The Watchman Letter A strange place I find myself, indeed! I feel extremely honoured to have been asked by Charl and Andy to assist with the Infusion Magazine production for the next few weeks, whilst dear Andy takes some well-deserved rest. I’ve jumped in with both feet ‘although I must say’ Mr Buchan’s boots are a hard fill. I couldn’t have pulled it off without the incredible help of the ‘ever-so-cool’ Infusion tactical squad.

Looking Back
What we did DJ HYPE @ THE MUSIC ROOM Fans of low frequency bass-lines, it’s fair to say, have been well looked after by the cities promoters over the last few months. The roster of DJs has included Optical, DJ Marky, Andy C and Patife to name but a few. But there now seems to be one go-to venue for clubnight curators which is spearheading the scene and opening its doors to a fuss-free crowd who only have one thing on their mind. And it certainly isn’t what type of sparkler to get in their 3L bottle of Belvedere. That venue is The Music Room and the promoters holding court this time around was long-running DnB defendants, GlobalFunk. The returning DJ Hype was the main attraction on a night that started out quite cold. Mr Gremlin was on warm-up duties but could have done with someone squirting a bit of water on him. The earlydoors crew had to cosy up to the plentiful Ladies of the Night just to share a bit of bodily warmth! Mach 4 soon brought the heat as a steady flow of punters started to populate the room. He delivered a class act that enticed the eager bass-heads away from the free beer and into the middle of the floor. By 1am the stage was set. Despite looking a bit like someone who would serve you a kebab on Great Yarmouth seafront Hype carved through a monstrous set of future bass rollers and not so back in the day bangers from producers like TC and label-mate Sub Zero respectively. MC AD was a little bit annoying but it didn’t matter. It didn’t even matter that DJ Hype played a Kevin Lyttle remix (well, it did really) as by this point he had worked the crowd up into a bee-hive of bouncing loons who would have went mental to M People’s Moving On Up if he had dropped it. As a venue of well satisfied clubbers headed into the Bur Dubai bustle it was safe to say that The Music Room is the place to be if you want to rub sweaty shoulders with Dubai’s ünter-cool music fans.
Looking Back A toasty Friday on March 15th and another rammed Atlantis ‘Sandance’.This time around less acts but according to some event watchers. A better quality GALLAGHER @ selection. SANDANCE ATLANTIS It appeared the Brits were out ‘en masse’ to witness the return of Richard Ashcroft, his solo acoustic session strum of the Verve classics and Zane Lowes eclectic bounce. Obviously first timer Noel Gallagher gate-crashed the party to much adoration from the Dubai masses. Most expected to hear only his newer ‘High Flying Birds’ material but he belted out several Oasis hits, which initiated a full on crowd participation sing-a-long. Smashing night had by most and we at Infusion towers are very much looking forward to the next beach shindig with Florence And The Machine.
STRICTLY VINYL party at 360
The recent “STRICTLY VINYL” party at 360 with our Infusion crew seemed to tick all the right boxes. Charl Chaka warmed the audiences cockles nicely before turntable maestro Craig De Sousa followed by whipping together a quintiessental blend of solid French House slabs. Tracks by Jess & Crabbe, Troublemen, and Daft Pump stirred the crowd into a perfect moist peak! The richness, pop and crackle of authentic vinyl records sounded just delicious across the 360 boom boxes. Viva La Vinyl we say here at the Infusion boudoir!
MARCO CAROLA @ Blue Marlin Ibiza’
It seemed a huge crowd had made the jaunt over to ‘Blue Marlin Ibiza’ at the Al Jazira Resort earlier this month. Marco Corolla was in full effect, extending out the melodies that made him familiar! The hedonistic crowd were on form, whilst bouncing to the pumpychug of the Techno spiced gathering. Blue Marlin is serving up some awesome DJs and splendid events, as the weather warms over the next few months, we are excited to see who else will be visiting that secret magical patch of Ghantoot gold.
Looking Back
Say What Dancefloor dictionary PROJECT OLD SKOOL: A slang term that defines the act of drinking alcoholic beverages before heading to a bar or nightclub. The reasoning for this is so that once you arrive at your party place, you would already be feeling the effects of what you had previously drank, therefore limiting your need to purchase additional (overpriced) drinks at the bar. This saves you money and time if your goal is to get inebriated. In numbers A ‘googolplex’ is the number 1 followed by a googol zeros, a number so ridiculously big that it can’t be written because there literally isn’t enough room in the entire universe to fit it in!
Short and tweet Chris Brown Chris Brown has never been one to keep quiet. And true to form, the R&B bad boy just got into a Twitter battle with comedian Jenny Johnson. First, Brown self-pityingly tweeted that he looked old. Johnson replied that “being a worthless piece of s*** can really age a person.” Brown then hurled crass insults at her, and Johnson received death threats from some of Brown’s “Team Breezy” devotees. Brown’s account was suspended soon after. Old Jokes Home “I think it is just terrible and disgusting how everyone has treated Lance Armstrong, especially after what he achieved winning seven Tour de France races while competing on drugs. Local News Starting the line with MY MUSIC X.
There has been a lot of press surrounding this event because of “P.S.Y Gangnam Style.” He was coming, then he wasn’t then he was …. Blah! Blah! Blah! I must be honest, if a kitsch, throwaway bubble-gum, pop song like ‘Gangnam Style’ is at the forefront of what is supposed to be a pioneering music conference, I must be missing some magical point. I’m not sure how P.S.Y. comfortably sits into a feature that plays host to the likes of David Morales and Kevin Saunderson. Luckily, Baauer and his unique ‘Harlem Shake’ melody have replaced P.S.Y on the roster. The track itself may have been almost rinsed to death, but ‘Harlem Shake’ is a great offering with plenty of ‘bounce-to-the-ounce’! My Music X – Atlantis The Palm from 27th- 30th March.
Dubai World Cup
Seal will be making an appearance at the ‘closing’ ceremony of the forthcoming Dubai World Cup, horseracing gala event on Saturday, March 30th 2013 at the beautiful Meydan track. The action gets underway at 4:30pm with the Purebred Arabian Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic and comes to a close following the eighteenth running of the US$10m Dubai World Cup at 10:05pm. www.meydan.ae

