finish but – obviously – left room for a small desert, which was a warming ginger ice cream packed full of flavour and an Ice Cream Mochi all washed down with a really great cup of Earl Grey tea.
Sho Cho has a lot going for it; their location is pretty and recommended for a romantic night out or maybe attend one of the weekend events (the Night Vibes hosted Little Tea Party brunch comes with great reviews). The cooking is crisp, clean and modern without detracting from the flavour and the portion sizes are very generous. We are looking forward to heading back, I just hope the prawn and apple soy is still on the menu when we do. Sho Cho, Dubai Marine Beach Resort, 04 346 1111, www.sho-cho.com
JUST FOR
CONQUER MIDDLE EAST
Sneaker culture is on the rise in the city, and there’s now a new home for all things trainer as Conquer have launched in Dubai. Kris Balerite gives us the lowdown on his passion project Congratulations on the launch, how long have you been planning this? Almost 2 years now and as soon as we found the right location to build the store 6 months ago we had to make it happen immediately. And why do you need a store when you can buy so many sneakers online? Will you be online as well? Conquer is more than a store. In some countries sneaker stores are more like club houses were like minded collectors and buyers don’t necessarily buy when they go to the store: they just chill and talk to each other, share insights and knowledge to each other or they just simply hang out with the store managers. We wanted to create
that neighborhood sneaker vibe where everyone know each other by their first name and in this computer age you needed something like that especially here in Dubai. What trainers are you stocking, what have been popular so far? We’ve got a variety of brands. Our bread and butter right now is our basketball footwear which are Nikes, Jordans, Under Armor and coming soon, Adidas basketball. Upstairs, which is our lifestyle sneaker brands, we have brands like ASICS, Puma, Saucony, K swiss and soon some dope Reebok Classics. Right now it's the Nike and Asics that are getting more attention.
Any trainers that you're still trying to hunt down? That's a tough one - it would probably be the A.R.C New Balance 1300 Pack. They came in 3 colour ways and I hunted each one for every 2 years. I’m still looking for those Nicekicks x Asics Gel lyte 3. Was the hype about the Yeezy Boosts justified? Kanye is "hype.” Leaving Nike for Adidas was one the biggest news stories in sneaker history 2 years ago, so after 2 successful models with Nike there was a lot anticipation on what Kanye could bring to Adidas designwise. It's actually a pretty simple and comfortable shoe but the price tag to accompany it is a
little questionable especially if you’re not exposed to this culture. You're part of Sole DXB – we loved your event last year, are you back? Yes it's an annual event, please follow us on Instagram and our Facebook page, we will be announcing the dates and our campaign very soon. You've been in Dubai for a long time, you must be proud of the way the city's street culture has grown and flourished? Yeah it's becoming more exciting every year and I think it's the influx of expats that are coming in together with the locals who are becoming more modernized, plus you have the kids who grew up here like me. Now the city has many great events and places were people can interact and share ideas and eventually it becomes organic. People interact and share ideas, it just goes on and on, that's just how I see it. And if Infusion are stepping out this weekend, what pair of trainers should we be wearing? Keep it simple: if you’re going to a club a pair of Adidas Stan Smiths or a pair of Chuck Taylor Converse would do. facebook.com/ ConquerMiddleEast Centurion Star Tower, Port Saeed, Deira

Holloween Slutty female Vampires aside, there is nothing – I repeat nothing – good about Halloween. Halloween is when music is shunted further down the entertainment axis in favour of hastily hired Ghost costume (a sheet over your head), gaggles of headless hordes and dead behind the eyes zombies (or they could be Dubai’s bankers out for the night, same difference). More than anything, though, I despise the commercialism – dress up like a discarded Nightmare on Elm Street extra and you could win loads of money which you can then waste on over-priced drinks for the night. And every venue is in on it, every sodding venue. And the music, the cornerstone of clubbing? Ah who gives a flying f***, it’s Halloween. Let’s dress up like challenged five year olds and drink our own body weight in vodka just because. Actually, I lied – there is one other redeeming feature about Halloween night. Watching guys and gals dressed as Centurions or Witches do the walk of shame the next morning. That’s comedy gold right there.
