I’ve been here 10 years (yikes!) and it used to be that a good, must-do event came along every month. Then it became a couple a fortnight, then weekly, and now – no joke – it’s nightly. The weekends are swamped with big nights out, while thanks to Cavalli, Sundays are now buzzing with Deep Dish, Laidback Luke and Erick Morillo all confirmed. And, should your liver allow it, you could no doubt hit up 7 different clubs in a week with international acts and get your rocks off. Which all means that we’ve got a record breaking monster 132 page issue, as we try to give you the lowdown on all that goodness. Oh, and if you do take up the n7-nightsa-week challenge, let us know how you get on. Andy

Sensation @ Meydan
The hype was unreal, and the sniping about the line up intense. So how would the first ever outdoor Sensation play out? The event sold out the day before, meaning 15,000 people – all dressed in white – came face to face with the stunning Audio-Visual production. The stage lit up the night sky with everything from acrobatics, LEDs, giant faces and enough pyrotechnics to make Guy Fawkes green with envy. It looked and sounded stunning. While the line-up might have been missing a true ‘headline’ act, teenage sensation Martin Garrix stepped up to the stage and dropped a mix of electro and commercial including his top hit ‘Animals’ to a big reaction. For house heads, the other acts on the night, Hard Rock Sofa, Roger Sanchez and AN21 & Max Vangelli provided the perfect mix, but for those with an appetite for something other than house might have left wanting more. Not that the majority seemed to mind as the night progressed, and the first outdoor Sensation Source of Light blasted a lasting impression on the sold out crowd. Could this be the Source of a new standard of events in Dubai? – Sam Moult
Looking Back
Fred Perry Sub-Sonic feat. Jagwar Ma @ Dubai International Marine Club Putting on a live band in Dubai is a perilous business at the best of times, so big ups to Fred Perry for having the cojones to bring out Aussie indie-electro three piece Jagwar Ma. They’ve had a whirlwind few years since the release of their debut album ‘Howlin’, with Noel Gallagher joining their fan club, while they’ve picked up big festival slots across the world including Glastonbury this year. Taking to the stage after midnight in front of a cool but up for it crowd, the trio re-worked and beefed up their big-hitters like ‘The Throw’ and ‘Man I Need,’ at one point getting the floor and stage bouncing in party unison. Sweaty and moshed out, they left an hour later to fizzing feedback and hands in the air. Earlier, Kuwait-based support act Zahed Sultan dropped a warm techno set abetted by live guitar, setting the stage nicely for Jagwar Ma. More of this please, Fred Perry!

Sonic Sessions feat. Liquid Soul @ Chi, Domeland
Although more commonly associated with the beaches of India or the forests of Europe, Psy-trance has a strong following in Dubai and one of the biggest names in the scene is Nicola Capobianco, AKA Liquid Soul. The Swiss national’s productions also feature heavily in the sets of Trance DJs due to their energy and diversity and it was this enthusiasm that Liquid Soul brought to Domeland at The Lodge. The evening wasn’t just about Psy-Trance though, with promoter Ravelations teaming up with Sonic Sessions for an evening of quality genre-spanning music. Audio-Tonic resident Raxon was on the decks when we arrived, cranking out some moody tech-house as the venue filled up, giving us time to check out the colourful patterned tent set up over the dancefloor. Taking to the decks, Liquid Soul immediately turned up the energy and what followed was two hours of pumping music, spanning Liquid Soul’s back catalogue but also throwing in some great progressive and uplifting trance tracks to keep things fresh. The enthusiastic crowd were also treated to a great fire-twirling show, and Liquid Soul & Zyce’s ‘Anjuna’ made it seem like we were really at the famous beach, minus the sand between the toes. – Matt Zaharias

Plus Minus feat. Stimming and Edu Imbernon @ Level 41
The +- Sessions guys were back for another house party at Level 41 with heavyweights Stimming and Edu Imbernon on musical duty. Swimming proved why he is such hot property at the moment by laying down an expertly crafted live set which set the tone perfectly for Edu to follow and bring the loyal, clued up crowd to boiling point begging for one last tune, well after the 3am finish. And with Paco Osuna and Alex Niggeman next up for Plus Minus (and Ben Klock in December), the party is quickly turning into a must-do event.
DUST feat. Mr Thing @ Music Room
From the off, there was an excellent vibe, with good people there for the music. Regional acts Malikah and The Narcycist absolutely killed it, as did Wissam from Ohm Records on the Mic – mad skills! Mr Thing, as you’d expect from an ex DMC Champion, was on point, dropping killer hip hop tracks from the likes of Talib, Mos Def, Common. And his scratch routine into the start of a Tribe Called Quests ‘Check The Rhyme’ was out of this world. Mr Thing was awesome and ting!

