Writing about yourself can be one of 2 things. Either an unbridled joy resulting in a tome that will rival War and Peace (you’re narcissistic), or incredibly awkward, as you struggle like Bambi on ice between the first and third person, with the end result a schizophrenic mess. DJ biographies then, a necessary evil. We’ve got the lowdown on what to avoid, thanks to a bio from hard house DJ Andy Whitby that quickly went viral, while we also point you in the right direction on what you should include. Elsewhere, our satirical newspaper The Spin returns with more made up jokes, the Angry Monkey takes a chill pill while on holiday, and we have all the news, reviews, previews, event listings and more to take you through the next 14 days of existence. Enjoy the issue! Andy

House of Afrika @ Level 41
The 2nd weekend for the House Of Afrika Familia at our new summer venue, and another night of rave friendly vibes and deep Afro house from residents Afroboogie and Charl Chaka. And we managed to keep the crowd cool despite the bouncing dancefloor with not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 air con fans (you know it’s summer when you boast about how many aircon units you have in your club). Not to be outdone, our partner in musical rhyme, Think Events, had a rip-roaring night as they went back in time for their #throwbackthursday night, with a packed out crowd doing the time warp to retro classics from Soulninja and Tim Cheddar. Roll on the rest of the summer!

Say What? Say What? Say What? How not to stage a gig We’ve heard on the grapevine there were attempts to stage a Cure concert in the UAE a decade or so ago. All was going well - tickets selling briskly, venue booked etc - until government officials asked to hear some of the band’s songs. ‘Killing an Arab’ was the first song on the CD sent from London by the record label. The concert was cancelled.
Old Jokes Home
Q: What’s the difference between a chickpea and a lentil? A: I wouldn’t pay £100 to have a lentil on my face.
Flip-flopped
Spare a thought for Brazil’s mighty Havaianas. To celebrate the World Cup, they created a range of flip-flops to celebrate each of the competing countries. They have ended up with thousands of unsold Spain, Italy and England pairs. So many that they can’t even give them all away. FYI, Havaianas were invented by a Scotsman.
Dancefloor Dictionary Premature etrackulation When the DJ gets the count of the build up wrong, and starts fist bumping a bar early.

Local News CampX launches
Hands up if you’re one of those that moan you can never escape the pull of nightclubs, late nights and after parties, and want to do more with your weekends? Yeah, us too. Which is why we’re stoked to see the introduction of CampX, a 6 week outdoor event that’s loosely based around the show Survivor. Groups of 5 take on various challenges each week, with a grand prize of Dhs 25,000 at stake (not to mention a fair amount of pride). Base camp is located an hour’s drive away from Dubai Marina, with dates running from September 26 until mid-December. For more information, and to sign up, head to facebook.com/campxuae.
No.1 Events
Hip hop and RnB company No.1 Events have teamed up with Marina hotspot Atelier M for 3 new weekly nights. Mondays are Brooklyn Base with DJ Brooklyn, with half price drinks from 6-9pm, and new and old skool hip hop, RnB and funk, while Tuesdays welcome down local band Hamdan Al Abri (pictured) and the Funk Radius for a weekly residency. And they close proceedings with J’Adore on Thursdays, with Shef Codes and Brooklyn on deck duty.
New ladies nights
Zero Gravity is adding to its nightlife portfolio, with new ladies night Lost Angels. The top tier of the venue will be dedicated to the night, with four hours of sushi, quinoa salad, cotton candy, cocktails and more available for Dhs100. Men are welcome all night, and both floors will be open to the public from 11pm. Just around the corner, The Underground have announced their new ladies night, offering unlimited house drinks from 8-11pm for Dhs100, while live band Jetlag play until midnight.
Looking Forward Up in smoke?
Smoking in bars and restaurants could be a thing of the past soon, as Dubai Municipality has announced that it’s getting tough on smoking in public places. The act, part of UAE Cabinet Resolution No.24 concerns the ‘prohibition and control of tobacco use in public places for the public interest,’ but there’s been no definition of what constitutes a public place as yet. Fngers crossed bars and restaurants fall under the remit.
