I think I might be repeating myself, but bear with me – have we ever had it so good in Dubai? The alternative scene is booming thanks to guys like DUST, Deep Crates, Bassworx, Globalfunk, Step On, Loaded, Metal Asylum and more, the house scene is stronger than ever with Blue Marlin, Trilogy, iLL Communications, Analog Room and Nasimi all punching their weight and bringing us Dubai debuts virtually every week, and the VIP scene is bigger – and richer – than ever with VIP Room, Movida, Café Del Mar and the rest all vying for your clubbing dirham. And that’s not to forget the big gig scene (Bruno Mars, Metallica and Noel Gallagher) nor the everstrong commercial scene. The city is booming, and we’re very proud to have been a part of it for nearly 8 years now. Here’s to the good times… Andy

What we did
Stone Roses @ Media City
Despite only releasing two albums, there’s no denying Manchester 4 piece The Stone Roses’ place in the indie pantheon. You just had to check out the Facebook status of any self respecting Brit or indie fan when they played to see the near-mythical regard they’re held in. And the recently reformed group didn’t disappoint, as all of their hits were present and correct, notably an extended, funk wig out version of ‘Fools Gold.’ Ian Brown was as charismatic and out of tune as ever, while Reni on the drums was mesmerising, abetted by Squire on guitar and Mani’s leering bass. The only downside were the bar queues: Brits and indie music equals one thirsty crowd, and with queues snaking for more than 30 minutes some decided that booze was more important than watching their heroes at work. The rest of us did the sensible thing and got down, making up for lost drinking time afterwards.
Paul Oakenfold @ XL Beach Club
Longevity. It is, essentially, what we’re all looking for: longer lives, longer experiences, longer careers. And they don’t come much more respected – or older – than Paul Oakenfold, one of the British house pioneers from the early 80s. Over 30 years since he first began his house music journey, he’s still one of the biggest, indemand names in the world. It’s fair to say he’s learnt a lot along the way, and was the consummate showman: signing autographs, posing for sure-to-be-Facebook profile pics and when it came to the music, physically getting into his set, which was a melodic mash of trance and big room – or, in this case, pool-side – EDM. And judging by the response on the dancefloor, it was just what they wanted, proving he’s still very much got it after all these years.

Local News Psy not coming to Dubai
‘Gangnam Style’ fans might well be gutted to hear that Psy will not be coming to Dubai as part of the My Music X Project after he used Twitter to refute their claims, but the rest of us can breathe a sigh of relief. Don’t breathe all the way out as Akon is still very much confirmed. There is, however, plenty of good news as Sander Kleinenberg (pictured), Kevin Saunderson, ATB, Example and many more are confirmed for their one-day festival at Nasimi on the 29th, while there are a host of workshops, interactive talks and more being held at DIMC during the 3 day event. facebook.com/mymusicx
Peppermint goes Dutch
It’s been a bit quiet on the Peppermint front recently, but they’re back – and in a big way – as they’re hosting Dutch trance turned EDM star Tiesto at the World Trade Centre on Thursday March 28. And the night comes hosted by one of our favourite festivals, the 3 day electronic music event in Goa, Sunburn. Support on the night comes from the everexcellent MaDJam, Sunburn resident Shaan and Indian trance DJ Pearl.
Disco DUST
DUST are back in action after their turn at the ace Tiger Translate party, and they’ve invited down Scottish born, Berlin based DJ and producer Red Rack’em, AKA Hot Coins, for their Friday March 22 party. He’s brought his punk-funk meets nu-disco and deep house sound to some of the biggest stages in the world, including Glastonbury, Snowbombing and The Big Chill, and released on disco heavyweights like Tirk, Untracked and his own Bergerac label. It all takes place at the Music Room, with support from Megadon Betamax and James Locksmith from 9pm, with tickets Dhs75.
Looking Forward Lighting up local talent
Heads up all rock bands: Triplew.me have teamed up with Zippo to create a brand new band competition, where the winning act will get their own music video and rockumentary about the band, while their fans will then decide on the last prize via a public vote. To find out more, and sign up, head to triplew.me/zippo.
Luck of the Irish
Life rule number 1: Never let the facts get in the way of a good party. And it’s something the Irish Village have taken to heart as they’ve extended St. Patrick’s day into a week-long celebration, starting with Sir Bob Geldof’s gig on March 14, and culminating in Tommy Tiernan’s concert on the 21st at the Tennis Stadium. Tickets are Dhs125 for Bob, and Dhs175 for Tommy, while there’s also a full entertainment program at the IV from Friday March 15th to 17th.
Big ups to No.1 Events who have turned their night into a full on beach party at Rixos! Welcome back to Mansion club, let's hope take 2 lasts longer than the first time around as it's got a cracking soundystem and layout. We're getting our sea legs back as deep house party Never Get Out The Boat returns to Jebel Ali, check out fb.com/ wearedumm for more info.
Pamela Anderson is 'appearing' at a club near you soon. If 50 year old silicon boobs do it for you, then all the breast with that endeavour. Daft Punk's teaser campaign. Just release the music already! Planning summer holidays, why are flights outta here during the summer hell so expensive?!

