A Note From The Editor

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Charl Chaka

How do you solve a problem like no content? Well don’t ask me as each fortnight Infusion Magazine has more juicy goodness than Mr Del Monte hugging a mango tree. The problem I’ve been facing is what to keep and what to cut? I’ve been spoiled for choice and I’ve delighted in sinking my teeth into all that Dubai has to offer. As a ‘newbie’ to this town working on Infusion Mag is undoubtedly the quickest way to find our where to go, what to do and where to avoid. A blessing in a town of endless events! A highlight for me this issue was getting to interview LTJ Bukum and having a good old chat about his life and love of music. I am inspired and in awe of his skills and knowledge. I’ll be darned if I miss Global Funk on June 20th It’s been my absolute pleasure to don quill to parchment, particularly when writing about a subject I LOVE… Music. A massive Rawra McFun THANK YOU to the team here at Infusion, for welcoming me into the family with such love and occasional piss-taking. That’s when you know you’re family! 2 Issues in and looking forward to the next. Laura McCrum

Looking Back

What we did

A heart felt thank you!

It was great to see everyone come out in force for the 200 Issue Party. Nice to hear that so many people love our magazine and use it as their guide to all that’s happening in Dubai. We thank you! As it is you, the readers, we do it for and are proud you like to thumb through our glossy pages! Easy going and ever smiling Julius Papp played a lovely little set. Keeping the dance floor full and flowing he picked up new fans that night. The cup-cakes and free shots went down a treat and it was a pleasure to see so many happy people. Even Angry Monkey was happy that night, pulling some chimpy flex on the dance floor - a pleasant change for our usually pissed off primate.

Looking Back Drop Dread @ Casa Latina

India… Known for the Taj Mahal; Curried Cuisine; I.T. Specialists and… Reggae? You may not think the latter deserves to be in there but the Reggae Rajahs and a full house at Drop Dread would beg to differ. The first outing for The Reggae Rajahs - Mo City in the UAE and it went down a treat to the multicultural mishmash of misfits at Drop Dread. With a newly fitted sound system, that wouldn’t seem out of place at Sandance. Mo City’s Reggae and Dub bass lines had the crowd Skankin’ and the roof almost caving in. A great night was had by all… well, except the Ibis’s F&B Manager who had to deal with the numerous noise complaints!

A Slice of Jazz

Shyly tucked away on the ground level of The Movenpick Hotel is a cool little Jazz night that wouldn’t be out of place in New Orleans. Real people, listening to real organic music. No sparklers, no pretentious dicks trying to cop off with the cute waitresses (and there are a few cuties in there btw) just a community of music loving nerds just like us. Its a simple setup: Drums, open top grand piano, bass and a few mics setup on a blue lit stage at the front of the restaurant. They played everything from Maxwell, to Amy, to Al Jarreau classics to blues and anything thing with a cool jazz twist to it. Our favourite was a special edition of Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 by a buxom brunette who, from her attire, had obviously had been looking forward to this all day at work. Think Joan from Mad Men style. DEFINITELY a place to check out on a Tuesday night. More people should know.

Looking Back DJ Marky @ Globalfunk 10th Birthday

DJ Marky @ Globalfunk 10th Birthday If there is a Drum and Bass DJ on this planet more technically adept than Marky we are yet to find them. Providing a 2 hour master class of noisy, bassy, Latin fuelled goodness, you would have been forgiven for thinking you were at the DMC Mixing Championships when Marky stepped up to the plates. Utilising a plethora of skills Marky had more tricks up his sleeve than David Blaine and Dynamo put together. At one point, holding a Technics deck upside down whilst scratching as the crowd watched on, in awe. A skill accidentally learned in Brazil when smoking while spinning! Combined with the mic work of SPMC it made for a spectacle we were happy we didn’t miss. This was the perfect way for one of the longest running nights in the UAE to celebrate a decade of Drum and Bass in the region and celebrate we did. The support acts put on a sterling performance from Samba boy Anderson Lima to Mach4 “the oldest man in Drum and Bass” as professed by his partner in crime and the always hilarious MC Olly Wood who hyped up the crowd in a way only he knows how. The t-shirts went down a treat too. Roll on LTJ Bukem on 20th July!