Looking Forward Experience Hector Moralez
Infusion magazine is proud to announce that Hector Moralez will be joining us this month for another edition of The Experience. With local support from Charl Chaka and new guest Gabriel Green we can’t wait for this one. Rising from Oakland, California and fast becoming one of house music’s elite, Hector Moralez has paid his dues by working tirelessly from the bottom up. In demand at clubs and events throughout the world. Hector Moralez is renowned for his intelligent and soul awakening house music. Hectors love, passion and energy are clear to see. His sounds take influence from Latin, jazz, funk, hip-hop and soul and are of course sewn together with bass lines and solid fat beats. Hector’s character, hard work and innovative ability has given him a prominent standing in the house music scene, leading him to become one of the most sought after artists. The Experience Ft. WHATEVER YOU'RE ON
The boys from Salford, Greater Manchester, UK, originally formed way back in 1980. Their Indie/Rock/Pop/ seasoned audio inspired a whole generation of people to turn on, tune in and party 24 hours a day! The guys have had a truly turbulent ‘rock-n-roll’ existence but don’t seem to regret a single second! How would you describe the last 12 months of your lives / life? F***ing brilliant! It’s been great getting back with the band again. Burying the hatchet, playing some shows and earning money again. You’ve played gigs all over the world. What is your most memorable session to date? 3 sell out shows at The Brixton Academy last year. The response from the crowd was amazing. Its as if we’d never left! f***ing brilliant! Any place you’ve not yet performed but would relish the opportunity to do so? Yes, Afghanistan – And I’m not having a laugh! Zombies have traditionally been slow and cumbersome. There is now a trend of fast moving zombie strikes. What is your opinion on this? What the F*** you on
about???? Whatever you’re on, I want half of it! Star Wars or Star Trek and why? Star Trek – I’ve always had a thing about pointed ears. Which current musical artist do you highly rate and which do you think are a complete waste of ear real-estate and why? DUB FX – He’s brilliant with what he does with his mouth. Mind you, so am I. High Flying Birds and Beady Eye. Next question! When kicking back and taking some time for yourselves / yourself … Who do you listen to on your headphones? There’s a lot of great music around at the moment, as I say, Dub FX is good, but there’s not one particular band I listen too. Shaun... 21 days in the jungle! Fancy that again? Why not! f***ing brilliant! Bring it on! You’ve musically collaborated with some serious audio experts. Whom ‘dead or alive’ would you like to produce your next album if it were possible. Elvis!!!
You’ve all had an extremely hedonistic existence. If there were no obvious health issues attached, would you continue the ‘24 hour party people’ lifestyle or is it now more about, fitness, family and friends? Absolutely! But I’ve to go careful now as I’ve got kids in school and university. To be honest, as a band we all let it get out of hand! But yeah, we are the 24 hour party people and we are coming to your town. The Stone Roses and Noel Gallagher have both recently taken to the stage here in the Middle East. The obvious question ‘and one I must ask’ are you looking forward to your Dubai performance? Of course we are! I’ve been to Dubai myself a couple of times and so have other members of the band. In fact Rowetta was there with The Stone Roses a few weeks back. We are sounding better than we ever
did and really looking forward to the world tour. Dubai will be our first stop before shows in Asia and Australia. Do you guys fancy doing a parachute jump with the Infusion Magazine crew at Skydive Dubai when you are here? Are you f***ing having a laugh or what???? So Infusionites... This will be your chance to catch one of the greatest and most amusing UK bands in its Full and ORIGINAL line up. Shaun Ryder, Bez, Gary Whelan, Rowetta, Paul Davis, Paul Ryder and Mark Day. Friday, April 26th at The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium – The Irish Village. Tickets out, about and on sale now with the usual suspects! Feature & Questions by Marty Metcalf – Answers by Shaun Ryder

