How do DJs get a foot on the ladder? Hard work, perseverance and offering something different are all key, but you can also feed your competitive instinct and enter one of the city’s DJ competitions. And the premier contest is back, as the Pioneer DJ Championships take place during September: we talk to all the judges involved to find out what they’re looking for, while I also share my DJ competition experience (clue: it didn’t end well). The other 80 or so pages are full of club photos, the latest news, event listings, album and film reviews, and of course our bi-weekly dose of biting satire and bile courtesy of the PanArabia Enquirer and the Angry Monkey. Oh, and we’ve also done a little bit of design tinkering, making sure we’re the best looking free magazine out there. Enjoy the issue! Andy

Looking Back

What we did

House of Afrika, Level 9 Media One Hotel

Summer: a time for accidental saunas, DVD box set hibernation and counting the days down until less summer. But thanks to the good people at the Media One Hotel, they’ve opened up their previously empty 9th floor, creating an open-plan, warehouse style space that’s been the talk of the town the last few weeks. While Thursdays have been an eclectic bag of indie, house and 90s, Fridays have been soundtracked by the growing House of Afrika brand, showcasing the best of Afro, tech and house. And last Fridays HoA was one of the best yet, as Nthayi and Charl got the crowd going with a fine selection of bass-friendly offerings, while the high end Void soundsystem filled the large space with warm sonic goods. And the crowd were quick to appreciate it, with hands in the air action from the start, and an electric vibe. As the Chemical Brothers once correctly said, it began in Afrika, and by the looks of this Dubai party, is it’s still going very, very strong…

Looking Back Chuck Love @ Donatello LOUNGE

DJing is pretty hard, right? How about Djing, playing the trumpet, keyboard and singing over the top, all without so much as missing a beat? The amazing thing is that US artist Chuck Love makes it all look – and sound – so easy as he conjures up a dizzying mix of live music and DJing. The Om Records signing was in Dubai to launch Dubai’s latest new bar, Donatello Lounge, built on the foundations of the old Lotus One bar and restaurant. And with friendly staff, a warm vibe and an excellent resident DJ in the shape of Stu Laurie, this bar could become a firm favourite, especially if they keep up the caliber of bookings like Chuck Love.

The Act, Shangri La HOTEL

What do you get when you combine beautiful people, gravity defying, spine-contorting acts and Peruvian food? It’s not a bad intro to a bad joke, but the three best things about The Act, the new-ish supper club meets Burlesque bar that’s getting a lot of interest. We like to think we’re pretty hardened clubbers, but even we let a little Alice in Wonderland gasp out as we walked through the doors, wondering just where the f*** are we? The baroque design of the club is stunning, and just as bonkers as the acts that are showcased every 30 minutes up on stage, or sometimes in the middle of the crowd. The food, a traditional mix of Peruvian classics like ceviche is well done, although on the expensive side of affordable, while the crowd is entirely populated with beautiful people who have seemingly bought out the entire Middle Eastern supply of Vivienne Westwood. Our only grumble was the music, is nowhere free of the commercial blight in Dubai? But when the other attractions are this enticing, it’s a relatively small point.

One liners

Old jokes home Some helium walks into a bar, the barman says, “We don’t serve inert gasses in here.” The helium doesn’t react.

No money, mo problems

Know Baauer yeah, the man behind the infectious hip hop/trap ‘Harlem Shake’ that came with its own internet meme video? Well, according to a recent interview, he hasn’t “seen any money from it.” Looks like being a big hit these days isn’t all it cracked up to be…

The Edinburgh Festival is always a hotbed of comedic talent, and according to a public vote, these were the funniest three gags this year… Rob Auton: I heard a rumour that Cadbury is bringing out an oriental chocolate bar. Could be a Chinese Wispa. Alex Horne: I used to work in a shoerecycling shop. It was sole-destroying. Alfie Moore: I’m in a same-sex marriage… the sex is always the same.