Rumours
Techno don Ben Klock is apparently heading to Dubai according to one source. Goldfish are returning to Dubai at the start of December. Booka Shade are confirmed to play in Dubai in mid-September Fabio is lined up to return to the city for a DnB night, while Osunlade is set to return after his stellar set earlier in the year.
If you’re getting frustrated with Soundcloud and its increasing regulations, try hearthis.at, a new user friendly site that’s starting to gain traction. We've found our new DIFC hangout, Wings and Rings (although we prefer to call it Wings and Tings, innit bruv). All your fingerlickin' chicken wing cravings catered for. Word on the street is that if Dubai Expo 2020 goes well, the country might apply to host an up-coming Olympics. Get training for those obscure sports now!
RIP Robin Williams, a true comic genius that left us too soon. Club and music PR. So Djs are music stylists now are they? Righto... Paris Hilton getting paid silly money in Ibiza ($2.7 million over 4 nights) to play silly music to silly people. The idiots really are winning.
One of our favourite new nights returns with a 5 DJ line up for their August party, with rising Drum and Bass stars Sigma headlining. We caught up with them to talk No.1s, drinking less beer and wallies, while we also preview the rest of the line up including Hannah Wants and Artful‌ Welcome to Dubai - it's been a big year for you so far, what have been the highlights? Being awarded our Number One record followed by the Gold plaque can't really be touched. We have been working for years and to finally get this level of recognition means a hell of a lot to us. Playing live on BBC Radio 1 at Glastonbury was also a highlight.
were told to take it down by our record label! It was all a bit sudden.
And if you were going to do a parody of the Kanye West song like James Franco and Seth Rogen, how would you do it? I don't think you can really top that video. Nothing we could do would be funnier, they absolutely smashed it
How did the No.1 celebrations go? You originally gave your No.1 track We can't remember! 'Nobody To Love' as a free download - how many copies got downloaded How does it feel to be the new poster before you realised you were onto boys of the Drum and Bass scene? Not really sure we are, are we? something big? I think we gave away about 5 thousand copies before we
I'm sure there are better poster boys out there! If we are then it’s lovely!
What expectations come with being a big name, have your sets altered or what you're producing? And how have your fans reacted, DnB fans can be quite particular about being underground at times? We have generally had good feedback from our fans. There is the occasional wally who wants us to stop selling out etc. We just offer free hugs to these kind of fans, often very angry people! In terms of our productions, we are still in the studio all the time making music. That’s the main thing.
You're on a line up with Artful and Hannah Wants, so a real spread of music, which is increasingly common today - are you garage/ techno fans?
We love a broad variety of music so we can't wait to check out the other sets. It’s going to be a lot of fun.
What's in the pipeline for the rest of the year?
More music, more parties and less beer.
Get To Know… Hannah Wants
Proof that good residents do rise to the top, Hannah Wants was a staple on the Birmingham house scene, before making her way into production with the much hyped 2013 track ‘Dappy’ (so called as it was due to be an N-Dubz remix, before she realized it was much too good). She’s since broken out of the UK scene into the international world, with an infectious blend of house, techno and bass bin friendly beats.
Artful
Previously working under the name Artful Dodger, Mark Hill has broken out of his very successful pop/garage persona and created a new bass hybrid sound, but still including plenty of meaty 2-step beats.

