NADINE HARVEY What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? Almost every single person says, “oh, that wasn’t so bad” after I pull the first line. Don’t freak yourself out before the tattoo even starts! Remember to stay calm and cool! Also, soda is great for anyone that feels woozy easily! Sugar and water is your friend in this situation ⸺ What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My friends and family were very supportive. However, the first few my parents were hesitant to the idea and didn’t think I could make it. After I started to do some large pieces they were convinced ⸺ What would you say is your favorite part of the job? I love meeting and interacting with new people. It’s so much fun to hear everyone’s backstory to personal tattoos and being able to make their

idea come to life! What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? I got my first tattoo at 14 and have been very interested in the industry ever since. Future plans for college went right out the window once the tattoo artist pulled the first line. I wanted to become one right away! However, I had to finish high school first. Once I graduated I visited every single shop in my area asking for an apprenticeship. However, no one would take me at the time due to being full or they would say “tattooing as a whole is trending down right now, we don’t have anything for you to do.” Although that was disappointing, I kept studying art and started to pursue modeling. A few years later I went to get a tattoo at a shop in California and next thing you know they offered me a spot as an apprentice! Who and what influences you to create your work? Client >

backstories for each tattoo is what really motivates me to push myself. No matter what the tattoo is I always put 110% into it, but the really cool ones that have deep meaning to the client always help to bring out my creative side Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I would do around 99% of tattoos that come in, mostly because if I say no, they will just find someone else to do it. I would rather my clients get tattooed in a safe and sterile environment by a professional artist rather than go to someone’s garage. I always try to persuade my clients away from the more visible tattoos such as face and hand tattoos. The 1% of tattoos that I refuse to do, no matter what the circumstances, are anything on the eyeballs or racist/offensive tattoos to a group of people What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? The tattoo industry is really growing, just look at the advancements that we have had in the last couple of years. We have gone from coil machines to rotary machines, tattoo shops are popping up everywhere, and the level of skill in the industry has shot up. However, we still have a long way to go Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? Yes! I have a ton of bad tattooing experiences. One time it was late at night and a group of girls came in to get some small butterfly tattoos together. All of the girls wanted to get the same butterfly tattoo, which was small and fine line. Right after I pull my first three lines the client starts to vomit everywhere! She vomited all over my station, herself, and me. Right after that she runs outside our front door

and throws up for a few minutes. Her vomit blocked everyone else from being able to leave or enter the shop. While she was outside I started to clean myself and my station. A few more minutes go by and she walks back into the shop, without saying a word, sits in the vomit filled chair, looks at me and says “okay I’m ready to go again.” I told her to wait a few more minutes and to go clean up a little bit. After everything was finally clean, I finished the tattoo. The smell of vomit lingered at my station the rest of the night What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Stick with it. Going through your apprenticeship can be extremely challenging and you will probably want to give up a million times. Just stick it through, it will be worth it in the end! What makes you different from other tattoo artists? I love seeing people’s lives change through tattoos. Some people leave looking way more confident than they did when they first walked in. Others leave happier than ever with a sentimental memento. I love when I can really get into the mind of my client and blow away their expectations. What makes me different from everyone else is not only do I want to give you the best tattoo possible, but I want to give you a better tattoo than you ever imagined What is your favorite style of tattoo to do and why? Fine line horror tattoos. I definitely love a ton of styles, but fine line horror is my favorite! Outside of tattooing I love creepy things and horror movies, so horror tattoos come pretty natural for me. Making eye-catching gruesome details is so much fun for me! When people ask me “How in the world did you come up with that idea” I know my job is complete! ✕

How long have you been tattooing? I started my tattoo career in the beginning of 2005 as an apprentice at the Ink Station in New Jersey. I opened my own shop called Poppycock Tattoo in Wilmington, Delaware on December 1st 2009. The reason I initially got interested in tattooing was that I’ve always been obsessed with body adornment. I used to draw all over myself even as a little girl, much to my mother’s dismay.

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Go in excited. Your artist should discuss everything as they go. Try not to listen to friends who are trying to scare you about placement vs pain. It’s permanent! Get it where you want it!

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? Very supportive. In fact, I tattooed everyone in my family even though no one had tattoos when I first started.

What would you say is your favorite part of the job? My regulars. They are great to hang with for the day and make coming to work fun. My husband was actually a regular that I tattooed for a year before he asked me out!

Who and what influences you to create your work? My favorite tattoo artist is 1 Maud Wagner, she paved the way as the first known female tattoo artist in the US. Plus, I love 2Amund Dietzel, 3Lyle Tuttle, 4Percy Waters, and 5Bert Grimm.

