A Note From The Editor

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Charl Chaka Contributing Editor: Laura McCrum

Remember that last week of school when the teacher gave up on teaching the set curriculum and stuck on DVD’s instead? Daydreaming away your last few days at your desk. Anticipating the long days and late nights to come? No work just endless fun? No more alarm clocks. No more homework just riding your BMX into the sunset and Indian Jones style adventures with your mates. For the first time in a long time I’ve not felt that way! Don’t get me wrong I am very excited for my summer break, however my dance card is full of events and activities that have made me proud of all that’s going down in Dubai these closing weeks. The most whimsical jape of the season! So, hats off to the clubs, the DJ’s, the promoters, the organisers, the venues, the bartenders, the hostesses, the door staff, club goers, party revelers… Everyone who has worked hard to make it happen and entertain the masses. Gladiators, I salute you. We will return on the 4th August with our next Issue of Infusion Magazine but until then stay safe, stay smiling and have a wonderful summer break.

Looking Back

What we did

2 Unlimited @ Cavallli Club

Exactly 20 years ago they were on top of the charts. We never got the see them as a teenager so when the opportunity came around to see them at Cavalli Club, we jumped. The crowd was up for it and Ray Slijngaard and Anita Doth, had them well entertained. A very cool vibe despite the outdated beats however the nostalgia factor made it just right. Anita’s vocal talents are still on par, however Ray’s rapping wasn’t as polished but as soon as ‘No Limits’ dropped the place went wild. In the end the gig was short and sweet. 20 minutes of all their hits. Reliving our youth – definitely worth it.

Breakbeat Boutique Ft. Krafty Kuts @ Cirque Le Soir

The last time we saw Krafty Kuts spin at Sandance, al be it a great set, it was more of a Radio 1 crowd performance. Seeing him at Cirque Le Soir was something special. A proper breaky bash up which had the whole place bouncing. The crowd was different but well up for it. One particular track, which killed it, was a big band brassy remix of “Put a Spell on you” which saw crowd and Cirque performers alike throw up their hands in excitement. Sadly Krafty’s set was cut short due to a high rolling big baws who dropped more than 60,000AED in Cirque that night. He suddenly demanded to have the resident DJ back on. No disrespect to resident DJ MadJam as he plays well to the Cirque brand but cutting Krafty short is proof indeed that money can’t buy you taste.

LTJ Bukem @ Globalfunk, Music Room

What a phat bounce way to end the season for Globalfunk. The crowd, the vibes and incredible music from Mr. Bukem. It’d be hard to expect anything less from the legend that is LTJ. Special shouts go out to Oakley, Tiger, Stamina MC, Ollywood and Ali Altitude for a wicked set. Keep an eye on this guy as he is making big moves in the work of DnB. Globalfunk really has turned it out and produced gig after gig of DnB bounce-fests in 2013. Showcasing different styles and MC’s. We look forward to the return of Globalfunk in September with already penciled in dates, 19th Sept, 17th Oct and 21st November.

Tiger CO-LAB ‘Project Satwa’ @ J+A Gallery in Al Quoz

We took a stroll round Project Satwa and were immediately struck by the wealth of talent and art on display. Tiger CO-LAB ambassadors brought art, music, photography, design and graffiti collaboration to life through a documentary which showcases vibrant Satwa lifestyle. It was a nice touch to have the artists available to mingle and chat to guests as this brought depth and insight into the process of creating this project. Project Satwa is the start of a much larger mission to work with artists and raise the profile of less glamorous, yet vibrant parts of Dubai. You can watch the documentary on YouTube and the Tiger CO-LAB Facebook page and keep linked for news of the next phase of Tiger CO-LAB launched in the last quarter of 2013. Well done Tiger for your continued support of the art scene in Dubai.