A to Zinc
Ahead of his double header with EZ at Warehouse Dubai on November 28, we caught up with ex DnB DJ Zinc to talk ‘crack house’, pirate radio and why Estonia is where it’s at…
Welcome back to the city, always a pleasure – you're on the same bill as EZ, will you be comparing DJ notes, looking at how he mixes and blends? I’ve played alongside EZ loads of times, and it's always a pleasure watching how much energy he has, and how he puts his sets together. He’s a master! You made the move from Drum and Bass to 'crack' house a while ago, have you had any regrets about making the switch? None at all! We're running a feature on when DJ Gigs go bad, there must have been a few painful moments with the crowd when you first made the switch… A couple of people were disappointed because they were expecting Drum and Bass, but I would have been surprised if that didn’t happen to be honest.
Do you think you were a bit ahead of the curve with 'crack' house and your cross genre sets given the rise and rise of the UK bass scene? I dunno – I just got bored of D’n’B and house was the area that interested me at the time. You were a DJ with Rinse FM when it was pirate, what memories do you have of those days? I love pirate radio, but it’s much better now it’s legal - same freedom to play what you want but you’re no longer in a squat! You also went to illegal raves as your first taste of dance music – can that spirit of rave ever return do you think? I think the warehouse parties in east London recently have the same kind of energy. Some of the festivals have a similar vibe to the early illegal raves. You've said before that you sometimes have to play safe tunes when you DJ newer cities – is that still the case, and how do you think Dubai will rate in advance? I can’t remember saying that - in the past few years I’ve become more selfish with what I play, I just play what I wanna hear regardless of where I am!
What cities and parties have surprised you recently? Tallin in Estonia was great – I played 89-94 rave/jungle and it was really good. And London never disappoints! And what's in store when you play in Dubai? A mixture of bass music genres, mainly house tempo but encompassing whatever feels right...

We have tickets to give away, head to infusion.ae
A year after its scheduled opening, Pacha Ibiza Dubai is finally open to the public. Reported to have cost Dhs70million, and with 6 bars, a hydraulic dancefloor, 3 rooms, and a 2,000 capacity, it’s the most anticipated club launch in the Middle East. We First question – why has it taken a spoke to the club’s GM year to launch? Todd Lunger a few days It’s Dubai, things go a little slower in We wanted to make sure we before the launch to get Dubai. got it right, we’re still making some the inside track last minute touch ups even now, and bringing a bit more of the spirit of Ibiza to Dubai.
How have the soft openings gone? They’ve been massive. We were doing training, and people just don’t understand that we’re still not at capacity – we had 900 people last Thursday, and we went on a door hold at 12.30 and there 200 people standing out front wanting to get in.
There’s a lot of goodwill for the club in the city… There is, there’s a lot of positivity. People are excited about the club, which doesn’t happen all the time. What have been the biggest challenges in the last year? There’s a lot of hoops you have to go through, licensing has to be in place – all the DTCM permits are in place, the CID have done their stuff, civil defence. What was renovating the main room like – before it was Trilogy and had a Cathedral-like huge dome, that hadn’t been touched for years. The smell was pretty bad the morning after I remember… It smelt pretty funky, I’ll be honest. We ripped out the cage balls, the big dome, all the old carpet. The only thing we didn’t touch was the outside shell, the inside was completely gutted. Could you put a figure on how much you spent? A lot. It’s a good chunk of change.
We’re not going to spend 100,000 Euros a week on DJ talent, because we’ll burn ourselves out
Is it comparable to a launch in Las Vegas where you used to work? It’s right on up there with a Las Vegas night club, which is something to say. I’ve not seen anything like this in Dubai before. Who are your competition? Pretty much all the nightlife and restaurants around the city are our competition. We have to gain the goodwill from the guests. Once people come in, they’ll want to stay. I typically like to work with other venues, and help them out and vice versa. We work with the beach clubs like Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE and XL Beach Club as they operate during the day, so we have good relationships with them. Some clubs work hard to work against other clubs, but we’re trying to make it all work. If we have an off night, we’ll push their venue and vice versa. And how’s the music programming going to work? The whole venue is house music. The Main room will be mainstream house. It won’t be full on David Guetta, but it will be recognizable house music. That’s where the headliners will be. If you heard some cool stuff in Ibiza this summer, you’ll hear it here in the club.
The Red Room will be more on the funky side – Disco, NuDisco, quirky stuff, the same as the Funky Room in Pacha Ibiza. And the Rooftop will be deep, soulful house. It’ll be very chilled for dinner, with Tapas, Moorish food and shisha and then pick up. We’re going to have similar nights to Pacha Ibiza, so Pure Pacha, Insane, Flower Power so we’ll have a lot of cool activations. We’re also looking to work with a lot of local artists, to really be the new version of Ibiza. So many DJs started in Pacha Ibiza and became superstars and big boys, and we’re looking to do something very similar with our GCC artists. There are a lot of talented people here. How big will your international guests be? We have quite a few of our island friends coming over to play in the coming weeks. We really want to have DJs playing good music – it’s hard to have a festival DJ in here, we can’t have 5,000 people standing in front of them. So we’re really focusing on quality music. We’ll
have some good sized names coming through, but we won’t go down the Van Buuren, Tiesto route. It wouldn’t do justice for the guests that are coming. We’re not going to spend 100, 000 Euros a week on DJ talent, because we’ll burn ourselves out, it’s not sustainable. Our passion is music and art, and we have the show and the restaurant as well. Is there a pressure to go commercial or hip hop to get the launch money back? No hip hop. Every time a club goes hip hop, they have six months to a year left. It’s worldwide. In Las Vegas it’s the same thing.
There’ll be no outside promoters, it’s all in-house. We have a team in place, we have a big network to pull people in and raise awareness. We’re not even open, and we’re at 32,000 Likes on Facebook, it’s all organic. How big is the guestlist for the opening night, what sort of bribes have you been taking? It’s amazing, my phone has gone off several times during the interview with requests. People will do whatever it takes to get in. We sold out all of our tables the second day after we announced the launch. As for the guestlist, we don’t have room, they can come another night, I don’t know how people get a hold of my number! How involved are the Ibiza branch as you’re the only Pacha venue to have Ibiza in the name apart from the original? We collaborated from start to finish with them, we’ve worked on the bookings with them, the entertainment – we bounce a lot of stuff off each other. Who are the Pacha Ibiza Dubai crowd? Our crowd is all over the place – there are people who have just turned 21 who want to go out and party, and up to all ages. We had some guests in their early 70s who walked past and told me about partying in Pacha Ibiza when they were younger. We have a pretty broad range, and we have lots of different music options. Do you think you’ll raise the bar for clubbing in the city? I hope we do raise the bar, and I hope it gets other people competitive instead of just resting on their laurels. There needs to be some depth to the nightclubs around the city, I don’t feel the spark when I walk in sometimes. There needs to be something more than just sparklers when you buy a bottle.
No hip hop. Every time a club goes hip hop, they have six months to a year left. It’s worldwide
First look
The first thing you’re greeted with is a mass of foliage, it looks like a Wookie’s love cave. Beyond that, and you’re into the Main Room, a stunning red/cream/black concoction with warm textured surfaces, a black vinyl roof and more curves than a Victoria’s Secret model. Oh, and the vinyl roof pulsates when the music gets pumping. It looks amazing even in the daylight, with a huge curved LED screen above the space-age DJ booth. The second floor overlooks the main room, with plenty of VIP tables, but also lots of dancing/drinking room. Trilogy’s hard to find 2nd room has been completely re-modelled, with a soundproof entrance opening up to the club’s best rave space. And the rooftop is stunning – 2 bars, cooking stations, incredible shisha, and more space age DJ booth action, not to mention ability to turn up/down the music for each table and section. Resident DJs to have been announced so far include main man Pierre Ravan, Ejaz, Stu Laurie and Rick Prior, with more to be announced. They might just have the best jobs in the city at the moment.

