It seems the promoters in the UAE have got festive a little early this year. How else do you describe the musical goodness that’s happening on December 6 and 13? First up, we’re holding our We Are 9 birthday party at Sandance beach with Cypress Hill, Afrika Bambaataa, Josh Wink, Moodymann and more all appearing over 2 stages. Not to be outdone, the following weekend sees the Groove on the Grass team deliver an outdoor techno masterclass with Ricardo Villalobos, going head-to-head date-wise with Creamfields in Abu Dhabi who have The Prodigy, Calvin Harris, Disclosure and Above and Beyond on their bill. All we need now is for the Prodigy’s Keith to don a Santa hat and we’ll be all set for an early Christmas…

Looking Back

What we did

Chic + Jamiroquai @ Sandance When you’re Nile Rodgers, you can pretty much cherry pick from the best musicians in the world for your band Chic. And that was evident from the start, as they darted in and out of four decades of pop history, with their own tracks ‘I Want Your Love’ and ‘Forbidden Lover’ the stand out tracks until the drummer – the drummer! – dropped a peerless David Bowie cover for ‘Let’s Dance’ that would have had the Thin White Duke up and grooving. If there’s one band that would never struggle to follow Chic it’s Basement Jaxx, and they duly turned the bass up to 11 and dropped an hour long carnival of house, electro, dubstep and drum and bass to the packed out crowd. And with new track ‘Mermaid of Salinas’ launching their set, they look to have found a new Jaxx classic to sit alongside ‘Where’s Your Head At’ and the rest. Jamiroquai were never going to take this display of musicianship lying down, but their answer to these short, sharp hits of pop genius were to turn their loquacious funk into overblown jazz odysseys. And while that worked for the first 30 minutes, they meandered their way over their set, meaning trance closer Richard Durand had to be bumped from the show. Not that many people in the crowd seemed to mind, as with perfect weather, seamless entry and bars and some very special performances, Sandance raised the big event bar once again in Dubai. Roll on NYE.

Looking Back Adidas Originals @ Media One Car Park

So after some great pre event buzz it seemed like everyone was heading to the Media One Hotel for another car park session. And they’d opened up several levels of the car park, meaning that the party remit could be expanded. Earlier in the evening there were some solid activities, including a mini skate ramp, to keep the night moving forward but sadly these seemed to end a little prematurely as soon as the night really got started. The venue really is a monster of a rave venue, and despite the ridiculous heat situation at the heart of the party, caused by 3,000 people moving and dancing, it was a solid hip hop and house affair. Sadly the heat eventually got the better of most which genuinely made it tough to stay; here’s hoping the next session can have some additional cooling to counter was should be a very hot party, but for the right reasons. – GarethIsOnIt

Mike Tyson @ WTC

A lot of words can be used to describe Mike Tyson. athlete, animal, champion, criminal, fearless, feared… the list goes on. One we never imagined adding to the list was comedian. However Mike Tyson’s one man show was a compelling yet hilarious portrayal of his life story. Directed by Spike Lee, the show chronologically captured memorable moments from the world champions life. Touching on subjects like his troubled childhood, failed marriage, journey to the world title and competitive rivalries in and out of the ring, the show was both heartfelt and hilarious in equal measure. Spike Lee’s involvement in piecing together the event is telling and Mike’s charisma with his lisping voice was captivating. The anecdotes came thick and fast; our favourite was his run in with ex wife Robin Givens and a young Brad Pitt, which left the Hollywood heart throb cowering in his boots.

Old jokes home I met this dwarf called Peter the other day. He’s a baker and he was telling me all about baking flatbreads. It was fascinating. I love the pitta patter of tiny Pete.

Short and tweet @Willferrell I want to have 3 kids and name them Ctrl, Alt and Delete. Then if they mess up, I will just hit them at once

Value added?

US tax authorities are going to court over the valuation of Michael Jackson’s estate. The IRS think it’s worth $434 million. MJ’s people reckon it’s closer to $2,105.

Looking Forward

Local News NYE news

It’s the biggest – or most overrated night of the year – and the line ups for December 31 are starting to be released. The biggest so far is Sandance, who have announced that Emeli Sande, Paul Oakenfold and Axwell for their big bash, with the promise of their best fireworks display yet. Over in Ghantoot, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE have confirmed that Canadian deep house/techno duo Art Department will be welcoming in 2014, with a one ticket, open bar deal. And at 360, the audio tonic residents will be taking care of business, with Mr Mr, Raxon and Rod Lee Winters on hand, with prices starting at Dhs950 for an open bar ticket.

