elcome back to Southmoreland Park! This is such a special milestone in the history of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival Strauss, Festival Founder (left) with because it marks 30 years of fulfilling the Marilyn Sidonie Garrett,Executive Artistic Director vision of our beloved Founder, Marilyn Strauss who brought free Shakespeare to Kansas City. Despite all the challenges due to the pandemic, we have returned to our park home stronger and more eager than ever to bring a powerful and popular story to vivid life. We’ve missed the connection with our audience, being under the night sky and sharing space together as a community. Yet even during the years we’ve been distanced we have received our community’s support and are so grateful to all of you for sustaining us until now, when we can gather again. Romeo and Juliet reminds us of the power of love and the cost of hate in a story with some of the most beautiful and expressive language in all literature. There’s a reason we’re still telling this story 427 years after it was written – it resonates with us all. If you’ve encountered this story in an earlier part of your life, you may find that this time you will connect to this story in a different way and relate to characters that you wouldn’t have in a previous viewing. I do hope that each of you can sense the fresh “bud of love” that begins our story and feel our characters’ heartbreak as “these violent delights have violent ends”. Welcome back to the lawn and the night sky and the soaring words of Shakespeare. Thank you to our Kansas City community for all your good will over 30 years…onward to our next 30! Gratefully, Sidonie

Romeo and Juliet Synopsis

A

n age-old vendetta between two powerful families erupts into bloodshed. A group of masked Montagues risk further conflict by gatecrashing a Capulet party. A young lovesick Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with Juliet Capulet, who is due to marry her father’s choice, the County Paris. With the help of Juliet’s nurse, the women arrange for the couple to be married the next day by Friar Laurence, but Romeo’s attempt to halt a street fight leads to the death of Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, for which Romeo is banished. In a desperate attempt to be reunited with Romeo, Juliet follows the Friar’s plot and fakes her own death. The message fails to reach Romeo, and believing Juliet dead, he takes his life in her tomb. Juliet wakes to find Romeo dead beside her and kills herself. The grieving families agree to end their feud. — Source: Shakespeare Birthplace Trust