International Infusion We took a trip to Zomerpark in Amsterdam

Deep House is a predominant force in Clubland Dubai; but when you think of Holland, a country that has spawned EDM bass churners like Tiesto, Hardwell and Afrojack , it’s not the first genre that comes to mind. That’s why when we headed to Amsterdam earlier this month, courtesy of our friends at Spice Radio, and saw Nic Fanciulli, M.A.N.D.Y and Blond:ish on the menu at Zomerpark Festival, we couldn’t help but pop in and sample the goods. The atmosphere at Arena Park was electric and the friendly vibe projected by the Dutch natives was infectious. It was home grown hero “The Man with No Shadow” who stole the show, the 6,000 strong crowd feeding off every drop and melodic change to every tune he played with rapturous accolade. This is how a festival should be done, people – no posers, no VIP or VVIP areas, no booze-laden ex-pats chatting throughout every set; just fun people with a passion for the music having a great time. The Dubai party scene could learn a lot from our Dutch counterparts. We’ll certainly be making the trip back in 2014!

Looking Back

Say What Coolio made a Foolio A big brother contestant revealed “I snogged Coolio when I was 19. I closed my eyes and pretended it was 50 cent”. Not even desired by a Big Brother fame coveter Coolie is now dubbed – The poor man’s cousin to 50 Cent.

Yeezus Talks? Master of self loving and sycophantic mirror gazing, Kanye West has delivered more face palming quotes in a recent New York Times interview. Just when you think, ‘surely there is no more rancid tripe he can brag Kanye raises the bar on total hogwash and narcissism. Here are but just a few… Claiming he is, “Steve [Jobs} of Internet, downtown, fashion, culture. Period.” “I don’t know if this is statistically right, but I’m assuming I have the most Grammys of anyone my age... I just would like for the statistics to be more accurate”

Jokes Just got a job playing triangle in a reggae band. It’s pretty easy, I just stand at the back and ting. I saw a girl chatting up Usain Bolt, It thought, she’s trying to pull a fast one!

On upstaging Taylor Swift – “It’s only led me to complete awesomeness at all times. It’s only led me to awesome truth and awesomeness. Beauty, truth, awesomeness. That’s all it is” When Ali claimed to be the greatest he was backed up by being the greatest of all time. Give it a rest West. No… just no!

Ramadan guide Ramadan is a holy month of fasting for people of the Muslim faith. Ramadan starts on the 9th of July until the 7th of August (depending on the official sighting of the moon) to help guide you through we put together a list of Do’s and Don’ts and some suggestions of activities you can enjoy.

Do...

► Respect the month, and people fasting around you. ► Make the most of the community spirit. Part of Ramadan is charity, find out how you can get involved and make a difference. ► Try out an Iftar (breaking of fast at sunset) some hotels host Iftar gathering and dinners open to all. ► Try to avoid driving home between 3-5pm. The roads can

be more hazardous as drivers rush home for Iftar. ► Wish ‘Ramadan Kareem’ to your Muslim friends and colleagues. ► Stop smoking. With public smoking heavily frowned upon, it’s the perfect time to give up the nicotine habit. ► Do use the month off wisely. Ramadan working hours (9am3pm) apply, so you’ll have plenty of time to learn a language or finally organize your music collection.

Don't...

► Eat, smoke, drink or chew gum in public during fasting hours (dawn - dusk) - find a secluded area, especially when you’re at work. ► Sing or dance in public. All clubs will be shut during Ramadan, and bars and pubs will only be serving from 7pm till approx 1am. There will be no live music and nothing above background music in bars and pubs. ► Play loud music in your car at home. And forget about that after-party. ► Wear revealing or overly tight clothing. This rule applies throughout the year, but you’ll find its enforced in public areas more rigidly during Ramadan. ► Swear in public. Blasphemy is frowned upon anyway, but it’s particularly insulting during the Holy Month.

What’s going on during Ramadan ► XL Beach Club will be set up as an Iftar tent during the month of Ramadan. The venue will be the only licensed outlet within Habtoor Grand Beach Resort & Spa to be licenced during

Ramadan. All live music and entertainment will discontinue during this time. Opening hours 8pm – 3am daily. In addition every Saturday will become Stellar Movie Night where you can enjoy a top movie throughout the night. The venue will still maintain its 21+ age limit. For more information contact +971 56 640 6161 ► MTV Middle East has announced it’s special Programming Schedule for Ramadan. Ramadan programming will include new episodes of ‘Washington Heights’ and ‘Ridiculousness’, plus the return of ‘Pimp my Ride’ and ‘Cribs’. No music will be played during daylight hours throughout Ramadan so MTV plan to fill their schedule with their most popular shows and movies. Ramadan programming will commence on 9 July 2013. ► Travel through time and space at Masrah Ramadan. During Ramadan, the MusicHall will be transformed into a Majlis style setting to celebrate the spirit, the festivities and the traditions of the sacred month. Masrah Ramadan is located at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray. Open from Saturday to Sunday from 9.00pm until 2.00am. At a minimum-spend of AED 115/ per person (not inclusive of Shisha) For reservations, please call +971 56 270 86 70

