RIP BUBBLES

I was saddened to learn earlier this week that a friend that I made on my last trip to Berlin had been shot and killed in the Tenderloin area of San Francisco early on Saturday morning. The artist formally known as Bubbles was larger than life and to be shot and killed for being different is beyond comprehension. If you have visited Burning Man, Camp Out festival or indeed any party in San Francisco in the last 5 years you will likely have crossed paths with Bubbles.

When I met Bubbles he was dancing with his eyes closed in Sisyphos club in Berlin and he was instantly welcomed in to our group for the day. He is without a doubt the biggest character I have ever met and he has been in my thoughts almost constantly since I met him in June. Our thoughts go out to his close-knit group of friends and we wish him all the best in his next life. RIP Bubbles.

WE LOVE THE MUSIC ROOM

It is with a heavy heart that it was recently announced that The Music Room is due to close its doors permanently. The much-loved live music venue at The Majestic Hotel in Bur Dubai has played host to some amazing musicians since opening in 2005 and was also the location for the stand out Red Bull party which saw Dam Funk wow crowds with his silky-smooth sounds.

The Music Room is also seen by many as an integral part of Dubai’s grassroots music scene, with this now gone it leaves Dubai’s live music scene at a somewhat of a cross roads. In any case, let us not forget the good times had on its wooden dancefloor as I am sure many of you reading this will have experienced The Music Room at some point in your Dubai journey. I know I will remember it fondly.

The Music Room will be opening its doors for one final jam on Saturday, September 30 for the venue’s annual Oktoberfest Reggae Explosion, the event will be hosted by Reggae Loverz Crew and will feature the international sound system by DubStation.

What we did FLASHMOB @ SUMMER VIBES

After a very successful summer series from the Third Eye Crew team they brought Italian Alessandro Flashmob over to the fair shores of DXB for one of the last summer parties.

As always, Industrial Avenue was dressed up in the standard, amazing Vibes Series decor which added to the happy and bubbly atmosphere of the night. Mario Bazouri started the night off with his very distinct sound which warmed up the crowd nicely. Up next was Amy Wells, a resident of Summer Vibes and strong female DJ who is great for the local scene in Dubai, who was able to take the venue up a level in preparation for Flashmob. With tracks such as – Sandy Rivera “I Can’t Stop” (Dario D’Attis Remix), Camelphat and Elderbrook “Cola” and Nic Fanciullis remix of Gorillaz “Ascension” a great vibe of bouncing house music was created for the waiting crowd before Flashmob can onto the stage to see the night out.

With the crowd ready and waiting, Flashmob came onto the stage and started off with a timeless classic in Shakedowns “At Night”

(Kid Crème Funsta mix). With senses heightened, hairs standing on end and eyes pricking up for the dancing mob, the night was taken to new levels and the crowd were not disappointed with a great uplifting house set from Mr Flashmob himself.

The end of the summer vibes series is coming to end and with it a return to their spiritual home of Tamanya Terrace at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Media City. Industrial Avenue at The Westin Hotel was a great fit for the night during the summer months and I am sure they will return there again soon after the summer series has finished.

For their final party, they have Eli and Fur. What a way to go to finish guys.

HOPFEST @ IRISH VILLAGE

So being a typical expat Dubaian, I don’t normally venture out past Marina but on this occasion, I’m glad I did. Heading out to the Irish Village for the annual Hop Fest, I was full of trepidation. Were my visas sufficient for the journey and would I get a nose bleed being so far away from home?

Arriving at 9pm and thankfully there were no queues on entry to buy the all-important drinks vouchers and when I entered, I found a space that was welcoming to all. A huge well air conditioned tent with a massive selection of beers and ales from around the world.

There were choices from the States, to Asia, to the Americas and of course a wondrous array from Europe. There was also clearly marked territories with well-informed staff ready to give you their recommendations if you couldn’t make up your mind.

The crowd was up for it and a great mix of nationalities and ages.