Jazz Festival line up finalized They’ve teased out the announcements, but the full line up for the 2014 Festival City event has been confirmed, with guitar hero Santana added alongside rock band Stone Temple Pilots (pictured). They’ll be appearing alongside Olly Murs, The Wanted and Jamie Cullum from Feb 13-21. Dubaijazzfest.com

Looking Forward

And all that jazz If you’re looking for an alternative to mall trawling – or never ending board games – to entertain the family during the festive period, then the debut performance of long-running musical Chicago could be just the ticket. Running from December 19 until January 4, the all singing, all dancing Broadway classic will be hitting the World Trade Centre with more than 40 performers delivering the Grammy award winning show. Tickets start at Dhs245.

Monkey business The hip hop Boombox series continues apace at The Music Room on Friday November 29 as Remi Kabaka, one of the Gorillaz Sound System members, drops by for a DJ set. As well as being part of Damon Albarn’s collective, the Nigerian drummer has also performed with the Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood and Paul McCartney, with support on the night from Somalie, Makrodot and DJ Mo City, with live performances from ink Q, Eslam Jawaad and Sana.

Looking Forward Rumours Paul Van Dyk could be heading out to Dubai next year if one promoter gets their way. One promoter is keen to bring Dubai favourite Black Coffee back out to the UAE to welcome in 2014. Eric Clapton has been confirmed for a show at Dubai Media City Ampitheatre on Thursday March 6.

Tim Derry, one of Sandance’s main promoters and organisers, spotted helping clear the beach of empty beer cans during Chic’s set. Bravo sir, bravo. Dubai International Film Festival is around the corner, make sure to get your tickets for the big hitters early from dubaifilmfest.com Big ups to everyone involved at the Vinyl Market at Ductac. We got some 70s funk bargains, got to listen to some fresh live music and got geeky with dozens of vinyl purists.

People who don’t wait for you to get out of the lift before piling in. What. Is. Wrong. With. You? Drunk table monkeys who think that having the biggest bottle in the club means you have a right to decide the music. You don't. Wet weather Facebookers. Yes, it rained, we get it. No real need to post it to FB along with dozens of othe muppets though...

Super Subb-An One of the hottest properties on the British house market, the One Records main man is returning to the Dubai sunshine for a headlining set at Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE. Ahead of his trip, we spoke to him about Ibiza, moving to Berlin and the magic of saunas. You’ve had a meteoric rise to the top – what have been the pinch me moments? Probably too many to go into from the last few years, but playing two of my favourite venues were certainly up there, Panorama Bar and Circo Loco DC10. I played both this year and I will always remember those shows. And when did DJing and producing become a full time career for you? I guess around 3 years ago now. You made the move from Birmingham to Berlin – how important is being in Berlin to furthering your career? I find Berlin has its own scene, you can easily just live here and

get caught in that bubble as so much is going on this city. I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to live in Berlin to further your career, but for me the move here really helped, it has a large impact on your outlook. And what’s your pick of the Berlin clubs? I obviously, like a lot of people, love Panorama Bar. I like Watergate on a Wednesday. Stattbadt is a great venue and I also love Wilde Renate.

You were a resident at the Below parties you founded, presumably you got to drop opening, main and closing sets – how much of an advantage does that knowledge give you over other DJs? You just have to make sure you’re prepared for all situations, before a guest you need to do the right job and not go to heavy, after a guest you need to make sure you've got the music and energy to follow.

