To say that Dubai is ‘back’ is an understatement – after a subdued couple of years, the city’s club and gig scene has exploded back into life in 2012, bringing out an impressive array of talent. New clubs have opened, bigger and better DJs and bands have flown out and one-day festivals have grown to become every weekend occurences. And that strength and variety is represented in the NYE line up – from Atelier’s huge line up featuring Snoop Dogg, Faithless and Armand Van Helden to Sandance’s typically large offering including Paul Van Dyk and Ellie Goulding, to club gigs hosting Crazy P, Inland Knights, Yves La Rock, Harry ‘Choo Choo’ Romero, Hot Creations and Hed Kandi, there’s no shortage of big events to welcome in 2013, which promises to be even bigger and better than 2012. Happy New Year from the Infusion team. Andy

Tom Middleton @ audio tonic

Audio tonic welcomed back house veteran Tom Middleton to celebrate his two recent remixes for the label. Gracing the decks with his signature beard and hat, he played a mix of new and old music that anyone walking into 360 could appreciate whether they were a house head or not. Always equipped with a microphone to keep the crowd updated throughout the night, he kept everyone on the dance floor wondering what track he’d drop next. It was a beautiful night and the dance floor was packed as he played the closing set from 11 to 2. With such a good vibe, Tristan Bain kept things going in true audio tonic style and closed out the 2nd room downstairs until 3am, making this a night to remember.

Looking Back Marcus Intalex @ ill Communications, N’Dulge Bassheads have never had it so good, with Goldie, Patife, Black Sun Empire, Thelem and Andy C all hitting our shores in the space of a few weeks. Whether there’s room for all the nights to flourish is open to question, but the N’Dulge terrace got the bass season off to a great start, with local heroes Mach 4 and Somalie joined by MC Prit on the warm up before Marcus and the scene’s current golden boy SP:MC embarked on a 2 hour journey taking in everything from the classic Capone track ‘Friday’ to plenty of soon-to-be-classic material. And it wasn’t just the bassheads who were out in force and enjoying the 170BPM beats, as the bar staff – and one guy old enough to be our dad – were seen getting down and dirty to the big beats. And word on the street is there’s more to come from iLL Communications on the drum and bass tip next season, happy happy days.

Metro Area @ The Music Room

We said it would be one of the best nights of the year when we interviewed one half or Metro Area, Darshan Jesrani, ahead of the gig, and so it proved to be, as the nu-disco pioneer turned in a mesmerizing set, culminating in MA’s still shuddering ‘Miura.’ Before then, the New York native had delved deep into his disco, boogie and house collection, with the stand out track Todd Terje’s ‘Inspector Norse.’ And the Music Room and DUST supporters were out in force as the alternative night waved goodbye to 2012. They might have lost a couple of founding members in recent times, but Megadon Betamax and James Locksmith will be back with more good times at DUST next year, for which we’re very grateful.

Local News Kanye vs Slash

Flash have opened up their 2013 gig account, and in some style, as they’ve announced Kanye West – he of the big mouth, and the even bigger talent – plays on Yas Island on Thursday January 31. Not to be outdone, Dubai has matched the booking, as the ex-Guns’n’Roses axe-man Slash performs live with his band at the Dubai Tennis Stadium on the same night.

Nu Disco Dubai While nu-disco has arguably become the buzz word in dance music recently, one of the scene’s original pioneers is heading out to Dubai on Thursday January 24. Pat Mahoney (left in the picture) is an integral part of DFA Records, and also the drummer from LCD Soundsystem, and one of the original nu-disco players, and plays the Tiger Translate night at the Media One hotel alongside Seiji, formerly of Bugz In The Attic.

Musichall to open The Musichall is one of Beirut’s stand-out venues, and is now set to open a sister venue in the Jumeirah Zabeel Saray on January 17. Originally opened in the early 2000s, the Musichall in Beirut combines the dinner and dance formula with an impressive array of bookings, covering rock, reggae, jazz, Arabic and Latino. Looking Forward No.1 Fridays move home

They quickly packed out their weekly nights at N’Dulge, but No.1 Fridays, the long-running urban night is on the move again – although fans will be pleased they’re not straying far from their previous Palm address having taken up residency at the Rixos. While they might lose N’Dulge’s club atmosphere, their new beach venue means they can start the party earlier (things now kick off at 7pm) and you can dance under the stars on the sand.