Looking Forward

Local News Final F1 headliner announced

It was one of the most anticipated event announcements in Dubai, as a live radio show at Virgin released the news that Jay Z is to be the final addition to the Abu Dhabi F1 line up. Hundreds of fans queued from early in the morning to hear the announcement, with the first 200 people getting free tickets to the November 1 event. Mr Beyonce Knowles will play Friday night, while Muse play on Saturday and electronic giants Depeche Mode close proceedings on Sunday November 3. Head to www.yasmarinacircuit.com for tickets and more information.

Dub be good for you

It’s happy days all round at Casa Latina, as not only are they celebrating a new season with a new sound system, monthly reggae night Drop Dread have announced that 62 year old UK legend Horace Andy will be headlining their September 6 bash. Born in Jamaica, but now based in the UK, he’s a veteran singer, songwriter and worked alongside Massive Attack at the turn of the century, and continues to release dub and reggae music to this day.

Looking Forward Champions of Dubai

Dubai’s enthusiasm for nearly made it rock bands remains undimmed as Manchester’s almost made it men, Reverend and the Makers, have been confirmed to play at the Music Room on October 4. While they never quite followed up on the Top 10 hit ‘Heavyweight Champion of the World,’ the indie-pop band have still put out three albums, while lead singer Jon McClure is one of the more arresting and interesting front men in the industry.

Caffeine junky It’s fair to say that House of Afrika is firmly on Dubai’s clubbing map now, and we’re taking things a step further as we re-launch our M-Dek pool sessions at the Media One Hotel with a special guest set from South Africa’s Black Coffee. One of the most indemand house DJs around, he’s also a regular for our parties and with good reasons – few DJs make sure the dancefloor gets down as well as him, and you can be a part of it on Friday September 13.

Looking Forward Rumours

The Smile dance music festival has hinted that some or all of the following will be playing for them this year: Sander Van Doorn, Solomun, Steve Angello, Richie Hawtin, Afrojack and Fatboy Slim. The Lightning Seeds and Toploader have been confirmed for a double header at the Irish Village on September 26. We’ve heard that Disclosure are one of the big live names playing at this year’s Creamfields. RnB star John Legend is on one promoter’s hit list, with a visit in the early half of 2014 likely. Derrick May, Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez and Just Blaze are rumoured to be playing in Dubai on one weekend at the end of September.

Big ups to the Media One Hotel, who have turned their huge hotel into one of the best party destinations, thanks to the back-to-basics clubbing on Level 9. US house heavyweight Moodymann has been confirmed for our 8th Birthday party on Nov 8. Aw yeah! Nights so good you can't remember any of them...

Ringtones. What is this, 1992? In this vibrating day and age, is there really any need for the world to be subjected to the Crazy Frog? Clubs or promoters who push bad quality sound. With so many options out there, there’s no need to abuse ear drums! Being asked to stop playing this "techno" music and play some Shakira. Our foot. Your Face. End of story.

ALOHA! While there might be a whole host of new high end franchise clubs in Dubai, Mahiki remains one of the biggest and best in the business. And with a cool yet commercial soundtrack, some of the best – and most potent! – cocktails out there, it’s no surprise that queues still snake around Jumeirah Beach Hotel every weekend.

History

Founded nearly a decade ago by Nick House and Piers Adam, Mahiki puts its emphasis on fresh fruit cocktails, a tropical atmosphere, high end service and an even higher end clientele – the UK branch frequently hosts big names like Kings of Leon, Rihanna, Jay Z, Kate Moss and more, while the Dubai version has an equally illustrious celebrity history, having hosted Liam Gallagher, footballers Andy Cole and Teddy Sheringham and heavyweight boxer David Hayes.

Atmosphere

With a vibrant Polynesian theme running throughout the club, Mahiki offers a holiday at home atmosphere with its laid back yet sophisticated set up, exotic drinks and tropical grill food menu. And thanks to their online service, you can make a table booking and reservation though mahiki.ae.

