A Note From Charl Chaka
Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Charl Chaka Contributing Editor: Laura McCrum
It’s been a while since I’ve been back on this page and what better way to return than with the landmark of 200 Issues! That’s a milestone in anyone’s book! Not bad for a team “working in a cave” according to one competitor heh? Its been a roller coaster ride for the Infusion Team, but I think we can proud of the bi-weekly pocket dynamo hitting the Dubai & Abu Dhabi streets. Every week there is an excellent team working behind the scenes, bringing you events, entertainment, music, nightlife news and more! But none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for you. You the reader, you the party-goer, you the artist, you the dj, the movers, the shakers and the groovers. Thank you for the support over the last 200 issues! I’m not going bore you with what is listed in this issue. It’s easy enough for you to find this out by yourself. Just get paging, get reading... Until next time. Thank you Music. You saved my Life! Keepin it real. Charl Chaka

What we did
Guetta @ ATLANTIS David Guetta, Live @ Atlantis was always set to be a top night. It was an evening of EDM and the warm up DJ’s were rocking it tight. Smokingroove kept the crowd spicy till Guetta took the stage. His set read like one of his album sleeves but there were a few new tracks thrown in for good measure, giving variety from his last UAE gig. By far One Love and Play Hard got the biggest response from the 10,000 strong crazy fans screaming and cheering incessantly. Akon’s impromptu cameo for Sexy Chic. Nearly popped an eyeball vein in a nearby revelers face! You gotta give it to Guetta, he is an entertainer. He effortlessly interacted with the already excitable crowd, flirting with his boyish charms. One could argue it is easy to win a crowd of sycophants, but judging by the hoards of happy punters leaving Atlantis we wont argue that he delivered a show worthy of his fans.
Looking Back Sandance @ ATLANTIS
With a line up for this seasons closer boasting the likes of Nightmares on Wax, Keane, Idris Elba… yes Idris Elba, Groove Armada and song-bird goddess Florence Welsh, we had to give Sandance a peep. Sandance was great. Was it because we were in the VIP section? Big thanks to Absolut for that blessing. Maybe it was because the traffic wasn’t as bad as we anticipated? Maybe it was the company we were with? Or could it have been because Florence and the Machine were incredible! With her sometimesimpeccable church like choir voice every track they played sounded as good as it does on the CD. We caught the feint intro of ‘Dog Days’ after being in the loo and did a mad dash out of the cubicle and onto the beach to revel with the 12,000 strong crowd. Nightmares on Wax were the perfect warm up to get us in the mood. Keane delivered a hit laden hour, which reminded us just how successful they’ve been. Groove Armada were pretty much Groove Armada, playing their classic samples over new beats. All we can say is, this is how you close a festival season (in Dubai anyway...) Good job! Also ‘The Killers’ & ‘The Wailers’ next. What a way to start off next season!
Friction @ q underground
The Drum and Bass scene in Dubai can be very fickle. Bring over a veteran of the scene and you appease the hordes, you don’t and the hordes feel unfulfilled. Well neither this nor heavy weight festival Sandance deterred AudiOasis from booking one of the new guard in Friction and we for one were happy they did. Playing to an intimate crowed of 200 true Drum and Bass fans, Friction provided a full throttle master class utilizing 3 decks and some seriously dirty bass lines. Double dropping tunes and showcasing some real technical mixing skills he took to the decks like a seasoned veteran. As one punter mentioned “Friction’s set was a roller coaster you just didn’t want to get off”. Highlight of the night was Mr Gremlin and Friction who double dropped ‘Voodoo People’ by Prodigy (Pendulum remix). Each utilizing a different tune for the drop. They had the crowd jumping around like they were on a giant trampoline. More please.
Swan Lake @ dubai world trade center
We at Infusion are an eclectic bunch. So we took a moment to check out the Royal Moscow Ballets performance of the classic Swan Lake. After a sell out Cirque du Soleil we thought it would be hard for the twins at Alchemy Project to top such an extravaganza, however once again they’ve managed to surpass expectations. In front of another sell out crowd, the performance ensued with the spectacular Royal Moscow Orchestra following lead from their conductor who animatedly built the anticipation of crowd. As curtains opened a flurry of ballerinas leapt to the stage with beauty and grace, they maintained an impeccable high energy, dramatic performance from start to finish which along with the Orchestras rendition of the Tchaikovsky classic were the standout components of the production. Bravo guys… Bravo.
