I remember my first Hop Fest like it was yesterday. Hundreds, maybe even thousands, packed in a big tent, the atmosphere buzzing from midday, and for the serious ale fan, your chance to drink yourself across the world. And for those there for a party, it’s one of the best in the city, roaring for more than 12 hours a day, with raucous music, raucous behavior and a truly raucous hangover. It returns again this year, and we’ve got the low down on what to try, how to drink it and what to expect. Oh, and a word to the wise: leave 3 pints of water and a Pocari Sweat out by the bed for your return. Your hangover will thank us the next day. Andy

Looking Back

What we did

Tomorrowland @ Boom, Belgium With 360,000 tickets bought within an hour of going on sale, over 210 different nationalities attending and over 1 million beers sold at last years’ event. ID & T had a lot to live up to on the 10th anniversary of their most established brand and they certainly didn’t fail to deliver. We walked into a sea of flags from across the world as the Global dance community came together at the main stage to witness some of the biggest DJ’s on the planet drop sets in Booms’ mesmerising forest setting. Each stage was built to perfection and had immense lighting/production value to boot. With every drop came fireworks, smoke cannons, tickertape, balloons and light shows that kept revellers in awe of the moment. With over 400 DJ’s booked over 15 arenas there was something for ever dance music fan on display over the 3 day festival. Our favourites were local hero Netsky who had the main arena packed to the brim as he dropped a high octane set including his own productions such as Iron Heart. Tiesto & Hardwell who closed off Day 1 of the festival with a Back2Back set on the main stage, Knife Party who dropped hits such as Internet Friends and Bonfire to an enthusiastic crowd at the Super You&Me arena. Dillinja and SP:MC who rocked the Metalheadz arena dropping Classics such a Grimey to the DnB faithfull and Trance heros Marcus Shultz who played for a stamina enduring 8 hours and Paul van Dyk who ended day 2 with a bang, dropping his classic For an Angle at the Legends of Trance Arena. With too many to mention, other DJ’s worthy of a shout out were Seth Troxler who rocked the Cocoon stage and Derrick Carter, Carl Cox and Richie Hawtin who hosted

their own stages. For the production value alone we recommend that every dance music fan should experience an ID & T event at some point in their lives and with their other global brand Sensation coming to Dubai on 31st October 2014. You’ll have the opportunity sooner than you think. We for one can’t wait!

One Big Electric Days @ Dubai Media City Amphitheatre

The new season was kicked off in style with One Big Electric Days putting on their largest party to date. Held in the Ramadan tent on the Media City Green the Electric Days crew turned the space into a clubbing wonderland decked out with their signature flowers and bunting. We arrived as Blond:ish were coming to the end of their set dropping their huge track Voyeur to a clued up crowd. Audiojack followed laying down a tougher groovier set featuring Terranova’s Tourette and my track of the night Margot’s Voice Chord. Phillip from M.A.N.D.Y. was last up and didn’t disappoint working his way expertly through some of Get Physical’s back catalogue and including crowd pleasers like Shiba San’s OK and Maceo Plex’s remix of Gusgus’ massive Crossfade. An amazing start to the new season and the bar has certainly been set high by Rima and her crew of dreamers who managed to pull off a near perfect night.

Say What? Say What? Say What? Orange is the new sacked

Looking for an easy job where you don’t have to do much work? Simple. All you need to do is get on Kanye West’s payroll, then turn up for work wearing a brightly coloured outfit, or look him straight in the eye and say hi. Apparently Kanye hates these two things so much, that he will have you sacked for it. Except you can’t (legally) sack someone for wearing, say, an orange T-shirt. So you get to stay on the payroll, and are just told to stay out of his way when he’s around so he doesn’t find out. Bingo!

Old Jokes Home

#1 Q: Why do dwarves make bad parents?

A: They struggle to put food on the table.

His funeral is next Tuesday at 2.30, 5.00 and 7.30.

#2 My local cinema manager has died. Did You Know?

Technically, everyone needs an alcohol license to drink in the city. And your license is worked out as a percentage of your monthly wage, while women get half that allowance.

