WE LOVE Manic Mondays
There are Dubai institutions, and then there are Dubai institutions like waking up on Tuesday morning with a blinding hangover and a Manic Mondays stamp on your wrist. Making Mondays cool way before Secret Circle got in on the act, Zinc’s legendary mid-weeker has long been one of the best nights in the city. There have been few better places for good quality commercial dance music and an up for it crowd and 2 for 1 drinks for ladies in town for over a decade. Plus, it’s currently the only night of the week where you can catch Zinc legend and Hollaphonic decks man Greg Stainer in action, one of the city’s best DJs. What are you waiting for, hungover Tuesday mornings aren’t going to just happen on their own, are they… Manic Mondays, Zinc, free drinks for ladies and cabin crew 10pm-midnight

ALL GOOD @ COCKTAIL KITCHEN You know when the line up includes David Craig, Megadon Betamax and James Locksmith and the playlist is classic 90s hip hop, that the good times are here. Cocktail Kitchen, a swanky JLT restaurant and lounge, was packed to bursting for the monthly night, with cocktail drinkers (we were on the Bold Fashion, an old fashioned with a pineapple twist) getting jiggy to sultry 90s RnB, boom bap classics and some new jack swing. As expected, the ladies got the dancefloor going from early, which is what it’s all about. Next time though, please get some extra AC units or fans involved. Frak Fu Up next: All Good, Friday August 26
10 STREET, JBR Long-time Marina-based expats will no doubt be in for a shock when they realise their local “Tiki Puka Puka” haunt has been turned into a trendy, New York Subway-themed sports bar; luckily, there’s no need to panic as there is still cocktail-fueled fun to be had. With an extensive drinks menu compiled by their bottle-juggling mixologists, Canadian-eats (the questionably-named “I’m a Belieber” chicken burger served between two waffles was a big highlight) and an eclectic mix of music from the 70s, 80s and 90s, Ten Street should appeal to most. For people aspiring to be the next Bieber (or Adele), a private karaoke booth is available for hire and for the Paul Newman wannabes, there are 3 top quality pool tables available to test your skills. As customary with sports bars, screens are scattered around to ensure nobody misses any sporting action being televised. Don’t forget to spin the wheel for the opportunity to win free food and drinks vouchers and watch out for the red lights above the main bar being lit up throughout the night - it means discounts on selected drinks! SUNDAY - AUGUST 14
Thrive Alive! New industry night Thrive is causing quite a stir, thanks to its collaborative networking focus every Sunday at Tribeca. We caught up with the brains behind the concept, Ethan Auguste to find out more
Congratulations on the launch night – if people haven’t been before, can you sum it up in one sentence? #ThriveINTribeca is an industry event that focuses on showcasing, inspiring and networking with others in the fields of fashion, art, media, entertainment, and hospitality. What did you expect from the opening night? And what did you learn from Hollaphonic? I wanted to see a nice group of interested persons in a room learning from the experiences of Hollaphonic. The talk was a success, we learnt more about the industry, being signed, the creative and production process etc.
It’s great to have an inclusive night like this, one where people can learn – why have there not been more events like this, are promoters too self involved? Similar events have and do happen around town but with different formats and are not regular enough to cater to selective fields. I guess promoters don’t see the importance of collaborations and basically working and helping others achieve their goals. These talks will engage the community using industry discussions that can even help develop and create amazing initiatives that would benefit all involved. Who’s coming up over the next few weeks? You can expect talks about PR/Branding, acting, fashion and entertainment. Soon we will be hosting international industry experts from major labels, studios, brands, celebrities etc. so I’m looking forward to the start of these international panels. Who should come to these meetings and why? The event format allows for everyone in the fields of fashion, art, media, entertainment and hospitality to enjoy all that is happening. With a themed weekly industry focus, each event is slightly different. What remains constant is live music, art on display and on various nights you can look at a film screening or a fashion showcase. Where did the inspiration come from for the event? I’ve always had a passion for working with talents, from being their manager or putting on a show to showcase them, I see many talented creatives that either give up because of finances, lack of direction, connections, platforms and the list goes on. I believe if you have talent in whatever field you should be able to show the world and not keep it to yourself, everyone needs that push, motivation and help to get to take that next step on the ladder. www.thrivedxb.com

COVER FEATURE
RETURNS
Attention all UKG heads – 2 of the scene’s biggest stars, Luck & Neat and Artful Dodger, are coming back out to Dubai for an almighty party on Thursday September 6 at XL. We caught up with Luck & Neat to find out Congratulations on 20 years in the industry – that’s some achievement! How did you celebrate? Yep, time flies when you’re having fun! We put on an absolutely huge event in association with our UK event brand “Curiosity” at Electric, Brixton in London. It was an
incredible artist lineup that celebrated our journey through the 20 years within the scene. Luckily we have not had many hurdles, the UKG scene has been consistent and busy with bookings. We have both had families throughout this time which makes us even stronger as a unit.
