One of the best aspects of working at Infusion Magazine, is the various strings we have to our bow. And we’ll be flexing one of those big time on December 6 as we turn the Sandance beach into a 2 floor arena, filling the Atlantis Beach with Afrika Bambaataa, Cypress Hill, Josh Wink, Moodymann, The Cuban Brothers, Karizma and The Stereo MCs. As 9th birthday parties go, it’s right up there with the best, and we’ve got the lowdown in our cover story, including an in-depth chat between Deep Crates founder Lobito and Afrika Bambaataa. You’ll no doubt be hearing a lot more about our birthday party in the coming issues, but consider this an official head’s up :-)

What we did
Drop Dread feat Mungo’s Hi Fi and Tippa Irie @ Casa Latina
Once again, the Drop Dread crew delivered an outstanding night of reggae-fueled fun. This month it was Mungo Hi-Fi & Tippa Irie’s turn to entertain the crowd. And entertain they did. The South London based MC was a true showman behind the mic and had the dance floor one leg skankin’ around Casa Latina and interacting with every tune. Performing tracks from throughout his career, it was a nostalgic set for the die-hard Reggae fans as Tippa finished with his 1986 hit ‘Hello Darling’. Mungo’s Hi Fi ended the night with a mixture of Reggae and Dub to a crowd that always comes ready to party until the last dub plate’s dropped.

Looking Back Mike Skinner @ Superheroes, Tamanya Terrace
After a few minor technical difficulties that saw local VJ Kung Fu Panda turn MC to entertain crowd, Mike Skinner jumped onto the decks to rapturous applause. Skinner, best known for rap/garage project The Streets played a hi-tempo genre hopping set spanning the decades. Starting off with old school house and quickly mixing into Dubstep, Drum & Bass, R’n’B and Hip Hop, he dropped some classic Streets tunes along the way that left the crowed oblivious to the 5 minute silence that preceded his set. It was a great opening night for everyone involved including the promoter who ended up on the floor after a few too many. We can’t wait to see what’s next for the Superheroes.
Muse @ F1 Du Arena
Only one word is needed to describe Muse’s live show: incredible. The band performed an energetic set that had even those F1 fans who weren’t familiar with their work jumping around the Du Arena. Their award-winning live show didn’t fail to deliver, from lighting and production to vocals, drums and guitar solos: every aspect of the gig was executed to the highest caliber. Performing to a packed out arena, they played a set comprised largely from their latest album The 2nd Law with a few classic Muse tracks thrown in for good measure. A sterling performance by the men from Devon.