3. Tuttle: @lyle.tuttle

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I’ve tattooed a bunch of crazy places, including a taint! I don’t do racist or gang related tattoos.

What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? It keeps progressing. It’s now considered a form of actual art. Tattoos are for everyone, and I love that!

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Work on personal art projects (not just for clients), try to participate in local art shows and draw ALL the time. It helps keep you going mentally and will make you a stronger artist. There’s always room for improvement! ✕

I was always interested into tattoos as a kid growing up. I thought they were a beautiful way of expressing art. I would always stop and ask people to show me their tattoo. A big piece always stands out better and looks like it was meant to be there What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? Everyone was very surprised, but supportive What would you say is your favorite part of the job? Seeing someone feeling better about themselves and more comfortable with their body Who and what influences you to create your work? Other artists, illustrations, movies, architecture, and geometry Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) So far I haven’t received any unreasonable requests :D What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? I wonder if one day there will be a machine advanced enough to replace us. A sort of tattoo printer on human bodies. Probably just a matter of time Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? clients that I get so excited to visit with What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? I never had imagined being a tattoo artist until my boyfriend mentioned something. I was getting more heavily tattooed at the time and I would always bring in my own drawings. The tattoo artist I was going to at the time asked if I had ever considered tattooing. I decided that this must be the sign from the universe Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I definitely try to talk people out of getting their boyfriend or girlfriends name. However, I wouldn’t do any tattoos that require you to be without underwear What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? Seeming it is more common to meet people with tattoos rather than without, I can only imagine the industry is going to continue to rapidly grow. I guess my fear is some technology that makes getting a tattoo easier and faster than ever Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? A few months ago, I was tattooing a lady that was in her sixties. It was her first tattoo. She was getting a very simple wrist tattoo that literally took me about 3–5 minutes. I had just finished up the tattoo and she says she isn’t feeling very well. I went to get her something to get her blood sugar up and she slumps over in the chair [and] starts making these crazy gasping noises. I thought she was going to go into a seizure. Thankfully her daughter was there and was able to tend to her. She was totally fine after the whole situation. I thought I killed her What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Tattooing is a lifestyle. You have to love it because it is a grind. You have to give yourself grace in the process. ✕

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? First of all, eat before your appointment. Secondly, get the tattoo where you want it. It is temporary pain for a permanent tattoo. Third, Start with something smaller so you can get an idea of what to expect if you want bigger pieces. I would also recommend getting something that is more meaningful if you’re having anxiety about not knowing what to get but wanting a tattoo ⸺ What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? No one was surprised. If anything they were like “finally!” My grandma isn’t the biggest fan of tattoos but she supports me. I have been slowly but surely tattooing the cousins, so I am not sure how she feels about that one ⸺ What would you say is your favorite part of the job? How intimate it can be. I get to sit with someone, one on one, and get to know them! If they are working on a sleeve or repeat clients, I really get to know them. I have some

When he is not piercing or managing Rich Ink you can find him working on his house, driving his monster truck, and enjoying spending quality time with his family. Daniel specializes in constellation ear piercings What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of piercing? Find a mentor that will take you under their wing and always stay loyal to that person. Then I would say practice. Practice makes perfect! What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first piercing? (A piercing virgin) When going to get pierced for the first time you should research your shop and the piercer. Choose someone with a portfolio that illustrates and highlights your piercing of choice. Don’t watch YouTube videos, people build up too much unnecessary anxiety when they see people yelling or crying in those videos. Bring one support person not a crowd. Too many opinions can cause confusion. Trust your instincts What did your family and friends think about you getting into the piercing business? Luckily, I have a very supportive wife Tiffanie Ruiz. Together we put everything we had to get Rich Ink started. We started Rich Ink during economic hardships when many people were losing there’s homes. So our family was a little skeptical. We definitely struggled the first years. I am glad we stuck it out because now we are blessed with amazing artists and a loyal customer base What was it that initially sparked your interest in piercing? Initially my wife Tiffanie had the idea to open Rich Ink to highlight her talented brother Richard Holman. The shop is named after him! I tried my hand at tattooing and that didn’t pan out. So I decided to try piercing. It was super difficult to get anyone to apprentice me. I actually had to go out of state were I trained with Dr. Harvey. I continued to grow as a piercer and learn from Doug aka Dr.

