A Note From The Editor

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Andy Buchan andy@infusion.ae

We don’t always do things the same way as other magazines in Dubai. We ran the Pan-Arabia Enquirer on our humble pages for several years, helping (in a small way) to help push its satirical genius to the masses. And confuse the hell out of lots (reading the comments on the stories is almost as much fun as the actual content). We’ve gone down the satirical/ironic road with our DJ Resolutions feature this issue – before you bombard us with emails and start a Facebook campaign to get us shut down, please just let me make it clear: it’s a joke, they’re jokes, they’re not true. At all. That said, head to the features pages now to see what Avicii, Guetta, Jamie Jones and more have planned for this year. Elsewhere, talented troubadour Tim Hassall sits down with us to go through his new album track-by-track, we talk to Brazilian DJ Anna ahead of her audio tonic set, get behind the scene’s footage from Raxon’s trip to the BPM festival, and have the usual combination of album, film and event reviews, event listings, local and music news and the Angry Monkey. Enjoy the issue. Andy

Looking Back

What we did

Maxwell @ The Act We hugged Maxwell. That wasn’t quite our mission statement when we agreed to interview him on the red carpet before his gig at The Act, but it was certainly at the back of our mind. And despite him being an hour late, he was charming, accommodating and utterly relaxed. Which wasn’t quite replicated in the snaking queue to get in as the door staff took a very critical opinion of some would be Acters, many of whom were massive Maxwell fans, and didn’t allow them entrance. Those that did make it in were treated to The Act’s usual magic: naughty nurses, sword and balloon swallowers and Champagne being poured from the ceiling. And Maxwell himself was as you’d expect. Charismatic on stage, he’s matured like a fine whisky, with smooth, caramel notes. Quite why he only performed 4 songs is beyond us (is that what constitutes live music now?), and the disappointing sound set up did not do him justice. Still, we got to hug Maxwell, so we’re not complaining.

Punchline Comedy Tour @ Emirates Golf Club Emirates Golf Club lit up with laughter as the talented Alex Boardman, Johnny Awsum and Phil Butler entertained with some pure comedy gold. Phil Butler, acting as compere, commenced proceedings with a hilariously heated conversation with Siri and his version of The Brothers Grimm fairytale Cinderella that definitely wasn’t fit for children! Alex Boardman then stepped to the mic comically recanting the pit falls of marriage in a way that would make any single male in the audience think twice about popping the question. Finally the multi talented Jonny Awsum, armed with guitar in hand, took over and lived up to his name by strumming hilarious renditions of Pop/Country and Western tracks adding lyrics on the fly, leaving the crowd blushing and laughing in equal measure.

Local News Warehouse rave with Amine edge and dance

The Media One Hotel seem to have the coolest venues in town at the moment. Not content with the Dek on 8 and the newly launched Q43, they’ve Competition: just announced that they’re opening up their warehouse space on Level 41, a larger We have version of Level 9 which impressed so much 2 pairs of during the summer. tickets to give And UK promoters DBP Events have away, head to capitalized on it, by starting a monthly night infusion.ae bringing over the best house, electro and bass DJs to play on the venue’s Funktion 1 sound system. They’re kicking things off on Friday February 21 with Amine Edge and Dance, two in-demand French house producers. Advance tickets at Dhs100 are on sale now from Platinumlist.ae, with support from BBC Radio 1's Mistajam.

JT hits the UAE

His previous Abu Dhabi show is still up there as one of the best live displays in the country, so to say we’re hyped for the return of Timberlake is an understatement. His latest album, The 20/20 Experience is taylor-made for the big (band) stage, not to mention his extensive back catalogue which includes ‘Like I Love You,’ ‘Sexyback’ and ‘Senorita’. He’ll be taking to the du Arena stage on Friday May 23, with tickets on sale now from thinkflash.ae.

