It’s times like these, that you realize that you live in a pretty cool city (and that you’ve got a pretty great job). Our new issue has interviews with Paul Van Dyk, the low down on the Warehouse rave at Media One and RedFest, a profile of our new favourite urban night and a brand new column from a man with a lot to say, David Newsum. Plus we take a look at the 5 best Rolling Stones remixes ahead of their Abu Dhabi gig. That’s a whole lotta fun to pack into 2 weeks, and it gives me one of those nice work headaches deciding just what goes into our 100 pages each issue. We think we managed to get pretty much everything in, so enjoy the issue and see you in a couple of weeks. Andy

What we did
Aquarius Heaven @ Electric Days
Everyone has different strategies when it comes to packing out parties. Electric Days have opted to make things a bit more challenging for the average clubber to ensure the right crowd, as they vet potential customers following an introductory email and FB profile link. And making them work hard for their party works, as they had to narrow down 1000 submissions for their 350 capacity event at Tamanya Terrace. Predictably, people were queuing out of the lifts from 8pm, with the rooftop bar sardine-packed from 9.30pm, with deep, tech and garage laced house thrown down on the warm up, as well as a few classics (notably ‘The Man With The Red Face’). Berlin-based headliner Aquarius Heaven didn’t disappoint, flying in direct from Mexico where he’d been playing the BPM festival. Dropping a live Ableton set, he used his previous skills as a hip hop MC to keep the crowd involved. By the end of the night, there were definitely a few noses put out of joint by the strict door policy, but there were far more singing the praises on the communal love in that had become the dancefloor.

Boutiq Lounge Launch Party We often get invitations for the newest venue this and the relaunch night that and sometimes, so we can be a pretty skeptical lot. Boutiq Lounge was a pleasant surprise. Built on the old Republique site, Boutiq now boasts a brand new layout that feels both spacious and intimate at the same time. It now has a fantastic sound system that filled the club and its cavernous sky-high ceilings but still allowed us to have a decent chat without resorting to sign language. The friendly hostesses and attentive bar staff also added to the coolness of the venue, with no pretentious ‘we don’t like your face so you can’t come in’ attitude from their team. They’ve kept the gallery style VIP section above the main dance floor but opted for a sleaker minimal look with fitted booths. The smaller 2nd room has a nice relaxed vibe to it, so for those nights when you had one too many ‘twerks’ on the main dance floor you can take it down a notch upstairs. The only thing we didn’t like was the hanging DJ booth above the crowd which restricts that all important DJ/audience interaction that all DJs love to see, but that aside Boutiq is a very welcome addition to the nightcub scene.

Working it
Working in an office is dull at the best of times (obviously not at Infusion Towers, we have a set of decks in the office), so here are some quips to keep the banter level high… 1. Social notworking - messing around on Facebook and Twitter to avoid doing work 2. Deja brew - offering to make someone a cup of tea when you know for a fact they’ve just had one in the hope they will decline 3. Blue sky drinking - an unlimited free bar at a work party

