A Note From The Editor

Editor-in-chief: Talal Budebs Managing Partner: Charl Chaka charlchaka@infusion.ae Editor: Andy Buchan andy@infusion.ae

If, like me, you missed out on your Ibiza hit this year, then we’ve got the next best thing for you as Infusion’s Charl spent nearly a month embedded in the heart of clubland to bring you a collection of very vague memories and barely printable iPhone photos. Fortunately, we’ve managed to piece together his fragmented memory and along with our man on the ground – Mambo Café’s Matt Charles – we have the full run down on the season so far, and the best closing parties. Elsewhere, we look ahead at Globalfunk’s return to action by walking down memory lane with main promoter Mach 4, while we also found time to talk to their September 19 headliner Roni Size. We also have the lowdown on our cover star Rick Ross, the big man in hip hop at the moment. And finally, we have the lowdown on a very cool new Soundcloud venture, whereby one of our contributors is lovingly re-upping some of the world’s classic mix CDs, which inspired us to look back at some of our favourites. Enjoy the issue! Andy

What we did Drop Dread feat. Horace Andy, Casa Latina There should have been something ironic with Horace Andy singing money being the root of all evil while in Dubai, but then that would be a cheap and obvious shot. Instead this was the point when the packed out crowd put their cameras away, began to live for the now and appreciate a unique master of his craft. Perhaps it was the first (of many) Massive Attack moments that the audience identified with, or at four songs in, perhaps it was the realisation that we were witnessing a performance that was both humbling and illuminating in raw emotion. Being a small gig, there was no band and Horace was singing over versions, a practise that’s existed as long as the sound system itself. However, it’s unlikely Coxone et all would’ve ever made their musical imprint had they been using over poor quality mp3s, while several riddims Andy requested weren’t available from the DJs. But these points aside, the audience loved it (as did the non smokers, as puffers were given their own room for the night) as Horace Andy, the consummate professional, sang behind the decks in Casa Latina like it was any emotive Kingston dance. The feeling of hearing ‘Love Of A Woman’ sung live is a memory that will live on for a long, long time. – Brian Welsh

Looking Back

The Illusionists, World Trade Centre Billed as “The Greatest Magic Show in the World,” the Illusionists didn’t fail to deliver. In a world where magic and illusion have been vastly dispelled by the countless online videos and “Masked Magicians,” the Illusionists’ reinvented classic tricks and newer Illusions to keep the audience guessing from the start. The 7 strong team was like a combination of David Blaine, Derren Brown, Houdini, Dynamo, Criss Angel, Penn and Teller all in 1 spellbinding show. Each Illusion was executed with precision and thanks to the flamboyantly comical host “The Trickster,” who kept the audience enthralled, mixing comedic timing with his own unique style of street magic, the show flowed seamlessly. With too many jaw-dropping moments to mention, our personal favourites were “The Anti Conjurer” who pulled more live birds out of thin air than he had sleeves and “The Inventor” whose version of the age old “sawing a person in half” trick was the most unique and baffling rendition of the classic we’ve ever witnessed. – Vip Patel

2Liv goes live

We’ve had plenty of supper clubs and up-market bars opening in the last year, but few out and out clubs – which is why we’re excited to hear about 2Liv, the new two level club at the Sofitel Palm Jumeirah. With a Funktion 1 soundsystem, a floating DJ booth, and a mezzanine terrace overlooking the dancefloor, not to mention a complex LED lighting system, it’s got all the high end specifications to make it a serious contender on the club scene. Plus, there’s a roof terrace set to be unveiled in October. The full line up is yet to be revealed, but residents Ejaz and Alex Seda (pictured) will be on hand to deliver the audio goods on Thursday September 19, facebook. com/2livDubai.

Looking Forward 3 feet high and still rising

It seems only just last issue that we were bigging up the Boombox team (oh, it was), but they’re mining the classic hip hop sound once again as they’re bringing over the DJing third of De La Soul, DJ Maseo, to play their monthly hip hop party. The band are no stranger to Dubai, having played here several times recently, and each time they’ve delivered the hip hop goods. Support for the September 20 Music Room gig coms from Lobito and Somalie, while local collective The Recipe also drop a live set on warm up, with tickets Dhs100.

Blue Marlin returns It was the success story of last year, as Blue Marlin became the go-to Friday event drawing in thousands of clubbers, and balancing a cutting edge line up with guaranteed floor fillers. And the Ghantoot venue returns after its summer slumber on Friday September 27, and has Spanish DJ and Space Ibiza favourite Wally Lopez headlining, with support from residents Jean B and Frederick Stone.