No bad vibes, just good humour and a party atmosphere. Music was supplied by 3 great covers bands playing well known tunes that had the whole tent singing in unison. The bands were elevated so everyone could see them and meant much more space for everyone inside. The sound quality was mint, loud enough to dance and sing to but at a level that you could still talk to your mates.

I’m glad I came on the Thursday as I can only imagine Friday and Saturday being organised carnage. I will definitely be back next year; it’s the best way to kick start the season.

LAURA JONES @ PLUS MINUS

Continuing they’re onslaught of top weekly international DJs, Plus Minus was ready to bring back one of its favourite guests in the lovely and talented Laura Jones. For this occasion, James Locksmith and Andy Mcgirr were on warm up duties. After taking over the controls from James Locksmith, who delivered a lovely, deep opening set, Andy Mcgirr set about building the dance floor with some tasty melodic and progressive vibes taking it up to a more old-school house feel with tracks such as Steve Lawler’s fantastic remix of Jesse Perez ‘Fake’. Just after midnight, and with the crowd ready to go up a gear Andy handed over to Laura Jones who proceeded to deliver some chunky and tech lead House music. A distinct eastern European flavour could be felt in her music which was well received

by Plus Minus’ loyal following. In what seemed like a flash it was almost 3 am and a cheeky kill of the music just short of the time limit allowed for ‘one more tune’, to the delight of the crowd.

PARTY WITH THE IRISH

Irish Village have recently announced 2 huge events in the coming months. First up is Soul Jam on Thursday, October 5 and it will feature 80’s American soul star Alexander O’Neal, the “Criticize” artist will be joined at the open-air event by Omar, Jaki Graham and Mica Paris. Tickets for this event are only AED175, but I would advise grabbing yours soon as this amazing event is sure to sell out.

A few weeks later is one of those of you that grew up in 90’s there is a monstrous lineup awaiting. Live on the Lake presents REMIX 92 will feature 5ive, Boyzlife,Snap! Dr Alban, Robin S, Rozalla, Sonique, N-trance and C+C Music Factory. I am sure you will agree that is probably the best 90’s dance music line-up you will find this year.

THE PUZZLE

From the unbelievably talented artist Najoua Ajjour comes her next exciting art exhibition The Puzzle. Taking place at the Create Hub Gallery in Al Quoz on Thursday, September 28 she will fuse her recent exclusive collection of African Pop Art paintings and photographs with live African music and contemporary dance.

Performing on the night will be Yacine Kheddaoui, a talented guitarist from Algeria who will be showcasing his skills on the Oud. Also performing their own original material will be Moroccan group The Arfoud Brothers and Cameroon native Rudolf Ouea will be reinterpreting each artist’s musical creation with his gravity defying contemporary dancing. This will be an art exhibition with a twist and should not be missed. Entry is free and the event runs from 7pm to 10pm.

MUTEK COMES TO AE

Having just wrapped up the 18th edition of Mutek Festival in Montreal, it is clear that serious boundaries are and have been getting pushed with this landmark and game changing festival. Not just a feast for the ears, Mutek blends all manner of disciplines in to a pulsating collection of experimental club nights, panel discussions, labs, exhibitions and installations. Over the years, it has grown to become a network of creatives that spreads right across the globe. Obviously, we were extremely excited when it was recently announced that Dubai would be getting its very own edition of Mutek in the near future. Very little information has been announced yet regarding the line-ups or dates for that matter, but the fact that Mehdi Ansari from Analog Room is involved will give you some indication as to the calibre of production at Mutek AE and what involves. LIFE IS A BEACH

With the end of another hot a sticky summer in sight, Dubai is set to succumb to a deluge of outdoor parties.

However, one venue stands head and shoulders above most when it comes to al fresco dancing - Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE. The beach club behemoth which is famed for its crazy line-ups has been spending the summer months locking in some of electronic music’s most on point artists and Infusion Magazine has the pleasure of introducing them to you‌.

LEE CURTISS AND BUTCH / FRIDAY, SEPTMEBER 22

One of house music’s most notable crews of recent times is the Detroit collective Visionquest, made up of Ryan Crosson, Shaun Reeves and of course Lee Curtiss (formally including Seth Troxler).