Music News... ‘Free’ Palestine
One of the city’s best DJs, and an ex-Dubai rapper have teamed up to write a protest song inspired by the violence in Gaza. Bass and DnB DJ Somalie got together with Jabbar, ex of The Recipe, and have written ‘Free,’ a rumbling bass-heavy hip hop number, with all of the proceeds going to Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. The track is available to buy now from iTunes, emusic and Amazon. Not only is it a great track, it’s got a hard-hitting message and could help make a difference in Gaza. soundcloud.com/jabbar/free-ft-tala
MUSIC BITES ‘I feel like they are ripping us off’ Paul Oakenfold joins the growing dissent, arguing that Ibiza is getting over-priced and overly focused on the VIP experience
Rumours have been rife for years that legendary trance brand Gatecrasher were in millions Gatecrashed? of pounds of debt. And following an in-depth investigation by online news source BeatsMedia, Gatecrasher have responded by saying ‘many of the facts are completely removed from the truth.’ High profile DJs like Tim Sheridan have replied and said the brand have left ‘A trail of misery and non-payment over 20 years. And worse. While 2 million in debt to honest people is left behind the UK the next day they are larging it in Ibiza while suppliers and individuals go under.’ Gatecrasher insist that their Birmingham and Ibiza branches are open for business as usual. beatsmedia.com/gatecrasherthe-gate-that-finally-crashed/
How Not To Do It “Andy Whitby is not just a hard house DJ, he is an experience. He is a state of mind. He is the transporter of minds and souls to an amazing frantic paradise that, while leaving you knackered, strangely also leaves you feeling re-invigorated. At 6ft tall and broad-shouldered, with his trademark shaved head, a chunky ostentatious chain around his neck, and immaculate dress sense (if it’s not designer, it doesn’t go anywhere near him) he makes an imposing figure who commands respect. His confident appearance is matched by his masterful control of a good mixing desk. Before each set he always powers down the previous track and leads the packed dance floor in a show of appreciation for the out-going DJ, before kickstarting his performance into a blaze of visuals, an orchestra of special effects which extracts every quality beat of each track as he begins his show. To watch Andy DJ is part of the Whitby experience. Cocky? Perhaps, but certainly not arrogant, Whitby is now in control of the minds and bodies of his audience. A very precise and confident body language gives a visual indication to what he is playing as he acts out each track. Yet, he is not dancing; this is something far more emotional. Imagine watching a porn star having hot, rough, yet passionate but dominating sex to a breathless, wailing lover which, in this case, comes in the shape of a mixing desk. Forceful, dominant, aggressive yet somehow tender and caring. The visual impact allows your body to further immerse itself in the ecstasy he is submitting you to; your ears alone cannot possibly absorb everything that he is throwing at you."
DJing is much more than just music. It’s about how you promote yourself, and a large part of that is your biography – for many potential promoters/bookers, it’s their first introduction to you. Here’s a classic example in how not to write it which quickly went viral last year, followed by some tips on what you should do.
How To Do It Step 1 Write down all your DJ achievements in ranking order. If you’ve played at Creamfields, that goes at the top. If you’ve played at your Dad’s 50th, that doesn’t go anywhere near the list. Then write down a list of any releases/remixes you’ve had, again in descending order. Step 2 What makes you unique, what makes you stand out from other DJs? Do you have a broader range of music, are you a skilled decknician, can you cut and scratch, or do you play something no one else does? Write down what it is, and try not to make yourself sound like a prick in the process. Step 3 Get some testimonials. Press cuttings and quotes are best, but if not, ask previous club owners, promoters, fellow DJs for quotes about you and your performance. If you turned up, vomited on their decks and punched the promoter’s girlfriend, then you might not want to go there… Step 4 List all your internet homes, with FB, Soundcloud, Mixcloud, personal email. Step 5 Compile Step 1-4 in order, in 4 separate paragraphs. Congratulations, you now have a bio. Alternatively, you can get in touch with andy@infusion.ae, and we’ll custom write your biography for you, giving you a creative spin, and taking the stress out of promoting yourself.
We take them for granted every weekend, but what makes a good sound system, are there magic frequencies and do DJs who go into the red on mixers deserve to be banished from the booth forever? We caught up with James Field, the man charged with making Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE sound so good week in, week out… What's your back ground in sound systems, where have you worked before and how long have you been with Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE? I’ve been working in show production for over 20 years, and have been fortunate enough to have had a really varied career. Theatre shows, TV shows, touring artists, club installs, and everything in between. After a serious back injury, I decided to stop moving heavy speakers around from place to place
and focus on permanent installations. I’ve been with BMI UAE since almost the beginning. Definitely long before there was any production installed. Through a happy accident of timing I came onto the project under Piet Goedhart who is the Technical Director for the Blue Marlin franchise and a very good friend and respected colleague. He actually designed the first ever system in DC-10, and is one guy that I never stop learning things from.