Looking Forward
Local News We are 9 line up confirmed It’s our 9th birthday, so it’s only right that we celebrate this milestone with a huge party. Which is why we’ve taken over Atlantis beach and pulled together a house and urban line up featuring Afrika Bambaataa, Cypress Hill, The Cuban Brothers and the Stereo MCs, while the house arena features Josh Wink, Moodymann and Karizma, plus a whole host of local stars to get the party started. It all takes place on Friday December 6, with advance tickets Dhs250.
In a psytrance Those who bemoan the lack of variety in the club scene, clearly aren’t paying enough attention. Want proof? Then how about a psytrance party packed with hundreds of people in the heart of Bur Dubai. And Ravelations are upping their game for their November 21 date at Chi’s Domeland as they’ve secured French DJ Neuromotor to headline, one of the scene’s biggest names. He’s joined by Liminal Roots on warm up, with early bird tickets at Dhs75 and Dhs125 on the door.
Looking Forward Pacha Ibiza Dubai to open 2014
Spread over 27,000 square feet, Pacha Ibiza Dubai is set to pop its cherry in the early parts of 2014 on the site previously occupied by Trilogy at the Madinat Jumierah. Joining the main club will be a cabaret and restaurant, as well as the famous rooftop bar, while the club will be the only Pacha aside the original to include the name ‘Ibiza’ in its title. facebook. com/pachadubai
Fun Lovin’ Criminals
For a while back in the 90s, the Fun Lovin’ Criminals were a fast and funky proposition, with cult tracks like the Tarantino sampling ‘Scooby Snacks’ becoming a worldwide hit. Now the band have made their mark DJing (while they also return to playing live in 2014), with Huey commanding a regular slot for BBC 6 Music, while Fast and Frank have taken to the turntables, and will be DJing at the Radisson Blu on Thursday November 21. Villalobos gets his Groove on
Looking for an alternative open air festival? Then look no further than Groove on the Grass, the cult techno and house party who have signed up Cocoon featuring Ricardo Villalobos and Raresh for their December 13 party at the Emirates Golf Course. And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got local electronic stars Siamak Amidi, Adam and Deian on board. Tickets cost Dhs200, and it runs from 5pm-3am.
Looking Forward Rumours
Tinie Tempah has been added to the Red Fest line up next February alongside Ke$sha, The Lumineers and Naughty Boy. Cafe Del Mar is moving to a new venue after its association with Meydan Beach Club came to an end. Chicago, the long-running Broadway is arriving in the UAE over the Christmas holidays, starting from December 13 at the World Trade Centre.
The new Reform Bar and Grill at the Lakes is new Dubai’s answer to Loca: good beer, ace alternative music and excellent food. Happy days! Once again, the Formula 1 weekend has been the highlight of the year – Jay Z, Muse and Depeche Mode were outstanding, and even losing our wallet (and marbles) couldn’t put a dampener on things… The O1ne Club on Yas Island is truly something else - a spectactular LED screen, a gladiatorial bullring of a dancefloor and some of the best street art we've seen.
People who moan about competition. It’s what made the human race evolve, so take the competition head on and do your thing! Drivers: zebra crossings in Tecom aren’t just pretty paint road markings, they’re actual things designed to let people – or chickens – cross the road. Halloween ‘walk of shames’ – watching a Centurion and a witch stumble home at 11am truly made our day.
For nearly a decade Infusion has been writing, promoting and becoming an integral part of the nightlife and clubbing scene in Dubai, so we thought it high time we celebrated in style. And with our 9th birthday upon us, we’ve pulled together a two floor, 13 act festival at the Sandance beach on Friday December 6. Local hip hop star and Deep Crates founder Break DJ Lobito spoke to one of our headliners Afrika Bambaataa, while we have the run down on the rest of the line up including Cypress Hill, Josh Wink, Moodymann, Cuban Brothers, Karizma, The Stereo MCs + MC Five Alive and more.
n in a g e It b Afrika… J Lobito by Break D Interview Middle East n (Zulu Natio s Cartel) Deep Crate
Break DJ Lobito: Peace Bam! Great to see you again, as you know I’m doing the interview with you for Infusion Magazine out here in Dubai, you’re coming over to spin at their 9 year anniversary which is dope! It’s been two years since I last saw you in person, how you doing? Afrika Bambaataa: Yeah I’ve been going crazy bro, just runnin’, drivin’, trying to do things, trying to wake people up and trying to get all these certain things going, trying to get our cultural center up and running and all that. Break DJ Lobito: How’s the cultural center going? Is it moving? Afrika Bambaataa: Well right now Brazil is showing more interest, right now United
States is still fakin’ the funk you know. You know whoever is going to give it first we going to go get it! Break DJ Lobito: Yo Bam, so this year is the 40th anniversary of the Universal Zulu Nation and the 39th anniversary of Hip Hop culture so for those who don’t know, what is Hip Hop? Afrika Bambaataa: Hip Hop is a whole cultural movement of DJs, emcees, aerosol writers better known as graffiti writers, Bboys and Bgirls known in the media as breakdancers and that fifth element called Knowledge and in the Universal Zulu Nation we say knowledge, culture and overstanding. It deals with a whole movement of young adults, youth, and adults who have been part of this for a good 39 years and involved in all
the different aspects of music. Having all type of parties for the people by the people and as well as industry, recording artists, known as rap that many people follow. Right now there has been a split between two, like there are the people who follow the rappers then there’s the people who follow the culture.
can hear more of a variety of good music. We have a saying in the Zulu Nation, the old with the new and the new with the old for it becomes trueskool and we don’t care if its hip hop, funk, rock, jazz, metal, classical, reggae, salsa or whatever we play the old with the new and the new with the old for it becomes trueskool.
Break DJ Lobito: What do you think of the commercialisation of Hip Hop? Afrika Bambaataa: Well the commercialisation of Hip Hop is good to an extent that many people who might have had nothing before are now millionaires or doing a lot of big things. But it’s also hurting it because many of these so-called radio stations who claim to be Hip Hop or R’n’B are truly not, because they’re only playing a selective style of music or certain rap records, they don’t play all the other different types of music that’s out there that makes Hip Hop. They think that many people from the trueskool are what people call old skool, who are still making recordings that many of these so-called DJs are not playing on these so-called radio stations so that’s why many people are now turning to internet radio stations or satellite radio stations so they
Break DJ Lobito: Yeah a lot of people here get tied up between the old school and new school thing and they don’t understand that old with the new and the new with old concept or that there is no such thing as dance music except music you can dance to. Afrika Bambaataa: That's right! Every music is dance music depends how you do it, even if you play a slow jam it's dance music so you know all styles of music can be dance music, even what they call classical... Do the classical dance, hehe. Break DJ Lobito: You’ll be playing alongside Moodymannn and a few others for Infusion Magazine’s 9 year anniversary, what can the people here look forward to from your DJ set? Afrika Bambaataa: We’re just going to take you on a
musical journey as I always do! It’s a journey, so could be any style, any music. The people just need to be open-minded, we don’t need no wall flowers, we can’t stand wall flowers just looking at us, I’m not doing no concert, this is not my singing group, we coming to DJ and everybody just needs to dance to the music. Let all your inner self, all your problems all your stress just go away and enjoy the music, universal love. Break DJ Lobito: So Bam I remember from the last time you were here you’re really into your history and culture, what interests you about the Middle East and its history? Afrika Bambaataa: Yeah well it’s another part of Africa on the top spot, hehe, but just seeing all the history of the region and what’s gone on and the indigenous past of the people who came there and the religion of Islam and others that were there before Islam, it’s interesting for me to see human beings and all the different cultural movements that we did all over this planet Earth. Break DJ Lobito: There’s a lot of people getting into hip hop culture here, trying to learn about the culture, new DJs coming up so what advice would you give to the new DJs, from a legend,
from a pioneer like yourself what advice would you give to them? Afrika Bambaataa: Well never be scared of being progressive minded as a DJ, never be scared of trying different music on your audience and dont profess that “I’m just a hip hop DJ” or “I’m just a house DJ”, “I’m just a jungle DJ”, try all the different aspects of music on the people and just to see what you like and what sort of music you will play for the people because if you just play one style of music then that’s just where you’re gonna be in that one style of music. If you play all different styles of music then you get to travel and see the whole planet. Break DJ Lobito: I remember that’s something you said a while back, it's a form of “DJ apartheid.” Afrika Bambaataa: Yes it is! Break DJ Lobito: Ok and what advice would you give to people getting into Hip Hop culture? Afrika Bambaataa: That they should do their research and understand that what you see and hear today is not just Hip Hop, you’ve got to research where it came from, where it’s at and where it's going. And understand that you don’t just
follow rappers, this is only one part of the Hip Hop culture, most people when they say Hip Hop they just think of rappers, that’s far from it. Break DJ Lobito: And what advice would you give to people wearing skinny jeans? Afrika Bambaataa: Well they can wear their skinny jeans, you are your own gods & goddesses, it’s all the same to us, you wear what you want to wear and know what you’re wearing. Just like people take drugs should know what you’re putting into your temple because your body is your first mosque, your first temple and your first church, it’s your body. All other stuff is rituals so if you don’t take care of your own body you’ll see how the supreme force deals with you! Break DJ Lobito: That’s peace! Any other message you want to get out to the people over here? Afrika Bambaataa: Basically just respect the planet because you can be in any religion, deal in any style of music you can be in any force and all that stuff, but if you don’t respect the planet then nature will come put some fire through all your butts and send a tsunami, earthquakes, tornadoes and all type of stuff that it’s been sending already
around the planet because we have disrespected our planet and disrespected the Universe. Our planet is in the Universe and we are not alone so anybody that thinks that we are alone in the Universe and there’s not a bunch of extraterrestrials on our planet, outside the planet and in the planet, you crazy as hell because you really don’t know who is the lord of all the worlds! Break DJ Lobito: Thank you so much Bam, looking forward to seeing you when you come over here! Peace! Afrika Bambaataa: One love, PEACE! We are 9, Atlantis Beach, Friday December 6, 4pm-2am, Dhs250 in advance, for more info head to infusion.ae
The biggest man in pop music, Chic’s Nile Rodgers has a story to match his status. From selling over 250 million records to working with Bowie, Madonna and Daft Punk, as well as beating aggressive cancer, he’s not only the hardest working man in dance music (sorry James Brown), but he’s also one of the most charismatic.
I’m not really sure where to start congratulating you at the moment, you’ve done so much in the past 2 years… Getting the all clear from cancer was right up there, as was going to Number 1 with Daft Punk in 97 countries, and we ended up selling 1 million copies of ‘Get Lucky’ in the UK alone. 1 million copies! Nothing I’ve ever done has ever sold in those number, it’s crazy. And it’s so simple as well, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, Daft Punk vocals… Absolutely, but then think about tracks like Chic ‘C’est Chic,’ that’s ridiculously simple. It is, that’s the epitome of simple. And even though it has a middle 8, or some people laugh and call it a middle 32, it’s actually quite simple. It’s a simple story line about having a dance at Studio 54, but it’s basically just my band having a groove and having a good time. Which is what we do, which is what we’re coming to Dubai to do. Moving us neatly onto your gig here. Back in the 70s, Dubai didn’t really exist on the international radar, if you’d been out here at your peak, you’d have been playing to some uninterested camels and a swaying palm tree...
I went online and looked at the venue and thought, this is going to be the most incredible Friday night of my life. And we get to play with Jamiroquai. What could be better? Music is the one thing that unites cultures more than anything. I’ve been a professional musician as a child, and it’s amazing how our simple little songs used to touch people. How many years ago did I write ‘We Are Family,’ and there’s no place in the world that doesn’t know that song, or ‘Upside Down,’ or ‘I’m Coming Out,’ or Let’s Dance,’ or ‘Like A Virgin’ and all the others. I could walk into a concert hall full of classical musicians and go ‘one, two, aaaawwww’ and they’d go ‘freak out!’ That’s a pretty special gift… It is, as a composer that’s the dream. You dream about people knowing your music and touching your life. Most people don’t know me or know what I do, but they know the music behind you. I think you’re being a bit modest there – I think a lot of people know who you are now, you’re massive. But that’s in the music community, not to the public at large. Which is fine, as that’s the way I’ve always planned it. Chic was a faceless group to an extent. We actually
got the idea by mixing Roxy Music, with the anonymity of Kiss. We’d hide behind designer clothing, that was the equivalent of Kiss’s make up, when we put on the Armani, the Gucci, that’s our thing. Your autobiography was excellent, a proper eye opener into the music industry. How much of a bare all tale was it? I didn’t leave out anything because it was god awful, the only things that I left out were huge stories that were so vast. My original manuscript was over 800 pages, and a first time author can’t put out an 800 page book. You’ve done lots of wellreceived collaborations recently, and you’ve just done one with David Guetta, who’s the Marmite of dance music… David is one of the nicest, coolest guys I’ve met in my life, and the music we’re doing is extraordinary. Basically, it’s Chic feat. David Guetta, it’s one of the coolest songs we’ve ever written. When people do well, when they become popular, the criticism they have to endure is extraordinary. When Chic became popular, with all the hit records I’ve done, people don’t realize that we had a relatively short run. never forced anyone to buy any of my records. I’ve
never been a music hater, except when I was a young jazz musician and I used to think all pop music was beneath me. And now you’re the King of pop. My teacher gave me the hardest lesson, he heard me talking with such disdain about a gig I was going to be playing this weekend and I was going to have to play RnB. And he looked at me and said ‘what makes you think you’re the only consumer? What makes you think you know more than the masses? I’ve never heard that sort of snobbery in the world, you can’t make up our minds for us.’ And you know what, less than a year from that, I wrote my first million selling record. What’s in the set list at the moment for a Chic gig? We always start the show with the very first record we wrote for Chic, which is called ‘Everybody Dance’ and we always end with the last No.1 record I wrote. Our show ends with ‘Good Times’ and then we do an interesting version of ‘Get Lucky.’ We’ve played to more than 2 million people this year, so it’s a tight show. When do all the numbers in your career stop making sense to you?
It’s all incredible for me, as this is really my third career. I had my first career with Chic, then I had 6 failures in a row until I had ‘Let’s Dance’ with David Bowie, and I don’t even know how many No.1s I had after that. Then I concentrated on classical music, and music for video games, and our company is still the number 1 video game soundtrack company in America. And then I was diagnosed with extremely aggressive prostrate cancer, my death was pretty much imminent. I remember meditating and saying to myself, no matter what happens, I’m not going to miss a show, a recording session, in fact I’m going to ramp it up and do more, so I started working with Avicii, Daft Punk and on and on. I’ve actually done more records now than at any point in my life. You must be running James Brown close for the hardest working man in show business tag? I knew James Brown very well, I think I surprassed him when I was a teenager. James Brown still slept 8 hours a night, I only sleep 3 hours a night.

