Congratulations are in order to local duo Hollaphonic, whose first single rocketed to the UAE iTunes No.1 spot, knocking off Rihanna – pretty impressive work considering only one half of them (Radio 1’s Greg Stainer) is a full time DJ/producer.

But what it does show is that thanks to their impressive online presence – no doubt driven by their Twitteraddicted MC Olly Wood – they’ve quickly gained traction, while they’ve not been afraid to use the press to good effect. And it’s this, their ability to maximize their talent in the public eye which really marks them out in this market, which can often view the media with suspicion or just assume they’ll get by without. We’re here to shout about amazing music, incredible clubs and shows, so don’t hesitate to get in touch!

What we did

Ferry Corsten @ Café Del Mar

While it might have seemed an odd fit to the purists – banging trance at a club renowned for its Chill Out CDs? – Ferry Corsten didn’t disappoint the packed out club. But he might have disappointed those expecting him to drop a classic trance set as his sound was more electronic, taking in electro house, progressive and big EDM tunes alongside a few trance flourishes. And considering he came on at 9pm, when most clubs are just considering opening up, he got a great reaction from the dancefloor with plenty of hands-in-the-air-action.

Cirque Du Soleil @ World Trade Centre

Variety is the spice of life, they say, so instead of nursing our customary Saturday hangover on the sofa, we headed out to the much-heralded Circque du Soleil show. And we were instantly glad we did as apart from the sardine sitting conditions – seriously guys, a little more room next time – it was mesmerizing from the very first act. Our highlights were the trampoline/wall/parkour act who ran vertically and horizontally along a wall, while the live band (hidden until the spotlight at the end) were impressively on cue, adding real drama and emotion to the hold-your-breath stunts. If you missed it, you definitely missed out.

Infusion Magazine Valetine’s Experience @ 360

We don’t want to take responsibility for a post-Valentine’s night baby boom in Dubai, but there was a lot of love in the air last week. Quite literally as well, as our huge cut out red heart was doing the rounds across the packed out club full of disgustingly good looking people. Musically, our all female line up was on hot form, with Natalie Brogan’s main set peaking with Jamiroquai’s ‘Canned Heat, ’ prompting instantaneous dancefloor combustion. Which is exactly what you want on Valentine’s Day…

2MANYDJS THURSDAY 28 FEBRUARY 2013

Looking Back Miguell Campbell @ Blue Marlin

Close your eyes and you could have been in Ibiza last week, such was the frenzied reaction as everyone – and we do literally mean everyone – tried their hardest to catch Hot Creations star Miguel Campbell at Blue Marlin. By 7:30pm it was almost impossible to get in; even if you had a table nothing could twist the arms of the bouncers. We cunningly used the ‘please I really have to pee’ card which worked instantly on the naïve security guard. Once finally inside that Ibiza vibe was to the fore again as punters crowded the dance floor reaching for the lasers above. A projection of a butterfly could be seen flying above the water which added some special visuals for the night. Miguel played a great mix of vocal laden house tunes including classic Daft Punk remixes and his new Hot Creation tunes that kept everyone dancing. It didn’t end the next day (or even the next) as all good Ibiza parties should, but apart from that, this is as close as you’ll get out here.

Looking Forward

Local News P.S.Y dance

Billed by some as Dubai's equivalent of the Miami Winter Music Conference, My Music X launches in Dubai this March, bringing with it a host of big name DJs and acts – including P.S.Y of ‘Gangnam Style’ fame – as well as interactive workshops, talks, demonstrations and more. DJs confirmed so far include David Morales, Kevin Saunderson, Marco V, while Eve and Sean Paul have also been confirmed for the 3 day festival held across Nasimi and DIMC from March 27. facebook.com/mymusicx

Guetta vs Beiber

The promoters of David Guetta’s return to the emirate might be getting Beiber fever as they’ve pitched the French pop star against the ‘Baby Baby’ teen sensation. The big clash takes place on Friday May 3 as David Guetta plays at the Atlantis Beach, while Beiber does his mini-Michael Jackson routine at the 7s stadium.