All hugely successful artists in their own right, none more so than Lee Curtiss who, back in 2010 delivered the sublime “The Glow” on revered label Cityfox. Since then Lee has gone on to deliver on point productions for the likes of Catwash Records, Spectral Sound and of course his own Visionquest imprint.

Joining Lee on the infamous beach side terrace is a prolific artist that goes by the name of Butch. From the Watergate resident’s early electro techno outings on Craft Music and BluFin, to his more recent club hits such as his bumping edit “No Worries”, “Yellow Sunshine” EP and of course “Bliss” and “Dope” the list goes on and on. What you can guarantee is that Butch will deliver enough grooves to sink a battleship.

FRANCESCA LOMBARDO AND RAMPUE / FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

The following week on Friday, September 29 is the turn of Dubai favourite Francesca Lombardo. An extremely well-travelled jock, who has in since the beginning of year spun in Mexico, United States, Switzerland, Serbia, Ibiza, Belguim, Amsterdam and Paris and that only takes us to half way through the year. With Francesca blasting on to the house scene in 2012 with her debut EP “Changes” on Crosstown Rebels, this quickly paved the way for Francesca to become one of the busiest touring DJ’s on the circuit.

Lombardo will be partnering up with German artist Rampue, who has been more than making his presence felt on the European scene lately. With sets being delivered for Black Coffee’s Ibiza residency at Hi as well as performing at Berlin institutions such as Ritter Butzke, Kater Blau and Watergate. Rampue’s low slung melodic style is tailor made for the open-air climbs of Blue Marlin Ibiza UAE and with this German’s popularity soaring in the UAE this is not a set you want to miss.

PATRICE BAUMEL AND MARTIN BUTTIRCH / FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6

Two of the most in demand artists of the moment will be present on the same bill come Friday, October 6. Dutch artist Patrice Baumel has elevated himself to the top tier of electronic music with inspired productions for the likes of Kompakt, Get Physical Music and Afterlife to name but a few of the top imprints to have put out Patrice’s musical visions. With epic melodic techno bangers like “Glutes”, “Sorcery” and “Engage” in his locker this will be a certified roadblock.

Completing the double headline event is possibly the most talented producers of modern electronic music – Martin Buttrich. Martin’s studio prowess has been harnessed by a wide cross section of artist such as Loco Dice, Timo Maas, Tom Jones, Kelis, Bootsy Collins and Depeche Mode. Being an intrinsic part of the Desolat collective, Martin has also released on Planet E, Poker Flat Recordings, Culprit and the seminal Four:Twenty Recordings.

Now that the outdoor season is upon us, it is the return of the expansive outdoor venues to reveal what they have been working hard on during the closed season.

White at Meydan Racecourse has, since it opened 4 years ago, been at the very top of the premium club scene and their fourth season looks to be no different.

With the sprawling rooftop club undergoing a facelift, their mysterious teaser video has only added to the suspense for their opening URBN party on Saturday, September 23. In advance of further information being released by the super club, ranked #26 on the world

by DJ Mag, Infusion Magazine sat down with White General Manager Elie Saba to squeeze him for more juicy information…

Can you tell us what your working background was prior to becoming the GM of White?

While I studied Business Management in Beirut, I simultaneously started working as a bartender for ADD-MIND Group. Not long after I got promoted to bar manager, then entertainment manager and then White Beirut’s outlet manager. Once White Dubai opened four years ago, I moved to the UAE to run the club as a GM. I am now in charge of all nightlife outlets of ADD-MIND Group in the UAE (White, Mad, Toyroom etc.)

What would you say is the best/ worst thing about being General Manager of White?

I would say that one of the challenges is being responsible for 200+ staff traveling from all over the world and making sure that the venue is always working well and on the right track.

On the flip side, when the place is successful and you get in DJ Mag’s Top 100 Clubs in the world at # 26, it’s a great honour and satisfying feeling knowing that all the hard work paid off.

What would you say was your favourite event from last season?

It’s difficult to pick a favourite as we really did plenty of game-changing events, but if I had to highlight a couple they would definitely be the URBN anniversary we hosted, Jason Derulo, Armin Van Buuren as well as the closing party with Desiigner.