Looking Forward Rumours

James Zabiela is lined up to play at Nasimi on October 4. Carl Cox and John Digweed could be on the same bill at the end of December if one promoter gets their way. Pharrell Williams has been confirmed to appear at one of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix parties. We hear on the grapevine, that EDM superstar Avicii has been confirmed for a 2014 date. Remember Republique? Well the space at the Address Hotel downtown is going to be turned into a new club called La Boutiq. Fun Lovin’ Criminals are penciled in to drop a DJ set this November according to one source. Another source tells us that Ushuaia, the day-time Ibiza beach club is opening a Dubai franchise on the Palm later this year.

Big ups to the New Era team, who are celebrating the 59th birthday of the 59 range. Sweatpants. We may never wear proper trousers ever again. We’re impressed at the sneak peak pics we’ve seen of Pacha, the new superclub at the Madinat set to be unveiled before the end of the year.

We were gutted to hear that the first ever Creamfields Beirut was cancelled just a day before it was scheduled to take place, here’s hoping peace reigns in the region soon! Social media stalkers who like every comment/photo/mix you do. Thanks for the love, but it’s getting a ‘lil creepy now… We’re sad to hear Rock Radio, the guitar-loving station in Fujairah, is no more, another nail in the commercial music coffin… Fire alarms that go off across the whole building at 5am in the morning because Abood from upstairs doesn’t know how to make toast properly. Twat!

In the of time 10 things you never knew about the big man in hip hop, Rick Ross, ahead of his big Festival City gig on Friday October 4‌

Let’s start with the basics – his real name is William Leonard Roberts II and he took the name Rick Ross from a mid-80s drug trafficker in LA. As you do. His first album, Port of Miami released in 2006, went straight to the top of the Billboard 200 and sold 187,000 copies in his first week. Impressive skills, with Rolling Stone correctly predicting that it would be the summer’s ‘biggest rap record.’

element of 6 Another controversy in Rick Ross’s

Before that, Rick Ross was involved in a heavyweight record label bidding war, as P Diddy, Irv Gotti and Jay Z all battled to sign the heavyweight rapper, with Jay Z winning out, signing him to a Def Jam subsidiary. The second single from his debut album, ‘Scarface (Push Ot To the Limit), adapted the theme song from the classic gangster film, while the video was modeled after the film.

It wouldn’t be a hip hop story, without at least one beef, and Rick Ross and 50 Cent have been feuding with each other since 2009 when 50 Cent reportedly looked at Rick Ross in the wrong way. This quickly escalated into a war of words, with both artists penning songs attacking each other, including 50 Cent’s ‘Warning Shot’ wherein he stated: “Rick Ross- I’mma f*** your life up for fun.” Charming.

uncovered It’s a tough, dirty job, but someone has to go to Ibiza. And fortunately for you, dear readers, we found two willing party monkeys to report back on this season’s activities and get you prepared for the closing parties. Firstly, Matthew Charles returned as resident to Café Mambo for his third year running and gave us the low-down on the club gossip. And Infusion’s very own Charl Chaka spent nearly a month sampling the various pleasures, and came up with a definitive list of what’s hot and what’s not this summer…

From Ibiza With Love 2013 It’s that time of year again when I decamp from my home in Dubai to my spiritual home Ibiza. I swap the unbearable summer heat of the desert for the welcome heat of some of the worlds best dance floors and DJ boxes. For me, that means one DJ box in particular, Café Mambo. I am back for my third season

as resident at Café Mambo where I have the utmost pleasure and responsibility of sound-tracking those magical sunsets while welcoming through our doors a seemingly never ending parade of A-list DJ talent. This DJ talent mainly comes in the shape of the Pacha headliners as after sunset we host the pre-parties for the Ibiza institution. During the off-season Pacha made some drastic changes to their line up. Every winter there’s always great interest and gossip about what will change in the coming season, who will stay where they are and who will move. It’s almost as much drama as the football transfer window, this year Pacha was the Gareth Bale of Ibiza. Pacha apparently had become unhappy that the DJ had become bigger than

club itself, in days gone by people would go to Pacha for Pacha but times had changed and people were going to see specific DJs. They were unhappy with the exorbitant fees that were being paid and how these DJs' whims were being indulged. So with a view to bringing the focus back to the party rather than the DJ, there was a winter clear out. Tiesto vacated Mondays and set up shop in the bright lights of Las Vegas. Erick Morrillo who had apparently only missed 1 Wednesday in over a decade was let go. Pete Tong switched from the nightshift to the day shift at Ushuaia and Defected and Luciano’s Vagabundos left with the washe-or-wasn’t-he Losing your mind moments fired director Danny Carl Cox and Carola playing back to Whittle to set up shop across the back at Space. Two techno titans road in the Cipriani owned Bomba (more going blow for blow, it was a little bit epic. on that later.)