Owning a business is certainly not easy and takes 100% everyday What would you say is your favorite part of the job? First, I would like to say piercing is not a job it is a passion. Over the past two years I have been making house calls and participating in pop-up events. That’s been exciting. I’ve pierced many artists and influencers such as Demi Lavato, Charli D’amelio, Lucy Hale, Logan Paul and many more Are there any piercings you would refuse to do? I would never refuse a piercing Have you ever had a bad piercing experience and what was it? I’ve had people scratching me, kick me, grab me and even faint on me. As I said before people build up anxiety and that anxiety can lead to spontaneous movements. It’s that fight or flight response What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? The industry is always evolving the type of work being produced now is phenomenal. As for piercings, people LOVE to get pierced. Whether it is a simple lobe piercing or an exotic piercing the outcome is same. Pure joy! People can’t wait to show it off the their friends Have you ever had a bad piercing experience and what was it? I always had an interest in tattoos. I started getting them when I was I think 13 or 14? My first one of course you know not professionally done but homemade. Later down the road a friend of mine kept on bugging me about it trying to get me into tattooing (lol). Here I am now doing it.

What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? So do you want me to set you up for your next appointment?because you’ll be coming in for a couple more (lol)

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? Well at the time tattoos were still looked upon as either criminals or Low lives having them, so my family thought I was going to starve to death but I was already starving already with Hollywood jobs (lol) as for friends well they were my canvas when I first began so they were on board

As a kid I always been drawing you know seeing morning cartoons and then drawing them out later on, Later on influences were like horror movies and anime and comic books.

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) Yeah, if they’re young I really won’t do any face tattoos or big tattoos on their arms. They’re too young and really don’t know what they’re gonna do in life. Sometimes it can interfere with something you wanna do down the road.

What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? Well I seen it grow to a big industry now and it has its ups and downs a lot of good artist now just not in the country but all around the world and thanks to media now everybody can see it. As for the future moving forward we’ll see about that (lol)?

Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? I’m too old to deal with drama like that anymore so I usually just tell them you know what? I’m not the artist you’re looking for ? better that you look for someone else to do your work then I just walk away (lol)

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Let’s see there’s a lot (lol)? If you’re young and in a relationship break up that relationship to focus on tattooing, because most of the time they just get in your way of the journey. Remember you’re going to be a pirate! pirates don’t have girlfriends (lol) and never stop learning the craft of tattooing you can always learn other skills from other artist. ✕

What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? Start off small. So you can get a general idea on how tattoos feel. I messed up and got a big back piece for my first one. I haven’t finished it! (lol)

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My close friends and family were very supportive. Their opinions are the only ones that matter. A while back, when one of my uncles found out I started tattooing, he whined, “tell her not to get any tattoos!” [insert middle finger]

Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? What would you say is your favorite part of the job?

Who and what influences you to create your work?

Seeing *my* art come to life. Like, I drew this. Now it’s tattooed on skin. Fully shaded/colored…Client LOVES IT. Now the Whole World gets to see it.

The individuals who influence me are 1Rebecca Blair, 2Kelly McGrath, 3 Melvin Arizmendi, 4Mike Endazzo and Michela Bottin Ackerman. They are all so great! And WHAT influences me, Anime and pretty ladies.

What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? When tattoo shows like Miami Ink and such started airing. I got to know a bit more about it. And I saw a woman artist! I thought, “woah, I’ve never seen a woman in the tattoo world before.” Back then, it was rare.

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) Besides from obvious hateful tattoos. Barcodes! Mandalas! Butterflies! Pocket watches! and super super thin lines! Get that away from me! (lol)

Psssshhhhh! (lol) When you’ve worked on Hollywood Blvd, you experience one too many. From a dude puking in your station to some drunk chick from Fresno popping a squat in one of our tattoo stations. This isn’t even the tip of the iceberg.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Don’t settle in a shop you’re not happy in because you’re financially comfortable. Find a shop that makes you happy and that also puts money in your wallet. ✕

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Do your research. With social media, it's easier than ever to see tattooers work. I also recommend being patient and waiting for your preferred artist, since getting tattooed has become very popular, artists can be very busy ⸺ What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My family and friends have been very supportive. Nervous, but excited. I quit my corporate desk job and haven’t looked back even once. Now, wherever he goes, my Grampy brags that his granddaughter is a tattoo artist ⸺ What would you say is your favorite part of the job? I love it when I bring someone’s vision to life. A lifelong piece of art that stemmed from an idea in their head. I can’t imagine doing something else ⸺ What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? I always watch[ed] the tattooing shows growing up. In high school, for fun, I would draw on my friends with sharpies. So, not pursuing art as a career was out of the question. If I’m not creating, I’m not happy ⸺ Who and what influences you to create your work? When I don’t know what to draw, I usually grab my closest book, sketch something that catches my eye, adding and removing elements as the design comes to life. I love studying vintage photographs and renaissance art and incorporating elements of those ⸺ Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) If someone didn’t have a lot of visible tattoos already, I would probably decline tattooing their face or other highly visible areas like their neck or hands. I also wouldn’t tattoo anything hateful ⸺ What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Draw every single day. Explore multiple styles. Research artists and shops before you get an apprenticeship. Find an artist/mentor whose work inspires you. This career path is not an easy one. Take time for yourself. Learn to say no. Accept that you can not do it all and that’s okay ⸺ How would you describe your style? It’s hard to define or label due to my being so new to the industry. I am considered a mainly black & gray illustrative artist. Though, [I am] constantly developing. I’m excited to see which direction I go. ✕ THE TATTOO INDUSTRY