Rumours

Flo Rida has been added to XL’s NYE line up. An 80s festival, including Rick Astley, Heaven 17 and ABC, will take place next March at Festival City. The World Top DJs event has been postponed until January.

WINNERS 2012 – it’s been a massive year for Infusion, with bigger magazines, a brand new website set to launch, sell out events and a brand new DJ booth in the office. Here’s to next year being even better! Big films in 2012: Argo, The Hobbit, The Imposter, Moonrise Kingdom, Looper, The Avengers, Skyfall, Life of Pi and Cabin in the Woods were some of our favourites. It’s been a good year for new clubs and bars opening (probably a record year), but we’d still like to see a little more grit and realism in the city, anyone willing to step up to the plate on a weekly basis?

Losers Dodgy promoters who promise the earth (ahem, Deadmau5) and then hastily back-track on their promises. Festival organisers. It’s been a ridiculously busy year for one-day festivals, and not all have been busy, who’ll be bringing out the big guns in 2013? Haters. The only beef you should be having is with a side of chunky chips, why not try going vegetarian in 2013 and living life instead, eh?

Goodbye 2012, Hello2013! Alchemy Project have been behind some of the biggest gigs of the last year, and their NYE bash is their biggest yet as Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz Sound System, Faithless, Armand Van Helden, Inna and September all perform live at Meydan. Ahead of their monumental December 31 bash, we delved deeper into the murky history of the Gorillaz… 7 things you never knew about Gorillaz 1. While they might be the biggest virtual band in the world, Gorillaz' creators Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewett initially didn’t like each other, with Hewett calling the Blur frontman ‘arsey.’ They put their differences aside and became good friends, with Albarn creating the music and Hewett, a comic-book star and the man behind Tank Girl, creating the visuals.

2. The band came about when

the pair were watching MTV: ‘If you watch it for too long, it’s a bit like hell – there’s nothing of substance there. So we got this idea for a cartoon band, something that would be a comment on that,” Hewlett said.

3. There are 4 members of

the ‘band:’ 2D, lead vocalist, keyboard and melodica, Murdoc Niccals, bass and drum machine, Noodle, guitar, keyboard and vocals and Russel Hobb on drums and percussion. Between them

they’ve sold over 15 million albums, outselling Albarn’s original band Blur.

4. While Albarn won’t be present for the Gorillaz Sound System show, it’s still an incredible performance with 1 DJ, a drummer, a percussionist and a visual director, with tracks edited, remixed and mashed up live at every show. 5. And they come with the fully endorsed backing of the band: “G.S.S. are the only people I’d trust to entertain my amigos apart from myself. The way I

look at it, this is kinda like the Pope giving his blessing to another parish. And anyway I can’t get the records out of those little paper cases, my nails are too long.” Murdoc Niccals, Satanist Svengali and bass slayer of Gorillaz.

6. While Albarn is the sole

continual member of the band, he’s worked with some of the best in the business to create his hip hop meets electronica soundtrack, including Danger Mouse and Del Tha Funky Homosapien on beats duty, and a wide range of guest

vocalists including Lou Reed, Mos Def, Mark E. Smith and the Happy Monday’s Shaun Ryder. Eclectic to say the least.

7. Gorillaz are sadly on hiatus at the moment – Albarn and Hewitt are currently working on other projects – meaning this is the best chance you’ll get to hear their classic cuts like ‘Dirty Harry,’ ‘DARE,’ and ‘Superfast Jellyfish’ live. Atelier Festival, Meydan Racecourse, Monday January 31, 5pm-4am, Dhs400, theatelierworld.com

Ramraid

While DJ Fresh, Goldie, Chase & Status and the rest might try and lay claim to the title, RAM Records’ head honcho Andy C is the biggest DnB DJ in the world. And luckily enough for Dubai’s clubbers, he returns to the city on Thursday January 10 thanks to Globalfunk RAM Records recently celebrated their 20th birthday – was there a 'pinch yourself moment' during the celebration? Most definitely. I never, ever thought we would still be here today doing what we’re doing but then again I never really thought about what I’d be doing 20 years into the future. It is surreal when you think about it, but I feel Ram is in the strongest position it’s ever been in and we have some very talented artists on board and 2013 (our 21st year) will be bigger still! And is there one record which you'll always be able to play in your sets? From the entire 20 years? It has to be 'Valley Of The Shadow' which I did with Ant Miles as Origin Unknown. The record that put Ram on the map still gets the same reaction to brand new audiences now like it did when it was first made… it’s crazy man.