Gala @ Cavalli

Cavalli was the perfect way to rewind back to the 90’s. There’s pretty much no way you wont have heard her famous signature chart topper ‘Freed From Desire’. Sure it’s a one hit wonder but boy can that song make you want to don your palazzo pants quaff some big hair and throw-back 90’s style! With the Cavalli Club transformed into a grunge disco with flashy lights and royal chandeliers to fit the mood of the Italian singing sensation – Gala, had everyone up on their feet. The queen of retro whipped up some classic, 90’s dance moves in her era appropriate leather jacket and skinny jeans, with a monochrome top. The epitome of classic music and fashion – forget Gaga, if you want the real thing, it’s Gala!

Looking Back

Say What Old Jokes Home Q: Why does Snoop Dogg carry and Umbrella? A: For tha Drizzle Weave not got your hair! Beyonce’s hair-plane adventure. Nice to hear that it’s not just us mere mortals who have trouble with luggage on airlines. British Airways accidentally sent Beyonce’s hair to Brussels, instead of Budapest. B’s hairdresser had to be flown to Brussels to seek it out and return it in time for the gig.

Short and tweet Justin Bieber “I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously.” David Guetta “Justin Bieber has the potential to become a very credible artist.” “Wethinks both ladies doth protest too much!”

Dubai-ous appeal? Could it be the beginning of the end for the TOWIE lot? Amy Childs and various others from the reality show are no strangers to being denied entry from clubs, but they suffered a terrible indignity in the UAE. Their group was turned away from the Dubai outpost of Movida as they are “not really on brand”. Given that Movida’s clientele is predominantly shiny poseurs who wear sunglasses inside, it’s a fairly damning snub.

Krafty Cuts

Cirque Du Soir Loves Breakbeat Boutique ft. Krafty Kuts, Brought to you by Infusion Magazine. A night of Funk, Breaks, Hip Hop and all the tasty little bits in between. Tuesday 25th June. Free entry for all.

The First Rule of Fight Club...

Reinvention is key to longevity in the world of music but who’d have guessed we see some heavyweights of Dubai’s DJ scene turn murder on the dance floor turn to white collar paggery. DJ’s David Craig, Charl Chaka, Nthayi Tshehle and event supreemo Monique Belle are putting down the record bag and picking up the boxing gloves for Fight Night 10. White collar boxing has increased in popularity and this annual Dubai showcase is no exception. It’s been 8 intensive weeks on training and coaching and Infusion Magazine will be ringside cheering on Charl ‘smack em up’ Chaka, Monique ‘saved by the’ Belle, Nthayi ‘can’t see em coming’ Tshehle and David ‘ribs of steel’ Craig as they endure three 2 minute rounds of mayhem. Kicking off on the 7th June at the Habtoor Grand Hotel. Fight Night 10 is a rock ‘em sock ‘em not to be missed.

Looking Forward Sandance Season Opener THE KILLERS!!! Las Vegas born rock champs are coming to kick off next season at Sandance. 11th October is a diary date you need to make. Plus we hear rumours of a certain ‘Canned heat’ funk god on a future Sandance line up! We love Sandance - keep up the good work chaps!

Rumour has it Pacha is to open at Trilogy sometime in September. Lady Lea representing for true DJ’s of female origin and not a Swarovski Headphone in sight! Surprising and relatively cool temperatures for this May in Dubai making the last of the season parties and gigs most bearable.

People standing around on dancefloors. Dancefloor is for the dancing. The bar is for the posers. Get your shuffle on or move it! Overly hyped promotion. If the venue has a capacity for 200 people it’s not going to be Dubai’s biggest gig EVER! Lax building maintenance – The Infusion crew have suffered days with no water in the office. FORCING us to go to the nearest pub to use facilities - Ah well!