You’re a very minimal producer – how did you view the scene when it became hugely fashionable, and then the attention died away? I think any kind of music goes in and out of fashion, so I’m not so worried about that. I make music that hopefully survives all trends… You were part of Vulva, who released on Aphex Twin’s label Rephlex – what was working with Aphex Twin like? Aphex Twin AKA Richard James is an amazing artist, working and hanging out with him was extremely interesting, funny and inspiring. You’re part of the Cadenza label, which has been showcased in Dubai lots of times - what’s the feedback been like about the city? I’ve only heard good things... You’ve said before that electronic music is a continuation of jazz - can youexplain that a little to us? And how does your sound fit into that? Jazz music is a music that is subtle and intellectually driven. Also it is music that has a functionality e.g it’s a new music that sometimes people feel is difficult to understand and you need the right environment and mood to appreciate and feel.
You sampled Pink on your No Disco Future track - what was the feedback like, did you get any criticism for using a Pink sample from the house community? Some people did feel upset though I don’t know why. I use voice samples, and if I like them I’ll use them no matter where they’re from. You study astrology and you’re playing an open-air pool party - how much of the time will be spent looking up at the stars? I love astrology and I love looking at the stars. I always have that in my heart at open air pool parties, I’ll hopefully enjoy a part of it with everyone else. You’re also a very spiritual person - how does that fit into your industry? I try to put my spirituality into the music, hopefully you can feel it through that. We think this is your first time playing in Dubai - what can we expect from your show? I’ll transport everyone into moments of physical and spiritual ecstasy. Lick My Deck feat. Thomas Melchior, Dek on 8, Media One Hotel, Thursday March 28.

THE WARMUP YOUR WEEKLY DJ SHOW, LIVE FROM EVERY THURSDAY 4-6PM Log on to www.infusion.ae or www.facebook.com/InfusionMagazine
We get excited about DJs every day in the Infusion office, but when we found out funk/soul/hip hop specialist Andy Smith – and ex Portishead star – was returning to Dubai, we got our excited office groove on. Here the vinyl specialist talks about what to expect upon his return to the city...
The vinyl
Welcome back to Dubai, your gig at the first Chill Out Festival is still talked about out – what do you remember about the gig and the city? I enjoyed it the last time I was there – it was like nowhere I had been before to be honest! The only thing that troubled me as I remember, was the taxi driver taking me back from the gig couldn’t find the hotel. At one point we were ’off roading’ around a building site! You’re a vinyl specialist, where do you get your vinyl these days? Mainly the internet as the best stuff is on there to be honest. There are still some record shops in London but the selection isn’t what it used to be and what with these dedicated ‘vinyl trading
Facebook pages’ there is just better stuff online. I still do buy Disco & Boogie 12” singles in record shops. I do like to look through ‘actual record racks’ when I can! Have you made use of any of the new DJ technology? I have used Serato when doing long tours out of the UK (always with a bag of 45’s though!) but to be honest I don’t really like using it (other than instantly having 2 copies of everything and no feedback). I’ve actually stopped using it at all now and have gone back to strictly vinyl as it’s just more ‘me’ really! Is there one record you’re still on the hunt for? There are always records I’m on the hunt for but as I press a lot of my own vinyl 45 dubplates, if I can’t get it I’ll just take a cut from a CD or an LP. ‘ Ring A Ling’ by Dimples Jackson is this week’s want (as another DJ played it when DJing with me last week!)
frontier
Have you been involved in live music or bands since, touring with Portishead? I recorded the ‘Dynamo Productions’ LP with Scott Hendy (AKA Boca 45) but it never became a ‘Live’ band as such. What’s the one track you can play in every set? ‘Beggin’ by Timebox. And if people haven’t heard you before, what should they expect this time around? I’m heading out there with MC Honey Brown so it will be a mix of Hip Hop (the original version!) with Soul, Original R&B, Reggae, Ska, Funk etc. Just classic vintage tunes really. Drop Dread feat. Andy Smith + Mc Honey Brown, Casa Latina (Ibis Al Barsha), Friday March 15, 10pm-3am, Dhs130.

