Good news EDM fans! Hardwell is rumoured to be coming back to Dubai early next for a stand alone gig.

Well done to the city’s leaders, who are aiming to make Dubai the most sustainable city in the world by 2050, running largely off solar power.

Tailgating cars on the Abu Dhabi highway. May you be plagued with David Guetta tunes every time you turn on the radio for your dangerous driving. F1 selfies. Yes, you’re on a boat, yes, you’ve had a good time, and no, you won’t be able to afford to eat for the next few months all for those Instagram photos. Too many parties and not enough people. The days of easy money are over, but with so many clashing big events, we’re not sure that message has got through. Sometimes, less is more.

WE LOVE Night Vibes

Re-inventing yourself isn’t easy – just ask Puff Daddy/Diddy/Doddy – but Night Vibes made it look easy. After launching as Electric Days, the cult rooftop party had to re-brand after some internal problems, emerging as Night Vibes soon after. The name might have changed, but the vibe remained the same – open-minded clubbers, free spirits and a forward thinking music policy that takes in house, nu-disco and techno. They’ve also been taking the party across town: from Sho Chos to Story Rooftop, and even to the Jebel Ali Shooting Range. The attention to detail has remained constant throughout the changes – from the light and sound, to the club décor, they go the extra mile to make sure the party stands out from the rest. And with their next party featuring ‘Night Air’ star Jamie Woon playing a live set, they’ve upped the ante once again. Up next: One Big Vibes feat. Jamie Woon, Friday January 15

GROOVE ON THE GRASS FEAT. NICOLAS JAAR @ EMIRATES GOLF COURSE Never ones to shy away from adventurous bookings, Chilean musician Nicolas Jaar was the big name on the bill for their last regular party of 2015. And it’s testament to their courage and conviction that they put him on the main stage. After excellent warm up sets by JC and James Locksmith, Jaar took a while to get the near capacity crowd into gear, but soon rewarded the huge crowd with a set that dipped and turned and rewarded the listener. Thanks to their 2nd stage, however, if Jaar wasn’t doing it for you, then Magda was on hand to smash it in the tent with a pulsing techno set, leaving it perfectly set up for their NYE date with Richie Hawtin. BLUR @ YAS ISLAND Closing out the F1 weekend were Britpop kings Blur. After kicking off their show with ‘Lonesome Street’ from their new album The Magic Whip, they quickly followed it up with their 1991 hit ‘There’s No Other Way’ to a eager audience who were ready for a sing-a-long. Albarn then declared ‘Right, we’re going to play lots of songs you know now’ and launched into ‘Coffee & TV’, ‘Beetlebum’, ‘Trimm Trabb’, and ‘Tender.’ They finished off that run of classics with huge hit ‘Park Life’ to a now bouncing and energetic crowd. ‘Country House’ was next up and according to my admittedly small research, this is the first time the band have played the track live this year. It was a real treat for everyone there, even if guitarist Graham Coxon didn’t seem too impressed. They finished off their set with the beautifully chilled ‘To The End’ and ‘This is a Low’ reminding you just how good a band they are, even if it was quite a muted response from the crowd when they exited stage left. The band bounced back on for the encore with their massive anthem ‘Girls & Boys’ whipping the crowd into a frenzy. They then slowed things down with ‘For Tomorrow’ and ‘The Universal’ before Daman Albarn asked ‘Do You Want It?’ and finished with their biggest track ‘Song 2’. A fitting way to end an amazing night. SOLE DXB @ D3 We did warn you that Sole DXB would be one of the best weekends in the (packed) event calendar, and if you missed out, you only have yourself to blame. There was music, lots of music: from The Recipe, The Narcycist and Mobb Deep showcasing their live hip hop sounds to Mo City and Dan Greenpeace dropping vinyl science backed up by Hollaphonic’s Olly Wood and then Raxon going back to back with Smokingroove, there were headline events across D3. And then there were the brands – Puma had a pool, and some innovative cocktails, while adidas had their ambassadors on display including the great Stan Smith while Reebok had teamed up with the Night Vibes crew for some hard hitting house sounds. And then there were you lot, the cool kids in town, who were out in force across the weekend, wearing the dopest kicks and making the event come alive. Shame we have to wait another year until we do it all again, but consider this fair warning to make sure you mark your attendance next year.