BOX!
With a tightly packed schedule, we were extremely lucky to grab a few moments with superstar jock Tiesto, ahead of his Sunburn gig at the Dubai World Trade Centre Arena on Thursday, March 28th.
Welcome back to the city, you've played here several times – any special memories? Absolutely. I'm always impressed by the energy the fans bring in your great city. It's always a memorable experience for me. You played one gig in Abu Dhabi were the roof partially caved in, have you had any other potentially life-threatening accidents happen while Djing? Not really. We have a great team that ensures things run smoothly. Sometimes there are things out of your control (like weather) but we always make sure the shows take place with safety first in mind.
We loved your last album – Club Life: Volume Two Miami. Tell us why Miami, is there a special connection? It's a unique part of the world. It's unlike any other part of the states with the tropical climate but also because nightlife plays such an integral part in how the city operates. It's always been like a second home. You're playing in Dubai as part of a Sunburn festival tie up What's the festival in Goa like, should it be on our clubbing bucket list? It's a great event and Goa has always had a huge impact on dance music. There's history there. It's absolutely an essential festival.
In terms of production what can we expect for 2013? New releases? Remixes? Collaborations? I'm working on a new installment in my Club Life mix series and my new artist album.
And what should people expect from your set in Dubai this time around? A truly fantastic time – from the music to the production – my fans will be partying all night long.
We interviewed Hardwell when he came to Dubai recently. Tell us a bit more about your relationship and how it all came about? We had an immediate connection being that we're both Dutch, he's talented, and I love working with young producers.
Dust down your glad-rags and head over to The World Trade Centre Arena on the 28th for a night of anthemic booms and bass with the worlds number one!
DE LIGHTFUL DE SONG We thought it would be a spanking idea to catch up with SAFAs Afro-Beat Jedi ‘Culoe De Song’ who’s heading to our sandy shores on March 29th at Dek On 8, The Media One Hotel.
What was your big break into the music scene? At home, it was probably my first collaboration with Black Coffee back in 2007 and my participation in RBMA Barcelona in 2008. I took my music to the rest of the world after that. You’re playing an Africa House series in Dubai – how would you describe the music you’ll be playing? Good music. My interpretation of good dance music. What’s people’s biggest misconception about South Africa? That it's a lost world. But actually, it's the heart of the world. Take a good look at the World Atlas. Is there a common African House sound? I suppose so. Africa has its own rhythm and it is found in all types of African music in most cases, from slow tempo, mid tempo and fast tempo. If it was made in Africa, chances are, you'll feel that. South Africa had a large part to play in the history of house music, how much do you know about the history? Well, I know that South Africa has been probably the largest consumer of house music from a while back, supporting all types of sounds from around the globe. Even our local old classics have a great house/
disco influence, arguably an American impression, which is where house music began. You’re signed to Innervisions, an impressive label – how did that come about? Innervisions first signed "The Bright Forest" for a global release. Different people regarding the track contacted them and I guess they responded to the hype. It was a blessing. What’s in the pipeline for you this year? Back home I'm releasing my third studio album, "EXODUS". That's my main focus this year. I'm also preparing a young booklet around the album, for my fans. Recently, Innervisions released "Stig Boardersman" as part of their secret weapons series, that's been exciting for the beginning of 2013 What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? "Continue doing what you do". And where do you see yourself in 5 years? On earth working on my bigger brand! What can we expect from your set in Dubai? Expect to move!!! A ‘Good Friday’ soiree to certainly not miss, block the date in your diary for this one…