Timo Maas at Nasimi

One of our favourite monthly nights is back in action again in February as Plus Minus are bringing down Timo Maas to play at Nasimi on Friday February 7. After having a mega hit with his remix of Azzido Da Bass’s ‘Doom’s Night,’ Maas became a household name with remixes for Fatboy Slim and Madonna, but in later years has carved out a cool niche for himself, partly thanks to his stand out sets at DC10. He’ll be joined by a cracking local line up including Danilo Dumonte, Markii, Rishi and Miss P.M, with things kicking off beach side from 5pm.

New venues in town

It wouldn’t be a new year in Dubai, without a spate of new club and bar openings. Kicking things off, 40 Kong – Dubai’s highest open air bar on the 40th floor – is now open at the H Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road, while just across the road, the sprawling GQ Bar (named after the men’s magazine), will open on January 30 at the JW Marriott Marquis. Staying with bars, the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club is launching Cielo, an open air bar with spectacular views across the Creek and a stunning design. And finally, new club Boutiq opens in February at the Address Hotel, Dubai Mall. The 2 room venue, set on the location of closed favourite Republique, boasts new Friday resident Da Sendri, and a Saturday night dedicated to the city’s best up and coming live musicians.

Steve aoki makes dubai debut

One of the most colourful and energetic DJs in the EDM scene, Steve Aoki will be bringing his cake flinging (no, really) set to Dubai on Thursday February 6 at People By Crystal. The Dim Mak head honcho specialises in big, fun electro, and with a DJ rider that requests an inflatable raft that he crowd-surfes on, his stage presence isn't far behind.

Looking Forward Rumours

Good news music fans. The Backstreet Boys have now removed their March 28 date in Dubai from their online schedule. We've heard that a Lionel Richie gig is in the pipeline for one promoter. Duke Dumont is pencilled in to play Dubai in the next few months.

Big ups to Infusion’s Nthayi who’s now officially a world record holder as part of the longest continuous DJ mix which happened at My Music X last year. We’re amused to hear that popular urban night 411 is hosting a Winter Onsieland party, actively encouraging people to wear their onsie out clubbing. DJ Bliss in a onesie is something we need to see! 2Liv’s Thursday nights have quickly become the urban hot spot in the city, with Shef Codes, Skinny Loop and residents Ejaz and Alex Seda holding it down. The free drinks for ladies from 11pm-1am don’t hurt either!

Rightly telling people in the cinema to be quiet as they natter like housewives, only to find out they’re undercover CID and you’re consequently in trouble for doing the right thing. People writing emails like they're on the set of Pride and Prejudice. Please stop writing Dear at the start of your emails, you're not our Granny. Tune hunting. The digital revolution was supposed to make crate digging a lot easier, but thanks to mistitled genres, thousands of copy-cat releases and our dwindling patience, it's become a chore rather than something we look forward to. Bah!

The

DJ

best

in the world...

1

According to the esteemed dance music site Resident Advisor, Dixon is after he was voted into the top spot by clubbers at the back end of last year. Ahead of his return to Dubai at Blue Marlin Ibiza Dixon first made his entry UAE, we found 4 into the dance music reasons why he’s at world in the early 90s in his native Berlin. Back the top of his game.

then, there wasn’t the internet, there wasn’t Facebook or Beatport (thankfully), and you had to learn the skills needed as a DJ first hand. That meant weekly residencies at clubs like E-Werk and Tresor, holding the crowd in the palm of his hand, finely tuning his craft. And it was here that he found his love of extended sets – not for him the crash-bang-wallop of a one hour greatest hits set, Dixon lost himself in 6 hour and longer sets, taking in deep, tech, jazz and funk influences. Doing things the hard way meant that he learnt his craft. Younger, would-be DJs take note.

2

Back at the start of the millennium, Dixon hooked up with the Jazzanova crew, a free form, multi-limbed jazz meets house crew who helped him start a record label, Recreation Records. With that experience behind him, it wasn’t long until he partnered with Âme to create the hugely important Innervisions label. It was at this time that minimal house was at its peak, with the stripped back techno taking off in clubs around the world. Dixon and Innervisions stuck to their organic house music style, helping to keep a dynamic edge to the house music scene, a shining beacon amongst a sea of hi hats and sonar beeps.