ZIYA SHOW @ PACHA Having been semi seasonal regulars at Pacha Ibiza in our formative years, we walked into Pacha Dubai’s dinner show with much intrigue. Greeted by masked characters holding lamps, our party was theatrically walked through the dimly lit venue where we were introduced to our waiter and sommelier. As we waited for our first course to arrive, we were treated to our inaugural live performance. Ziya, meaning light, is inspired by the intrepid travels of explorer Ibn Battuta. Reminiscent of a mini Cirque du Soliel, the show featured an incredibly talented set of dancers, acrobats, trapeze artists and performers flowing, balancing and hanging all round us, utilising moving platforms, aerial silk and other props. As the performance ended our food and drinks arrived in clockwork fashion. We tucked into the Truffle Organic Chicken Satay, Crab Salad, Calamari and Winter Truffle Dumplings only to experience an explosion of subtle but distinct flavours. The evening continued with more performances, each one topping the last in skill and technical ability, keeping us captivated, as we moved onto the main course which included an exceptional Chillean Sea Bass with White Truffle and Japanese Greens. Although worlds apart from previous experiences with Pacha Ibiza, this is certainly a dinner show you don’t want to miss Vip Patel

AUDIO TONIC VS WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS FEAT. DJ FALCON @ 360 Dance music and clubbing is a release, a time to lose yourself on the dancefloor. Which made the arrival of French house producer and Daft Punk collaborator DJ Falcon just a week after the Paris attacks all the more poignant. After a fine warm up from audio tonic resident Jordan Sweeting full of escalating deep house cuts, the ‘Contact’ star stepped up and swiftly upped the tempo, playing a semi-live set on Ableton to create a proper party atmosphere. Basslines, vocals and melodies were teased in and out, and the crowd responded well to the mash up of house, classic French cuts and refined electro, mobbing the dancefloor and singing as one when his 2003 anthem ‘Together’ was dropped. A very fitting tune for a very unsettling time in history, everyone grinned and sang along in unison. Dance music might not change the world, but it does make it an easier place to live in so soon after the Paris atrocities.

SATURDAY BRUNCH @ CIELO The faint sound of Latin music wafted through the air as we strolled across the Dubai creek car park signalling our arrival at Cielo’s South American themed experience. Walking through the rooftop venue one can’t help but be in awe of the stunning Dubai Creek and skyline views, which were brought to us this Saturday afternoon by a live Cuban inspired soundtrack. The Buena Vista Social brunch, influenced by Latin street food and Frescos, offered an array of a la carte & BBQ dishes from the shores of Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile and further afield. Tapas sized portions of Empanadas, Soft Shell Tacos, Coxinha, Beef Sliders, Calamari and Tempura Tiger prawns, were brought to our table by an attentive waiting staff. A range of refreshing cocktails were also available via the pop up punch bar, our favourites being the Raspberry Lemonade & Mango Papaya. Cielo’s live Cuban band kept the atmosphere going as brunch goers from the predominantly Latino crowd took to the dance floor after a few libations to shake their hips to the soulful beats. Starting from AED 225 for a soft drink package, AED 275 for house spirits and AED 325 for the bubbles package, it’s well worth checking out. Vip Patel

IN TECHNO WE TRUST

The city has been undergoing a techno revolution in recent years, with home-grown festival Groove on the Grass leading the charge. Now that they’ve booked Richie Hawtin to play their NYE party, we explain why this is a seismic booking for the region

D

ubai. It conjures up lots of different images. Glitzy, 7 star hotels, an entertainment oasis in the middle of the Middle East, and most memorably, it’s been described as a city with a ‘skyline on crack.’ Over the years, we’ve progressed from a city that went giddy about Robbie Williams playing back in 2006 to a radically different entity where – as happened recently – we can host Blur, Florence and the Machine, John Digweed, Solomun, Sven Vath, Jamie Jones, 50 Cent, Tinie Tempah and so many more over the F1 weekend. The club and music scene have undergone more shifts than the Big Red, but the city’s nightlife has evolved to service everyone: from high end bottle service clubs to a genuinely creative alternative scene that hosts some of the world’s most credible names. But while some of the big names have come and gone, and some still keep coming whether we like it or not – oh hey David Guetta and Akon! – one name has been conspicuous by its absence. Richie Hawtin. Everyone tried, literally everyone, but the dark lord of techno said no. Even notoriously picky DJs like DJ Scruff said yes after years of persuasion, but the Enter head honcho still refused.