The sound of the
underground Never before, have there been so many quality events week in, week out. Promoters and clubbers are spoilt for choice, and it’s amazing. But the one thing the scene is missing is a weekly home, a regular spot that you know will offer quality beats, good people and good times. Looking to follow in the footsteps of iBO, Alpha and Trilogy is The Basement, a dark, compact club in Tecom that’s making a bid to become the city’s underground haven.
Veteran Dubai DJs Marko Smokingroove and David Craig (both ex Nasimi and Sandance residents) have overseen the club’s bookings, and helped shape the club’s sound. Secret Circle Mondays feature Michka, Aidin Karami and Maks playing an underground mix of house and tech-house, while Wednesdays host Catch, which got off to a cracking launch, and features some of Dubai’s best house DJs including KayTek, Rishi, Pro Moe, Eric Francis and more on rotation. Alex Niggeman House party providers Plus Minus are back with another double header booking, with techno titan Paco Osuna joined by German house DJ Alex Niggeman. We caught up with Alex ahead of his November 13 gig
The last time I came to Dubai I thought… Hopefully, there won't be that much wind, as there was the first time I came here. I should have played at 360, but the waves were hitting the venue so hard the event needed to be moved. Plus, I was thinking again, how impressive this place is with all its amazing buildings and sights. The last time I loved my job was… This second... there is no better job! The last time I complained about my job was… When I stuck in Casablanca Airport for 24 hours, a few weeks ago! The last time I met Paco Osuna was… What a coincidence. As far as I remember, at the place, where I am answering these questions right now, Amsterdam Dance Event! A few years ago we were playing together at Studio 80. The last time I met a DJ idol was… Today at ADE when I ran into Laurent Garnier. The last time I listened to non dance music was… This morning for breakfast. I usually listen to non-electronic music all the time, when not working. Very inspiring, by the way. The last time I paid for a night out was… Last weekend at Berghain. The last time I stayed up all weekend was… A loooooooonog time ago, when I was 18 or 19, I guess. Doesn't mean, that I'm becoming old, but 2 nights/days in a row being awake isn't possible, when traveling for gigs every weekend and being in a rush! The last time I lied was… I never lie. (Now). The last time I laughed out loud was… Yesterday, when meeting my best friend again after 2 months. Plus Minus feat. Alex Niggeman & Paco Osuna, Thursday November 13, Level 41, Media One Hotel, 9pm-3am

He’s young. Like outrageously, 'where did my youth go, I wasn’t DJing in clubs, flirting with models at 15', that sort of young. He’s currently 19, and first burst on the scene in 2010 when he played Spanish club Kapital.
At 17 – Seventeen! – he was anointed the youngest resident DJ in Pacha’s history, while also securing gigs at Blue Marlin and Space.
He played the mammoth Ultra Music Festival last March in Miami, and then signed as the resident DJ at Hakkasan in Las Vegas, hosting DJs like Steve Aoki, Deadmau5, Laidback Luke and more. He’s also played at Coachella, EDC and Tomorrowworld. All before he’s hit the ripe old age of 20.
Oh, he was also a near pro skateboarder and snowboarder in his teens, but decided to concentrate on music instead. We think he made the right decision.
He’s a music maker as well, with his work snapped up by Interscope Records, Big Beat and Spinnin’, while he’s worked alongside Tiesto, The Black Eyed Peas and Fedde Le Grand.
Occupy Sundays feat. Danny Avila, Cavalli, Sunday November 16, 10pm-3am.