Events:

Mahiki is open 6 days a week, and is closed on Sundays. Tuesdays are one of the most popular nights, as the award-winning Pin Up Tuesdays night draws in big crowds, with complimentary cocktails served from 9-11pm. And, coming in September, they’ll be upping the ante with the Pink Ladies Pin Up events held every first Tuesday of the month in assoctiaon with Moet & Chandon. The club is also starting up its own full Moon parties this month, while they’re promising a Gents orientated evening in October, hold tight fellas! Their line up is completed with the TikiTastic Thursdays and Fabulous Fridays.

let's

trance 12 years on from their biggest hit ‘Firewire,’ German trance duo Cosmic Gate are still pushing their beefy prog-meets-trance sound. But after finding themselves outcasts in their native Germany, we sat down with them ahead of their Chi date to find out where they fit into clubland now…

Welcome to Dubai – you’ve played here before, what memories do you have of it? Thank you very much, unfortunately our last show in Dubai was a while ago already, but we always have good fun in your beautiful city! Dubai is one of the most booming cities in the world, and we are excited to see the changes to recent years, and of course to play a great show and party with you guys. Trance Djs have largely adapted their sound in recent times, are they following the herd, or do you think it says something about trance? This is true, but house DJs are adapting a lot of trance sounds in their productions and sets too, the music simply is getting closer together with mixing different styles and genres into one. Let’s see how far this goes, let’s see what the future holds for new styles in EDM...
Where do Cosmic Gate fit into this brave new EDM world? Good question, we do not really care about what box people put us in to be honest. We are branded as pure trance, even though we play the least real trance in our sets. We just

do our thing, play what we like, however the media or fans pigeonhole it in the end. We want just to play and produce hopefully good music. Trance fans – as well as Drum and Bass fans – seem to be some of the most passionate out there. Why do you think that is? Both genres are for real music lovers, maybe that is why they are the most passionate about their music and follow DJs sometimes all around the world for gigs or concerts. The music you make has a strong emotional content – do you instantly feel it in your studio when you get a chord or melody right?

Yes, it is very important for us that a chord/melody/bassline touches us when working in the studio and writing new music, otherwise we would not continue working on it! Our music simply lives from its emotional aspect, we want people to be touched by it, hopefully as it touches us when writing it. If people haven’t heard one of your sets before, what should they expect? Music is always hard to put into words, and maybe even harder when it is your own. Maybe let’s say expect a mix of progressive and trance, but always with balls, no fluffy breaks for 3 minutes. Just come by and experience yourself, we will do our best to wake your mind to our sound.
Germany is the deep house capital of the world, how do they view what you do? We have not had a single gig in Germany during the last 5 years, we are kind of non existent in our own country.

Our sound simply is not what most people want to hear, so we are definitely not the focus of the German scene. That said, as much as we do not really know what goes in Germany club wise, we are big deep house fans and listen to it a lot in our free time...
You’ve been going for over a decade now, what’s been the best change in the music industry in that time? Maybe it’s the option to communicate directly with your fans now using social media, and by pressing one button we can let our fans all around the world know what is new and upcoming. This is maybe the biggest change to how marketing was done before Facebook/twitter etc. Cosmic Gate play Domeland Chi on September 19, 9pm-3am.

