I’ve had a few memorable NYE moments in Dubai – opening for Jazzy Jeff at Trilogy, now where Pacha is situated, is right up there. Our issue is filled with soon-to-be big memories as we look ahead to the busiest night of the year. December 31 features everyone from disco legends The Jacksons, pop stars like Pharrell and big DJ talent like Above and Beyond, while we’re involved in no less than 3 parties across NYE and NYD. Happy New Year, and see you on the flipside.

What we did
Plus Minus feat. Ben Klock @ Level 41
Esteemed American Journalist Philip Sherburne once described Berghain as ‘quite possibly the current world capital of techno.’ For the uninitiated, Berghain is a German institution based in a disused Berlin power plant where the doors to this temple of techno open on a Thursday and close again on a Monday night. Well, that is if you’re lucky enough to be let in, as their door policy is notorious yet all part of the fun. To have one of their residents in Dubai for the first time was exciting enough but when that resident is Ben Klock, it’s off the scale. Ben has built himself a reputation on delivering driving techno of the highest order, his name appearing on list after list of ‘who to watch out for’ and after some banging local support he took to the decks for the Plus Minus crew up on the 41st floor of The Media One Hotel for more than 3 hours of what I will describe as a wall of industrial sound, the German Phil Spector. Each tune was a belter, the majority of which I’ve never heard anywhere else before. Whilst the room is busy, there is enough space to dance about for the respectful crowd full of boundless energy, each track met with delighted noise from all. Ben, dressed in standard issue Techno DJ Black T-Shirt, looked totally in control and enjoyed himself on his debut. Let’s hope he returns and word gets round to a few more people next time as he deserves a larger venue and a bigger audience.. – Stephen Day
Steve Lawler & Nick Curly @ Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE
As the winter draws in, the crowds come out and out they came in force for one of the best nights we’ve had at Blue Marlin for a while. Blue Marlin stands out in the UAE: the venue is fun, it encourages an energy that you rarely find on dance floors across the city and add into the mix Jixo & Danz on resident duty building the perfect backdrop as the afternoon goes on, and you have a perfect mix. Nick Curly delivered a masterclass in current cutting-edge techno, a proper statement of intent and the crowd lapped it up, every drop, every roll, even the odd cheeky classic thrown in for good measure. Come 10pm, everything was perfectly primed for Steve Lawler, who feeding off the crowd, delivered a solid set of house, tech-house and techno that kept everyone jacking well into the night. – Stephen Day
Looking Back
Creamfields @ Yas Island Despite the big name EDM headliners Afrojack and Hardwell, we were only here for one thing – well, two actually: techno titans Adam Beyer and Marco Carola. Carola has plenty of Creamfields history, having been a stand out at the first ever party 6 years ago, while Beyer was making his Abu Dhabi debut. And it was Beyer that impressed first, the techno slayer dropping a set of rolling drums and tough basslines, perfectly setting it up for Marco with his melodic, clicky, bouncy tunes to close out the house arena. Earlier in the evening, some of the GCC’s finest took to the two stages and dropped peerless sets, with the banging, underground beat of the Smokingroove brothers the highlight. And big up to organisers Flash for not only pulling off a 16,000 capacity event so well, but also giving local DJs like maDJam a main slot on the main stage: local talent rules. The main stage, packed with thousands of beat-hungry clubbers, went moshpit crazy as every dirty bassline rumbled over and over. Give them 5 years and some more Creamfields eductation, and some will have graduated to the techno tent. – Stephen Day

Rumours
Sam Divine and Reboot have been confirmed to play at Pacha • Ibiza Dubai in January of next year. Nikki Beach Resort is launching in Dubai towards the end of • next year.
• African star Davido is playing at Chi Domeland on New Year’s Day.
We’re hyped about rumours that a new dedicated, underground radio station could be coming our way in the first half of next year. Infusion guest slot please! O2 and Provocateur have just opened, and we're hearing rumours that 2 more big clubs are opening their doors next year! Let's just hope they learn some lessons from The Box, Supper Club, 2Liv and the rest of the clubs that shut their doors this year...
We discovered Twitter Audit, which verifies how many fake and real followers you have. We've passed on the info to the Angry Monkey, expect some righteous anger and embarassed faces very soon... We might have shouted about how good the club scene is in Dubai recently, but it looks like some parties are struggling to fill their dancefloors recently which is never good news.