You’ve played in Dubai before – does it compare to anywhere else you’ve played? It’s different in Dubai, I played a year ago and it’s very different to say playing in Berlin or London, but I like it. I can’t really compare it to another city, it’s quite unique You’ve got a hectic gig schedule, with Switzerland, China, Thailand, Dubai and Italy in a 10 day stretch. Does that schedule make DJng feel like work? It can at times, touring is very intense but you get used to it, if you don’t you can’t really do this job, I guess the work bit is probably the travelling. The only time it can be hard is going straight from gigs to the airport, mentally doing this on the weekend can be straining, however to travel around is not the worst. I make sure I’m loaded with films. It always helps if the hotel has a sauna, this really works wonders on the weekend. How has 2013 been for you personally and professionally? Amazing. It’s been a roller coaster of year, it’s been the most intense year of touring which has been great to play so many solid parties and visit so many places. It has

meant travelling around and being away from home a lot but I’ve been enjoying it. And what do you hope to achieve in 2014? I will be back in the studio and concentrating on One Records and continuing to play music around the world. The time has come, the date is nearly upon us; 19 acts from across the world, 2 live bands, 4MCs,15 DJs and thousands of clubbers spread across 2 arenas on Atlantis beach. Ahead of our big bash, we sat down with Josh Wink and The Stereo MCs to catch up with them ahead of their Friday December 6 date

Welcome back to Dubai, you’re playing alongside Moodymann and Karizma, as part of a US house invasion… I can’t wait!

sh

Guru Jo

A mainstay of the house scene for several decades, ‘Higher State of Consciousness’ main man Josh Wink will be dropping all manner of tasty house and techno at our We Are 9 Birthday party…

We’ve also got Afrika Bambaataa on the same bill, are you fans of theirs? I grew up in Philly, so of course… I was all about Afrika Bambaataa, great visionary! You’ve played here several times, how does it compare with some of your best gigs? The gigs there are always super! The first time was amazing, people are always up for good music in Dubai, so, I enjoy the performances there.

Dubai is pretty much the other side of the world from America, are you travelling round here as part of a tour? Yep, I’m far away from Philly. However, my life is simply being on the road all the time. I am writing this interview from Mumbai India. I will be in Dubai on Friday the 6th, then Saturday in Sofia Bulgaria. A quick and heavy trip, but always looking forward to performing! You’ve got a very strong following, does it ever still surprise you the reaction people have to your music? I never take anything for granted. And feel blessed and happy every day knowing that I am still making a living doing what I love and doing what I’ve been doing since I was a teenager! I feel fortunate that I can still make music as a producer or as a DJ and people enjoy and are inspired. You made the track ‘I’m Ready’ under your Size 9 name and it’s still played out today – we heard that the extended, super long breakdown was your way of having fun at the other producers at the time? Funny that the songs that I made in the mid 90s are still

played today. I like it! Music is always a way to have fun. But, I’ve never heard that I did it about ‘Having fun at the other producers”. That’s new, haha. My music is based on tension and this track was the ultimate “tension” filled track! When you think something is about to happen in the track, it doesn’t happen. Like having to sneeze and never being able to… What’s big in your sets at the moment, and how would you sum up what you’re playing? I pretty much still play a mixture of house and techno. Techno that blends with house and house that blends with techno. I’m playing a lot of things on Ovum at the moment, we’re signing great music and getting ready to celebrate 20 years of running the label in 2014! And what should we look forward to from your set? My sets are spontaneous and get inspiration for the direction of my set by the DJs before and the vibe of the crowd. So, I never know. But, I will give you guys my 100%, I love doing it! Last time it was a real vocal crowd, so, I’m look forward to people screaming about again. See you soon!

Get Connected With a monstrous million selling hit under their belt and several Brit Awards, the Stereo MCs are still a force in the game, as their latest record Emperor’s Nightingale proves… Welcome to Dubai, you’re on the same bill as Cypress Hill, Afrika Bambaataa, Moodymann and more - how does that sound to you? It sounds great, they’re all musical heroes. And what will you be bringing to your show, how does it work live? Our DJ Set is dancefloor beats and energy with some deep bass and some vocal love. Two DJs and Five Alive MC vibesman and Rob touching the mic occassionly also.

You’ve got Jamie Cullum guesting on your new album, what did he bring to the track? Jamie is a cool guy with a great feel and he plays the piano a lot better than we can! You’ve also got a track called Desert Song on your new album, fitting that you’re coming out to Dubai, what’s it about. Isolation and discovery. Your big hitter was ‘Connected,’ what was life like for you when that came out? Exciting, and busy. We toured everywhere many times, met some great people and played many great shows. It was inspiring and consuming, our life changed.