3

While the trance and EDM scene might have the DJ Magazine Top 100, the alternative Resident Advisor poll is seen as a stronger guide to a DJ’s popularity in recent years, especially in the house and techno scene. And after years of strong positions in the Top 100, Dixon walked away with the top spot in 2013 in this publicly voted poll. Being voted the best by your peers is one thing, but when the average clubber who loses it to your sets votes you as the best DJ they’ve seen or heard, then it’s time to take notice.

4

Dixon’s sets are the perfect definition of a DJ straddling the line between cool and commercial. With his Innervisions back catalogue to back him up, he has no problem dropping club smashers like ‘Envision’ or ‘Gotham’ into his sets, but equally wants to educate as well as entertain the crowd, gently pushing them into unexpected territory.

This year, I w ill mostly be‌ We take a spurious look at what some local and international DJs might be planning for 2014‌ Warning: This is not true. This is ironic/sarcastic. Please do not take them seriously

Steve Aoki These questions weren’t on my rider, who are you, and where are my organic, llama quilted socks and inflatable raft for my gig? Deadmau5 I will escalate the EDM live visual arms race by giving every clubber their own set of fireworks at my gig for them to set off at their favourite breakdown. Should be epic! Break DJ Lobito I’ll definitely invest in some DJ lessons this year and get my scratching down, actually I hear DJ Cowboy is good so I might try him out… Ricardo Villalobos I might actually make an overseas gig in 2014. Nah, who am I kidding. More medicine please nurse! David Guetta Man, I really need to interact with the camera more often. Maybe I should try that hand heart symbol this year… Marko Smokingroove I’ll get more involved in social media in 2014, been a bit slack on the promo front in recent times. Nile Rodgers 2014 is definitely the year I start collaborating more. Jamie Jones Enough of being the gentleman. I’m going to finally give in to the groupie pressure, and maybe take one home for a kiss’n’cuddle after my set.

Eats Everything I will stop taking my name so literally. Tim Kay This year I will stop taking pictures of my cultural activities around the UAE and take more pictures of yacht parties, Champagne bottles and models. Avicii I will give back the 15 year old’s face mask that I wear in public and reveal myself to be none other than Pete Tong. Richie Hawtin Been toying with the idea of growing my asymmetrical hair so long that I can tuck it up the other side and create a hair beard. Anything to distract me from the same set I’ve been playing for the last 15 years. Mark Pickup 2014 will be the year I finally make the transformation to a full-time Vanilla Ice look-a-like. Raxon My eyebrows will achieve vertical lift off and begin their own orbit around the Earth.

Judge Jules 2014 will be the year I finally retire from the game and go back to being a lawyer. Oh hang on, didn’t I retire already? Does anyone actually care? Afrojack I might let the success go to my head this year and start working with Paris Hilton, in between boinking her in my studio. Charl Chaka Start smoking more Shisha. 1 behind the decks and 1 at my VIP table just isn’t cutting it anymore. To keep up my street cred 2014 will see me have 1 waiting for me at the urinal, 1 at the bar and 1 built into my dash board for the drive home. DJ W@nker I will get to the DJ Magazine Number 1 spot this year, I’ve got the finest hackers rupees can buy, it’s virtually mine. Lee Foss I will try and crack a smile when I’m DJing and in my press pictures. No promises though. Andy Buchan Play less gigs. After a hectic schedule of 1 gig in 2013, I might try and strip things back a bit. Armin Van Buuren 2014 might be the year I finally start my trance cult. I’ve already got the Jesus poses and white clothing down.

YES Competition: We have 2 pairs of tickets to give away to Reggae Beach Fest III, head to infusion.ae to enter!