Music News... Sasha Savages Deadmau5 & Plastikman
EDM superstars Richie Plastikman Hawtin and Joel Deadmau5 Zimmerman agreed that ‘today’s electronic dance music suffers from the pursuit of commercial success’, the Wall Street Journal reported this week, in a review of their joint appearance at SXSW. Deadmau5 also revealed he’s ‘always aspired to be a lot more underground and less big room sound’ at the SXSW conference debate as well as confessing ‘without the mousehead . . . young listeners might not be interested’ Commenting on Twitter, UK house legend Sasha seemed unimpressed. “F*** EDM Deadmau5/Hawtin tell ‪#SXSW commercial $$$ killing electronic music,” he grumbled. “Great advice for young producers. Without a silly hat no one will listen to you ‪@deadmau5”, he added. Zimmerman and Hawtin’s attack on commercially minded EDM producers came just days before Vegas’ newest uberclub Hakkasan confirmed they’ll be paying him $425,000 per show for a season of performances which will see him lining up alongside Steve Aoki and Tiesto (who’s being paid just $250,000 per set). “With all the projects I have going on right now, I’m so excited to be back in Vegas doing what I love to do best,” Deadmau5 commented on his new deal. Sasha’s new mix compilation ‘Involv3r’ is out shortly.

Look and Listen Pet Shop Boys have a new label The Pet Shop Boys have a new label and issued this statement today about leaving former EMI offshoot Parlophone: “We are hugely proud of the new album and are very pleased to be working in conjunction with Kobalt. We’d like to thank everyone we’ve worked with at Parlophone over the last 28 years both in the UK and abroad. When we signed to the label in 1985 we had no idea how long and successful a relationship we were embarking on. However it is also exciting now to commence a new phase working with a new team in a new business structure and we look forward to a creative and equally fulfilling relationship with Kobalt”.

I must be honest from the start… This album has completely blown me away. Populated with such a sublime selection of great quality House tracks, it’s hard for me to say which one couldn’t be released as a ‘stand-alone’ single. It is incredibly rare to find such awesome music in one place! Sonny has collaborated with some of the industries greatest to serve up what is possibly the best, Deep and Soulful House collective I’ve heard for a long time. Cajmere, Gene Farris, Dajae, Deep City Soul are just a few of the HouseMasters Sonny has featured on this glittering and delicious voyage. 15 soulful licks, that is 1.4 hours worth of sheer lollipop dreams. If you like your House Music dipped in caramel fudge, sprinkled with brilliant production, usage of ‘real’ instruments and honey rolled vocals. This trip is for you!