To fill the voids left by these previously successful nights new talent was drafted in to support the gargantuan F*** Me I’m Famous which remained in its Thursday night spot. Previous guests such as Chuckie, Martin Solvieg and Bob Sinclar have been elevated to headliners to keep the commercial side of the clientele happy but what is interesting is the influx of underground artists to what has always been considered one of the more, shall we say, accessible clubs. John Digweed has been drafted in as Friday night resident with other names such

as Nic Fanciulli, Joris Voorn and Steve Lawler all guesting to give you a clear indication of where they want that night to go. In a quite dramatic musical change, Erick Morillo has been replaced on Wednesdays by Guy Gerber and his Wisdom Of The Glove party (no, I’m not sure what that’s about either, but it’s caught peoples attention). But the big news is Solomun has taken up a second residency in Ibiza this summer filling the void left by Luciano’s Vagabundos with his +1 concept. It’s quite simple: him and one other guest will play a set each then play back to back to finish the night off. The big question is how have these wholesale changes affected Pacha? If truth were told, it’s been a slow start but it’s gathering pace now, which

Defected did a little tour of the On a personal level, my season got off to a flyer having to leave the Café Mambo opening party early to catch a flight to Dusseldorf for a Mambo On Tour gig. The tour has gathered pace over the winter so I’ve managed to play in

Pacha London, Club Prive in Tallinn Estonia and Dusseldorf this summer. All gigs have been packed and real up for it crowds, so couldn’t I have been happier. Back at Mambo the sunsets have been as amazing as always and I’ve been lucky enough to share the DJ box with some of Pacha’s new signings including Guy Gerber and Solomun. I think being a promoter as well as the DJ is new to Guy but he’s picking it up quickly and his list of guests have been very diverse for somewhere like Pacha. This has allowed the night to grow organically and we’ve had some great nights. Solomon of course has his Diynamic night at Sankeys, but if we’re honest taking on Pacha and replacing Luciano is a big step up. Again his choice of guest has been pretty eclectic, but with the DJ box being moved for the evening it is definitely working for me. When Solomun comes down for the pre-party it’s a roadblock and he certainly knows how to build his sound to a climax. But my personal highlight and perhaps my

highlight of the season so far was an impromptu back-toback session I had with Miss Kittin. After playing for about an hour, she leaned in and I was expecting her to say she was putting her last record on, but instead she asked if I wanted to play back to back for a while. For 2 hours we played back to back, feeding off each other with some of the staff at Mambo calling it the set of the season. In that time, her driver had tried to get her to leave but she sent him away and we only stopped when we did because she now had to go straight to Pacha, fun times. Away from Mambo I have found time for a couple of trips back to London for some studio time and I’ve managed to finish 7 tracks that I’m now road testing. I’ve had some positive feed back from

Guy Gerber and Steve Hulme the musical director of Pacha, so hopefully I’ll find a home for them soon. As I write this, we’re a week away from my favourite month of the season September. The island isn’t so busy, people on the island have made their cash and the weather isn’t too hot, so everybody is in a much more relaxed mood. People who live on the island start to let go a little so the island becomes a more sociable place and all the bittersweet closing parties start to happen. Perhaps if Infusion can find room I’ll update you on them once I’m back in Dubai. Until then Hasta luego mis amigos. soundcloud.com/1matthew charles/nearly-in-the-spotlight-mix

The King of Ibiza this season? None other than Italian stallion Marco Carola: his Music On night at Amnesia is permapacked, and musically the most cutting edge in town, a killer combination. Carl Cox has still got it, finishing his adrenaline fuelled birthday set at Sands with the original mix of Robin S, ‘Show Me Love.’ The island is Solomun crazy, with not one but two rocking parties at Pacha and Sankeys. Slow deep disco jams are big on the island. Big ups to the Insane night at Pacha with Farina, Sneak and Carter. Yeah, you read that right, all three on the same bill. It’s hard to beat Ushuai: a beautiful setting and beautiful people at this ever-busy club.

San An might be the chavvier side of the island, but Ocean Club is a beacon of high end day-time clubbing and is surprisingly good. It’s also a good opportunity for ‘isn’t that what’s his face’ sleb spotting. Also, a big shout out to the Piper mojitos, which were amazing AND healthy. Sticking in San An, Hush is a dark den of iniquity and with a 6am finish, a proper bastion of house music in the heart of cheese-ville. Ibiza isn’t just about boom boom: if you’re looking for an alternative night dedicated to cool music, cool visuals, cool people then head down to the Nightmares on Wax hosted event Wax the Jam.

If you’re looking for something a bit different, then Leo offers live cabaret and music, and is the perfect warm up for Pacha which is within walking distance. It’s also worth checking out the Vintage night, where Jocelyn Brown’s was ace. Big ups to local legends Fred Stone playing at Blue Marlin and Matt Charles holding down a Mambo residency, good to see the region represent! Ushuai’s Used and Abused was the one of the season’s biggest nights, but Loco Dice wasn't quite his usual excellent self when we visited. We’re happy to report that a lot of club and DJs have dropped their egos, with DJs and promoters happy to share DJs and create impromptu back-to-back sessions.