just things I like. I really just love art all together. I used to draw and paint a lot when I was younger, so I’m always inspired.

What is your favorite tattoo that you have? My neck piece. It’s an hourglass with two hearts connected with wings. It’s for my parents. I also got a portrait of my dad recently which I love. It has our birthday 4/28. We were born on the same day. Whats the longest tattoo session you have sat through? Probably eight to nine hours on my back. I would try and sit that long for each session so I can get it over with but it was definitely hard. Lots of smoke breaks and tequila. What is the most painful tattoo that you have? My most painful tattoo is the back of my head. I shaved it to get a big mandala tattoo and then grew my hair back. Definitely painful on the skull tho! When was the first time you smoked? How did that happen? I was 13 the first time I smoked weed. It was out of a gravity bong that my friends had made and I was high for three days straight! If you could smoke with anyone dead or alive who would it be? Bob Marley and 2Pac. Who’s your favorite person to smoke with now? My producer Nate 3D. We smoke, make amazing music and laugh our asses off. 34

THE TATTOO INDUSTRY

Are you a sativa or Indica person? Definitely indica. I like some hybrid strains too. Do you take tolerance breaks or is that not part of your routine? Yes, I do tolerance breaks a lot more often now. Sometimes, I won’t smoke for a few days or I’ll do 30 days sober. No weed or liquor. Just to practice self discipline. How much can you smoke in a session by yourself? A half? An ounce? Depends. I’m out drinking or making music. I smoke a lot more. Probably 10-14 grams. I used to smoke 15 blunts a day so I’ve chilled out since then. When did you start doing music? Why? I started making music eight years ago. I used to always want to DJ, but I ended up in the studio and made a song. Never quit since. It’s definitely a form of therapy for me. I love the process. What music projects do you have coming? I’m about to drop a double mixtape this year along with some other singles. One mixtape is called ‘Manifest’ and the other one is called ‘the Dick Tapes’. What’s your favorite song you’ve done so far? ‘Life is Beautiful’ which just dropped recently. I have another song called ‘Fam Bam’, ‘Drugs with you’ and ‘Back to Life’ to name a couple. What’s your biggest fear? Not living to my fullest potential. Dying alone. ✕

model How did you start out / what made you want to get into the modeling industry? I was suggested to SuicideGirls randomly in 2014. That conversation was everything! Discovering SG took my life by the horns and showed me where I want to go!

How old were you when you got your first tattoo? What was it? I was 19! It is a humanoid representation of my first car, a 1994 Dodge Shadow ES. Her name was Cherrie and she had more personality than ten door-to-door salesmen put together!

Do people treat you differently because of your tattoos? Definitely! They stare, they glare, they share. I take it light-heartedly and as an opportunity to shift their perspective on tattoos especially on women!

Who is/are your favorite tattoo artist(s) to get tattooed by? Depot Town Tattoo. I found myself wandering around their shop and falling in love with their energy. Julian Bast1 at Name Brand Tattoo did my butterfly neck tattoo as well as the snake panther brawl on my leg. Julian and Jon Larson’s work is absolutely beautiful and vibrant - still as bright as day one. Exceptionally great artists and people.

Who is your favorite photographer to work with? Why? Richard Marz3 in Los Angeles was a thrill to shoot with. What a wonderful experience all around, I felt like a superstar! He is sensational at what he does and a true inspiration.

Do you have a favorite shoot location or place you would like to shoot at? Shooting in L.A. is always a thrill. Although I have been to California 17 times, I have never seen the ocean! It has always been my dream to have a shoot on the beach. I would love a Sports Illustrated inspired photo shoot on a beach somewhere or up in a penthouse! In the desert! Or on top of a plane. I can go on!

