And so, after months of speculation, the line up for the Formula 1 parties has been unveiled, and never has the adage ‘something for everyone’ been truer. Dance fans have Armin Van Buuren on the Friday night, Pharrell will do the pop honours on Saturday, while organisers Flash have delved deep and booked rock and roll legends The Who to close out proceedings. Rocking out to Pete Townshend riffs while howling along to ‘My Generation’ is up there on the rock and roll bucket list. We’ve got the lowdown on those gigs and all the rest of this season’s happenings – word of warning, there are a lot – in this issue alongside the usual Infusion Magazine goodies. Andy

Groove On The Grass feat. Pan-Pot @ Emirates Golf Course
Now it is third year, this extremely switched on, well run event has brought the cream of the techno, tech-house and deep house world into the desert including Marc Romboy, Damian Lazarus, Ellen Allien and nearly Villalobos (we’ve still not forgiven you yet Ricardo). Whilst the evening ticked along nicely, it was still a little hot out to bring most people down early which was a shame as the local talent started to build a great backdrop for the night. Unlike some festivals, there is more than just the music to take in with art installations, silly games (oh hey, Beer Pong) and stalls to keep you happy until the main events. Stephan Bodzin (armed with his own synth guitar) took over deck duties from our own Deian around 11pm and kicked it up a notch as the big crowds started to arrive, playing out a great mix of driving, chunky tunes. Finally at 1am we were treated to a triumphant set by the new dahrlings of the Berlin scene Pan-Pot with Tassilo and Thomas looking like they were having a great time as they delivered their first ever set in the UAE. – Stephen Day

Looking Back White, Meydan Hotel
One of the most extravagant open air venues in the city, White Dubai opened again for business after the summer, and the sister club to the Beirut original did so in typical style. Despite a challenging door-queue process that merged media and booked tables with the clubbers, navigating our way to the top was easy enough. Once past the surreal Astroturf pathway and the overhead industrial network, you’re led to the VIP area, which is cosier than some we’ve been in. There’s no denying the star power of the club, with 360 views over Meydan Racecourse, the city and the central bar. The music, an up-tempo mix of house and RnB, was a blast, and peaked post midnight in conjunction with the psychedelic and retro-anime on the screens. Oh, and there were twirling circus performers, a performer in a cage and a quartet of dancers. A White opening done in typical over-the-top White style. – Ben Roberts
Twang @ Legends Sports Bar
Chelsea Plaza Hotel hosted Twang’s latest live music event and it was a card filled with local and international talent. Starting off proceedings were Rod Paris & Friends, who for a band that only started jamming 2 days prior, did well in producing a set filled with cover songs that had an intimate crowd tapping their feet and nodding their heads. Towards the end of their set the venue started filling out as MTV VMAI award winner Siddharth Basrur, took to the stage playing an acoustic set filled with material from his debut solo album Chasing Rain that had his Dubai based fans singing and bopping along. The event was a refreshing change of pace for the Infusion Crew and it was certainly fun to experience real live music on an intimate level. Props go out to Roots, Moonshine, F Croft & Ten Feet Under who saw the night out performing a mixture of original material and covers. We’ll certainly be back to support a talented local scene.

Superheroes feat. Dance Off Sound System @ Dek on 8
Once again, the Dek on 8 was bursting at the seams for another installment of Superheroes. Party instigators Dance Off Sound System were this week’s headliners, with the UK festival favourites knocking out beats and dance moves in their makeshift giant boxing ring as their crew of DJs and MCs worked their way through a bass friendly 4 hour set. The UAE crowd got into the spirit as well, although two local B’boys went a little too hard and got so involved in the battle they had to be pulled apart as a mini Cat-fight broke out, although this one was more handbags at dawn than Tyson vs Lewis.

Outlook Festival, Pula, Croatia
Hundreds of Dubai clubbers made the pilgrimage to Outlook festival in Croatia this Summer to party on the stunning Adriatic coast line in celebration of a fusion of bass fuelled sounds including dub, reggae, hip-hop, drum ‘n’ bass, garage and house. The festival took place across the mesmerising 19th Century Fort Punta Christo, a labyrinth of passageways including intimate and open spaces such as, a dungeon, courtyard, moat, clearing, beach and harbour side that docked the many frequented boat parties. The 7th season of the 6 day festival attracted 16,000 people from across the globe, including our party of bass fiends including Somalie (Superheroes), Woodle (Bassworx) and Ahmed Dubijad (Sunny Vibe Up). With over 300 artists spread over 12 stages & 48 Boat Parties, there was a huge spread of talent including Ms Lauren Hill, Daddy G, Mungos HiFi, Gentleman’s Dub Club, Zed Bias, D:Bridge, Earl Gateshead and Globalfunk regulars, Andy C, DJ Marky, Goldie, MC’s Lowqui, GQ & SP:MC.