Cover Feature

Which kind of made us a Las Vegas of the Middle East. We had the cash to splash (and some of the rumoured DJ fees stretch well into seven figures in dirhams), but even that wasn’t enough for the principled techno DJ and producer – he wanted authenticity, he wanted a proper techno gig, not a glorified club gig where he played to the bottles and models crew. So, a big well done – in fact, make that a BIG WELL DONE – to Groove on the Grass who not only had the cojones to make the booking, but on the biggest night of the year. Over the years, they’ve built up their reputation, they’ve banked their credibility and worked their way up to the biggest booking the techno scene has seen in this part of the world. Sure, there have been other big bookings, other momentous occasions, but none that have put Dubai on the artistic/club culture map like this. Money talks, but so does loyalty, heritage, dedication and all the other key ingredients for running a dance music festival like Groove on the Grass.

Richie Hawtin :: Need To Know • Age: 45 • English born Canadian • Also known as Plastikman • Runs Ibiza techno night Enter and techno label M_nus • His brother, Matthew, is also a DJ and plays ambient chill out • He views his music as art, and performed as Plastikman at the Guggenheim Museum in New York Groove on the Grass feat. Resident Advisor’s Number 1 DJ, and a firm Dubai favourite, Dixon is back in town on Friday December 18. And, rather specially, is playing a double header at Eden Beach Club during the day, and a club set at Provocateur afterwards. Notoriously hard to pin down for an interview, we trawled the internet to find out more about the Innervisions main man

1

He was nearly a professional footballer and played at national level, but injury curtailed his career. Football’s loss was music’s gain…

2 3

His real name is Steffen Berkhahn, and he was born in 1975.

He very rarely gives interviews – we asked 3 times – as he believes most of the information is already out there in his previous ‘million interviews.’

4 5

He’s exaggerating. Slightly. There are only 532,000 results on Google for Dixon DJ interview. He co-runs Innervisisions with Âme, which is 10 years old this year, and is home to Henrik Schwarz, Laurent Garnier, Mathew Dekay, Gui Boratto, Osunlade, Agoria and more.

6

He believes that DJing is about entertaining himself, first and foremost. ‘First, I don’t want to be standing there like some machine. Second, if I entertain myself, I play the records I really believe in. Then I transfer a message that may be more authentic than otherwise: you should always be honest and only play records for yourself. It sounds very selfish, but actually it’s not.’

7

He doesn’t mind if people think he’s s***. ‘Maybe 30% of the crowd will love the person before me, and think I’m a lame-ass DJ by comparison, but at least they’ll have an opinion. I’ll stick in their memory as being s***. I really want to create opinions, because then maybe another 30% will think ‘Wow, this guy is amazing.”

The Brothers gonna work it out

Eden’s latest big booking are Bronx duo The Martinez Brothers – here’s an impassioned plea why you should go see them in action on Friday December 11 It’s not often that 2 DJs are better than one. When 2 DJs get in the same booth, they tend to escalate the music like an arms race, each one going bigger to try and outplay the other, leading to a musical stalemate. But in the case of the Martinez Brothers, two New York raised talents, two DJs – and four hands – is very much the best you can get. DC10 residents for the past 5 years, the duo were raised on their father’s devotion to cult US house club Paradise Garage and have taken that paternal inspiration and created a heady blend of house, techno, funk-laden basslines, often getting the party started with their tag-team DJ action in the booth. They’re also cool – just look at them. They’ve curated catwalk shows for everyone important enough, and take their own fashion style very seriously indeed. They were first spotted by Dennis Ferrer and Erick Morillo and given spots at New York house temple The Shelter and then at Morillo’s night at Pacha Ibiza. Since then, they’ve conquered the world one gig at a time. They even got involved in a recent Twitter beef with DJ Sneak, a sure-fire sign that the Bronx brothers have made the big time.