If you could shoot with any photographer in the world who would it be? Why? It would be a dream to model for Playboy or bigger brands to promote tattoos in a timeless, classic way. My goal is to shift the whole world's viewpoint of the social norm of having tattoos!

Do you have any upcoming events coming up? Business ventures, brand collaboration, etc... Staying on top of the regular Maud grind. More Youtube videos, Twitch streams, Posts, and some amazing collaborations. Recently, I wrapped a cosplay calendar that I produced, designed costumes for, and photographed. Very proud! Note to future self: I knew you could do it!

Three Rules to Live by When it Comes to New Tattoo Ideas

1

THE SIX MONTHS RULE. If I am thinking about a particular idea or a placement consistently for 6 months then I book my consultation with an artist that specializes in whatever that idea might be!

2

SOMETHING WEIRD & COOL. When both the artist and I are unsure I suggest making it weird and cool. That gives them creative free will!

3

SHOP WALLS & FLASH BOOKS! The walls hold treasures of their own. I love going through vintage tattoo flash or books for inspiration along with the tattoo artists flash booklets! There is always something that will make everyone giddy!

@MaudFrainklen

What is your favorite tattoo that you have? I would say all of them if I could! I love how this body suit collection is coming! If I absolutely had to choose it would most likely be my back piece by Jon Larson2. The angel scene with the cherubs makes me feel like a walking painting. Plus, she’s my girl and they got my back! Without one the other wouldn’t feel the same. I can’t wait for more to come!

What's the longest tattoo session you have sat through? Four to five hours! You’d think I would’ve gone longer. I generally wrap up larger pieces in three sessions. Smaller ones in a day! I get mentally and physically prepared if it's going to be a larger piece. All this tattoo talk is making me want to plan my next tattoo!

What is the most painful tattoo that you have? My feet are inspired by Stella Grassman! Stella was tattooed by husband Deafy and traveled around as a tattooed “freak” circus performer in the 1920’s. Stellas webbed feet stemmed the inspiration to have it done myself in tribute to Deafy’s unique approach. Jon Larson drew on the webs by hand and completed both feet in one sitting. The only way through that session without passing out was meditation and the healing process was just as bad–it was all so painful. I cannot fathom what Stella felt with those old tattoo machines! Stronger because of it! ✕

How long have you been tattooing? I was about 12 and my father was a prison guard. I was always an artist. One day at Red Lobster (I was acting a fool) he poked me with a burnt shish kabob skewer leaving my first tattoo, Being that he was a guard I had been on tours and seen multiple examples of prison rigs and was only a day before I destroyed an old r/c car and built my first machine and tattooed myself and then getting caught about to tattoo my younger brother What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? My father on the other hand, hated it and I was beat for drawing to the point I would draw on every scrap of paper they gave me at school and hide it. ALINE PETUNIA What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? I would say, think about it, because you can’t or won’t stop getting more after your first. Don’t forget what kind of job do you want to have or what industry you want to work in. It’s a serious decision ⸺ What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My parents weren’t too happy, with the fact we wanted to be tattoo artists without having a backup job. They are very conservative and don’t have any tattoos. They hoped that we would study art in a different way after we finished high school. They didn’t think we would get into the tattoo industry. But our mum never stops supporting us. She is still our biggest fan and supporter, which I appreciate so much. A lot of our friends were really supportive but there were also some who were very skeptical and didn’t take it seriously, maybe also a little jealous. I had one friend who was obsessed and so negative when we started to tattoo, maybe she thought we could make ourselves more pretty and get more attention. I don’t know.... ⸺ What would you say is your favorite part of the job? It is such an amazing feeling meeting people from all over the world that come specifically to you and want to have your art on their bodies. I appreciate every single client and I am so thankful. It’s so crazy to think that you can spread your art on skin and have living canvases. It’s something magical to see your client happy and see how they express themselves abstractly and get more confidence ⸺ What 40

