Ramadan Kareem from the Infusion camp. We’re back, batteries re-charged and ready for another big season. And we don’t have long to wait until the first big event after summer kicks off with Lady Gaga hitting Dubai on September 10. It’s definitely a sign that the market is ready to expand, but an outdoor gig that early in September had better come with your own personal AC unit and a gallon of water each. We’ve got the lowdown on that gig, and all the big events coming our way in the next few months, while our cover is dedicated to rising house stars Electric Days who are throwing a huge Eid party with a suitably festive line up.

Local News The Summer Series at Level 41
Media One seem to have a monopoly on club space at the moment, and they're taking advantage after the summer break as they've turned Level 41 at the hotel into a boutique pop-up club for 7 weeks from July 31. Featuring state of the art sound and light, our popular House of Afrika takes place every Friday night, while Thursday's Think Events feature a roster of nights with everything from classic house, underground beats (audio tonic) and rock and roll (Step On) catered for. All nights, apart from the Warehouse night feat. Sigma are free entry from 9pm.
Middle East Magic
You wait for one world renowned illusionist to hit the UAE, and then two come at once. First up, death-defying David Blaine takes on a three day residency at the Emirates Palace theatre in Abu Dhabi from August 21 (thinkflash. ae) before Las Vegas based Criss Angel takes his top hat and bag of tricks to Dubai for a three night run of shows from November 12.
Laughter Factory August One of our favourite nights in town returns for 6 nights of fun, laughter and Dubaislamming jokes across the city from August 7. Matt Rees, Adam Bloom and John Fothergill are the men charged with lifting the summer blues, with tickets Dhs140. thelaughterfactory.com

Looking Forward Rumours
Bass DJ and producer Zedd is coming to Dubai this September to play at Zero Gravity. Blues duo The Black Keys are rumoured to be on one promoter's hit list, with a show in the UAE on the cards for the start of next year. The Act have announced a new dinner show, Showtime, starting on August 4.
The World Cup smashed all expectations. And Level 9, Barasti and Zero Gravity rose to the big occasion in style.
Post World Cup blues. Our insomnia had a use for a month, now we’re just counting down the next 4 years, which is a lot of sheep.
Croatia might be the worst kept summer secret, but get in there quickly before the magic is steamrollered by commercial interests.
We’re not a political magazine, but please bring peace to the Middle East, there’s been enough bloodshed and killing already.
We've been hearing more rumours about Pacha and we're excited. Latest is it will be open for October, and after the tantric-like delays, we're hoping it's as good as we think it will be.
Dear Summer, we know we had it good with a long winter, but you've seriously turn't the heat and humidity up to 11 this year. Please make it stop soon!