You're a prodigiously talented DJ – how much of it is talent and how much is hard work? I’d like to say all talent but I’ve worked bloody hard over the years. I like to know each and everyone of my records inside out. I’m always in the studio before the weekend mixing for hours and ready. Your industry has changed so much in the past few decades, why do you think you've kept growing while others haven't? I don’t know really… a lot of hard work, relentless touring, never being satisfied and knowing that if I keep going I can still improve. I absolutely love what I do, it started out as a hobby at school, turned into a career. To be paid to DJ is truly an honour, I live, breath and sleep this music man! We chatted to DJ Fresh recently and he

mentioned he'd got some abuse for apparently 'selling out'. Do you get involved in that sort of debate? What telling Fresh he’s a sell out? Always! Nah, seriously Dan is one of my best friends and I’m very proud of his achievements. He’s an incredibly talented guy and has more than earned his stripes in underground DnB! He can turn his hand to anything in the studio at any time, so any haters should watch this space. You're playing a 600 capacity club, probably one of the more intimate you've played recently – do you prefer big crowds or tightly packed small clubs? I love performing on the big stage or at festivals but I do also like a nice intimate crowd… when it’s just dark with

a great system you can just communicate with the crowd via the beats and go on a journey together... it’s like the crowd know what’s coming in for the next tune before it comes in, or someone will hold there phone up with a request on it as I’m cueing it up. I’m not saying you don’t get this with the bigger shows, or festivals even, because you do, but when it’s in a smaller venue it’s there right in your face. And where's the most surprising place that you've found drum and bass in the world? it’s a world wide thing now so it’s hard to say. I’ve been lucky enough to visit pretty much every continent to play DnB and had so many crazy experiences. I mean just look at where we are, who would have thought that DnB would be smashing it in the UAE! Globalfunk feat. Andy C, The Music Room, Thursday January 10, 9pm-3am.

It’s been an incredible year for music – house music rediscovered its funk, dubstep blew up into the mainstream, indie and rock and roll got a much needed shot in the arm, and underground hip hop blossomed. The only downside was the inescapable rise of that ineffable blend of electro/ RnB and hip pop, its bland formula swamping the charts and commercial airwaves. But we’re here to talk about all that is good and correct in the world, so without further ado, here are the songs, albums and mixes that made 2012 a stellar year…

Music that matters

Tracks Todd Terje ‘Inspector Norse’ Omnipresent nu-disco banger that crossed over into virtually every record bag. Blawan - ‘Why They Hide Their Bodies Under My Garage’ Dark, brooding, but utterly captivating garage-meets-techno hybrid.

Julio Bashmore ‘Au Seve’ Another mammoth slice of bass magic from the UK producer.

Albums/ Mixes

Jessie Ware - ‘Running’ (Disclosure Remix) Gorgeous slice of future-pop with drop dead vocals and silky smooth beats.

Scuba Personality Widescreen techno and future beats, as bold and innovative as it was emotional. A complete dance music album.

Bicep - ‘$tripper’ Retro house, as seen through the eyes of two Irish producers who are destined for big things.

John Talabot - Fin Weird, wonderful and fully alive sounding electronic album that blended nudisco, acid and house to dazzling effect.

Palma Violets – Best of Friends The shot of indie adrenaline the scene needed, provided by the hotly tipped UK four piece.

Tame Impala - Lonerism The best psychedelic album for the past 30 years, and one of the best albums of this year, no question.

Amine Edge & Dance – ‘In Heaven With The Goodie Goodies’ Bowel-rearranging bassline and killer sample via Biggy.

Hot Chip In Our Heads

Storm Queen - ‘Let’s Make Mistakes’ Acid-tinged nu-disco meets house track with a haunting vocal from one half of Metro Area.

Yet another instant classic from the gleefully odd Hot Chip 5, once more redefining and blurring the boundaries between indie and dance.

Flying Lotus Until The Quiet Comes Astonishing beats and piece album, proving that LA’s Flying Lotus is to hip hop what Radiohead are to rock. The Vaccines - The Vaccines Come Of Age Indie pogo pop of the finest order as the hotly tipped UK band came good. XX - Coexist Proof that less is definitely more as the London trio, headed by Jamie XX on beats duty, quietly became one of the biggest bands in the world. Jack White Blunderbluss Or Jack White’s ‘Look At Me’ moment, as he channeled the best of his extensive backcatalogue into a dazzling, guitar-frenzied workout. Dub Pistols - Worshipping The Dollar Festival – and Dubai – favourites, The Dub Pistols reinterpreted their dub/reggae template to include drum and bass to impressive effect.