Guns’n’Roses return It seems like just yesterday that a founding member of Guns’n’Roses was just here, and not that long ago that Axl Rose’s incarnation were in town, but that hasn’t stopped Flash from booking the legendary band for what should be a sold out show on March 28. Tickets are on sale now at thinkflash.ae.

Looking Forward House of Africa

We’ve mined the African music route before at Infusion, bringing down some of the best DJs on the continent including Black Coffee, Goldfish and Dino Moran. But we’re now launching a brand new weekly concept, the House of Africa, every Friday from M-Dek at the Media One hotel showcasing the likes of Culoe De Song, Ryan Dent, Craig Da Sousa, Ricardo Da Costa, Lady Lea and more from Friday March 1.

Don’t look back in anger

It’s been a cracking few months for indie fans in the city. First came the Stone Roses, then Atlantis confirmed they’d booked Noel Gallagher to headline their one-day indie fest at the hotel on March 16, with the Verve’s Richard Ashcroft on warm up duties. And we’ve just heard that the Happy Mondays, another Madchester band, will be returning to the city on April 25 to play at the Dubai Tennis Stadium. Early bird tickets for Noel Gallagher, who’s confirmed he’ll be playing Oasis songs, have sold out, but regular tickets starting at Dhs295 are available now.

Holidays in Goa, a little slice of heaven only 3 hours (and an Indian visa) away…

Our weekend warmup, 4-6pm every Thursday is really starting to take off, check the Infusion Facebook page for the link!

Getting requests from hotel guests asking for the Bee Gee when you've just dropped the latest BLack Coffee track. Drunk club chat. Oh, so you know Axwell/Carl Cox/ Deadmau5? It’s been an incredible ride for Julio Iglesias. From a bed-bound illness for 2 years, to releasing 80 albums which have sold hundreds of millions of copies and becoming one of the most recognized names on the planet, he’s done it his way, every step of the way. Ahead of his return to Dubai on Thursday March 21, we looked back at his history through some of his best quotes… Research: Marlon Tulaszewski

On Enrique

“With Enrique, it’s not a question of singing, it’s a question of aptitude. He has the blood, the spirit, the character of a champion. You go into a fight with Enrique boxing, he’d kill you.”

on modern day recording

“Before we’d be performing in a little club, there was time to learn, get it right, and if you got to number one, you’d be there for five or six weeks, it gave you time to learn. These days, you’re number one only for a day, and if you’re not number one, forget it. “You have to be the best in the first session, and a lot of people aren’t. Imagine being on the first day of something like Idol – very difficult - even for somebody like Paul McCartney, one day and it could all be over.”

on his career/ inspiration

“I listen to the people. That was a big reason for my life, maybe the main reason, I’m singing because I love it when people say to me, ‘thank you.’ I thank them. It’s a marriage.”

on his idols/ artists who inspired him

“Well I adore the Beatles and I loved George Harrison. The influence on my music, well, not my music but at least the idea of becoming a singer comes from Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the ‘60s. And, of course, “My Sweet Lord” was an incredible song that I loved.”

on singing and performing

“I am happy. I’m happy because I’m alive. As you know very well, for me, to perform is a gift that comes from heaven. It’s not a question of money in my life at all. I love to sing and I will love to sing until I die.” Julio Iglesias, Thursday March 21, Dubai World Trade Centre, tickets from Dhs320, www.juliodubai.com All quotes from AtlanticCityWeekly.com and huffingtonpost.co.uk

Globalfunk is back, and in a big way, with DJ Marky, Andy C and DJ Hype confirmed for the next 3 gigs. And it’s the Fabric star Kevin Ford AKA DJ Hype who kicks things off on March 7. Ahead of his gig at The Music Room, we caught up with him to find out more…

Welcome back to the city, how do the crowds and energy in Dubai compare to other cities, are they more pumped as we don’t have as much access to big DnB names like yourself? Dubai is fun, and where you find the best-dressed drum and bass fans. DnB has really become a mainstream genre in recent times, with numbers 1s and big names like Chase and Status and DJ Fresh. Have you felt that impact in your bookings? It’s great to see it in the mainstream as it attracts new people to the true underground sound that I play every week.