Ring in the New Year at End 2014 on a high, quite literally, at Iris Dubai’s 27th floor rooftop party, Le Club. We took a closer look at what’s happening at one of Dubai’s best new venues…
There’s so much expectation on New Year’s, so much pressure to have the best night of your life that it’s often better sticking to a plan: one venue, one group of friends and one night to remember (well, hopefully). Which is where Iris Dubai comes in. Already one of the best rooftop bars in the city, they’ve given the 27th floor of the Oberoi Hotel a makeover, transforming the venue into Le Club. Le Club will feature WHITE Dubai’s resident DJAD for the night – a man who’s accustomed to playing to thousands of clubbers every week at the Meydan Venue. And joining him for the night will be club-friendly saxophonist Miguel, who’ll be jamming live over DJAD’s mix.
Alongside that, Iris will be providing a full entertainment package at very wallet friendly prices. Table bookings start at Dhs1000 per person, including a wide range of signature Iris dishes, and an open bar including premium alcohols and cocktails, while the same offer is available at the bar for Dhs750. And rock up after 11pm, and you’ll get an open bar for Dhs500. The food menu is almost – almost – as impressive as the cocktail menu, offering shareable platters of fresh creamy burrata, Scottish salmon tartare, marinated Angus medallions and rock prawn tempura and much more. Completing the night, Iris Dubai and their 27th floor views mean you catch every bit of the midnight action from across the city as Dubai explodes in a multi-coloured burst of energy.
Happy New Year! For reservations, please call: 056 951 1442 www.irisdubai.com

Jamie Jones & Richy Ahmed @ Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE
One of the biggest names on the house market, Jamie Jones is joined by fellow Hot Creations DJ and new Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE ambassador Richy Ahmed for the last night of 2014. We caught up with the latter to find out how the year’s been… Welcome back to the city, what have been your best NYE's to date? My best New Year’s Eve to date was probably before I was really professionally DJing about 5 years ago, maybe 6 now in Sydney with loads of my best friends. We just got on a plane, went over there on a whim and my friend was having a big party. I was facing the Sydney Harbour Bridge watching the fireworks in the biggest mansion you’ve ever seen, just out of the blue and it was just something that was completely new to me. You're always a big draw here – do you feel at home when you play? And is Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE your favourite Dubai venue? Yeah I do feel at home actually, the crew and the owner always make you feel welcome. They always really know their music and the minute you get there you feel at home. They’re really good promoters and a really good crowd.
What's big in your sets at the moment, what should we look forward to on NYE? New Year’s Eve is the biggest party of the year and I’m expecting a really big set from myself. I’ve just finished the Essential Mix and I’ve had a lot of gigs all summer so I’m armed to the teeth with records for this night and I’m just gonna give it all that I can. Celebration of Light feat. Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed & Ibellini, Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE, 8pm-5am, Dhs600 women, Dhs800 men including open bar. reservation@bluemarlinibiza-uae.com
Superheroes @ Level 41
A homegrown hit of Dubai’s club scene, bass/house/garage warriors Superheroes are throwing their own elevated bash on NYE, with a full roster of residents promising to bring the noise. We caught up with resident DJ and promoter Under The Moon to find out what’s in store… What's your midnight tune likely to be? I am thinking something along the line of CeCe Rodgers ‘Someday’. This record brings out the love in people! Probably one of the first ever deep house tracks too! If you could be any Superhero for an hour, who would you be and why? Banana Man. That guy is cool, but never really got much credit - he also has the best costume! Who's been your resident superhero this year? Both my residents, Kasparov & Somalie are mega. I would never pick between them, they are a dream team! Kaspar brings the bass and an old skool vibe, Somalie is fresh blood bringing a more upfront house sound.
There's some stiff competition on the night, what makes you stand out? We have an awesome venue, with 360 views from the 41st floor: Ideal for fireworks. It's walking distance from the Marina, JLT, The Palm, Media City and JBR: so no need to queue for taxis,. We have phenomenal music spanning house, garage and bass music - all through a phat Funktion1 soundsystem. Plus we are not overcharging for entry or drinks, at a mere 150aed! Bonanaza! Best/worst NYE experience? I have had some brilliant NYEs, some of the best were back in Bristol, hitting up the warehouse and rave scene. I have not had a disastrous one, as long as I am with friends and family times have always been great. Most memorable NYE midnight snog? That will be this year I hope! New Year's Resolution that will be ignored by January 10… To stay in more. There is always too much good stuff on in Dubai to miss! Superheroes, Level 41, 9pm-3am, Dhs150, sean@ superheroesdubai.com