Music News... DJ Mag’s top 100 Poll Plunges Into Parody

EDM superstar DJs Afrojack, Boys Noize and Paul Oakenfold have contributed to a viral video satirizing the shenanigans behind DJ magazine’s annual top 100 poll, with Paul Oakenfold advising ‘vote for us, so we don’t have to get kids in India to do it for you’. The video (which also includes 90s pop star Alanis Morissette admitting she’s not a DJ yet ‘but how hard can that s*** be?’) emerged just as Slovenian tech-house giant Umek issued a similarly sardonic statement about the poll in which he admitted that while most of his fans (and lower level DJs) hate the poll for superstars, it’s surprisingly popular. “Everyone acts as a rebel, stating that they MUSIC BITES don’t care about their rankings, but in the end all of us eagerly anticipate the event on ADE, “Europe is a little bit where they announce the results,” he admitted. behind in dance music. “The rank doesn’t really influence my We’ve seen it all, and number of gigs, nor the price I can charge for it’s all been done. When you grow in this my performance, but it still feels nice to see dance culture for 15 my name among the great 100. It’s an ego trip and everyone likes that, whether you are years… It just feels like people are less honest about it or not,” said Umek. excited.” Top ranking EDM star Gareth Emery, however, didn’t keep his mouth shut, taking Tiesto insists Las Vegas to Facebook this week to urge his fans really is ‘the new Ibiza’. You might be one of the NOT to vote for him. richest DJs in the world, “Just took a bizarre unsolicited phone but it’s a bit rude to call from a publicity company who help DJs forget your roots… promote themselves for the Top 100 poll, who told me I should be aware one of my ‘competitors’ (as she put it) was spending $15,000 on Twitter advertising alone, and unless I got on that sort of level, I would find it ‘hard to compete’. Obviously not going to say who the DJ was, but I was nearly sick in my mouth,” said Gareth. “So here’s an alternative Top 100 message: Don’t vote for me.”

Look and Listen Circo Loco Shooting in Birmingham One man was shot and left fighting for his life at Circo Loco’s Arena party recently, after gunmen stormed the high profile techhouse event at the Rainbow Warehouse. Detective Inspector Justin Spanner said in a statement following the shooting that “This is a very serious crime which must have been very frightening for clubbers to witness. The motive for the attack remains unclear but initial enquiries indicate this was a targeted attack and that the gunman escaped on foot,” he added. “All deep house events have a vile vibe now,” said Becci Ferguson via the event’s Facebook page. Carlos Bfg Campbell agreed. “It wasn’t Birmingham people that were involved it was out of towners,” he claimed.

MUSIC BITES “I was shocked. But hey, this is a new world.” Snoop Dogg’s brand manager Nick Adler chats about the 15 fans who’ve each paid $99 to download a gold and rainbow spliff sticker via the gangsta rap star’s app Snoopify.

Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams are suing Marvin Gaye’s family in order Blurred lines to protect their mega hit ‘Blurred Lines.’ Gaye’s family initially criticized the song when it first came out, alleging that they’d stolen from Gaye’s ‘Got To Give It Up’ and Funkadelic’s ‘Sexy Ways.’ The ‘Blurred Lines’ duo have rejected these claims, and got in a pre-emptive lawsuit arguing that they’ve been wrongly accused and that ‘Blurred Lines’ is only ‘reminiscent’ of the other tracks, which is not enough to convict. What’s not in doubt is that the song’s video is still dividing people over its sexist content, while the song has just sold over 1 million copies in the UK alone, making any potential law suit a hugely costly affair.

Crowd control Back for a third year running, the Pioneer DJ Championships is looking to crown a local DJ the best in the city. Before that, we sat down with all the judges to find out what they’re looking for‌ Panel: Smokingroove, Conan Manchester, MaDJam, Rone Jaxx, Emtee Pockets, Jamal Sirhi, DJ Bliss, DJ Brooklyn, Raxon, Patrik Carrera and Anirban (Pioneer)

What’s the most important quality for a winning DJ? SG: Natural music and technical skills are the cornerstone of any DJ, a winning DJ should excel, deliver and enhance with ease! Conan: Consistency. It’s no good pulling off an amazing scratch, mix or loop and then clashing a few mixes afterwards. MaDJam: Have the right state-of-mind and be able to maintain it. Even if a DJ is technically really good but has a huge ego that ain’t gonna work for a real champion - we like people that keep it real. Emtee: Arguably the most important quality is originality. I love seeing a DJ take a different approach to his or her set. I feel it’s much more rewarding to approach the competition with a different and unexpected set rather than something we have seen or heard before by other