Reggae Beachfest is back for its third installment, and they’re bringing over chart-topping reggae star Dawn Penn, the original artist behind ‘You Don’t Love Me (No No No)’. Not only that, but they’re celebrating Bob Marley’s birthday with a 13 hour party at XL Beach club with a Reggae brunch, 10 DJs including Dany Neville, and loads more…

Congratulations on a long lasting career – what’s been the secret to your success? I’m asking myself do I have a secret? I would say after 1993 when my career resurged, I made every effort to get in contact with The Alpha and Omega to direct my steps because I needed help to stay focused. I have no regrets and life on this planet amounts to who you have in your corner to make it. It is a learning curve. My motto: “Serve God and Live.” Your track ‘You Don’t Love Me (No No No)’ has been covered by many different people – what’s your favourite cover? Of all the versions I would want to congratulate Eve who was the first artist to cover my signature song. I must big them up too, they have given the song longevity although it has now given me feedback that I’m a one hit wonder. Although I have seven albums, five are on my label Da-Beat Limited. We read that you originally got paid $1000 for recording ‘You Don’t Love Me.’ Are you still getting royalties to this day for the track? I got paid J$1,200 for the Steelie & Cleavie’s worldwide version that has put me in 60 countries. I’m getting some royalties. Most of the royalties

are going to other people. A collecting agency are trying to get a half of my royalties forever with a one page contract that has no ending date and they say they don’t want it to stop, that makes me smile. You have a new single coming out this year – what’s been the biggest change in the music industry since you started? I have an album “Never Hustle The Music” and a single with the same title plus the follow-up track “Looking For A Lion”. I have a dub-steppas/ funky-house single “City Life”. No music is sold in the shops anymore it’s all about downloads. The industry has taken another trend as regards Branding the artist including clothing lines, perfumes, the voice on autotune and whatever else they can find to sell alongside the artist’s music. And what should people in Dubai expect from your set when you play in February? I shall be singing some Ska, Rocksteady, Standard Rhythms and some new music. Reggae Beachfest III, Saturday February 8, XL Beach Club, 2pm-3am, ladies free entry before 6pm, 052 993 4276 for bookings.

Ladies fir

A rising electronic star, and one of Brazil’s best musical exports with releases on Toolroom and Tronic, D-Edge resident Anna makes her Middle East debut at audio tonic’s deep house session on Friday January 31

There seem to be a lot of Brazilian DJs on the scene now including you and Wehhba. Is it a sign that your club culture is thriving? Yes, the electronic music scene has become very popular in Brazil over the last couple of years, we have some of the best clubs in the world, huge festivals, and of course, DJs and producers that are starting to become recognized worldwide, not to mention the newcomers that have started to break out of the local market.

rst

The eyes of the world will be on Brazil next year with the World Cup and then the

Olympics – what do you think they’ll see? Well, people of Brazil are very welcoming, but I’m not very confident the airports in Brazil are ready to receive millions of tourists. They can’t handle the regular traffic, any inconvenience that appears

turns into chaos, when it rains in Sao Paulo the city literally stops. The traffic is chaotic, there’s no sufficient subway network and any sort of public transportation for that matter, and from what I’ve been seeing, every major construction site is far from being ready in time for The World Cup. But I hope for the best. What was your path into dance music and DJing? I fell in love with electronic music very early on when I started joining my father when he would go record shopping as he was also a DJ and a club owner. Every week he would buy dozens of records, going from shop to shop and checking out every new release, and I was always with him. Soon after that I started to DJ, first at his club, and then on to playing all over Brazil. I was still under age so my mother had to travel with me until I turned 18, it’s been around 13 years since I’ve started doing this, and now I’m starting to tour worldwide. We’ve heard amazing things about clubs like Warung and D-Edge in Brazil, have you played there, if so what are they like? I’ve never played at Warung, but I used to be a resident DJ at D-Edge, it’s a wonderful club,

with an amazing sound system, and it’s the kind of club where you can play whatever you want, experiment as much as you want, and the crowd will go for it and will be open to experimenting with you. What’s your plan for world domination in 2014? I’ll be touring a lot, so I have very limited time in the studio, but I have already some releases lined up for the first half of the year, including a remix from Green Velvet of my track “Unique”, which I’m super excited about. And for the second half of the year I’m planning my debut album, so all of my available time has been injected into this project right now. You’ve been DJing for 12 years now, how has your sound changed during that time? And what has making music brought to your sets? I’ve played and experimented with a lot of styles, I started with drum ‘n’ bass, went through progressive house until I finally landed on house and techno. And since then the changes in my sets have kind of followed the changes in those kinds of music in general, going from a harder sound to a more polished, groove oriented style. I think the music is constantly changing, and you need to be open-minded in order to adjust to those changes, otherwise you get left behind. My sets have gained more personality and a stronger identity, I try to play at least 50% of my own stuff, I think people normally like to see the artist playing their music live. Audio tonic feat. DJ Anna, Friday January 31, 360, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, 4pm-3am, free entry, guestlist only via platinumlist.ae from 4-8pm