Looking Forward Rumours
Jamie Jones is lined up to hit the UAE for an al fresco gig before the start of summer. Lionel Richie has been confirmed for a concert at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre in March. We’ve heard on the grapevine that Loco Dice is to play Blue Marlin before the end of the summer. Eats Everything has been confirmed for his Dubai debut on March 7th.
Nice one Pacha resident Pierre Ravan for scouring the local labels and producers for his new Pacha CD.
Pitbull has been given the official World Cup song for Brazil 2014. Another World Cup ruined by a s*** song.
Well done to the Dubai Jazz Fest organisers who, quickly replaced The Stone Temple Pilots after they cancelled their up-coming tour. We're not entirely sure that Earth Wind and Fire are quite what rock fans had in mind however, even if the opening night on February 13 is now a free event.
We've dobbed the Blackout promoters into the Angry Monkey, after they were happy to use a photo of a monkey being offered a drink at their club as promo until someone rightly pointed out it was animal cruelty, and started a Facebook campaign.
Great to see the next wave of DJs take over Dubai, as our DJ Breakthrough award winners Loose Goose, Shy Aynetchi and Elaoud dropped killer sets at 360 just recently.
A big boo to the bouncer at a certain Welsh-themed boozer, who aggressively ripped the cap off our head despite being on our way out and having been there for 2 hours with no problems. Stick your dress code where the sun don't shine, sunshine.
With Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE bringing out Cadenza DJs Argy and Ernesto Ferreyra for a label showcase on February 21, we take an in-depth look at one of the most prominent record labels around.
ca·den·za (kə-dĕn′zə) n.
Deeper
1. An elaborate, ornamental melodic flourish interpolated into an aria or other vocal piece. 2. An extended virtuosic section for the soloist usually near the end of a movement of a concerto. The best record labels tell a story, they function for more than just music and create a family environment where creativity grows and evolves. Whether it’s the global commercialization of Ministry of Sound, the deep-rooted soul/funk sound that Defected continue to mine, or the strict techno values pushed by Soma Records, there are countless labels out there that mean more than just a banging 4/4 beat. And one of the most recent deep and meaningful labels is Cadenza. As the name suggests, they put a lot of thought into the process, their deep, twisted tech sound neatly summed up by the dictionary definition above. Head
Underground
to their website and you’ll find their own definition of what they do: not for them the self aggrandizing promo and chest beating boasting, they sum up their ethos like this… Cadenza is a space for music to grow, rise and blossom. It is an accessible platform created to receive new people, projects and their influences. By continously searching and
progressing, we are a part of the evolution. We are all spiritual people, free as our music, and we live for that reason. The big feather in their label’s cap is Luciano, the Swiss-Chilean DJ and producer who also runs Vagabundos, one of Ibiza’s hottest parties for the last few seasons. The label can also boast tech-heavy hitters like Lee Van Dowski and
Michael Cleis, but the label’s great quality lies in its consistency, with both Argy and Ernesto following the label’s template. Ernesto’s music is defined as a mix of Latin groove and taut Northern minimalism: “I love jazz, soul, funk, Cuban rhythms, rivers, mountains… crazy movies like Tim Burton, history books – everything is an inspiration!” And with a residency at Ushuaia under his belt, and a debut album that won praise from around the world, is only on the up. Berlin-based Argy meanwhile also follows the loose-limbed Cadenza template, able to flit from classic techno to deep disco at the drop of a hat, while also releasing a range of music on his These Days label. Not only one of the biggest DJs of his generation, German trance/electronic don Paul Van Dyk is also one of the most forthcoming. In our latest interview with him ahead of his Zero Gravity date in February, we get to grips with his 3rd album, why EDM is ‘cheesy’ and the changing role of the DJ over the last few decades…
Welcome back to the city – you’ve always been very well received here. Does that surprise you when you play in the same place once or twice in the same year? It depends entirely upon the place, but generally speaking, no it doesn’t really surprise me. It is always a big experience here, and the recent shows here were amazing with a very passionate crowd. You’ve played as the main headliner out here, and also as part of a larger festival bill – which do you prefer? Each provides an experience that, if not entirely different, then certainly with its own unique qualities. In clubs I am much closer to the audience and by that nature, there is a much closer and more intimate level of interaction. I love that. At festivals the audiences are bigger, so the music you’re playing has much further reach, which of course is a big positive too. Not to forget the growing level of stage production in regards of lights, visuals and special effects. At the bigger festivals, there has been a huge development in this sense during the last years. I think it’s safe to say I like them both equally, but for differing reasons.
Paul Va