The alternative It’s award season, and we’re very pleased to have been nominated for a whole heap at the up-coming Time Out bash. But it made us think of some alternative categories, we’ll let you come up with the winners… Illustrations: Jmaxlolo
Worst dancefloor due to VIP tables A highly contested award, which sees many would-bedancers waking up the next day with the knees of a 90 year old granny thanks to incessant banging on the tables. Biggest sparkler award Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s just another tosser with a Dhs1 firework poking out the top of his hideously over-priced Magnum. (Side note: the petition to get every bottle of Corona delivered with a sparkler starts here).
nightlife awards Highest ladies of the night to clubbers ratio Packed out ladies night? Ahem, take a closer look at the clientele‌ Biggest fish in the smallest pond For lording it up like a medieval feudal King, believing everything they touch turns to nightlife gold. Best mis-use of the term Deep House Another contentious category as scores of laptop DJs clash in the battle of the deep house bassline, just a month after they were playing nu-disco and a year after they dropped minimal. David Guetta award for services to Dubai hotel services Runner up nominations for Zane Lowe and Example.
Most online presence Category devoted to those online masterminds who create 23 fake, bigbreasted profiles in skimpy bikinis in the vain hope that it will entice overly hairy, big-spending letches to their shabby establishment. Best DJ Warm up award (sponsored by the Beatport Top 10) Who will walk away with the prize for their seamless sync’d set featuring the biggest EDM bangers dropped to an appreciative dancefloor of 10 people at 11pm? Wishful thinking award That, you know, clubbing could, perhaps, be about the music rather than how much money you’ve spunked during 90 minutes in a commercial hell hole listening to bad Rihanna mashups on loop.
Local DJ declares Time Out Dubai Nightlife Awards shortlist a “crime against humanity” DUBAI: A popular nightlife personality in Dubai has angrily spoken out against the 2013 shortlist for the annual Time Out Dubai Nightlife Awards, which was unveiled last week. For a fourth successive year, DJ Habibi 2000 failed to receive a single nomination in the magazine’s shortlist, a situation he described as “scandalous” in a press conference yesterday. “Over the past 12 months, I’ve not only held down hugely successful residencies at Club Smug and Guccci Nightclub, but have also released four Now That’s What I Call Habibi House compilation CDs and launched my new DJH2K Swarovski-encrusted headphones,” he told reporters. “And yet I’ve been ignored once again. It’s a total crime against humanity.” In response to the shortlist, Habibi 2000 last week started a Twitter campaign using the hashtag #TeamHabibi2000, which at the time of going to press had been tweeted four times. “You know, I’m thinking about starting my own nightlife awards,” he added. “And I foresee a lot of Habibi 2000 nominations, especially in the World’s Greatest Living DJ category.” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Music News... MC Hammer Fights Back Against Racial Profiling
MC Hammer defended himself vigorously via Twitter this week after California cops accused him of being ‘very argumentative’ when they arrested him driving a car supposedly with ‘expired registration’. The 90s rap legend, who is nowadays a web mogul and hugely respected political activist with over 3 million Twitter follows, responded philosophically, quoting Albert Einstein’s 1940 maxim. “Greater Spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds” ... So true,” said Hammer, soon afterwards adding ‘ ‘Instead of being bitter, I’m taking the opportunity to make this a “teachable moment” and “eye opener” for my many friends & colleagues.” Explaining in detail what happened, he described how a ‘chubby elvis looking dude was tapping on my car window, I rolled down the window and he said’” Are you on parole or probation?” “While I was handing him my ID he reached in my car and tried to pull me out the car but forgot he was on a steady donut diet,” Hammer continued, “It was comical to me until he pulled out his guns, blew his whistle and yelled for help.” He also added a final personal retort: (‘I will now answer his question, contrary to his personal beliefs, all people of color are not on parole or probation fat boy!!!”)
MUSIC BITES In the early days, we’d have a laugh, go clubbing, but later on it became apparent that he’d gone into character. You’d come off stage and he’d do interviews as Ziggy – you’d be sat in a taxi with this alien. You’d ask a question and he’d look right through you. He had turned into Ziggy Stardust. Spiders from Mars drummer Mick “Woody” Woodmansey recalls being in David Bowie’s band in the early 70s.