Love is blind (and possibly incontinent)

On the left is Kyle Jones, 31 year old call centre worker. On the right is the lust of his life, 91 year old great grandmother Marjorie McCool. Apparently, Kyle loves the ‘natural hang’ of sagging breasts and the love-struck couple ‘can’t keep their hands of each other.’ It really does take all sorts, folks.

Looking FORWARD Where we filter out the best things that are coming your way...

> Local News > Cover Story > You Know It's Summer When... > 5 Things You Never Knew About Shadowland

Looking Forward

Local News Analog Room returns

One of our favourite nights in the city returns after a summer hiatus, and they’re doing so with an appropriate bang as Moritz Von Oswald of Basic Channel fame, one of the leading pioneers in dub techno headlines on Thursday August 7 at the Q Underground. As part of the Berlin/Detroit axis, Basic Channel characterized minimal techno along with other big names like Robert Hood, Jeff Mills and Mike Banks. He is, in short, a techno don.

Led Zeppelin tribute and Apache Indian

We might be in the sweaty grips of summer still, but the good people at the Music Room are still looking out for music fans, as they’ve booked a Led Zeppelin tribute band for Friday August 8. Tickets are Dhs100 and the show starts from 9pm. They’re also bringing down a very original act as 4 times Brit Award nominated UK artist Apache Indian plays the following week. He’s sold 11 million records, while his big hit ‘Boomshackalak’ has been used everywhere from Lynx adverts to 7 Hollywood films, including ‘Dumb and Dumber.’

The Summer Series continues

Level 41 at the Media One Hotel is the summer clubbing hot spot, as we’ve teamed up with Think Events for a 7 week long residency at the bespoke pop up club kitted out with foosball tables, state of the art sound and light and some big beats. Thursday August 7 is #throwbackthursday with Soulninja and DJ Tim Cheddar on classics duty, while the following Thursday indie night Step On returns. Fridays meanwhile are devoted to our House of Afrika nights, where you’ll find a mix of deep, tech and Afro house and some of the most clued up clubbers in town. All nights are free entry from 9pm.

Rumours

Carl Craig has been confirmed for a gig in Dubai this November. Derrick May’s Movement night is set to start in the UAE this coming winter. Robbie Williams is said to be on his way over to Dubai, to play one of his swing sets.

Heads up all Tony Hawk wannabes, as Zoo Skatepark, the region’s largest indoor Skatepark has opened in Al Quoz. Elbow pads, sick grinds and massive stacks FTW! Marco Carola’s Music:On is still the best night on Ibiza and Ibiza is still the best place in the world. Countdown to next summer begins now. Big ups to Warehouse Dubai who have Sigma, Hannah Wants and Route 94 confirmed for their next few events. Happy 2nd Birthday to Trancefamily UAE, who celebrate with a 48 hour session with local and international Djs starting from 6pm on August 16. facebook. com/TrancefamilyUae

A Dubai clubber telling the guy next to him on flight how s*** the set was the previous night at Sonar on the plane. Turns out it was Seth Troxler sitting next to him, who played the previous night at Sonar. Ha! Season closing/ opening party press promo bullsh*t. Yes, you’ve been closed for 4 weeks, no we’ve not really missed you that much, and Travelling without A/C. We're wusses now, anything over 25 degrees and we melt like David Guetta's credibility.

Top of the

Hops

It’s an annual staple in Dubai, mixing good times, good beer and good music over 3 days. We’ve got the lowdown on the 6 beers you need to try at this year’s Hop Fest, while we also chat music, Kevins and Barry White with resident band The Maplejacks

6 to try Spaten dunkel Hoegaarden Rosée

This is naturally sweet, with a pleasant fruity aroma and subtle hints of spices and coriander. This beer is unfiltered wheat beer giving it a cloudy appearance and a lively, delicate pink to light orange colour. Refreshing and smooth. Features the soft taste and subtle colour of raspberries.