Launched by Roberto Cavalli himself, Cavalli Club has redefined the definition of glitz and glamour. An Opulent venue with a clientele to match, Cavalli has branded its reputation as the stylish party location. Fusing style and retro, weekly night, Flashdance Wednesdays has been serving up week after week of 80’s and 90’s fun times establishing itself as a midweek must go. Stepping back in time Flashdance Wednesdays is set to bring 90’s High NRG Techno mad-house scene champions 2 Unlimited! Set to take the stage in a transformed setting Ray and Anita will bring you an evening of No Limits and retro dance moves. Feel free to Vogue it up in true glamour, shoulder pads and big hair. John Collins to the max. Get ready for this! It’s neigh on impossible not to know a 2 unlimited track! During their short but high impact career 2 Unlimited released mind invading tracks like ‘Get Ready for this’, Twilight Zone’, ‘Tribal Dance’ and of course ‘No Limits’. Tunes that were guaranteed to seep into your cerebral and nest there like a repetitive second personality voice that had you singing their song for days until inevitably driving a hot poker into your ears or banging your head off a brick wall. Now we’re not saying

2 Unlimited were not good at what they did. Perhaps the only mainstream techno acts that the underground could tolerate but they also delivered high-energy spectacles that had gig goers bouncing for days. Fronted by smoothly handsome yet unpronounceable Ray Slijngaard and the beautiful gal with a powerful voice Anita Doth, and produced by Euro-trance beat geniuses Jean-Paul DeCoster and Phil Wade, 2 Unlimited were a

perfect blend of front stage cool and infectious production. At the forefront of 90’s fashion, 2 Unlimited set trends and broke moulds and are undoubtedly responsible for bringing Euro-Techno out of the dark sweaty underground and onto the clean cut Top of the Pops mainstream. After 16 years in the wilderness…. Well ok not wilderness but running record labels and categorising a plethora of 90’s outfits. 2 Unlimited are back and enjoying their second year of international tour dates and 90’s revival. Perhaps a nice reminder of the glory days and a chance to see exactly how much their music impacted the world. Lets face it you can’t attend one American sporting event without hearing a 2 Unlimited track!

We welcome you to Dubai 2 Unlimited crew after all it is nice to have some rose tinted spectacle nostalgia of a time when colours were bold and fashion made no sense. Has anyone seen my hypercolour t-shirt?

Few can make bold statements without mortgaging their ass when cheque cashing, but when Republique proclaimed “We're Starting a Revolution, and You're Invited” we felt enthused by the back up motto “Music Makes Us Equal”. That was almost 2 years ago and although the revolution may be changing direction it 'aint over yet. As this season closes on Republique we invited owner and amiable host, Samer S. Hamadeh, to share the good times and bid farewell to his human friendly music den.

Thank you for the

Music

Can you give us a mini history on Republique? We opened our doors in June 2011 at a time when almost every single club in Dubai was an imported franchise. The dream I would say was to create a second home for music lovers in Dubai. Describe the vibe? Republique is a college bar that behaves like

a nightclub. Everyone knows everyone. Instead of sparklers, we project music videos & live music. Instead of noses up in the air, people keep their hands up in the air. People dance. They dance for hours. Its just fun. Music and DJ’s? I was very particular about our music policy, and even though I am not a DJ myself, I did play for the first few weeks. Then I met Dean Curtis, our resident DJ & resident musical genius. If people love Republique, it’s mostly because of him. We’ve had guest DJs like maDJam, Andy Buchan, Schooly, Dion Mavath, Bliss, Mr Shef Codes, Jeeno, Ridz, and Mo’Funk creator Andre Swanepol- they all played a pretty different set at Republique than they would have somewhere else. Most memorable night or moment? I would have to say our opening night. Nothing beats the rush of starting something new and inviting friends and family to be a part of it. I even remember our first guest was Dion Mavath. He messaged me saying “You donut you’re late to your own opening night.” I still have that message saved somewhere. Why are you closing? Rent dispute. After months of negotiations we decided that Republique would lose its soul if