Looking Back
Outlook Festival kicked off in spectacular style with Ms Lauren Hill testing her lung capacit in a truly mind blowing concert, set in a 2000-year old Amphitheatre that wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Gladiator. The ex-Fugees member who’s had mixed reviews of her performances of late, was forgiven for her tardiness as she delivered a flawless performance that confirmed why she’s earned a record breaking 5 Grammy Awards. Other standout artists of the festival were Mungos HiFi throwing down all tingz Reggae & Dub, who even had a stage dedicated to their extended crew and Sound System. Metalheadz rocked The Clearing stage with an epic history set that took you through a journey in Drum and Bass, while Friction, Andy C and S.P.Y’s sets had The Harbour side arena rocking on Day 3 until 6am. And a special shout out to The Mouse Outfit who brought their Manchester driven, Hip Hop infused flava live to The Beach arena.
Looking Back
For the very first time Dubai had its own representation at the festival in the form of the Something Big Boat Party which set sail for the final voyage of the festival. With a line up longer than a Sandance flyer, the 3 hours cruise was stacked with Catwalk Club season regulars such as Coki, Hatcha, Ant TC1, Icicle and DXB Resident DJ/Promoter PLO taking to the decks. The UAE heavy crowd formed an admirable motley crew and were still full of beans as Coki & Hatcha went back to back playing garage and dubstep, swiftly transitioning to PLO who played a tech/neurofunk Drum and Bass infused set followed by Ant TC1 who amped up proceedings throwing down a lot of material from his very own Dispatch Records label. Outlook has been a true experience, a place where ego is left at the door, people come to discover the latest cutting edge sounds, get intimate with their musical heroes and go home with more friends than they came. To everyone involved in making the festival happen we at Infusion Magazine salute you. – Vip Patel

Local News Pacha Ibiza Dubai announces launch date
After a year of speculation and rumour, Pacha Ibiza Dubai have announced they’re launching on Friday November 7 at the Madinat. Spread across three floors, the sister club to the Ibiza original will feature the Main Room, the Red Room and the much fabled Rooftop. Open 7 days a week, the main floor will combine PanAsian inspired cuisine, theatrical dancers and entertainers and some of the biggest house music DJs, while the Red Room will provide an alternative funk and nu-disco sound. Finally the redesigned rooftop has 2 bars, modern Moorish food from a raw bar and robata grill and a deep, soulful house soundtrack. And in a move that we applaud, the club have announced that local DJs will be a ‘strong focus’ for the club moving forward, but no DJ line ups – local or international – have been released as yet.

ALL LEAD TO
Warehouse Dubai are back with another strong line up for their October 16 date, with Route 94, Toyboy and Robin on their house line up. We caught up with the ‘My Love’ star to chat No.1s, Skream and his DJ weapons of choice Welcome to the city, what have other Djs told you about the city? I have heard it's quite over the top with regards to crazy hotels with super cars parked up outside. Where were you when you found out you had a No.1 hit, and how did you celebrate? I was at the Bugged Out festival on the Sunday. It seems weird but because I party at clubs most weekends I wanted to do something a little different to celebrate so the next night I went for a very special meal with my girlfriend. Who's been the most important person to your success, any mentors or Djs that have pushed/inspired you? I would say Skream has been important as he was the first to champion my early records, and more recently I have really got into Ricardo Villalobos. Dance music seems to be incredibly healthy at the moment, what's your take on it? I think that it's so easy to hear so much great music now and I think that people are blending styles a lot more. Boundaries seem to be merging between styles and new sounds are being born all the time.
How are your DJ skills, what's your preferred set up of choice? And what's working in your sets, how do you structure them? I use the Pioneer Nexus setup. I have started using 3 decks more recently so I mix on two and have a third for loops and vocals and FX. I find the amount of FX you can use on the Pioneer DJ mixer can change records you may have heard before into something new. And what can you tell us about Toyboy and Robin who are also on the same bill? I’ve not played with them yet but I’ve got a few of their tracks so I’m looking forward to it.
A tag team DJ duo, Toyboy & Robin bridge the house/RnB and sometimes tech divide, creating a unique sound. And it’s a sound that’s gaining them traction in the UK with a packed out October calendar featuring gigs at the Warehouse Project, London, and the 02 Academy in Newcastle. You’ll have heard their club monster ‘Feel It’ on the cooler dancefloors this year, and we’re looking forward to their dynamic debut for Warehouse Dubai.