How important is the sound system? And is there much difference between Void/ Funktion 1/AudioTeknik – what do you use at Blue Marlin and why? People love hearing good music on a big sound system. There have been many studies about the way music can affect our mind and body, and I personally believe that good vibrations are soothing to the soul. Bad quality sound can have the opposite affect. It can be fatiguing and leave you feeling drained and anxious, even if it’s on a subconcious level. There is a huge difference between many of the brands. For me as a system designer, I want to work with brands that have a diverse range of quality loudspeaker designs. I have used many brands over
the years. Some of them have rubbish sound with nice looking designs, clever marketing and careful product placement. Others are really great products. My personal favourite is Eastern Acoustic Works due to the fact that they have a speaker model for just about any situation, and they give me excellent support. I have also done some nice installs in the past using Funktion 1 and Meyer systems. In Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE we use EAW speakers exclusively. The venue has been so successful that we have had to expand the system as the crowd became bigger, and the artists booked became bigger. When we did the original system installation we never could have predicted how massive the parties would become. We keep evolving
the production value as the venue grows. This season is going to be even bigger. This is due mainly to the venue owners’ passionate belief that sound is the most important thing in the club, and willingness to keep investing in the system. What club mixer do you prefer? Well the big two players in the clubs are the Allen & Heath Xone 92, and the Pioneer DJM900NXS. For sound quality the Allen & Heath wins hands down. Nowadays all the big internationals are clueing on to this, and I’d say that 90% of the DJs at BMI ask for the Xone92 in the booth. The Pioneer has effects, but the signal path is all digital, and it very much sounds that way. If you must use a DJM900, then definitely use the digital inputs, rather than the analog line inputs. This way you are cutting out a whole stage of (nasty) digital to analog, and then analog back to
digital conversion on every input. Where do Dubai clubs put sound systems in their priority list? In general the party-goers of Dubai are very spoiled (in a good way). The Dubai club scene is very competitive, and smart operators know that the standard is high and the punters expect to be wowed. I think what we did at Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE raised the bar to a very high level. After the financial crisis the high end installation market in the rest of the world went into a big slump, but in Dubai people want bigger, newer and better – which is great for everybody. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement here. What are the most crucial factors in good sound for a club? If you want truly amazing sound, the single most important factor is to get the sound
design going at the same time as the interior design, and have the 2 designs develop in harmony. I see so many clubs that look beautiful but the interior designer did not even begin to think about acoustics or potential speaker locations until the sound designer came in, which is mostly too late, because people are already emotionally attached to the aesthetic design, and don’t want to make changes to have good sound. If you have bad acoustics you are fighting compromise with sound from the start. It can be good, but it will never be amazing.
There are some frequencies that cause pleasure, or replicate nature – how can you tell when when that’s happening, what do good frequencies feel like? The human ear is tuned to pick up frequencies around the human voice, and also to precisely place environmental sounds into a 3 dimensional map in your brain – makes sense right? This is one reason I pay very detailed attention to the midrange on a system, because our ears know if something there is not right, because it’s naturally what we are designed to listen to. Any system can have Which clubs get it right in the massive bass and sparkling region? And internationally? high end, but if the midrange Remembering that there is is not clear and detailed, a no such thing as a perfect couple of hundred thousand sound system, I don’t think years of evolution ensures that that there is an indoor club your ears will not be tricked in Dubai that has truly nailed and will know if something it. I am cursed in that it’s not isn’t right. Our ears are very possible for me to go to a club sensitive to spacial perception, and not critically listen to the and every person’s ears system and just enjoy it like knows if a sound wave is regular people. I would have in or out of phase, or if it is to say that the EAW Avalon 2 surrounded by reflections and system which has just been reverb – even if you have no installed in Boutiq is a very idea what that is. nice system and I like the Funktion 1 system in Armani What are good frequencies? Prive (it is a very difficult space I think that is very subjective, acoustically). My favorite sound and each individual would system is in Space, Ibiza. The have a different answer. Terrace has the speakers in How else do you explain the exactly the right place and it just millions of people who love sounds really warm and true. Country Music?