Music News... Paris pool party

April 1st isn’t for a few more months, but it seems Paris Hilton has got in there early after reports surfaced that she’s signed up a $100,000 nightly DJing deal at Atlantic City in America. Playing at The Pool at Harrah’s casino, the property heiress will no doubt be dropping big name electro from the likes of Avicii and Afrojack, while becoming one of the world’s best paid DJs in the process. Don’t know about you, but we just did a little bit of sick in our mouth.

Ministry of Sound remains open

Long-running London club Ministry of Sound have reached an agreement with the developers of a nearby housing block ensuring the legendary club remains open. The agreement means the club can “continue to make the current levels of noise without fear of complaint from future residents of the development,” ensuring the safety of the club. MOS Chief Executive said: “This is a significant planning breakthrough for London, setting a precedent for how new housing and existing businesses can live together. We are grateful to the Mayor for his efforts and look forward to welcoming our new neighbours to the area.” They’re celebrating with a forthcoming line up including Kenny Dope, Markus Schulz, Basement Jaxx, Fedde Le Grand and more.

Album Reviews... Angel Haze – Dirty Gold Hip hop

I www.angelhazemusic.com



Call it the impetuosity of youth, call it label politics, but there’s no doubt that when Angel Haze leaked her debut album a full 3 months before the official release, there were serious ramifications. For one thing, her much hyped release sold less than 1,000 copies in its first week, a disaster for her record label Universal. And the fall out has dominated reviews (like this one), taking away the focus from Dirty Gold. Which isn’t, as it turns out, a huge shame. When the 22 year old Detroit born rapper first burst on the scene, she did so with a defiant, machine-gun flow and boasting an interesting back story (she was raised in what she called a religious cult, with hip hop and pop banned until she was 16). And while there are fresh battle cries on Dirty Gold – notably the fierce ‘White Lillies/White Lies,’ and ‘Black Synagogue’ – it sounds too derivative, too formatted, too formulaic. Which doesn’t make it a bad album – it’s poppy, with some personality, but it ‘s not the album that the hype and talent deserved.

Macromism – Superheroes (Tronic) House/Techno

I



tronicmusic.com

Dance music producers, largely speaking, have two options when they decide to create an album. They either explore their music roots, often making a more downtempo album with a few token house tracks, or they create a near seamless collection of beats’n’bass bangers. Tronic’s Macromism, a young Italian duo, have gone for the latter. And their minimal, stripped back techno works nicely across the 15 tracks. While there is a slight lack of variety - it can feel very one-paced - there are nice changes in atmosphere: ‘Wall To Wall’ and ‘Stars And Stripes’ are infectious slices of bare-bones funk, while the sparse outer space computer squelch of ‘Left, Hand, Back’ is nicely off-kilter. And if you’re looking for techno bangers, look no further than ‘Take Control,’ ‘Bagul’ and ‘Gabor’ which are all high intensity techno workouts.

Indie I kingkrule.co.uk



King Krule sounds familiar, with echoes of The Smiths, John Martyn and Jeff Buckley floating throughout, all sad but beautiful influences that King Krule has updated. With thoughtful lyrics full of wisdom, and a voice that belies his age (he’s 19), King Krule has been making waves in his native UK for a while now. We might be a little slow bringing you this review, as it originally dropped back in August last year, but with simple but highly effective chord structures, The xx style back beats and stand out tracks like ‘Border Line’ and lead single ‘Easy Easy’, it’s a beautiful album that you shouldn’t miss out on.