One Big
The season closing parties might have been a bit muted compared to previous years, but coming force on the scene Electric Days are doing their best to ensure the new season kicks off in style with their Eid party on Tuesday July 29. They’ve taken over a 2,000 capacity tent at the Media City Amphitheatre and have pulled together an excellent line up including M.A.N.D.Y., Audiofly, Blond:Ish and more. We’ve got the Need To Know details below…
M.A.N.D.Y. (PhiliPp)
M.A.N.D.Y. stands for Me AND You. Clever, eh? They helped change the face of dance music with their label Get Physical, in collaboration with DJ T and Booka Shade. They’re German, so most likely will be celebrating their team’s World Cup victory for a loooooong time to come. Their legendary series of sets at Trilogy are ingrained into dance
music legend in Dubai, making them a firm favourite in the city. They play spine tingling techhouse, blending in more cutting edge techno sounds with classic house tones. In short, they’re ace squared.
AUDIOFLY
Spanish duo Audiofly have been making music for the past 13 years, and play a deadly, dirty, jackin’-meets-tech electronic house set (their words, but we agree). They’re signed to Get Physical, and released their debut 2011 album Follow My Liebe (Follow My Love, translation fans) to acclaim. They’ve since launched their Supernature label which helped launch current names like Alex Niggemann and Ali Nasser, while they run their own series of global events, Flying Circus, currently holding down a residency at Sankeys Ibiza.
BLOND:ISH
Dubai regulars, Canadian born but London based Blond:Ish are one of the leading female DJ duos in the world. They’ve released a truckload of quality tech-house tunes on – who else – Get Physical, as well as important labels like Noir Music 2 and Kompakt. They have 21 gigs in June and July – that’s one every 3 days – including venues like Ushuaia and Fabric and pretty much every country in Europe. It’s fair to say they’re in demand right now.
MIA LUCCI
Staying true to Electric Days girl-friendly DJ theme, Australian DJ Mia Lucci completes the international line up, and can boast plenty of international experience. She’s had a residency on Ibiza Global Radio, is resident at Circoloco and has played gigs at Burning Man, BPM and Miami. She’s also got Electric Days history having rocked her previous gig for the dreamers.
+
The Residents
No night is complete without the help of the trusty residents to help set the vibe and create the party atmosphere. Amy Wells and Jacob Bailey have been charged with kicking off the new season for Electric Days, and will be on the decks from 5pm.
The Set Up
Electric Days don't only offer up the coolest crowd and fresh music, they also put a lot of thought and effort into the set up, from the scenery, the lights, the huge great neon Electric Days sign, they go the whole hog. And this, their biggest event, is no different. Using an eclectic theme throughout the 2,000 capacity tent, there will be no leather couches or VIP tables – instead, it'll be like an Alice in Wonderland party, with each corner offering something entirely different. Tuesday July 29, Media City Amphitheatre, 5pm-late. Free Mojitos until 7pm. Dhs220 in advance via Platinumlist.net, Dhs250 on the door.
!In coming August 28
Warehouse Dubai feat. Sigma, Hannah Wants, Artful Dodger, Level 41
While there’s plenty of underground, alternative spirit in the city at the moment, Warehouse Dubai have claimed top spot – if only for their vertiginous location on the 41st floor of the Media One Hotel. And they’ve pulled together their most eclectic line up yet, with current Drum and Bass dons Sigma booked alongside up-coming techno star Hannah Wants. And keeping the garage revival going, they’ve booked Artful (ex Artful Dodger), who’s currently making some seriously good sounding deep/garage tunes. facebook.com/WarehouseDubai
August 15
Bassworx feat. Mistanoize, Casa Latina
Globalfunk does Drum and Bass exceedingly well, Something Big bring out the hot steppers from the dubstep and dark Drum and Bass scene, while Bassworx – as their name implies – cherry pick from the low end frequencies. Meaning that on the night, they can, and often do, cover Ghettofunk, Garage, dubstep, Drum and Bass and more. And they’ve invited back previous guest Mistanoize after his impressive throw-down earlier in the year for Round 2. Plus, with outrageous drink deals – free wine for ladies before 11pm, and Dhs100 for 5 beers all night – this won’t break the bank. facebook.com/BASSWORX.DXB
Hold strong, the good times are just around the corner. We’ve got the lowdown on the big events coming your way this year…. September 10
Lady Gaga, Meydan
2 unknowns: how will thousands of Gaga fans cope in the early September heat and humidity. And how will Gaga’s carefully sculpted stage make up fare after 2 hours of stage lights, running around and the heat and humidity. With tickets flying off the digital shelves, there’s no shortage of interest as the noughties answer to Madonna kicks off her latest world tour at Meydan. Tickets from Dhs495, www.ladygaga.ae
September 18
Arcadia feat. Patrick Topping, Dek on 8
A new venture to Dubai, Arcadia is a deep house party at the Dek on 8 brought to you by the guys behind Warehouse Dubai. The summer heat might still be a factor, but Hot Creations DJ and producer Patrick Topping will be on hand to distract clubbers. He’s got plenty of ammunition, including Beatport smashes ‘Forget’ and ‘Get Beasty’, not to mention access to all the up-coming Hot Creations goodies. facebook.com/WarehouseDubai
September 30
Illusionists 2.0, World Trade Centre
Dubai, the Las Vegas of the Middle East? With shows like this making a regular appearance, parts of that description are coming true. A travelling circus of mentalists (their word), conjurers, hypnotists and more, the 2nd incarnation features The Master Magician, The Unusualist, The Futurist and several more tricksters, and returns to Dubai from September 30 for a 6 night run at the World Trade Centre. Tixbox.com
October 10
Sandance, Atlantis
With the dust settled from New Year, and a decent closing party behind them – with Hollaphonic taking to the stage like pros – all eyes will be on Sandance and their new season line up. Their best formula seems to be a funk/hip hop band at sunset (dare we hope for Jurassic 5?), a big rock band (Foo Fighters are maybe a bit big, but fingers crossed) followed by a strong DJ line up (Hardwell would work well on the big stage). We’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear any rumours. sandance.ae
October 31
Sensation, Meydan
With millions spent on production, and 15,000 people expected at the first ever outdoor Sensation event, this is already a much-talked about event. The line up is yet to be revealed, but the promoters have told us that the music will go from deep house to EDM through the night, and one of their priorities is making sure 15,000 people don’t go thirsty on the night. sensation.com/dubai/en
November 20-23
Formula 1, Abu Dhabi
Not only will there be increased action on the track this year as the final race of the season has a double points bonus, but Flash, the party promoters, will have to pull out all the stops to improve on recent guests like Paul McCartney, Muse, Jay-Z, Eminem and Depeche Mode. 3 day tickets start from Dhs1,165, yasmarinacircuit.com
Rumours DJ Hype, Fabio and Grooverider and more are lined up for Globalfunk. House music star and 'My Love' DJ Route 94 has been confirmed for a show this October. Prince is still in the pipeline for one promoter.

