DJing and dance music is big business – Calvin Harris, once a gawky, lanky Scot is now a chiseled pop star and walked away with in excess of $50 million last year. But closer to home, how well paid are Djs, do they get a slice of the expensive drinks/tables/entry fees? And what about international Djs, how competitive and fair has that market become, are we paying too much for Djs in Dubai? With those questions in mind, we’ve come up with 2 totally anonymous surveys for DJs and promoters, to help get an idea of what’s happening in our industry. Head to infusion.ae to get involved.

Felix Da Housecat @ Provocateur
Provocateur have been causing quite a stir since their opening event with Resident Advisor’s number one selector Dixon. Prior to checking out the club, I made a stop at The Mercury Lounge. Housed in the Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeirah Beach, this bar is the epitomy of Dubai style. Resident DJ and musical director Opolopo was laying down some serious house cuts, which together with our amazingly crafted cocktails put us in the mood for the night ahead. Once inside Provocateur, it was clear that no cost had been spared in transferring their New York vision. The bespoke lighting system and colour co-ordinated Funktion One sound system impressed - our table was next to a bank of speakers and the sound was clear and crisp and allowed us to talk. Felix’s bass heavy set was expertly flecked with classics such as New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ and Kris Menace’s disco banger ‘Discopolis’. With huge Co2 cannons on each side of the dancefloor and raised dancing areas between each booth, there really was a feeling that you could be in an Ibiza superclub. Do not be deceived by thee glamour and the glitz of the table service and models dancing on the tables: at the heart of Provocateur lives and breathes a club with serious party credentials and the atmosphere and guest line-ups back this up ten fold. – Stu Todd
Bassworx feat. Bailey @ Casa Latina
Casa Latina was once again the setting for a Drum and Bass tear out, courtesy of Bassworx. Generally known for its more intimate crowds - there purely for the music and a good time - this night was no exception, and the good vibes were flowing from beginning to end. Bassworx brought in award winning radio host and Metalheadz resident Bailey, so expectations among D’n’B aficionados were high. And sure enough, the man delivered, laying down a diverse selection of Drum and Bass from liquid to old school classics, and little reggae for good measure. His tune selection, and mixing style, kept his set fresh, and the crowd stomping throughout his two hour set, before the Bassworx residents rounded off the night with a great selection of deep rollers and jump up bangers. – Dale Chandler

Welcome to Dubai and Pacha, have you played other Pacha’s around the world, what’s special about the brand? Thanks for having me. Yes, I have played Pacha clubs all around the globe, especially the Pacha mothership in Ibiza. We are talking about probably the biggest brand in Dance/Music/ Nightlife worldwide. We’ve growna strong relationship and it’s a privilege to me being part of the Pacha family. Your clubbing history came from Sven Vath in Frankfurt when you were growing up, that must have been amazing? And have you met him now, or played with him? Absolutely! When I remember the beginnings of House and Techno music in Frankfurt around the late 80s and early 90s, I still get really excited. I was just a kid back then, but I will never forget the energy, when I first entered the OMEN Club or the Dorian Grey in 1990. It was clear to me, that this is the music I want to create. So I started buying synthesizers and drum machines at a very early age. Sven Väth was one of the big influences by that time, but also the house scene around DJ T, Ricardo Villalobos, Ata & Heiko M/S/O. I had the chance to play with him many times and we run into each other every now and then. How involved do you feel with the techno scene in Germany? My roots are here in Germany and especially Frankfurt, my home base. In the past 10 years we’ve grown an amazing community of artists around this area. Due to my worldwide touring I didn`t have the chance to play too many gigs in my hometown recently, but we are changing that now. Although, I am more related with house music, than for example the Berlin techno scene, I would still see myself as part of the German underground music movement. And how do you define techno, what does it mean to you? Techno and also House music, in my understanding, is the essence of rhythm and sound – a result, from melting the different influences like African and Latin American music, Jazz, Blues and Funk with electronic sounds. Using the almighty 4/4 mothergroove and building up and around it – never letting the focus slip away from the main showplace: The Dancefloor!
gets a house & techno Reboot! Pacha get a serious house and techno injection on Friday January 30 as Reboot heads up their main room line up. We caught up with the German producer and DJ to find out what to expect
We've read you've got a wide range of influences, including jazz, classic house, and tougher techno – what's been your newest influence, where do you go to find new sounds to inspire you? There is so much good music out there, that it would take way more than a lifetime, to discover it all – but I am trying my best to catch as much as possible! I simply love music – it is my motor! At home or on the road I rarely listen to electronic music. Recently I am back into old funk, reggae and blues. I also read a lot about music and when I read or hear something, that catches my interest, I start digging deeper into it and try to find the roots or creators of a certain type of music. That includes, searching my local Record dealer as much as the usual online shops. What are your big plans for 2015, Ibiza plans already? My team and I have amazing projects coming up for 2015. We have our Noon Artists agency that is growing and growing. We also just launched our own Label Noon-Records, with a sizzling hot EP of our Artist Romano Alfieri. I have been producing a lot of new music in the past months, so new EPs from myself are already in the pipeline and I am also working on a new Studio album. There are also plans for new Live-Shows, Showcases or collaborations. And of course I will be in Ibiza in 2015. It`s too early to present more details – but 2015 can come! We are ready! And what should people expect from your set if they've not heard you before? A very broad range of funky and butt-shaking underground dance music!