Look and Listen Tiesto Drops Ibiza For Vegas Tiesto has signed a 20 month deal with Hakkasan Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Hotel, which means he will be bypassing Ibiza for the entire summer, Rolling Stone reported this week. “I do everything on my gut feeling, and I felt like it’s gonna’ be awesome there,” the trance titan turned EDM superstar DJ told the magazine, “I’ve been to Ibiza for 10 years, and I love Ibiza, but I always look for something new and a new challenge,” he added. The Dutch DJ also robustly defended MUSIC BITES ‘EDM’ last week, telling Spin Magazine he considers it ‘a great name for our genre’ Beatport gives us said he doesn’t like ‘pop music’ and insisted direct contact with ‘there’s a huge difference between me and the DJs and lets us David Guetta’. see what’s popular “I’m not commercial in the way that and what’s not. people consider “pop,” but I’m not Most important, it gives us a masunderground in the way that people sive platform for consider that. either. It’s been a busy few years for Pioneer, as they’ve reclaimed the land lost to laptop DJs thanks to a series of updates and new products. We sat down with Pioneer’s Anirban Bhattacharya to give us the latest
You’ve been very involved in the local community through the DJ Championships – what have you learnt about the local Djs after 2 years of running it? We have had two very successful annual events in Dubai so far, the participation from the local DJs has been tremendous. In 2011 we had about 150 entries whereas in 2012 it doubled to over 300. The standard of DJs in Dubai is on a par with the global standard when it comes to skills and showmanship, particularly house DJs. However scratch DJs (Turntabilists) are yet to catch up to the performance and skill level of other countries like the US, U.K, France, Japan and South Asian countries to name a few.
You’ve been in Dubai for a while now, how have you seen the club scene evolve? It is my 6th year in Dubai and honestly Dubai thrives on Commercial music: EDM, Top 40 urban & Hip Hop music is again very popular with the local crowd. Clubbing is geared more towards socializing in Dubai and not for the true love of music/ DJs, but there are exceptions. In the last few years. Dubai promoters have brought in more international acts which is good for the scene to get bigger and thrive, Dubai is the clubbing capital of the Middle Eastern countries and the top night clubs are all state of the art with top end sound and lights, which makes entertainment an experience in itself. You sponsor a few local DJs, who are they and why did you pick them? And how can local DJs catch your ear? Currently we are closely working with maDJam, Smokingroove, Brute Force aka Tuhin Mehta, Mass Ramli & DJ Kenobi. It is a dynamic role and our official DJs are not only popular, but are technically very sound. Besides the named DJs we are consistently keeping close association with the top local and global DJ fraternity. We are a successful company because we value DJs the utmost, our engineers are constantly striving to give
shape to the thoughts and ideas of DJs a reality. How often do you go out clubbing, and what are your favourite venues and DJs? I hit a club 2–3 times a week, mostly over the weekends, I am an insomniac and suffer from OCD (Obsessive Clubbing Disorder!) My favourite venues in Dubai are Trilogy, Nasimi, N’Dulge, Barasti, 360, Blue Marlin, Zinc, Boudoir, Jamrock at Sublime, People and Peppermint. My favourite local DJs are maDJam, Smokingroove, Charl Chaka, Mr.Mr, Mass Ramli, Conan Liquid, Shero, Bliss, Kenobi and Saif Ziwar. Where do you stand on the laptop/sync/DJ debate? You either embrace/adapt to technology or you get left behind. Acquiring DJ skills are fundamental, but one must be open to new tech tools available to improve one’s skill level. Pioneer is the industry standard, but how accessible is the equipment for the home DJ? Check the new entry range of controllers & DJ System from Pioneer DJ – DDJWeGo, DDJERGO, XDJ-AERO, DDJSX, DDJT1 etc. They are cost effective options for Home/ Entry/Semi Professional DJs. www.pioneerdj.com.