Do you think White will ever dabble in underground electronic music?

I think it is important to follow the musical trends on a global scale in order to satisfy your customers. Having said that, since tech and deep house have taken over the music scene and their target audience gets bigger by the day, White will be introducing some concepts in compliance with the mentioned sounds.

Season 4 is going to be an exciting challenge for us, as we are looking to further elevate the nightlife scene in the region and will be introducing 3 different concepts in 3 nights.

Basically, the venue will undergo a complete transformation (both production, decoration and entertainment wise) every night it is open which will even be visible from the entrance downstairs. This means we will have approximately 12 hours to transform the venue every day, something extremely challenging to maintain 3 nights a week, 8 months in a year.

However, as we are known for moving the barriers, and for introducing new things to the market, this is a challenge we are more than happy to partake in. Our ultimate goal is to bring our customer’s experience to another level.

What are you most excited about with the new season coming up?

I am excited about all the changes we are implementing. White will be the second club in the world to be doing these transformations.

As mentioned before, every night will have a different set up to provide a new experience unique to the night we are promoting. From

decorations, uniforms, make up, hair, stage, production, layout etc..

By creating substance, we will allow the concept and atmosphere of each night to keep people entertained, as opposed to the strategy of heavily relying on artists (whose performance does not exceed 15 min on average).

Can you let us in on any international guests that are coming to White this season?

As previously mentioned, we will not heavily rely on artists this season, but will have some big names regardless.

We will have a resident DJ every Friday (Mahmut Orhan) who will be playing alongside our international DJ’s. On Thursdays, we have our residents DJ Chabz and DJAD and on Saturday we have the awardwinning URBN team comprised of Dany Neville, DJ Charlsey, Devon Kosoko and Moky.

Who would you like to see perform most at White?

The Weekend and Ed Sheran.

JACQUES GREENE LIVE Canadian artist Jacques Greene discography and skills behind the decks and in the studio belies his younger years almost to point of being prodigious. Looking at Jacques’ rap sheet it reads like a who’s who of forward thinking electronic labels such as Martyn’s 3024, Glasgow’s LuckyMe, Sound Pellegrino, Night Slugs and his own Vase imprint. For a snap shot of where Jacques is right now look no further than his well-rounded debut long player on LuckyMe “Feel Infinite” and his recent high energy live performance for Boiler Room.

ROBAG WRUHME Completing the main stage line-up is Robag Wruhme, not a name you might be immediately familiar with but you will not regret catching this ever-elusive artist on a rare visit to Dubai. The Kompakt artist can usually be found catering to the more noteworthy festivals and clubs around Europe. Coming to prominence the late 90’s as one half of German duo Wighnomy Brothers, they are responsible for the ambient / minimal hybrid of “Wombat”. Robag has still retained his ambient roots and his set on the main stage will more than the set the tone for the night ahead.

GREEN ARENA DJ TENNIS After DJ Tennis played Groove on the Grass’ season 4 closing party it was a certainty that he would return. This time around the Life and Death boss man will headline the newly revamped Green stage. Having spent the whole summer on the road, Tennis has guested at Circoloco at DC-10 in Ibiza several times as well as headlining club and festival dates in Holland, Greece, Germany, North America and France.

NIGHTMARES ON WAX

Completing the Green stage is sunset specialist Nightmares on Wax who famed for his uniquely low slung grooves which are the bedrock of seminal albums “Carboot Soul” and “Smokers Delight”. There is by far no better way to eased in to your Friday evening than by a set from the Leeds native. The Warp Records artist has been doing this for a very long time and with tracks like the essential chill out track “Les Nuits” and the 2013 long player “Feelin’ Good”, there is no way that feet won’t be tapping and heads bopping come sun down.

RETURN TO BASE

Success story of last season was the arrival of a new power in the super club market and BASE quickly set about stamping their authority on premium music venue scene. With their opening weekend back in April becoming a certified roadblock with guests Axwell (Thursday) and 50 Cent (Friday) putting on one heck of a show it was clear that the game in Dubai was changing and BASE was leading the charge.