Craig Charles has been many things during his turbulent life: Red Dwarf star, Coronation Street actor, stand up, author and poet, and with a very public drug meltdown to boot. He’s also one of the best radio DJs in the UK, a long-time staple on the excellent 6 Music station, dropping all manner of funk and soul. And on November 22, he’ll be bringing his biggest and best tunes to Dubai for the Sunny Vibe Up party…
Welcome to the city – ever thought at the start of the career that you’d be playing funk and soul records in the middle of the Middle East? NO!
You’ve had a lot of different strings to your bow – actor, comedian, author, poet and DJ. What’s been the most fulfilling, and is radio your most natural habitat now? I’ve enjoyed doing it all really; Your 6 Music Radio Show is I’m quite hyper active and have excellent, how long does it a short attention span so if I take you to find those hidden only did one thing it would drive funk and soul gems? And me mad. where do you find them? Loads of places, record shops, And is DJing a bit like stand online, Soundcloud, Facebook, up but you’re allowed to steal luckily record labels like Kent, other people’s material? Ace, Sue, BGP, Stones Throw, Yes it’s a bit like telling other Hammond Groove, Chin Chin peoples jokes; it’s a lot less send me their stuff. nerve wrecking and to be honest a lot more fun.
How cathartic was writing your autobiography? And what was one of the more outrageous/funny stories in it? It was cathartic writing it, but it remains unreleased until such time a lot of people die. What’s the biggest track in your sets at the moment? I’m not telling you because everyone will nick my records. You’ve said before that you weren’t at your best in the Red Dwarf auditions – what do you think swung it so that you got the job, was it your Northern charm? I still can’t believe they gave me the job although I tried my best to grow into it. It’s daunting and intimating working with such comedy geniuses such as Chris Barrie and Robert. Finally, what can we expect from your set in Dubai? No sleep till way past bedtime, good vibes, good times, good music. Sunny Vibe Up feat. Craig Charles, Friday November 22 Dusk Terrace, Media City, 2pm-late, Dhs85.
First hitting the scene back in 1987, Jumping Jack Frost made his name alongside Grooverider and Fabio as the rave scene exploded. A Kiss FM resident, and a jungle and old skool specialist, he’s one of the pivotal members of the DnB fraternity, and returns to Dubai over a decade after becoming Globalfunk’s first ever international booking…
Welcome back to Dubai, it’s been over a decade since you first visited, what’s changed with you since then? Hi Dubai, it’s a real pleasure to be coming back there after nearly a decade since my last visit. Since I was last there I have been busy travelling the world and my record label V has grown, releasing more albums and lots of singles. I have also started a clothing line for party people and my fans. You can get Team Frost gear from my website www.team-frost.com.
You’ll barely recognise Dubai in that time, where else have you been travelling recently? Since my last visit I have been all over Europe a few times and I’ve toured America extensively once with Roni size Reprazent on a full tour bus thing with the full band. What’s in your sets at the moment, how often do you drop old skool sets? My sets at the moment are mainly Liquid and rollers with a sexy funky vibe and I also play a few old skool jungle sets that I really enjoy doing. Look out for a classic of DnB set when I get there with MC Moose on Nov 21st. How has the Drum and Bass scene changed since you first started out? Since I first started, the DnB scene has really come a long way, the music is very technical and there are always new producers pushing the music to the limit. As always the best records are often the most simple.
Is it easier or harder for Djs to break through into clubs now than when you started? I think now there is a lot of talent out there and it’s really much harder to break through but if you are good and work hard you get there… We hear you got preferential treatment from the passport office when you went to get it renewed as they were a fan of yours... Ha ha, yes my passport ran out and was dreading going to the passport office as it always takes forever but I was recognised and also saw a old friend that works there so it worked out nicely. I was in and out in ten minutes.
DnB fans are pretty passionate, anything weird or funny they’ve ever done for you? Naaa, they’ve only showed me lots of love and support over the years and been very kind and for that I am truly grateful. And what should people expect from your set in Dubai? My set in Dubai will be filled with classics from over the years and a few new tunes at the end to end it in style. Globalfunk feat. Jumping Jack Frost and MC Moose, Thursday November 21, The Music Room, 9pm-3am, Dhs100 including a free Tiger beer.