After sold-out events in the most prestigious Clubs in Miami, Cannes, Cap D'Adge and others, the world-famous PRESTIGE party series nally arrives in Dubai in one of the city’s most prominent nightclubs, Movida Dubai. Miami cool meets urban chic with the launch of PRESTIGE SATURDAYS on November 8th. Gracing the stage of PRESTIGE SATURDAYS on November 15th is the next big thing in urban S music for anyone that knows the urban music scene - Atlanta born K-Camp, performing his hit single "Cut Her Off", also for the very rst time in UAE. And on the 1's and 2's: DJ E-Feezy (YMCMB/Heavy Hitters). The unique high-class urban label party started in January 2012 in the Heart of South Beach. Sundance events have not one, but two big hitters as they’re bringing Egyptian trance stars Aly & Fila to town on November 20, while cheese-fest Mixtape Rewind returns on November 21 with a who’s who of 90s pop history…
TRANCE NATION > > > Aly Amr Fathalah (Aly) and Fadi Wassef Naguib (Fila) are a hugely popular Egyptian trance duo brought up on the classic sounds of Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren. They first went international in 2002 when they signed to German label Euphonic Records, with Tiesto and Van Dyk among the first wave of DJs to pick it up and help make it go global. They’ve consistently charted in the DJ Magazine Top 100 poll, hitting number 19 in 2012, while their excellent debut album Rising Sun showcased their characteristic euphoric sound. The duo have played a number of important home-town gigs, including the Echo Temple in Sharm El Sheikh for their 200th issue of their radio show, Future Sound of Egypt. And they’ll be bringing their uplifting trance to the Emirates Golf Course open-air venue on Thursday November 20. Tickets are Dhs180. MIXTAPE REWIND < < < The 90s. A riot of cargo trousers, Global Hypercolour T-shirts, dungarees, smiley faces, Britpop and Tony Blair. And, you aren’t a true 90s kids unless you remember Peter Andre, other than for being Jordan’s ex, British boy band 5ive and all girl band B*witched. Luckily for you, they’re all coming to town on Friday November 21 for the next installment of retro festival, Mixtape Rewind. Get down to ‘Mysterious Girl,’ go ‘oh yeah, I remember this’ as 5ive run through ‘Slam Dunk (Da Funk)’ and the rest of their 20 million selling back catalogue, and sing along as B*witched take you on their ‘Rollercoaster.’ Oh, and fancy dress is encouraged, so dig out those cargo pants. Support comes from cheesepusher Tim Cheddar, and tickets for the Emirates Golf Club event are Dhs275.

History of House
A Guy Called Gerald Cult electronic party Analog Room are celebrating their 2nd birthday, and have a massive run of shows to celebrate. A Guy Called Gerald headlines on November 20 with another 5 hour live epic, Theo Parrish on the November 27, before Derrick May touches down on December 4. So we thought it fitting to interview them all and get their History of House ahead of their Dubai dates. First up, ‘Voodoo Ray’ star and live techno don, A Guy Called Gerald…
What was the first record you bought/played? The soundtrack to Star Wars the week it came out. You are an inspiration for thousands, but who were your inspirations when you started out? You must be aware that when I started out there was no such thing as house music. I could give a list… Al-naaflysh – ‘Hashim’ Love Bug Srarski – ‘Amityville’ The Whispers – ‘And The Beat Goes On’ Arthur Baker – ‘Breakers Revenge’ The B Boys – 2 3 break What's the one track from when you first started Djing that you can drop today? I could play anything from them now. I don't think I am the same as other DJs. How do you keep your sound fresh and up-to-date when tastes and genres change year by year? Seems to me tastes and genre changes week by week... I just do my thing, producers don't have to follow DJ rules. How much has changing DJ technology affected what you do? Put it this way... I am the hardware. The way I do my thing is the software. Everything else – computers and records – are just tools for me. Which dancefloors do you prefer - now or then? I prefer the 1982 dance floors. If a modern day DJ/producer had to play you in a film, who would it be and why? I am not really that aware of modern DJs. The best change to dance music in your career has been... I think it's still on its way. The worst change to dance music in your career has been... The fact that most people can't dance to dance music anymore. Dance music in 2044 will be... Will be cheesy trance music that has nothing to do with where it originally came from... Analog Room feat. A Guy Called Gerald, Analog Room, Q Underground, Thursday November 20, 10pm-3am