Dubai’s techno scene has never had it so good, with Stereotype the latest night to fly the flag for the genre by booking Canadian/Berlin artist The Mole for their Friday 24 October date at Basement
The Mole began life in the mid-90s, mining subterranean
techno in Canada and creating a loyal and local following in Vancouver and Victoria. Real name Colin de la Plante, he was inspired by the loooong, cold winters in Montreal and the name and vision of The Mole came to life.
2006 saw him gain mainstream success, as he was picked up by Sven Vath, and his collaboration with Paddy from Cobblestone Jazz as the Smokin Posties started gaining serious traction.
But it was his release of ‘7 Inches of Love’ that announced
his arrival on the world stage, leading to further releases on cult label Wagon Repair, and also the birth of his own label Maybe Tomorrow, co-run by Jon Berry of Kompakt.
He’s remixed for the who’s who of the house and techno
world – Minlogue, Gui Boratto, Dan Ghenacia & Shonky and Michael Mayer – and is an occasional member of live techno outfit Cobblestone Jazz.
And he knows what makes the night a memorable one.
"First, good people make a good night for me. Even when the soundsystem is sh*tty, with the right crowd you still have a great time. People inspire me, I guess that is why I also like collaborating". With the Basement’s low ceilings, a clued up crowd and The Mole’s techno journey, we can safely say that everyone is in for a good night.
Stereotype feat. The Mole, Friday 24 October, The
Basement, 9pm-3am, Ladies and Guestlist free before 12 Midnight, Dhs100 after.
5 things you never knew about‌
The Mole
Disco
DUST Disco, funk and house champions DUST are back in action this month, and are once again cherry picking from Australia, as they’re bringing over vinyl junkie Shan Frenzie of Groove Therapy fame to play their October 16 throwdown‌
Welcome to the region, you've had a busy summer taking in America and the UK, what have been the highlights? I'm currently doing a four month tour around some of the greatest destinations in the world, so there have been so many highlights - and not all of them musically related. Although connecting with old and new friends in every city I go to has certainly made this trip incredibly special. It's amazing that in this internet age I can be friends with people on social media sites like Facebook who I have never met before - other deejays around the world or fans of my radio show. Being able to connect with these people in person has
been a blessing and everyone has made me feel extremely welcome in their home city. You're a 45s DJ, what advantage and disadvantage does that give you over other Djs? Well first and foremost I'm a DJ, and I actually use a variety of formats including digital. I'm a huge advocate of using what ever format you choose to its fullest potential - so even when I use a laptop (Traktor is my software of choice) I like to use all the looping, effects, and remixing capabilities it offers. However, right now I am enjoying the simplicity of using 45s (which are the small seven inch records). It's refreshing to strip the art of deejaying back to its essence: mixing and
programming. 45s are incredibly hard to play with because they can be hard to mix and each song only lasts three and half minutes or so. It's challenging, but as a DJ I work best when I am challenged. And how long have you spent crate-digging during your DJ years do you think? Days/weeks/ months? I've been collecting records since the late eighties. It's definitely an obsession, one that started when I was a young teenager - and now that I am fervently collecting 45s, I find myself re-buying songs that I might already own on a twelve inch format. It's been amazing to go record shopping throughout this trip in so many countries around the world. I have seen some amazing record stores, and it is interesting to see that some records are very common in one country yet are very hard to find in others. What tune are you still hunting for? And what's the most you'll pay for a slice of wax? I've always tried to not pay to much for records. A lot of fun in digging for records is finding them in some forgotten store for very cheap. Anyone can buy the most amazing records on Ebay very easily. I much prefer spending a few days walking the city streets, covered in dust