One of South Africa’s finest female DJs, Lady Lea is no stranger to Dubai with several shows under her belt. Ahead of her return to the city for House of Afrika, we sat down with her to find out more…
Welcome back to the city, what’s the reception been like for you when you’ve come before? Thank you, it’s good to be back! I always have an amazing time when I come to Dubai. Such and energetic and friendly crowd. And what’s been happening in your world since you last came out? I have been DJing a lot around South Africa and Africa. I am working on a new digital compilation release, and I have just launched a weekly event in Pretoria called Sweet Sessions Sundaze! What’s the club scene like back in South Africa, can you compare it to anywhere else? It is pretty much packed everywhere. All types of music are featured in various clubs and the dance scene is booming. Major international acts and festivals are heading to South African shores next year, so I guess we are up there with the rest of the major party capitals of the world! Where else have you been travelling this year? I have been to a few African countries this year, which has been really fun and heartwarming to see the love that people have for music even in rural areas.
Has being a female DJ helped or hindered your career? Honestly, I think it has helped me for the simple reason that people notice a lady DJ behind the decks quicker than they do a male. But they often also expect a lady not to be as good as a guy so I always need to bring my A game. And how do you keep up with all the social and technical changes in your career? Technology will always progress,- so it is good to stay open to it. I work closely with Pioneer so I get to use the best and latest equipment. Socially I stay in touch with my supporters on all of my social media profiles, and I make sure I am very active and I try to respond to everyone. It’s fun, but it can also take up a lot of time! What have been the big hitters in your set recently? Anything by Tapesh, Kyle Watson, L.A Cruz and Stimming. And finally what should we expect from your set out here? It’s going to be deep, bouncy, chunky and fresh! House of Afrika feat. Lady Lea, Friday November 22, Dek on 8, 4pm-3am, free entry.