Fast-forward to season 2 and the D3 club are poised to the release an incredible array of artists on Dubai. Sticking with their one-two punch of dance music on Thursdays and hip-hop on Fridays, keep up at the back as there is lots to get through...Launching on Friday, September 22 Parisian celebrity DJ Magnum will be dropping by to help kick start BASE’s season in style, the following week Sylvain Armand will be raising the roof on Thursday, September 28 closely followed by DJ Cassidy the next evening. Starting October as they mean to go on BASE have enlisted an exciting range parties including Erick Morillo, a Defected party on the following week on Thursday, October 19 with Sonny Fodera, Sam Devine and Amine Edge & Dance and the big news is that on Thursday, November 16 the French powerhouse trio Apollonia will perform at the open-air club.

Soundstage K’DUN ALBAZ

Talented Jordanian percussionist K’dun Albaz answers some questions for Infusion Magazine…

My biggest gig ever was… a VIP opening party for the AD Formula 1 where Nicolas Cage and many more famous faces were attending.

I’m best known for… playing many different types of percussion and the hand pan instrument.

I’m most proud of… sending out positive and creative vibes through my music. My upcoming album, “City Vibes”, will be launched soon.

One thing you may not know about me is that…

I love to learn, I have an enthusiasm for meeting new people and sharing positivity.

This year, I’m playing at…

Ruth Chris’s Steakhouse at Dubai Marina as part of a roaming trio, but my diary is filling up with private and corporate bookings.

My sound is described as… chilled out overall, but on the hand pan the tracks I play with are upbeat.

If I had to live in one decade it would be… the 80’s.

The one piece of music kit I can’t live without is… my hand pan if I had to choose, but there are literally 1000’s of different percussive instruments in the world.

One thing you might not know about me is… that I always support local DJ’s and international DJ’s by promoting their upcoming releases, EP, remixes or albums in my monthly set or my monthly podcast on Dance FM. My worst job ever was…working in sales. Specially trying to sell a product you never liked.

What labels are you feeling at the moment? All Day I Dream.

Dubai clubbing scene is…booming and it’s in need of a big collaboration with the promoter, GM, local DJ’s and musicians. In my opinion, they should be careful and reveal their monthly line up ahead of time in order to give other outlets the chance to bring new talents to the scene.

I am really proud of…bringing my sound to Dubai and pushing my DJ name forward to the scene.

What track could you drop in every set? My favorite track is “Grass Is Greener” (Larse Remix) by Phonique.

My biggest DJ achievement is…that I was always chosen to do the warm up sets for the International DJ’s. It’s a big challenge until today.

If you could DJ in any decade which would it be?

I would like to DJ back in the days where electronic music wasn’t heard and where the crowd use to go with their dancing shoes to enjoy the music.

If I could go back to back with any other DJ it would be…I would love to DJ back to back with all the local DJ’s to name few Pablo Abouzeid, Ziad Ghosn, JADE, Aidin Karami, Jixo & Danz, Frederic Stone, Michka, Smokingroove, Stu Todd and Frak Fu.

These could be paired with a cute dress, jeans or even for their intended purpose of the gym. I have teamed mine with black leggings, a funky black, dusky pink and green floral shirt, rose gold love heart pendant and rose gold love heart earrings with a black and bronze cuff. I will be looking past my usual sneaker brands going forward and seeking out the new Puma collection, so in a nutshell, go Puma.

JUST LANCE

Having been part of the core crew of DJ’s that entertain thousands of revellers each weekend at Barasti Beach Club for some time, Lance Van Breda, or Just Lance to you and me knows more than a thing or two about Dubai and how to make it move on the dancefloor. Infusion Magazine picked Lance’s brain about his time in Dubai…

For those that don’t know you can you tell us a little about your career in music so far?