No one can hear you scream in space…
Movies said no one can hear you space, so it must be true. But NASA, the clever bods that they are, have just released recordings from space on their SoundCloud page. NASA put up special instruments which recorded electromagnetic vibrations on the Voyager space probe and converted that into actual sound. The recordings include the sounds of Saturn’s rings, Neptune, Jupiter and Uranus as well as what Earth would sound like millions of kilometres away. soundcloud.com/nasa

Album Reviews... Caribou – Our Love
Electronic / soundcloud.com/caribouband/
Where once Canadian producer Caribou stumbled across dancefloor gold while making complex, obtuse and quite beautiful electronic music, with his fourth album he’s honed his skills and planted Our Love firmly on the dancefloor. Lead single ‘Can’t Do Without You’ and follow up ‘Our Love’ rumble with intent, and have been hammered by a huge range of DJs over the summer, while the Tale of Us and Mano Le Tough remix of ‘Can’t Do Without You’ became an Ibiza anthem. Elsewhere, there are plenty of typical Caribou moments: ‘Mars’ is Caribou chanelling Four Tet, ‘Second Chance’ is woozy, synth heavy drone pop while ‘Silver’ is a downtempo slice of melancholic genius. Rich, rewarding and complex, it’s very easy to fall in love with ‘Our Love.’
Joris Voorn – Nobody Knows Electronic I
www.facebook.com/jorisvoorndj
Vibrant, warm and supple, Nobody Knows is the third album from Dutch DJ and producer Joris Voorn, and by far his best. Panoramic and cinematic, each track radiates with melody, blending a techno feel with live music energy. Perhaps the best way to sum up its sound is to describe it as Joris Voorn remixing Sigur Ros, or Boards of Canada dropping Molly and capturing the moment in Technicolor glory. The beat-less ‘The Monk’ sets things up nicely, a fizzing, buzzing and analogue drone that reverberates into the start of ‘A House’ feat. Kid A on vocals. A glassy slice of pop, it’s constantly on the edge of breaking into a full on beat blitz, but is stronger for the restraint shown, as it ebbs and flows. There are plenty of dancefloor moments as well: ‘Ringo’ was rinsed by every DJ worth their weight in Tequila, while Matthew Dear and Voorn team up for the mournful ‘Homeland,’ which will work for after hours sets. Harmonic, melodic and equally at home on the decks as the headphones, Nobody Knows is an electronic album that everyone should get acquainted with.

In 1979, Scratch burnt down his beloved Black Ark studio in Kingston, Jamaica to rid himself of the negative energies surrounding it. ‘Every once in a while we must also burn down our own Arks in pursuit of a more positive existence. The label aims to bring back the spirit of the Black Ark and bring it back to life,’ says Shadi.
Ark to Ashes – Need to know
Running since: November 2013 Number of releases: 3 Genres covered: Dubby House/techno, but I plan to dive a bit more into Dub music in all its forms Main artists: The Linguinis (Shadi Megallaa & Nadir Agha aka Ostrich), Grant Dell, The Coastal Commission, 3 Wise Men (Shadi Megallaa, Taimur Agha & Fahad Haider)
The best thing about running your own label is… The freedom to release my music as well as friend’s music whenever and however I please. I also love the branding aspect of it, the logo, artwork etc. I’ve always been around art and the look and feel of the label is a very important part of it for me. The worst thing is… Nothing. It’s all good baby! Our biggest seller is… 3 Wise Men EP. We’ve had support from… Whoever bought the records. I don’t do any type of promos or send the EPs to big name DJs. That doesn’t really concern me at all. Don’t believe the hype. What does your label sound like? It sounds like low frequencies rearranging your organs while the mids and highs tickle you on the inside. As with all Dub based music, drum and bass. The best online portal for us is… Our records are sold in most major record stores including Decks, Phonica Records, Halcyon, Technique and many others online. The website will be up later this year if all goes as planned. How do you make yourself stand out? By doing everything myself. Basically it’s whatever I’m into. I’m sure the label’s sound will naturally evolve with time as I’m always inspired by new sounds. Looking forward to where the label will go in the future. You should keep an eye out for… A new Dub project by my dear friend Tolga Fidan and myself. We are working on the album and it will be coming out on the label once its finished. There is no deadline, it’ll be ready when it’s ready. How does a smash hit happen? I don’t really care too much about putting out hits. I’m more into making true and honest music that will stand the test of time.
How involved are you with UAE producers, how can people get in touch with you? I’m involved with a few. I’m collaborating with a dear friend Salar Ansari who is also one of the Analog Room residents. People can get in touch with me by emailing me at arktoashes@gmail.com How hard is it to make money as a record label? It’s pretty hard to make money if you like to create the music that you truly feel and not follow any trends in music. If you are running a label for the sole purpose of making money, then you are in for a surprise. And what’s next for your label? The next EP will be different collaborations with various friends, including Tolga Fidan, Dilo and Lucky Luke.
And, to accompany the series, we’ve compiled our very own mix with one track from each of the labels, available to stream via our Soundcloud page, soundcloud.com/infusion-magazine Infusion Magazine – DXB On The Record Andy Buchan – LRB – Infusion Records Francis Inferno Orchestra – Ellingfort Road – Voyeurhythm Records Pryor – Fela Shuffle – Centric Music The Linguinis – If I Was – Ark To Ashes Arnav S – Subkraft (Sasse Mix) - one28 Recordings Florian Kruse – The Green Wine Experience (Raxon remix) – audio tonic Records Smokingroove – Message To The Playas – Illuminati DJ Sneak – The Party Of All – Gold Drama Records Greg Stainer – Back Home – Stained