we agreed to pay a ridiculously higher rent – that would affect our prices and ultimately our loyal customers would have to pay the price. That goes against my vision for the brand. So I’d rather we move somewhere that appreciates our commitment to affordable luxury and a snobbery-free environment. One thing I am proud of is that we’ve become known for our music policy. That was literally all I ever wanted out of this experience. The next Republique will be an upgraded version of the current one, but it will stick to its roots- good music & an unpretentious crowd. What is next for you and the Republique crew? On a personal level I am working on growing Xylobands in the Middle East (in case you’re wondering check out xylobandsme.com.) On a nightlife level, I have a very exciting new lounge project in place - Infusion will be the first to cover it when I’m ready to make the announcement! Republique will also be moving somewhere new but we are not in a position to say when or where yet. Exciting! Glad to hear Infusion will have the exclusive on your future ventures. Thanks Sam and good luck. Republique closing party will be held on the weekend of 27th & 28th June.

For our readers who may not know… who is LTJ Bukem? Electronic musical DJ, producer and record label owner specialising in drum and bass among other forms of music. Where did your DJ name come from? Way back in the 80’s I had some buddies older than my usual crew. One of them used to call out “bookem Dano” - a line from Hawaii 5 o. My name is Danny and so when I started to DJ I took the name, spelt it differently and had the name DJ Bukem. A few years on the LTJ got added which doesn’t mean a lot, I just liked the sound of it. How did you get started in music, production and dj’ing? I studied piano, trumpet When it comes to the world of DJ’s, and drums from the age of ‘multi-skilled’ and ‘multi-talented’ 10. My teacher had a big interest in Jazz. Lessons seem too small expressions to were the normal classical describe this man’s musical training scales but at the expertise. LTJ Bukem is a Musician, end of a lesson he’d play DJ, Producer, Label owner and deep me something like “Piece Piece” by Bill Evans and through music lover. Renowned “Lenore” by Chick Korea, on the Drum ‘n’ Bass scene yet tracks both bring qualified in practically every genre. these me to near tears when I If you were to cut him in half like a hear them, and are 2 of stick of rock the words would read, my all time tracks. I WAS HOOKED. He brought ‘I LOVE MUSIC – FACT’.

“Bookem

me his Rhodes keyboard and mini moog’s - musical Danny was born. I started to buy all sorts from jazz, rock, reggae, disco and soul. In my mid to late teens whenever friends parties came along I had records, so Danny the DJ was born. In the early 80’s it was all about the sound system. Ours was called Sunshine and we would play 70’s soul, early hip-hop, reggae, disco, this led me into the acid house scene and the rest is history. I came into contact with the sampler and soon released my first 12 inch, the next year 1990 made a track called ‘Logical Progression’, and then Good Looking Records was created releasing our 1st track, “Demons Theme” in 1992. Working across so many skillsets must be taxing. What keep you going? Simple, love of the music and the fans that enjoy it with me.

then one day more tracks started to arrive leaving the 4/4 beats totally out and that was me hooked into what I guess then was early Drum and Bass.

Tell us about shifting from House Music to Drum ‘n’ Bass. What motivated that? I still love house music but I guess drum and bass grabbed me because of the beat aspect. When I was playing house I loved tracks that got released with the beats mixed just below the house 4/4 beat, a style called hip house,

Favourite quote? Many but love this one by Aldous Huxley “After Silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music”

How has the music industry changed since the 80’s? So much! The clubs that used to exist then no longer do, and all the new venues and things like the festivals that are so huge and global nowadays that never existed back then. The different formats of playing and selling music, from vinyl to CD, to mp3 and computer. Communication has grown not just phone and fax anymore. How the DJ has arisen to be as big if not bigger in some cases as top bands. What are you most proud of? I guess blessed as opposed to proud but to be living in the times I have, experiencing an amazing evolution in musical creation

Don’t miss LTJ Bukem at Globalfunk @Music Room on 20th June.

Dano”!

DJ Sueside became the Wu Tang official DJ after wowing RZA at a gig. A bow well strung this turntablist DJ’s, Produces, Teaches and Tours yet keeps his roots as a family man. With an up-coming gig here in Dubai that is tingling excitement throughout the Hip-Hop community, Sueside is sure to set the Music Room on fire come June 7th.

