Dubai is a city where House and RnB play first fiddle, but if you delve deeper into the scene you’ll find one powered by Metal and Rock and Roll. This scene will be hitting the forefront this month, with 3 big name events. This cover features the return of Dubai Rock Fest with local legends Nervecell, amongst a host of other talent. The last big month before summer also welcomes to the UAE American rock artists Kings of Leon and veterans Black Sabbath. See you in the moshpit!

Looking Back
What we did Tommy Trash @ Nasimi From the mainstages of some of the world’s biggest festivals, Dubai was honoured to have renowned Australian DJ, Tommy Trash, at Nasimi Beach on 8 May for his Dubai debut, courtesy of BONG Events. The long-haired electro-house star dropped dirty house beats and Tomorrowland-style bangers - including Hardwell’s remix of Van Buuren’s ‘Ping Pong’ - ensuring hands in the air from the beach–side ravers. And with a crowd of 2,000 people, there was plenty of atmosphere to compensate for the bar queues and slightly under-powered sound. Next up for the EDM family is Dutch big-room stars Showtek at the start of June. – Sam Moult
Spin Dubai 1st Birthday @ WAFI Mall
Ping Pong and cocktails were the order of the evening as Spin Dubai celebrated their first Birthday. The Susan Sarandon owned franchise is widely credited with the rise in popularity of the sport in the U.S. and we can see why. With paddles at the ready we “tried” busting out our best Forest Gump impression as erratic balls pinged around the venue and into various parts of the club. With half the tables in use for Beer Pong and a live band playing covers, including Sting’s ‘English Man in New York’, the event had a real Dubai Night Club meets US Frat Party vibe. The venue is totally unique in this region and somewhere we’ll definitely be back to polish up on our forehand game. New balls please!
Looking Back Ardal O’Hanlon @ McGettigans
Almas Tower, JLT was filled with laughter as Ardal O’Hanlon had the capacity crowd in stitches with his stand up comedy routine. Famed for his role as Dougal in hit comedy Father Ted, Ardal put the part behind him as he opted to tell hilarious anecdotes about his childhood and comically outlined the many differences between Ireland and Dubai. Our personal favorite was the explanation of how he came to have the name “Ardal”. According to the Irish comedian’s set, his parents named him after a small town in Norway which is best know for an Aluminum plant that has been linked with a serious case of Alzheimer’s disease. And if you don’t believe his parents would name him after an environmental disaster zone, you can always ask his brothers Chernobyl and Hiroshima. Feckin’good craic.
DJ Shortkut @ Deep Crates
The Q Underground was treated to a master class in turntablism as multi award winning DMC Champion DJ Shortkut took to the decks. Shortkut, has been a member of 3 of the most influential DJ collectives on the hip hop scene, the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Beat Junkies and Triple Threat DJs and his 2 decades of experience in the game showed as the veteran impressed an intimate crowd with some high level beat juggling, scratching and mixing. Dropping classics such as KRS One ‘Sound Of Da Police’, he left clubbers mesmerized. A special shout out goes to the break dance crew who were body-popping, jack-hammering and hand-hopping all night, these guys had the skills befitting such a high calibre DJ.

Did You Know?
10% of every ticket sold for all events, and 10% of all bar revenues are taken as tax from the venue and promoter by the DTCM.
Believe it not…
The word pencil comes from a Latin word meaning “small penis.”
Being Vocal
In Poland, when dubbing foreign import TV shows, they hire one actor to do all of the voices - be they men, women, children or mythical creatures. It used to be for budgetary reasons, but now people are so used to it they don’t really like it when it’s changed.