If you were giving advice to Luck and Neat 20 years ago today, what would you say? “Don’t Worry about a thing cos everything gonna be alright” – Bob Marley. How much has what you play changed over those 2 decades? What we see as old skool UK Garage from 1998-2002 is the best era of music for us and what is in most demand today – from 2002 it went into the grime side, then bassline, then funky house yet the scene has done a full cycle and UK Garage is back with huge demand. And what do you reckon you’ll be playing in another 20 years? Haha, classic Mozart with a touch of Michael Jackson! LOL. You’re regulars here, why do you think Dubai gets the Garage vibe so well? Dubai has always loved Old Skool Garage and we have always loved performing here – Dubai is an older more sophisticated crowd that appreciate quality music and it reminds people of back in the day when they were raving throughout the UK. Dubai Garage Nation deliver a quality tailored specialised event that people love, know and trust. What other strongholds are there around the world? Amsterdam and Rotterdam love UKG all year round, and our summer schedule is packed with resort islands like Ibiza, Ayai Napa, Malia, Zante, Kavos, Magaluff, Gibraltar and many more. And tell us something about you that we don’t know? MC Neat likes to practice his lyrics in the shower and do the moon walk across his bathroom! DJ Luck gets his inspiration from Sponge Bob Square Pants! Garage Nation feat. Luck & Neat and the Artful Dodger, XL, Thursday September 8, 9pm-3am, tickets AED125

THE MOST RIDICULOUS BAND AND DJ RIDERS IN HISTORY… From inflatable boats to 100 white goats and Grey Poupon mustard, bands and DJ riders have been getting ever more ludicrous. Here are some of our favourite riders, all of them 100% true (yes, even the brown M&Ms story)
Steve Aoki
So we all know the renounced cake-flinger wants 2 – not one, but 2 – inflatable boats on his rider, but did you know he also demands confetti blasters, a Co2 cannon as well as fresh socks, underwear and t-shirs. Also, Steve is a ‘master of ceremony,’ not just a DJ, got it?
Afrojack Being one of the tallest DJs in the game (a towering 6’4”), he needs a DJ booth at least 1.30m high, and presumably a box for the warm up DJ to balance on. More outlandishly, he asks that he’s driven around town in a Bugatti Veyron or a Spyder, and if those aren’t available, you have to run the vehicle past management. How about one of the UAE worker’s buses – they’re long enough and you’d be down with the people then, as you so clearly are.
Pendulum
Being in the world’s greatest drum and bass band is sweaty work. When they were together, they asked for 50 full body – none of this hand towel business, purlease – in their wash room. Not to be outdone, Dirty South specifically asks for four clean white Egyptian
Calvin Harris
cotton towels, and asks for 4 small black hand towels, presumably so he can wipe the shame of being a sell out away without seeing the stains.
Slayer Slayer being Slayer, asked for 100 snow white goats for slaughter and 4 black yoga balls on their Fun Fun Fun tour rider. Oh, and freezer bags and coolers to preserve the goat meat. Obvs.
Madonna The Queen of Pop asks – well, demands really – that all furniture be removed from her suite and replaced with all the pieces she’s shipped over. She needs 20 international phone lines as well as special white and pink roses that are cut to exactly 6 inches. We’re not entirely sure what happens if you cut them shorter, but we doubt you’d be around to tell the tale.
Mötley Crüe One of the most raucous rock bands, you know the Crue’s rider is going to be good. In the past, they’ve asked for a sub-machine gun, a 12 foot boa constrictor, and the local AA meeting schedules (good boys). Amusingly, they’ve also asked for jars of Grey Poupon mustard, which backfired big time. Lead singer Vince Neil hurled the wrong mustard backstage in anger once, only for it to bounce back and sever an artery in his thumb.
Katy Perry Her 45-page rider insists that her driver is not allowed to talk to or make eye contact with her. Ok then.
M.I.A
Her modest 26 page rider is pretty sensible – vitamins, dried mangos and a bottle of absinthe. Plus, obviously, three women between 20-25 years old to dance on stage with her decked out in full body burkas.