NO 1 Events Friday Brunch @ Rixos
Definite contender for best party brunch in Dubai! It’s a brunch like no other. The food was a beach barbecue, salads, sushi station, cheese station, unlimited drinks plus more. However unlike any other brunch we’ve been too, you also have full access to beach facilities, can swim in the sea, play beach volleyball, outdoor table tennis and relax in Jacuzzis, all in the comfort of your board shorts or bikinis, with good tunes pumping in the background is there anything else you want from a Friday afternoon? Oh, did we mention the hot chicks running around spraying you with water guns? A real Ayia Napa style, beach party vibe. The urban music can be credited to the No.1 residents DJs who kept it going with a combination of UK Garage, RnB, Hip Hop and Urban flavours. All in a great day out, we will definitely be back.
Looking Back
Say What Dancefloor dictionary “Double D-P” - Designated Dance Partner: A good friend who regardless of where you both are in the club will bob, weave, slide and two step right to the centre of the dance floor as soon as the first 4 beats of ‘your tune’ drops. True DDP’s have been known to drop drinks, bounce the bar, incur injuries and lose their place in the queue for the bathrooms in the name of front and centre rug cuttery. Old Jokes Home “Before I went to bed last night I pulled my boxers off” “You spoil those dogs”, said my wife.
Short and tweet Britney Spears “I get to go to lots of overseas places… like Canada”. Daniel Radcliffe “I used to be self conscious about my height but then I thought, ‘f&%* that, I’m Harry Potter”.
Ivana Trump, upon finishing her first novel. “Fiction writing is great. You can make up almost anything” .
Christina Aguilera “So, where’s the Cannes Film Festival being held this year?” In numbers While the likes of Busta Rhymes, Twista, Eminem, Rebel XD are famed for throat numbingly fast lyricism the current Guiness Book record holder for ‘Fastest Rap MC’ is Chojin (a.k.a Domingo Edjang Moreno) who rapped 921 syllables in one minute an astounding 15.35 syllables per second! Incidentally Twista and Rebel XD are previous record holders.

Andy Buchan, Editor 7 years ago, I made a big decision. I could either become a full time news journalist and write for the Newark Advertiser in the UK (they had a cat-up-a-tree story in one of their issues, I kid you not), or jump ship, head for the sunshine and become a music/ nightlife journalist in Dubai. Nearly a decade later, and I’m still here, and still as passionate about music and clubbing as I was then. And I’m lucky enough to work for a magazine that believes in the same things. Infusion Magazine also started around the same time I arrived in Dubai, and has grown from something hastily stapled together to become the go-to magazine for nightlife, entertainment and all things DJ-related. To hit 200 issues is a milestone in any magazine’s history, but to do so in an emerging city like Dubai where magazines, not to mention our staple of clubs and bars, open and close with alarming regularity is testament to the magazine’s popularity. I’m not sure where I’ll be in another 7 years, but I know for certain that Infusion Magazine will still be here, letting readers know about the city’s best Djs, bands and clubs, and doing it with a cheeky smile on its face.
Charl Chaka, Managing Partner
Infusion is free fortnightly magazine devoted solely to music, nightlife & entertainment. As newly arrived DJ, I discovered the 1st issue in 2004. Since then we’ve grown from a 20-page magazine stapled together known as the “throwaway guide!” to a widely respected publication with a key roll in Dubai’s nightlife industry. Infusion has also grown as a group with a culmination of various media and entertainment divisions including: Marketing & PR, Infusion Events, Infusion Entertainment (Performers & Talent Consultant), a Record Label, Graphic Design & Copy Writing & of course our online platforms www. infusion.ae & Infusion TV. All of this is thanks to a wonderful group of people, who are passionate and week in and week out dedicated to Infusion Magazine! In know particular order, a BIG shout out to our current Infusion Team: Andy “YouTube” Buchan, Allan “Design Guru” Tinsay, Vip “Show me the money” Patel, Monique “We can do it” Belle, Nthayi “Backbone” Tshele, Jason “Firestarter” Renaud, Conan “Makin Beatz” Liquid, Olly “Big Mouth” Woods, Safe & Marko “Brothers with a Groove”, Paz ‘IT” Swartz, Richard “Collection” Perez, Benjie “It’s done” Jacobs and last but not least my partner in crime Leon “Woef Woef” Gifford. These are the people that make Infusion what it is today! Much Love and Thank You! It’s been an honour to be part of the voice & history of Dubai’s nightlife industry. Here is to another 200!