Local News House of Afrika Comedy Jam
It was only a matter of time before Infusion Magazine introduced another bow to their hat. Thursday 29th and Friday 30th May sees the introduction of House Of Afrika’s Comedy Jam featuring some of SA's finest comedians, Joey Rasdien, Chris Forest, Loyiso Gola. It all takes place on Level 41 at Media One, with tickets Dhs140.
Superheroes Kry Wolf
Back for their penultimate open-air dose of bass and house at the Dek on 8, Superheroes have another first under their cap as they’ve booked UK duo Kry Wolf for their Dubai debut. Signed to Dirtybird, the home of low-slung bass-heavy house, and Food Music, the duo take to the Media One Hotel venue on Thursday May 29 with free entry all night.
Deep Crates Oddisee
The Deep Crates Cartel crew are back in international action again on Friday May 23, as they’re bringing over American hip hop/soul star Oddisee for a live show at their new home, Q Underground. He’s performed with the Roots, produced for Jazzy Jeff and De La Soul, and has MC’d over the likes of Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke. He is, in short, one cool cat.
Mark Fanciulli gets some Therapy
Thanks to Boutiq, Monday nights have got a lot more interesting (and Tuesday mornings a lot more painful), as their deep house night Therapy has taken off in style. And the latest big room signing is Mark Fanciulli, the younger brother to house veteran Nic, playing on May 19. A big name producer and DJ in his own right, he first burst on the scene in 2011 with the much rinsed ‘The Tide’ on Joris Voorn’s label, and hasn’t looked back since.
Dubai goes Gaga
One of the world's biggest and most flamboyant pop stars, Lady Gaga will be kicking off her European leg of her new world tour with a onenight date in Dubai on September 10 at Meydan Racecourse. Her current tour has sold over 775,000 tickets to date, and the Dubai leg will be toned down to suit the 'cultural sensitivities' of the Middle East. Tickets for the show are on sale now via Ticketmaster.ae starting at Dhs495.
Looking Forward DUST moves house
Alternative boogie/disco/funk champions DUST have set up home at Kings Club in Barsha for the summer, and are kick-starting their indoor line up with a Voyeurhythm party with not one, but two headliners including the UK’s Linkwood (pictured) and Australian DJ Tyson Ballard. It all takes place on Friday May 23 at the Armada Hotel from 9pm, tickets Dhs100.
We’re hyped for the October debut of Sensation. A sellout event across the world, they’re hosting their first ever outdoor event in Dubai, sensation.com/dubai. Infusion and Think events have teamed up together for post-Ramadan clubbing fun. Think big! New albums from The Black Keys, Chromeo, Little Dragon and La Roux are all in-coming. Woo hoo! Big ups to everyone filming in the new Star Wars, including local DJs Smokingroove and Mark Pickup, if you could 'borrow' us a lightsaber, we'd be forever grateful!
Earhole expanders. Wrong. Very wrong indeed. Everyone jumping on the tech-house bandwagon, deep house is sooooo last summer. Bore off! Good news. Lady Gaga is coming. Bad news. It'll be the most expensive pop sauna in history, as tickets are Dhs495 and it's to be held outdoors on September 10. Everyone's a model/DJ/ actor/writer/musician/ photographer/chef these days. Please find one thing you're actually good at and take it from there.