For those who don’t know, who is DJ Sueside? Hip-Hop DJ, Grand Master, Teacher, Turntablist, Producer, Father, Single Parent, Veteran, an Wu Tang Aficionado guaranteed to rock a spot on the 1 n 2’s. How did you first get into music? I come from a musical family. My uncles formed a band called ‘Lewis Flower Power Funk Soul Band’ in the Caribbean in the late 60 to 70’s. I was born into that and my older brother was a follower of hiphop in the early stage and around 82/ 83. I started as a little b-boy. You are the official performance DJ for Wu-Tang members, The RZA, Raekwon and Masta Killa. How did this partnership form? It all happened on tour. It was during a rza and masta killa tour

with Cilvaringz. Rza ask me to come dj for him and so it all started we did the ‘Birth of a Prince’ tour and many other tours followed after that. As a performance DJ how closely do you work with the artists when creating the show? Very close we sit down together to make the show / set. In some cases because of traveling no time to sit down so we have to base on skillz… we anticipate and improv. You embarked on you own tour in 2012, how did that compare to ‘official performance DJ’ for Wu-Tang? Well before djing for Wu, I’ve always been a turntablist and all-round party dj, the gigs I got were all dope hip-hop witch is cool to me. Don’t sleep on me though. I got a lot more in store. What is it like working as a European DJ on the American scene? Well it’s more as a European DJ working with American artist. Most of the shows I work with were outside America. I did a tour from New York To Los Angeles with RZA. It was privilege and blessing to be able to do that as a European hiphop DJ on the American scene. You’ve DJ’d and toured internationally for 27

years – what is your most memorable moment? I’ve been touring since 1986, Internationally since 1999 most memorable moment is getting called out of bed by Method Man to jump on a private jet with the Clan on route to Paris. They literally swung by the nearest airport to me to pick me up. Nuts. Finish this statement… “Music is… A universal language, and Wu is a universal movement. We for the kids yo.” One thing you can’t live without? I would say music, but I gotta say my kids...anyway, like I just said above, Wu is for the kids, so you know that. PEACE! Catch DJ Sueside at the Music Room on Thur, 7th June.

Music News... Tributes and tears

May has seen the passing of two great contributors to the world of music and the outpouring of love and tributes to them is a testament indeed. Legendary New York house DJ Peter Rauhofer has died aged 48, from a brain tumour. Grammy award winner and dance-floor joy bringer Peter drove the early days of Tribal and Twisted Records as well as *69 label producing gazillions of major label remixes. Tributes poured in from the likes of Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia and Frankie Knuckles stating, “Respect to a great producer. Sleep well, Peter,” Daft Punk vocalist Romanthony passed away this month also. The ‘One More Time’ vocalist was the soulful voice behind Daft Punks biggest hit, up until current summer smash Get Luck. Already a cult figure in the music world due to his debut album RomanWorld. Tributes from Dirty South, MUSIC BITES Pete Tong, Felix the House Cat and Daft Kanye West has Punk have been moving and poignant.

Hollaphonic holla-funk it!

Lots of goodies coming from Dubai’s dance floor duo, Hollaphonic this month! Their 2nd single Found You (Stay alive) premiered this month. No surprise from these talented chaps who are officially the first-ever dance music duo to be signed to EMI in the Middle East. Following on from their first single, ‘I don’t want it to end’, Hollaphonic are gearing up for their debut album, Empire of the Sun due out this June. If their singles are anything to go by the album is set to be a must have summer bouncer. Link to single: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=b2DGiy4k_pM

backed out of attending his wife, Kim’s baby shower. Sources say that Kanye is not comfortable with the private lives of him and his unborn child being filmed for reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians’. It’s refreshing as this is the first sensible thing Kanye has said in a long time. Their baby is due for release in July.

Look and Listen Timberlake collaboration with Mumford and Sons sets the soundtrack for Coen Brothers Grand Prix win at Cannes.