DJ Booth: Lefox
We caught up with house/bass newcomer Lefox, who makes his audio tonic debut on Friday November 14
One thing you might not know about me is... I started off as a DJ playing school discos and parties to people who weren’t quite ready for the likes of Jump up drum and bass, I would be rinsing Ganja records and people would be asking for requests like Los De Rio – ‘Hey Macarena’. My worst ever job was… Cleaning out dirty second hand freezers in the middle of winter, cold and stinky work. My favorite ever record is... Black Box ‘Ride On Time.’ This very early house tune has some great vocals, keys and beats for its time. It brings back really happy memories of being a little kid and was also number one when I was born. DJing is much like... Black magic, you can cast voodoo spells on a dance floor and make people do crazy things. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Unsaturated, exciting and definitely ready to go off. Everyone is really friendly and there seems to be a very tight knit community of underground music lovers which is wicked. I can’t live without... Peanut butter on toast. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... Playing at Horizons festival in Bulgaria is one of my highlights, it’s a festival up a mountain in the snow and I was there with some really good friends from back home. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I would love to have been spinning vinyl at some of the raves in the early 90s - especially at the Helter Skelter or Dreamscape nights in the UK, when rave music was at its peak. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... A lot of my music and inspiration comes from Pearson sound, Joy Orbison and Boddika. soundcloud.com/finlay_lefox

Prepared for the zombie apocalypse? If not, then pay close attention, as one UK firm have created what it claims to be is the world’s first zombie proof log cabin. The Dhs350,000 cabin comes with reinforced slit windows, surrounding barbed wire, a toilet system, a garden (to grow your own produce) and zombie-proof walls. Available extras include security cameras, riot protection outfit, big bear water cannon, flame thrower (YES!) and search lights. “Please note - we require medical evidence of the presence of a real zombie should you wish to claim under the 10 year anti zombie guarantee,” warn the makers.
WEIRD PIC Think your noodles taste good? Probably not as good as one enterprising Chinese shop owner who spent Dhs350 buying 2kg of poppy buds to add to his food to make it more addictive.
What a meth Toys R Us has responded to calls from Florida mothers and has removed Breaking Bad dolls from the shelves. The Walter White and Jesse Pinkman dolls come with a detachable bag of cash and a bag of methamphetamines. The toy company said the dolls are being removed immediately from its website and US stores. “Let’s just say, the action figures have taken an indefinite sabbatical,” Toys R Us said in a statement. Bryan Cranston, AKA Mr White, responded to the controversy, tweeting, “I’m so mad. I am burning my Florida mom action figure in protest.”

Local female DJ controversially keeps clothes on
The internet was alight recently as one well known local female DJ decided to controversially keep her clothes on for her recent photo shoot and actually promote her music instead. Miss S. Keletor pulled the cunning stunt as part of her appeal to get her fans to concentrate on her music, having made her name for revealing her breasts more than her record collection. But the move back-fired as her million Facebook followers turned off in their thousands after hearing her car crash EDM sets. One fan, based in Mexico City said, ‘Aye carumba, what is this musics,’ while another commented that the music sounded like ‘a hoover being dropped down a flight of stairs.’ Miss S.Keletor could not be reached for comment.

eat sleep rave repeat Nobu One of the most revered restaurants in the city, our resident foodie Stephen Day was chomping at the bit to check Nobu out. Throw in one of our favourite DJs, Safe Smokingroove, and you have a winning combination‌
Let me start with a confession. My first love of Japanese food wasn’t at Nobu but at its sister restaurant Ubon in Canary Wharf where I would go whenever I could back in the 90s, so the thought of it excited me before I had even left the apartment let alone eaten anything. I’ve lived here for 6 years now but have never really ventured up to the Atlantis hotel for anything apart from Aquaventure, Sandance or throwing some shapes on Nasimi. However nuzzling at the end of the avenues proudly sits Nobu Dubai, one of 20 restaurants and bars in the vicinity. The space is huge with a well stocked and inviting bar area where drinks and snacks are served, then we’re led into the main dining area as we are greeted by the chefs with a loud “irasshai” or welcome in Japanese and sat at our table. Everything is well spaced out, but there is still a feeling of intimacy, activity and an organic hustle and bustle as waiters or customers move around to a background
soundtrack provided by their resident DJ. Whilst we look over the menu, some salty fiery edamame arrive to munch on and are most welcome. We plump for a set taster to get a real feel of what they are trying to achieve and start with some small taco shells, beef and lobster, all very nice finger food, followed by some lovely fresh, yellow tuna which danced in the ponzu dressing. Then came some seared new style sashimi: very tasty, but I’m not sure what was wrong with old style sashimi as it’s served the planet perfectly well for hundreds of years. Finally a lobster salad was brought to the table, which was full of citrus flavor but looked a little like someone had
opened a bag of salad on top of a plate. It was a perfectly good way to start off and the preparation and quality of the product shone through, everything was light and full of flavor but not quite mind blowing. We moved on to a hot section consisting of tempura spicy prawns: they were so delicate and cooked just right, they would have dissolved in my mouth if it wasn’t for the tangy sauce holding it all together. Next up came a very generous portion of signature miso black cod which is a little bit Nobu-by-numbers, but it’s still a classic that I could never fault. And then a charcoal burner turned up with a grill above it containing a roasted lobster stew bubbling on a large leaf which was my dish of the night,
combining mushrooms, garlic and delicate sweet lobster meat smoky from the fire below. Divine. There was also a very juicy spicy Peruvian style strip steak if your carnivorous instincts kick in. We ended the meal in the traditional Japanese way with sushi, all on point as you would expect, especially the soft shell crab rolls and a selection of small deserts; cheesecake with a delicate lemon sorbet and a number of ice cream filled mochi, the mango being my favourite. During this time, like me, the restaurant has become full to bursting and Safe (one half of Smokingroove) had laid down some great tunes to accompany the whole night perfectly. Nobuyuki Matsuhisa doesn’t need me to tell him how good his food is or how he chartered the acceptance of modern Japanese food to a wider audience but here we are in the desert with one of his restaurants serving some of best Japanese food in the region - he should be very proud of what he’s accomplished.