Up in smoke...
With news that the government are set to clamp down on smoking on public places, Andy Buchan argues that bars and clubs should be included in the remit‌ Imagine for a second I'm at your work, I'm sitting next to you at your desk. I spill a drink down your top, and as I apologise, a little bit of spickle lands on your cheek as I propel my words out, battling with the background noise. I stumble around the office doing a discombobulated dance looking for the toilets before forgetting what I was doing and start hitting on your female boss. And finally, I light up a fag and start breathing noxious fumes all over you, fumes so claggy, so hard-to-shift that your pens, your stapler, your hair, your shirt, your XL documents reek of smoke. And then I stub said fag out against your jumper mid dance move, burning a hole through to your scarred arm, and wander off towards the dancefloor.
Well, that's a pretty ordinary day at the office for a DJ (albeit one in a club and not at your office). And largely, it's fine - you head into a club to have a drink, to have a chat, to have a dance, to forget about your day in the office. They're all choices, and most don't have a definite or lasting impact. But smoking does, and increasingly it is becoming a choice around the world. The UK brought in nonsmoking in bars and clubs 6 years ago, New York and Toronto long ago opted out, and while smoking has been outlawed in various areas of Dubai (public and municipality buildings), it's still to find its way into club land. And I for one can't wait for it to come. Through various decisions, a lot of my life revolves around bars and clubs: from writing about them for DJ Magazine, Time Out and now Infusion, to DJing in clubs
a couple of times a month, I spend a lot of time in smokefilled, poorly ventilated clubs. And my laptop, headphones, CDs, hair and clothes reek of smoke, which means my lungs can only be gasping for fresh air. Historically, shisha is a big part of the Middle East culture, and cigarettes are cheap, Dhs10 for a pack of 20. Plus, there’s no pesky state-wide health service like the NHS to poke its nose into your health or advertising restrictions: as long as you’re old enough, light ‘em up.
But as Dubai is blessed with beautiful weather for 8 months of the year, it makes sense to make the most of the great outdoors and move the smokers outside. Or clubs could actually spend some of their hard-earned dirhams on properly ventilating their indoor rooms - it wouldn't alleviate the problem entirely, but it would go a long way to helping beat second hand smoke. But we're talking industrial sized units, rather than a makeshift fan which has less huff than an asthmatic fish.
of stinks: having been back to the UK post-ban, I can confirm that venues now have an air of BO and farts, a truly devilish concoction. Some clubs have even had to pump in synthetic smells to cover up the stink. On top of that, some dancefloors have suffered as clubbers rush for a cigarette hit and desert the floor. And of course, let's not forget the decades of advertising: smoking is cool. But fundamentally, Clubs would then be smoke free, and the DTCM would have clubbing is about choice - the right to choose your music, another revenue stream by handing out big fines to venues what you wear, who you go with, what you drink, when that contravene the rules (and to stumble home. But you maybe the proceeds could haven't chosen the right to be put towards lung cancer charities?). And smokers would breathe in someone else's second hand smoke, and be still be able to puff away, and even get a suntan/sauna in the exposed to any number of far-reaching, life-threatening process. Win win, right? illnesses. And that's a choice Having grown up in we all should be able to make smokey pubs and clubs (not ourselves. literally - my folks aren't bad people), I can see the advantages smoking brings. It lends atmosphere, it blurs the edges and adds depth to a room which otherwise might be too clean cut or stark. The smell also covers a multitude