Cannes film festival is known for awarding plaudits to movies documenting musical genius such as Wladyslaw Szpilman in The Pianist so it comes as no surprise that the Coen Brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis won the prestigious Grand Prix. Starring Justin Timberlake and Oscar Issac, Inside Llewyn Davis is inspired on the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk. The film centers on Davis’ posthumously published memoirs and features music and performances from Mr. Timberlake and Mumford and Sons. The film is scheduled for worldwide release on December 20.

The problem with hype is living up to the expectation. And the problem with Daft Punk’s album is the next level hype has to meet the expectation of fans raised on two decades of dancefloor anthems. And in short, their fourth album (excluding the Tron: Legacy soundtrack) is not a dancefloor friendly album. While they might have revised their dance music template, looking back to the classic 70s disco scene to push their sound forward, R.A.M is desperately short of dancefloor ammunition. Spread over the 13 tracks, only the Pharrellfronted ‘Get Lucky’ and ‘Lose Yourself To Dance’, the expansive but bonkers ‘Moroder’ and breaks-infused album closer ‘Contact’ could be considered nightclub material. R.A.M is an album made for the pre-iTunes generation. It’s Daft Punk attempt at educating the EDM massive, and it’s the sound of them embracing collaborations as never before to try and create something bigger than concentrated hits of dancefloor bliss. At its best, it’s challenging, beguiling and rewarding, but the album can also be terribly pompous and slow (nowhere more painfully than on Chilly Gonzales’ collab, ‘Within’). But this categorically isn’t a dancefloor album, and therefore struggles to live up to the hype. This is a flawed, but ambitious body of work that’s definitely worth investigating for die hard fans. For the rest of us, we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed for a remix album. Andy Buchan

Conan Liquid – The Fugu EP (Infusion Records)

House, Techno https://soundcloud.com/conan-liquid ‎



Techno whizzkids Simian Mobile Disco released an album last year called Delicacies, in which they explored their darker, 4am side of their sound, and title all their tracks after hard-to-find – and hugely unusual – foods. And it seems Conan Liquid has been inspired by the same love of the weird and wonderful, as his latest EP is named after the poisonous Japanese pufferfish, the Fugu, and also explores deeper, darker territories. ‘ Fugu Hiki’ is a moody, tech-heavy slice of off-kilter goodness, while ‘Tora Fugu’ is a tribal-tinged workout that you could see Riva Starr dropping in one of his sets. And rounding off the EP is ‘Diodon Drums’ which strips the layers back to reveal warehouse funk and military precision drums at its core. Simple, but very, very effective.

DJ Booth: Gabriel Green

Clean cut and packing a strut this weeks DJ Booth guest is DJ and Producer, Gabriel Green. Hailing from Amsterdam but with a penchant for Cowboy hats… que the song ladies, ‘Save a horse, ride this cowboy’

One thing you might not know about me is… When I’m feeling uninspired in the studio, I wear my cowboy hat from Texas and then everything feels better. My worst ever job was… I learned so much from all my previous jobs. I think you shouldn’t do anything you don’t like, I never did. My favorite ever record is… Do You Know Where You’re Coming From by Jamiroquai, a hidden gem. All the elements in this track are so playful and work really good together, absolute freedom! DJing is much like… Cooking, painting, dancing, laughing, crying, base jumping, sex, weight lifting, playing any instrument. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Like a teenager; discovering, growing fast, always changing. I’m really proud of… The way my life is evolving. If I could change one thing about anything it would be… NOW!!! I can’t live without… My cowboy hat! My biggest DJ achievement to date is... That I’m still playing. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… NOW and play tracks from any decade. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… Masters At Work for sure! My mixing technique is very much influenced by them, since I started in the early 90’s. They don’t mix music, they blend it. Although my style evolved into something different, how I bring music stays the same. Catch Gabriel Green at Strictly Vynil, 360 on Thur, 14th June.

The Boxtones

It’s notoriously hard to break it as a band these days, however one such band, took a risk and took a different route. Scottish-Canadian band The Boxtones, box-stepped into music consultancy freeing themselves from the cover band circuit and giving them time to work on their debut album, ‘In the Pockets of Clowns’. Set to be ‘an eclectic mix of high energy pop rock, clever hooks and catchy melodies’ we invite the Boxtones to the Soundstage for a slice of pudding proofery.