Music News... Flo Rida and Deamau5 beef
It seems, as if we didn’t know already, that Flo Rida is a few sandwiches short of a picnic. With his new Beamz music device now on sale, and presumably costing a fortune in unsold warehouse space, he’s retorted to Deadmau5’s prank (where a clip showed him throwing the device out of his Ferrari window, before driving over it) by getting a Deadmau5 looka-like to plug his product. Titled ‘Beamz by Flo: Even A Mouse Can Play,’ someone looking eerily like Deadmau5 with his mask on – or perhaps it was Mickey Mouse? – is playing the device in the 30 second clip. And the response? A promise from Deadmau5 that his lawyers were already on the case.
RIP Lou Reed We’re sad to report that Velvet Underground main man and much loved grumpy man of rock music, Lou Reed, has passed away at the age of 71 due to liver disease. Two of his biggest tracks, ‘Perfect Day’ and ‘Walk On The Wild Side’ have re-entered the charts, while dozens of stars paid tribute to him including David Bowie, The Strokes, Morrissey and more.
MUSIC BITES “500,000” Annual sales of vinyl have crossed the half a million mark in the UK, the highest figure for a decade, with an estimated 700,000 by the end of the year.
Look and Listen Money, money, money!
Would be bands take note – money does in fact make the world go around. Or at least it helps ease the way, after an American producer who hadn’t been paid by metal band Altitudes, turned the hardcore band’s work into an EDM number, even going so far to create a Youtube video of the band looking ‘cool’ in the studio. The band then took to the comments section of the video, saying they had intended to pay him for the work he’d done, but perhaps they shouldn’t complain too much after the video of the unsigned band went viral within hours, something most unheard of bands would kill for…
Sign of the times
Bad news for wannabe David Guettas – Google are looking to patent the heart-hand gesture you increasingly see vapid DJs shove at any nearby cameras or clubbers. The online giant want to use the sign as part of their Google Gass technology, but if Google are happy to go down this sign hand detecting route, there could be trouble ahead...