It’s time to maximize the outdoor gigs, before the AC-gloom descends and summer hits like a sweaty round house from The Undertaker. Here’s where you should be heading over the next few weeks… Justin Timberlake
May 23, du Arena He sings, he acts, he beatboxes, he dances – boy does he dance – and he makes effortless modern rhythm and blues. There really isn’t a lot the old N’Sync star can’t do, which will quickly become apparent in Abu Dhabi when he pops up on the drums, keys, guitar and generally stealing hearts. Great on record, brilliant live.
Kings Of Leon
May 28, Atlantis The downsides – it’s on a Wednesday night, and rush-hour traffic could be a b*tch – are outweighed by the fact Kings Of Leon are one of our generation’s greatest rock bands. They look the part, they sound the part – hello ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’ – and with a decade of touring under their collective snakeskin belts, they act the part.
Last Call for
Summer
Black Sabbath
May 29, du Arena Heavy metal pioneers – and thanks to Ozzy Osbourne, reality TV stars – Black Sabbath have been strutting their bat-eating stuff since the late 60s and have sold over 70 million records worldwide. They’ve won 2 Grammys, been called the Greatest Metal Band by MTV (back when the channel mattered), and since their reunion in 2010, have found a second lease of life.
James Zabiela
May 30, Nasimi Jedi DJ Zabiela works up a sweat at the best of times, and has already promised to come prepared with a vest for his Plus Minus set at Nasimi. The rest of us will simply have to get our heads down and make the most of the outdoor dancing, as Zabiela works up a wonky, bass-heavy techhouse storm.
Showtek
June 6, Zero Gravity A Dutch electronic outfit, brother and brother duo Sjoerd and Wouter Janssen started off creating hardstyle, before softening their approach to incorporate EDM and electro house. And that change brought immediate awards, with a joint EP with Tiesto, and working alongside big names like Hardwell. And they’ll be taking their hard hitting EDM into the great outdoors at the beach-side venue Zero Gravity.
Jamie Jones
June 6, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE Now a weekly institution capable of packing in crowds in their thousands, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE edges towards their season climax with a huge booking, as deep house Godfather Jamie Jones drops by for another bass-fuelled set. Expect sleazy beats, techy grooves and plenty of sweaty dancing on the fabled terrace.
From running his own parties in a Napoleonic fort, being named DJ Mag’s Breakthrough Producer and running his own well respected label, the UK’s Tim Green is a one man tech house party-starter. We caught up with the Disc Over head honcho ahead of his Machu Warriors gig at Story Rooftop on May 23…
PARTY You used to run your own events, Bedlam – what were the biggest lessons you learnt from that? And what’s the mistake you see most club promoters making when you play for them? We still run the events actually, it’s now called Disc Over, which is the label night for my label “Disc Over Music”. We have learnt to expect anything though. Especially where we throw the parties, in an old Napoleonic Fortress in Kent South England. It’s bascially in the middle of nowhere really. So people who want to come there have to make the effort to travel.
Which makes it really special! But we can never guarantee the turn out of people on the night. So it can be a bit of a gamble to be honest. The biggest mistake I see can be hiring the wrong door staff or security staff. Which may or may not be a choice the promoter has unfortunately. I think when the door staff are really friendly, professional and happy, the club and crowd will have a similar vibe. Where as the opposite can easily happen, and I have seen it before, when negative staff have put a really bad mood and vibe into people entering the club. Then that vibe spreads and possibly remains throughout the whole night sometimes. It’s a small thing to notice, but I think it can make a big difference. Techier grooves are definitely coming back in favour – do you feel part of that sound, have you noticed any trends? To be honest I’m not very good at knowing about trends or what’s cool or not. More and more as time goes on I just do my own thing. I have my influences and peers an ever expanding list (which I love). But I’m very much in my own world and enjoy finding all types of music to listen to and be inspired by. Be it old music or new. You’re a big jazz fan, does that percolate into your production? Massively! I think most of my music direction stems from jazz. Especially the rhythmic and groove side of things. I think of myself
as a drummer in disguise sometimes. I really want to be a drummer, and so many of my favourite musicians in the world are jazz drummers for example. But I can’t play the drums, other than program them on a sequencer. Which seems to work for me ok. You burst on the scene a while ago – what was the secret to getting noticed, did you do it the laborious way with demo CDs? Yeah I just sent off a demo CD to several labels. 3 tracks out of the 5 on that CD became my first release ever. So I really have no secret unfortunately. I make it sound easy haha, but truthfully I have been writing music most of my life since I was really young. I have always wanted to do music, and I spent all the time I had trying to get to a point where I could make a living out of it. Plus I did not send off the CD lightly. It took me a long time until I was happy with the tracks. I think today though, I would be exactly the same. I’m still the same now to be honest. I just work hard at what I love doing, making music. You’ve played all over the world, how do crowds differ, how does reading them change? Crowds differ all the time, between countries, cities, and even between clubs in the same city sometimes. It’s part of the fun playing somewhere new. It’s the key skill to have as a DJ, being able to adapt and play in different settings for different crowds. Yet at the same time not to compromise on your own sound and taste in music. And what’s in store when you play in Dubai? A musical journey of good, interesting house and techno to make you dance! Sometimes trippy, always groovy, and always musical! Machu Warriors feat. Tim Green, Story Rooftop, May 23, 9pm-3am, Dhs100 after 10pm.