Guy Gerber’s Wisdom of the Glove, odd name and plodding music. Meh. Booom: Ibiza’s newest addition has a decent soundsystem, but you could have been in any high end Dubai club with the Hed Kandi esque music and the overbearing bouncers. Alcohol makes the world go round, but the cost of drinking in Ibiza is slowly spiraling out of control, even Dubai still has a while to go to catch up. DC10: great DJs, great music, but it’s now too packed, too hectic and too much of a mission to get around. Also, to the people arriving with bodyguards at DC10, we don’t think you quite get the vibe.

MEET YOUR PROMOTER

In the first in a new series, we get up close and personal with some of the region’s biggest and best promoters. And what better place to start than with Globalfunk, the longest running nightlife brand in the city, and the main promoter of DnB in the city for a decade, having brought out lynchpins like Andy C, Roni Size, Marky and more.

– GLOBALFUNK Need to know Running since: 2003 Run by: MACH4 (Ben McDonald) Artists played: Goldie, Andy C, Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, Marky, S.P.Y, DJ Hype Local residents include MACH4, Charl Chaka, Somalie, Mr Gremlin, Altitude , MC Prit, Mc Olly Wood and more

Who are you and what do you do?

Hi I’m Ben McDonald (AKA MACH4). Nightlife wise I’m one of the guys who was behind iBO and am the founder of GlobalFunk which has been running in Dubai since 2003. My day job is as one of the partners of SiO2, an event and activation agency in Dubai.

your punters. Be prepared to take the rough with the smooth, especially if you are pushing a very underground sound in a very commercial house driven city like Dubai.

What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

Booking a big name Drum N Bass DJ back in 2001 which we (my wife and I) lost a good chunk of change on thinking it would work when the city What events do you needed more exposure to the currently run? sound to build an audience. Just GlobalFunk. We specialise Well, it was more me thinking in Drum N Bass so are just it would work more than she focussed on that type of Music. I did. I now listen to her! used to run another night called BOUNCE between 2005 - 2009 And the biggest success? when the breakbeat scene was Being the longest running around. I’m not from a house nightlife brand in the UAE (and music background and don’t GCC region I think). The fact have any interest there, I don’t that we are still going after 10 know enough about it. years shows we have been doing something right.

What’s the key ingredient to building a good brand and promoting? Patience, dedication, listen to

Do promoters in Dubai take enough risks?

We’ve all had good, bad, ugly and amazing nights over the years (as I’m sure they will testify to). It’s easy to ride a commercial wave of success and some promoters have done this very well and made a good living out of it. Do they like the music they are promoting? Probably not. I run GlobalFunk for the love of the music, it’s not a viable commercial venture on which to make a living as the music is still off most people’s radars. 400 people at an event is great - for most big nights here that is a disaster. It’s about taking calculated risks, making sure you break even and if you make a bit of money here and there it’s a bonus.

What’s been the most outlandish/odd thing you’ve seen on an artist rider?

Nothing odd, but the best was 1 bottle of champagne, 24 cans of beer, 2 bottles of vodka, 12 cans of red bull… and cold towels. I emailed the agent back saying that if the DJ could consume that much booze and still perform for 2 hours without being carted off in an ambulance I would double their fee.

And any nightmare acts you’ve had to deal with? A few egos here and there but DnB/Breaks DJ’s and MCs are pretty grounded.

What’s the best venue you’ve worked at? iBO.

It was ours. We could do anything there. The Music Room is also great as they are very flexible

How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right? Our nights attract a quite specific audience who are pretty knowledgable about the music, so we have never really got it wrong per se, but there are those who are into a more specific style of DnB that might not be as into it as we may have liked. Most of the time the acts we bring across are well received.

Who would you most like to bring out to the region? Radiohead and The Foo Fighters.

Pro mo ters I ad mire: Ohm Events, Infusion (who we have been partners with on GlobalFunk since 2009), Loaded, Twisted Melons, DUST, Bassworx, AudiOasis, Deep Crates Cartel. Basically the guys and girls willing to take some risks for the better of the Underground/ Alternative electronic music scene here. MATTERs Over a decade from his breakthrough album, Roni Size is back with his third long-player and just as in demand on the Drum and Bass circuit. Ahead of his Globalfunk return to Dubai, we caught up with the Bristol man to find out more…

Welcome back to the city, Andy from Infusion here. Yeah, I got you bro, I’m locked up in the studio at the moment. I’m finishing off the third Reprazent album, hopefully it should be out at the start of next year, and then we can get into the thick of it! How has your sound progressed, where does Reprazent fit into today’s Drum and Bass scene? It’s a sense of maturity I guess,

the album’s full of instruments and it’s the whole process of going into the studio as a unit. Nothing has really changed in that respect, but you have to adapt to the times and make it sound of the day, but still be true to yourself. How do you gauge what the DnB scene is like at the moment, is it through your gigs or hearing tracks that people have sent? It’s a bit of both really, I’m

everyone in the scene, and that’s a big difference between today’s action. I still miss Music House.