was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? Somehow it already started in our childhood. We used to draw cats and dinosaurs when we were little children. While growing up, we found a way to channel our emotions into art, so we made colorful acrylic paintings on canvas, which sometimes were really wild and sometimes calmingly beautiful. Making art never felt like work to us, it’s more like having a vision and following your intuitions. Then, after we got our first tattoo by the age of 17 we fell in love with them. This was the beginning of this beautiful journey. When we were still in high school we started tattooing ourselves and the word began to spread. It was crazy, everybody would come and want a tattoo. By this time, we knew that this was the right path for us. Right after our diploma, we found a studio where we could tattoo and follow our passion ⸺ Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I would never touch a dick or other genitals. At that point I feel like it has nothing to do with spreading art anymore. Back in my apprenticeship, I tattooed a girl close to her vagina because my old boss forced me to do that. It was not fun at all and especially what she wanted to get. uncomfortable What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? The tattoo business is such a hard competition, no one wants to teach or share their art techniques to someone new. We can give everyone the advice to be brave and humble. your apprenticeship might have you grabing coffee and cleaning the whole studio without any money for a long time before you start actually tattooing, but don’t give up. every beginning is hard but it’s definitely worth it in the end. Never lose your focus on your goal and especially not on your passion for art. Eventually you will bloom in the tattoo business. When you reach this point, you should always remember to remain humble. Don’t think you are better than any other tattoo artist, you are a part of a community of creators who spread beautiful art What would you tell me about your business/Style? I love vibrant colors and it’s very important to me that tattoos keep their shine over time. This might be the reason why I found myself doing a lot of Neo-Traditional tattoos, for which I won some prizes. I guess my affinity for strong colors comes from acrylic paintings, which I still do a lot. Also, you can always find imagery of flora and fauna in my works. I like to combine flowers with abstract elements. However, I try to not force myself into a certain thing, which allows me to grow. As an artist, you should be able to work without restraint and let yourself breathe from time to time What is something to know about you

/ your business? We live the American dream! On the 18th of December 2019, we opened up our modern and unique tattoo studio called “Petunia Twins Ink” in the heart of Hollywood. It’s focused on professional high end tattoos and custom designs for incomparable customer experience. Our inspiration is our nature, so we live a vegan lifestyle and offer vegan tattoos as a special service. Since the vegan lifestyle is on the rise, many people want their tattoos to be cruelty free. We chose the petunia flower as our brand because the flower reflects us. Everybody’s searching for the best way to live and grow just like a petunia flower, which grows in positive energy and therefore develops strength. Our tattoo shop represents this positive place, so it’s completely pink! ⸺ Have you both ever tattooed someone at the same time? We have more then a few times! We had a double tattoo session with Grant Kemp, a rapper from California, and he got both of his hands tattooed from us at the same time. That was crazy! On one hand, he got a realistic black and grey wolf with bloody teeth and on the other hand a geometric fox with color. In another session, we both tattooed a woman’s face with abstract features of LA. We also tattooed one of our regular client’s, “Ken” at the same time. We each prepared two sketches and he had to choose one of them that we would both collaborate on. That was a very new experience to work on one tattoo simultaneously. We were nervous and we had an argument before the session but in the end, it came out wonderful! ✕ THE TATTOO INDUSTRY

PETUNIA What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? (A tattoo virgin) The tattoo art is something fantastic! You can conjure up anything on the skin and it will stay forever. Therefore, you should think about what you want. All of us go through different times in life. What you like today you may not like tomorrow. Choose a image and no lettering because images are mostly timeless. Lettering, on the other hand, refers to specific things ⸺ What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? I come from a small village in Germany. My family is very traditional and has no or very few tattoos. But my parents have always been very supportive of my art. Nevertheless, my parents were shocked when they learned that I want to be a tattoo artist. I can understand it, because our parents grew up in a completely different generation. In their time only sailors and criminals had tattoos. Of course, my parents hoped that after graduation I study and have a good profession. Today they are proud of what I have already achieved. I moved with my twin sister to another country and started my own tattoo studio. Everyone from our village back home thought we were crazy and never believed that we would make such a big step. But we proved them wrong ⸺ 42

What would you say is your favorite part of the job? I love my job! But what gives me the greatest pleasure and fun when my customers give me artistic freedom and can perpetuate my style on their skin. It is simply passion for me. Some of my favorite moments are when I get to see the happy faces and expressions of my clients after a tattoo session. I think the tattoo art will continue growing. Who does not like to wear art on the skin! Many people also lose the thought of the origin of tattoos, that only criminals or sailors have tattoos. Tattoos are becoming more and more accepted. I think soon doctors or policemen will be able to tattoo their neck or face. In the future, other styles will be created that will appeal to other people who have tattoos. And those who have tattoos, know that one can stop only with difficulty from it! Tattoos are a continuous search. You always want more. So the tattoo business will always remain Have you ever

had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? I must say I had few bad moments in my tattoo career. Unfortunately! When I started tattooing, I once had a customer who was very dissatisfied with his tattoo. He got black and white skulls in his inner arm, which were really not that nice. He did not want to pay and never came back again. This motivated me to get better. When you start tattooing this often happens. It takes time and practice to learn how to handle the machine on real skin ⸺ What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? The tattoo business is a tough. You have to be strong, because it is hard to find someone who will help you and give you information. Most tattoo artists want a large sum of money to teach you. Or with other tattoo artists you just have to clean everything and listen to some remarks. Usually when you first start tattooing the first lines are not immediately straight or in the skin. It takes time and practice. In addition, the first customers are not immediately satisfied but already expect a good tattoo. The pressure is high! All this I have gone through and its made me strong! Be strong and no matter how hard it is, fight for your goal. It will be worth it! ✕ THE TATTOO INDUSTRY