We Are All We
Need Not only was Above and Beyond’s Jono Grant on hand to deliver an ace NYE set at Eden this year, he also had time to sit down with Infusion’s Matt Zaharias to talk trance, group favourites and new album We Are All We Need...
Dubai is a classic kind of transient audience, so you’ve got a lot of people coming in on holiday, a lot of expats, a lot of people checking out what all the fuss is about, so you obviously do get a local audience as well, but I think there’s a big transient audience that come through every week, so you’ll catch people who have seen you in other countries a lot. I think we set out to make an album that was slightly less clubby than Group Therapy and more song led, and then when I played it to someone, they said it was more clubby than Group Therapy. So maybe we didn’t achieve our goal in that sense, but I don’t know (what to expect) really – it’s an album that’s got sixteen tracks on it, mainly songs, a few instrumentals on there as well. I think every member of the band attaches different meanings to that We Are All We Need, for me it’s certainly not in a narcissistic sense…”We’re all we need, Above and Beyond is all we need” – it’s certainly not meant that way! It’s more like, we’re all we need as in terms of community, family friends and
also you know, do you need to look for something else, when you have right in front of you all you need to change the world. It’s sort of an empowering thing in my view, you know. Technology in the studio changes a lot, the writing process doesn’t change so much. It’s still the same way we work, we did try new things out here and there, but we write a lot of stuff on the piano or guitar, a few simple sounds, and then get the singers in and write stuff over the top. But the technology’s changed a lot, studio stuff is getting better and better at emulating old analogue studio equipment, which is really nice for getting a good sound, so that’s exciting. But obviously the production style changes over the years as well, and you’re influenced by other artists, and other music, so that changes too… Trance… trance is like, well, I see a lot of trance artists saying “trance is going to come back” – my answer is “has it ever gone away?”. It’s always there, you know, the trance fans are the most loyal fans you could possibly have, it’s like heavy metal, it’s the same thing but a different genre. Heavy metal fans, they get the tattoos, buy all the
merchandise, get really into it, and trance is the same, but you might not see heavy metal fans in the street, or recognize them… well, you might with the tattoos sometimes, but what I’m saying is, you put Iron Maiden on at a festival, suddenly fiftythousand people turn up from nowhere and it’s the same with trance music. In a sense, I’m not so interested in what Trance is, I just like good music… for me, the genre thing… if I hear like… what we’re hearing right now in the background, what is this, ‘Body Language’? That’s a great record, but what is it, techno, I don’t know what it is, but it’s a great record, and that’s what I listen for when we get sent records and want to add stuff to our set, it’s not a case of “does it fit above and beyond’s genre” – I don’t really care! The best advice I can give is ‘be yourself’. Make sure you follow your heart with your sound. You’ll find you’ll be pulled
in a lot of directions in terms of social media and stuff like that these days, and if you listen to too many people, you’ll actually end up losing the core of what you do. If you’re not sure if something you do is good, that’s ok too. But if you believe that something you are doing is really really good, stick with it. Just because you’re not getting traction straight away doesn’t mean what you’re doing is not very good. The biggest production tip is get on on Youtube, look at some of the videos of other producers because you’ll learn a lot from them. I still do that now, and I still watch as much stuff as I can on Youtube from other producers, programs like Pensado’s Place is a great studio program, and watch all those, absorb all the information from the guys who’ve been doing it for years. You can never stop learning
and that’s why I keep doing it, because it’s still interesting. We don’t really hang out as friends because we’re always on the road together. I think we’d be beating each other up if we were! I couldn’t pick a favourite, I love them both. But you know, if you spend too much time with Paavo then you want to be with Tony for a bit, and I’m sure they’re the same with me. So you know, they’re both great – they’re both great people to tour with. Selling out Madison Square Gardens was great, but what I would say is it’s not about the size of the gig, you can have a great gig with 400 people in a dark club, just as you can in MSG, so I think the important thing to remember, and I always say it to the other guys, is we can’t always get bigger and bigger
and bigger, you’ve got to go sideways or do something different sometimes. So that’s my take on that – you don’t top it, you do something different. And don’t always try and grow - the myth of eternal growth is a capitalist ideal that doesn’t really exist in my opinion. The challenge is still there for me, and as long as the challenge stays to make music and you know, every record is a challenge, it’s like a painful experience sometimes, because you want to try and make it perfect and as long as that stays there, I think I’ll keep doing it. I’ll certainly be doing music of some kind in five years, hopefully still dance music, and hopefully still DJing, but you never know what tomorrow brings, so we’ll take each day as it comes. Above and Beyond, We Are All We Need is out now aboveandbeyond.nu

MUSIC BITES ‘EDM used to be a term for all of electronic dance music, but now it just means all the music that you’re not supposed to play. It became the new trance. It got popular, so now we’re all into deep house. Tiesto complains about bandwagon jumpers. Takes one to know one (said in our best playground insult voice).