It’s been a while since it was a while since we witnessed the wisdom of our old friend Mikey, but thanks to a broken-down traktor, a broken condom and a reduction in the global demand for demerarararara sugar, he has obliged himself to step-up, strap-on and ejaculate some warm spunky nuggets of inane wisdom, previously unbeknownst to the general pubic. So, without further hair-do, here is a concise analysis of the number 200: • the exact number of Heavenly virgins required to give Tiesto sufficient peace of mind to finally go and suicide-bomb his own sense of self-worth • the number of seconds you need to hold your breath for before you can successfully get rid of hiccups (and/or herpes, I forget) • the number of incisions required in the operation Lady Ga-Ga underwent to hide his man-junk • David killed 200 Philistines and brought their nosehair back to King Saul to become his son-inlaw. (1 S 18,27) Fact. • In Roman Numerals, 200 is ‘CC’. Or Charl Chaka. Just sayin’.

Julius Papp Infusion is celebrating Issue 200 at 360 on Thursday 23rd May. Our man Julius Papp will be on the decks. We had a word… Where are you are this exact moment? I’m checking my emails while in the studio, finishing up on a remix of one of my older tracks, which came out on King Street entitled “Your Life.” One thing you may not know about me is…? Is that I regularly listen to 70’s classic rock and 80’s New Wave. It keeps my music diet balanced.
3 reasons to become a DJ? In my case, it was just one really – for the love of music – and to be able to share my taste in (club) music for an appreciative dance-floor – quite euphoric in feeling. Being a DJ also offers you travel opportunities that come with touring – a very sweet perk that can take you all around the world. 3 Reasons not to become a DJ? • If you like to go to bed early and can’t stay up late. • If you have sensitive ears, don’t become a DJ – it’s a health hazard as far as hearing is concerned. • If you don’t like to fly, don’t become a DJ – flying is part the job description. If you could hop in a Delorian which moment would you go back and enjoy? I would probably time travel back to the late 70’s to experience the club scene when disco was the “sound of the moment.” That was the era that spawned dance music as we know it today. Julius Papp plays at the Infusion Magazine 200 Issue Celebration Party, 360 on Thursday 23rd May.

RiRi on the way Love it or hate it the Cirque du Scandalishious, ‘Rhianna Diamonds World Tour’ is all set to light up Abu Dhabi on Sat 19th October. The “#1 Person On Facebook” is taking a break from her on again off again ‘aint nobody’s business’ romances and designing ghetto boom boom clothing for River Island to do arguably what she does best… sing and shake her thang. We find ourselves curiously intrigued/excited – there is no denying it will be an astounding spectacle – not to dissimilar from the car-crash Beiber phenomenon – but we cringe in the knowledge that from now until then there will be countless adverts, gutter press and media machine cog turning to appease the masses. Not to mention funny stories from DJ fielding Rihanna requests at a plethora of club nights! Regardless we welcome you to Dubai RiRi and thank you in advance for making our job easier when looking for future spice and scandal to write about.

YASALAM AFTER-RACE CONCERTS Have you ever thought of a movie and that very night it comes on TV. Had a craving for Shepherds Pie and it’s the lunchtime special at your local. Well just the other day the radio was playing ‘Enjoy the Silence’ and we thought, ‘We wonder what Depeche Mode are up to these days?’ only to minutes later receive word that Depeche Mode are Abu Dhabi bound. Spooky! While many of DM’s 80’s contemporary’s were long sold off to the glue factory, Depeche Mode are enjoying electric tour dates after a career boasting 13 top ten albums and having sold over 100 million records worldwide. As the grand finale of the Yasalam After-Race Concerts, Depeche Mode will be closing 4 nights of music from the cream of Arab musical talent from the UAE and across the Arab world. So whether you win or lose big on the horses a little nostalgia from "the greatest British Electronic punk trio in history.