Grandmaster Flash personally asked for you to be his warm up DJ in Australia for 4 dates – that must have felt pretty special‌ Working with Grandmaster Flash was incredibly special. I grew up listening to his mixes and sets, and they still inspire me. As a DJ he has still continued to teach me. Grandmaster flash is indeed the party rocker. If you could go back in time, what decade would you most like to DJ in? Probably the early 80s, although I don't think it would be the time that matters but rather the location. I would have loved and sweat looking for records to have witnessed first hand in the most hidden places. the birth of House and Techno It gives each record I find its music in cities like New York own personal story. I can look back through my collection and or Detroit, or partaken in some remember exactly where I found of my favourite radio moments in Hip Hop such as listing to a particular record twenty the Latin Rascals, Rd Alert, years ago. Awesome Two. New York was As far as what tune I am such a hot bed of creativity in looking for? Well, there are so the 70s and 80s. I don't think many. It's limitless - although the world will ever see a musical right now I am looking for 90s period like that ever again. Hip Hop 45s. There were so many titles that were pressed DUST feat. Shan Frenzie but in such limited numbers in + David Craig & Megadon various countries. For instance Betamax, October 16, there are Hip Hop 45s that were Story Rooftop, 9pm-3am, used as promotional records for free entry. radio stations that you can only find in Germany. Festival attraction Just a few hours flight away from the city, India is a growing hub of electronic movement with established festivals like Sunburn in Goa gaining world wide acclaim. Joining the party is Magnetic Fields, a 3 day festival held in a 17th century palace in Rajasthan. And Ohm Records have got in in on the pre-party action, and are hosting a bass/hip hop throw down Munbir Chawla Festival Director
What's the ethos behind Magnetic Fields? Magnetic Fields is an event we are proud to showcase to the rest of the world demonstrating India’s vibrant and forward thinking creative community. Last year, attendees fell in love with the music, the audience, the space, the concept and most importantly, contemporary and ancient India nestled side by side in our little oasis of magic in the heart of the Rajasthani desert.
And who's on the line up this year, can you tell us? I can, but we're still waiting on a final answer from our proper 'headline.’ Internationally confirmed are DJ Vadim, Pawas, Begun, Dream Koala, Flava D, Graciela Maria and Zahed Sultan. How did you find the venue, a 17th century palace? By accident. It quite literally fell into our laps. A chance meeting, a mention of the festival and an excited Prince. We fell in love with it at first sight, and the rest is sort of history.
at Casa Latina on October 23 to raise the festival’s profile. We take a look at the headliners, WEN and Maga Bo, and also take a closer look at the December festival‌
And what should people expect if they fly over from Dubai for the 3 day festival? A festival in a palace in the middle of the Rajasthani desert! Programming focusses predominantly on alternative electronica but Magnetic Fields is more than just music. A lot of love is poured into the details, the food, design, hospitality. We offer two experiences, you can choose to live like the kings and queens in the palace or take to the sand with the Bedouins and camp under the stars. Magnetic Fields is a bubble lost in space and time.
2013 reviews We caught up with two festivalers from the opening event to get their on-the-ground experience…
Magnetic fields felt more like a journey rather than just a music festival. Travelling was easy from Dubai arriving to Jaipur which is 300 kms away from the festival located in Alsisar Mahal which is a village with a 600 year old palace. – Nabeel El-Dughailib The location, the vibe, the setting, the music... Magnetic Fields is unlike any other festival I’ve been to before. An intimate gathering the first year saw about 500 people attend. Set in a renovated palace that is several hundred years old, the venue gave the festival a truly magical feel. Beautiful lighting and décor and the architecture of the palace made the whole experience unique. – Camellia Bojtor
The line up Ohm have cunningly converted Casa
Latina’s second room into a separate space, giving the underground venue bigger capacity and the scope to host different sounds. Room 1 is all about the bass, with Essarai and Finlay Lefox on warm up for Tempa’s WEN, while the 2nd room is more on the hip hop, eclectic vibe with Makrodot and Adriano K opening up for Ninja Tune’s Maga Bo. Casa Latina, Thursday October 23, 9pm-3am, Dhs50 in advance Platinumlist.net.