‘Gallatin Ave’ is a highway in East Nashville. It is not a glamorous part of town. Hardly anyone walks the streets except for the homeless pushing shopping trolleys. The blocks are long, the pavement is cracking and the strip is a mixture of Wing Shacks (fried chicken joints), Baptist churches and hyper-markets. But man does it have soul. As the more bohemian side of town (for bohemian insert ‘rough’), over the years it has become home to artists, musicians and actors whom can afford to become first home owners in the area. Increasingly studio spaces pop up, as well as art initiatives carried on the energy of the idealistic, DIY ethic of its new wave of inhabitants. Just a few miles from the bright lights of the tourist/hen-night filled honkey tonks of downtown, this is a part of Nashville where you feel close to the beating heart of ‘real’ Nashvillian life. The recording of Gallatin was my fourth trip to Nashville, and from my first taste back in 2006 I knew I wanted to make a record here. To follow in the footsteps of those whom had been before; Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan. Here the songwriter is still king. Over the years

of pilgrimage to Tennessee, chance meetings led to chance meetings that led to the circumstances that made making this record possible. A friend I made at an open mic introduced me to their friend who had a history of putting up travellers passing through town. In the summer of 2012, that friend’s fiancé had a room spare that I could stay in. It was here on an inflatable Walmart mattress that I slept for 5 of the most challenging/ exhausting/gruelling/satisfying weeks of my life. Working tirelessly in the studio 6 days a week (Sunday off so the engineer so could go to church and spend time with his new baby), I didn’t see much more than microphones and guitar amps. But the one thing connecting the bed where I slept and the studio I worked from was Gallatin Avenue that I would walk or get a ride down every day. It was the backdrop to my script, where I took respite in cafes between sessions, went dancing at the ‘5 Spot’ to James Brown on a random Monday night off or sat out on the porch and sang songs at night to the fireflies after sessions. Over time I could feel the vibe of East Nashville starting to seep into me, a southern inflection creeping into my accent,

choosing gravy and scones over pancakes at a breakfast joint, and adopting an ‘us vs the world’ attitude when producing in the studio. I’d say to the musicians; ‘we’ve got nobody here but our selves. There ain’t no suits to please, no hit single we have to follow up. All we’ve got to do is make great music, and if we get to the edge of the cliff let’s not back away from it, but follow our gut and leap across it. Let's take that risk artistically.’ This is what ‘Gallatin’ represents for me. Capturing the essence, the substance, the energy of the music we made in that house that summer. Not needing to rely on big money, crowd funding, comfort, record label. Getting up and going to work tirelessly, to make art. To get it done as best as you can with the resources you’ve got, and then when you’re done, to learn from your mistakes and move onto the next project and do it better.

1. Chasing Down A Dream

Written on a plane flying from Nashville to Dubai It’s about giving every thing you have to go after your dreams, and loving the process of the journey this creates. It’s a song that celebrates lifelong adventure and rock n roll. It’s a personal statement “I’m doing what I was born to do, I’m at home on the road making music

and I’m loving it”. ‘Guitar sharks on every corner’, is a reference to the great musicianship in Nashville.

2. You Bring Me Down

Written in L.A. About my experience of working with the entertainment industry, which seemed much more concerned with taking advantage of artists to make a quick buck than to support the creation of art. Consumption over substance; ‘boy forget guitar, all you need is a look, a lawyer who wears gold and my accountant on your book’.

3. In The Village

Written in Dubai This song is a little observation of a place very close to my heart. ‘In the village, everybody got themselves a maid’.

4. Travelling Song

Written in California, Portugal and London This song is my mantra, my calling card. It captures the excitement of being on the road with a couple songs in your pocket, some optimism in your heart and the open road ahead of you.

5. Lafayette

Written in New Orleans I drove across America from San Diego to Atlanta one summer. It was a great road trip; I was with my best friend/

drummer Mark Spark, and we had no plan other than to have an adventure. Along the way we just asked locals where we should go to find the hottest music joints in town. One night someone directed us to ‘The Blue Moon Saloon’ in Lafayette, Louisiana and the next day I woke up in New Orleans with the main melody stuck in my head. I fell in love with the Cajun/Zydeco music there

6. Polaroid Memories

Written in L.A. I was living with three artists in Beverley Hills. One of them had a gold polaroid camera, and she’d snap away as we painted, made music and dreamed big dreams on crazy nights out in Hollywood.