PETE TONG – It’s All Gone Pete Tong & Skream – ITH Records
Hmmm … When I saw this for review I was expecting the worst. Just because there’s a music conference in Miami every March, doesn’t mean you have to record release dash for cash! However, after a few listens, I must say it isn’t that bad. The tune choice is great, if not a little obvious. Digging the ‘Chicken Lips-He Not In’ track. There are two ‘long’ mix-downs featured, one from Tong the other from Skream. I suppose its OK to ‘whack’ in the car during the day when the universal UAE radio is so boring. Is it just me? or do all UAE radio stations share a single box of records?

Versatility is a much lauded skill, and with residencies dropping funk and soul at Loca, day-time grooves at Nasimi and peak-time beats at Trilogy under his belt, Conan Liquid is a real jack of all DJ trades. And on his first release for Infusion Records, he proves to be a master of jacking house – in the strict late 80s sense – as this body-popping near 9 minute epic demonstrates. With shuffling drums and the best top line Frankie Knuckles has never come up with (plus two deep, down and altogether darker dubs on the B-side), it’s something that you could see Joey Negro or Louie Vega dropping at peak time. Which apparently, they have. A dream debut for Quincy and Infusion Records. Conan Liquid – Feat. SCSI – The Basement Tapes Volume 1
The second release from the ‘Infusion Records’ portfolio offers up two retro enriched melodies. ‘I WANT YOU’ gives me the sensation I’ve hopped into a DeLorean and travelled back to 1984. The production value is solid, an aesthetically ear pleasing ‘Nu Disco’ bump with plenty to shake your tail feathers to. OK 48K COMPUTER is the second offering on this slab of audio goodness. It actually sounds more 88’ than 84’ .. Rolling beats and very ‘old skool’ key skewers, make the simplicity of this track addictive and certainly moistens my special man creases.

One thing you might not know about me is... I’ve been making house music since i was 17 years old. My first track “Weakness” was released on several UK Garage CDs one of which went Gold in the UK! My worst ever job was... I used to install Soda Fountain Machines (the soda dispensers you see at fast food restaurants and bars). Taking out the old soda machines in dark damp cellars of hundred of year old pubs in UK was a very ‘sticky’ business My favourite ever record is... Thats an impossible question to answer.. theres just too much goodness in the music world! DJing is much like... Cooking. You need to have all the right ingredients, but you also need to have the skills to bring it all together in the right quantities and at the right time. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Good, but theres a lot of room for improvement I’m really proud of... My baby girl Keira. If I could change one thing about anything it would be... Everyone would look on the bright side of life I can’t live without... Positive people My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Still loving my job after nearly 2 decades is pretty big If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I’m really happy in the one we are in. But if I had to choose it’d be the 70s, and i’d have an afro If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Tony Blackburn I’m not a politician but... “War is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate” - Marvin Gaye

Chicago Teen Shoots Self In Groin Playing With Gun, Fibs To Cops, ‘Ninjas Attacked Him!’ After playing with a gun and accidentally shooting himself in the groin Friday, one Chicago-area teen was left with injuries both his body and his pride. Police say the 17-year-old of nearby Elmwood Park was cruising the city’s Northwest Side with his girlfriends Friday evening when the gun he was handling accidently misfired in the back of the car and injured him in the “ahem” lower groin region. Instead of coming clean to police, he claimed he was attacked by Ninjas.