Friday May 23 sees leading female house and techno DJ Cassy take to the decks. Music News... Soundcloud to discuss copyright
It’s a musical treasure chest for many, bursting with unheard talent, and hard to find remixes and edits. But Soundcloud are apparently set to hold copyright discussions with major labels and publishers, which could put an end to a lot of the site’s content. The big labels are unhappy that they can’t control the user uploaded content, and would want to control their output. Interesting times could be ahead, let us know what you think about it via infusion.ae.
MUSIC BITES “The first billionaire in hip-hop, right here from the mother-f***ing West Coast, believe it!” Dr Dre celebrates as the sale of Beats By Dre to Apple nears its conclusion, earning him somewhere between $640 and $800 million.
Will Ferrell takes on dance music
Anchor Man funny man Will Ferrell has been signed up to help bring ‘I’m In Love With The DJ’ to the big screen, a sideways look at DJ culture. Apparently set in Ibiza, it revolves around a work trip to the island by three girls and their hedonistic holiday. The news comes hot on the heels that Simon Cowell’s much-hated upon DJ based reality TV show will actually go ahead in the near future. Be afraid dance music fans, be very afraid.

Album Reviews... Conan Liquid – Basement Tapes Volume 3 (Infusion Records) House/Disco
I
Infusion.ae
After the very well received Basement Tapes 1 and 2, Conan Liquid is back with his third installment, packed full of gleaming, deep, dubby disco jams. ‘Don’t Believe The Hype’ kicks the EP off, a 7 minute filtered disco work out that does more than pay homage to the DJ Sneaks of this world, it runs off with his cheeseburger and fries, taunting the larger than life house star. It’s swiftly followed up by ‘Ready To Bounce,’ a dark, deep dubby affair replete with rolling chords, swinging beats and a liberal sprinkling of disco funk. And closing the EP is ‘Disco, Non Disco,’ which pays homage to Conan’s musical heritage and crate-digging, all No Wave, 80s action, trippy rhythms and haunting Rhodes stabs. It’s all going on in the Basement.

Chet Faker – Built on Glass Indie/Electronic
I
chetfaker.com
Coming on like an amped up James Blake, or perhaps a more electronic Bon Iver, Australian producer Chet Faker is the latest artist to cross the soul/future RnB divide. Looking like the ultimate hipster, Faker – real name Nick Murphy – has been big on the blogosphere for a while now, largely thanks to his slo-mo, soupy cover of ‘No Diggity.’ And on his first album, he’s developed his sound even further, creating a textured, funk-laden journey that combines house and nu-disco vibes with a more lo-fi approach. ‘1998’ and ‘Cigarettes and Loneliness’ are the main highlights, with booming drums, whirlwind silences and heartfelt, semicroaked vocals resonating. Ultimately, Built on Glass proves that Chet Faker is much, much more than a hipster faker riding the new bandwagon.
Look and Listen ALBUM BITES Fatboy Slim presents Bem Brasil House/Electro Fatboyslim.net
Ah, the World Cup. A time for huddling round the TV, celebrating the random teams (hi there Costa Rica) and for every Tom, Dick and Fatboy Slim to cash in on tenuous Brazilian connections. To be fair to Norman, he’s played some of his biggest gigs in the country, notably to a million people in Rio for New Year, but stretching that connection out to nearly 2 hours of rather banging electro is a bit far. The Felguk remix of ‘Taj Mahal’ by Jorge Ben Jor has a real South American swing to it, while Joey Negro, Greg Wilson and Psychemagik all turn in excellent reworks. But when a compilation album contains a carbon copy of Fedde Le Grand’s ‘Put Your Hands Up For Detroit,’ but with Brazil substituted for the motor city, you know you’ve over reached. Select the gems, and leave the rest on the bench.