I started deejaying in the mid-eighties (yes, I am old) back in Cape Town, South Africa. What is considered party anthems today was underground then. I was what is considered a “party deejay” but found the “underground” sound more attractive which inevitably lead me to start playing venues where I could fulfil the desire to play what I truly loved to a more discerning audience. This was not genre specific. I played everything from hip-hop to drum and bass to house to techno (yes, there is a difference mom!). My roots have always been in jazz, funk and soul and back then, house music was essentially that with a four to the floor kick. It also had mass appeal so I ended up playing more house. I do however like playing a bit of everything so occasionally my playlists can be pretty random. If it sounds good and makes my err ermm “hair” stand up I will play it.

How long have you been in Dubai?

I’ve been here for seventeen, almost eighteen years now. Has it really been that long?! I had no intention of staying as like many, I thought of the city as a big bus stop and that I would inevitably move onto somewhere with, shall we say a more “western” appeal.

Human nature will always lead us to believe “the grass is greener”.

Well I think I have found my patch and am very proud to call Dubai my home and with no hesitation say #mydubai.

What made you decide to move to Dubai?

Initially, love. My then girlfriend had started working for a local airline and I came to visit her. I fell in love with Dubai, the diversity of cultures, the contrast of sky scraping buildings and the beauty of the desert, the wonderful balance of Middle Eastern tradition and the forward thinking of the city’s leaders. So love brought me here, and love made me stay. Our city (can I hash tag that) rocks on so many levels.

What was the scene like when you moved here?

Back then, Bur Dubai and Al Mena were the designated hot spot areas. We had Charlie C. The King of Planetarium at Wafi.

They were the only venue booking “named” deejays regularly.

I remember going to see Robert Owens there. The atmosphere in the venue was electrifying. Then we had Ollie Martin at the original Rock Bottom. In my first few years here most of the clubs had bands as the headline act and the deejays only played in their breaks so that last set at Rocky’s was the only real time he got to let his bald head of hair down. I remember him dropping Who Da Funk’s “Shiny Disco Balls” way before it got an official release. The place went bananas!! I guess Bong was the first promoter to put on a regular underground night at the Aviation Club and his deejay Kennedy Stephenson would kill it every Friday. Oh no wait. Before that they used to have a party on the beach at DIMC with the late great Karl McQueen. It was a 2am stop and every week the crowd would literally rock the dj box until he carried on playing. The venue had to cut the power to disperse the masses. Later on Zinc open it’s doors with Mr. Greg Stainer at the helm. Not quite as underground but he pushed the boundaries as much as he could and it was always a solid party.

Since moving to Dubai how have you seen the music and club scenes evolve?

This is a tricky question to answer as I am most likely going to get a lot of flack for my response. Back then the audience was hungry for something different. Something new. I am not being music genre specific here either. Somewhere along the lines they have lost that hunger. It’s almost like there is this mystical magnetic switch that triggers something in their heads when they step onto UAE soil that makes them feel some sort of self-entitlement. The plethora of social media posts about punters requesting the deejay change the music to something they know and then throwing their toys out

the crib when they don’t get their way is astonishing! By it’s very definition a request is a selfish act. Imagine going to a rock concert and asking Axl Rose to sing Billy Ray Cyrus. Only you have a hankering for an achy breaky heart and I will bet real dirhams not even Billy wants to here G&R belt out that barndance floor filler.

What do you think is the best thing about the Dubai scene at the moment?

I may sound like I am contradicting myself here but I want to say the crowd never ceases to amaze me. A great example of this happened just last week. I got to my residency expecting to be inundated with requests for the usual “radio hits” or more politically correct, “accessible music” but instead I was pleasantly surprised. Mr Todd had done a stellar job on warm up and I could just roll on with a non-commercial sound. The crowd got proper into it and I found myself play all the tracks I usually reserve for a more appreciative audience (yes I too can be selfish with music so if you children behave you will be rewarded you with aural pleasure). What a great night! Thank you China Grill.

How do you feel the scene could be improved upon?

Personally I would like to see more live venues. Especially ones catering to soul, funk and jazz. Those genres cultivate and nurture talent. That R&B and hip-hop that you all love so much… Guess where it’s roots lay ;) Being a Dubai based DJ can be demanding, what do you do when you are not behind the decks?