Album Reviews... Avicii – True House/Electro/ED
I
avicii.com
It would have been easy for Avicii, we assume, to bosh out a debut album full of ‘Levels’ – you know, big my-first-trance-chord, euphoric numbers with a twinkling electro line, all tailor made for radio listening. And yet, his first artist album takes more risks than you would associate from a chart topper, and a young one at that. Yes, there are nauseating moments of pop trance (pance?) from Tim Bergling - ‘Hope There’s Someone’ and ‘You Make Me’ are electro pop by numbers, effectively five minute long breakdowns with ‘epic’ vocals over the top. But by including several country meets house tracks, including lead single ‘Wake Me Up’ and ‘Hey Brother,’ the 24 year old Swede has genuinely done something fresh and zingy. And while that same description could be applied to a just-laid number 2, there’s something to be said for not taking the obvious route to serotonin heaven. And with guests like Aloe Blacc and Nile Rodgers lending their considerable talents, there are enough tracks like ‘Shame On Me’ (a hi NRG Daft Punk tribute) and ‘Liar Liar,’ which sounds a bit like Flash Gordon covering The Doors, to make this album stand out from the usual pance.

Dizzee Rascal – The Fifth Hip Hop, House
I
dizzeerascal.co.uk
Since bursting on the scene over a decade ago with the Roll Deep Crew, Dizzee has increasingly walked the tight rope between cool and commercial. He was the epitome of cool when he first came out, the poster-child of grime, the UK’s homegrown answer to American hip hop. And with debut album Boy In Da Corner rising up the charts, it wasn’t long until he commanded impressive commercial success. But while he’s largely balanced things during his career with cheesy anthems like ‘Holiday’ smoothed out with pop monsters like ‘Bonkers’ and the Calvin Harris hit ‘Dance Wiv Me,’ his fifth album marks a tipping point, the musical moment where he jumps the shark. Possibly looking to break out of his mid-level pop position, Dizzee has jumped on the electro/ EDM bandwagon, meaning many of his aggressive rhymes are backed up by ubiquitous beats and trance-like melodies. And you have to look no further than the collaborators to point accusing fingres, with Robbie Williams, Jessie J and Will.I.Am on board. There are some redeeming features – ‘Bassline Junkie’ is a simple but fun bass anthem, while ‘Life Keeps Moving’ is an effective enough downtempo number – but those apart, there really is little to recommend this album.

Karizma – Wall of Sound
House/Hip hop soundcloud.com/r2records/wall-of-sound-preview
It’s not just writers who struggle with a mental block, musicians and producers suffer at the whim of the subconscious mind as well. Which perhaps explains the 4 year delay in output from Baltimore native Karizma. Well, that and constantly touring the globe... But with some studio time under his belt, the ideas poured forth, and impressively so – not just an extended EP or even an album to mark his return to form, he delivered a whopping 43 tracks, which was trimmed down to a double CD of material. Wall of Sound carries Karizma’s emotive sound throughout its house and hip hop journey. Creating such a wide-ranging album might sound ambitious, but Karizma unites his scuzzy, RJD2 hip hop approach with his melodic, tech-lite house by using similar textures and booming beats. The end result is sprawling, and tough to take in on one sitting, but there’s plenty for DJs and long-time fans to savour in this dense Wall of Sound.