DJing every weekend and I get sent a lot of tracks on social media and through Twitter. I’ve got my ear to the ground, but I’ve also got a really colourful history of music, so if I need to be inspired, I can always just sit back and listen to that. It’s amazing the interaction you get with DJs and producers now on Twitter, how active are you? Absolutely, it’s very hard to get in touch with everyone, but a lot of people scan my sets that I post up and that starts a lot of conversations. But I still remember back in the day at the Music House in London. We used to congregate there and give each other direct feedback about tracks. We were rubbing shoulders with

I read an interview recently, where Carl Cox mentioned that you’d taken a year off from music recently to recharge your batteries. How was that, much needed? Definitely not, I don’t ever take any time off. I enjoy making music and I’m always on my laptop working on stuff. What I have done is make more time for my family, I’m in the gym once or twice a week, I’m in a running club so I run 5km each Saturday morning. But I’ll never take time off, if I’m not out there promoting myself then I’m working at new music on my laptop.

Burning out? I’m just getting started, mate

I read The Streets’ autobiography recently, and he essentially burnt himself out and had to take a year off. Is it a worry for you burning the candle at both ends? Nope, never. Never thought about burning out, never even come anywhere close. Burning out? I’m just getting started. You have to take time out for your family and get your balance right, but the words burn out and boredom don’t exist in my vocabulary. Excellent, we’re pleased to hear that. I wanted to ask you about DJ warm ups, how important are they for you? You know what, I always listen to what the DJs are playing before me and always listen out for new tunes from new producers. Sometimes they have some great tunes and I always ask if I can have a copy. Ben (MACH4) is always good whenever I play in Dubai. Have you got good memories of Dubai? People always think that when you come to Dubai the club is full of people dancing around

in traditional dress. But it’s not like that, it’s a real mix of people. I don’t smoke, I don’t do other stuff, so I’m happy going out there. I do enjoy coming there, but the main thing is seeing all the expats enjoying the music. A lot of people get inspired and dance like it’s back in ’89. I’m looking forward to it. What’s big in your sets at the moment? I’m playing a lot of my stuff at the moment, I’ve been roadtesting a lot of new material and fine tuning the production. There’s a lot of good music out there, and I try to cover as much ground as possible. So we’ll be able to hear some exclusive cuts from the new album? Definitely, that’s the plan – you can’t come to somewhere like Dubai and not play a lot of new Reprazent tracks. Globalfunk feat. Roni Size & Dynamite MC, Thursday September 19, Music Room, 9pm-3am, Dhs100 including free Tiger beer.

Thanks to the good people at Red Bull, the weekend of September 26 and 27 is packed full of musical goodness. First up, Detroit techno don Derrick May is joined by Gerd Jansen and a host of local talent for the Infusion Magazine party at 360, while US hip hop DJ Just Blaze will be setting the decks alight at 2Liv. The following night meanwhile sees Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez headlining at Dust’s event at the Tamanya Terrace. Heavyweight. Ahead of this aural extravaganza, we managed to get a few words with Derrick before his big gig.

DOPE DERRICK MAY

s u h t y i a M thebe w e c r o f And that’s not all, as a very, very lucky 32 DJs and producers from around the Middle East have been selected to take part in the Red Bull Bass Camp, where they’ll be schooled by the best in the business over the same weekend.

Welcome back to Dubai – did you ever envisage that 30 years after your techno revolution, you’d be headlining in the Middle East?
Actually it’s my 3rd time in Dubai, and I have been to several other Middle East countries the last 15 years. I always find the hospitality and reception very nice. It is always a pleasure to come back .

Where’s the most far flung place you’ve been booked to DJ? Arica in Chile. Are there any countries or cities that you refuse to play on principle? No.

Detroit has had a pretty turbulent recent history, is that helping or hindering the music scene?
It does not help and it does not hurt. Detroit has lost more than half of its occupance in the last 5 years.