How was 2013 for you, what were the highs and lows? So, so many. The tours, the singles, the release of (R)evolution, the return of the We Are One Festival, Peace One Day in The Hague, PvD Meets Verdi in Munich, Ibiza (of course!) and all its other amazing contributing parts, 2013 was one big long run of highlights. So much so in fact that any lows seem inconsequential when compared. I invite everybody to have a look at PvD TV on my Youtube channel there are some nice clips about my recent touring.
an Dyk
And what are you most looking forward to in 2014? Oh, without doubt my new album. In 2005 I put out my second Politics of Dancing mix-compilation. At a certain point fans began to tell me that they felt that it was unfinished PvD business - that there was never the natural progression or conclusion to its story. So I’ve been addressing that in the studio over the last 12 or so months. I’m giving ‘POD’ a new role though - moving it from being wholly a mixcompilation to far more of an artist album. Albeit one that will play like a mix-comp, in a fluid, building manner. Germany really does seem to be the hub for dance music producers – why do you think the country is so strong in that region? I believe that’s down to its exceptionally long, strong history of electronic dance music here. Germany was a very early adopter – it embraced it right from the word go. The earlier the seed is planted, the more embedded it is and the greater a part of the culture it becomes. How has the American adoption of EDM helped or hindered your career? Have you adapted your sound?
Electronic music started as a small subculture and developed into the biggest, most enduring music culture in the world. What is now widely called “EDM” has in my opinion not much to do with the ‘electronic music world’. Our music is about trying something new; it is about being creative and breaking boundries. “EDM” is a repetition of the same sound effect over and over, on a rather cheesy level. Electronic music is about having fun as much as it is to keep the quality. This is the responsibility of a DJ at the end of the day. There is so much great music out there, and so many amazingly talented DJs and producers who will survive once the EDM hype is over. As such, I’d say EDM has neither helped nor hindered. In your 20 year long career, the DJ has become a huge star, when before it might have been more about specific parties or promoters. Do you think this is a positive change? To me it’s not much different to how it was before the transformation of the DJ occurred. Then it was the bands and the venue names that were the stars. Now it’s the DJs and the clubs or festivals names that are famous and draw crowds.
And what can we expect when you play in Dubai in February? 2014 will be a new ‘album year’ for me (with ‘The Politics of Dancing 3’), so there will be new music premiered and everyone will experience exclusive content through my performance. The equipment I use (keyboards/ computer/controller etc) enables me to play live, in a very responsive, interactive fashion, in concert with the audience. I’ll be playing some of my older tracks too of course.
Paul Van Dyk, Thursday February 27, Zero Gravity, Skydive Dubai, 6pm-3am, Dhs180 advance, Dhs250 on the door.
A new series of Warehouse parties are being thrown in Media One’s Level 41, and French ghetto house duo, Amine Edge and Dance are the first headliners, alongside BBC Radio 1’s Mistajam. We caught up with Amine Edge ahead of their February 21st date in Dubai. Welcome to Dubai, you’ve been here before — what were your thoughts on the place? Dubai is amazing, the weather is good, I have some good friends DJs and producer from Marseille there (The Beatanger). I love spending time in the city, and the restaurants are all amazing, foooood! We’ve heard that Amine Edge wasn’t your first DJ name, what was it before? From when I was DJing professionally it was my first DJ name, but when I was younger I had 2 different names and I will die with this secret, haha. We’ve heard you have an eye for the ladies, what did you make of your visit to Dubai? Of course I love girls, who doesn’t? I don’t have an official girl in Dubai that I
see when I come here, but I met a very cool one last time that I would really love to spend time with when I come back. I’m also gonna see my friends, have some good dinner, I’m gonna visit the Burj Khalifa because I never had time to do it and for sure some quad in the desert, it’s like a ritual for me. What was the first track you bought? “CJ Bolland - Sugar Is Sweeter” in 1996, I was 13 years old. The remix of Armand Van Helden is still played in every club in the world, he was a big influence for me. And what do you remember about your first gig? I remember that my hands were trembling, I was scared and stressy, I was only 16 and had played home for only 3 years, it was the first time with people around, I was scared.
How do your sets when when you DJ together? I have no idea, but the energy of us together behind the decks is different than alone, we have a lot of fun.
used to listen when we were kids, I’ve never been really into Justice, I was more into progressive house, but the sound of Justice is amazing and very complex to make.
How influenced are you by other French acts like Daft Punk and Justice? Daft Punk’s album Homework was a big influence in my childhood, what a sick album. I miss the Daft Punk from the first album, like many people, but it’s evolution you know, no one does what they did almost 20 years before, I have big respect for them. Justice came late and you know we all are more influenced by what we
And what can the warehouse rave in Dubai expect from your set? You can expect to listen a very fresh and new set with some classics from us that you already know, we will surprise you guys! Amine Edge + Dance, Mistajam, Friday February 21, Level 41, Media One Hotel, 9pm-3am, Dhs100 tickets advance.