The Brew that first brought fame to Bavaria and Munich over a century ago. It is an old fashioned beer that uses authentic Munich Malt, resulting in a beer deep amber in colour and is unmistakably Bavarian. Full bodied and complex without being very heavy or strong.

Anchor Steam Beer

Designed off the back of the Californian gold rush to quench the thirst of unsuccessful gold prospectors, it uses sweet caramel malts a little more than the fruity/earthy hops. There is some citrus bitterness asserting itself in the finish and after taste. It also has this moreish quality that keeps you coming back for another sip, which is the sign of a well-crafted brew.

Sleeman Honey Brown Lager

Brewed in the tradition of cottage breweries at the turn of the century, some might think the tradition is outdated; we just think we got it right the first time. It boasts a rich copper colour with a creamy foam, creating a full-bodied lager with a touch of natural honey and a slightly sweet finish.

Delirium Red

Using the award winning Delirium Tremens as the base beer. It has a deep dark red colour, a soft fruity aroma, with hints of almond and mildly sour cherries. Sweet and fruity, with a nice balance between sweet and sour and a soft tannin finish, it's an excellent dessert beer.

Westmalle Trapist

This is the “mother of all tripels and was first brewed in Westmalle abbey in 1934. It is a caressing beer with a fruity aroma and a nice nuanced hop scent. It is soft and creamy in the mouth, with a bitter touch carried by the fruity aroma. An exceptional beer, with a great deal of finesse and elegance, and a splendid long aftertaste.

A quick word with… The

Maplejacks

Top 3 tracks:

These vary year on year, but the best ones are not necessarily our usual crowd pleasers, the Hop Fest crowd want to sing. 'Summer of 69' and '(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles' are ones we've tried to grow out of, but, alas, they persist as songs that people still go nuts for. But this year we'd be hoping for a good response to: 1. One Republic – Counting Stars 2. Adele – Rolling In The Deep 3. Lorde - Royals

Favourite Hop Fest memory

Actually it's nothing to do with playing at the Hop Fest, but the memory of it always gives us a giggle. We were arriving for our first set on the Friday afternoon a couple of Hop Fests ago, just as a couple was leaving (bear in mind that the event had only started two or three hours prior to this.) The girl was marching barefoot out of the Irish Village with her heels in her hand, trailed, some 20 feet behind her by a shuffling, sorry-looking bloke who'd clearly treated the event as a sprint rather than a marathon. His other half was shouting "Every f***ing time, Kevin! Every f***ing time!!!" There are a few Kevins every year, and they always lift the mood - for us at least, if not their partners.

Worst Hop Fest memory

The only downer I can think of is the year the sawdust man brought the wrong sawdust for the Hop Fest floor. It was literally dust, not the flaky stuff, and it's specially treated to stop it catching fire from cigarettes. As singers we took in big lungfuls of the stuff on the first day and night. By the second day they'd got rid of it and put the right kind in but it was too late - all the singers sounded like Barry White for the rest of the weekend.

Tips for first-timers

Start with booking Sunday off work. Diarrhoea is a good excuse if you leave it too late to book the time off. Not even a suspicious boss wants to crossexamine an employee on diarrhoea.

Begin preemptive hydration. Now. Bring sunblock. It's cool inside the tent, but there are often huge queues that extend out of the Irish Village gates. It's far from compulsory but we love it when people come dressed up. It's a very high stage so we like to have oversized funny stuff to look at! www.maplejacks.com The Hop Fest, Dubai Irish Village, August 28-30, Midday-midnight.

new k r e v u ne land, o y s g thin t Shadow abi show abou ew Abu Dh the n

5

1

It’s created in collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePant’s leading writer, Steven Banks. So that tells you something about the alternative nature of the show!

2

Shadowland uses multiple moving screens of different shapes and sizes, as well as projected images and superb choreography to tell the story of a young girl’s world as she comes of age.

3

The show was brought to life by Pilobolus, a dance company founded 43 years ago. Physically and intellectually stimulating, they’ve toured 115 shows across 64 countries, while Shadowland has been seen by more than half a million people in the 3 years since it was created.