Album Reviews... Biffy Clyro – Opposites www.biffyclyro.com/
For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
Album titles might not always be the greatest indicator of an album’s potential – Paul McCartney’s Kisses On The Bottom, anyone? – but die-hard Biffy Clyro fans, of which there are a huge number, might take their 6th album title to refer to the band being a very different proposition from that which began life back in 1995. For Opposites heralds the bands arrival into stadium territory, and is likely to be the LP that breaks them in America. But it comes at a price for the die-hard fans, as the band have tapered back their stop/start rock roots and embraced a more Snow Patrol friendly sound. That’s not to say there aren’t embers of their previous punk spirit burning – ‘The Joke’s On Us’ and the ferocious ‘Modern Magic Formula’ still burn bright – but this is the most radio-friendly offering the Scottish trio have given us yet. Which is the polar opposite to their early material. Andy Buchan

Johnny Marr – The Messenger www.johnny-marr.com/ For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
That Johnny Marr is one of the finest guitar heroes of his generation goes without saying – his multi-layered playing on The Smiths has influenced more bands than we could mention, while his recent Godlike genius award from NME could have been garnered for his impeccable haircut alone. But having chosen to spend the last 25 years as an axeman for hire – most recently for Modest Mouse and The Cribs – he’s finally unleashed his songwriting talent on a second solo album. And the results are impressive. The album’s title track chimes and chugs with melodic intent (with a bigger beat it could be a New Order hit), while ‘Generate Generate’ is him at his powerhouse best. And for those worrying that Marr’s voice – or rather lack of one – would hinder things, can rest easy: his vocals sit low in the mix, adding to the arrangement rather than dominating. Which after years of playing behind a certain Mr Big Mouth, is probably the intention.

Long-standing urban DJ and man behind Jamrock tells us what’s what‌
One thing you might not know about me is… I love chilling at home playing Xbox, FIFA 2013 and NBA2k1, it’s the only thing that keeps me entertained. My worst ever job was… I worked for an advertising agency for 2 years. Having to report to other people, that’s a big no no for me. My favourite ever record is… Anything but Beiber! Wow that’s a difficult question, it’s got to be any record from the legendary Stevie Wonder… DJing is much like … Playing Xbox, it’s fun and you’re in full control, the hype is all on you. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… More challenging now than it’s ever been with so many DJs and clubs out there. I love it, no homo. I’m really proud of… The way the urban scene has hit Dubai, R&B and Hip-Hop are played everywhere now, it makes me feel like I did my job right. If I could change one thing about anything it would be… Change the era of music we are going through right now, everything sounds the same. What are these producers thinking? I can’t live without… My 2 Rottweiler dogs, Ziggy and Missy. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... I’ve never really rated anything I’ve done by order of achievement. Sometimes it’s a small gig on a random night that holds the best memories. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… In the 80s and 90s, to me that’s when music was music. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… It would definitely be Jazzy Jeff, no doubt. famedxb.com www.twitter.com/sherodj