Deeper underground

The Plus Minus crew have had an outstanding 2015, with their recent event with David August re-defining the term roadblock. They round off their year in fine style with none other than tINI headlining. Infusion’s Stu Todd caught up with the DC 10 star to find out how her summer in Ibiza has been, news of a fresh album in the works and how she prepares for her debut in Dubai… You have just put the finishing touches to another summer in Ibiza, what were the stand out parties for you? The last month of tINI and the gang held at Lips were some of my favorites parties. Although I really enjoyed the beach vibe at No Name, the intimate setting of Lips added a whole new touch to the day into night time party. One of the sets that I enjoyed playing the most was the back to back that I shared with Bill Patrick, I always enjoy a good back to back and that day the vibe was untouchable. Much has been said about the changes on the island, what is your take on the current state of affairs there? Well it is obvious that the crowd at the parties have been changing. Not just at my parties, but all other parties that I played as well. More and more tourists have been attending the parties when in past years it has been a lot of familiar faces and people from the island. It seems that things are moving more towards the upper class.

The police have been getting involved in shutting down a few parties too including your own at No Name Beach, how has that affected the overall vibe on the island? It has shed light on the fact that the island is inevitably changing. To all of the locals it just showcased the gradual decline in the party scene that is taken place. It put a bit of a downward feeling over the whole island. Not many of the usual partygoers have been going out. More and more people are deciding to enjoy the island in other ways aside from the music to try to see some of the beauty the island still has. It has definitely been a sad time for the music this summer and the whole island suffers because of it. Your tINI and the Gang parties have really been hitting their stride the last few years, what do you have coming up that you are most excited about? Well, I have the chance to do a tINI and the gang in Cairo this year, a place I have never been.

I have always been fascinated with the history and culture there, and the fact that my music can bring me there means more to me than I could put into words. What’s the next step for the brand? No major changes. The concept of tINI and the gang remains to continue showcasing new talent and underground artists that generally remain under the radar. I feel with this constant theme, the brand could never get old because the artists are constantly changing and evolving. What can we expect from you release wise coming up? I am currently working on a new album which I am pretty excited about. I have just taken a small holiday to work in the studio and things are looking good at the moment. You make your Dubai debut for Plus Minus shortly, will this be your first visit to the region? What is your take on the scene there? It is my first time playing in Dubai and I am very excited as I always am when playing in new places. I can’t really speak on the scene there but all of my friends that have played there have told me great things.

How do you approach playing in a new country? Well I usually follow my first impression of the venue I am playing based on the size, the people and the feel of the club. After my initial feeling I am usually a good judge of where to start from. I always jump around a bit and play a mix of everything until I find my niche. From there I just let my intuition lead the way and usually it works out. Plus Minus feat. Tini, Friday December 11, Level 41, 10pm-3am

It’s gearing up to be a big month at Pacha Ibiza Dubai as they have a big NYE bash, their continuing Ziya Dinner Show and some guy called Norman Cook…

PACHA’S

BIG DECEMBER

With their fabled rooftop providing stunning views across the city and the midnight firework displays, there’ll be few better places to welcome in 2016. And the good news is that getting up there won’t break the bank, as tables for 4 start at AED4000, while general admission to all 3 floors is AED400 including a free drink. Plus, they have live DJ trio Paris House Addicts playing, who combine an electronic violin, live percussion and DJ to create their own unique sound.

Alternatively, you can start your NYE – and any weekend night – at their Ziya Show, a stunning journey into the Arabian night that brings together a bespoke menu and some of the best performers in the city (see our What We Did review for the full low down). Their NYE show packages start at AED 750, with doors opening at 8pm for the 5 course extravaganza. As if that wasn’t enough, they have global mega star Fatboy Slim DJing in their main room on Friday December 18. He’s played to millions across the world during his career, and has had countless smash hits including ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat,’ ‘Right Here, Right Now’ and ‘Rockafeller Skank.’ Not only that, but he’s an exceptional DJ, creating cut and scratch mixes perfectly in-sync with his light and visual display, making him a one man show. With over 3 decades at the top of the industry, he’s without doubt one of the most famous DJs in the world and still one of the nicest men you could ever hope to meet. A true legend (we’re still not convinced on the flowery shirts, though Norman).

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL - ZIPPER DOWN Indie/Rock :: facebook.com/eaglesofdeathmetal/

 Now forever tainted as the band forced to flee the Bataclan as dozens were killed in the recent Paris atrocities, Eagles of Death Metal have achieved a level of fame they’d never have wanted. A fun side project for Queens of the Stone Age Josh Homme and vocalist Jesse Hughes, the duo combine sleazy riffs, tongue in cheek lyrics and make fun sounding rock music; the very antithesis of what happened in Paris. It’s hard to separate their fourth album and the band’s recent history (especially considering the gunmen burst into their dressing room and killed everyone hiding there), so we’re not going to even try. Instead, play this strutting, night-on-the-town album as loud as you dare, and stick two metaphorical fingers up at the world.