You had a turbulent time after that with record label politics, would you have done anything differently looking back? We didn’t have turbulent time with the record company, more a turbulent time with ourselves, we were looking for where we wanted to go with our music, we didn’t really want to just churn out records just to have hits we needed to feel. It took a while to get to that place. No regrets, we are still here more excited about music than ever. What have been the other big moments in your career to date? Glastonbury 93, last night's DJ set in Berlin with Terranova, our first time on Top of the Pops, The Brit Awards so many moments that keep happening, recording our new LP is a moment and it’s still ongoing… And where do you see the Stereo Mcs in the music world today? In the eye of the storm, the best is yet to come. We Are 9, Sandance Beach, Friday December 6, 4pm3am, Dhs250 in advance from Platinumlist, Time Out tickets, Virgin Tickets.

A hugely experienced DJ, and one with several Dubai gigs under his belt, Paddy Freeform is a musical encyclopedia, happily playing across the board. Ahead of his house music gig for us at 360, we caught up with him to chat strip searches, broken ankles and teaching

Welcome back to the city, you’ve played here several times – what are your good and bad memories of the city and gigs? One gig that stands out was one of the early Nasimi beach parties where I played before Gilles Peterson, amazing setting, great crowd and the vibe was just right. One bad memory is coming through Dubai airport with a record bag and my dreadlocks 2 days after the infamous Grooverider incident. Uh oh, I was questioned for 3 hours and strip searched twice! I've not really had any bad gigs, although one time I got to Dubai, got to the club where I was supposed to be playing and my DJ permission hadn’t come through, so it was a bit frustrating turning up all this way to a gig, being there ready to go but not being allowed to play. You’re a hugely eclectic DJ – does that help or hinder you in your career? It definitely helps, all those different influences and inspirations to draw from. You started out by getting a job in a record store and working your way up, is there an equivalent job for young people these days? Not really, record shops used to act like the hub of the community and I got most of my early gigs through people I met

in the shop, such as resident DJs, promoters etc. The shop also used to promote its own events that were successful and also helped me to get gigs. I actually work with young people now teaching music production and helping them get started in the music industry, and although the record shop ‘hub’ doesn’t exist anymore there is a huge online community out there. This wasn’t around when I started out so our interactions were always fairly locally based. Now connections can be made across the world and collaborations are happening online, so in a way there’s a bigger picture, it’s just a little more effort to look at! And if you weren’t involved with music, what do you think you’d be doing instead right now? Well, as mentioned above, I spend a lot of my time working with young people, mostly kids excluded from school, young offenders etc. This can be highly rewarding and fulfilling yet frustrating at the same time, but it’s something I love doing, passing on my knowledge and experience to the next generation. So I suppose teaching would suit me. You set up a DJ Collective at the start of your career, the OCP – would you recommend that collective way of starting out to younger DJs and producers?

Definitely, I think in your formative years you seek connections anyway and music is a great way to connect, so collectives tend to happen very naturally. Ours wasn’t a conscious decision, a ‘let's start a collective and be successful,’ it was more like we used to gather, play each other stuff, make stuff together and hang out. Then when one or two started to get record deals it inspired others and helped get attention for the crew as a whole. The catalyst for us was the record deal with Metalheadz (as Hidden Agenda). After that we all used to go down to the Metalheadz club at the Blue Note together, and 10-15 loud and highly excited Northern junglists knocking about in a London club gets you noticed, so lots of connections and further deals came out of that. How has 2013 been for you, stand out gigs/releases/memories? That’s a tricky one, as I broke my ankle quite badly back in June so have been out of action for the entire summer! I’m only just getting back into the swing of things after being on crutches for 5 months so I think my 2013 stand out moments are yet to come. I did do the Alpfresco snowboard event back in March that was pretty special: snowboarding all day the raving on the mountain in the

moonlight was pretty special. I’ve been asked to DJ there next year so massively looking forward to that! And what would be your ideal gig and setting? The one detailed above is pretty good, out in the mountains, in the moonlight... can be a bit chilly though! I also love the Garden festival in Croatia, whose three main stages are a beach bar, an open air club that stays going ‘til dawn and a Funktion One loaded party boat. I’ve been lucky enough to play on all three stages and it’s always an experience. And what should we expect from your show in Dubai on the 28th? Deep electronic house music with the odd left of centre curveball. Infusion Magazine Experience feat. Paddy Freeform, Thursday Nov 28, 360, 6pm-3am, free.