Underground culture comes to life from November 14-15 as Sole DXB returns, showcasing the latest trainers, apparel, hip hop and street art in the city. We caught up with Puma main man Mido, who was there at the big sneaker bang to find out what to expect…. You've been in Dubai for a while, how have you seen the underground culture grow and expand? I was born and raised in Dubai, so yes I’ve witnessed the evolution of the city. I think Dubai’s always had a little bit of an underground culture be it social, music or fashion but growing up we didn’t have the channels that exist today for us to express nor did we have platforms to fuel these movements. Dubai has gone through an insane transformation but until today a lot of that growth entails mainstream and commercial offering. Of course there are the exceptions to
the rule but It’s only been the last couple of years that we’ve really started to notice home grown brands come about, boutique concepts popping up and sub cultures bubbling and there’s plenty of room to grow, And how important are events like Sole DXB in that? Sole DXB is a living example of a platform that fueled a sneaker-head culture and it was born out for pure passion for sneakers. Don’t get me wrong, there were sneaker-heads in Dubai, their numbers were limited but they existed. They weren’t aware of each other nor were there any means of bringing them
together and Sole DXB was the missing link. It all started when we developed our workshop for the PUMA Creative Factory, our sneaker customization concept that was launched in 2010. We at PUMA sought out and shortlisted key individuals from our community that fit the profile and we hosted a workshop at our headquarters in Dubai and built an entire activation around it. It was then that the original founders of Sole DXB met, clicked, gelled and before you know it, the first ever sneaker was launched via a Facebook group. Since then SOLE DXB launched 2 sneaker summits with the 3rd being the biggest of the series to date launching on November 14th & 15th of this month at Design District; it’s not to be missed. There's a trainer swap over the weekend - what trainers would you be prepared to part with, and what have you got your eyes on? I’m quite picky with my trainers so I don’t think I’m going to be giving away any of mine. Also, let’s not forget my loyalty stays with PUMA so my sneaker collection is quite skewed. What are you most excited by about Sole DXB? We’re flying in Alife from New York so that’s going to be something to look forward to. We’re also looking into creating an exclusive Fishtail ride as part of our programming and we will of course be
showcasing some of our limited edition drops exclusively at Sole DXB. Other than what were doing, I’m always keen to see the homegrown concepts and what they bring to the table A man can be judged by his footwear - true or false? True. And I’ll quote Sole Dxb on this one, ‘What you stand on is what you stand for’. How do you dress, trainers first, or match them to the outfit? Trainers first, the rest is history. Cool
The Groove on the Grass ladies go head to head in this issue, but who’ll be dancing under the stars, and who’ll be chewing cud after our Cool Test?
ALEXIS
LISA
Who’s the coolest person in your phone book? Richie Hawtin’s Manager is really cool, we hung out recently at the Amsterdam That’s a tough on but I’ll Dance Event and had a say Konrad Black, I’m super lot of fun! Also Ellen Allien pumped he came back to play who played at Groove On at the Basement. the Grass last season is a pleasure to know. What’s the longest you’ve gone without sleep?
During my season in Ibiza when I was 21. We would meet at Bora Bora Beach on the Sunday morning, then go to Space for Carl Cox all night followed by DC10 on a Monday and an after party. It would usually hit 48hrs no problem. Now I value sleep and enjoy lots of it!
Hmm, has to be close to 48. I guess the last time would have been in Berlin last year after finishing a full day at a medical exhibition in Dusseldorf, I took the train to Berlin then carried on for a full WatergateSisyphos-Berghain-Panorama Bar marathon.
Coolest DJ in the world? Sven Vath has always been a favourite of mine since visiting his home Club in Frankfurt a few years ago and dancing for Cocoon in Birmingham. He has an outrageous personality and he reflects that in his DJ sets!
DJ Koze because he makes me laugh, his productions are incredible, his approach to promotion is very creative and he’s also a master behind the decks!
Your best dance move is…
The splits. Or for comedy value I have a dance called The spin kick drop down, if ‘The Lexipop Dance.’ There’s you see me out I will show it footage somewhere. Performed to you in action! only for special occasions.
Alexis Katerina vs Lisa Sant Have you ever injured yourself at work?
I worked for an Entertainment company for 6 years back in the UK called Area 51. I was stilt walking at Glastonbury dressed as a twisted horror clown! My stilt came loose and collapsed throwing me into the mud! I tore a muscle in my leg but it didn’t stop me having a great festival.