DJ Heroes #9 Rone Jaxx

Our favourite Jaxx DJs go in order of preference Rone Jaxx then Basement Jaxx – yeah, he’s that good. The urban King is next up in our series…

First club you played in Dubai? Studio 7, a teenage disco back in 1995 at Le Meridien Garhoud and loads of 3-4 star spots around old Dubai like Deira and Bur Dubai as urban music wasn’t played in big mainstream clubs back then. Diamond club which is now Stables would be the first known club. First track you played? ‘Poison’ by Bel Biv Devoe. Best change in the city’s club scene? We now have DJs who run their nights and have more control over music policy compared to before, and that’s led to more diversity in the scene. Worst change in the city’s club scene? This whole concept of playing whatever is on the radio will get you a sure crowd and to keep the music safe without experimenting. Plus back in the day you actually had to have a skill set or be original to get a gig, now there are too many cheap imitations getting gigs thanks to free music downloads/Shazam and software with auto mix. Most places in the world you actually have to have knowledge and talent to be in a big venue and would get caught out. Here they get away with it, well at least in the mainstream venues. Best club still running from when you started? Apartment Lounge & Club at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel which is now Mahiki. The set up of the two rooms and the atmosphere we had in there was a family vibe, that’s how it should be and most clubs lack over here. Key to longevity as a DJ is… Creating awareness about yourself and staying true to your style will result in the right gigs and consistent gigs in the long run. The best way to get gigs is… Consistency. Unsung Dubai hero? Ahmad Turbo. He is one of the original Dubai DJs playing Urban and open format even before me from the 80s and is still around. Dubai DJ you’d most like to go back to back with? I’ve gone back to back with the ones I have respect for and have a similar music understanding already. DJ Mad Hands is crazy dope, we haven’t had the chance to go back to back yet. Upcoming gigs? Smooth Grooves ladies night, every Tuesday at 360. Urban Education, every Thursday at Story Rooftop.

IN THE MIX Evermix is a funky new device that allows you to record any set and then upload it to your online profile. Now launched in the UAE, we caught up with their Gulf Brand Ambassador Drinky to find out more So, Evermix – who are you, what do you do? Evermix MixBox is an interface that turns your iOS device into a DJ set recorder. It sits between your DJ gear and your mobile phone, and it lets you

immediately publish your DJ set on the Evermix streaming service. The way it works is you connect MixBox to your controller or mixer’s output, and you connect your phone running the Evermix DJ app to it. The MixBox

captures high-quality audio and then sends it to the Evermix DJ app which records it, along with any photos you’ve taken with your iPhone, iPad, or even your iPod touch. When you’re done, you can edit your mix before uploading it and the photos you’ve taken to the Evermix website thru the app. While there are a lot of ways to record your DJ sets (almost all DJ software have a record function), none has yet provided a simple all-inclusive hardware/software/ cloud solution that engages with your audience on this way. Evermix seeks to do that with MixBox and Evermix DJ, so whether you’re a controller DJ, someone who uses CDJs and USBs, or even a strictly vinyl jock, you’ve now got an interesting and quick way to share your mix online soon as you’re done. How do I get involved, how much does it cost? We’re currently rolling it out with a selected group of Founder Members who are working with us to develop new features, provide feedback and get the word out there. DJs who want to get onto the Evermix platform once it’s opened up can sign up now via the website. MixBoxes will become available early next year to DJs who have signed up. Costs are yet to be determined but we aim to make it affordable for all.

What if my set sucks and I mess up a mix – can I remove my post? DJs can listen back to their sets before publishing them to the site. Even after they’ve been published the DJ still has the option to hide them at a later date if they no longer want it up on their channel. So who’s using Evermix at the moment, and is this like the new Soundcloud? It’s different from Soundcloud in that it focuses on live mixes and radio shows and operates more like an on-demand radio streaming service. There’s also a social element that lets fans who attended the events post their photos from the night up on to the timeline. DJs can use their channels to promote their forthcoming shows and sell tickets. Right now there are a range of founder member DJs including Doorly, weiss, Kidnap Kid, Gorgon City, Rudimental, Seamus Haji and Technasia to name just a few. Labels such as Toolroom are also starting to create channels where they can showcase sets from their events and their connected artists https://evermix.fm/ brand/ toolroom/ Can I download mixes, or just stream them? At this stage it’s only streaming due to the licenses in place but that might change later on down the line. evermix.fm