Try something different this Ramadan Ramadan is the perfect time to soak up some culture and learn more about local history. Sheikh Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan. It is about a 2 and a half hour drive from Dubai but is definitely worth the trip out... make a day of it!

Maktoum House was the official residence of Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum, who was the Ruler of Dubai from 1912 to 1958 and who is the grandfather of the present Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The house, which dates from 1896n houses a rare collection of historic photographs, coins, stamps and documents that record Dubai’s history. ► Al Bastakiya Area - Dubai Heritage & Diving Village Al Bastakiya is a historic district in Dubai. Music News... Colour Sounds

Tinnitus, headache, sleeplessness and lack of focus can be the down side of a life in the music industry. Some call it a risk they are prepared to take but regardless it can prove a pain beyond belief for sufferers. Noel Gallagher, Will I am, Norman Cook and countless others have spoken about the dangers of loud music, hearing loss and tinnitus – however as yet there is no known cure to this debilitating condition. However Colour Sound therapies are proving a well-needed aid and relief. You most likely know ‘White Noise’ but there are other colours to try. Yes it can be a bit like being on an airplane MUSIC BITES but colour noise therapies are tried and tested in the world of audio and acoustic and After reportedly being particularly good for DJ’s at risk of tinnitus. thrown off the decks and ‘removed from Try it next time you’re head blocked or have the venue’ 45 minutes been working too much in loud environments into his set at Ocean try this: http://simplynoise.com/. Club US. Eric Morillo tweeted, “The time has come to take a break and refocus my attention on my health & well-being. Thank you to my fans for your enduring love & Support!” Press reports said the Subliminal star ‘already looked out of it when he took to the decks’ then walked off stage leaving an emergency loop playing before club staff switched it off.

Daft Punk unmasked again

Men of mystery, Daft Punk have been un-masked in this pic currently making the rounds on the inter-web. Snapped noshing macaroons and playing champagne pong at their record label Columbia. The photo of the French electro duo was posted by the band ‘The Knocks’, however this is by no means the first picture to ever leak. One half of Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, has joked that the reason for their aversion to the spotlight is because “it would not be enjoyable for humanity to see our features.” – Don’t sell yourself short lads!

Something old, something new, something grovin and something Blue Boomboxin!

Having a wee dander round the interweb we are stoked to see our faves and our fams keeping the musical pulse alive in the UAE. Here are but a few scene cats you can dig deep and support your local talent and stock up for your summer time holiday listening tunage. Audio Tonic – After a roaring season of Audio Tonic nights the men behind the monster beats put together a compilation CD for your summer time fix. CD available in Virgin Megastores across the UAE. Schooly – Riding high and gaining support from the likes of Frankie Knuckles and Louie Vega, seminal Soul Man Schooly has been enjoying the success of his Future Diva’s EP. Hollaphonic – Enjoying the number 2 spot on iTunes and a serious amount of radio air time the Hollaphonic duo have done dun good with their summer time track Found You (Stay Alive). Just Lance – Deep Afro man of wonder has been clearing out his back catalogue and brought us a tidy wee pre club EP as you’re quaffing your hair and picking your threads. Conan Liquid – Booming beautifully Conan’s latest release, Beautiful Blue Boombox with remixes by Smokingroove and vocals from Rarar. Smokingroove – Not since the Jacksons have we declared a favourite of all musical siblings but for these jackin joy bringers we proclaim just that! For live links to all these tunes go to www.infusion.ae Your summer wont be complete with out these in your life.