Looking Forward Last Tango in Dubai…
Well hardly the last… more like the 5th Dubai Tango Festival and no Marlon Brando in sight. Tango fever is set to take Dubai by storm from the 22nd to the 25th May and if you don’t know the difference between Tango Nuevo and Argentine Tango or want to brush up on your ‘giros’ and ‘boleos’ then sign up for workshops with international maestro Mariano ‘Chicho’ Frumboli. Hailed as the first ever known street dance, Tango is a hot, vibrant and sensual art form. The lavish Gala Milonga on the 24th May at Maydan Hotel will prove just that. To register for workshops, or to book seats please contact Eleanor Brodie on 050 451 6281, or Maya Saliba on 050 622 3679.

Demarco is an accomplished multi-talented entertainer hailing from the shores of Kingston, Jamaica. Behind the passive persona is a musical connoisseur that’s responsible for crafting some of the biggest international hits such as Fallen Soldiers, Steady Wine and Love My Life. He has one of the most recognized sounds coming out of the island. Demarco initially started as a producer plying his trade in the American Hip Hop and R&B arena before segueing onto the local Reggae and Dancehall scene. He soon launched his own career as an artiste and almost a decade later is classified among the industry’s top tier acts. The singer recently added the title of entrepreneur to his growing portfolio with the launch of his own recording label ‘True Gift Entertainment’.`
DEmarco
Jamaican
For those who don’t know… who is Demarco? I consider myself an entertainer. I love music whether producing or performing and success is a driver in my life. I am a family man and they are a huge inspiration to me. Three words that describe you? Multi-talented, Driven, Committed How did you get started in Dancehall? I started by composing rhythms (beats) for several of the industry’s most recognized names and production houses. Eventually with aspirations of becoming an artiste I began to record on some of those same beats in an effort to bring my others talents to the fore. What or who are your influences? I can’t point to a particular individual, however some merit has to be given to the pioneers before me, also life experiences is another of my major influences, not only mine but those of the wider world.
Flavour
You are an accomplished Producer and Performer. Which do you prefer? Yes I am, I do enjoy acting in both capacities as artiste and producer, however being an artiste comes with nicer perks, nonetheless I love both aspects of the job equally. You’ve already worked with the likes of Olivia, Styles P, Sean Paul, Bounty Killer and Elephant Man, who else would you like to work with? I think Beyonce and Jay-Z would be a nice addition to the catalogue alongside some of the icons of Reggae. Can you tell us what you’re working on at the moment? Currently, my new album which is still untitled, also I’m preparing to unveil my official website ‘Demarcomuzik.com’; and launch a new school initiative in Jamaica. Your track ‘Fallen Soldiers’ is a poignant dedication to
soldiers who have given their lives in the line of duty. Did you expect it to be so big? Initially No! But I always try to sing music with purpose and substance. The growth of that song has been incredible and I am immensely pleased that it has touched the lives of so many.
What is next for Demarco? Upping the ante on my career; increased presence internationally through the introduction of ‘BRAND DEMARCO’ into new markets and music space, globally as we are presently doing in Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Thanks for your time. We look forward to seeing you in Dubai. To win a chance to spend a weekend with Demarco all you have to do is attend any of the upcoming Yard Rock Friday nights before May 31st.
The Mouse got Might If you don’t yet know Mighty Mouse you most likely have lost your way from the world of nu disco and remix delivery. Pretty much every social sphere has been waxing lyrical about the plethora of outstanding remix and re-work array featuring the likes of Prince, Madonna, Gorrilaz, Fenech Solar, Ali Love, Kate Bush, Jose Gonzalez and Gill Scott Heron and that’s without even mentioning his club hits Junglefish, The Beast (Disco Battle Weapons Volume 1) and Between the Pavement and the Stars. Set to embark on a grueling world tour, the phenomenally busy and credit laden Mighty Mouse chat’s to Infusion about musical obsession and nonconformity.