urban night… There’s no shortage of good hip hop and RnB nights in Dubai, but the latest to impress is 2Liv’s urban weekender, with DJs Shef Codes, Skinnloop, Ejaz and Alex Seda working up a dancefloor storm underneath the massive LED lighting system. Haven’t been yet? Then check out some of the dancefloor action and what the DJs have been playing and saying about the venue…

Meek Mill – Make Me 2LIV Thursday’s is one of the best events of the week in my opinion because of the variety of people that attend. I think people should definitely come check it out if you’re looking for a venue that will satisfy your craving for a good atmosphere, good music, and overall a damn good time.

Careers advice
We’ve all be there; nearing the end of your mandatory schooling when the careers advisor (who clearly hates their own job) comes to your school and tells you what you should be doing for the next 40 years of your life. You go through a series of questions that you’d always lie too and hope they’d suggest something cool like being fireman, astronaut, spy or Snoop Dogg’s roller-in-chief. Invariably you’re told the best in life you can hope for is something that involves a grey suit and maybe a Honda Civic. Or, as most of my friends were told, that the only useful thing they’ll be in life is an organ doner at the end of it.
But, is there an alternative to a life spent wearing your grey suit, driving your Honda Civic, going home to your overweight 4/10 wife where you proceed to drink yourself into a world where she’s a 6/10 and you drive a Porsche? Well there just jolly well might be! Have you ever thought about becoming a DJ? DJing is a relatively new career phenomenon. 30 years ago DJs wore nylon tracksuits and were shoehorned behind the decks in a corner of your local boozer. They’d have the vocal prowess on the mic of a dying goldfish talking through a shoe. You were never sure if they’d just announced the buffet was open or if someone could make way for the ambulance that had come to rescue people from the pungent smell being released from his armpits during the last rendition of “The Birdy Song”. DJing was about as cool as a nasty case of genital warts.
Suddenly though, in the early 90s, the DJ became cool. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this happened when the crowds started wearing boiler suits and licking windows in clubs. No one thought it possible but this nylon tracksuit wearing, incoherent drunk was now the relatively well dressed, sober(ish) clever person in a club. The world had upped its chemical intake and the DJ was propelled to stardom. And this brings me onto my point, rather than wearing that grey suit for the rest of your life, should you become a DJ and can you do this in Dubai? Can you become the next Steve Aoki chucking cake at fat kids in the crowd in Dubai? In a word, no.
The DJ industry is more competitive than ever, playing good music is simply not good enough anymore; it’s a given. You need to be making music, doing your social media, promoting your gigs, writing press releases, the list goes on. It’s no coincidence that most top DJs are boring skinny uber geeks who sit in front of computers all day working (probably wearing grey suits). Yes, you can do all this from Dubai but there is one thing that’s key to a DJs success that you can’t have. You have to be out touring, building up your name and this is where the dream of being a DJ dies in Dubai. The region is simply not big enough to do this. If you want to be a famous DJ move to Europe or America where your starting $300 a night DJ fee can get you from London to Paris to Berlin and still give you enough change for a McDonalds. My advice though would be to forget all this, listen to your careers advisor, go get that grey suit and look on the bright side... I hear Pierre Cardin have a 75% sale on!
Like the Mona Lisa, dead people and David Guest’s face, there are some things that shouldn’t be touched. And there are some people that think The Rolling Stones back catalogue is one of those. We don’t, so we trawled the internets to find the 5 best remixes and edits of their tracks to get you in the mood for their February 21 date… You Can’t Always Get What You Want – Soulwax remix Punchy, electronic re-take of the classic 7 minute long choir abetted classic that carefully adds to the Stones legacy. The Satisfaction Skank – Fatboy Slim Party-starting 90s big beat mashup that puts one of the best basslines of all time on top of Fatboy’s ‘Rockafeller Skank.’ Cheesy, but so much fun.
Sympathy For The Devil – Neptunes Remix While the Fatboy Slim remix might be the go-to track for many, this Neptunes version takes things down a notch, with an Indian hip hop vibe permeating through out making it a more laidback affair. Greg Wilson – Two Sides of Sympathy Disco legend Wilson took two separate edits – Amerie’s ‘One Thing’ over ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ and the same vocals on top of Massive Attack’s ‘Unfinished Sympathy’ – and combined them into one masterful edit. The end result is this mega mashup, that keeps you smiling from start to ‘Sympathy For The Devil’
guitar solo finish. Free download: soundcloud.com/gregwilson/ edit-the-edit-two-sides-of Miss You – D! D! D! Music News... Daft Fun
Behind the scenes footage of Daft Punk’s Grammy show, where their mixing console was based on a set design from Alien, have been released. And, according to the designer, it actually worked on the night, making it a fully live show. When you’ve got millions in the bank, why not create a bespoke mixing desk recreated from Alien. We’re still not sure what Pharell’s hat was all about though…
Hollaphonic release Fabric
The Hollaphonic duo continue their hot streak as they’ve just released their latest single, ‘Fabric’ feat. Kevin Murphy on vocals. Following on from their previous releases, this is a slickly produced slice of EDM pop, with a clever half time beat building up to the climax. Big ups!
New Pioneer Serato mixer released
With 3 Serato controllers already under their belt, Pioneer have just released their flagship model, the DDJ-SZ, a fully professional unit that offers the same build quality and features as the CDJ-2000NXS and comes with 2 sound cards and a host of new features. The top of the line model completes their series, with (in price order) the DDJ-SB and DDJ-SR and the DDJ-SX completing the series. pioneer-mea.com.