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? The advise I give to all my first timers that come to me to get their first tattoo is to go big and think about your sleeve rather than a individual tattoo. Also to make sure to do their research on the artist they wanna get tattooed by so there is more confidence in trusting the artist with the design. What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? Well I started off when I was 16 when I got my apprenticeship. So a ton of my friends and family didn’t approve at all about my choice. They thought it was a waste time. Man we’re they wrong.

What would you say is your favorite part of the job? I would say my absolute favorite thing about the job would be getting to meet new people and going through the creative process of the tattoo. What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? I would say it was my dad. I remember when I was about 10 years old I saw my dad get his first tattoo and it blew my mind. So I would say that stuck with me. Who and what influences you to create your work? Some examples of people who influence my work would be 1Tim Hendricks, 2 Corey Miller, 3Freddy Corbin, and Grimes. Things that influenced my work would be anime and shows I just watch in general.

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I take anything on for the most part. As long it’s not anything offensive.

What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? As a tattoo industry I just see it growing. The crazy amount of art coming out right now is incredible.

Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? Oh hell yea I have. From clients being disrespectful to clients doing some weird things while getting tattooed.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Be humble and never get big headed. ✕ 44

Born and raised in Hawaii. Mother of two. Co-owner of Beach Park Tattoo in Kailua. Owner and designer of handbag line called Oceans End Hawaii. I’ve always been into tattoos. Got my first one at 12. But it wasn’t until I went to college in California where I actually started to get into the craft of tattooing What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Do your homework. With so much at your fingertips you can now seek out amazing artists who put out amazing work and are worth every cent. I wish when I first started getting tattooed I saved my money and spent it on art from artists I admire What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? (lol), I think everyone thought it was going to be just a hobby or phase. Little did they know that I’d create a whole life out of it, being able to provide and support my family with something I love to do and am passionate about What would you say is your favorite part of the job? Meeting amazing people who give me the freedom to create pieces for them that they will have forever Who and what influences you to create your work? I love neo traditional artwork, art nouveau, ornamental designs and vintage pieces. I have some artists that I admire and hope to meet and get tattooed by one day Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I haven’t really been put in a spot to refuse a certain type of placement but I do come across inquiries where if it’s not my style I’ll point them in that direction What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Respect and hard work. Anyone can be an amazing artist and a great tattooer, but if you have a shitty attitude and no respect then I could care less about what you can do. Tattooing is a craft, a never ending learning experience where you can always grow and get better. ✕

What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Do your research, and pick an artist that you not only like their tattoo style but you like them as well as a fun person to spend hours or sometimes up to several days hanging out with. Your tattoo experience is just as important as the shop itself, and you want to choose an artist that truly cares about you and your art.

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My Mom and Dad are my best friends, and they were there every step of the way. They always knew this would be my path.

What would you say is your favorite part of the job? I love designing every single tattoo from scratch, and making a totally one of a kind work.

Who and what influences you to create your work? Honestly I’m very observant of the world, and everything that happens daily in the news, traveling to experience new places, and meeting new people all are influencing my work.

Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) In the last eight years I’ve been tattooing I’ve only refused two clients. One client was a young man who had zero tattoos and wanted a large face tattoo for his first piece, and the the other client wanted her boyfriend’s name but had only dated him for a few days. I told her she would be better off getting my name tattooed on her, than a stranger that she did not know yet!

tattoos at each other? In all seriousness, I think that tattooing will always be what it is now and will just keep becoming more accepted.

What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Draw every single day, and work at it until you pass out from exhaustion at night. If you’re not tired, and frustrated with your work then you aren’t putting 100% of your soul into trying.

What is it like in the tattoo studio? We have an open floor plan so everyone is just a

few feet away from each other. We can all laugh and joke with each other and all of the clients can see what each artist is up to at all times. My employees are my best friends. We vacation together, we get dinners together, and we are a big family.