Solomun - Watergate 11 Arguably the most hyped and in-demand DJ at the moment after a momentous first season in Ibiza, this was the sound of his slowed down, infectious nu-disco and deep house caught at one of the world’s best clubs. Frank Ocean Channel Orange This might be the most un-Def Jam album the respected label has ever put out, and for that we’re very thankful as Ocean’s debut is a stunning mix of on-point lyrics and heartfelt melodies. Maya Jane Coles DJ Kicks It’s not always easy to live up to the hype, but Maya’s debut DJ Kicks mix delivered as she went through house, techno, dubstep and garage with ease. Andrew Weatherall Masterpiece Slow is the new fast at the moment, and there’s no finer DJ when it comes to stripped back BPMs as this sprawling and aptly named 3 CD mix proved.

Best of the

rest

Top five Indie tracks of 2012 by Miriam Sweeney

Everything Everything Cough Cough The Manchester four piece toned down the crazy long enough to make this spectacular math-rock track. Alt J - Something Good Winners of the 2012 Mercury music prize, Alt-J justified their success with this subtle, floaty track. Kodaline - All I Want Melancholy and melody from the Dublin band, an uncomplicated lament about loneliness and longing. The Cribs - Chi Town The Jarman brothers returned, minus Johnny Marr, with this trademark low-fi/90s ode to messy, feckless nights on tour. Spector - Friday Night Bespectacled and ironic, the much-hyped hipsters came through, with a soaring chorus that’s destined to become an indie dance floor staple.

A varied selection by Gareth Davies

Best Radio Show Benji B (BBC Radio One / Deviation) Simply the UK’s (and maybe the world’s) finest musical tastemaker. It will take something to knock Benji of his throne. (Maybe Alex Nut’s show on Rinse FM?) Best Breakthrough Track Jessie Ware - Running One of those tunes that when you hear it you immediately go ‘Track of the year.’ Don’t think I’ve said that about any other. So Jessie… you win! Best House Players BICEP (Feel my Bicep) From blogging powerhouses to almost single handedly reviving the mid 90s house and garage sound, all done with a touch of muscular humour. And who doesn’t love muscles. Best Bassline TNGHT - Bugg’n (Hudson Mohawke x Lunice) Really though, this is just plain sick. The thing I love about this new hip hop sound is everyone still bounces to it. I guess that’s what a good bassline will do to any party.

We caught up with FD head honcho Sean Brosnan… What was the biggest news story in your world? I guess it was a few weeks ago when my record label Needwant was nominated for the best British label of 2012 in DJ Magazine. For all of us that work on the label it was a big deal that people are noticing what’s happening. What’s been the dominating fashion? Sound wise I think the 90s. It’s where I’m from musically also so it’s natural and easy to get along with, maybe that’s why this year has been a good one, because my tastes fit with the fashion. What’s been your highlight of the year? I think some of the Future Disco parties at space in Ibiza. There were moments across the 10 or 11 parties we did, where you were like ‘wow’ this really is special. You almost want to bottle it and take it home, but I guess that’s the same reason people keep coming back there. Who’s going to be the star of 2013? I think Waze & Odssesy will be big next year, Cosmic Kids from LA and George Fitzgerald form London. There are so many rising stars in Dance music these days it’s hard to pick. Dance music in 2013 will be... separated from EDM. I don’t think of them as the same thing, dance music as I know it is about dark rooms, DJs, collecting records, appreciating musical history, people sharing a great experience. I hope Dance music can regain that.

There were a lot of smashing hits this year, but if I would have to pick one: Burns – Lies, the Otto Knows remix. What’s been the dominating fashion? Rave sounds and wearing a moustache... Who’s going to be the star of 2013? Trisha, she’s a new DJ/singer/ producer, and in my opinion a very talented artist. If you got to play the midnight tune, what would you drop? I think “Rise up”, always brings a smile on people’s face.