Zombies Selling You A Basketball!
So it’s the zombie apocalypse and your neighborhood is being overrun. Quick, grab your... sporting goods? Before the zombies attack you with... golf balls? Then run for the nearest... stadium? No, this Norwegian commercial doesn’t make any sense. But like so many recent zombie movies, the production values are so high that it basically doesn’t have to. Despite its gratuitous comical nonsense, viewers in Norway complained after the commercial for sporting goods store “XXL” aired during family programming, calling it disgusting and stupid. The commercial will now air after 9pm, where it will target teenagers and other zombies. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpf0VjPE-Ig

T-Shirt: Try Industries Jeans: Rabbie Denim www.rabbiedenim.com shoes: Puma Jacket: Zara Watch: Bell and Ross Hat: New Era
How would you describe your style? I’m just as happy in a suit or jeans and high tops depending on the event or my mood that day. Mostly when I’m working at Nasimi Beach I’m fairly casual. Puma look after me so I usually find a lot of things from Mihara Yasuhiro, Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen. Whatever the occasion you can’t go far wrong with a fitted blazer a good pair of jeans and some nice shoes. I really enjoy the bespoke experience from start to finish from picking your fabric and design to watching a piece taking shape through the fitting process. Who do you follow? I don’t pay much attention to shows and collections. I will read magazine features and reviews for inspiration, but I’m not particularly faithful to one brand or another. Best shop in Dubai? For all my tailoring I use Junaid Khan at Regent and Brummell in Media City. There are a few interesting places in Dubai like The Cartel, The Level Shoe District and The Zoo that I know of and like but I mostly shop online. My current obsession is watches I really like Momentum in DIFC they stock some great vintage stuff (I can’t afford). Have you always dressed this way? No. I’ve had some shocking taste in clothes over the years. My friends still laugh about my canary yellow lucky shirt, which I swear to this day had magic powers. Strangely enough I was obsessed with labels early on in my teens, then went through an urban sportswear phase. I now bounce between man, boy and gentleman. One day I’ll grow up!

New Salik toll gates to be installed on Dubai’s Safa Park running track DUBAI: In response to heavy pedestrian congestion, Dubai’s popular Safa Park running track is soon set to become part of the city’s Salik road toll collection system. Unveiled this morning, the first phase of the scheme – entitled Run Salik Run – will see two gates installed o the 3.5-kilometre track, one by the park’s main entrance and one halfway around. “Run Salik Run is part of our ongoing efforts to streamline traffic on the Safa Park track, which has seem a huge rise in numbers thanks to various fitness initiatives and the annual post-Christmas drive,” said Run Salik Run director Abdulla Thompson. Run Salik Run will apply to both runners and casual strollers who take to the track, but charges will differ depending on the speed of each user. In a bid to keep traffic on the track moving at a steady rate, a twotier payment system has been installed. Anyone travelling at 10kmph or over will be charged AED2 each time they pass through one of the gates while those going slower will have AED4 deducted. “Our state-of-the-art technology will work out your average speed across the whole track, so don’t go thinking you can just put on a quick spurt as you go under each gate to pay less,” said Thompson, who added that security guards would be employed to ensure people “didn’t simply jog around the outside”. To build awareness of the new toll, a publicity drive will be launched next month entitled ‘Check Your Cash Before You Dash’, which will see leaflets handed out to joggers, together with specially adhesive Salik tags that can be affixed to sports clothing. “From day one, we’re going to be issuing a strict AED200 penalty system for those who pass under the gates without a Salik account or enough money loaded up to pay for their journey,” warned Johnson. Depending on the success of Run Salik Run, the second phase – ostensibly set for 2014 – will see three more Salik gates installed on the running track. The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

ANGRY MONKEY Name dropping – a Dubai affliction You monkeys, no in fact you idiots I wouldn’t even use our own description to describe you; it’s insulting to primates. But seriously name dropping, its prevalent in Dubai, its an epidemic, a pandemic! While recently swinging around at an ‘original’ sporting based event literally so my names were dropped by ‘flashy’ workers and ‘ambassadors’ the ground rumbled. Do we give a banana? Hell no. Here’s some things you need to know; Sharing a space for 30 minutes with Kylie Minogue does not make you more interesting, having a polite and awkward conversation with Kanye West and telling everyone makes you a douche and having Simon Cowell’s mobile number doesn’t make you popular or famous yourself – we don’t CARE, in fact it just wants to make us run away from you, far, far, far away, back to the treetops with the jungle breeze and the chilled out apes. So please Dubai for animal and mankind WE beg you STOP IT NOW, no one cares and you just sound like another banana shaped object…