How would you describe your sound? We are a rock band. All the band members’ backgrounds are pretty varied. This shows on the new album, as we have thrown in some punk and soul, along with time signature changes and some really catchy pop melodies. Then there are a couple of acoustic songs and anthem type songs too. It’s kind of like we took everything we loved and threw it in a pot and it came out like the new album! Being musicians in Dubai is… Expensive!! No really, devoting all your time to perfecting your art, playing shows, rehearsing, writing, recording, travelling, meetings, sound checks – it’s a full time job. What’s the best gig you’ve played? My Music X Festival had a big, big stage – full light rig and a camera crew (including a floating camera), that was pretty good. The performances for the American forces in the Gulf are a blast too. We’ve done a lot of shows abroad before we came here, big shows, little shows, good shows, not so many bad shows – In our opinion though, every show is the best, as the saying goes – you’re only as good as your last gig – I think that applies throughout the music industry. And the worst? There are no worst gigs - only worse bands. Band motto? Good things come to those who wait, but great things happen to those who work their asses off! The best lyrics of all time are... “You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need” or “My Humps, My Humps, My lovely lady lumps – check em out”… Nah the first one What’s the one thing you’d like to request on your rider? A Jägermeister Station with 4 shot glasses (HA!) Talent shows are... Ridiculous mindless entertainment If we could change one thing about Dubai’s music scene... Have more live music venues that are specifically for Dubai’s original bands, from all genres. ‘In the Pockets of Clowns’ is due for release in October 2013 www.boxtonesband.com

Sennheiser

MomentumBlack

Headphones Sennheiser headphones: “Impeccable sound quality, sturdy engineering, but look like something your Granddad would wear.”… Well, not anymore!



With the introduction of the Momentum Black, Sennheiser has finally decided to hang with the cool kids. These cans have the premium quality audio that the German brand is renowned for. Presenting stylish minimalistic design synonymous with Sennheiser, however they now come in a sleek new look that incorporates the signature Blacks of this season’s fashion collections. Attention to style seems to be a factor that has been lacking from Sennheiser’s arsenal in the past. Why worry about style when you are the best on the market? The ‘sound engineer look’ became iconic in their previous product range and is still well loved, but the Momentum addition to the Sennheiser family is like flying by private jet as opposed to steerage! These headphones have the tri factor. Sound, comfort and style. Not only, boasting breathable leather ear cups, a light weight brushed steel frame and minimal, sleek design that make these as cool as they are comfortable to wear. As expected from 7 decades of honed German engineering they really excel in the sound department too, producing a balanced, rich and true sound that caresses your ears like velvet kittens purring bass goodness. Optimised for iPhone use the cable incorporates a slim line remote that allows you to play, pause, skip tracks and answer calls with just one touch. These cans would be the perfect partner for the ever growing populous of commuters from Public Transport punters to International DJs and Airport producers. Retailing at AED 1,499 we decree they are worth every dirham. Available in JUMBO stores and other leading electronics retailers.

Looking Closer

Weird News... Shake it like a Polaroid

This seems less news and something we dance floor lovers have known for a while but when academics produce research that validates such knowledge we giggle in delight! From Justin Timberlake right across the scale to Christopher Walken if you can shake it, you can take it. Less we forget Beyonce and Shakira! But now research has proven once and for all that there is a direct correlation between dancing skills and sexual sucees. From analyzing dating practices from 19th century Mr Darcy Balls right up to modern day night-club flirting, academics can prove that “clumsiness was sexual suicide” in short if you got no cool heat you wont be WEIRD BITES getting no boom boom beat. Pussy shaver strikes again... Frustrated cat owner Yvonne Birch has pleaded with strangers, “Please stop shaving my pussy!” Her mowhawk moggy returns home after neighbourhood romps minus strips of tabby fur! Cleo the clean Silence of the fish shaven pussy does not seem hurt nor bothered Continuing with the animal theme by the incident. “I wish police in America’s Northwest are whoever did it would perturbed and concerned at a recent own up, or just stop burglary. Teenagers ages 15, 16 and shaving my f***ing cat.” 17, broke into and robbed a home of DVD’s, CD player, jewelry and a BB gun while embarking on a clepto frenzy. Perhaps more worrying was the poor fish found poisoned with hot sauce, mustard and spices. When the teen terrors were later caught they confessed we didn’t want to leave any witnesses so we killed the fish!