Advertorial

10 MINUTES WITH...

The leading stage and set company in the UAE with over 20 years history Exclusively for Infusion Magazine, IBS-Group takes you behind the scenes into how we create the perfect event

Advertorial Time to get innovative Before considering logistics, IBS believes in assisting you to visualize your ambitions and designs. We have Barry Gonzaga, Senior Designer on hand, helping clients bring their designs to life! Taking an average of 3-4 drawings a week during the peak season, Barry explains “the complexity of the drawings can range from a small exhibition stand to a huge nightclub launch depending on the client’s requirements. Typically they can take up to 1 day to more than 1 week to finalize. The drawings and designs will be represented through the operations team creation, this is why it is vital to have this correct from the beginning.” Taking a hands on approach The designs are complete, now it’s time for the execution Rob Bertasso, Operations and Logistic Manager at IBS gives the low down on the meticulous attention to detail put into each design during the creation process. Working alongside Samir Chikhodrawala, Operations Manager, they explain that a project will alternate between the carpentry and painting to the sanding and steelwork until it oozes perfection. “Every project, both large and small is a detailed process. Even when a design has been approved” says Rob, “the IBS Group adopts a flexible approach with clients adjusting their requirements right until the last moments. The operations team can have up to 10 different projects a week to complete, meaning the time scale during this process is very tight to ensure everything is ready in time for a particular event.” The Build Do you ever look at a stage and wonder how it was possible? Lorenzo Gempies is one of the Project Managers that make it possible having worked with us for 7 years. Partnered alongside David Simpson and Joel Neale, they fully co-ordinate the process from offloading the products on site to ensuring everything is correctly put together for the event. “It is important that we are organized onsite especially as bigger events will consist of 20-30 men taking up to 3 weeks to install. One mistake could change the whole visual. We are very proud of our work: our strategic planning and design has positioned us where we are today.” www.ibs-group.com

DAVID BEATS GOLIATH The UK/UAE acoustic/folk four piece have clocked up nearly 1 million Soundcloud plays and recently released their cracking debut EP

My first musical influence was… The Beatles. My Dad is a Beatles-nut, got married in a white suit, named his sons John, Paul, George (hence my name) and my sister Julia, after the song Lennon wrote for his Mum. He kept his record collection in my bedroom so I’d plug in the headphones and make my way through Beatles A-Z. My favourite band/act in the UAE is… It’s a tie with Physical Graffiti and The Deer Hum. I always had them in mind as support acts for our EP launch, so that’s what we did. They both write beautiful songs, and have a distinctive sound. The last pop star I liked was…Neil Degrasse Tyson. My sound is best described as… A plethora of pinatas, or Indie Folk I suppose, as people tell me they hear influences of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Mumford and Sons, The Avett Brothers. Best piece of advice you’ve received? Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. What’s your musical guilty pleasure? It’s too disturbing to admit, even to myself. Pass. Best claim to fame? Brian May handed me my Degree at my university graduation ceremony in Liverpool. I thought I couldn’t let my chance go without saying anything, so as he handed me my certificate and we posed for the photo, I said “Thanks for the music” and he responded with “Er…you too”, obviously caught the poor fellow off guard. I also met Axl Rose when he came to Abu Dhabi, his face is rubbery, and he had attractive ladies dripping off him, so not at all disappointing. When I make it, the one thing I want on my rider is? Emma Watson. My musical motto is…To the topper most of the poppermost’ I coined that, all me. Wasn’t John Lennon. Best lyrics of all time? May You Never, by John Martyn or California by Joni Mitchell. www.facebook.com/davidbeatsgoliathmusic soundcloud.com/davidbeatsgoliath