Album Reviews... Amine Edge & Dance – CUFF Volume 1 House/Electro soundcloud.com/amine-edge
Amine Edge and Dance don’t mess about. When it comes to their sets, you know you’re in the middle of a high energy whirlwind: all ghetto bass, hip hop vocals and beats that are so punchy, you’ll need an ice pack. And the debut compilation for their new label, CUFF, follows exactly the same path, as they’ve pulled together 10 producers who follow their musical remit. Some of the selections are a little too flat and derivative to stand out, but when they do – like on Tough Love’s ‘The Fun Train To Reno’ and Flex B’s ‘Baby I’m Boss’ – then you have some heavy hitting artillery at your disposal. Well worth checking out.

Mogwai – Rave Tapes Indie
I
mogwai.co.uk
Funny how age mellows you. A decade or so ago, Mogwai were proudly wearing ‘Blur Are C****’ t-shirts to their gigs, turning their post-rock racket up to 11 and getting high by sticking vodka soaked tampons where the sun don’t shine. Now, with their 8th album, they’ve finely tuned their dynamic, loud-soft sound, and expanded their electronic armoury. And the results are beautiful. Creeping up on you like a sonic glacier, each track escalates the mood, the still present sonic squalls smoothed out by harmonious piano lines and fizzing synths. ‘Mastercard’ is as rocky as the Scottish group get, while the other 9 tracks could easily be outros to a post-apocalyptic film, all washed out anger and soothing melodies. Age really does become them.

Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Pierre Ravan – KaRavan
House/Tech House pierreravan.com
For more Album Reviews go to www.infusion.ae
Trends may come and go, but one constant in Dubai is Pierre Ravan and his brand of music. Billed as ‘global grooves and spiritual house’ on the front of this, his eighth compilation, this double CD ably lives up to the hype. Disc one, titled Dawn, is firmly on the jazzy and soulful tip, with cuts from Jazzanova and Ralf Gum the highlights. With congo drums, freeform percussion and muted sunshine melodies to the fore across the 13 tracks, it sounds like the perfect dawn wake up (although in the interests of journalistic honesty, we didn’t last until 6am – must try harder next time!) Disc two meanwhile is the Dusk soundtrack, and is slightly techier, slightly tougher and bouncier with tracks from Una, Chus & Ceballos and Jordan Peak in the mix. And, as with CD 1, and indeed all of the KaRavan series, there’s a solid consistency in the mixing and track selection, with no concessions for deep house or tech house trends. Just Pierre doing his thing, yet again.