4

Pilobolus have performed at the Oscars, on Oprah and – surely the most prestigious of all – on Sesame Street, and were awarded a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Programming.

5

Shadowland is a hugely entertaining show, the soundtrack ranges from ballads and hard driving rock numbers, to physically intense stage craft which cleverly plays with light and dark. It is in short, part shadow act, part dance and part circus and totally unique, making it well worth catching this summer in Abu Dhabi.

Album Reviews... Jungle – Jungle Electronic/Funk



I

www.junglejunglejungle.com

Where Rudimental stole last year’s summer soundtrack with their funk-happy mix of DnB, house and beats and pieces, Jungle should do the same this year. They announced themselves with the excellent EP ‘The Heat’ which showcased their blend of Prince-esque jams with reduced xx style electronica, creating a winning hybrid, that was further propelled into the mainstream thanks to their quirky videos, clever internet marketing and their mysterious persona (they’re simply called J and T). And their debut album fulfills that promise, an art-pop explosion of influences including falsetto funk, tropical rhythms, stripped back trip hop and more. But there’s substance to balance the more BBQ friendly beats, as ‘Smoking Pixels’ and ‘Lucky I Got What I Want’ prove. An assured debut.

Kasabian – 48:13 Indie/Electronic I



www.kasabian.co.uk

Kasabian might divide people, but the recent Glastonbury headliners have covered a lot of ground in their past 4 albums. There’s been rock’n’rave, ladtronica, indie with rave, processed beats and more rave-fuelled ladtronica. But now, on their 5th album – devoid of a title (other than the running time of the album) and with no cover art work to speak of – they’ve tried their hand at something different. The big hitters are still there – the boisterous ‘Eeh-ze’ and the sure-to-be-a-TV-commercial bounce of ‘Bumblebee’ – but they’ve now added a glistening, hip hop/synth sheen to their music. And – shock! horror! – they’ve added in three interludes, the amuse bouche of the album world, a way to introduce listeners to their more experimental stuff. Shorn of the same energy as their poppier tracks, tracks like ‘Glass’ and interlude ‘Bleep’ are just plain mistakes. But the closing duo of ‘Clouds’ and ‘Bow’ hint that the band might be able to take their current electronica fixation further and deeper, and provide a bit more substance to their rock’n’rave format.

You’ve got a long summer coming up, how do you deal with living out of a suitcase? And what shows are you especially looking forward to? I try my best to keep it to the weekends, that way I spend time during the week in the studio, working on my projects without too much jetlag. This summer I’m especially looking forward to playing at Panorama Bar at the end of August in Berlin. You know that any night there is going to be sick, the line up will be big and the crowd will be crazy. You’re yet to hit the Middle East, have you had offers from Dubai or Beirut do you know? Not yet, but since the hit I’ve had offers from further away, maybe soon I will. It’d be great to play there, as I never have before but always wanted to visit. Who knows what will happen later on? You’ve just released on Defected, which is dance music royalty – what does the label mean to you? Yeah I just released ‘Pushing On’ with Jimi Jules through them. Working with Defected has been a great experience. They all put their everything into a project and really work at it to make sure it reaches as many people and platforms as possible. Even after the release of the track we are still working together on the Defected15 parties across the summer, they’ve been really great. facebook.com/oliverdollar

DJ Booth: Tom Chubb

Recently signed to Kidology records, and with 3 decades of DJing experience behind him, Tom Chubb knows his way around the decks (and, unfortunately for his friends, rubbish jokes).