DJ BOOTH: CONSOUL TRAININ

The Nu-Disco producer and resident DJ at Creek hot spot Cielo talks signing to Ministry of Sound and which Michael Jackson track he can drop into every set One thing you might not know about me is... That I when I am playing music I am a totally different person than I am in my real life! My favorite ever record is... The track called “Wonderful Life” by a British singer Black from his 1987 album of the same name, it has the perfect lyrics and perfect combination of music and melodies. Djing is much like... Transferring emotions from the booth to the mind and the heart of the people that are around you. If you have the

right flow the crowd will follow you until the end of the night! Dubai clubbing scene is... Getting bigger and bigger every year with more international DJs coming over to play. I’m really proud of... Having great friends and partners in Dubai; I think it’s the secret of success in having a good life in the sandpit. What track could you drop in every set? Without doubt a remix of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You” and Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”. In every one of my sets you will find a good, yet different version of both of them. I believe that everybody is in love with these tracks. I can’t live without... Playing, creating music and DJing – my real passions. To wake up every morning and listen to music is the perfect way to start the day. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... When one of my tracks “Stop” was released by two of the biggest record labels worldwide, Ministry Of Sound and Strictly Rhythm and entered the Hot Top 100 in iTunes in USA and No. 4 at DMC WORLD Chart. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Whenever I produce music, I always have a scoop (or two) of strawberry ice cream – I swear it helps me to concentrate… If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... It would be DJing in a discotheque with a big dance floor and huge disco ball in the middle of the mid of 80s playing Italodisco songs. I have heard unreal stories about the extravagant parties back in the day from DJs who used to play them. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Playing back to back with the No.1 DJ in the world - DJ Hardwell - in 2013 at Club Venue in Athens. Also I would love to play again with The Magician as I did last season at Cielo Sky Lounge. I’m not a politician but… I want to serve the music community! soundcloud.com/consoultrainin

DJ SURPRISES CLUB AFTER PLAYING ‘SUMMER OF 69’ IN THE MIDDLE OF A TECHNO CLUB TO SHAME REQUESTER

In a move that’s been applauded across the city, a local DJ actually played Bryan Adam’s ‘Summer of 69’ after the 5th time of asking and got on the mic to point out the errant requester. Dubai DJ said that he’d been asked for AC/DC and Bryan Adams repeatedly by the same girl throughout his underground techno set, and decided to name and shame her after she called him a ‘s*** DJ.’ The move opened the floodgates, quite literally, as an emotional outpouring followed, with a helpline – Last Night A DJ Ruined My Life – set up to allow DJs to share their request hell stories.

Plus! Man boasting of lavish yacht parties at F1 actually drinking on his own in a dinghy

SCREEN SAVER Looking Closer

Our favourite festival of the year returns, as Dubai embraces cinema culture for 8 glorious days. Our resident square eyes Stephen Day and Andy Buchan preview the 8 must see films at the Dubai Film Fest dubaifilmfest.com Spotlight Tom McCarthy’s slick and absorbing real-life drama has a delightfully old-fashioned feel that takes us back to the days of 1970s cinema and ‘All The Presidents Men’. This compelling story follows the ‘Spotlight’ team of reporters at “The Boston Globe” as they exposed the Catholic Church’s cover-up of widespread sexual abuse by priests. The cast is tight, the subject controversial: well worth a look.

Under Sandet (Land of Mine) With the planet currently experiencing new terror and wars, perhaps its’ time to reflect and review a story most are unfamiliar with that saw captured Germans used to clear mines on the Danish coast during WWII. The sand dunes of Denmark’s Skallingen peninsula provides a stunning backdrop as young, terrified, boy soldiers are forced into the minefields. The core of the story is focused on a tough sergeant ordered to look after a brigade of young prisoners. The film raises issues about cruelty in times of war and juggling its harrowing story with glimpses of compassion and humanity. It’s not an easy watch but a rewarding one as this story needs to be told. Victoria German director Sebastian Schipper’s fourth film is a striking success. It’s shot in one single take, and while this technique is maybe a gimmick we have seen before, most recently in last year’s DIFF Gala closer Birdman, this slick crime drama is made with a real edge. A young Spanish woman’s night out takes a dark turn when she hooks up with four Berlin men after clubbing, which is just just the beginning for Victoria. An astonishing exercise in technical expertise, as well as in impressive story telling.

Looking Closer Yallah Underground This fascinating documentary looks at bands from the underground created by young Arab artists in Europe and America and woven around the Arab spring. Music becomes a message a symbol of the revolution. Many musical experiments were born prior to the Arab Spring, in its anticipation, while many others were born either during the protests or after, proving no matter where you are from or what background music truly transcends race, colour and creed.