I had a window cleaning business for one summer during university. I had this old wooden ladder that wasn’t held properly on the pavement so it slipped and I crashed down from a story up. Luckily I walked away with just a massive bruise on my butt.
What’s your best claim to fame?
I feel proud to have been selected to work with the Earlier this year I was spotted London Royal Ballet in the on the Australian show Bondi showcase ‘Cleopatra.’ It was Rescue. broadcast on BBC 1 in the UK.
What’s the best insult you could give to each other?
Don’t upset my cat again, last Your breath smells as good as time she pooped on you! your cat’s butt! The verdict: Despite both going for cat gags for their insults – crazy cat ladies, much – this issue’s winner is Alexis, purely for fact she didn’t have a window cleaning business when she was younger. Groove on the Grass feat. Carl Craig & Recondite, Friday November 28, Emirates Golf Course, tickets via Platinumlist.net.
Wall of Fame
Tasked with giving the Dek on 8 a lick of paint over the summer, Dubai artist and multi-hypenate (paintersinger-graffiti artist etc) Maddy Butcher came up with an epic music-inspired mural. We caught up with her to find out what painting a 10ft tall Diplo was like‌
Who came up with the concept? If it was the client, were you pinching yourself at how much fun it would be? I wanted to paint a massive portrait of Gilles Peterson somewhere, and when a friend mentioned that the Dek on 8 was looking for a makeover it was the perfect opportunity. The venue originally wanted a giant beach scene, but I persuaded them it was worth shouting about the music that goes on at the venue. Superheroes and House of Africa bring in some of the world's best DJs and that's worth celebrating. Painting a huge mural like that sounds fun, but we know the reality was 3am nightly finishes over summer – how many litres of sweat went into it? And how many hours do you think you spent on it in total? I massively underestimated the whole job. 135 hours in total, and a lot of help from some amazing friends. Covering the whole wall with the pattern took the longest time, and if friends hadn't helped out at desperate times it would have overwhelmed me. Around the day job, it was a real workout over August! Who was your favourite to paint? And what were the trickiest parts of it, any double chins/bags under the eyes you had to Photopaint out? Osunlade was my favourite. I kept thinking about the power of the guy the whole time, and what a sense of presence he has. What a badass. There's a deliberate mistake in Pharrell's physique that I included to see if anyone would spot, and only people I've told have spotted it so far. And what's the reaction been like, have you heard from people you've painted? Osunlade and Black Coffee have both commented on their pieces on Instagram, and will both be able to sign them in the flesh in the next few months too! I'd love it if Pharrell signs his when he comes over for Formula 1 - we'll see. And what's next for you, painting the Great Wall of China? I've had commissions as a result, but some required chilling is needed with my Fiance for a bit - hasn't seen much of me lately.
The set list
Richie Hawtin: was a toss up between him and Luke Slater, but I now think Laurent Garnier should really be up there too. Frankie Knuckles: Obviously, and in pride of place. Daft Punk: For consistently killing it since the 90s. Pharrell: See Daft Punk. There's also a deliberate anatomical mistake on Pharrell that I'd like to see if anyone spots. Diplo: Mainly because of his beautiful Major Lazer efforts and not his Instagram smugness. Gilles Peterson: The reason for the whole thing. His BBC 6 Saturday show gets me through the whole damn week. Black Coffee: Smiliest DJ putting out good energy and good vibes - will be really excited to have him sign his portrait when he plays next‌ Osunlade: So much gravitas. The whole time I was painting him I was thinking "This dude is an actual Lion." Jocelyn Brown: The only vocalist on the wall. With Vocalists being a major component of 90% of the biggest dance hits, her voice is too big to ignore. Maya Jane Cole: She's not a fan of Dubai, but for an outstanding contribution to underground dance music, and that DJ Kicks album, is a worthy subject. Jeff Mills: Too prolific. Techno Godfather. Annie Mac: Along with Gilles, responsible for finding and disseminating choice cuts that go some way to canceling out some of the pollutants. facebook.com/maddybutcherART nstagram.com/maddybutcher

Slave to the wage DJing is a joy, you’re putting a smile on someone else’s face, you’re making them lose their sh*t and get their groove on, and in some amazing cases, you can be responsible for the creation of a human life as a couple take the vibes back home with them. And, honestly speaking, most DJs would play for free, but seeing as how capitalism is King and clubbing is big business, DJs need paying. But when some proper d*ck of a promoter says that he can’t afford to pay you despite having packed out crowds and a slice of the bar tab that would make Sandance smile, it’s time to get medieval. One missed payment between friends can be excused, but fail to pay for consecutive gigs because you’ve ‘overspent’ and you’ll quickly find out that no one wants to play your party, no matter how good it is.