Van Halen The big bang of outrageous riders, Van Halen constructed a Chinese phone book sized rider in the 80s that included a giant supply of M&Ms – but if any brown sweets were found, the promoter would forfeit the entire show at full pay. It only transpired that the band were in fact having a laugh, and that they couldn’t care whether their M&Ms were brown, green or blue, or even if they had any M&Ms. The story quickly fell into folklore, however, and paved the way for ever more ludicrous riders.
The wishlist We asked some of the city’s DJs what item they’d most like to request on their fantasy rider :: • Scott Forshaw The sound guys must refer to me as ‘his Lord majesty’ at all times • Darren Da Sendri Hendry A ray gun that I can use to instantly disintegrate anybody that asks for a ridiculous request
Look and Listen
Music News THE VINYL COUNTDOWN FOR TSE TSE FLY Experimental DXB noise outfit Tse Tse Fly have grand plans, and need you to be part of them. They’ve set up a Kickstarter fund to raise money for their debut album, Easy Listening Vol.1, which will be a gatefold heavyweight vinyl format including exclusive artwork from the Tse Tse Fly family. They currently have over a third of the money raised, so dig deep to support a very worthy local initiative. And if that wasn’t enough, Infusion favourite and dance music legend Andrew Weatherall played the opening track from the album on his NTS show recently: ‘‘...the work of Tse Tse Fly Middle East which is an arts collective from Dubai. So there is some hope for Dubai. I just thought it was a monumental human folly...but obviously there are some people doing very good work’.
SAY WHAT?
“I have to work with Ikea - make furniture for interior design, for architecture” Ah Kanye West, how your boundless creativity and spectacular nonsense makes us smile…
NEW ONLINE MUSIC PLATFORM ORFIUM LAUNCHES

Well, new online music platform Orfium are hoping so as they’ve just launched an all encompassing site that promises to be the solution for music streaming, storage, creation and more. The site has cherry picked from existing platforms, meaning users can share tracks, promote them and sell downloads. Plus, it has a streaming royalties function and will let you upload DJ mixes while compensating all the artists included. As ever, the site will live and die by the user pickup – but it’s well worth checking out for people looking for a new online option. orfium.com
Soundstage RITA & THE ROGUES We get up close and personal with Rogue Trader’s throwback resident band – Hayley Di Rito on vocals, Adam Burgess on piano and Graeme David on drums My first musical influence was… Graeme: Billy Joel. Hayley: Rock & Roll, Dusty Springfield, Marilyn Monroe and 1960s girls groups. The last pop star I liked was… Hayley: In the “00s” Lady Gaga, 90s Spice Girls, 80s Madonna, 70s Aretha Franklin, 60s Dusty Springfield 50s Marilyn Monroe, 40s Peggy Lee. My sound is best described as… Adam: I’ve got big hands so usually quite wide and percussive. I can do ‘fairies on a pond’ if I try really hard. Hayley: 3D! Dynamic, Soft notes are just as important as the loved ones. Best piece of advice you’ve received? Adam: Always say yes to the gig and worry about how to do it afterwards. And, don’t be afraid of the deep end... it’s
only live music; happens once, then it’s gone. What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Adam: Take That. Hayley: Disney songs & Musicals! Also Kylie Minogue. Graeme: Power Ballads and Barry Manilow. Best claim to fame? Adam: Performing with Culture Club at very short notice last time they came thru Dubai. Hayley: Working alongside Robert Downey Junior. Graeme: Being the opening act for the Bee Gees. When I make it, the one thing I want on my rider is… Adam: I’ve had many riders. Usual stuff: beverages (of varying strengths). Soft towels and new socks are nice, as is a good hotel. Sometimes you get them, sometimes not. Graeme: A massage chair. My musical motto is… Adam: Feel is just a little more important than notes. Hayley: I don’t sing because I’m happy… I’m happy because I sing! Best lyrics of all time? Hayley: Two drifters off to the see the world… There’s such a lot of world to see We’re after the same rainbow And waiting round like bend My huckleberry friend Moon river and me facebook.com/ritaandtherogues/
On The Record Sunstroke Records Long running house party Sunstroke have made the move into the record business, and recently launched Sunstroke Records. We caught up with 360 resident and label head honcho Jack Woodcock to find out what’s in store‌
Need to know – Sunstroke Records Running since: July 2016 Number of releases: 1 Genres covered: Deep, Soulful House, Nu Disco Main artists: LJ Hawk, Husky, Timmy Vegas, Tom Chubb, CN Williams, Akura, Soffei, RCNE Website: www.sunstroke.ae
The best thing about running your own label is… Getting to listen a lot of music and support local guys and gals. The worst thing is… Doing artwork in 1 millions different sizes! Our biggest seller is… It will be our 1st release LJ Hawk Ft. Ash - High (Husky’s Bobbin Heads Remix) a really smooth deep vocal house track perfect for outdoor venues such as 360°. We’ve had support from… Husky, CN Williams, Shane D these guys have so much experience and have really helped me get the label off the ground. What does your label sound like? A fresh mix of funk, followed by a dash of soul, with a hint of sex appeal, added together with grooves that will literally blow your knickers off. The best online portal for us is… Traxsource who will be supporting our 1st release. How do you make yourself stand out? Simply by trying to release quality records. You should keep an eye out for… 3 releases by Timmy Vegas & The Boogie Down Dee Jays. How does a smash hit happen? Firstly you have to have a great record, then you have to get it to the right DJs such as our Sunstroke guest DJs Joey Negro, Spen, Grant Nelson etc and work hard promoting it.