What’s been your biggest track this year? My own track ‘Radio G’. Both Night mix and Day mix which covers the driving electro and techno side of things respectively. What’s been the dominating fashion? Musically speaking there are 2 forces at work right now, more trancey, synth sound with electro infused house, and deep house with big basslines. Just like fashion music comes back and right now we have seen a great influx of creative music from both sides of the game. Who’s going to be the star of 2013? As a DJ, Seth Troxler has been mind blowing for me. He has a very creative and outside of the box style of spinning that I can really appreciate and enjoy.

John Probyn, chief operating officer of Live Nation UK suggests ‘increasingly picky’ revellers are one of the key factors affecting Britain’s increasingly competitive festival scene.

Deadmau5 Dismisses DJ Sneak

Canadian Electro star Joel Zimmerman (AKA Deadmau5) has insisted he ‘don’t care’ about the relentless stream of Twitter criticism he attracts from the likes of DJ Sneak, branding the Twitter loving anti-EDM zealot a Luddite. “With DJ Sneak we’re talking about this guy who comes in today, 20 years later, and says, f*** all this s***, it isn’t real house music! Yes, we know, it was a 909 and an old sample, great, ” he told Billboard’s editorial director Bill Werde during an interview at the FutureSound conference “Do you go down the river to beat your clothes on a rock and hate on me for using a washing machine,” he scoffed. Sneak, meanwhile, turned his attention towards Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJ poll, dismissing it as a ‘hype chart more than a buzz chart’, despite appearing at 83 in the influential tech-house poll. Singled out by RA for ‘getting into in a lot of beef—literally and figuratively’ in 2012 as well as ‘more importantly. . . keeping up the thumping house style that made him famous’, Sneak nevertheless appeared angry at his placing, dismissing props from fellow veteran Derrick May.

DJ Booth: Markii

Head down to Sho Cho on a Tuesday to hear deep house DJ Markii in action‌

One thing you might not know about me is... That I manage 2 lives: one is my daytime job in Media and the other would be DJing. It can be tough sometimes, but I really enjoy and love doing both. My worst ever job was... Nothing really! I have enjoyed everything I’ve done so far. My favourite ever record is... Martin Buttrich “Meeting Dave Dish.” It puts me in a good mood at any place and time. DJing is much like... Art. Once you’ve got the talent, dedication, vision, and what it takes, then you have definitely made it. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Improving a lot with the existence of local talent, producers, and well-educated promoters that are really working hard to keep on delivering good quality music. I’m really proud of... Being successful at both my day time job as well as my passion which is music and showcasing it to people out there. If I could change one thing about anything it would be... Cheesy music in some of the venues in town. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Being given the opportunity to spin at most venues around the city, and recently the F1 weekend at YAS island. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The Disco days back in the 70s. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Tough one! I would have to say Solomun due to his style, energy, as well as track selection which I feel would really suit my kind of music. I’m not a politician but... I’ve got the power to convince and get some attention. soundcloud.com/markii-1

Soundstage

Bari Versa

A London-centric, Dubai based duo, Ben Jones and Max Smoke make up this Dubai-based indie/ ska/punk band formed from the ashes of The Meerkats

How would you describe your sound? A little bit of this and a little bit of that, nice driving indie with some ska/punk twists. Being a musician in Dubai is much like... Flying the flag for a lost and long forgotten army in a land where models and DJs rule the land. My first musical influence was... We both grew up listening to the Pink Floyd, The Clash and The Jam, reggae, jazz, blues, with notable mentions for Feetwood Mac and the like. I was mad for the Britpop scene but love a bit of soul now days. That processed R&B that’s played on repeat out here needs to die though. What’s the band’s motto? Be who you are, love what you do, it’s just another chapter. You’ve all been in different bands before, what makes this one special? I’ve wanted to work with Max for a long time. Our bands were both playing on the scene back in London. We met years ago, had done gigs together in our respective bands. I’d always loved his sound but then I moved to Dubai, and years went by and we lost touch. And then I bumped into him outside a bar, it was meant to be, you can’t deny fate. The best way to get noticed in Dubai is... Be yourself, stick to your guns and make music you love playing. What’s the best gig you’ve played? Ben: Too many too mention: playing with The Charlatans was great, as were the Libertines in London. Max: Jamie T at Leeds’ Cockpit. Dubai’s music scene is... Diverse as anywhere I’ve ever been, it’s time to bring back some good old fashioned bands though. The best lyrics of all time are... ’I don’t believe in the existence of angels, but looking at you, I wonder if that’s true…’ Nick Cave, ‘In To My Arms.’