Who is Mighty Mouse? That’s just little old me How did your journey into music begin? I played guitar a bit when I was younger, then I went to party once and played on someone’s decks. I was hooked and wanted to be a DJ. Then I got a program called Cakewalk for the computer and started making beats with it. It took me a while to actually make a tune but I
was already DJing lot’s at mates parties, in my bedroom, where ever I could spending every penny on vinyl records. I was always surrounded by music when I was growing up; it was on more that the TV. Often noted that in a short time you’ve delivered an impressive output of work — what’s your secret… energy elixirs… youth of small children? I’m just obsessed with it, it’s my life, if I’m not touring I’m in the studio pretty much every day. I think one of the key things is to know when to be creative and when to be technical. Finding that balance I feel helps output. It can be very frustrating trying to be creative when you’re not in a creative mood.
not to mention the 4th in the line of Disco Circus. How exciting it this time for you? Very exciting and I’m loving every second, the touring has been crazy this year and it’s about to get even more hectic, I’m pretty much in the US for 3 months. So much music to come out too over the summer which I’m really excited about, including a new Mighty Mouse single and Du Tonc single. I’ve taken a 5 week break from DJing to get everything done. Is cheese a must on your rider? Definitely, I love cheese. They say Music has changed the world. How has music changed your world? It’s given me a career. I’m just lucky enough to be able to make it and play records to people. It’s enabled me to travel and live a life I never dreamed of when I was young. But at the same time, it has its difficult side.
The diversity of your remix collaborations is astounding but must require a varied approach to each project – what’s your approach and do you have a favourite remix? I normally play around with chord progressions first then sit and stare at a wall until something pops into my head. I need to have the idea in my head before I start. Mighty Mouse was never about conforming, so I don’t. I just do what feels right.
You’re away a lot from home, and you spend 90% of your life in an airport. Do you have plans for your Dubai tour date? Tom Cruise scaled the Burj Khalifa – fancy it? Haha, now that sounds fun. But I’ll be saving every ounce of energy for a massive party J.
You are on the cusp of fullscale international tour dates and still putting out mixtapes
Thanks for your time – we cannot wait to see you in Dubai. Me too!

Music News... Pet Shop Boys Return to the Dance Floor
The Pet Shop Boys unveiled details of their upcoming album ‘Electric’ this week, which producer Stuart Price said has been recorded “using various techniques between old school synth, and drum machine programming, and new school computer mangling”. Chris and Neil confirmed the album “is very much set on the dance floor” “Our latest album often evolves as a response to our previous album and, whereas ‘Elysium’ had a reflective mood, ‘Electric’ is pretty banging,” they explained. “And working with Stuart Price on a studio album is something we have wanted to do for a very long time”. Pet Shop Boys- Electric is out on July 15.
Slayer Guitarist Dies from Spiderbite
Jeff Hanneman from seminal death metal band Slayer has died three years after he was bitten by a spider and contracted a flesh eating disease. The 49yr old guitarist died from liver failure, which linked to necrotizing fasciitis, the devastating illness he picked up after being bitten by a spider as he relaxed in a hot tub. He described becoming ill within an hour then seeing his ‘flesh corrupting’ on the way to hospital. Undergoing emergency surgery he ended up spending months in hospital having skin grafts and extensive treatment. Publishing an open letter on the band’s official website, “Slayer is devastated to inform that their band mate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at his Southern California home. Hanneman was in hospital when he suffered liver failure. May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)”
MUSIC BITES If ‘Digital Love’ was your favourite song on ‘Discovery’, if you like Hall & Oates, Fleetwood Mac and Quincy Jones, you’ll love this album.” Mixmag’s Deputy Editor Duncan Dick sounds ever so slightly ambiguous about Daft Punk’s uber-hyped upcoming album.
Look and Listen Diplo Disses Dutch EDM DJs
Mad Decent EDM supremo Diplo, while commenting on the state of America’s EDM scene predicted, “today’s wave of mainstream superstar DJs could soon be in trouble”. Dance music is so interchangeable,” he suggested, “It’s a bunch of Dutch DJs with the same haircut. You go see a dance stage at a dance festival and I’m bored out of my mind,” he continued, “That’s not going to last very much longer, because kids see that it’s the same crap every single time.” His comments came just as Electric Daisy Carnival announced they’d sold out all 345,000 tickets to their upcoming Vegas event, despite not announcing any DJ details. The up and until now definitive EDM event then announced the first draft of performers which as well as featuring more than a few identically styled Dutch DJs also includes underground tech/ house types Adam Beyer, Booka Shade, Claude Vonstroke, Dubfire and Umek. Diplo isn’t the first to rage against the rise of the superstar DJ and we sure as Disco aint gonna hear the last of it, but the way we see it is - it makes fun reading ;)
See more CeeLo.