How involved are you with UAE producers, how can people get in touch with you? I want very release to have either been produced or remixed by local producers for me this is the most important part to our label. Please get in touch label@sunstroke.ae we would love to hear your tracks in any genre. How hard is it to make money as a record label? There is a lot of music being released these days and you really have to stand out but at the end of the day if you have great record you will make money. And what’s next for your label? We had the Sunstroke Record Label Launch Party @ 360° ft. Husky recently. Husky played for us last season and it was one of the best sets I have heard in a long time.

DJ BOOTH: SCOTTIE B
Award winning international DJ now based in Dubai, Scottie B holds down residencies at Cavalli and Cirque Le Soir One thing you might not know about me is... I was born in Trinidad. My worst ever job was I’ve been a DJ all my life (since I was 15). I worked in a record shop for a few years while I was still in
school, but that was basically DJing all day anyway! My favorite ever record is... I have many, but it would definitely be something from the 80s or 90s. DJing is much like... DJing is not like anything else. I guess at the very high end you can compare it to being a pop star, although some DJs are nowadays. Dubai’s clubbing scene is... Interesting! It’s not as nice as it used to be, however that’s been helped with a wider variety of people now living in the city and vast selection of venues (which is good). I’m really proud of... I’m proud of myself for making my family proud. What track could you drop in every set? Most of my sets are open format so there’s a lot that I could always play. I guess it just depends on the crowd and the venue. I can’t live without... I can’t live without my family and DJing. My biggest DJ achievement to date is... My biggest DJ achievement I’d say would be getting a gold disc for sales from one of the compilations I’ve mixed. What is your guiltiest pleasure? Buying things! (Mainly shoes/trainers). If you could DJ in any decade which would it be... I started in the 90s so I’m happy with that. If I could go back-to-back with any other DJ it would be... I’ve already done b2b with Shortee Blitz on 2 turntables and 4 CDJs which was crazy, but I’d love to do b2b with DJ EZ. I’m not a politician but… I’m not a politician but all lives matter. www.scottieb.com
TECH TALK Pioneer DDJ-RZX
Another issue, yet another Pioneer fancy box. This one, however, is their most technologically advanced to date, and has virtually everything but surface-to-air missiles. It has 2 platters, a 4 channel mixer, but now comes with trigger pads for samples, three touch screens for browsing through tracks and also comes with video mixing software courtesy of Rekordbox Video. It allows you to be the DJ and VJ, controlling all your visuals through Pioneer’s in-box software. The controller is huge by controller standards – and the layout will take some navigating, as every available surface has been used for buttons, sliders and pads. And at $3,350, this is a serious investment. But if you want to lift your DJ game to the next level and include VJing, this is the kit you need.

Wildwood Sunglasses
Dubai essentials – a copy of Infusion Magazine, the Careem App and a good supply of sunglasses (for when you leave them at the club/drop them off your yacht/fall asleep on them). We’re on our 3rd pair of Wildwood Sunglasses. Not only are they a homegrown UAE brand, but they’re eco-friendly and handmade with TAC polarized lenses offering UV400 protection. Prices start from just AED350, with 10% discount if you like their FB page.
Beat It The UAE. The land of the free, the brave, the land of the wifebeater, if our club bookings are anything to go by. The keener-eyed DJ spotter might have noticed a certain convicted criminal on the decks recently. Not only that, but another promoter had him down on their line up for 2 weeks following before wisely pulling out. Now, the Monkey believes in second chances, he does. But fairs fair – until we see him with a black and blue face and 2 black eyes, we’re not going to be supporting his music or any of his gigs. Next thing you know, he’ll be booked for a back to back session out here with Ten Walls.