You’ve been creative outside of DJing and producing, and worked on the Tekken soundtracks – how did you put that together? It comes from my relationships in Japan with previous projects, which includes:
Transmat, the Mix Up CD Series, the Ghost in the shell motion picture and video game, and my Air Mix CD.
You’ve described your Hi-Tek Soul project like ‘George Clinton meeting Kraftwerk in an elevator’ – if you could be there in the elevator as well, what would you ask them? I would probably tell them a joke. And what would you choose as the lift music? Classic music. Thursday September 26 Infusion Magazine Experience feat. Derrick May, 6pm-3am, 360 Ohm Records presents Just Blaze, 11pm-3am, 2Liv Friday September 27 DUST feat. Kenny Dope, 6pm-3am, Tamanya Terrace BLAZE

Music News... Spotify the difference

It’s not been a good month for Spotify. First, Daft Punk revealed that they’d broken Spotify’s 8 year record for the most plays through their site, with ‘Get Lucky’ being streamed over 100 million times alone, the equivalent of everyone in England listening to it twice. But it turns out that despite these gargantuan numbers, they made only $9,000 due to Spotify’s payment plan. And the streaming site has just been hit with a lawsuit from Ministry of Sound who complained that the site was allowing users to replicate MoS playlists, opening up the question of what can and can’t be copyrighted.

MUSIC BITES “I thought I just had another gout attack, until suddenly I started getting blisters on my toes.” Dimitri from Paris who recently had the whole of his lower right leg amputated after developing a bacterial infection, recalls the moment he realized something was seriously wrong. Erm, ouch!

“You really don’t need much, living like that. You can get by on next to nothing.” Bankrupted twice Happy Mondays dancer Bez explains he’s happy raising bees and living with ‘like-minded friends on a landsharing community in Wales’. Cosmic.

In the

Mixes come in many shapes and forms now – podcasts, Mixcloud and Soundcloud – but there’s no denying the power of some of the original mix CDs that first captured the raw power of dance music on disc. Which is why when one of our contributors Gareth Davies started the Classic Mix CD series on Facebook and Soundcloud, we had to find out more…

What are you doing and why? I initially started uploaded some classic mix CDs onto my personal Soundcloud, with the intention of attracting more plays on my own DJ sets. As I added more and more… The Classic Mix CD Series just happened. It’s a place for people to celebrate the dance music we grew up with. Not all of us were DJs with a record collection, but everyone into clubbing and DJ culture bought mix CDs. So it made total sense. These soundtracks and their box art represent our favourite tunes, endless clubbing moments, hazy after parties, and a whole bunch of awesome memories. And they still sound just as good. Which mix stuck out for you first? Big question, it’s a joint first place of Derrick Carter’s ‘Cosmic Disco’ and Todd Edwards ‘Locked On’ which both came out in 1996. The energy of the Carter disc is incredible, crazy I was listening to that as a kid. The Edwards disc reminds me of being a student working in

McDonald’s in Sunderland, which was just a really fun time. There is so many others though, check the site! Why it’s important to do this in the age of digital downloads? Great question, easily answered. How many young people now grow up with physical music collection that they stack on their shelves, hold, read and feel? It’s practicality impossible to remember a computer file. But a CD or vinyl is an actual object. It stays with you forever and it creates focus for really awesome memories, hopefully The Classic Mix CD Series reminds people of that.

Infusion’s pick,

A Collection of Classics – Francois K – Andy Buchan My way into dance music came via f*nky house at the turn of the century in Leeds, one of the UK’s dance music strongholds. Dance music to me was all filtered funk, disco drums and gospel vocals. And it wasn’t until I was turned onto the Collection of Classics CDs, released by Azuli Records, that I

appreciated the power of dance music’s history and evolution. The concept was simple: some of dance music’s pioneers – Frankie Knuckles, Francois K, Danny Tenaglia, Louie Vega and more – would compile the records that influenced them, that made them the world-renowned DJs and producers that they are today. And for label owner Dave Piccioni, they were a labour of love that due to the complex licensing laws, made no money and had to break through reams of red tape. That dedication only makes these aural history lessons the more impressive, and the ear-opening experience of hearing house music history for the first time was incredible. Danny Tenaglia’s mix introduced me to tracks like Nomad’s ‘I Wanna Give You Devotion’ (which sounds just as good now as it did 30 years ago), and also put some funk and disco in the mix, both relatively new to my ears. And Francois K only cemented

that notion, as he added early house heavyweights like Jamie Principle and Fingers Inc. to his mix, while also giving me a funk and disco lesson with cuts from Gwen Guthrie, Teddy Pendergrass and Donald Byrd. And, by leaving his CD unmixed, he made the DJ point that dance music isn’t just about seamless transitions, the songs – and the silences between – can be just as powerful as a smooth mix. Funky house had been my introduction, but these collections explained the history and progression of dance music, joining the musical dots. And that’s probably the most important thing a mix CD can do, educate and entertain in equal measure. • facebook.com/ theclassicmixcdseries • soundcloud.com/garethisonit