One thing you might not know about me is... I’m the person behind tomss***jokes.co.uk. They are not very good - you have been warned! My worst ever job was… Earning the minimum wage in a perfume factory. We made the Pepparami aftershave. My favorite ever record is... This tends to change every day. Today it’s Inner City, ‘Pennies From Heaven’ (Kevin’s Tunnel Mix). DJing is much like... A chance to express yourself through music. Being really shy when I was growing up, people were always surprised to hear I was a DJ. When a big track used to go off, I couldn’t stand there so I used to pretend to pick out my next vinyl fistpumping the air from under the decks. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Pretty impressive in terms of some of the line-ups I’ve seen. I never thought I’d see a car park event here so there are still surprises which is great. The sparklers in the bottles can ‘Do One’ though! I’m really proud of... The improvement in my productions over the last 6 months. I’ve had a remix released recently on Kidology and am working on some original productions and collaborations due out later this year. Infusion Records already have the first refusal on one of them. Check out tomchubb.com and soundsakimbo.com for a listen. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... I’ve DJ-ed at more than 50 venues around the world so there’s quite a few to choose from... NYE 98/99 I did 9pm - 3am for my residency at The Mansion House then went and played 4am - 6am in the main tent at a rave with 2,000 people in an Equestrian Centre near Chichester for Spooky. It was still packed right to the end. I was so tired that I literally collapsed after the last track and fell backwards through the tent and out the back! I was smiling like a cheshire cat though! If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I’ve DJ-ed across 3 decades already (90s/00s/10s) and I really loved the sound back in the 90s. It was much more melodic and underground. The Noughties were probably my favourite in terms of going out clubbing in London. Rulin & Defected @ Ministry, City Loud @ Turnmills - some of my favourite ever nights. I’m not ignoring the decades before that, but I think 1995-2005 was my favourite 10 years and would definitely re-visit if I could. I’m not a politician but… I can’t think of a worse job than being President or PM. Always someone knifing you in the back saying they’d have done it better. tomchubb.com

Grand Hotel Paradox We caught up with Mike Priest from the local punk sensation to chat about their new album, touring South East Asia and Scandinavian pop‌

My first musical influence was… The first album I ever owned was a bootleg cassette of Tom’s Diner by Suzanne Vega and I’ve always wanted to do a punk cover of Luka (turns out a short-lived local band called the Beanies beat me to it last year), so I’m going to go with that. The last pop star I liked was… This is tough as I tend to think all well written pop music is awesome. But to be honest I’ve been a bit out of touch the last decade, so I’m going to risk my scene cred here and say Hootie & The Blowfish, Darius Rucker can write a hook. Our name comes from… A theory on the nature of infinity by German mathematician David Hilbert. Wiki it for bonus points. Best piece of advice you’ve received? If playing in a punk band and being part of this community has taught me anything over the years it’s that you really have to get out there and do everything yourself. No point wasting time waiting for managers or record labels or sponsors to step in ‘cos then your priorities are just in the wrong place son. What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Late 80s/early 90s Scandinavian Pop. The best band in Dubai is… Currently going? Parallel Sound System. Our music has been compared to… Mission of Burma, Fugazi and the Beach Boys (not even kidding about that last one). Lamest claim to fame? As a DIY band, fame’s not exactly high on our list of priorities but we’re pretty stoked to have toured South East Asia a couple of times and recorded and released 2 EPs and a full length all by our lonesome. Our musical motto is… Don’t turn it loose, ‘cause it’s a mother. grandhotelparadox.com

What do you get for the person that has everything? How about a toaster that burns a picture of themselves onto every slice. Simply send in the photo you want on the bread to The Toaster Selfie company, along with the dough ($75) and they’ll ship one out a week later.

WEIRD PIC This Singapore anti-gambling poster campaign wasn’t as effective as hoped for after the caption, ‘I hope Germany wins. My Dad bet all my savings on them’ came true.

Leg it

We’ve heard of rotten tomatoes, bottles of wee (a Reading Festival special) and more being thrown at rock stars, but one music fan in Surrey threw her prosthetic leg at a Robbie Williams impersonator recently, who then used it as a stage prop. Mind you, if we’d been faced with ‘Blobbie Williams’ butchering ‘Angels’ we’d have thrown whatever we could have gotten our hands on as well.