Bur Dubai is bouncing to a new sound this season thanks to the launch of The Box, at the Raintree Rolla Hotel. They’ve chosen their residents wisely, with veteran hip hop master Rone Jaxx (pictured) heading up their Wednesday ladies night Kiss, while they’ve just launched new night Vintage every Saturday, with Rohann Nunez heading up the playlist. And they also have a house night on Fridays, with Radio 1’s Simon B dropping the best in deep house. If you live that end of town, or if you fancy a change from the norm, then think inside the box. facebook.com/boxdubai

Album Reviews... Hernan Cattaneo – Balance 26 House / balancemusic.com.au
There are two options when it comes to longevity. Do you carry on doing what you do (hopefully better than anyone else)? Or, do you change up your act/music and keep evolving and progressing with the trends? No need to guess what Argentine house star Hernan Cattaneo has based his long-running career on: peerless 4/4 beats, taking in melodic, driving house and techno. But what long running Compiltation series Balance does so well is offer an insight into an alternative DJ universe, one where DJs are encouraged to explore their record collection. Which means that CD 1 is full of eyebrow-raising oddities, no more so than the opening Boards of Canada track. From there, Cattaneo segues into Mano Le Tough, John Tejada, Spooky and several of his own more downtempo tracks and edits, creating a warm opening CD full of melody, rich bass and textured tones. In a word, it’s Balearic and sets the tone perfectly for CD 2 which is where unleashes his more tried and tested dancefloor weapons, including several cuts from himself and long term supporter Guy J. Same same, but different as we might say in Dubai. Hernan Cattaneo plays 0 Gravity on Thursday October 16

Matthew Charles – Out The Door (Infusion Records) House/Techno
I
Infusion.ae
Perhaps one of Dubai’s best known international DJs thanks to his summer residencies at Café Mambo Ibiza, Matthew Charles has finally made the move into production, and gets his first world wide release courtesy of Infusion Records. As anyone who’s heard him play at his packed boat parties will attest, Matthew has found his techno groove and his first EP is further proof. Opener ‘Out The Door’ is a late night tech-house groover, with chunky beats, delayed FX and a cheeky Josh Wink sample. It’s dancefloor friendly as it’s been tried and tested at his Never Get Out The Boat parties, but it’s also full of clever production twists and techniques, making sure the groove is always propelled onwards and upwards. Track 2, ‘Wasn’t’ is a more warped affair, with a lower BPM, a ping pongy bassline and a wigged out, after party vibe, perfect for warm ups or techier DJs that want to push things down and dirty. And with a 2nd EP already signed up for Infusion Records, the future looks very bright for this burgeoning producer.

On The Record
The second in our new series focused on the UAE’s record labels finds us sitting down with Megadon Betamax, who co-runs the Dubai arm of disco label Voyeurhythm
Voyeurhythm – Need to know Running since: 2009 Number of releases: 17 Genres covered: House / Techno / Disco / Boogie Main artists: Ben Sun / Tyson Ballard / Francis Inferno Orchestra / Freekwency / Megadon Betamax / Linkwood / Manpower Website: www.voyeurhythm.com
The best thing about running your own label is… Having creative control over what’s released and building a creative platform with talented friends. The worst thing is… Losing money on records (i.e. getting stuck with excess vinyl stock), admin and accounting. Plus the fact that the label is based between Dubai, Berlin and London and is a bit of a stretch sometimes. Recently, the turnaround times of manufacturing vinyl has been frustrating, as due to demand for pressing in Europe, turn around time is like 10 - 12 weeks which is crazy (and as a small label we don’t have big buying power like some). Our biggest seller is… On vinyl, VR03 Ben Sun’s ‘Salty Tears’ I believe, although our latest release, the Francis Inferno Orchestra album is going gangbusters. It sold out on pre-order so we’ve already had to order one repress with a second looking imminent. We’ve had support from… Laurent Garnier, Linkwood, Prins Thomas, Soul Clap, San Soda, Wolf and Lamb, Jacques Renault, LNTG, Trus’me, Mic Newman, Slow Hands, Osunlade, Gerd Jansen, Jozif, X-Press 2 etc... What does your label sound like? Back to basics real analog based house, drum machine techno and throw back 80s boogie vibes. The best online portal for us is… Juno seems to be where we have most success. How do you make yourself stand out? By pressing and releasing limited vinyl runs before digital releases drop. Also by maintaining our ‘sound’ (quality over quantity), not jumping on trends and by keeping our branding clean and simple. We’re also all very friendly and hilarious guys! You should keep an eye out for… Definitely the new Francis Inferno Orchestra album “A New Way of Living’, if you can find a copy, and Ben Sun’s new 12” which is due to drop very soon. Also look out for the mysterious Manpower! How does a smash hit happen? If we had a smash hit it would only ever be by some massive accident (i.e. our goal is just keep on releasing quality), not
something we give any thought to, might be nice. I guess for those looking for a smash you could pay to get big name remixers/artists on your label, bank loads of money on PR/ publicity or join a twerkin boy band perhaps... How involved are you with UAE producers, how can people get in touch with you? I work with RBMA Radio by helping produce their new Middle East based monthly radio show ‘Quarter Tone Frequency’, together with Dubai homeboy James Locksmith and some other guys from around the region. QTF showcases locally based talent on a international platform, so we’re always looking for great music to add to the show - please send music to info@ dustdxb.com. Aside from that, James and I also put on parties under the DUST banner, when and where we can. Voyeurhythm wise, to be honest we try and avoid demos these days – perhaps when our release schedule ramps up massively we can consider bringing more artists in, but for now, with our slow release schedule, it’s a mainly family affair.
And, to accompany the series, we’ve compiled our very own mix with one track from each of the labels, available to stream via our Soundcloud page, soundcloud.com/infusion-magazine Infusion Magazine – DXB On The Record Andy Buchan – LRB – Infusion Records Francis Inferno Orchestra – Ellingfort Road – Voyeurhythm Records Pryor – Fela Shuffle – Centric Music The Linguinis – If I Was – Ark To Ashes Arnav S – Subkraft (Sasse Mix) - one28 Recordings Florian Kruse – The Green Wine Experience (Raxon remix) – audio tonic Records Smokingroove – Message To The Playas – Illuminati DJ Sneak – The Party Of All – Gold Drama Records Greg Stainer – Back Home – Stained