Having just celebrated its 2nd birthday, circus-themed club Cirque Le Soir shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. We spoke to the brand’s founder, Ryan Bish, about tequila dwarfes, Justin Bieber and why he views Nandos as his competition.

What’s the most shocking thing you’ve seen in one of your nightclubs? That, I’m afraid, can’t be published in any Dubai magazine.

And how do the UAE and UK clubs differ – are there any cultural changes? Well the whole sexy element has to be toned down, and completely tamed compared to what we can get away with in London. Also some of the more extreme acts and performers in London would not be received well in Dubai.

How far can you push the entertainment scene in the UAE? The concept needs tweaking, and just needs to adapt to the local market. We push it as far as we can.

How would you sum up your club’s concept? The weird and wonderful with a showering of Champagne, followed by a shot of Tequila served by a dwarf.

What would you say to detractors who’d argue that clubbing should just be kept simple: a dark box, with great tunes on a great sound system? Tell them to think outside the box, or better yet, stay in the dark box. Why would you possibly not want to make the experience something special, and be entertained at the same time, with great tunes on a great system. Helloooo?! The UK chain of CLS has had the who’s who of the pop scene in it, who was the best and worst behaved? Hmmm Justin Bieber was a bit naughty. Rihanna? Don’t mess with her. Will.I.Am is my man, and has supported us from day one.

And who do you view as your competition in Dubai? Nandos. There has been a huge growth in concept clubs in the UAE – can they all survive? Only the strong will survive. Personally I think the market’s now become saturated, and you will see new clubs opening and closing within very small timeframes. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the desert. And where else would you look to expand in the Middle East? Beirut. Definitely Beirut. Cirque Le Soir, Fairmont Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, 10.30pm3am, cirquelesoir.com/dubai

What better way to celebrate National Day than taking advantage of the long weekend and heading down to Nasimi on Monday Dec 2 to catch in-demand Swiss deep house duo Adriatique

Welcome to the city, what have you heard about Dubai? That it is still one of the fastest growing places in the world, where you can experience a lot of special things. You’re part of the Diynamic family, what does that mean to you? As you mentioned, family. That’s the thing, it’s kind of a family and that means a lot to anybody. You have a very melodic, easy sound – how much of your sets is made up of your own music? We do play a lot of our own stuff and also things we haven’t got plans to release. There’s a strong buzz around you at the moment, how are you going to sustain that hype? There is a lot to do for us, so we focus mainly on our work, which is the thing we love. Of course we feel that there is a lot going on around us, but to keep up the quality and make it a long term relationship, you have to stay grounded. You live and work with each other, what happens when an argument occurs, who wins? Hard to pick a winner. It’s pretty even but nobody wants to lose.

Where else have you travelled this year? And what are you anticipating from the Dubai show? We had an American tour and travelled all over Europe, and also went to Africa. We have heard a lot of good things about the party in Dubai, so we are very exited to play there and as we have 1-2 days off, we can have a look around. You had a big season in Ibiza, what was so special about the parties you played at Sankeys? We were there almost there every week. This year we got to open in Sankeys. We were there almost every week so we had different set times, which was quite interesting. The parties were big, they should be fun next year too. And what should we expect from your set in Dubai? A lot of new music. We are also gonna play quite a long set so we can really develop a journey on the night. We are really looking forward to it. Music News... Cracking tune

Acclaimed underground house DJ Steve Porter has created a bootleg track and video based around the crack cocaine confessions of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. Six months previously, Ford said ‘I do not use crack cocaine, nor am I an addict”, when challenged about media reports of a video purporting to show him smoking rocks from a crack pipe, though changed his tune this week after cops revealed they’d finally taken possession of the clip. “Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine,” he confessed, but denied he’d been lying when previous asked: “I wasn’t lying. You didn’t ask the correct questions’, while also insisting he has no plans to step down, despite being releaved of his duties. The shameless Canadian crack fiend was previously recognized in song by Peaches and Betti Forde who released a track in May called ‘Bored of Rob Ford’ just as the first allegations of his crack habit emerged. Chatting at the time, Betti Forde (no relation) said she’d been inspired to write the track ‘because Ford was such a unrepentant homophobe’.

Top of the pops

Yet more proof that dance music is taking over the world: Storm Queen, AKA Morgan Geist, one half of Metro Area, has just hit the UK Top spot with his ‘Look Right Through’ track. Already a huge underground house music hit during the year, its official release has rocketed to the top of the charts, putting him in good electronic company with Disclosure, Breach, Rudimental and Duke Dumont all having Number 1s this year.