New night ‘Golden Showers’ provokes social media outrage

A new Dubai Champagne spraying club night called Golden Showers has been met with a wave of outrage. The new night, based at the brand new XXXXtravaganza, had planned to give would be clubbers a Jeraboam of Twatter’s premium Golden Champagne upon entry. The wipe clean club then intended to let the golden showers commence, boasting that it would be ‘the most expensive ‘water’ fight in the Middle East’. But the new night has been put on hold after Facebook and Twitter users staged a protest. ‘This isn’t right,’ said one J. Enson Button. ‘Champagne spraying is something that should be done on the spur of the moment, and not as a mainstream, corporate thing. People should not try and make money out of it, it’s disgusting.’

Beatport reveal: ‘No one’s bought a record from us for years, we’re purely a paid-for advertising site’

THE BIG

QUESTION If you could relive any day as a kid, what would it be?

Abs: 24th May, 1993 because this was the day my sister was born and I was so excited to meet her. I went to school and told everyone I knew that I now had a sister. She has been my best friend since.

Bhen: Growing up, I didn’t have my dad beside me, so it would be the time when he used to bring me to our farm and introduce me to his friends. We would spend the whole day playing in the fields, climbing on trees and feeding the animals.

Clyde: The day when I first did a back flip off the back of a moving boat!

Doran When me and my mates got our first skateboards, we spent the whole day and night skating around the neighbourhood.

Greg The day I would re-live was my first bungee jump at 12 years old. I was on a family trip for 2 weeks had 100$ spending money and Spent 99$ on a bungee jump on the second day. Worth every penny!

Jules: When I was an extra in Neighbours, the Australian soap opera. I was so nervous, but all the actors were great, especially Harold, he’s my hero!

Mikey: The first time I went snowboarding. I had never seen snow before, nor had I ever used a snowboard. And the feeling was just amazing. From gliding down the mountain, to the first major face plant after catching the edge.

Tom: When I caught my first chicken, I’d just seen the film Rocky, watching him train catching chickens. I thought I’d do the same. It took over 2 hours of running around to catch that chicken. Boy it tasted good though.

Cool

It’s a Laughter Factory special this issue, as we pitch 2 of this month’s funny men against each other. Who’ll be cock-of-the-walk, and who’ll walk on by?

john

The funniest word is…

matt

Idiot. It’s one of the only words you can say in answer to B*llocks. anything and get a laugh. Try it.

The best heckle I’ve heard is ...

Unrepeatable, haha. There are in reality very few good heckles. Most heckles are just interruptions or pre-emptive punch lines without the style, quality or delivery that the comic was about to use. Be smart. Every gig has a d***. Every single one. Every single night. Don’t be that person.

“Do Peace train you b*llocks!” (At Cat Stevens while he was introducing a new song about injustice).

My biggest claim to fame is…

I once had the same manager as Jimi Hendrix. Not at the same time though. I can’t play the guitar like Jimi but then again he I stopped the doors on the probably couldn’t tell a decent underground for Kevin Spacey. joke about his genitals they way I can. His joke would probably be longer but not as funny. Have you ever used your name or fame to get out of trouble? Yeah it didn’t work. Thank YOU No. metropolitan police.

It’s not big and clever but…

Covering a stranger’s eyes with hands and saying ‘guess Boobies. your who’ really s***s them up for the rest of the day.

John Fothergill vs Matt Rees Have you ever injured yourself at work? Yes, chipped teeth, knocked unconscious, burst nose ....oh injured myself ? No. The very worst injury you can get on stage is getting the loose bit at the bottom of your thumb caught in the mic stand. That’s worse than passing a kidney stone.

I sprained my ankle walking off the stage and have been handbagged in the face by a drunk hen.

Your answer to everything is…

See above. P.S. Can I just add that I’ve been playing the Laughter factory for over ten years now and these clubs are some of the best in the Mhm. world. You are all so lucky to have these great shows on your doorstep. Oh and the oil too, you’re all really lucky to have that!

The verdict: This issue’s winner is John Fothergill, there’s a pint of oil waiting for you at the bar. Laughter Factory this August, laughterfactory.ae

eat sleep rave repeat The Dhow and Anchor We’ve covered supperclubs, high end and high concept venues, and some of the city’s best eateries, and it’s now time to dip our toe – and our handcooked chips – into the Gastropub scene, starting off with the recently re-launched Dhow and Anchor pub.