INDIE CLUB You’ll know Marko Smokingroove as the awardwinning Dubai DJ who’s rocked sets at Sandance, Nasimi, 360 and more. He’s now added another string to his bow, and become an indie band manager. Infusion Magazine finds out how that happened, and what’s next for the him and the 21 Outs…
Congratulations on the new career move – what made you make the move into management? I’ve been DJing along with some production for the best part of 20 years now, I wanted to take on a new project that would really give me a challenge and start thinking outside the box in a new area of the music industry. It’s not something that happened over night, I’ve been thinking about it for a while but was waiting for the right opportunity to arise. What made you fall in love with the band – did you see dollar signs flashing? How would you sum them up, and where do you want them to go? It was actually my wife who put me in touch with the lead singer Philip Cassidy, she knew him from her town in Ireland where I’ve been spending most of my summers on my private escapes. I met with Philip in a small local pub while his sister was performing and we got chatting, there was a natural connection and mutual passion for music as a whole, so naturally we got on famously. Fast forward several pints of Guinness and a brief history lesson into the band, I did some research and checked out their music and live performances and offered to take on the band as a new project. And what does it involve at this stage for you? do you see it as a long term career move? We all knew it would be a tall order with them in being in Ireland and me in Dubai, but we agreed to focus on their production and getting them signed to the right indie labels. I’m currently working on bringing them over to Dubai for some live shows as the Irish market in Dubai is a fairly large one as they’ve just finished touring the festival scene all over Ireland. The long term goal is to get the band some major signings and then see where it takes us from there. Naturally we’re aiming at chart success, the boys are young, fresh and very authentic, I predict very big things for these guys. Who’s next, are you looking to bolster your roster? Not at this stage, I want to keep the same focus on the band and see where it takes us, no sense in spreading ourselves too thin. Plus I still have Smokingroove which is busier than ever, so I’m spinning enough plates as it is. www.youtube.com/21outs