previous Pioneer DJ Winners. Anirban: Phenomenal DJ/ mixing Skills, ability to musically satisfy the dancefloor/crowd, a positive attitude and outlook, good music selection and understanding of various music genres/. Did you ever enter any DJ competitions when you were younger, did you do well, any funny stories? SG: I entered the open decks competition at Heaven nightclub in London, and am pleased to say I won! That was a huge confidence boost as I was the youngest person in the competition. DJ Bliss: Yes I have, I took part in a few competitions when I was in school and college and did alright. I didn’t win any of them but I did win the PALME DJ of the Year award in 2004. Conan: I went in for the DMC championships in 1988 and

I didn’t even get a look in – always learnt a lot though. Not a funny story, but I did lend Cashmoney a copy of ‘I’m Bad’ by LL Cool J in 1988 because one of his copies was messed up. Patrik: Yes I did, I was playing vinyl back then, and prepared a crazy set switching between tracks and sampling. Brooklyn: I’ve entered 2 competitions, nothing as big as Pioneer though. I won one and came 3rd with the second one. Funny story is that I picked up one of the DJ’s routines that he messed up and corrected it using similar tracks and it worked as a reply or payback to his set. Emtee: Weirdly I have judged competitions in both the UK and UAE but have never entered any. There is no real reason for this, but through attending and judging over the years I certainly know what it takes to win. Do hip hop and urban DJs have it easier than house and trance DJs? SG: Not at all, if anything real hip hop DJs are expected to deliver serious elements of turntablism in every set, they are in my books anyway. Bliss: No DJs have it easy, but I think the fact that urban DJs change songs faster than the house and trance DJs make them a bit different. Rone: More is expected from an

urban DJ, they get more requests and the crowd is harsher. Where as in house music, as long as you’re playing the right dance genre for the night, most crowds don’t complain. MaDJam: Mixing is mixing, doesn’t matter what style DJs play. But what does make a difference is how a DJ integrates between tracks, some clean, some quick cuts, some tracks can even ride on each other for 3 minutes or more. The creativity level is unlimited. Raxon: Not really, I think there is more pressure on hip hop and urban as they need to really push those boundaries as many of us have seen most of the tricks, and electronic DJs need to think out side of the box and focus also on harmonic track selection. What technical tricks are you going to keep an eye on? Conan: I want to see an all round understanding of the equipment. Some flair, some showmanship, good tune selection and most importantly no red lining the music. MaDJam: Keeping the beats locked, and levels balanced. In the past we’ve had DJs that could mix well, but they had very bad control on gains/level changes between tracks. In the real world that can potentially destroy a dancefloor (in a bad way). Anirban: I would look out for flawless mixing – key mixing, smooth EQ’ng, selection of tracks, creative use of the features/effects on CDJ + mixer, usage of samples/accapelas and most importantly originality.

How would you mark an ultra commercial set versus an underground one? SG: I personally look favourably on DJs who really try to do something different, play something different, this is how it is in the industry the world over, so they should be able to demonstrate that at this level. Conan: I don’t think there is really a difference with regards to the competition. We will be looking for skills and mixing capability. But if the DJ mixes One Direction into King of the Beats by Mantronix I will immediately mark them 10/10 for originality. Jamal: I would rather hear commercial music during the competition because the attendees, crowd and judges can relate and react to it better than playing unknown underground music. This doesn’t mean they cannot use underground music, but they have to be very careful in what music they choose to play.