Hat: Custom Made, Italy Shirt: Delusional Trouser: Taylor Made, Cuba Shoes: Robert & Lonnie’s, New York

Each fortnight we dig deep into the drawers of various scene cats around Dubai inviting them to share with us style tips and advice and what fires up their threads. This week we wardrobe chat with Cuban dance master Aloy Junco. His dance and fashion style draws from his Afro Cuban heritage boasting vibrant fluency and hip shaking beats. If you asked me to define my style it would be dependant on the occasion. Usually smart casual but the occasion dictates my choice in clothes. I like original styles – something you see more in fashion these days. I wear clothes that make me feel comfortable and allow me freedom of movement. As a dancer it’s important to combine function and style so I usually have my clothes tailor made for my performances. But for social events I buy things that reflect me. Usually by day as I am training I wear sports gear but I do enjoy smartening up when the occasion calls. My favourites are Armani and Massimo Dutti. My favourite items are Luminor watches, Armani T-shirt, Smart Jeans and Cartier sunglasses - and of course shoes! If I had to choose a particular style over all others I’d say Retro Vintage look. But the one style secret I have is… I always wear a red handkerchief in my pocket. It’s my signature I guess. Catch Aloy every Wednesday at Havana Nights at Blends, The Address, Dubai Marina.

Deira emerges as Dubai frontrunner location for Fast & Furious 74!

DUBAI: Following the news that producers behind the Fast & Furious franchise were eyeing up the Middle East as a potential location for the seventy fourth installment of the popular thoughtprovoking existentialist franchise, Dubai’s district of Deira has sensationally emerged as the top choice among film fans. “Just imagine Vin Diesel behind the wheel of the latest supercar while stuck in rush-hour traffic around the Maktoum Bridge and talking without moving his face, as if he’s just had a stroke or something,” said Vikram Reeves, editor of Oil & Gas Middle East magazine’s Entertainment Supplement. “Or how about Michelle Rodriguez doing her standard tomboy routine in a massive monster truck, stuck in traffic around Baniyas Square and having an SUV flashing its lights and honking behind her.” Elsewhere, there were several votes for Dubai’s The Walk or Discovery Gardens around 6.30pm, while several rumours hinted at a script in which The Rock must apprehend a gang of international criminals without needing to top up his Salik road toll account. Keen to stick to geographical accuracy in a bid to trump Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Vin Diesel executes a stunt in which he circles JLT as the sun sets, with The Rock jet skiing across Jumeirah Lakes. Critics already deem Fast & Furious 74 as the best of a bad lot.

The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

ANGRY MONKEY The Angry Monkey loves that Dubai is a hot bed of international talent. On a regular weekend, we can boast Hot Creations this, trance superstar that and some form of bass guru (not to be confused with the execrable Bass Hunter). But some Dubai promoters have taken this international calling to its extremes and started billing Dubai residents as ‘international stars.’ Now the Monkey gets that Dubai is a transient place full of ‘internationals’ – people come, people go, and home is often a Dhs10,000 round trip (yeah, thanks Emirates). But billing you’re guest DJ as Tom Smith (UK) despite him having lived in Dubai for 15 years, or even worse, having a night called International Friday and then booking a plethora of home-grownstars, is taking things a step too far. So the Monkey has come up with a foolproof method of telling if you truly have an international DJ in your midst: ask him how the in-flight service was on his taxi ride over to the gig.

Monkey Out...

The Angry Monkeys’ views are his own, and don’t necessarily reflect the views of Infusion Magazine.