Travel to any of the best clubs in the world, and you’ll physically feel the full force of the bass. Stand in Fabric’s Room 1 or at Berlin’s Panorama Bar and your body will pulse and vibrate in time. It physically moves you, which is what good music should do. So it makes sense for headphone producers to push that side of the sound, and it’s something that Skullcandy have latched onto with their latest round of headphones. With a flexible black plastic band holding together two angular but powerful cans, there’s a graded bass slider on the left headphone which lets you physically alter the amount of bass you can hear, and feel, courtesy of the individually powered second driver. It takes one AA battery to power it, but it’s cunningly hidden away and ours is still going strong after a month of use. It only really makes a difference when the volume is up towards the maximum end, but even with the slider at halfway or below, the bass – and the mids and the trebles – are balanced and punchy. And with a removable inline remote and microphone cable, it’s nicely versatile.
Personally, the bulky styling isn’t quite for us, but they provide a solid sound that will get bassheads grinning from vibrating ear to vibrating ear. Dhs449, available from major retailers across the UAE. skullcandy.com/crusher
DJ Booth: Sarah Lawrence One of our favourite female Djs, Sarah can boast residencies across 3 different venues in Dubai, not to mention several gigs for the Infusion events crew‌
One thing you might not know about me is… I used to be a professional basketball player. My worst ever job was… Standing in a supermarket offering customers samples of smoked ham. My favorite ever record is… DeMarzo - Flip The Mattress. DJing is much like… Playing one track and then another, or frequently “mixing” them, as I’ve heard is all the rage these days. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… 10 years behind. I’m really proud of… My wallet when she’s been fed. I can’t live without… Free hotel room slippers. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Playing in Ibiza. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Kettle Sweet Chilli Chips. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… The 70s! If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… Amine Edge. I’m not a politician but… Japan needs to stop harvesting dolphins. soundcloud.com/djsarahlawrence/casa-de-pascal www.facebook.com/clubbeats
MEET YOUR PROMOTER With 6 years under their belt, and with showcase parties for Circo Loco and Cadenza, not to mention recent gigs featuring Tiefshwarz and James Zabiela, Plus Minus are one of our favourite house brand that have worked at some of the city’s finest venues…
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Adrian, I’m from the beautiful island of Malta with enough education about house music, and I’m the founder of Plus Minus Sessions.
What events do you currently run?
I currently do Plus Minus Sessions at Nasimi Beach and Machu Warriors at Story Roof Top Lounge with my business partners Louise and Karim.
to building a good brand and promoting? The key ingredient is to keep my self updated within
– Plus Minus Sessions Need to know Running since: 2007 Run by: Adrian Grech & partners Louise and Karim Artists played: Phil Keiran, Adam Kroll, Shoody Lynn, Ralf Kollman, Pawas, Karotte Local Residents: Sam Farsio, Markii, Haidz, Rishi, Miss P.M, Daylomar, Danilo Dumonte, Gabriel Floriani Venues worked at: Nasimi Beach, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, Trilogy, Dek on 8 at Media One Hotel, Amika, Submarine the music scene, attend international festivals and clubs around the world, read blogs about music, labels and be persistent in what I’m doing.
What’s been the biggest mistake you’ve made? Mistake in my vocabulary doesn’t exist haha. I wish, it does exist.
The biggest mistake was when I didn’t consider the nationality of an international artist and he had no visa, so he couldn’t board the aircraft to come for the gig. I had to put a guarantee for him to be able to fly in for the gig and to purchase him another flight.
And the biggest success?
I had a few big successes such as Circoloco and the Cadenza Showcase in the past and the great artists that we brought last year for Plus Minus Sessions and more to come this year. But the biggest success that I have had so far is that Plus Minus Sessions has been running for more than 6 years here in Dubai and we started off with people like Raxon as our resident DJ.
Do promoters in Dubai take enough risks? Yes they do, it’s Dubai and every promoter has to risk. If you don’t risk you don’t succeed.
What’s been the most outlandish/odd thing you’ve seen on an artist rider?
using a fan. The Nano Pad didn’t work but at least James Zabiela managed to perform at his very best.
What’s the best venue you’ve worked at?
The best venue I’ve worked at was an old porn cinema in the capital city of Malta, Valletta, from the 60s where I managed to set up an illegal party there with some cool original movies and cool underground music, that was epic. Otherwise the best venue I’ve worked at in Dubai is Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE and second best is Nasimi Beach.
How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right?
To be honest there haven’t been many odd things on an artist rider, apart from one of the artists that specifically asked for fresh coconut juice.
I guess by experience and challenges I learn to balance what I like and what the crowd wants to see and hear. I always take into consideration people’s feedback. Most of the times we’ve been right and not wrong.
Not really apart from last October when we had James Zabiela performing at Nasimi and it was really hot. His Mac Book Pro and his Nano Pad stopped working half way through the act because of the humidity. After a while we manged to swipe everything and cool the equipment by
You’ve brought out a lot of bold bookings like Adriatique to the region, very hot, up and coming talents. How do you decide who to bring, who else is on your radar?
And any nightmare acts you’ve had to deal with?
I do love my music and I dig hard before booking somebody, I don’t just go and book an act
unless I know that they are suitable for my crowd. We have some great acts coming up including Ryan Crosson (Visionquest) on the 20th February, Henrik Schwarz (Live) and many other great artists.
Who would you most like to bring out to the region?
I’d really love to bring Richie Hawtin.
Pro mo ters I ad mire: I do admire Glastonbury, in fact I’ve been there for the last 7 years. I get lots of inspiration there. Plus Minus Session feat. Ryan Crosson (Visonquest) Thursday February 20, Nasimi, 6pm3am.