The semi-finals will take place at Sublime Lounge WTC on the 4th, 11th & 18th of September and the Grand Final at Armani/Prive Burj Khalifa on Thursday the 26th of September. www.dj-me.ae CONAN LIQUID

Inside a

DJ Competition

Infusion’s Andy Buchan had his first experience of DJ competitions nearly a decade ago, and has just gotten over the mental scarring… The prize was a brand new set of shinybuttoned CD decks – back when CD decks were still a rarity – but it was the opportunity to test myself out of my bedroom/after parties that was the most enticing. So after recording a demo mix on tape – tape! – I headed down to the first round in Leeds with a 5 track mini mix planned out to perfection. And, to me and my friends’ surprise, it worked as I went through to the next round with my hasty but neatly mixed set of funky house. But with the self-imposed pressure building for the semi finals, I decided a needed an edge, and that my clever loop on the first mix wasn’t enough. So I decided to write down the tempos and mix points on my wrist, meaning I should breeze through. They didn’t rub off as you might have expected, but I hadn’t realized that CD decks had a +6 and +10 speed setting. So when the first mix slid wildly out of time, I had no idea that these decks were set to +6 and not +10 as mine at home. And, with panic rising, and the judges looking on nervously, I decided to do what any rookie DJ in trouble does: played with the flangers and affects until my fingers went numb. Tail very much between my legs, I never entered another DJ competition, but my experience did harden me up almost instantly, and also gave me a taste of what it’s like to have other people react to the music you love. Which is why, 10 years later, I’m still writing about DJing, and DJing whenever I can.

Album Reviews... White Lies – Big TV Rock/Indie I Whitelies.com

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it seems to be the White Lies musical adage, as their third album follows closely in the previous footsteps, with big, sweeping melodies, heartfelt lyrics and bombastic strings to the fore. But where their third album differs is that they’ve given this a context, imagining it as the soundtrack to a young couple who’ve left their quiet country life behind and headed for the big city. While that undoubtedly gives the album more gravitas and depth, Big TV will live and die by the strength of the tracks. And with their darkly anthemic tone still intact, every track sounds like it could be a single, as post-punk beats collide with driving guitar lines and electronic swooshes, all topped off with Harry McVeigh’s booming baritone. But in that uniformity comes their (slight) downfall as there’s little deviation, barely any change up in energy or tempo. Add that to the fact this is a virtual carbon copy of their previous two albums, and you have their most solid album yet, but an equally redundant one if you own their previous albums ‘To Lose My Life’ and ‘Ritual.’ – Andy Buchan

We Are Planet Perfecto – Volume 3: From Vegas to Ibiza EDM I pauloakenfold.com



It’s that age old DJ problem – do you update your sound to match current trends, or do you carry on pushing your own musical boundaries? Some DJs like Tiesto move with the sounds (albeit after rinsing trance for all it was worth back in his early career), while others like Carl Cox have just carried on doing their infectious house sound for decades, with little deviance. Paul Oakenfold though has always been a musical ghost, flitting between genres: first as a pumping trance DJ, then as one of the house godfathers, with everything from film soundtracks to attempted rock bands in between. Now though, he’s found himself a niche in Las Vegas – if playing banging electro to a cavernous club full of Molly’d up ravers can be called a niche. And it’s that EDM-accented sound that he’s pushing on his latest label release. And it’s awful, like waking up next to a dead horse awful. Full of electrical noise and ear-shredding bleeps that should only be heard in a slaughter house, it’s the musical equivalent of Peter Stringfellow or Hugh Hefner, tired old men chasing past highs. And while he might be making millions over in the States, we’d hope that more experienced electronic music fans would be able to see through his Emperor’s new clothes routine and by-pass this entire bandwagon jumping offering. Neither fresh, nor inspired, this compilation should be simply soundtracked by Oakenfold’s accountants gleefully rubbing their hands. – Andy Buchan

I first heard Quasimoto the morning after another late night in Newcastle (UK). Despite the inevitable haze, I found the pitched up alter ego of Los Angeles’s legendary producer/rapper Madlib to be somewhat soothing, kind of like a hip hop paracetamol. Many moons later, Lord Quas returns with more of his quirky sound compiled over a decade, and it’s as unique as ever. He might not be on everyone’s iPod, but Madlib’s calibre is up their with hip hop’s finest, one of the naughties’ most critically acclaimed artists, forming half of the JayLib partnership with the late J Dilla (commonly regarded as the greatest producer of all time). The stand out track ‘Planned Attack’ brings some great bounce to proceedings, followed by the excellent ‘Season Change’ and the smart lyrics of ‘Youngblood. If you’re looking for great alternative beats, this is 99% more original than anything else in the charts at the moment, check it out!