MEET YOUR PROMOTER
One of the biggest urban promoters in the region, and home to DJs like Bliss and Shef Codes, we get to grips with The Real Flava, behind nights like 411 and Hush.
Who are you and what do you do? We
are established as one of the leading nightlife companies in Dubai and part of Bliss Inc. Entertainment. Our goal is to not only create great events but also to give our guests a unique experience and promote local talents.
What events do you currently run?
411 Nights at People by Crystal (Saturdays), Hush at Vanity (Fridays), Aces at Boutiq Ultra Lounge (Wednesdays).
What’s the key ingredient to building a good brand and promoting? The key
ingredient for a good brand is to connect with your audience on a more personal level and to always be innovative, seeking new ways to promote your events in order to keep your audience interested and engaged.
– The Real Flava Need to know Running since: October 2006 Run by: Marwan Parham Al Awadhi (DJ Bliss) Artists played: Semtex, Whoo Kid, Green Lantern, Jazzy Jeff, Cut Killer, Nicki Minaj, Lloyd, Kardinal Offishial, Shaggy, Kid Ink, Young Guru Local residents: DJ Bliss, Mr Shef Codes, Masterstepz, DJ Badir, DJ Kaboo and Mo Muscles Venues worked at: Etoiles, Sanctuary, Boudoir, Trilogy, Armani Prive, Elegante, People by Crystal, Boutiq, Republique, SPiN, Vanity
And the biggest success? 411 moving to
a new venue and it’s still packed and busy like how it was previously with the 1st venue. It has definitely created its own following.
What made you start up a Saturday night event like 411, is it hard getting people out at the end of the weekend? We noticed
that there wasn’t a good Hip Hop and RnB night on Saturdays so we gave the people what they wanted!
What’s been the most outlandish/odd thing you’ve seen on an artist rider? 1 family style pack of Skittles, crazy core flavor!
Who do you see as your competition? With new
venues opening constantly,
it becomes hard to pinpoint exactly who is competing for our crowd. We prefer to focus on giving the crowd what they want so that they don’t go elsewhere.
The term urban covers a lot of genres these days – what do you play at your nights? To us, urban
consists primarily of a strong Hip Hop and RnB base. We maintain this by always having the latest tracks and adding a fresh twist to it.
And any nightmare acts you’ve had to deal with? I’d rather not answer this.
How do you balance what you want to see and what the crowd wants, and when have you got that wrong and right? We try
our best to work out what
our crowd wants before organizing events. We do so mainly by interacting with them via social media to get their thoughts and reactions. We also take advantage of our pool of DJs to share our experiences of what worked and what didn’t, what can be improved and so on and we all learn from each other and together come up with stronger ideas.
What do your nights offer that no one else does? Real Hip Hop and RnB
music by home-grown talents.
Who would you most like to bring out to the region? It’s hard to name
just one act or DJ, generally our aim is to bring to the region any good acts that haven’t yet been here. This keeps it fresh.
Promoters I admire: SKAM artists.

Beats Studio Wireless Beats, more than any other headphones, divide people. Some see them as a fashion brand that plays music, while others love the big bottomed end sound, and the status that comes from wearing them. Their latest product, the Beats Studio Wireless, should narrow the middle ground. Sound wise, they’ve balanced things from earlier generations, so while the lower end is still dominant, the mids and trebles are now clearer and smoother, producing a less muddy sound. Added to that, the cups are slightly smaller, and more lightweight than before, giving a snugger fit. The build is still robust, and they’ve opted for folding hinges, so they pack up quickly and tightly. They’re also equipped with several new features. The wireless element works well via Bluetooth, and the rechargeable lithium battery lasts for 20 hours, and recharges quickly. And, tap the Beats logo on the left cup, and it cuts the music temporarily, helping for those midsession conversations. They also come with a dual mode noise cancelling circuit, keeping the background noise to a minimum. Style-wise, they’re far more reserved than previous editions – they still have a tailored finish, and look sleek, but gone are the bold primary colours. By creating a more grown up and refined product, Beats have opened up their product to a new set of fans.