And the journey continues… in our short time, Infusion Records have covered deep and tribal house, touched on the classic warehouse scene and had some impressive plaudits from big name players. But on the 5th release, Conan Liquid produces maybe his finest moment unleashing the full power of the Roland 303 and 909, creating an acid-fried, near 9 minute epic that, like all the best acid trips, keeps escalating. So much so that when everything collides in a perfect electrical storm just before the 6 minute mark, you’ll imagine you’re on the Hacienda stage pogoing with Bez, while demanding Frankie Knuckles drops ‘that Boombox cheyooone’ again. Not to be outdone, the power house Smokingroove duo step up on remix duties, stripping out the acid and supplying a driving, rolling workout that has Derrick Carter written all over it. And completing the package, Conan delivers his trademark dub version, which is perfect warm up material, but still with a hint of mischievous malice. Altogether now, accccciiieeeed! Andy Buchan

Rudimental – Home

I www.rudimental.co.uk/

2013 has been the year when good music went mainstream (and we mean that in the best way possible). There have been No.1s for Duke Dumont, Daft Punk and Rudimental amongst the usual pop dross, and it’s the latter band that look to be soundtracking the summer as the drum and bass answer to Groove Armada. But there’s more to the London quartet than simply replicating the ‘Superstylin’ duo at their peak. Home is a restless, genrehopping album: there’s the gospel-tinged power pop of ‘Free’ (featuring Emeli Sande), there’s the harmony-laden deep houser ‘Spoons’ and contemplative dubstep on ‘Hide.’ Let’s not forget there are the two huge No.1 singles ‘Home’ and ‘Feel The Love’ which are when Rudimental inject some festival-energy into proceedings. And it’s when 3 musicians and DJ that make up Rudimental are focusing on bigger beats that the album really shines, with tracks like ‘Powerless’ sounding like a blissed out, M25 sunrise rave, but with added jungle. Which, if we’re all honest, should be the soundtrack to every summer. Andy Buchan

Beats Mixrs

now in a range of new flavours In the highly competitive market that is the world of high-end headphones to make an impression one has to stand out from the crowd. One way to do that is go luminous.



We previously reviewed the David Guetta endorsed Beats Mixrs last year and think what you may about the Flowing haired French founder of EDM, when Infusion Magazine caught up with him last month he certainly came across as a charismatic fellow who knew a thing or two about production. With a schedule more hectic than Skirllex on Ephedrine. Producing chart topping anthems is something the French maestro can only afford on the move between his ear busting stadium capacity gigs. As such these Guetta inspired cans account for the aforementioned variables very well in the fact that the produce a loud, crisp sound, that would be audible at a 20,000 capacity venue in full swing and are void of mass external effect to produce a sound that is true enough to both mix and produce. Also incorporating the signature Beats bass factor these cans will keep your ears pleasantly massaged when you crank up the volume making for great listening. There is not much difference between the Beats Mixr launched last year and the Beats Mixr Neons. The Neons are still remarkably lightweight, the cups still swivel 180 degrees and come with a tight but comfy on-the-ear design, they still have a really flexible but sturdy headband that will take some in the DJ bag beatings and the sound is still clear, crisp and delivers the brand’s trademark bass kicks. The only real difference is the range of 5 extremely bright luminous colours they now come in.

DJ Booth: DJ Neil T

Dj Neil T, one of the most in demand DJ’s in Abu Dhabi and the UAE, can confidently state he is elite yet versatile. Following his formative DJ years on the London club and pirate radio scene, Neil T found his home in Abu Dhabi back in 2006. Tearing up residency after residency with his adaptability to bring the right vibe to the right night, DJ Neil T has got it covered.

One thing you might not know about me is… My First DJ Name was Dj Elusive. My worst ever job was... Washing Cars in South London, Blurrgh.. My favourite ever record is... Acen – Trip to the moon Part 2 DJing is much like... Cooking!? Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Just up the road from Abu Dhabi’s clubbing scene! I’m really proud of... The places ive been and friends ive met all through Dj’ing for a living. If I could change one thing about anything it would be... 1210’s in evvvvverrry club! I can’t live without... Family and Call of Duty! My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Main room, main set at a packed out Camden Palace for a Delight Fm vs Freak Fm UK Garage Night, way back when... If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The 40’s! Roll out the barrels! If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Mix Master Mike! I’m not a politician but... Curse alot! You can catch DJ Neil T at Eight, Bar and Bar and Restaurant in the Shangri-la Souk, Abu Dhabi plus regular Wednesday nights in CHI @ The Lodge in Dubai. Weird News... 1 carrot ring of gold

A Swedish woman found her long lost Wedding ring on a carrot growing in her garden. Lena Paahlsson lost her white-gold band, set with seven small diamonds, to the kitchen drain pipe 16 years ago and had given up hope on it ever being found. Miraculously as she was harvesting her veggie patch she pulled up a carrot with the ring embedded in the vegetable. She believes the ring fell into the sink or found its way into their compost before making it into the garden. Reunited with her wedding band she is going to wear it again after a quick spit and polish.