DJ Booth: Rod Lee Winters

One of audio tonic’s newest residents, and also the driving musical force behind their bi-weekly Saturday Sessions at 360, Rod Lee Winters is not only a deep house guru but also a gravy addict.

One thing you might not know about me is… I love gravy. I mean I really really love gravy. My worst ever job was… Working at a stamp shop. No gravy. My favorite ever record is... My original vinyl pressing of Electric Ladyland by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. DJing is much like... Most performances, incredible when well received, soul destroying when not. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Excitingly diverse at best, cliched and pigeon-holed at worst. I’m really proud of...The Socceroos making the World Cup again! What track could you drop in every set? I’m not the type of DJ who can drop any tunes any time, ain’t got the skills! One tune that has remained in my bag, digital or other is ‘Big Love’ by Pete Heller. I can’t live without... Mmm gravy. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Recently becoming part of the Audio Tonic family is a big goal ticked off the list! What is your guiltiest pleasure? I have a rare condition that inhibits my ability to feel guilt after pleasurable activities. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I’m happy with right here and now. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Prosumer. I would literally be looking over his shoulder taking note of all the tracks he played. I’m not a politician but… I’m not a politician. soundcloud.com/rodleewinters/rod-lee-winters-for-you www.facebook.com/clubbeats

Soundstage

Adam Long One of the most in-demand saxophonists in the region, Adam’s also the new resident at the Bliss Lounge at the Sheraton JBR

How would you describe your sound? I’ve always liked playing loud, and my mouthpieces and saxophones are known in the industry for having ‘bright’ sounds, which I love. That’s not to say that I don’t love to wallow an old 40’s or 50’s standard (jazz) ballad! Being a musician in Dubai is much like... Being a musician in any other country really. Working hard to be successful at what you do, enabling the musician to make a living out of something they are good at and getting fulfillment from performing for people and making music. My first musical influence was... At a young age, probably around age 5 or 6 I guess. Nigel Kennedy was on TV a lot and my parents were buying his albums and I thought he was kind of cool… the violin lessons started shortly afterwards! Dream festival line up? I’m a funk kind of guy at heart, the likes of Earth Wind and Fire, James Brown, Ray Charles, Brand New Heavies, James Taylor Quartet, Average White Band, The Fatback band, The Greyboy Allstars, Stevie Wonder, Maceo Parker, Jamiroquai and more. What’s the one song you couldn’t cover? When asked to play along to tracks by Guns N Roses and Michael Jackson, I try to decline. What’s the best gig you’ve played? There’s been so many great gigs for so many different reasons but the most recent was playing at the Bahrain F1 Grand Prix Fashion TV afterrace party 2012 with the DJ Poet Named Life. Playing to a 1500-strong crowd rammed into the venue as I stood out on the catwalk in front of them playing – just awesome! And the worst? Watching my soprano sax being knocked off a 1.5 metre high stage about 1 hour before I was due to play solo in a concert to about 300 people… it’s still bent today! Band motto? ‘Be prepared’ – same as the Scouts (haha), but especially here in the Middle East you never know what’s going to happen at your next gig! adamlongonline.net/ sole-agency.com

Looking Closer

Weird News... Teething pains

We all know the sound of someone else’s crying baby is amongst the worst sounds in the world, and it seems it put off one would-be armed robber as he stopped mid-raid to take care of a crying baby. Kojek Mista and 4 friends broke into a house in Jakarta, stole Dhs18,000 and tied up all the occupants, and in doing so woke up the baby. Realising that the mother and nanny were tied up, he jumped to the rescue. “I asked his mother how to make him stop crying. She said he had to be fed with milk,” he explained. ‘The mother said it should be made with two spoons of WEIRD BITES milk and warm water. I gave it to the baby while cradling him. Not long after that, the Not homeless, baby fell asleep, so I put him in bed.’ need boobs. So read the begging sign of American Christina Andrews as she tried to get money to raiser her, erm, profile. “I figured this was a good way to do it. People put out signs that they’re homeless. I’m not... I’m just being honest.”