DJ Booth: Mo Muscles
A multi-talented man, Mo Muscles AKA Mo Ismail is part of the Real Flava family, and currently holds down a residency at Boutiq for their Wednesday night, Aces‌
One thing you might not know about me is... I am also an Actor, Personal Trainer, Certified Nutritionist, Rescue Scuba Diver, and a Licensed Stock Broker. My worst ever job was... It would probably have to be my first job when I was 14. I was working in a day care in a gym called “Sports and Health”, and all I did was take care of babies, and change diapers. My favourite ever record is... There are so many sick records dating back to the 40s, kinda hard to pick just one, but if I have to pick one that I never get tired of, it would have to be ‘Starin’ Through My Rearview’ by Tupac Shakur. DJing is much like... Making love to a woman, you start off nice and slow, and little by little you build up the excitement till you reach the climax! Dubai’s clubbing scene is... The clubbing culture here in Dubai is great, but could always improve. The one thing I would change, would probably be the “late” mentality of some people. I feel like this is the only city where people regularly show up to the club around 1.302am, party for one hour, then go home. I’m really proud of... The city of Dubai, which we call home. People always argue, how this country is “young” and isn’t culturally rich, and I always respond “What Dubai achieved in the last 20 years, hasn’t been done in history, in only 2 decades Dubai has become the capital of the world based on vision, ambition, and opportunity.” If I could change one thing about anything it would be... I would spread knowledge, and raise awareness about fitness, health, and wellness among today’s youth. We live in such a lazy culture nowadays where parents give their kids iPads, buy them fast food regularly, and don’t educate them about future health risks. If I had the power to do one thing, this would be it. I can’t live without... My Mac, my music, my protein shake, and my brother. My biggest DJ achievement to date is.... Every time I am able to get behind the decks, and do what I love is an achievement, regardless of what club, what country, or who I am playing with. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... That would definitely be the early 90s! I grew up on the streets of Washington D.C. and all I wanted to do was DJ as a kid while everyone was battling it out.

Joanna Broomfield A newcomer to the Dubai scene, we caught up with stripped back folk singer Joanna‌
My first musical influence was… Laura Marling. Beautiful, poetic and inspiring. The last pop star I liked was… Honestly I hate the term pop-star! I love a lot of new musicians. I get my musical fix looking at the Sofar Sounds Youtube videos from all over the world. At the moment I can’t stop listening to Julia Easterlin. She is an amazing singer who creates her songs entirely from her vocals. Check her out. Best piece of advice you’ve received? The same as my musical motto. I used to be so timid and nervous when I first started performing. I was about to cancel a gig because I was so nervous and my friend told me ‘If only 1 person in the audience enjoys your music, it will be worth it.’ Thanks Bruno! What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Rage Against The Machine. So far from my musical genre but I can’t help myself. The best band in Dubai is… I have just discovered a band called David Beats Goliath. I love their stuff. I heard them on the CD I was featured on for Sikka album 2014, and I was pretty excited to be on the same album as them! My music has been compared to… Norah Jones sometimes (although I’m not sure I agree, that would be nice!), Laura Marling funnily enough. But whenever I ask people they don’t know. Apparently I don’t sound like anyone. I rather enjoy that. Lamest claim to fame? I was on Australia’s Next Top Model back in 2010! I came 6th out of 16 contestants. True story. Best gig you’ve played? Actually I played a gig a couple of weeks ago at the Sikka Art fair and I loved it. My favourite gigs are the laid back, chilled out ones outside in the sun and this was exactly that. People sat and watched on beanbags and really listened to the music. Best gig to date. And the worst? When I first started performing music, I played in a pub in London. The organizer didn’t listen to my music before he booked me and expected me to be a loud band covering popular songs. It was a super busy, loud pub on a weekend night. I played 2 songs, the organizer realised his mistake and turned the football up on the TV. Arsenal 1- Joanna 0. Embarrassing! soundcloud.com/joannabroomfield

Lift off
There’s no shame in asking for a bit of help sometimes. But one Nottingham police officer might disagree: after arresting a suspect, he had to ask for the prisoner’s mum for a lift to the station as he’d accidentally locked his keys in the boot. Amazingly, she agreed and ushered her son and the officer – still handcuffed together – into the back of her three-door Vauxhall Corsa as neighbours on the housing estate jeered and laughed.