The Peanuts Movie The comic strip classic comes to life with Snoopy leading Charlie Brown through the trials and tribulations of dating. Definitely one for the Mums and Dads and for little kids, it might lack the cutting edge of Pixar’s best works, but with a strong message (everyone is a winner) and some impressive animation, this should go down well with families.

Room An astonishing film, and one that’s rightly opening the festival, Room is the big screen adaptation of the best-selling novel: a mother and son are kidnapped and kept in a solitary room for 7 years before eventually escaping. Heartbreaking and beautifully acted, much of the action is seen through the eyes of the five year old boy, whose entire world consists of The Room. That is until they escape, and he has to contend with the big wide world.

Youth An all star cast feature in this flamboyant film that muses on art and age. Set in Switzerland, Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel play retired composer and film director who reflect on their work and what’s left to achieve, with strong support roles from Jane Fonda and Rachel Weisz. If you needed any further convincing, the wide-screen, poignant film is directed by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino. dubaifilmfest.com

Cool Test

PRINCE ABDI VS ALEX BOARDMAN Laughter Factory comedians Prince Abdi and Alex Boardman go head to head in a battle of the funnies. But who’s funny and who’s just up to funny business?

The funniest word is… PRINCE ABDI: Splash.

ALEX BOARDMAN: I like the child-like words for fart, such as trump, toot, parp etc. All those make me giggle.

The best heckle I’ve heard is… PRINCE ABDI: The material on my shirt is better than your jokes.

ALEX BOARDMAN: In twenty years I’ve yet to hear a good one.

The question I get asked the most is… PRINCE ABDI: Are you related to Prince the artist?

ALEX BOARDMAN: What’s the best heckle you’ve ever heard?

My biggest claim to fame is… PRINCE ABDI: Pretending I knew the artist formerly known as Prince and I got into a concert where Prince was playing.

ALEX BOARDMAN:: I reckon I sometimes wear the oldest trainers on the comedy circuit. Some gorgeous Adidas Vienna from 1984.

Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? PRINCE ABDI: I once got pulled over by police for speeding (27 at a 20 zone so not so rock and roll) but luckily the officer saw me the night before at the Comedy Store in London and he let me off. More luck than fame.

ALEX BOARDMAN: I’m not famous so that would be awkward. In fact I’m going to try that...”Don’t you know who I am?” line just to hear the other person say “Nope.”

Have you ever injured yourself at work? PRINCE ABDI: Yes, I once got introduced and tried to take the mic out the mic stand for only to hit the mic in my mouth. I was bleeding for the duration of my set, the audience thought it was part of the act which helped.

ALEX BOARDMAN:Loads of times. I’ve fallen off stage, tripped, banged my head etc.

It’s not big and clever but… PRINCE ABDI: I sometimes go for hugs when people go for the handshake.

ALEX BOARDMAN: Swearing is ace... and it’s big. And it’s often clever.

Your answer to everything is…. PRINCE ABDI: Chillax.

ALEX BOARDMAN: In a minute.

What’s the best insult you could give to each other? PRINCE ABDI: Nice

ALEX BOARDMAN: I don’t have to insult these guys, they can make themselves look plenty bad enough all on their own.

THE VERDICT:We’re going for Alex Boardman: efficiently funny and a man with good trainer taste. Wednesday 9th Dec – McGettigan’s JLT, 8pm Thursday 10th Dec – Grand Millennium (TECOM), 9pm Friday 11th Dec – Moevenpick Hotel JBR, 9pm Tickets AED140

Pay and display So, I walked into my lawyers office the other day (what, a Monkey needs good legal advice, especially considering the truths that come out of my face) and I asked if I could have a freebie for this case of mistaken monkey identity. Man, you should have seen his face, he went all shades of angry. And yet, people ask bands and DJs to play for free. Because? Well, because the people asking are tight fisted low life scum who are looking to profit off the back of your skills. Unless you’re a registered charity or you’re a not for profit organization, artists need paying. If you’re on a shoe-string budget, then you should re-think your budget – if you’re making money from this event, then so am I. And if you don’t make money from your event, you shouldn’t be doing them, plain and simple. You don’t ask your Dr/taxi driver/pilot to work for free, so don’t try it with DJs and bands. And anyone who does will be named and shamed in this very column, mark my words! Monkey Out... The Angry Monkeys’ views are his own, and don’t necessarily reflect the views of Infusion Magazine.