Album Reviews... Fenech Soler – Rituals

Indie, Dance I www.fenechsoler.co.uk

For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae



Two things have shaped Fenech Soler, the indie-dance UK 4 piece. Firstly, their singer recovered from cancer, which meant the band took an extended hiatus just after their first album broke in a rather large way. And during that time, EDM – or electro with big bold trance flourishes – and deep house have dominated the musical landscape. And both of those events have undoubtedly pushed Fenech Soler’s sound forward. Where once it was loveably chaotic in sound and nature, Rituals is a polished, grown up album that bears the sonic hallmarks of its era. ‘Two Cities’ sounds like Coldplay given a steroid injection, Maiyu sounds like Friendly Fires given a deep house edit while ‘Magnetic’ and ‘And All I Know’ are their EDM calling cards, all spoken word rhymes and euphoric beats that are crying out for a festival size light show. Old fans and hipsters might complain that Rituals is the sound of the band making a bid for the big time, and ‘selling out’ but by updating their formula and giving it a modern, competitive edge they’ve taken the band to a whole new level.

Franz Ferdinand – Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action Indie, Rock

I franzferdinand.com



Blending cool and commercial is a tightrope trick that most bands struggle with at some point in their career. And with Franz Ferdinand almost quitting the music business in the run up to their 4th album as they struggled to balance their work load, it’s something that this Scottish group have struggled with. But on this overdue album (it’s been 4 years in gestation), Alex Kapranos and friends have gone back to their roots, and delivered a 10 track album packed full of dancefloor friendly basslines, shouty-shouty choruses and cunning breakdowns. Essentially, it’s what Franz Ferdinand would sound like if super producer Nile Rodgers had got his hands on the blueprints. But what makes it even more impressive is the band produced this album on their own, creating soon-to-be anthems like the title track, ‘Love Illumination’ and ‘Bullet’ without any outside influence. After a decade in the music business, it seems that Franz Ferdinand really do know best.

Conan Liquid – Oh Oh Seven EP (Infusion Records) House, Disco

I stompy.com/Ep/557545



The names Liquid, Conan Liquid, and his weapon of choice is funky house. And like James Bond, Ray Bans, and Stevie Wonder, some things never go out of fashion. And you can add good old fashioned funky house to that list. Formed by adding a strong 4/4 beat to classic funk and disco records – and adding a few (cow) bells and whistles as well – it’s endured the test of time, and thanks to an injection of French funk at the turn of the century, became a world wide phenomenon. So after returning to the classic warehouse era, touching on classic house, techno and acid, it’s no surprise to see Conan Liquid and Infusion Records turn their attention to funky house. And with impressive results, as first ‘OBL May Care’ and then ‘Quantum of Beats’ both hit their groove from the start. ‘Quantum’ in particular is a propulsive mix of fast and frenetic beats layered over a sizzling funk riff, giving it a classic French touch, erm, touch, while ‘OBL’ is similarly sprinkled in stardust, but with a more measured pace.

DJ Booth: Soulninja

He’s the masked crusader, with a taste for big beats and dancefloor destroying anthems. Welcome to the mysterious world of Soulninja‌

One thing you might not know about me is… I am practically unbeatable at Scrabble and chess. My worst ever job was... As a door to door recruiter for a Karate Club (true story). Dubai’s clubbing scene is... One big fat 125 ltr bottle of champagne, with a million sparklers and inappropriate song requests from holiday makers. But look a little closer, and you’ll find hard working, clued-up promoters bringing out quality acts, week in, week out, along with a deep well of local talent, and world class venues. My favorite ever record is... ‘Kung Fu Fighting’ - Carl Douglas. DJing is much like... Being a Ninja... On a DJ mission, it’s not about how many right moves you make, it’s about not making any wrong ones! I’m really proud of... Winning the Krafty Kuts DJ competition earlier in the year, as well as winning the Pioneer DJ Battle. I can’t live without... Sushi. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... DJing at Sandance on New Years Eve. It was incredible. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... A Skillz. Someone book him out here please! He’s awesome. I’m not a politician but... If I was, they’d call me George Bushido... soundcloud.com/soulninja/2013-summer-mix

Subway system has kittens

Two kittens have been rescued after putting the New York City subway line on paws for more than an hour. Metropolitan Transportation Authority bosses cut power to the B and Q lines in Brooklyn when the cats were spotted on the track at Church Avenue station. Delays continued in both directions between Dekalb Avenue and Brighton Beach stations as rail staff were sent to rescue the kittens. One conductor told frustrated commuters: “There is no service to Manhattan on the Q or B lines because of cats and kittens on the tracks at Church Avenue.” The cats were eventually captured in a milk crate and normal service could resume.