He’s a wise-cracking, musicmaking Irishman with a nice line in musical parody…
Paddyman
How would you describe your sound? My sound is has an Irish, acoustic, folk feel. Being a musician in Dubai is… Great. I just focus on what I love doing. The people and the venues I gig at are cool (Barasti and Fibber Magees) so it makes it much easier than it could otherwise be. The best way to get noticed in Dubai is... Play as many gigs as you can. People notice and can feel it if you enjoy what you do. If you mean “noticed” in the sense of being “discovered”, let me know when you find out how it’s done! What’s the worst gig you’ve played My first and worst gig was with my Dad when I was around 16 years old and had only been playing the guitar for a few months. It was in our local pub as the other band had cancelled. Dad sang and played accordion while I backed him playing basic chords on piano and guitar. We were terrible. It wasn’t long before the pub began to empty and the only people remaining were the local “Travelers” (gypsies) who knew they wouldn’t be served drink in any other pub in town. Despite this, a big red headed fella stood up and declared to the bar, “Ye are the worst piece of s*** band I’ve ever heard in all my jaysus life. And even though I know I won’t be served anywhere else I’d rather leave than put up with any more of that!” My father just laughed as if this was normal behavior to be learned from. He said, “Even if the tinker started a fight you should just keep playing!” And I have been playing ever since. Artist motto? You’re only as good as your last gig. What’s the one thing you’d like to request on your rider? Angelina Jolie. Talent shows are... Good for exposure and learning I suppose. I haven’t done many but I’ve found that when I agreed to do a musical comedy event for Dubomedy recently I was inspired to write new jokes and funny songs. One of my most requested songs at the gigs now came from preparing for that show. “Welcome to the Hotel Burj Khalifa” (a parody of ‘Hotel California’). www.paddyman.com

We know they’re more open minded in Holland, but one Dutch professor pushed things a bit far after he accidentally broadcast a porn movie across his campus. The 69 year old professor forgot to unplug his laptop from the projector, unaware that the university streaming service was still beaming the signal across the campus.
WEIRD BITES Potential participants must be fit and well, have no past medical history and not be users of recreational drugs. They must be happy not to cut or dye their hair for 120 days during the study follow up period. Doctors from Kings College London outline the types of ‘male volunteers, 25-40 years of age’ they’re seeking ‘to take part in a clinical study involving nasal administration of cocaine.’
What the Poppins? Remakes are all the rage, but we never thought we’d see a skydiver trying to recreate Mary Poppins’ umbrella adventure. But one BASE jumper did just that over southern California, using a patio umbrella to break his fall as he jumped from a hot air balloon. Amazingly, it did slow his fall for about 300m before it fell apart. Fortunately Mr Roner had guessed this possible ending and opened his back up chute to float safely down to earth.

Tour of Oman cyclists “must use cars next year”
MUSCAT: Regional sports pundits have poured scorn on the recently concluded Tour of Oman, which saw competitors race along the country’s roads on pedal-powered bicycles. “Bikes? Are the riders, like, nine years old?” commented Aseel Ahmed, chief sports reporter for Oman-1 TV. “I interviewed Chris Froome after the race and he was saying that he reached 80kph on the downhills, or something. How is this news? I’ve done 160 in my Lamborghini in the car park of Burger King. And I didn’t need to dress up like a gay spaceman neither,” he added. A spokesman for Oman-1 confirmed that they had received nearly 19,000 complaints from bored viewers. “Unless they come back next year packing a minimum of 400 horsepower, we’re not going to cover it,” he said. The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

ANGRY MONKEY Planking, Twatting and now… Sheep. You’re all sheep. That might come across as a bit kettle-calling-the-pan-black, but you are all unworthy, mewling, teat-fed sheep that have all the sophistication of a troupe of lemmings careering off the nearest cliff. And you know why? Because you’ve all – or very nearly all – shared, Liked, ‘LOL’d, or heinously enough, partaken in the latest internet fad, The Harlem Shake. Ignoring the fact that it’s clearly sh*tter than JLT’s traffic system, you blindly go where the rest of the online world go – 150 million Youtube views can’t be wrong, you reason. YES THEY CAN YOU MORON. If I started a new craze calling planking or twatting, would you jump in feet first and broadcast it to your nearest and dearest just how much of a dim-witted sheep you are? Most probably. Human extinction just got one Harlem Shake closer… Monkey Out...