What have been the best and worst changes in your industry since you started? The best: the music getting mainstream. The worst: the music getting mainstream. What records are doing it in your set at the moment? A lot of tracks from my label

artists (Hazard, Original Sin, Taxman, Potential Badboy etc). But I am testing a lot of music from some new artists I am signing too and I love loads of other artists, too many to name… You must run one of the longest running nights in London, Playaz – what’s the secret to its success? Real drum and bass jungle at its finest on the best club sound system and my happy face, haha! Your Twitter bio says you love to moan a lot, what’s your biggest gripe? Don’t get me started!

You recently played Manchester and Reading in one night, what other crazy itineraries/gig missions have you done over the years? It’s always crazy. You can be in London on a Friday night DJing then be on a flight Saturday morning to Russia and back home by Sunday night. Or there are the mad Australian/ New Zealand tours, they are

always mad because you are flying to different time zones every day. You’ve been to Dubai before – what can people expect from your set, more of the same? You can expect fresh music mixed up with a couple of classics thrown in for good measure. Globalfunk feat. DJ Hype, Thursday March 7, Music Room, 9pm-3am, Dhs100.

DJ Hype: need to know He was one of the first pirate DJs, playing on Fantasy FM, and is now a main player on Kiss FM. His Ganja Records label was big in the 90s, releasing floor fillers like DJ Zinc’s ‘Super Sharp Shooter.’ His long-running night at Fabric has just had its 150th party, with Globalfunk head honcho Mach 4 a previous guest on the line up.

Just duet

He’s the fast rising Australian house star Sonny Fodera, and she’s the equally fast-rising Australian female house star Juliet Fox, and together they’ll be bringing the funk to 360’s dancefloor courtesy of Infusion…

Sonny: We see you have been a busy man since since the last time you were here. What are you working on currently? My album for Cajual Records and single for Defected Records. They will be out very soon, I'm really excited about these releases. Juliet: This is your first time in Dubai playing at 360. What can new fans expect from your upcoming set? A very energetic set which will cross from deep house to bouncy tech. Juliet: As well as being a club DJ and promoter you also host a radio show and most recently launched Attraction Radio, on Manchester Global Radio. How did that come about? I was approached to host my own show on Manchester Global Radio which I ran for almost three years (which focused on all things house and guest mixes from artists all

around the world). I only just recently stopped this though to concentrate more on music production and also building up my own label Attraction Music. Sonny: You did a big tour of the US and Canada last year. What was the most memorable event from the tour? It was pretty amazing! It’s pretty hard to pick the most memorable moment, but if I had to pick a couple it would be playing sunset in San Francisco at the Pier for 2nd Sunday, Footwork in Toronto and the road trip through the rocky mountains, Albuquerque to Denver. Juliet: What projects are you working on the moment? And are there any artists on your wish list you would hope to collaborate with this year? At the moment I am working on an album compilation which will be released on Attraction Music early March, as well as

quite a few of my own tracks. For 2013 I am looking to focus on a lot of my own original production, but one artist I am looking to collaborate with soon is Chris Lorenzo (Cause & Affect). Infusion Magazine Experience, Thursday February 28, 6pm3am, free entry all night.