If you’ve ever lived in a sleepy country village, then the words Gasto Pub normally fill the locals with dread as they form a committee and sign a petition to stop any of ‘that fancy poncy food’ keeping them from having a quiet pint by the fire. Luckily for us we don’t live anywhere like that, in fact we are 4,500 miles from the nearest sniff of a tweed jacket and Hunter wellies. Hiding away at the far left corner of The Jumeriah Beach Hotel sits the newly refurbished Dow and Anchor. Now I never visited before the refit so I can’t tell you if it’s an improvement [It is, it really really is – Ed]. However I will say that you feel transported back to a venue

that kind of feels like home (if you’re British of course) the second you step inside. Familiar beer taps, bar stools and tables with vinegar and sauce bottles indicate you’re in an a-typical boozer rather than any hotel bar. We arrived and found the place pretty full considering it was early on a Thursday night, all the dining tables were occupied and the bar area was buzzing. We received the menu and I’m pleasantly surprised – there are lots of great British staples including Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, Beef Pie, plus a few more modern dishes, all reasonably priced plus they have a rotating roast of the day, Lamb Monday, Chicken Tuesday.

We ordered a couple of cocktails to start with whilst we wait for our starters to arrive, I plumped for a ginger beer based one that was light and refreshing and my guest had a very fruity Pimms with Champagne. Whilst a relatively small venue, it is well designed with a large dining area near the entrance and a second smaller one further up a little flight of stairs directly opposite the kitchen and a large TV screen, while there’s also an outdoor terrace and bar overlooking the beach and the Burj. Considering the amount of people in here it doesn’t feel cramped and everyone has their own space.

Our food arrives, a chicken liver parfait for her and Welsh Rarebit for me. I was slightly disappointed that the Confit Rabbit Shoulder I originally wanted was sold out but the Rarebit was a decent replacement, tangy and sharp but still delicate and creamy. We moved onto mains, the steak of the day for my guest and I decided to try the Wellington Duck leg. Her steak was well cooked with some nice bone marrow on the side and hand

cooked chips. My Wellington was an interesting dish, visually stunning with a basket of puff pasty covering the duck and bubble and squeak below. It was nice but a little sloppy, I felt it needed some more texture somewhere as everything was all a bit lost in the dish. One thing to note is that the portion sizes are very generous and in normal circumstances I think I would have skipped desert, but due to my professionalism to the job I persevered with a delightful summer pudding, exactly the type of English desert that I love and every mouthful was pure pleasure. We retired home, our bellies full and happy. You don’t have to be British or a Brit abroad to enjoy the Dhow and Anchor, but it certainly helps. And for the rest, this is a good taste of England, with cold beer, well cooked Gastropub food and (unlike Britain), weather you can count on.

DJ Top 100 snorefest It’s that time of year again. No, not Mrs Monkey’s annual waxing, but the DJ Mag Top 100 ‘poll!’ About 7 years ago, the poll actually had credibility. Now it’s not so much about how well you can DJ, but more how far you can throw a cake and how far you can elevate the marketing arms race. What it really comes down to though, is a big fat popularity contest (and in some cases, some pretty nifty internet cheating [Oh hey Dion Mavath], but I digress). DJs are, by and large, computer lovin’ geeks who spend days bunkered in their studio, listening to the same tweaked hi hat on loop. Clubbing might be cool, but why should DJs? They were the introverted, autistic ones at school, who NEVER won any popularity contests. So why does the poll matter? Because dipsh*t promoters who don’t know their Guetta from their GusGus need a list to tell them who’s hot and who’s not. As a result, artists need to boost their ranking by spending your money on FB ads and cheesy Youtube videos to raise awareness. Great news for cheesy-commercial-big room producers, bad news for grass roots producers. Monkey Out... The Angry Monkeys’ views are his own, and don’t necessarily reflect the views of Infusion Magazine.
