hank you for being with us for our 27 th season in Southmoreland Park. This year is special for two reasons; we are remembering our Founder and Muse, Marilyn Strauss and dedicating our season production to her memory and we have expanded our season to reach more people and share the wonders of storytelling in Southmoreland Park with our community. Because of Marilyn, we expanded our mission to include not only the works of Shakespeare, but also Shakespeare-inspired works. And although she can’t be with us to see it come to fruition, this year’s story about Elizabethan theatre, the Queen, actors and managers all combined in an imagined story about Shakespeare’s life was certainly something she was eager for us to share. In the future, Shakespeare’s works shall continue to be the core stories that we will choose to tell – after all he’s the greatest playwright in the English language! And yet, we will continue to be inspired by our adventurous Founder and find times throughout the year and other venues to tell stories that the Bard of Avon inspired; all to increase an appreciation for and understanding of his plays. Tonight, enjoy this story which includes “comedy, love and a bit with a dog.”

Kansas City native, Marilyn was truly a force of nature – not only in how she lived her life, but in how her grit and determination created and built the Shakespeare Festival into what it is today. An accomplished former Broadway producer and lecturer on American plays, she returned to Kansas City in 1990 and – at the urging of her friend, legendary producer Joseph Papp – set out to create the only Shakespeare Festival in a three-state area. Twenty-seven years later, Marilyn’s dream is still alive and prospering. It is her legacy to this great city, and for that we all owe her a debt of gratitude. Marilyn’s favorite Shakespeare play was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We will build upon her vision and her dream. We will miss her light. “I have had a most rare vision. I had a dream…” A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Act IV, sc. 1

Shakespeare in Love Synopsis

ill Shakespeare is a known but struggling poet, playwright and actor who not only has sold his next play to two different producers but now faces a far more difficult problem: he is bereft of ideas and has yet to begin writing his next masterpiece. He is in search of a muse, but all attempts fail him until he meets the beautiful Viola de Lesseps. She loves the theatre and would like nothing more than to take to the stage but is forbidden from doing so

as only men can be actors. Viola is also a great admirer of Shakespeare’s works. Dressing as a man by the name of Thomas Kent, she auditions and is ideal for a part in his next play. Shakespeare soon sees through her disguise and they begin a love affair, one they know cannot end happily as he is already married and she has been promised to the artistocrat, Lord Wessex. As the company rehearses his new play, Will and Viola’s love is transferred to the written page leading to the masterpiece that is Romeo and Juliet.