For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
Bass music fans are spoilt for choice right now, with new albums from Chase & Status, Camo & Krooked and Sub Focus all out. These more ‘commercial’ offerings are likely to be popular with a wide range of listeners - something this new 28 track remix album from DnB stalwarts Black Sun Empire has not set out to achieve. For those in the know, the track list reads like a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of the current Drum & Bass scene with remixes from legends Noisia, Gridlok and S.P.Y. amongst an assortment of BSE’s own VIP tracks. Highlights include the Prolix remix of ‘Dawn Of A Dark Day’, June Miller’s rework of ‘Killing The Light’ and Noisia’s frankly massive version of ‘Arrakis’. This is not dance music for the faint hearted – the combination of punishing bass and 2 step beats is unrelenting, but even if you’re not a DJ, this is worth investigating. – Tim ‘Woodle’ Woodstock

MEET YOUR PROMOTER One of the longest running weekly nights in the Middle East, and one of the most consistent, audio tonic has been pushing house music to the masses via their 360 base for nearly a decade. Audio tonic main man Mike Bufton, AKA Mr Mr, gives us his story‌
– audio tonic Need to know Running since: 2006 Run by: Mike Bufton AKA Mr Mr Artists played: Bicep, Danny Daze, Jimpster, Tom Middleton, Funk D’Void, Ralph Lawson Local residents include Raxon, Julian Jinx, Rich Showell, Megadon Betamax, Vas Floyd and more... Venues worked at 360, Alpha, Creamfields, Story
What’s the key ingredient to building a good brand and promoting? Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Mike, also know as Mr Mr, or the man who does not sleep. I founded the audio tonic brand, we put on some pretty cool events, have a record label and now an artist agency.
What events do you currently run?
Friday’s at 360º (audio tonic Sunset Sessions), fortnightly Saturdays (2nd & 4th of the month) at 360º called SOCIAL (in collab with Sole Agency for the live artists) and a new weekly Thursday night concept called A Night’s Tale at a new and very cool down to earth venue called Story in Media City.
Consistency is always the key factor, with everything you do. When building any brand you need to offer the consumer something unique, but most of all believe in the brand. I like to think the audio tonic brand purveys that, we play music we love, we book DJs we love, we release music we love, and have been doing it for a long time here. Promoting is a gamble, you’ll never really know how many people come to your events because they saw a social media or magazine advert, but the key is telling the right people about your events.
What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?
here now, clubs/promoters book big names, small names, weird names. There’s something for everyone now courtesy of promoters taking risks.
Probably booking flights wrong and having to pay excessive fare differences to change them I guess, it happened a couple of times (funnily enough What’s been the most when I booked them first thing in outlandish/odd thing the morning!) you’ve seen on an artist rider? And the biggest success? Skittles. Just go and buy some I’ll tell you that when we have you idiot. audio tonic offices in cities across the globe. And any nightmare acts you’ve had to deal with? Do promoters in Dubai You do get them yes, some with take enough risks? much bigger boots than others, Yes I’d say so, of course you but that’s what comes with the have to look at viability when job. You just get on with it. The making bookings, but there is so nice guys you book again. The much diversity within the scene not so nice guys you don’t.
What’s the best venue you’ve worked at? 360º of course.
How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right?
I think we’ve balanced it well. There are some purists who used to support us who say we’ve gone ‘commercial’, which is total bull dust. As a brand we’ve grown over the years, we bring some of the most cutting edge names out there, at one of the most spectacular venues in the world. We play very upfront music but it’s always accessible, and essentially music/acts we love.
Who would you most like to bring out to the region?
I’m doing it right now.
Pro mo ters I ad mire: The Analog Room guys are doing a very good thing for the city, as are the Electric Days crew. Essentially booking more niché DJs and artists, they have good platforms to experiment with music. Blue Marlin are also booking great names. Audio tonic, every Friday at 360, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, 4pm-3am, free entry, audiotonic.ae