Look and Listen North Korea jumps on the party bus

There are several ways to get noticed, but two American rappers have taken the unusual route of attempting to jump-start their career by performing in North Korea. Both Pacman and Peso have barely travelled beyond their home city of Washington DC, but after raising $10,000 on Kickstarter, the unsigned hip hop duo will fly to China and then Pyongyang in North Korea and perform tracks like ‘God Bless America’ on their own party bus. Comparisons could be drawn with larger than life ex basketball star Dennis Rodman, who’s struck up an unlikely alliance with North Korea leader Kim Jong-un. When asked about the trip, Peso half joked that “If we don’t die, it will probably be a big life-changer.” EMD tour to Saudi Arabia anyone?

Rant and rave

‘Leave Them All Behind’ underground London legend Whitey called for a public discussion about TV production companies ‘abusing musicians’ this week after a Facebook post went viral in which he complained about a top UK company asking him to license a track to them for free. He accused production company Betty and TV people in general of ‘fleecing’ musicians whenever possible’ due to a ‘culturally ingrained disdain for musicians. “I am sick to death of your hollow shtick, of the inevitable line ‘Unfortunately there’s no budget for music’ as is some fixed Law of the Universe’ handed you down a sad but immutable financial verdict preventing you from budgeting to pay for music,” he complained. YOUR company set the budget. So YOU have chosen to allocate no money for music. I get begging letters like this every week- from a booming, affluent global media industry.” “This music is my hard-earned property,” he continued, “Would you walk into someone’s home, eat from their bowl, and walk out smiling, saying “So sorry, I’ve no budget for food”?

Album Reviews... Moe Shafiq – Greasy EP (Infusion Records) House/Deep House



I

infusion.ae

The UAE isn’t always the perfect breeding ground for aspiring producers and DJs – just compare it with the UK, where clubbing is a way of life for teenagers. Disclosure, one half of which are still in their teens, are currently the hottest property in the house market, which goes to show youth has a lot to offer. Which makes the Infusion Records debut of Abu Dhabi producer Moe Shafiq all the sweeter, as at 21, he’s only just legally cleared to step foot in night clubs here. Producing for the last 4 years and with Orbital’s ‘Halycon’ as his original inspiration, he’s now created a 2 track deep house EP that at once sounds current and classic. ‘Don’t Stop’ is a propulsive slice of melodic goodness, with half-heard vocals, luscious pads and stabs and busy percussion. Flip side ‘Catastrophe’ is a more focused, bass-fronted track, with a growling breakdown, build and drop, making it the sort of track you could imagine Maceo Plex dropping to good effect.

RECORDS 009

Arcade Fire – Reflektor Indie/Rock

I

arcadefire.com



It should have been a dream team: off-kilter indie stars Arcade Fire sign up LCD Soundsystem frontman and DFA Records founder James Murphy to produce their new album. And on the opening track, ‘Reflektor’, a rhino-charging, 7 minute stomp of indie-disco perfection with glowing dance music builds and Bowie on back up duties, it works a treat. ‘Joan of Arc’ and ‘Afterlife’ also show Murphy’s touches, as big cresendoing arcs of music clash and collide, with typical Arcade Fire harmonies bouncing over the top. But all too often on the 4th album from the Montreal husband and wife team, the tracks feel like half-finished sketches that Murphy has been asked to clean up and refine. And maybe that was the point, to create an album that takes chances, that’s full of musical glitches and doesn’t have the refined polish of previous album The Suburbs. But on tracks like ‘Here Comes The Night Time,’ ‘Normal Person’ and ‘It’s Never Over,’ it simply feels like a collage of Roxy Music inspired ideas stapled together. While the album does improve with repeated listens, most of the tracks weigh in at well over 6 minutes, meaning there are a lot of unfinished symphonies here.

Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Atjazz & Julian Gomes – The Gift The Curse House/Electronic atjazz.co.uk

For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae



If dance music is getting increasingly homogenized – and the rise of the deep house and EDM pop cultures suggests it is – then Atjazz is the antihero, a dance music producer and record label looking to keep house music fresh and original. And on the third Atjazz album, main man Martin Iveson has brought on South African house hero Julian Gomes for their freeform, live-sounding collaboration. He’s not the only collaborator as Robert Owens and Osunlade also lend their pipes alongside several others, giving this 10 track album a real emotional core. Musically, it’s a very organic album, with soul and stripped back funk at the core, while tracks like ‘Overshadowed’ and ‘White Rose’ do venture into techier territory. But with tracks like ‘Agbara,’ an African vocal work out, and deep house opener ‘Poor Man’ balancing out the darker beats, there’s a real musical spectrum on The Gift The Curse, an album filled with sunshine and moonlight.

MEET YOUR PROMOTER Miss the spirit of iBO, Trilogy and Alpha? Then you clearly haven’t been one of the hundreds who gather every week at the back to basics electronic alter of Analog Room, the underground Thursday party at The Q in Barsha, delivering leftfield electronic goodness. We sat down with one of the main promoters and resident DJs, Mehdi Ansari to find out more.

– Analog Room Need to know Running since: 2012 Run by: Mehdi Ansari, Salar Ansari, Siamak Amidi Artists played: Move D, DJ Deep, A Guy Called Gerald, Dasha Rush, Sierra Sam, Guillaume and the Coutu Dumonts, Matthew Styles and more Local Residents: Mehdi, Salar, Siamak Amidi, Naswrawi, Shadi Megallaa Venues worked at: The Q Underground, Holiday Inn, Barsha

Who are you and what do you do?

Mehdi Ansari, Audio Engineer, Music Producer, Analog Room.

What events do you currently run?

At the moment, only Analog Room. I am not a regular Event Promoter. I always knew that someone had to come and run a party that everybody is talking about, but does not yet exist in Dubai. One day I woke up and knew that I have to do it and it was time. So I spoke with the people who I believe in and the game started from there. A party that happens for the music and not money.

or a passion? You need to believe in what you are doing. Then you need the knowledge of what you are planning to do. Having the right people in and targeting the right audience the right way (marketing). Keep it on the same concept and do not let time, money and success make changes. Like this, you are good to go as long as there is need for your service!

What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made?

There are mistakes but nothing that big that I could call it the biggest. We had some bookings at the wrong time which could have happened What’s the key ingredient at a different time and make a to building a good brand better impact in the city. I call them Burnt Artists and they will and promoting? First you need to know what do be back for sure to do what you want to do. Is it a business they were supposed to do.

And the biggest success? Having Analog Room where it is today and seeing all these people appreciate this music.

Do promoters in Dubai take enough risks?

In Dubai, the target of the events are pretty clear; giving people what they can 100% accept and of course it works, because there is no challenge. There is no movement. I can tell you in a different way: how can bringing Madonna, Jay Z, David Guetta, Eagles, Sasha or Metallica be risky? There are times that some people bring really good artists to the city but as 99.9% of the venues are in hotels, it is not easy to find a venue that suits their artist’s concept. So what happens is that they have to take a big risk of having a real artist in such a commercial venue. It burns the artist, it bores the commercial audience and it is bad for the reputation of the city as artists will go back and talk about that certain club as the whole country’s music scene.

What’s been the most outlandish/odd thing you’ve seen on an artist rider? They are mostly pretty regular except one or two. Fred P asked for a 4 Band Bozak Isolator which I have never seen anyone asking for it, and A guy Called Gerald who only asked for a TR-909, TR-707,

TR- 606, SH-101 and an analogue mixing consul.

And any nightmare acts you’ve had to deal with?

Never. As I believe, people who play good music cannot be too hard. There were some issues with flights maybe but nothing like nightmare.

What’s the best venue you’ve worked at?

So far I have worked only on Analog Room and for sure the answer is The Q Underground.

How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right? The idea behind this question is coming from a wrong phenomenon

called Dubai Music Industry. My crowd know what Analog Room is. We bring hot underground acts that the city has not seen before. We want people to learn and hear the music that the rest of the world adores and 99% of Dubai never heard it. The music that has been made for the love of music and the beauty of it, not for making money (POP). We had acts who were way too experimental for the Dubai scene, but we wanted people to see what’s up in the world and experience it. Sometimes some of my artists are really nervous about impressing the crowd as they have never been to the Middle East and my answer to them always is; please play your music. I want them to hear you, not you follow them. I want this music industry to get educated and inspired about the exciting underground music that is happening around the globe. Analog Room is not about business so whenever people think it is not good anymore, I am done with my duty.