Look and Listen
Music News... How much is that Aphew Twin in the window?
We’re as much a fan of twisted electronic genius Aphex Twin as the next guy, but apparently not as much as this guy who beat off stiff competition on eBay to buy the test pressing to his lost album Caustic Window for an eye watering $46,300. Thankfully, the rest of us can listen to the album via a Youtube stream.
MUSIC BITES “I told [my children] there won’t be much money left because we are spending it! We have a lot of commitments. What comes in we spend, and there isn’t much left.” Nice guy Sting refuses to pass on his estimated $180 million to his children.
Youtube censorship?
Now a major source of breaking new music, Youtube are changing the way they work and are trying to force independent labels to give them their entire catalogues on their premium and free services, with no room for negotiation. It also could mean the site becomes even more pop friendly, with the big labels generating the most revenue from the hits and smaller labels paid a reduced fee, while those who don’t upload their entire back catalogue will be effectively banned from the site.
One of the city’s most talented singers and songwriters, it’s been a long wait for Melissa Le Rue’s debut EP, but the wait is over. We caught up with her ahead of her self-titled release to talk The Grammys, Soweto Gospel Choirs, musical crushes and New York…
You’ve got the Grammy winning Soweto Gospel Choir on back up on ‘Unite’ - very impressive! How did that come about? It was a dream come true, and my management team (Micheck™) team did an amazing job in making the collaboration happen and organizing the trip to South Africa to record with them. The idea came about when we were at Miloko studios in London laying down my vocals for the track. We listened to the new version of ‘Unite’ with my co-producer and co-writer Adam Nicholas. We were all loving it, it had a great global sound, and all agreed that the song would be amazing with a choir. After that, D Peppers of Micheck™ reached out to the choir's executive director and sent her a rough version of ‘Unite’. She loved the potential of the song, and Micheck™ went to work on negotiating the partnership. It’s hard to explain how it felt hearing them sing the song for the first time, there were a few tears! It was one of those
really special moments I’ll never forget. You have a very fluid sound, one that takes in hip hop, soul, funk, Latin, electronic – how would you sum it up? The EP is pretty upbeat with the main influences being soulful jazzy hip-hop, and some electronic tribal percussive sounds. We mixed live instruments and electronic effects and beats, something I love experimenting with. You’ve said before that you feed on positivity – how positive/ negative do you find Dubai, where would be your ideal musical home? I think every place has its positives/ negatives, and how you interpret your environment is often an external/internal conflict. I really enjoy the entrepreneurial energy that people have in Dubai. In Dubai everyone wants to network and collaborate or give you their business card. It’s that kind of place where you can do things that haven’t been done before, as it’s such a young, very quickly developing city. In terms of the original music scene, I find that magazines and TV are very supportive. Radio could be better at supporting local acts; I don’t hear great bands like Bull Funk Zoo and Juliana Down being
played on the radio as much as they should be, but there are some stations like Dubai Eye that do great feature pieces. More live venues with decent sound systems for live music and no licensing permits for professional musicians would help the scene to develop and grow massively. Ideal musical home? From my experience so far it would have to be London, Berlin or New York, all have great venues, and some of the best musicians and producers tend to gravitate towards those cities. But I also loved visiting my mum’s homeland Philippines, Cuba, Trinidad & South Africa, all great musical vibes and energy! Which acts and pop stars do you share an affinity with, any you can relate to at the moment? Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald are some of my all time favourites, but I’m also very influenced by singers such as Jill Scott, Eva Cassidy, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and many many others. Currently I am especially digging Janelle Monae, I almost think I have a crush on her because I respect and love her so much - is she even human?! Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato, Lalah Hathaway, Gregory Porter, Kurt Elling and
Pharrell Williams as well, all are crazy talented! You’re live streaming the release of the EP from Joe’s pub in New York, what can you tell us about the launch? Yes! I’ll be rockin’ with some brilliant musicians, and we’ll be live streaming the event and using social media to connect live with those watching. There will be groups having live stream party/get togethers in other parts of the states, and we’re working on a few live stream goodies which should be cool, stay tuned for those. You’re a regular performer around town, where are your favourite Dubai hangouts for music? And any up-coming gigs in the UAE? When I’m not performing one of my favorite things to do is chill with a glass of red wine and listen to musicians create spontaneous magic on stage so I really enjoy listening to the AFIF Brothers wherever they play. The Fridge is a personal fave, I worked there for 3 years and they’re my booking agency too. But bias aside, the concert series is really unique, high quality, original music. Jazz @ Pizza Express is also great for the scene. It gives musicians an outlet to jam (no permissions!) and The Music Room also host great live
music. I hope you don’t mind but I have to big you guys up too – House of Afrika is one of my favourite nights out! I also love my friends down at Deep Crates Cartel – both guaranteed good vibes and dancing! melisalerue.com