Grammy-winning R&B singer CeeLo Green is joining the world of reality TV. Imaginatively named “The CeeLo life” will be granting full access to the rotund crooner and his creative partnership with Goldie Mob. Bandmates Big Gipp, Khujo and T-Mo reunite nine years after the release of their last album. Goldie Mob are credited for creating music that put Atlanta and southern American hip-hop music on the map. Their last release was 2004’s One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show but the men recently reunited to work on Age Against the Machine. The reunion album is set for release next month. Commenting on working with Goodie Mob again, ‘It was just a matter of time, its very faithful and we’re a family, and you know we were never separate from each other completely. So our coming together is somewhat of a testament to our elasticity if you will. That’s what I call it.’ The CeeLo Life is scheduled to premiere in 2014.

Album Reviews... Christian Smith - Omakase soundcloud.com/christiansmith
For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
Where you’re from, and where you’ve been play a large part in inculcating your sound. Take techno don Christian Smith for example: Swedish by birth, he’s now based in the sunny climes of Sao Paulo, with months – probably years, actually – of gigs and continent hopping in between. And that mix of Swedish function and Brazilian funk is at the fore on his latest album out via his own label Tronic. Opener ‘Dorian Gray’ is, similarly to the famous painting its names after, a timeless take on techno full of propulsive drum work and an echoing top line. And unlike other dance music producers who try to create a fully rounded, artistic album, Smith has focused his energy entirely on the dancefloor, so there are plenty more cuts like ‘Dorian Gray’ to be found: ‘House This House’ is 3am Detroit techno, ‘Indulge Me’ is an Eric Prydz-like peak time groover while album closer ‘Thrust’ is a fist-pumping, ‘please don’t let it end’ techno moment that will be the end track to many a techno set this summer. Phoenix – Bankrupt www.wearephoenix.com/ For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
While Daft Punk might have stolen the Gallic limelight in recent months, almost as exciting is the news that another French institution have released their fifth album. And while their career trajectory might have been a lot slower than the ‘Da Funk’ duo, Phoenix are now a festival headlining proposition in their own right. And Bankrupt is them being quintessentially them: which is to say, they’ve kept their big, bold hooks that served them so well on breakout album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and ramped them up even further. The electronics are set to stadium (as you’d expect from an album produced by Zdar from Cassius), notably on album stand out ‘S.O.S. In Bel Air’, while ‘So Cool’ and ‘Drakkar Noir’ sound like a French cover band doing the best songs the Strokes never wrote. It might lack the stand out pop hits like ‘1901’ and ‘Lisztomania’, but taken as a whole, Bankrupt finds the French four piece’s account firmly in the black.

Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito
www.yeahyeahyeahs.com/
Yeah Yeah Yeah’s fourth album, their first in four years, makes the listener work hard for their treats. It’s not that the album isn’t laden with musical goodies: opener ‘Sacrilege’ is a gospel-choir, art pop rock and roller, while ‘Despair’ and ‘Wedding Song’ are haunting, slow-burning embers that reference the high points from previous album Blitz. But tracks like lead single ‘Mosquito’ and the James Murphy produced ‘Buried Alive’ don’t compare to the New Yorker’s previous body of work, and feel like the band are trying too hard to make the magic happen. Shaun Soomro – Journey To Delirium For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
This is a VINYL ONLY release
The man behind Lick My Deck – Shaun Soomro steps up for LMD012. Journey To Delirium rolls with an intense and infectious hook, floating synths mesmerize while galloping drums keep the pace exploring the conscious state of Delirium. On the flip Theo Parrish’s right hand man – Detroit luminary Marcellus Pittman takes things down a different route by providing a mind-blowing remix. Lush Analog synths, dirty/raw bass lines and playful keys carries the passenger to a dream like state where the FXHE and 3 Chairs man takes you beyond the beyond!