Who would you most like to bring out to the region?

This story never ends and please let me keep this one as a surprise. Analog Room, every Thursday The Q Underground, 10pm3am, Dhs75. facebook.com/analogroomdxb

Soundstage

Shaya A high concept club involving live entertainment and flower throwing, Fleurs also have a high powered line up including new resident singer Shaya‌

It sounds like a very fresh concept – can you sum up what happens in a sentence? Actually it is a very unique concept! Live stage clubbing with flower throwing in a building that looks like a flower. What sort of music can we expect to hear? Western current hits plus oldies but goldies, with a touch of Arabesque pop and Mediterranean music. There are five singers including me, supported by a hot band. Congratulations on your single ‘Turn It Up’, how did that come about and what has the reaction been like? It’s going quite well, it’s great when people come up to me and tell me how much they appreciate my songs! You’ve done a lot of travelling and singing work before, have you seen anything similar to this venue? I have travelled and toured the world, but I have not come across a venue so unique before. It is a gem for the nightlife of Dubai. You’ve got a very interesting background, as you’re Danish and South American and lived in Greece for a long time. Do you feel at home in the expat culture of Dubai? I am new here, so I don’t feel at home yet, something that I hope will happen very soon. And how will you overcome that multi cultural nature when you’re performing live? I have been performing in front of multi-cultural audiences all my life, so hopefully it will be easy to do it in Dubai. You’ve shared the stage with David Guetta before, any other big names or cool acts you’ve performed with? Apart from David Guetta I have also shared the stage with Anise K and many more European big names. Fleurs, Radisson Royal Hotel, Sheikh Zayed Road, 11pm-3am, fleursclub.com

DJ Booth: Nasrawi

Analog Room resident Nasrawi is one of the most forward thinking and rewarding DJs out there, and also has a little bit of a thing for Chicken Wings‌

One thing you might not know about me is… I have no country. My worst ever job was… Toilet duty at a cinema complex. Some patrons are just nasty. My favorite ever record is... D’angelo - The Roots. DJing is much like... Knob fiddling. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Like a pubescent boy on steroids, very young and strong. I’m really proud of... My amazing family. What track could you drop in every set? Currently it’s Janet Jackson – ‘If (Kaytranada Live Set Remix)’, that snare! I can’t live without... Ma bwaybee. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Man, every booking I get is an achievement. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Besides the obvious, I’d say chicken wings. Man, nothing’s better than a perfectly cooked chicken wing. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... Right here, right now. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Karina and Dana Ruh. Those girls know how to vibe off each other in the booth. I’m not a politician but… I suffer the consequences. We all do. soundcloud.com/nasrawi

Weird News... Face is your fortune

A Chinese man has successfully sued his wife for giving birth to what he called ‘an incredibly ugly girl.’ Initially, Jian Feng accused his wife of cheating on him, as he could never be the father of such an ‘unattractive child’ but DNA tests proved it to be us. It was then revealed that his wife had had extensive cosmetic surgery before they met. “I married my wife out of love, but as soon as we had our first daughter, we began having marital issues,” he told the Irish Times. “Our daughter was incredibly ugly, to the point where it horrified me,” he said. Feng sued his wife on grounds of false pretenses, for not telling him the truth about the plastic surgery, and duping him into believing that she was beautiful. A judge agreed with Feng’s argument and ordered his wife to fork over $120,000.

WEIRD BITES “The battle between the drug gangs and the police is a woefully uneven one in terms of resources. In an age of austerity, some police drug teams have been told to avoid late afternoon arrests, because they cannot afford the lengthy overtime involved.” Drug experts Max Daly and Steve Simpson admit they were surprised to learn that ‘In some parts of the country police have been told to avoid arresting dealers after 3pm’.

Llama drama We’ve all been there, a bit drunk on a night out and ended up with a traffic cone in our bed. But one group of drinkers in Bordeaux went that one step further, and stole a circus Llama called Serge just before dawn, before taking him around town, and even on the city’s metro before leaving him tied to a lamppost, where he was later returned unharmed to his circus. The group also stole a stuffed lion and trombone, and now face prosecution from the local authorities. Anyone fancy taking the camel challenge in Dubai? Thought not…