I am really into sport and am fortunate to have the luxury of being off on most Saturday and Sunday afternoons so I spend those days on the couch in front of the television. I am also an avid motorcyclist so in the cooler months I go out riding with my friends.

Where will we be able to catch you in action this season?

I am very blessed to be a part of the Barasti Beach team of deejays, so along with Martin Metcalf, Tom Ferguson, Marc Trowsdale, Rohan Nunez, Scott Foreshaw and the legend Greg Stainer we rock it out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

China Grill at the Westin is my other residency and along with Stu Todd I do Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays in there.

IN FOCUS: SPECIAL AGENT In the coming issues, we will be looking at all manner of issues arising from the music industry, but for now we are looking at entertainment agents and what do they do. Love them or hate them agents are a fundamental driving force within the UAE and international music and entertainment industry. These days agents predominantly advertise jobs online via social media, websites and email outs. We’ve all seen the typical post ‘Looking for open format DJ for Friday.

Urgent requirement’. Today we’ll get into the basics of how agent/ performer relations work. This will lay the groundwork for future articles discussing some of the potential issues that regularly arise and how to avoid them.

Simply put, an agent works as an intermediary between a client and performer to ensure both parties deliver what is expected of them. In short, performers want fair booking terms and to be paid in a timely manner. Client’s want a reliable and entertaining performer. Seems simple, right? That’s how things should work but all too often there are issues on both sides of this agreement.

As a consequence, the term ‘agent’ comes with a variety of connotations. For clients, it sounds like unnecessary conditions and expense. For performers, it sounds like late or non-payment. We’ve all been burnt at some point or another.

However, this perspective of agents is not completely fair.

Fundamentally a successful agent is the one that can keep the performers and the client happy. They are supreme negotiators.

There will be negotiations, compromises and a push and pull from all parties. Often the negotiations turn into a tug of war of wants and needs that is complex to navigate. It’s a tricky business and I have the utmost respect to the agents who handle this role successfully and still remain in business.

The most common performer oversight is that when you’re dealing with an agent you’re actually doing business. Sure, be an artist but make sure to do your business too! Often agents are musically or artistically minded individuals who have become involved in the business side of entertainment. This equips them with a wellrounded viewpoint on the way successful entertainment business should be handled. Some, especially those on the higher end of the scale are legal tyrants with 20 page contracts stipulating all sorts of crazy conditions upon the signed performer. All too often agents are strictly business and the bottom line with business is money.

Subsequently some agents will compromise ‘artistic integrity’ for the sell. Maybe you’re a dubstep DJ, but they’ve pressured you to play commercial music as you’re the only one available for the gig.

Some will do quite the opposite and are inflexible and not open to compromise. These ones generally go out of business quite quickly.

Others are cunning, have zero sense of CSR and ignore business ethics. I’ve even had one rob me 4 months’ remuneration to make a quick and easy buck and get away with it. The best ones supply solid performers, get them paid and make the booking of them simple and cost effective for their client.

As a performer, you’ll want to be wary of who you choose to work with. Ask yourselves these basic questions when dealing with an agent’s proposed engagement in the UAE: *How did you get in contact? *Are they reputable? *What do your trusted peers say about them? *Do they operate under a trade license? *What paperwork details are there? *Are the conditions fair? *What are the payment terms? *What happens if they don’t pay? It’s a good idea once you’ve found an agent you click with to work with them regularly. Good ones are far and few between. Want suggestions on who is reputable to work with?

MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND With the price of banana’s going through the roof lately and a 2-bed tree house still costing around the same as it was 5 years ago, it is little wonder that some are feeling the pinch a little while out shaking what your momma gave you. Some venues in Dubai should really check what is going on in the real world right now and consider lowering their prices in line with current affairs. How some venues can charge AED20-30 more than others for the same beverage is beyond me. If parties were just a little bit cheaper then the clubs in Dubai would be much better subscribed. Don’t get me wrong, I have been to some great parties this summer, but comes with a price tag. So, for all the party animals out there, venues please think about your prices a bit and act accordingly.
