What's On at Classic 2021

Page 1

How exciting it is to have another Inglis Sales Series on our doorstep. The Classic Sale kicks off what we are sure will be another big year for our clients and continues an exciting time of year for the industry. It’s fantastic to have so many of you back in Sydney for Classic and we can’t wait to host you at Riverside for what will be another big week of entertainment both in and out of the sales auditorium. This ‘What’s On’ booklet outlines events of the week surrounding the sale and the Millennium Race Day. The main event—the 2021 Classic Yearling Sale—will again be preceded by a range of activities for buyers, vendors and general racing enthusiasts. From the Westfield Movie Night at Riverside to our annual Heineken Welcome Drinks and the launch of the Aperol Garden, the build up to the race day and auction will be filled with entertainment. The Millennium Race Day will take centre stage on Saturday February 6 as many of the best 2YOs in the country battle it out for the $2m purse on offer in the main event. The race day, which will also feature the $1m Inglis Sprint for 3YOs, will be held at Randwick for the first time in a partnership with the ATC that will see our feature race held at Sydney’s premier racecourse annually. The Millennium and the Classic Sale have a strong affiliation already with both Millennium winners— Castelvecchio and Prime Star—graduates of the Classic Sale, purchased for $150,000 and $55,000 respectively. Once a week of inspections and the big race day are done, attention centres on the Riverside auditorium for the Classic Yearling Sale. We are, as always, hugely grateful for the support of the sale by the breeders and vendors and are committed to working with them to help achieve an outstanding set of results again in 2021. This year a total of 803 yearlings have been catalogued—620 in the Main Book and 183 in the Highway Session—as we stick to the tried and proven format of a three-day sale.

Pleasingly, the catalogue includes the progeny of 108 different stallions offered by 76 individual vendors and I’m sure is filled with future racetrack stars such as former graduates like She Will Reign, Classique Legend, Extreme Choice, Vow And Declare, Pippie, Hellbent, Yankee Rose and In Her Time to name just a handful. The value available at Inglis sales continues to shine through with racetrack results. Since 2018 Inglis auctions have produced 54 G1 winners, 28 G1 winners that could have been purchased for $100,000 or less—almost double our nearest competitor. Inglis sales have also produced more G1 winners overall, more Australian G1-winning 2YOs, more Australian Group winners, more G1-winning colts, more G1-winning fillies, more winners of the $1m+ races and more Hong Kong winners than the nearest competitor. In the past four years alone, the Classic Sale has produced the winners of a Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper, The Everest, Blue Diamond, Randwick Guineas and VRC Derby among many other G1 races. As we continue to navigate our way through Covid-19, the year ahead will no doubt throw up more challenges again, as 2020 did. But as an industry last year, we proved we can adapt to the ever-changing scenarios and I have absolute confidence 2021 will provide many more memorable moments, successful auctions, and racetrack results for breeders, vendors and buyers alike. Classic will be conducted with Inglis’ Covid-Safe plan in place at Riverside which allows for a range of hospitality options including Ringside Dining, Barn Pavilions, The 1867 Bar, The Newmarket Restaurant, the Inglis Day Spa and many others. We are excited by the immense appetite of trainers, syndicators, new owners and general industry participants to be involved with the Inglis Select Sales Series and I’m looking forward to seeing and working with all of our fantastic clients again in 2021. Regards, Mark Webster Managing Director

Teresa MacGinley Only a stone’s throw from the city, Woolloomooloo Wharf is a one-stop shop for foodies in Sydney. Whether you’re after Asian, Italian or Steakhouse it doesn’t disappoint. The Tilbury Hotel is only a short walk from the Wharf to finish the night off with an Espresso Martini, or two.

Jonathan D’Arcy If you’re looking for somewhere to watch the game or races over a couple of beers you can’t beat the Royal Oak in Double Bay. No matter what code you follow it’s sure to be on one of the many screens.

North Bondi Fish is the perfect location to take advantage of daylight savings in the evenings. Grab a table on the deck and take in the atmosphere of Sydney’s most famous beach with a glass of Rosé or Aperol in hand.

Harry Bailey There are plenty of gyms in Sydney that offer casual passes and what feels like an F45 on every street corner. I typically like to work out in the morning and head to Coogee for a swim in the ocean, it’s a great way to start the day.