What do you get when an Indian Rock n Roll singer meets an Egyptian Funk and Blues guitarist? Not a bad Christmas cracker joke, but Dubai’s latest band demanding your attention‌
My first musical influence was… Our first musical influence has to be the king, Elvis Presley. A lot of our songs give out an Elvis vibe and weirdly enough our lead singer thinks he’s the reincarnation of the King, haha. Our sound is best described as… Funky, groovy, fresh. Best piece of advice you’ve received? It had to be the advice we got from the Filipino superstars Rivermaya who told us to believe in our original material and never to doubt our tunes. With 20 years of experience and millions of fans, they definitely know what they’re talking about. What’s your musical guilty pleasure? A lot of our lyrics directly and sometimes indirectly attack the electronic music scene. It’s kinda rude and judgemental, but we don’t really care, we have fun with it. Some of the electronic sub genres are amazing. But some are absolutely killing the art of music. The best band in Dubai is… There are really tight bands in different genres around the city. When it comes to original bands, there are so many good bands in different genres. Juliana Down have to be the best right now within the rock scene, Nervecell in the metal scene and I guess with hard work and dedication, in time we should be playing with the big boys. When we make it, the one thing we want on our rider is… Our Hospitality Rider will definitely include buffets for every meal because the boys can really eat. It’s not even a joke. We totally want a car just for the band as well. We’ll call it “The Rat Mobile.” Our musical motto is… Create songs that people can relate to, groove to, and sing to. Best gig you’ve played? It’s just been 3 months for us as a band so as of now it was Bandjam Battle of the bands at Al Ghurair. 6000 people in front of us singing our song that they heard for the first time, an amazing experience. Best lyrics of all time? We’ve written 10 songs in 2 months. Out of which I think lyrically our best song is a song called “Starting New.” There’s a line that goes “Cigarettes in ash trays, Finger prints on an icy glass. Darkness can be emptied, and people can be wiped away from your past.” The second line mirrors the meaning of the first. But again I’m sure we’ll be writing better songs in the next few months. soundcloud.com/cnrmafia

The Hakkasan resident DJ tells us about making music, cooking and Tabasco sauce
One thing you might not know about me is... I can swim faster than most other people. My worst job ever was… I’ve only ever had one job before now which was with OHM Records, and I loved my time there. I’ve always just been freelancing making music for media. Now I have a full time job as Founder & CEO of 909 Music. I guess I’ve been lucky that my passion has become a career. DJing is much like… Cooking for guests. It is about mixing the perfect ingredients to create a sumptuous meal. And, in the same way as cooking, you want to make something that you enjoy while ensuring your guests have a great time too. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Growing exponentially every year. There are a lot of promoters now booking quality artists with great concepts and that makes me really excited. I’m really proud of … My decision to move to Dubai. I’ve been here a little over five years and I love it more every year. The city is really well planned with amazing opportunities every day. The tech startup scene is rapidly growing, the nightlife is flourishing, it’s got a great mix of people from all over the globe. What track could you drop in every set? One I’m playing a lot right now is called “Mz Sunday Luv & Nu & Christopher Schwarzwalder - Choose (Original mix)”. However, it’s not one that I would play every night as you have to pay attention to the mood of the audience and direct your choices on their reactions. At Hakkasan Dubai, the music is crucial to the overall ambience and I need to consider the different spaces – the restaurant, the bar, the Ling Ling Lounge and the terrace – as you want to carry the night but not overpower somebody who is there for dinner. I can’t live without… Tabasco sauce. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Well, I’m primarily a music composer and producer so getting the opportunity to be the resident DJ at Hakkasan Dubai is definitely my biggest. Arnav plays Hakkasan every Wednesday and Thursday from 9pm. www.facebook.com/clubbeats