DJ Booth: Scott Somers
Charged with soundtracking one of the best new venues in the city, we caught up with 0 Gravity’s resident Scott Somers.
One thing you might not know about me is... I’ve met and spoken with the Queen of England. My worst ever job was… As a dishwasher at a motorway restaurant, it’s probably why I learned to cook instead. My favorite ever record is... Haha, no way I can answer that. It’s like asking a parent who their favorite child is. Can’t be done. DJing is much like... I really can’t put it into words, not even funny ones. It’s something you feel and if you love the music, it feels incredible. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Like the city, growing at an incredible rate. Eventually, I really hope it can support its own sound. I’m really proud of... Where I’m from (Leeds, Yorkshire, UK) and all the experiences life has brought me, including being part of an incredible musical revolution. What track could you drop in every set? Haha, again super tough. I’ll give you one though Mr. Fingers “Can You Feel It”. A sublime slice of deep house from 1986. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Landing the residency at 0 Gravity, this place is going to be an epic venue (those who know, know). I will always have been its first resident. Being part of its history makes me very grateful. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Fish and Chips (well, I am from the UK). If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be.. Locally, Raxon. I love his energy and sound. Best house DJ in UAE (for now, haha) he is a lovely bloke too. Globally it would be Sasha. There’s not enough space on this page to explain why. Check his Wikipedia, he’s been there, done it and is still doing it. Musical genius. I’m not a politician but… I don’t do politics or religion, music transcends both. soundcloud.com/scottsomers