There was the Big Day out 2005 in Auckland with my good friend Kas ‘Tha Feelstyle’ Futialo, vibing on-stage with Fat Freddys in Shed 6 also in 2005 and with Lukie D in Samoa in 2009. And the worst? Never a worse gig – 2 people crowd is worth the show the same as 5,000 crowd. Artist motto? Bring it! Dubai’s music scene is? Young with room for growth and improvement. The best lyrics of all time are..? You can fool some people some time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time. What’s the one thing you’d like to request on your rider? A mic that works. Talent shows are...? Fantastic platforms for artists/acts to showcase/test their accolades if they have not had the chance to do so. If we could change one thing about Dubai’s music scene... So this is 3… More platform for live music open to all acts/genre (there’s a few jamming bars around but not enough to create an environment of it). More investment into quality/ affordable studios for performers/ singers/artists to record demos and materials. Invest more into locally produced events the same effort thrown behind international big-names.
Jabra
Revo Wireless
If headphones were in high school cliques then Beats would be hanging out with the cool kids, Sennheiser mingling with the intellectuals and Jabra would be marking its turf with the inbetweeners.
Unaligned with celebrity star power and at a price that won’t break the bank it would comfortably fit in with those occupying the middle ground. That’s not to say that the brand most well known for their wired and wireless headsets haven’t out done themselves on their venture into the premium headphone market. Jabra have taken the best of wireless technology and applied it well to a set of comfortable, easy to use cans. With a unique app that allows you to enjoy all your favourite tunes in Dolby Digital Plus and turntable touch controls integrated into the side. These headphones allow users the freedom to skip through playlists, pause music and answer calls in rich full spectrum sound without rummaging through their pocket every 5 minutes like a horny teen. Plus you won’t require the neck muscles of Mike Tyson to carry these cans as they are remarkably lightweight, but possess the durability of a heavyweight due to their aluminium frame, steel hinges, and shatterproof headband. All in all a good first foray into the premium headphone market from Jabra. Jabra Revo Wireless: DHS 912 www.jabra.com

Weird News... Like a hole in the head
A man who thought he just had a runny nose finds he was actually leaking brain fluid. Joe Nagy assumed the Arizona climate was causing allergies so for over a year and a half he never sought medical advice. Eventually, after mortgaging his house for Kleenex, Doctors told Nagy he had a hole in the membrane that surrounds his brain from which fluid was leaking. Surviving a meningitis scare and key-hole nose surgery Nagy is alive and well after doctors sealed the drip hole with glue! Doctors commented ‘This is one of the more common conditions to be missed for a long time... because so many people have runny noses.’
WEIRD BITES The curves in web analytics are actually smoother than those they were used to in particle physics. People are, in a sense, more predictable than the quantum mechanics of particles. Quantum physicist turned Facebook research scientist Stephen Wolfram reveals that data culled from the online behavior of 1 million Facebook users shows ‘people are more predictable than particles’.
Zombie Apocalypse I’ve got my plan laminated
David Lory Van DerBeek, who is running for Governor in Nevada in 2014, recently posted a screenshot from the FEMA website of a supposed Zombie UFO Crash Disaster full-scale exercise drill. According to his website the exercise was planned in Moscow, Idaho involving 100 participants. However, after VanDerBeek posted his article it was pulled by FEMA. “Personally, I do not believe in UFOs or zombies but is quite likely that our government has created a bio-chemical weapon that can induce zombie-like behaviors in humans and therefore assist in a mass murder event to promote global depopulation without taking the blame.” Claims VanDerBeek. I now no longer regret dedicating hours making my zombie apocalypse plan.

We join our good friend and respected scene cat, Conan Liquid to chat threads and jacket collections. Proving that a DJ and their style can be as unique as their sound. Befitting of this affable gent. I think I have two styles. I definitely wear different clothes when I go out on my night off, than when I DJ. I don’t tend to buy clothes in Dubai. I like to search out labels and clothing that might be a bit more exclusive. There are a few people like Acne Jeans and LNA that sell bespoke items and their styles are right up my street. DJing is all about comfort. I’m an aging B-Boy so sneakers, jeans, teeshirts, track suit tops, hats is standard dress. Puma help me out with a lot of what I wear when I DJ. I love the boots I am wearing in my casual outfit. Space age technology. If I was still a breaker these would be my choice. They’re also great for riding BMX. Flat-soled but enough padding and comfort for those jammed frame-whips. When I go out on my nights off, dinners, parties, etc, my retro MOD and two-tone styles come through a lot more. With jeans it has to be Selvedge denim. Acne and the Japanese vintage Levis are amazing. A nice vintage Fred Perry polo or a tailored shirt is classic MOD. I love brogues from Tricker and Church. The one thing I miss about living in the UK is wearing jackets every day. I have a wardrobe full of classic leathers, bombers and Baracuta Harringtons. If it even looks slightly chilly in Dubai I love an excuse to wear one. Overall, I would say my styles are dominated by my quest for something a bit more exclusive, a bit different. Retro cuts, modern fabrics, and always tailored.