Adam Baluch If you’ve not heard live looper/singer songwriter Adam Baluch before, you’re missing out. Big time. We caught up with 0 Gravity’s Saturday resident to find out what makes him tick
My first musical influence was… JS Bach, Handel, Haydn, Carol Cymbala (Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir). The last pop star I liked was… Gwen Stefani. My sound is best described as… Alternative soul. Best piece of advice you’ve received? Do what you do best… Get a loopstation, Bro! What’s your musical guilty pleasure? A lot of Scandinavian music usually hits the spot for me. For some reason they got it going on over there. The best band in Dubai is… The Sri Lankan band at Club Africana on Bank Street is always awesome. So are The Boxtones and Boz Boz. Lamest claim to fame? Someone once asked me: Are you trying to be Jack Sparrow? When I make it, the one thing I want on my rider is… I think that definitely depends on where I am gigging! But for now if all my mates could be there, including those that couldn’t afford a ticket and want to see the show, that would do it for me for sure. My musical motto is… Feel it, write it, tweak it, own it. Best gig you’ve played? Lionel Richie. I opened for him at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre in April. Incredible. And the worst? I won’t say what country it was but I was invited over to play for a month because they thought I would really kick it over there. It’s one thing if a few people don’t get what you’re doing with a loopstation…. but when a whole country doesn’t get it, then it’s time to get a flight back home! Weirdest working holiday of my life! Best lyrics of all time? Bill Hicks. “Today a young man on acid realised that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the weather.” Drift featuring Adam Baluch, every Saturday, 0 Gravity, www.0-gravity.ae facebook.com/adambaluch
DJ Booth: Trey French
We sat down with French DJ Clement Serge AKA Trey French who recently walked away with the short mix prize at the Pioneer DJ Championships‌
One thing you might not know about me is... I am also a producer, under the name of Zajazza. From Latin funk to French touch, I’ve been producing music for different bands and TV. My worst ever job was… Managing invoices for a company, being on a desk is not my thing. My favorite ever record is… Superfly by Curtis Mayfield. It’s a soul album, with incredible production, incredible voice and guitars. So good! DJing is much like… Cooking! I always compare a DJ set to a good meal. It has to be tasty, crusty sometimes, intense. It’s all about sharing an energy with the crowd, to have fun with great tunes. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Very interesting, different styles of music, some great venues. I arrived recently here, but I am very excited to be part of this scene. I’m really proud of… My international career. I’ve been making music in Brazil, Ethiopia, all over Europe, and the States. Now the show must go on here in Dubai. What track could you drop in every set? I would go with ‘Get Lucky’ from Daft Punk, this is a great tune, and they are pushing the French artists to the top. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Making the crowd go crazy in a stadium in Brazil, in front of 6,000 persons alone on stage with 2 turntables. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Cheese, I could it cheese all day (the good ones). If you could DJ in any decade... It would be right now! I never say things like “it was better before”. We have access to all the great music that has been made during the last century and access to technology. All we have to do is use all this assets to create our own era! If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… DJ Kentaro. We don t play the same kind of music, and being around a guy like him, you really have to step up your game! I’m not a politician but… I realize while traveling that we are all the same in this world, we have all the same needs, things we love, things we hate, but some powerful politicians are trying to separate us. It won’t happen. soundcloud.com/zajazza

Weird News... Dig your own hole
Picture the perfect getaway vehicle – it’s a Lambo isn’t it. Or wait, maybe a high powered bike to navigate through busy streets. Or maybe, as one 22 year old man from Coalville in the UK thought, it’s a 44 tonne digger. Leicestershire Police said the man called them in the early hours of the morning to say he had stolen the bulldozer. A helicopter was drafted in to help and officers managed to stop the yellow-and-black machine on the A511 around Coalville, near Leicester, at 7am.
WEIRD PIC “$160k diamond traded for $20 of weed”
Turtle recall
The news headline in America last week when an UPS employee stole a package containing the jewel and traded it for an eighth. Doofus.
There’s no shortage of goods that can be smuggled – drugs, counterfeit goods, alcohol, cigarettes. And turtles, it would appear. Ontario resident Kai Xu was charged with smuggling, illegal trading and exporting when he was found to have more than 50 turtles strapped to his body, giving a whole new meaning to the term turtle head.

DXB Hip Hop Academy to launch
In a city not short of urban DJs all looking to get their slice of #arabswag, one enterprising company is launching a new allinclusive service. The DXB Hip Hop Academy will take in raw, street-wise recruits and pump out chiseled, rhyme spitting warriors. Course tutors, Mosque Def and Fatwa Joe said they spotted a gap in the market. ‘There are lots of wannabe artists out there, but we take that raw talent and create identikit, personality free hip hop stars,’ they said. ‘We’ll get them record deals with minor labels, we’ll get them their own Soundcloud/Facebook/Instragram page and buy thousands of followers, and then we’ll get them that prestige Sunday night residency playing Rihanna and Pitbull. There are already a lot of personality-free DJs in Dubai, but we’re hoping to add to those numbers in the coming months.’
Dubai club re-launches for the 6th time in 6 weeks – ‘We’ll try not to f*** it up this time’ *

