welcome It’s great to be back in Melbourne for the 2021 Premier Yearling Sale. To be able to hold Victoria’s primary yearling sale in the middle of the autumn racing carnival in one of the world’s best cities is an honour and is a week of the year we at Inglis all very much look forward to. Premier Week is always a fun one and this year we hope to make it even more of a spectacle for you, our clients and friends.
Mark Webster, Managing Director
While the three day Premier Sale is of course the feature of the week, we also have a series of events in and around the auction that this What’s On Booklet details.
From welcome drinks to race meetings and other functions, we hope to make this period as enjoyable and memorable for everybody as possible. The Premier Sale has been a highlight of the Southern Hemisphere yearling sales season for decades and its strength in more recent years has been nothing short of extraordinary, especially its graduates’ success. The likes of Ole Kirk – Australia’s most valuable racehorse, the ‘Giant Killer’ Gytrash, mighty filly September Run, two of the recent World’s Best Sprinters in Nature Strip and Santa Ana Lane, the Hong Kong superstar Beat The Clock, 2YO stars like Written By and Seabrook, the NZ Derby hero Crown Prosecutor – whatever type of champion you’re after, it’s available at Premier. The sale has produced 16 G1 winners since 2018 - a remarkable statistic for one individual sale - nine of which could have been purchased for $100,000 or less such as Kenedna, Spright, Hey Doc etc. Even more remarkable is since 2019, Premier has produced 15 winners of the big $1m+ races in Australia – more than any other individual yearling sale in the Southern Hemisphere. The value available at Inglis sales continues to shine through too. At the time of print, Inglis had produced 55 G1 winners since 2018, of which 27 could have been purchased for $100,000 or less. We have also produced more G1 winners overall, more Australian G1-winning 2YOs, more Australian Group winners, more G1-winning colts, more G1-winning fillies, more winners of the $1m+ races and more Hong Kong winners. A significant amount of these have come off Victorian farms and it’s this support from the local Victorian industry that has seen the Premier Sale especially remain so strong for so long. This year is no exception with a larger than ever number of Victorians offering their entire crop of yearlings through the Premier Sale, rather than spreading them around a range of different sales.
The catalogue of 804 is arguably the strongest single Premier catalogue since 2008 when the likes of Black Caviar and Starspangledbanner were offered. The sale will again be held in the spectacularly renovated Oaklands auditorium. The overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received from all participants the past two years since the Oaklands renovations took place has been justification for our reinvesting back into the industry to create a theatre-like auditorium for our clients. Whether you’re looking to buy a yearling, talk to industry participants or simply observe how a yearling auction operates, everybody is welcome at Oaklands during Premier, free of charge. I look forward to seeing many of you from this Sunday to celebrate all things about the Victorian breeding industry. Regards, Mark Webster Managing Director

Love Melbourne while at Premier
“If you’re staying at Crown, the Botanical Gardens is just a short walk across the Yarra River, a must see in Melbourne. For those wanting to get the heart rate up, a couple of laps around the famous outside running track (the Tan), is sure to do so. Be sure to wear your best lycra, you’ll see the who’s who of Melbourne…”
“Take in the street art on AC/DC lane on your way to dinner at Pastuso where you should order the ceviche and wash it down with a couple of pisco sours until you feel like you could be in South America and then wander up to Siglo to enjoy a night cap or two on the Parisian inspired rooftop terrace overlooking Spring Street. The closest thing to an overseas trip you will get at the moment!”
- Will Stott
- Sinead Flannery
“If you enjoy waterfront dining then Melbourne’s South Wharf promenade is the place to be. Beautifully restored 19th century heritage sheds housing a number of cafes, restaurants and bars situated along the Yarra River. Offering a number of cuisines, there is something for everyone’s taste buds and only a short walk from Crown.” - Brittany Hussey
“If staying at Crown and you want to look at a different kind of animal than a horse for a change, why not visit the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium. It’s on the Yarra River and a short walk from the casino.” - Mark Dodemaide