Music News... Ministry Men Bash Profiteer Property Developers

Ministry Of Sound chief James Palumbo warned this week that his South London clubbing conglomerate is facing an existential threat from property speculators scheming to build a gigantic tower block of luxury flats on the doorstep of the iconic Elephant & Castle club. “The bottom line is if they build that block of flats, we are going to close,” James told the Standard, going on to launch a personalised attack on the financiers behind the plan. “We pay tens of millions in PAYE, corporation tax, national insurance, VAT. That property is owned by a British Virgin Islands company which MUSIC BITES is owned by clients of a Swiss bank,” he “If you want comcontinued. “I don’t see why my business mercial s*** then should die to facilitate an offshore company get out, get the f*** making profits from luxury flats.” out. I ain’t pulling His comments were echoed by Ministry no mother***ing punches no more CEO Lohan Presencer, in a similarly blunt assessment of the character traits of luxury US house legend flat company Oakmayne Properties. Kerry Chandler tells “Short-term profits for a property his French crowd developer – who frankly is funding all his how it is... exploits with money offshore – should not take precedence over the contribution that we make as a business and as an employer,” Lohan told DJ magazine. “Oakmayne Properties are based in the Isle Of Man, the company that they used to buy the site is based in the British Virgin Islands, and the property developer himself lives in Monaco and flies in during the week.”

Look and Listen Top of the pops

Polls are a guaranteed way to get people talking, and there’s been a lot of discussion after Mixmag launched their search to find the greatest dance track of all time. Voted by the public, number one spot was Daft Punk’s ‘One More Time,’ followed by Tiesto ‘Adagio For Strings’ and The Prodigy ‘Smack My Bitch Up’. Filling the Top 10 were Underworld ‘Born Slippy’, Faithless ‘Insomnia’, Stardust ‘Music Sounds Better With You’, Plastikman ‘Spastik’, PVD ‘For An Angel’, Sasha ‘Xpander’ and Fatboy Slim ‘Right Here, Right Now.’ Notable other entrants were Swedish House Mafia and ‘One’ at 17 and New Order and ‘Blue Monday’ at 18. For a full run down, head here http:// mixmag.net/words/news/what-is-the-greatest-dance-track-of-all-time.

EDM is gross

Need another clue that EDM is taking over America? Then look no further than bass warrior Bassnectar, who’s recent US tour has become one of the highest grossing, taking in average box office receipts of $217, 660 with an average ticket price of $40. Impressively he’s currently ranked 13th for tour profits, and on the same list as rock/ pop heavyweights Bruce Springsteen and Justin Beiber.

Deadmau5 to the rescue

Not a week goes past that Deadmau5 AKA large-gobbed Canadian Joel Zimmerman doesn’t offend someone, and we’re normally here printing said insults. And this issue is no different as he’s had a pop at the Swedish House Mafia saying ‘There’s three of you and one f***ing CD with the track on it. It’s all show pony s***.” However, he did go on to say how lovely the guys are: “They’re great people. I always feel bad, but I think they get it when I say s***. So I can hang with [them]...they’re all really cool dudes, and we have good times. When I start gacking on about what they do or their stage thing, they understand.” He then continued his path of dissdestruction by taking pops at Avicii’s management, Kanye West, Tommy Lee, and EDM, renaming it “Event Driven Marketing”, a phrase he has used before.

Album Reviews... Foals – Holy Fire www.foals.co.uk/



With all the horse jokes around at the moment, it would be easy to leap head first into this review with some cunning horse play (ahem), but that would be doing a disservice to Foals, the UK indie/electronic 5 piece band in question. For their 3rd album, Holy Fire, have taken the angular punkfunk of previous albums Antidote and Total Life Forever, and smoothed out the edges, while at the same time, elevating their melodies into stadium territory. So we get ‘Inhaler’ and ‘My Number’ as the two lead singles, which are destined to be big festival hits this summer. Equal parts furious musicianship and pop-savvy grooves, Holy Fire dispenses with the fractured rhythms and off-kilter harmonies from their previous albums. Which isn’t to say that this is an album devoid of edge: ‘Milk and Black Spiders’ is a mesmerizing study in suspense, while ‘Providence’ is a thrumming near metal workout. This then is Foals bid for the big time, and one that should open up their audience to countless more. Andy Buchan

