ASEAN 50TH GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY
The Trans Resort, Bali, Indonesia 20 – 23 September 2017
BACKGROUND of The First ASEAN Public Relations Regional Conference 2017 Major Theme: Communicating ASEAN in Global Competitiveness There has been an interesting phenomenon in the way a citizen of one country who has lived and worked overseas are now coming back to his/her mother land. This phenomenon is also growing big in ASEAN member states. They are attracted because global growth center has moved from the West to the East, and ASEAN is among the world fastest growing region now promising greater prosperity and joy of living. Their return enrich further the ASEANs’ DNA and talents which already open and savvy in communicating and relating to international cultures and global communities. ASEAN is a harmonized regional grouping NOT homogenized. To foster its growth, ASEAN needs brainpower of its own citizen living abroad to come home. And there are good reasons for this Diaspora. Many citizens of ASEAN have lived and worked overseas, and many occupy strategic and respectable position in all professions globally. ASEAN needs to be relevant if we want these brains to return to this region and there have been positive impact as a result of global changes in this millennium. The world is getting unified. Regional blocks are no longer beneficial. Instead, the spirit of protectionism has been replaced with reciprocal promotion between countries. Countries or regions promote each other’s potential and markets become unified and integrated. Another miracle in this millennium is the global connectivity made possible by the advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The growth of ICT allow people now connect to almost anyone in the world instantly with marginal cost. This in turn help foster full participation by all the people in matters that important to their lives. Governing a state is now under a close and immediate scrutiny by its citizens. If it is important to them, the issue cannot be hidden or left unattended. The state is forced to increase its PR capacity to deal with this. This foster transparency and cleaner or more open government. ASEAN is not all sunshine and rainbow because it is among the world’s most fragile region for natural disasters. In the framework of the danger of climate change, global warming is probably the single most alarming issue, and ASEAN with its fragile geographic position needs to take a lead in mitigating this issue. ASEAN member states need to strategize its communication strategy with its neighboring region and the rest of the Pacific nations particularly in disaster communications and management through education and people’s empowerment programs.
ASEAN is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, hence it is the time for Regional PR conference to discuss some landmark of anniversaries issues in PR spheres. So, the discussion and cross cutting Agenda for the regional conference must embody among others are as follows: • Cascading down ASEAN identity into global Community • Communicating ASEAN Brand and Branding. Refining ASEAN brand to gain better global understanding what ASEAN is, what is aspires to become and what distinguishes ASEAN from the rest of regional global community • Cross culture communication particularly among millennia generations • Integration versus harmonization • Lesson learnt from European Unity
ASEAN and The world. Diaspora of ASEAN citizens with global residences. This topics will discuss the potential ASEAN brain return to their home lands after pursuing better living, education, career and livelihood globally. The aim is to build ASEAN, for ASEAN but with a global relevance and DNA. ASEAN citizen should be the most compatible people in various global development aspects. But it must start at home. So, going away to come home is a good discussion topic. How PR can help bridge cultural divide and enhance diaspora’s communication skills rooted in their distinct AMS culture and social, political and livelihood settings.
ASEAN for ASEAN • Determining key PR role to accelerate people to people communication. • How PR can help promote better understanding in settling ASEAN internal disputes such as border clashes, religious radicals, territorial claims, standardization in trade and industry, and educational system. • Financial inclusion covering investors’ relations and venture capitals particularly for start ups. • Communicating in public spheres particularly by the millenia generations. PR should educate the public how to best use internet and social media to reduce conflict, defamation, narcism, hate speech, indecent content and many more bad content in social media setting.
The Pre-Conference Events The 1st ASEAN Public Relations Conference (APRC) pre-conferences features sessions that offer important networking and professional development opportunities for all public relations professionals on 20 September 2017. Professional development includes the Association Workshop which is a free event given by Global Alliance of Public Relations and Communication Management for the Head of PR Associations. This workshop aims to share strategies on how to make the associations become sustainable and beneficial to its members. Since the registration is for free, participants will only have to pay for the conference fee. In addition, ARRC also will give opportunities for academicians to participate in the Call for Paper event. The theme will be in line with the conference’s general theme and we have gathered notable international research fellows to review the papers submitted. For this particular event, participants has to pay for the register fee as stated. The pre-conference event will also host a Gala Dinner that will provide a stage to give a PR Excellence Award to ASEAN corporations and organizations, and also PR professionals in the region who were already chosen winners by a respectable award-giving body or associations. This will highlight one of ASEAN PR Network’s (APRN) aims of giving prestigious recognition to the region’s best practices in PR. And lastly, the pre-conference event will also include the launching of the 1st APRN’s Coffee-table book “The Spirit of ASEAN” which will feature ASEAN’s list of 50 Best Companies.