Dark Side of the munchies

Seattle Police have printed up a list of ‘dos and don’ts’ for pot smokers on 1,000 bags of Doritos which they distributed to revellers attending Seattle’s Hempfest last week. Warning locals “don’t use pot in public. You could be cited but we’d rather give you a warning” and ‘don’t drive while high’, the police approved snack chips also included musical recommendations for more confused smokers. “Do listen to Dark Side of the Moon at a reasonable volume,” the bags urged.

The Pan-Arabia Enquirer and Emirates 24/7 to merge DUBAI: In what one media commentator described as “the perfect fit”, The Pan-Arabia Enquirer and Emirates 24/7 this morning announced that they were to merge, creating the region’s largest satirical online news organisation. “We’re absolutely delighted to announce the joining together of our two great brands,” said The Pan-Arabia Enquirer’s acting editor Baltimore Stafford in a statement, adding that he believed there were “numerous synergies” between the companies. Experts have praised the move, claiming that the two have been at the forefront of satirical news journalism across the Middle East and together would be a powerful force in a constantly evolving media landscape. “Emirates 24/7 are known for their groundbreaking stories, such as the recent shocking news of a man who spoke to a girl while she was walking her dog, and their ‘Crazy World’ tales – like the one last year about the man who ate his own children – are the stuff of legend,” said Middle East media expert Gilbert Masoud-Taylor. “I see this sort of editorial slotting in very nicely alongside that of the Enquirer.” While exact details of the deal have not yet been revealed, sources have indicated that the newly merged organisation will work under the name The Pan-Emirates 24/7 and will begin formal operations in April 2014. “To be honest, we’re sent so many Emirates 24/7 stories from readers who think that they’re ours that it feels like we’ve been part of the same team for some time,” added Stafford. The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

Nick Waters VS Mitchell

MITCHELL

It’s an age old battle this issue, as England (Mitchell) takes on France (Nick), as Movida’s two DJs duel it out. Who’ll keep their cool, and who’ll lose their head like a French revolutionary? Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? No, because I’m not famous and my Never. ego isn’t that big! My nickname at school was? I didn’t have one in school, but when I played basketball I got given the I didn’t have a nickname at school. nickname ‘Peanut’, due to the fact I had a big muscular body and a small head, shame! Have you ever injured yourself at work? Yes, but only when I do a Not myself, but others… wrong mix.

You might know that Kit is the main man behind long-running urban night No.1 events, but did you know that he’s got a huge collection of pajamas? Read on for more essential info… What were you wearing in the shoot? Nike Air Max, some random shorts and a Puma shirt. How would you describe your style? My style is relatively simple. I don’t over do it. I like combats with a polo T and some fresh white Adidas superstars. That’s me. How much does your job influence what you wear? In reality it should as I work in nightlife and I should keep up with the new trends, but why would I want to dress like everyone else! What/who influences what you wear, do you follow any fashions/blogs/magazine etc? I honestly just rock what I like and what looks good on. I don’t see someone wearing something and be like, ‘Right I want that.’ I’ve even gone as far as printing my own T-shirts that reflect my personality which are all one-offs. That way I know I’m not bumping into anyone that’s going to be wearing the same T as me at any time. Have you always dressed this way, what’s your style history like? Ahh man! I’ve been through it all, baggy jeans with pin rolls, the grunge look, the pretty boy look, the Monte Carlo look and now it’s just the No.1 Kit Kheedo look. Best item you own? It has to be my Trainers and shoes. Most embarrassing item you own? Probably my collection of PJs. I love them but people think it’s funny that I own so many. facebook.com/No.1EVENTS

Sharply scripted and well paced, this is Pegg back at his best. Classification: 15 Director: Edgar Wright Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman

PREVIEWS The Kings of Summer

Classification: 15 Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts Starring: Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso

Runner Runner When a poor college student who cracks an online poker game goes bust, he arranges a faceto-face with the man he thinks cheated him, a sly offshore entrepreneur. Classification: 15 Director: Brad Furman Starring: Gemma Arterton, Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake

Dancing in the sh*t light Dubai: home to more high end clubs than you can wave a sparkler at, and home to some excellent events like Sandance. But somewhere in the middle of that is a simpering pool of mediocrity, manifesting itself in an obsession with past-it, or never should have made it bands. For at the end of this month, Toploader and the Lightning Seeds – two bands that gained the kiss of death of being championed by Loaded magazine – join forces for what must be the most dreary line up known to beer-bellied men. Sure, it’ll be packed, and we’re sure it’ll be a nice pay day for the bands who can’t get a gig in their own country. But, unpick it all and what are you left with: one band with one song which is a cover and one band who wrote a football anthem, hardly Nobel prize winning stuff. And the crowd will be just as abject: drunken blokes resting their pints on their bellies and, nope – that’s pretty much it. Maybe the marketing bods in the city should come up with a new strapline: Dubai: the elephant graveyard of musical ambition. Monkey Out...