My Bloody Valentine – m b v www.mybloodyvalentine.org



It’s no understatement to say that without My Bloody Valentine, there’d be no Radiohead, no Smashing Pumpkins, no Deerhunter, no Sigur Ros. For when they released their seminal album Loveless and Isn’t Anything back in the late 80s, early 90s, they created a sound template that inspired others, but was very much unique, melding loose limbed hypnotic guitar washes to strung out, largely indecipherable vocals, and generally making music that sounds like it was born in a morphine den. But for 22 years, the band helmed by the reclusive Kevin Shields, have been so backward in coming forward that many fans had given up hope on new material, until the Northern Ireland 4 piece released m b v in the dead of night. And has it been worth the wait? Yes and no. Yes as no one else can make music that sounds anything like this. And no as it doesn’t really evolve from their previous albums. But considering how lustrous this album is, how other worldly it sounds and how many bands and fans they’ve touched, it would be churlish to complain that they’ve come up with another – albeit similar - masterpiece. Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Ghetto Funk Icons Volume 3



New genres spring up all the time, they latest being trap, but one that might have crept under your radar is Ghettofunk – a slowed down breakbeat, with lashings of bass and wobble. And the Ghettofunk label have returned to their Icons premise – basically reworking classic tracks into bassy bangers – for this third installment featuring beat heavy reworks of The Clash, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes and Joy Division amongst others. Not all hit the spot, but when it’s a free download via ghettofunk.co.uk, it would be churlish to complain. Palma Violets – 180



Every year there’s a great new guitar hope, and this year according to fading industry bible NME, it’s the Palma Violets. And on the strength of their smash single last year ‘Best Of Friends’, you’d have to agree with them. But on their debut album, this London four piece sound a bit too frenzied and hurried, as if it’s a half-finished album rushed out for the masses. Tracks like ‘Chicken Dippers’ and ‘Step Up For The Cool Kids’ are the pick of the bunch as rounded, chart friendly rockers, but the rest is too forgettable to make this anything but a good, and not classic, rock album.

DJ Booth: Salar

He’s one of the driving forces behind blistering new night Analog Room, and had one of his collaborations included on Pierre Ravan’s latest CD…

One thing you might not know about me is... That I was born in 1990, that usually is shocking to most the people. My worst ever job was... Definitely working in a supermarket in Tehran, it wasn’t even super... DJing is much like... Nothing really I would say... When you see people going nuts to a tune that you think could drive’em there it gives you a great feeling, I love sharing music. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... In real growth, I have seen this with my own eyes since I moved here… There is a long way ahead and to be fair you shouldn’t expect it to become the 2nd Berlin. The scene I am involved with has people in it that can tell the difference between the real stuff and the other, so that’s a good crowd and that is already half of it. We just need more good venues and maybe some extra hours. I’m really proud of... My family, my family and my family. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Playing alongside the one and only David Moufang. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... Early 90s. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... I would say Alexkid. I’m not a politician but... There is no but… I’m not a politician. soundcloud.com/salaransari

Friends with Benefits

Missing your alternative edge in Dubai? Then head down to the Blue Bar every Saturday night, where Tim Hassall’s new band mix up Foals/Black Keys/Strokes covers with original material‌