WEIRD BITES Spectacular Spiders A new species of Tarantula has been discovered in Brazil. Species 107: Typhochlaena Costae is not special because of its position at the top of the food chain. Nor for it’s rarity of numbers but - if a spider can be called gorgeous - this giant arachnid has been dubbed ‘gorgeous’ due to it’s striking colours and patterns. We still say eugh!

DOGS ON A TRAIN Stray dogs in Moscow have started commuting from the suburbs to the city using the underground. Pickings have become slim in the countryside so the clever canines have adapted to survive. Canine experts observing this phenomenon have noticed they work together to ensure they got off and on at the right stops by learning how to judge travel time and station announcements. They even choose the quietest carriages to avoid human interference in their travel plans. Then after a hard days scavenging they hop back in the trains to the suburbs where they sleep in packs. This is not the first account of animal transport antics as a well-known cat called MacAvity started catching the 331 bus in Wolverhampton to go to the local fish and chip shop!

She may be small enough to fit in your pocket but she’s been blowing it up big for Infusion Magazine Experience. Proving her worth at Warehouse and Alpha, Miss PM was dubbed “Dubai’s First Lady of Minimal”. But don’t let her residency at Techno night Glitch fool you, this chica brings deep and funky house just like tonic. It’d be hard to say that I have a specific style. I can go from boho to rock to preppy and chic, all depending on my mood. I like unique pieces that are quirky and funky. I also like clothes with unusual tailoring that are edgy with deconstructed and weird shapes. Lately, I’m in to grunge meets princess. I look out for styles and designs of Gareth Pugh, Alexander McQueen, Maison Martin Margiela (not that I can afford them, but they are good for inspiration) I also take inspiration from people like Gwen Stefani and Kate Moss. I like the 70s era. Hippie, feminine, anything goes. During the day I go for flowing long or short dresses. For a night out, I usually wear skirts and funky tops. The shoes I wear for DJing are flat and comfy high tops. Although once at 360, the manager offered to get me a pair of high heels because he couldn’t see me behind the decks! For night outs, I like my platforms or stilettos. But for dancing, I’d definitely wear some funky flats to last me to the wee hours on the dance floor! I like searching for quirky finds from places like London or Tokyo (or anywhere in Asia). But I do like Puma gear or from high street brands I like Topshop, Obey and Bebe for dresses. My favourite piece is a short leather dress that I found in Tokyo. I can wear it with just anything or for any event. I also love my old AC/DC shirt that I can wear with a pair of jeans for a casual feminine look. Ultimately I like clothes that make me feel comfortable and at the same time reflect my personality. https://www.facebook.com/djmisspm?fref=ts

Latest version of Apple’s Siri to feature voice of “slightly confused Indian delivery man”

Apple fans across the region were celebrating yesterday, after the tech giant revealed that the next update to its voice-activated Siri software had been developed especially with the Middle East in mind. Apple’s senior vice president Eddy Cue said: “We wanted Siri to fit into the lives of our Gulf customers. So we thought: what’s the sound that makes them feel most at home? As it turned out, the answer was right in front of us: a slightly confused Indian delivery man.” “We knew that it had to be incredible. Our engineers spent months making it slower and more wheedling. They made it pause and ask users to repeat themselves – more often. And they tested 400 different versions of the phrase ‘Sir… this problem’ before settling on the definitive one.” “The results, I think you’ll agree, are mind-blowing.” Onlookers were then treated to a demonstration of the new Siri. Following Cue’s request to Siri to find a dry cleaner’s in Abu Dhabi, Siri was heard to respond “Sir… this drycleaner… I don’t know.” A close second is the Filipino version of Siri featuring the phrase “Yes MamSir” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.