Weird News... White Wedding
An Australian whose wife cheated on him with one of his best friends has put her wedding dress up for sale in a scathing online ad. It begins: “Due to be married soon? Not planning on staying faithful? Want to sleep with one of your soon-to-be husband’s closest friends? Then THIS is the wedding dress for you! The dress is guaranteed to provide you with approximately two years of reasonable wedded mediocrity before the complete and utter disintegration of your relationship due to your extramarital promiscuity.” The ad has had hundreds of thousands to date.
WEIRD PIC You mugs Yup, that is Barack Obama, leader of the free world, above a caption claiming him to be England centre back Chris Smalling. In total, 2000 mugs were printed with the wrong photo.
Saving Private Jordan
A war veteran who went to Normandy without telling his care home was “quite overwhelmed” after the postman delivered 2,500 cards on his 90th birthday. Mr Jordan made headlines across the globe after disappearing from The Pines in East Sussex so he could attend the D-Day commemorations. He hid his war medals under a grey mac and said: “I want to thank everyone who sent me a card or a gift. Sadly I can’t thank everyone in person so I hope they get this message. I’m just one man and I’m nothing special. Anyone would think I’d defeated Hitler on my own.”

New beach club to introduce tests to stop ‘fatties from getting in’
Big Fish, a new high end beach club on the outskirts of Dubai is opening its doors after Ramadan, and it’s bringing with it a new party concept. Potential clubbers will be weighed and then asked to give a Goonies’ style ‘Truffle shuffle’ which will be rated by the door staff – if it’s still shaking more than 2 seconds later, they’ll ask you to take a quick Body Mass Indexing (BMI) test. Anyone above 30 – which is deemed to be clinically obese by the United Nations – will be escorted off the premises and given a free taxi ride to McDonalds. An un-named source at the club, which is looking to take some of the market from fellow ‘peacocking’ clubs in the region said: ‘We will play great music, on a great sound system with beautiful people. We don’t want to ruin that vibe by putting cellulite and thunder thighs on display.’
DJ Cowboy shame:
‘I’m a rubbish rustler...’

Puma
Re-Cut What’s better than a cool pair of kicks? Kicks that give back to the world, that’s what. Which is why we love the new Puma Re-Cut line. The shoes are made from leftover denim test panels, and are used to create a lightweight shoe upper that’s tailor made for sauntering around Dubai in summer and winter. 100% of the profits from the trainers are then funneled back to the Be Tho orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, where 136 displaced children will benefit from medical care and meals. puma.com.

We have a pair of Puma Re-Cuts to give away to one lucky reader, head to Competitions on Infusion.ae to be in with a chance of winning!

Hate crimes You know what’s funny? D*cks hating on other d*cks. Like techno hipsters laughing at deep house hipsters*. Erm, newsflash douchebags, you’re both d*cks – grow a pair and get off the internet. And hip hop d*cks hating on other hip hop d*cks because… well, because they looked at them funny/wear the wrong trainers/just because they can. And to all those who hate on EDM because it’s the new kid on the block, you’re also – yes, you guessed it – d*cks. Dance music is universal, it’s not tribe warfare, it’s not an episode of Jeremy Kyle where you get paid by the insult. Let’s re-introduce a little Peace, Love, Understanding and Respect to life. * Actually, deep house hipsters are the worst, they deserve everything they get.