The animal kingdom is an amazing thing, but one cashstrapped Chinese zoo tried to take a Paws for thought evolution step too far recently as they attempted to pass a dog off as a lion as they couldn’t afford the real thing. “I had my young son with me so I tried to play along and told him it was a special kind of lion. But then the dog barked and he knew straight away what it was and that I’d lied to him,” said mum Liu Wen. Elsewhere in the zoo, visitors found a mongrel dog in the Timber wolf’s cage and another pooch posing as a leopard in the big cat enclosure.

Grand Theft Auto V slammed by Dubai residents

DUBAI: Residents have criticised an upcoming video game that they claim does not paint Dubai in a fair light and could well damage its international reputation. In Grand Theft Auto V: City of Life Edition, due for release later this month, gamers are encouraged to drive at reckless speeds on the stunningly rendered streets of Dubai. “It’s absolutely disgusting,” Mindy Breadbasket, an outraged mother of three, told reporters. “In the game, there is a very limited selection of four-wheel drive cars to choose from, whereas in the real Dubai we have pretty much everything, right up to the latest Range Rover Evoke or Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.” The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

MOVIE JOBS Ashton ‘Punk’d’ Kutcher in real role shocker! Despite his pranking tendencies, and divisive nature, Kutcher isn’t the weak link in this biopic of Apple’s Steve Jobs. The script isn’t as lively as The Social Network, but it’s still a fascinating insight into one of our generation’s most important people. Classification: PG-13 Director: Joshua Michael Stern Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Josh Gad

Planes

Pixar’s Cars franchise might have been the 3 wheeled Robin Reliant of the animation garage, but it made a lot of money which is presumably why they’ve strapped a propeller to the front and turned it into planes. Not Pixar’s finest moment, one for kids and families only. Classification: U Director: Klay Hall Starring: Val Kilmer, Teri Hatcher, John Cleese

PREVIEWS You’re Next

A family reunion at a remote country pile turns into carnage as a group of masked raiders try to kill the grown up family. Fortunately, the daughter is blessed with Navy Seal-esque survival skills and strikes back. Impressive, whipsmart action horror. Classification: PG-18 Director: Adam Wingard Starring: Shami Vinson, Nicholas Tucci

2 Guns Wahlberg – surely the busiest man in Hollywood – and Washington team up as two undercover cops who start investigating each other, before joining forces after a bank robbery. A good cop movie, but one that asks you to make a lot of plot leaps of faith. Classification: 18 Director: Baltasar Kormakur Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg

Selling out It’s a tough world out there – just ask David Guetta’s PR, who has to stop the Gallic ponce Googling himself on a daily basis otherwise he’d surely do the honourable thing and suck on a hose pipe connected to the back of his car. But that doesn’t excuse Crosstown Rebels, the ultra underground but successful record label run by acid-fried but very pleasant weirdo Damien Lazarus, for selling his soul and credibility. Not only did he license the use of one of his label’s biggest tracks by deep house duo Infinity Ink to the hip pop world, but he licensed it to Pitbull and Flo-Rida, two of the most excruciatingly, s***-awful jokers the world has ever seen. Even worse, the video for the song looks like a pervy 9 year old’s first attempt at iVideo, while the song’s lyrics – if that’s not too grandiose a word – eloquently elucidate the positive benefits of a woman having lots of junk in the trunk. The song’s about ass and was made by two assh*les, so it therefore figures that this stinks more than a Sharjah rubbish dump in mid-August. The idiots just keep on winning it seems.