What’s your earliest musical memory? The Beatles. The best lyrics of all time are... Anything from Tupac’s “Dear Mama,” absolutely classic! What’s the one thing you’d like to request on your rider? Business Class flights. What’s the one song you couldn’t cover? De la rey (South African Ed: De La Rey is a famous South Afrikaans song). freshlyground.com facebook.com/freshlyground
DJ Booth: Carlos
As the resident DJ at the Riva Beach club on the Palm, Carlos has one of the more enviable DJ residencies in the UAE‌
One thing you might not know about me is… I have been practicing Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) for the last 6 years, so could kill you with my little finger. My worst ever job was… I worked in a bank call centre in Cairo. I couldn’t stand it and was happily fired after 2 days! My favorite ever record is... I can’t pick one! It keeps changing... DJing is much like... It’s like listening to the waves in the beach; you can sit by yourself for hours and find yourself in another dimension. That’s music for me. I knew early on that music would probably take up a good portion of my life. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... One of the most diverse, impressive and definitely unique clubbing scenes in the world. DJs come here from across the globe and clubs are famous for hosting the crème de la crème of DJ talent. I’m really proud of... That moment when I see people enjoying and having a blast to my music. What track could you drop in every set? Hotel California by The Eagles. I can’t live without... I’m addicted to Call of Duty on my Playstation! My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Being resident DJ at RIVA Beach Club, one of the top glamorous beach spots in Dubai. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Chocolate and of course my Playstation. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... Definitely the 70s, the time of love and peace. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Mr Roger Sanchez. I’m not a politician but… I’m an MMA fighter.

A UK design duo who invented a Wonderbra-style support vest which makes man boobs look like muscles have sold thousands of units, Time Magazine reported this week. Funkybod Muscle Tops retail at £29.99 and are ‘a bra for men disguised to hide your manboobs’, one TV news report explained. “Worn as a normal undershirt garment, the Funkybod top is a great confidence booster for men in the same way a padded bra works for women,” the website] explains. “Because of the way it is designed, there is a marked improvement in the look if the wearer has the typical visual manboob issues when wearing a shirt.” Funkybod founders Ash Bhunnoo and pal Ricky Robinson told the Daily Star their shirts are proving popular with bouncers and gym goers near their home town in Medway as well as one group of customers further afield.
WEIRD BITES Don’t twerk “$1” The cost of marijuana in Uruguay after authorities announced they’re launching a legal, government controlled market in 2014.
There’s a lot of blame to lay at Miley Cyrus’ door, but perhaps the biggest issue is her part in getting ‘twerk’ into the modern lexicon. It’s now gone a step further and become legal, as students in America have been made to sign a contract saying they won’t twerk at their Prom. Head teacher Susan Chittim said: “This, unfortunately, has become the norm. Some of this crazy dancing that makes others feel uncomfortable. Some kids feel left out because of the dancing that occurs.” Capital Gazette reported the contract signed by students also outlaws “grinding and butt-bouncing.”

The whole lane will also be an extra 50cm wide, and will be cordoned off from the other lanes with a red velvet rope. “We live in a society where luxury lovers can enjoy exclusive access to special areas in the nightclub, metro and supermarket,” said project spokesperson Tarek O’Dowd. “Given our deep love of cars and driving, it seems ridiculous that we hadn’t yet brought this service to the road.” While the price has yet to be revealed, organisers have said it would be set “disruptively high” in order to prevent the Gold Class lane from becoming overcrowded. “We want our VIP users to be able to enjoy privileges befitting of people of their elite status. The Gold Class lane will offer them the world’s most lavish drive, be it to work, the beach club or the nine-star underwater shopping mall.” Unfortunately for some, the new lane won’t be available to all drivers. Only owners of top-end car brands – a list of which will soon be released – can apply. “And we’ll be installing manned vehicles along the route – almost like club bouncers – to ensure someone in a dusty Lancer or Corolla doesn’t try to take advantage of the lane and ruin the experience for our members,” says O’Dowd. The Pan-Arabia Enquirer is the Middle East’s premier source of satirical news. This means that it’s entirely made up and not intended, in any way whatsoever, to be taken as factual.

NOVEMBER 14
Money matters Despite the Monkey democratic running on a currency of dried banana skins (the rumours about smoking them are true), I’ve grown used to your human fiscal systems. Money, be it dollars, dirhams or Monopoly currency as some people seem to use it, is good – it gets you things banana skins can’t. Which is why, when I’m owed money from DJing – which is a very highly skilled form of monkey business – from the last decade, that I start to see red and bring out my voodoo dolls. Sure, venues are expensive to run, and with all the competition, red tape and hotel bureaucracy, you’d have to be a bit tapped to get involved in the first place. But DJs are the ones who make the clubbers come in, and make sure they stay, and make sure they don’t peak too soon, and make sure there are enough lulls to keep the bars busy. We do, infact, drive your business. So when you don’t pay us, or hide behind a wall of excuses that make ‘my cat ate my homework’ look plausible, it instantly lowers your credit to sub-human scum territory. And if there’s one thing DJs like more than time-warped intros, it’s to bitch and moan, and you can bet your last dirham that they’re bitching about you right now...