Bass and sub bass tones in tracks are getting bigger and bigger – how low does the BMIU system go? Should you physically feel the force of a good sound system? Most decent club systems will go down to about 30 cycles per second. These are the frequencies that can really, physically move you. At BMI, just for the low frequencies, we currently have a combination of twenty-four 18 inch bass drivers and twelve 12 inch low-mid drivers around the dancefloor, being driven by amplifiers which can deliver around 50 thousand watts of power in microseconds. I think it goes alright.
Djs and their music are the other factor in a soundsystem... To all DJs I say this. Use your ears. Know what compression sounds like. Know what distortion sounds like. Avoid both of these things. Mix with your channel gains and leave your master in the sweet spot. If the master is metering red and it’s not loud enough for you then guess what? Turning the master up will not make it louder, it will just make it sound horrible. If you’re lucky enough to play at a venue where there is a sound engineer or a system tech, listen to them. At the end of the day it’s your responsibility to make sure that sound system is sounding as loud and clean as possible. I can make a system sound like liquid silk, but if you don’t know or care how to use a mixer properly, it’s going to sound bad. Regarding which format, MP3, WAV, vinyl it doesn’t really matter. They can all sound good if they are a clean copy straight from the master recording. There's an old saying – ‘if you put excrement into a sound system, excrement will come out of it’, or something like that...
What music do you use to test the sound system and why?
I have a USB key on my keychain with a folder of test tracks on it. Almost none of the tracks are there because I like the songwriting. They are a mixed bag of uncompressed WAV files and MP3 files of varying bitrates. There are some tracks that I keep coming back to as a reference, and those are the ones that I have nice, original mastered WAVs of. The tracks of the moment are usually 320kb/s mp3 files, cause that’s the format 99% of DJs play. Then I also have a couple of low bitrate files which I throw on just to see how the system handles it.
Here are 4 weapons at the minute:
Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (WAV) – just the intro. The drum production on the original master of this track is amazing. If you have gotten everything just right, you will hear the sound of the room after the snare drum and the very subtle reverb the engineer has applied over the whole kit. On a poor, overly processed or compressed sound system you will hear none of that and it will sound like somebody hitting a cardboard box with a dead fish. There is also a very subtly distorted Rhodes Electric Piano that just
does a syncopated punctuation of the bassline, which I bet most people never even noticed was there, even though they heard it a million times. Daft Punk – Doin’ It Right (WAV) This is a superbly balanced and spacious mix. The low end is extremely full but never compressed, and the vocal production just puts your head right there with the singer. On a big system this track should give you a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart with the low end extension – right down to the lowest sub frequencies. If it doesn’t do that, you’ve done something wrong! London Grammar – Hey Now (WAV) The stereo imaging in this mix is spectacular, and I currently use it to check how immersive the system is. The goal is to get waves of sound enveloping your whole body, without being aware of its source. The Eagles – Hotel California (MTV Live Unplugged) WAV A beautifully mixed live recording of a great performance, complete with crowd noise and all the trimmings. You should be able to close your eyes and really believe that The Eagles are right there in front of you. Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, www.facebook.com/BMIUAE

We get up close and personal with the PURE Sky Lounge and Jazz @ Pizza Express resident to talk disco, hamsters and Jazzy Jeff
One thing you might not know about me is... I play saxophone and have a hamster called Tiny Phil. My worst ever job was… Selling electricity (don’t ask). My favorite ever record is... ‘Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay’ by the legendary Otis Redding. DJing is much like... Cooking, it takes many an ingredient to make a great set and can be easily ruined. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Hit and miss but full of hidden gems. I’m really proud of... Where I am and where I’ve been. What track could you drop in every set? Tough one as it depends on the venue but who doesn’t love a bit of Lionel Richie ‘All Night Long’ at the end of an evening. I can’t live without... Coffee, Cheese, CSI and Pink. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Opening up for the Village People on the main stage at Bestival, they’ve still got it. What is your guiltiest pleasure? R. Kelly and Babybels. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... The 70s, other than the whole disco vibe, the outfits were outstanding. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... Another tough one but I reckon Jazzy Jeff so I could recite the whole Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme to him in a shouty manner… I’m not a politician but… I’m great at talking sh*t. www.mixcloud.com/lucypink

Weird News... Sprout of his mind
A British man has successfully pushed a brussel sprout up Mount Snowdon in Wales using his nose. No, seriously. It took him 3 days to scale the 1,085 peak, raising more than Dhs25,000 for charity. The 49-year-old, who practised by pushing a sprout around his garden, took on the bizarre challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. He admitted: “People definitely think I’m mad, and I’m beginning to think it myself. It hurt my arms, my legs, my feet, my knees and my neck.”