Weird News... Hammerheaded
A New Zealand man that survived a shark attack, stitched up his own wound before heading to the pub, and finally the hospital. James Grant, a 24 year old junior Dr, was spearfishing in murky water 2m deep when he felt something attack his leg. Using his knife, he managed to fight the shark off, before heading to land and assessing the damage. And his first reaction? He felt no fear. “[I thought] bugger, now I have to try and get this thing off my leg.”
Weird pic of the week Patrick Thorendahl is a pop culture fanatic, and has been busy photoshopping himself into celebrity photos. This is our favourite, but you can check the rest out at instagram.com/peejet
Flushed with success
A lottery winner got drunk on Champagne before flushing £333,000 down the toilet so nobody could take it off her. 63 year old Angela Maier downed 5 bottles of Champagne after she found out she’d won in the German National lottery. But when she got a care home bill for her dead husband’s medical bills, she flew into a fit of anger and destroyed the ticket. Maier may have made up the story to avoid paying the bills, but it would be difficult to prove, a court heard. She agreed to pay £3,300 in compensation to the care home.
One of our favourite DJs, we dig deep into Natalie Brogan’s style cupboard…
How would you describe your style? Daytime: comfortable and a bit girly, as I spend most days chilling. Night-time: glamour but not too much especially for a gig. And where do you get a lot of your clothes from, any Dubai gems? I must admit, I stock up when I go back to the UK or when I have family over I’ll place a big ASOS and Topshop order for them to bring. In Dubai, I tend to stick to the high street brands I’ve used in the UK, Zara/Mango/H&M. I’d rather spend more on timeless pieces such as handbags. Do you have any fashion inspirations, or role models? Not really, I like Victoria Beckham’s style but being a DJ I’d look a little silly dressed in posh frocks in a warehouse type venue! I tend to save my more dressed up items for nights off. Being a female DJ, do you ever get any mis judged comments about what you’re wearing, or what you should be wearing to DJ? When I first started playing in nightclubs I wanted to be taken seriously as a new DJ and not just as a female so I would make sure I was covered up, I had big issues about that. I was hanging out with mainly male DJs so didn’t want to be the one in pink and glitter, I toned everything down. Nowadays I make effort in what I’m wearing to gigs but still have that in the back of my mind, to always be thought of as a DJ rather than being female (DJ). And what do DJanes in sparkly bras do for women DJs? Make things a whole lot harder to be taken seriously. The main priority is the music, not what the DJ looks like. If the DJ is in a sparkly bra or less I’d guess it’s a cover up for not being able to please a crowd the right way. What have been your biggest fashion disasters? Probably the ‘puffa’ jackets and Kickers shoes back in Primary school. I had a bright pink jacket! I used to work at Selfridges so I received staff discount and went through a stage of Evisu skirts and Paul Frank T shirts too. Yuk. And if your house was burning down, what item of clothing would you rescue? No clothes (presuming I actually had some on, haha), however, I’d grab my mac and phone and leg it out. soundcloud.com/natalie-brogan

Monkey business The Angry Monkey has, sadly, grown used to exploitation. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and Dubai most certainly wasn’t built with human rights at its core. And I’ve not been above a bit of exploitation myself – although Mrs Monkey does genuinely love donning the gimp suit judging by the lascivious look in her eyes. But when I saw the pictures of a pet monkey being brazenly touted around a tiny club, filled with smoke, more douchebags you could shake a sparkler at and pumping Top 40 filth at tinnitus inducing levels, I was livid. And even more so when said (See You Next) Tuesday night promoter then used the images to promote their brand, cos, you know, animal cruelty is like really cool yah. Said in Liam Neeson ‘Taken’ voice “F*** YOU! I will find you, and the tw@t who took you to the club, I will destroy you, and when I’m finished with you, you’ll wish you were a butt-scratching jibbering monkey who’s only enjoyment is peeing into his mouth and rubbing excrement on his face”.