7. Christmas Eve

Written in Dubai A ballad. A black and white romance. Washing your lover’s hair. Drinking tea whilst eating ice-creams on the beach. Falling in love.

8. Out Of Touch

Written in San Diego, London, Nashville A cheeky shuffle tune, that was a great experience to record. All of the musicians were playing live in this big old wooden house, and we got the take on the album in a very short period of time, maybe 2nd or 3rd cut. This was the last song we

recorded during the ‘Gallatin’ sessions, recorded on the very last day.

9. The Sun

Written in San Diego, Nashville The only instrumental track on the record. It has had lyrics in the past, and it has been arranged in many different ways, though I really love the hip hop inspired groove this track took, as well as the lead guitar tone. One interesting part of recording it was that we took away all of the drums except the kick, snare and hi-hat so that it has a really stripped back feel.

10. Wandering Really Takes Its Toll On You

Written in Hamburg I started writing this song about a friend of mine whom I was on tour with in Europe at the time. He found touring quite hard going at times, and so the title was born ‘wandering really takes its toll on you’. However, as I crafted the song, it actually turned out to reflect more about myself because I’ve basically been travelling my whole life. I love the bittersweet ending ‘but it’s all I ever learned to do, it takes its toll on you’. Gallatin is available now at Virgin. facebook.com/timhassallmusic Catch Tim in store at Virgin MOE on Feb 20th, 7-9pm

DJ Booth: Kasparov

A diverse DJ, with residencies at Sunny Vibe Up, Breakin’ Even and Superheroes, we get to grips with Kasparov…

One thing you might not know about me is… I played the baby in the 1980s family adventure film Willow. I also later played the hand in the Adams Family. They filmed a lot of those scenes in a studio in Bristol. I got paid 7 grand! My worst ever job was… Working in a chicken farm. On one occasion I decided to put a dying hen out of her misery, which ended with the classic headless chicken running around. Not a fun experience. My favorite ever record is… I cannot answer this. There are too many! DJing is much like… Having a naughty sibling. We have good and bad days, but we are stuck with each other now. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Really healthy. Right across the board we have promoters taking risks and booking great and sometimes challenging artists. The underground and local DJ community is strong - something I didn’t expect to see when I moved here. Also coming from the UK, it is really refreshing to see people going off with nothing more than a few drinks inside them. I’m really proud of… A couple of my mates back home, who had a dream to create “The UK’s maddest city”. And in just 4 years they took a small annual local fair into a 40,000 + capacity music event. Boomtown Fair. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Probably playing at Glastonbury Festival in the UK for almost a decade now. Plus playing the Arcadia Spectacular (a huge exploding mechanical monster of a stage that tours festivals). Look it up on Youtube, it’s bonkers. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… The 80s. Hip Hop and Acid House cultures were both making huge and all inclusive waves. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… We Don’t Play & TSEX (my crew from the UK), but out here in Dubai, in the sun. Maybe on a yacht. Can we hook that up? I’m not a politician but… I can still tell a good lie or two when I want to. soundcloud.com/kasparov www.facebook.com/clubbeats

Soundstage

Dubai born rapper N1yah is the latest signing to the DJ Bliss team, and thanks to her recent My Name Is N1yah mixtape, one to watch