What do you do when you’re the biggest man in pop? Well, if you’re Pharrell Williams, you re-launch your NERD outfit, which is great news for fans of their cutting edge pop. But, in a sign of the commercial times, they’ve chosen their comeback to co-incide with the launch of the SpongeBob SquarePants film for which they’ve written 3 songs. “We loved going into studio to make music for this film,” Pharrell says. “I am one of SpongeBob’s biggest fans – can’t wait for everyone to hear the songs.”

On The Record
Long-running house night audio tonic launched their imprint nearly 4 years ago, and haven’t looked back since, gaining recognition and sales across the world. We sat down with label head and hot-shot music producer Raxon to find out more about how they did it…
Audio tonic
Running since: summer 2011 Number of releases: 32 Genres covered: Deep, Tech, House, Nudisco Main artists: Raxon Website: audiotonic.net
The best thing about running your own label is… Discovering new upcoming talent like Ed One & Bodden. They had their first release with us and now they’re signed with OFF recordings and doing well for themselves. Also another example is Frankey & Sandrino, one of their very first releases was with us called ‘Comeback’ and now they are signed with Innervisions.
The worst thing is… Going through demos that do not even relate to label, I’ve recieved hip hop and EDM more than once. A least do some research before you press send… Our biggest seller is… Jimpster’s Remix of ‘Don Fly Away’ and Kolombo’s remix of ‘Stanton.’ We’ve had support from… John Digweed, Danny Howells, Steve Lawer, Danny Tanaglia, Betoko, DJT, Kruse & Neurnberg just to name a few. What does your label sound like? Forward thinking house music. The best online portal for us is… Beatport and Traxource. How do you make yourself stand out? Simply by not following the trends and to be consistent.
You should keep an eye out for… AT033. How does a smash hit happen? Sadly in most cases these days it’s not entirely about the quality of the tune, it’s all about feature placement in Beatport’s main page and also genre section placement. DJ charts also make a difference. How involved are you with UAE producers, how can people get in touch with you? There are many great producers in town no doubt about that, but sometimes I feel a sense of giving up. I know exactly the feeling, that feeling after putting so many hours in the studio behind making a track then being excited to send it to label then in a matter of seconds you could get a response saying that it’s not for the label. This sometimes puts people off and they get the frustrated. Welcome to the music world, it’s all about that, and you should not get frustrated. In fact that should make you go back and work a bit harder, it’s all a huge learning process, improving your skills in the studio everytime you go back and work more. Our demo address is on our website and social media, and yes we check every single demo but unfortunatley due to the volume of demos we receive, we cannot answer back to each and every single one, but we do listen to everything. How hard is it to make money as a record label? Any record label exists as an expensive business card, the real money is in label parties and being present in the major events that happen ever year such as Sonar and ADE. It’s exactly like being a producer, you don’t really make money off selling track, it’s when you start getting booked to play because you made these tracks, that’s where the money is… And what’s next for your label? We are on to our 32nd release now with Brazilian giant Wehbba and we are slowing down a bit with the pace of releases and focusing more on bigger names on the label, such as Climers, Rodriguez Jr, Shall Ocin. So keep your ears pealed for what’s coming next…
A quick word with…
Thomas Gandey Ahead of his date at audio tonic on January 30, and his EP release party, we caught up with ex-Cagedbaby producer, musical genius and all round good guy Thomas Gandey Welcome back to Dubai, 2014 was a good year for you with big releases and also working on the War of the Worlds, not many other Djs can boast that I’m sure – how was it? And how did it come about? Thanks, such a pleasure to be coming back to Dubai, always a massive highlight for me on my calendar. We have a joke in my house I’m the most diverse producer around, I engineered and co produced ‘The War of the Worlds - New Generation’ album in 2012, it was a re-record of the 1978 disco classic with a new cast and all new parts. We have just finished a 20 date Arena tour in the UK. I was playing keyboards on the tour, it was incredible to be part of such a massive production and of an album loved by millions. Quite an experience. Is this where you’d like to end up musically? Does it bend your mind a bit that you can be working on a musical like that one day and playing a sweaty after hours rave the next? I have worked on a couple of dance musicals, a couple of years ago I co-wrote and produced an album with David Byrne and Fatboy Slim called ‘Here Lies Love,’ a tale of the Phillipino first Lady Imelda Marcos. It won some awards this year and is playing off Broadway and in London at the moment. It’s just another string to my bow really. My heart lies in dance floor music and performing but my classical background has allowed me to venture beyond the borders of standard dance music. You’re releasing on audio tonic Records, how did the collaboration come about? Raxon the label manager and I met in Sonar in Barcelona as we both release with the amazing Sincopat Label based out of Valenica. I have been a fan of audio tonic for a while and have always loved 360 as a location and venue when I am in Dubai and have been to a few audio tonic parties in the past. We got talking and kept in touch
and the opportunity cane up for a date and we decided to make some music for the label to go with the show. I’m super-happy with the new release and it will get its premiere at the gig. And what does the track/EP sound like, any influences? I’ve been working with labels I admire this past year like Desolat, Planet E, OFF, Get Physical, Suara and Sincopat. I have a sound which rings through all of those but I really like the Spanish Deep Tech sound that’s been killing it for me lately and I work with artists like German Brigante, Affkt and Darlyn Vyls a lot. This new track is on that tip, groove based sleazy, deep tech house with latin grooves but with my vocal and keyboard licks all over it. I’m super proud of it. Audio tonic feat. Thomas Gandey, Friday January 30, 4pm-3am.
To accompany the series, we’ve compiled our very own mix with one track from each of the labels, available to stream via our Soundcloud page, soundcloud.com/infusion-magazine Infusion Magazine – DXB On The Record Andy Buchan – LRB – Infusion Records Francis Inferno Orchestra – Ellingfort Road – Voyeurhythm Records Pryor – Fela Shuffle – Centric Music The Linguinis – If I Was – Ark To Ashes Arnav S – Subkraft (Sasse Mix) - one28 Recordings Florian Kruse – The Green Wine Experience (Raxon remix) – audio tonic Records Smokingroove – Message To The Playas – Illuminati DJ Sneak – The Party Of All – Gold Drama Records Greg Stainer – Back Home – Stained