The pen(is) mightier than the sword… A FEMALE RUNNER has been using a smartphone app to draw rude routes on the streets of San Francisco. Claire Wyckoffs, 33, turns her morning runs into works of art - mostly of penises using her Nike+ tracking app. It began when she noticed that the mapped route of her jog resembled a rough sketch of a corgi. “That’s when I realised that I have the pen tool on my phone, and running could be my paintbrush,” says Ms Wyckoff. “My husband is the real hero in all of this. He’s such a good sport when I say: “We’re running a penis today!”, he’s actually gotten into it. He’ll tell me: “This ball is not looking right - let’s run in this direction.”

RTA to launch new Tech House Bandwagon Following the success of the Deep House Bandwagon, Dubai’s RTA have launched an all inclusive Tech House Bandwagon which will service the whole city. The Tech House Bandwagon will start in Bur Dubai every Thursday evening and finish early on Saturday morning. Once you’ve bought your Dhs15 ticket, you’ll be able to use the full range of facilities including access to Richie Hawtin’s hairdresser, the Maschine branded tech section and full Wi-Fi access so you can start Twitter wars against the Deep House Bandwagon. ‘It’s great to finally have caught up with Europe,’ said one techno head. ‘I’ve actually been on the Techno Bandwagon for several weeks now. Like they say with techno, it’s not about the destination, but about the journey.’

Mutombo It began in Africa… First released in 1993 for Dikembe Mutombo, a 4 time NBA defensive player fo the year, this basketball shoe has been brought back to life. The iconic 90s styling remains, as does the strong African heritage and inspiration on these hi tops. Our favourite version is the classic white and blue colourway, with a running white upper, with hits of blue on the heel and laces, and a full colour shield logo on the tongue bearing the digits 55, Mutombo’s squad number. They’re out now, with a RRP of
$105.

True Detective If you want proof that TV is outdoing Hollywood at the moment, look no further than this 8 episode HBO series that tells a dark, seedy story of violence, abuse and cover-up spanning an entire county with everyone from the Sheriff, Governor and local idiot involved. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play detectives Rust and Marty unwillingly paired together to solve the murder or sacrifice of a young woman out in the forest. Little do they know that this can of worms is about to turn into a cesspit of gruesome and hard to digest findings. Dark and essential viewing. Scandal We see that judging face. Scandal, Revenge, Ringer and the like all produce this look of disgust upon friends and TV nerds faces when we let slip and ask a little too enthusiastically “Do you watch....?” I made the mistake of letting my partner walk in on me whilst watching an episode (perving over Kerry Washington) of the glossy political drama and I’ve not heard the end of it. Fast paced with lots of presidential plot twist, mainly involving his mistress and fast scene edits that are often playing to a James Brownesque soundtrack, this is excellent easy viewing and something you can just throw yourself into without having to think too hard after a long day at the office. Fargo How do you re-interpret cinema gold for TV? Well, you invite Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman as two of the lead actors, extend the Coen Brothers original into a darkly comic 8 hour series and stay true to the Minnesota quirkiness (‘Oh yaaaaaah’). You might know the plot if you’ve seen the film, but there’s plenty to keep new and old fans entertained in this excellent reboot.