My music is… My freedom. The best thing about Dubai’s music scene is… That it’s still on the rise and I would like to be one of the reasons behind putting Dubai’s hip hop scene on the international map. The worst thing is… Because it’s still on the rise, some people do not take talents out here seriously, but I think if more and more people help us spread the word about local talents, that will give them more exposure and encourage others to come out and showcase what they’ve got. My best gig was… The Dubai Mall Vogue Fashion event. Being part of the Bliss family is… Challenging and motivating to always think and do better. The artist I most look up to is… Bob Marley, he was what I like to call a peaceful rebel. Being called the ‘Nicky Minaj of the Middle East’ is… I’m grateful that people actually believe I have what it takes to make it that big. I respect Nicky Minaj’s hustle in the rap game. We may have similar ambitions but I think we are two different artists and my aim is to build my own image in the scene. My guilty musical pleasure is… As an artist, I’m expected to listen to any type of music and I don’t think of anything I listen to as a guilty pleasure. I recall enjoying listening to Fairuz in the early morning back in school days, but I don’t know if that is considered as a guilty musical pleasure. I’m happiest when… The people I care about are happy or proud of me. My first musical influence was… MTV. What’s the one thing you’d like to request on your rider… To make sure that I have the right facilities to play music wherever I am. Good music will keep me and everyone around me happy and of course being happy is all I need to enjoy anything I’m doing. Or a good big cup of French Vanilla from Tim Hortons. facebook.com/N1yah

Weird News... Boy meets Boy?

Heard the one about the boy and the girl, who both swapped genders so they could be with each other? Well, Katie Hill, born Luke, and Arin Andrews, born Emerald, fell in love with each other while going through their gender transitions in Oaklahoma, the heart of the US’s bible belt. But having made the full switch, the couple are now splitting up. Arin said: ‘The real reason is that we are just growing up and we need to focus more on ourselves instead of our relationship.”

This week we had the opportunity to meet Drusilla, Dubai's latest smallscale Style Icon, Nudist-Alopecia Spokesperson, local figurehead and full-time muse, currently doing a longterm artist's residency across the city. Despite a busy schedule of posing across the emirate, she's taken time out of her hectic day to answer a few questions about the city she now calls home.

Beats by

Dru

Firstly, Drusilla, tell us what brought you to this fair city. Two things. First, I was like, looking for my next project, to figure out the character of a place and let it mold my nature, till the two are inseparable, yah? OK? But second, this dude called Ling put me in a box and I ended up at Dragonmart. Please can you explain the concept to us behind Drusilladoesdubai? I got the idea from my friend Debbie in Dallas. She and her buddies had such a good time documenting that city and I thought Dubai could benefit from the same positive vibes. You know, celebrating all the long, impressive structures this city has to offer. But I’m also excited about how many different sides there are to this town. Like, Satwa is a whole other world from Tecom, and sticking a naked mannequin bust, me, in front of it all, is a fun project, yeah.

And what is it that you like about Dubai? I have a really long neck, yah. And the buildings here are really long too. We have that in common. If they were, like, to make a giant tower block in my shape, I think that would be a valuable addition to the EXPO landscape in 2020. They could put a cocktail lounge in my nose. That’s very accommodating of you. You were invited to talk at the Emirates Photographers Forum… why didn’t you go? I get stage fright because I don’t have a voice box, and people are uncomfortable with silence. And what can we expect from future projects? I’ve got a couple of sponsorships on the way from skincare brands, but at the minute, if you turn me upside down I make a really good bongo drum so I think they’re going to be having me take part in a few gigs as well. Well thanks for giving us your time Drusilla. Sounds like you’re very busy. I am. That’s right. instagram.com/drusilladoesdubai

Why did the hipster burn his tongue? Because he drank it before it was cool. Hipsters, eh? Grade A douche bags if you ask me. But if it hadn’t been for the hipster redtrouseras as the Latin goes, then we wouldn’t have these things to thank them for… Beards. Long beards, ginger beards, smelly beards, moles and voles nestling in beards beards. Unnecessary, every single one. Shuffling. Hipsters don’t dance, they don’t get excited for fear their Top Man quiff will fall out of place. They shuffle like zombies with M.E, stroking their beards. As the Latin name indicates, they wear read trousers, while shuffling and stroking their beard. And spermocidally tight trousers at that. Our favourite though is when hipsters develop later in life, only coming to the hipster party when, naturally, the hipsters have sold all their guitars and bought decks (LCD Soundsystem hipster reference, non-hipsters). The look of disdain on the original hipster’s faces is priceless, or it would be if you could see it through their over-sized, horn-rimmed NHS specs. Losers. Monkey Out...