DJ Booth: Rico
Pacha Ibiza Dubai’s disco/funk/nudisco champion DJ Rico is next up in our DJ Booth, revealing his love for pulled brisket and Gwen McRae
One thing you might not know about me is... I love Pugs. Pugs are the best. My worst ever job was… Working as an electrician’s apprentice in a factory that made washing machine parts. My favorite ever record is… I have many, but off the top of my head Gwen Mcrae ‘90% Of Me Is You.’ DJing is much like… Nothing else, playing music for a living is awesome. Dubai’s clubbing scene is… Getting there, I’m a newbie, what I’ve heard and seen all seems to be on the positive side. I’m really proud of… My friends and family for all their success. What track could you drop in every set? Kerri Chandler ‘Rain’. I can’t live without… Obvious one but, music. My biggest DJ achievement to date is… Playing in Spain and Dubai for Pacha. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Pulled Briskett Sandwich from P&B Smoke house Souq Madinat. If you could DJ in any decade which would it be… The 70s for sure but the back end leading into the 80s. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be… Tony Humphries. I’m not a politician but… If I was I would shoot all politicians, slimy turd brains. soundcloud.com/djricodubai

Weird News... When an Elephant makes love to a car…
Ever wondered what happens when a frisky bull elephant decides he’s taken a shine to your Mercedes and wouldn’t mind getting down to business? One car in Thailand found out recently as the elephant in the wildlife sanctuary stomped all over the vehicle, ripping the bonnet off with its tusks before rampaging into the forest. No one was hurt, but the elephant was said to have been annoyed he didn’t get the Merc’s number.
WEIRD PIC Apparently, it was his odd walk that alerted border police in Hong Kong to this man who was wearing 94 – NINETY FOUR – iPhones strapped to his body. Yeah, we’d probably be walking a bit like John Wayne as well.
Frosty the not so snowman A prominent Saudi Arabian cleric has issued a religious ruling forbidding the building of snowmen, describing them as anti-Islamic. Sheikh Mohammed Saleh al-Munajjid said “It is not permitted to make a statue out of snow, even by way of play and fun.” The news came about after snow covered the upland area of Tabuk near the Saudi border with Jordan. Aled Jones sadly couldn’t be reached for comment.

Clubs ecstatic about new banking legislation Clubs and bars across the UAE rejoiced today as the central bank created the VVVVIP Plan which allows borrowers to borrow up to 3 times their monthly salary to get a table at a ‘high end establishment.’ The new VVVVIP Plan will open up clubs and bars to a wider audience, all of them keen to stand on the other side of the velvet rope in the kind of quiet and boring area where no one dances or smiles much. Mustapha Creditcheck the spokesman for Bank of Dubai said ‘We are very excited to be offering this new service to compliment our existing ‘A round of drinks in Cavalli’ credit card.’ Our in-house financial expert, Mo Money, meanwhile cautioned that this could be an irresponsible plan. ‘This could be an irresponsible plan,’ he said, before mumbling something about credit crunch, bad debt and this generation is screwed.