Top Boy We often miss the bit of gritty realism that UK TV has to offer, so when we happened across Channel 4’s mini drama Top Boy, it was a refreshing find. Divided into 2 seasons with 4 episodes each season, we’re told the story of bad boy with a conscience, Dushane, and his hot headed side-kick Sully as they join forces with the big boys to rule over fictional Summerhouse estate in Hackney, London. Set against a backdrop of 10 year olds with guns, pregnant women dealing drugs and a rather touching story between a young boy trying to care for his mentally ill mother, this is a well put together, pretty satisfying gap filler between your GoT and True Detective episodes with great performance from several rappers including ex So Solid Crew member Ashley Walters and Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson. The Tick Vs… We remember running home from school at 3.30pm, straight to our bedroom to complete homework, bath time and back downstairs for bang on 6pm to watch 2 things – The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Tick! We loved/still love The Big Blue Bafoon that is The Tick, so we thought it was time to bring him back in focus: a superhero who has a heart of gold, but in reality, not a very successful superhero and definitely not one you would actually want saving you. With nemeses such as The Carpeted Man, Eastern-Bloc Robot Cowboy, Bi-Polar Bear and Uncle Creamy (just wrong), tongue in cheek and quite grownup jokes, this is still really great viewing well into your late (late) 20s. Line of Duty What’s dirtier than a dirty cop? Cops investigating dirty cops. That friction leads the second series of this BBC crime drama, as DS Steve Arnott digs deep into the lies and betrayals following an ambush on a police escort. And any series that includes the excellent Vicky McLure in it is a winner with us.
House of Cards Another TV series capable of attracting big name stars, in this instance, Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright as the powerhungry Underwoods, House of Cards is an update on the 80s UK series, but with big Hollywood values. The story lines take in crime, politics, affairs, all the standards, but it’s Spacey and Wright as the two main leads that define the gripping series, as they go deeper and deeper, and further and further down the rabbit hole of power. Bob’s Burgers The Simpsons have lost their mojo, Family Guy’s descended further into a crude parody of itself and South Park is hit and miss. Which leaves us with the excellent Archer, and Bob’s Burgers. There’s more linking the two than just being ace though, as H. Jon Benjamin (the voice of Archer) takes on the role of Bob, while off-the-wall comedienne, Kristen Schaal excels as one of Bob’s kids, Louise. Now commissioned for a 5th season, Bob’s Burgers is a gentle, funny and zany – but zany good – animated series looking at Bob, his family and his burger restaurant. Broadchurch UK TV has been resurgent of late, with crime thrillers leading the charge. And this is the best offering from ITV, and stars two of TV’s best actors in Olivia Colman and David Tennant, two cops charged with unraveling the death of a young boy in a quiet seaside town. The pace throughout is excellent, and most of the well-drawn characters have something to hide – but did they do it? Season 2 has already been confirmed, while the American rights to the show have been snapped up by Fox for the 2015 season.

AUGUST 28
Grass is always greener (not that sort of grass) The Monkey had the privilege to return to my homeland over Ramadan, for some rest and recuperation, and re-acquaint myself with the real world. And you know what, it was amazing. Pedestrians weren’t just target practice, you could buy booze virtually anywhere and there was no stuffy, uptight attitude. The clubs were full of cool kids (kids being the operative word, jeez, they get younger and younger!), and there were more festivals than there were hipsters (although it was a close run thing). But, while Dubai is still some way off scaling the cultural heights of Europe or America, we have a lot to be proud of, with the café/ bar/restaurant/art and club scene all moving in the right direction. Summer still sucks harder than Devine Brown, but we’ll take sunshine and sand over freezing cold rain any day of the week. Disclaimer: the Monkey is clearly still high from his travels, normal service will be resumed next week!