Cool We pit two of South Africa’s funniest men, Rob Van Vuuren and John Vlismas against each other ahead of their House of Afrika Comedy Jam on October 17
JOHN
The funniest word is…
ROB
Smegma. You know it is, Twelvety. technical and rude. The best heckle I’ve heard is… wish I’d never had you kids.’ A lady who just screamed ‘I mom used to say that to me. “why?” My Always messed with my flow. John Vlismas vs Rob Van Vuuren Have you ever injured yourself at work?
Yes, I cracked some ribs During an opening sequence on the 1st night of a show once.
Yes. I shared an office with a designer once and we used to ambush each other with stationary projectiles. After a particularly effective strike I made a hasty retreat into a pole with my kneecap. I broke it into three pieces. My knee, not the pole. Designers are dangerous.
What’s the best insult you could give to each other? John looks like a dwarf dipped in a bucket of pubic hair. Dubai + loads of money + architecturally ambitious/ dubious = Moroder pyramid. How do your attempts to second-guess his designs look, it sounds like it would have been right at home in Dubai… Simon Coates: They don’t at all, the opposite in fact. Well, when I say the opposite, my hat goes off to Harold Faltermeyer who actually sat down and created a pretty amazing painting of a pyramid in the desert. Not all the stuff on show is directly about the Moroder pyramid, or what it might have looked like. Some of the work is about the idea that the project might have got built in the first place, as the tale kind of sounds like an urban myth. Therefore there are a couple of pieces that are fairly conceptual. But there are also other pieces that act as a kind of tribute to Moroder, like the DJ mixes and the Shusei Nagaoka prints. I still struggle to call the project an exhibition because it’s taken on a life of its own and it seems to sit somewhere between a tribute and an installation.
Have you tried to dig into the history of the rumoured Moroder pyramid out here, how far did you get? I have an email from a Moroder collaborator that fleshes out the story a little. Pete Bellotte (who wrote the Donna Summer hits with Moroder) wrote to me to let me know he actually saw progress at the time. The email is in the show. I’ve read around half a dozen interviews with Giorgio Moroder that mention the pyramid but it’s all very fleeting which gives the whole thing that sense of mystery and leaves it open to interpretation, and I quite like that. There are a lot of different strands to this exhibition, what's the best way to sum up what you're trying to achieve? I wanted to put together something that wasn’t simply a collection of artwork stuck on walls. We see enough of that in Dubai, so the plan with this project was always to make it different from other art shows. However, as it took shape I realised that this might not be an exhibition at all, which is why I call it a project. Someone recently pointed out that the whole thing could be open ended and finish up being my life’s work. What’s more important to me is that the project appeals to people’s imaginations and perhaps
might kickstart thoughts of their own, in some kind of creative direction. For myself, I much prefer to see a collection of work that stops me in my tracks than one that is passive.
And what are you most excited by in the show? That is a very difficult question to ask because the work on show is so diverse and works on differing levels. I must admit I was gobsmacked when I first listened to The Broca Ensemble’s version of 'I Feel Love' – the fact that they’d put so much care and effort into it was really brilliant. That said, recruiting Harold Faltermeyer alongside LuckyPDF in some ways underscores what this project is about; a Hollywoodbased superstar record producer alongside one of the most interesting artist collectives in London gives the whole thing a perfect balance. I should add that I asked Giorgio Moroder’s manager if Giorgio could actually take part. He said he was too busy but he gave the whole thing his blessing.

What's your strongest Moroder memory or moment? I actually remember seeing the Electric Dreams film at the cinema. Or I think I do, I must have been quite young. And it was quite possibly on a doublefeature with Ghostbusters.

get your kit off The Monkey was never blessed with money when I was growing up – why would I be, I’m a monkey, durr-brain. But I had to make do with what I had, I made things work and I persevered. Which got me where I am today, writing angry fortnightly diatribes for you witless animals. But I digress… You don’t need to have a Versace dress to be a supermodel, you don’t need to have a good voice to be a pop star, and you most certainly don’t need Dhs50,000 of DJ goodies in your DJ booth, especially when you’re playing a nightly residency in a restaurant. Seriously, dude – what are the latest mixer and 2 space-age decks going to do for your mix when you’re a) playing Youtube rips and b) they’re Youtube rips of Rihanna. Sell the decks, get in an iPod packed with music and hire a Monkey – I know a few who might fancy it – to press shuffle. You is welcome.