Looking Closer The Weirdest
Weird News... of 2014 Sprout of his mind
A British man has successfully pushed a Brussels sprout up Mount Snowdon using his nose. No, seriously. It took him 3 days to scale the 1,085 peak, raising more than Dhs25,000 for charity. The 49-year-old, who practised by pushing a sprout around his garden, took on the bizarre challenge to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. He admitted: “People definitely think I’m mad, and I’m beginning to think it myself. It hurt my arms, my legs, my feet, my knees and my neck.” And your credibility?
Last Night A Kebab Saved My Life
Greasy, nutrition free end of night salvation they might be, but one Scottish lawyer has argued that the classic doner can prevent domestic abuse and even fires. She campaigned that Dundee’s Khans should have later licensing laws as ‘Medical evidence strongly suggests that eating after drinking helps induce sleep, which could help lower alcoholrelated domestic violence. Many residential fires are also caused by people who go home after drinking and fancy fried eggs, for instance, but forget they’ve started cooking.’ SNP councillor Jimmy Black replied: “I had no idea a kebab could solve so many problems.” You and us both, pal.

Looking Closer A close shave Who knew a bad haircut could spark a diplomatic situation between North Korea and a South Ealing hair dresser? M&M Hair Academy, not unfairly, used a picture of Kim Jong-Un with the caption ‘Bad Hair Day?’ underneath to promote their 15% discount. All fun and games, until North Korean diplomats waded in and asked the UK Government to ‘stop the provocation.’ The news comes soon after it was reported that male university students in North Korea were told they had to have an identical haircut to Kim Jong-Un, but there was no mention of a 15% group discount...
Lift off
Party hard
There’s no shame in asking for a bit of help sometimes. But one Nottingham police officer might disagree: after arresting a suspect, he had to ask for the prisoner’s mum for a lift to the station as he’d accidentally locked his keys in the boot. Amazingly, she agreed and ushered her son and the officer - still handcuffed together - into the back of her three-door Vauxhall Corsa as neighbours on the housing estate jeered and laughed.
We normally either plead ignorance, or tell our other halves that the taxi is ‘just around the corner’ as we attempt to stay out late. One Bolton man took this to extremes recently though after telling his girlfriend that he’d been kidnapped, so he could stay at the house party longer. The 32 year old claimed he was being held against his will at a house in Bolton and would not be allowed home until he had paid a £50 debt. His girlfriend called police on Friday and officers tracked his phone to Shurmer Street where they found him. He was fined for wasting police time, and now presumably doesn’t have to worry about staying out late as he’s single.

Burning man closes its gates amidst rumours Charl Chaka set to make debut Burning Man: The counterculture hippy/rave festival held in the North Nevada desert has closed its gates amidst rumours that Dubai based DJ Charl Chaka was en route to join the festival. Organisers said “The festival is home to some pretty wild and crazy events including A 50 foot burning wooden effigy, Libido Lounge, Canadian Beaver Licking Contest and 24 hour air conditioned orgy dome. However we’ve heard eye witness accounts of what takes place at a Charl Chaka after party and feel it’s too much even for our organisation.” As soon as the festival found out party-hound Chaka had made the trans-Atlantic journey and hired a party RV for the week-long event, they put the entire crew on Red Alert. Fearing Katrina-like fall out from party hurricane Chaka, the Burning Man team did something hugely unorthodox, but successful to counter the DXB DJ. We sent a covert team to the nearest Indian Casino in Reno and paid them $50,000 to commission The Chief and Elders to perform a ceremonial Rain Dance in the slim hope that torrential rain would poor down and we’d have valid reason to shut the gates. Needless to say, we’re delighted that our plan has worked and even though the whole festival is completely flooded and the gates closed to all revellers we feel like we’ve got off lightly.”