THE MIXOLOGY OF
“FEELGOOD” Have you noticed how the cocktail scene in Dubai is getting ever more sophisticated? Have you noticed how the cocktail scene in Dubai is getting ever more sophisticated? Discerning connoisseurs of all that is delicious and liquid can experience a world of mixology delights and creative fusions. Where better than OKKU? – New style, new school Japanese dining that also serves cocktails to delight and excite. One such cocktail too recently premier as a house favourite is aptly named Kimochigai which the barman tells us is Japanese for “Feel Good” and guaranteed to put us in a good mood! In part down to the unique and natural feel good ingredients of Piper – mood elevating libation. The barman enthuses as he mixes my Kimochigai, that not only in OKKU, but the Dubai cocktail scene is simmering up nicely. Thanks to a heady mix and vast range of fresh fruits, herbs and spices available and an influx of some of the best “mixologists” to Dubai.
While classics like the Mojito, created for the sweaty climes of the Caribbean, still hold court in the desert heat, a whole new range of signature cocktails, like Kimochigai, are being created using fresh fruits, herbs and spices which are as eclectic as the Dubai population itself. Unique climate, ultra cosmopolitan population and situation as a trade hub, Dubai mixology is no longer following the trends from New York and London but is starting to create its own style in which exotic fruits and fusions of east meets west are key. Piper itself is a UAE developed brand, as is OKKU so… the Kimochigai really is part of this bold new world for Dubai mixology and since there is nothing quite like a mid-week cocktail to wash away the 9-5 blues, the good news is that Dubai has the ‘feel-good’ factor covered. Scientists on verge of creating metal “more exclusive than gold or platinum”
Middle East: Businesses and luxury lovers are said to be in high anticipation today after a team of scientists claimed last night to be on the verge of creating a “the world’s most exclusive precious metal”. The arrival is expected to revolutionise various segments of the service industry across the region, with many companies and organisations having already indicated that they would ditch common ‘platinum’ or ‘gold’ top-tier levels in favour of this new discovery. “It’s going to completely overhaul the cinema experience,” consumer trends expert Hala Verlotta told The Pan-Arabia Enquirer. “With this new priceless mineral, supposedly luxury offerings such as Gold Class are going to simply feel outdated and cheap. Cinema owners will need to act accordingly.” There were similar feelings from within the regional nightlife scene, with many club owners claiming they would be developing more luxurious areas of their venues to cater to this new level of exclusivity. “Our Platinum Level Guests are going to wake up to find they’re no longer our most valued customers,” said Dubai-based Club Smug promoter Stryker Pose. “They’re going to have to spend a bit more to keep up.” The news comes just weeks after economists warned of hyper-inflation among the Gold and Platinum levels of exclusivity. Excessive usage by businesses looking to satisfy the need of many consumers to feel superior has seen the perceived values of such metals plummet to all-time lows, with many having to revert to levels such as ‘Triple Platinum’ to maintain their superficial value. Some experts had suggested that saturation was sending Gold and Platinum heading in the direction of the now muchmaligned ‘VIP’ status, which one claimed was “so common it makes me feel nauseous”. The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? No not yet. But I did use Felix the House Cat name once pretending I Whenever I use it, I get in trouble was him at Trilogy! I don’t know how it worked but it did. My nickname at school was? Coco Lapin. Its the rabbit in the Barkho (half of my family name) French version of Winnie the Pooh. Have you ever injured yourself at work? 7 years ago I fell down from the No, but I got electrocuted with the DJ booth. The cash register came mixer many times down with me and felt on the poor bartender’s foot. I never saw him again. It’s not big and clever but… Testing a new track to a tough My home studio provides me with all crowd is a challenge I always take the happiness that I need. My best claim to fame is… Playing along with well known artists.