Band Members L-R: Stanislav Fedyuk, Gabriel Matute, Tim Hassall, Tim Burnell How would you describe your sound? Like applying an ice-cold moist refreshment towelette to the face. Being a musician in Dubai is much like... Being a cowboy with a big hat and no cattle. My first musical influence was... Not sure, but the first things I loved playing were Watermellon Man (Herbie Hancock) on sax and Street Spirit Fade Out (Radiohead) on guitar. The best way to get noticed in Dubai is... To put yourself out there by expressing your own character and attitude, whilst bringing something that adds value to the community. What’s the best gig you’ve played? Unspangled Americana Music Festival in Cologne, Germany. And the worst? There are never any bad ones. Just steep learning curves. Band motto? We haven’t decided on one yet, but my personal motto in the music business has always been, ‘Make it happen. Be Persuasive. Stay Decent.’ Dubai’s music scene is... Full of amazingly talented people. The best lyrics of all time are... While preachers preach of evil fates/Teachers teach that knowledge waits/Can lead to hundreddollar plates/Goodness hides behind its gates. But even the president of the United States/Sometimes must have to stand naked Bob Dylan, ‘It’s Alright Ma I’m Only Bleeding’ What’s the one song you couldn’t cover? ‘Stairway To Heaven’. If we could change one thing about Dubai’s music scene... More listeners. We got the venues, we got the musicians. We need more people who are excited about the arts and who are willing to go into work a little hung-over on a week-day. facebook.com/timhassallmusic

Weird News... Sealed with a kiss

You’d imagine a couple of love-struck teenagers on school holidays would have been in with a shout for the longest ever kiss, but one elderly couple in Thailand are attempting to break the world record. The couple who have been married for 50 years are attempting to beat the current record of 50 hours and 25 minutes. “I’m not sure if we’ll win because of our age,” said Mrs Yomjinda, “but if we were younger, we would surely win.” Couples are allowed to drink water through a straw so long as their lips remain sealed. Referees accompany them to a special bathroom throughout the competition.

Chubby Checker is suing the makers of an app that estimates the size of a man’s penis for using his name without permission. The 71-year-old singer, best known for his 1960 hit The Twist, claims the app has associated his name with “obscene sexual connotation”. He is seeking half a million dollars for the “irreparable damage and harm” the app, created for Hewlett-Packard’s Palm OS platform, has done to his reputation. Checker’s lawyer Willie Gary said: “This lawsuit is about preserving the integrity and legacy of a man who has spent years working hard at his musical craft. “The defendants have marketed Chubby Checkers’ name on their product to gain a profit and this just isn’t right.” The Chubby Checker app, which estimates penis length in both metric and imperial measurements, was reportedly withdrawn in September.

The Big Question

Conan: The price of red wine. 85 dhs for a glass of house red is a diabolical liberty.

Ince: The timings! Parties should end when the sun comes up. There’s a reason why it’s called a “nightlife

Tolga: Ban the use of sparklers a bottle. It makes me feel like a complete twat and I tell the wait sta℀ that if they bring them they won’t get a tip at the end of the night.

Pablo: Remove all hotel management! Stick to marketing room deals!

What would you change about Dubai’s nightlife?

?

Bendouro: People

Simon: Remove people from food backgrounds being involved in nightlife!!! give nightlife back to the clubbers/ promotors!!!! chefs don’t play with electronics.. it’s killing our nightlife scene!

Sheetal: Originality! Let the dj’s play the music they want to play rather than making them stick to a play list which is changed once a year. DJ’s are entertainers. Let them entertain!

Steven: Guestlists and table bookings being compulsory to get into some club... I want to be on the dance lfoor... dress codes should be more relaxed too.

ANGRY MONKEY So, guess who’s back in town? Go on, guess. Nope, not Armin Van Buuren, and it’s not Example, it’s the third of the three hapless house heroes David Guetta we’re so obviously referring to. Because despite having played here just a few months ago, and having played here just a few months before that, the most successful/nauseating man in dance-pop is back. Obviously it’ll sell out, and obviously – despite his rumoured near $1million fee – it’ll be a money earner for the promoters. But the Monkey has to wonder just why you’d go and see him again? I mean, if you’ve been to his countless other gigs, you’d have heard his so seamless they were pre-recorded mixes, his zero personality high NRG pop and him gormlessly flinging up his hands in a heart shaped symbol as another gash awful bassline drops. But the Monkey salutes the thousands that will mindlessly march down to see the great Gallic d*ck in action, you’re more hardcore than me.

Monkey Out...