Fangs for the memories

Sales of garlic were reportedly ‘booming’ in Western Serbia this week after a local mayor warned that infamous vampire Sava Savanovic could be on the loose in Bajina Basta. Serbian mayor Miodrag Vujetic urged home-owners to put garlic and holy crosses in their windows after a decrepit water mill he was believed to haunt, collapsed disturbing the much feared bloodsucker. ‘People are worried, everybody knows the legend of this vampire and the thought that he is now homeless and looking for somewhere else and possibly other victims is terrifying people,” mayor Vujetic told reporters, “We are all frightened.

Paws for thought Judging by some of the driving displays you see on an hourly basis in Dubai, it seems as if dogs are actually behind the wheel. But one New Zealand animal welfare group has spent 8 weeks training 3 dogs to drive. After just eight weeks Porter, Monty and Ginny were put behind the wheels of an adapted Mini Cooper and reporetdly managed to put it in gear, accelerate and steer. So far, the dogs have been driving with the help of an assistant inside the car, but their next challenge is to drive solo on live television. Auckland SPCA chief Christine Kalin said: “They will hop in, start the car, put it into gear, use the accelerator. Our dream would be throughout our major cities and across Australasia will be people will be proud of owning a rescue dog.”

Life of Pi star mauls five at opening of Dubai International Film Festival DUBAI: There were embarrassed blushes at the Dubai International Film Festival last night after the star of the opening film unexpectedly mauled five guests on the red carpet. The 450-pound Bengal tiger, who plays the character Richard Parker in Ang Lee’s 3D adaptation of Life of Pi, reportedly became incensed by a camera flash while posing for photographers at the Madinat Jumeirah, pouncing on a group of festival attendees stood nearby. In the ensuing melee, three Egyptian TV stars, a Lebanese documentary maker and Morgan Freeman were savaged before the tiger’s handlers stepped in to calm the situation. The five remain in a critical state. “To be honest, we just assumed he’d been given the necessary media training to deal with such events,” said one of the organisers, before quipping, “it’s just a good job the carpet is red!” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Frak Fu

It’s the Winterwonderland Full Moon party, so we just had to find out who’s the coolest out of our guest DJs, Philip Jo or Frak Fu… Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? Too many times to remember, but Yes, but it didn’t work. Somehow they the best one of them all would didn’t believe I was Justin Bieber… get me back into trouble. My nickname at school was? Big Mac… Fracnis - gotta love dyslexia! Have you ever injured yourself at work? Besides doing an 8hr marathon set at Yes, these triple axle jumps can be a corporate event that slowly turned quite tricky. into a riot after I refused to play Bollywood tunage, luckily not yet! It’s not big and clever but… You didn’t have to write about it in a Sharp and wise. magazine. My best claim to fame is… Back in the day when I used to model I ended up doing a naked double page spread for Sissy Boy jeans in Elle Magazine, I was the Coming soon, watch this space… first lad to get naked in South Africa. Caused absolute chaos in the media… and I landed a small role in American Ninja 3! Describe your best track in 5 words… Orchestral maneuvers in the dark! Nothing beats the old school. Have you ever been arrested? Yes. Pimpin’ midgets is illegal in Yes for protesting and… some countries, go figure. Your answer to everything is…

I guess I’m opinionated.

Like a boss!

The verdict: Tighter than a nun’s legs, but Philip wins out for his big balls-out photo shoot story, skills.

ANGRY MONKEY While the city might have been swamped in quality acts recently, there’s still enough sh*t to make Dubai look like Gotham City’s sewer system. Chi, so long dying on its arse – after a dazzling couple of years – decided that rather than bringing in new talent (or rumour has it, paying some of their DJs), they’d invest whatever resources they’ve got in the utterly ludicrous Domeland structure, turning the once packed outdoor garden into an Alice in Wonderland style theme club. Only this time it’s Alice Cooper at the back end of a week-long acid binge that seems to have inspired them. Not to be outdone, the highbrow, cerebral clubbing brand So Rich, So Pretty (sorry if that made you vomit in your mouth) have launched their new night We Love Models AKA We Love Paying Ugly Girls In Bad Makeup To Stand Around And Look Bored All Night While Desperate Men Fawn Over Them Until The Lights Come Up. Seriously Dubai, get a grip. Happy New Year…