Has Dubai’s selfish service attitude gone too far? Our columnist Sarah Lawrence says yes, although she was too lazy to type this diatribe, so she got her maid to transcribe it for her‌ My housemate just walked into the kitchen to see me washing some dishes and looked at me with a sort of half disgusted, half confused look.
She said: “There’s someone to do that for us, you know.” Which neatly brings me to the theme of my article. It is not your right to have a cleaner. It is not your right to have someone else clean up the mess you made. True, we live in Dubai and apparently that means that anyone who lives in an apartment automatically has a cleaner that comes every single day. But while I can begrudgingly accept the fact that we have a cleaner, I will not accept the fact that the cleaner is there to wash my dirty, smelly dishes that I have left to fester in the sink overnight. Leaving someone else to thrust their arm down into a sink that is filled with vile smelling detritus and floating food scraps to unclog the drain that is filled with my leftover Cheerios from breakfast, is not in anyone’s job description. Ever. I recently went to a party and at 2:30am, learned that the guy hosting had woken his two maids up and was keeping them awake sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee, just in case we “needed anything”. I asked him what we could possibly need from them at that time and his reply was: “Oh, you know, more drinks!” To which I replied: “Let them go back to sleep, if anyone needs any more drinks and can’t figure out how to pour the liquid
from the bottle to the glass then I will bloody do it!” This kind of behavior, this mentality, is acquired. In a city where a single Kit Kat can be delivered to your door, it is normal to appreciate and benefit from the convenience that its service industry provides – of course being aware that this is ultimately built upon the exploitation of cheap labour. However, to actively believe and argue that in such a situation you no longer need to be responsible for your own day-to-day waste, at the most basic level – and that this attitude is normal – goes directly against the values instilled in most expats from an early age. What’s next? Doing your business in the toilet and not bothering to flush because the cleaner is coming later? I once woke up to an empty house and a smashed jar of peanut butter on the kitchen floor. Incredulous, I investigated by sending a group message to my housemates… Sure enough, one of them said that they were running late for work and didn’t have time to clean it up and so left it for the maid. This attitude is more disgusting than the act itself. Clean up the peanut butter AND the attitude. Sarah Lawrence twitter.com/sarah_lawrence

One of our favourite promoters, with attitude to match her style, we caught up with No.1 Friday’s Lisa Chauhan… How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as individual, fashionable and funky! I like my hip hop streetwear, fresh kicks and cool tees but love dressing up for an occasion too. I wear anything from designer, high street to vintage pieces. And where do you get a lot of your clothes from, any Dubai gems? I love getting some cool pieces from West LA, and Boutique 1, they can be pricey but one-off pieces are cool. I also love wearing men’s T-shirts from Harvey Nichols but most of my clothes comes from UK and USA online shopping and vintage stores when visiting LA and London. You can always find some cool stuff at the Safa Park Market, and fabrics are great and tailors are super cheap here so I sometimes find things I like and get them made to measure! Do you have any fashion inspirations, or role models? I got it from my mama! My mum is young and super cool. From a very young age I have seen my Mum put amazing colours and styles together to create timeless looks. When it came to Indian weddings, and special occasions, she always made me and my 2 sisters look fab, even now my friends will ask my mum for fashion advise! I also love Rihanna and Alexa Chung for 2 very different styles. You must see a lot of different fashions and styles working in clubs – any that have made you laugh? Sometimes the dudes get carried away with that thug MTV culture and end up looking rather silly with oversized gold chains and clothes and styles they try to emulate which is always amusing when they get it wrong. Also I once saw a chick wearing a tight leather looking PVC type dress that just looked ridiculous… and she was a little chubby, how she looked in the mirror and thought that was cool, I do not know! In fact ladies should never wear PVC, we live in the desert! What have been your biggest fashion disasters? When I was younger I desperately wanted a fringe kind of like the 90210 look, as you can imagine curly haired fringe is not the best look. It took years to grow out, but hey if you don’t try it, how will you ever know! And if your house was burning down, what item of clothing would you rescue? I would have to say my leather jacket that I bought from LA.

Faking the funk Do you know what sucks? Nope, not the entire cast and crew of the York Hotel, but lowdown, pond-dwelling scummers that buy Soundcloud followers. I can just about stomach people buying fake Twitter and Instragam followers (oh, the naming and shaming I could do), but messing about with music is something very sacred. So imagine my amazement when a local producer hawked round his latest track, and it had a startling quarter of a million plays. In Soundcloud terms, that’s a sh*t load. So, you’d imagine there’d be lots of comments, re-posts and online love for said track. 5. There were 5 comments. And yet his previous tracks, with much a much more realistic 3,000 plays, had 30 comments and dozens of re-posts. So, what are we to conclude from this episode, readers? It’s either a crap track, or he’s bought quarter of a million plays. In this instance, we’re going with both.