What is Cattoo Day? Every year we have the Orlando Orange County

Animal Shelter bring out dozens of kittens and unwanted older cats and they get adopted at our tattoo shop! The artists each tattoo 10 small cat tattoos on clients and donate 100% of the proceeds to the shelter. We have raffles, food, drinks, and prizes. It’s the best day of the year for us! ✕

What advice would you give to someone about getting his or her first tattoo? My advice for those getting their first tattoo, is to do your research. Find an artist that matches your style What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My family wasn’t exactly the most supportive at first. It wasn’t out of ill intent though. They only wanted me to have a secure situation What would you say is your favorite part of the job? The endless journey of progression. There’s always something new and interesting to learn. It feels like a movie that just keeps getting better Who and what influences you to create your work? My clients influence me to create everything. I always said if I didn’t want other peoples input, I would have been a painter. Using that influence, the imagery I use usually stem from ancient art from my clients background. For example if they come from African decedents, I use elements from that history in the piece Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? (face, private areas, etc) I definitely won’t tattoo genitalia or eye balls. Not only am I scared to, I also wouldn’t have enough space to do anything substantial What do you think is in store for the future of tattooing? Today is the renaissance of tattooing. It’s becoming one of the most lucrative art forms in the world. No matter what style you’re doing there’s someone in the world that would love that style on their body Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? The time I had to do a cover-up of my own tattoo right after I did the tattoo. I spelled something wrong which everyone knows is the artist’s fault. I still regret that to this day What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? Get the fundamentals down. Although it is an artform there is are rules that make a good tattoo. Those are solid straight lines packing black and deliberate shading. Those solid black lines used to write the letters “MOM” is the same technique used to make eyelashes on a face. ✕

I am 28 years old, originally from a small village in Israel. All my life I have been drawn to and created art, in different forms. After military service, I went on my big trip to the Far East and there I found myself and realized that I could choose to pursue art as a profession and as a way of life. I left for Greece to learn from 1Besmir, at “Wild Pear” studio in Rhodes (formally “House of Pain”). I sat next to him more than 12 hours a day. After six months in Greece, I ran a studio in Chiang Mai for another six months, and from Thailand to Spain, then France and Italy. I came to the USA where Seattle was a turning point for me, I learned so much from Tigerwolf and 2 Christen, the amazing owner of the studio. When covid hit I went back to Israel. Now, almost a year in Los Angeles and I really love it. Trust the tattoo artist you choose What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? In my area it was somewhat rare – I was the first tattoo artist in town. What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Really think about what they want. Most importantly, invest in an artist that they trust.

What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? My family and friends had some hesitation. I served in the Marines, completed my masters degree and worked with the county and had benefits and a salary job.

What would you say is your favorite part of the job? It doesn’t feel like a job to me. I get to spend more time with my family, help my clients go through some very tough times in their lives. Seeing the look of hope on them, and or even the simplest smile for that brief moment makes my day. Art does so much.

What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? My older brother 1John Esparza kept pushing me to tattoo. His stubbornness helped me to not give up. I always had the passion, and as tattooing got more popular it became more interesting to me.

Who and what influences you to create your work?

ESPARZA and siblings are my number one fans and toughest critics. I get motivated by them and I love seeing how I also influence them in becoming artists themselves. All of my kids love to draw and I see their amazing artwork everyday. It makes me feel like I have done something right.

LETICIA BOMTEMPO What was it that initially sparked your interest in tattooing? I have tattooed all my dolls since I can remember. Later I would draw temporary tattoos on my classmates in elementary school. Tattooing has always been a fascination to me. As a kid, I was drawn to tattoo shops because I could see the true art behind it, and I longed to have a lifestyle where I could feel free to be my authentic self What advice would you give to someone about getting their first tattoo? Research a design with a good and experienced artist. Don’t go straight to social media for inspiration What did your family and friends think about you getting into the tattoo business? It was definitely not my family’s first career choice. My family worried about me being able to make a living. Nowadays, I believe they feel better about this matter since time has proven it was a more lucrative choice than most traditional jobs What would you say is your favorite part of the job? Every day I have the privilege of being part of the beauty and commitment it takes to make a piece of art, in someone’s skin. I like to hear my clients’ stories about their tattoo inspiration and then spend the day listening to music while getting to know people on a very personal level. There is no other profession quite like it. Being an artist has given me the tools to thrive in different situations in my life, freedom to travel, be myself as an individual, and have a very fulfilling life with diverse experiences. It has made possible for me to live and work anywhere. It has also given me some aches and pains! Who and what influences you to create your work? People who have been dedicating their lives to art and artists from different places and generations. Artists like 1London Reese, 2Fabricio Galdino, my former boss- 3Dee Peacock, my first mentor- 4Kemerson Zanuth, the many friends I have met. Art is always catching my eye, and I’m constantly finding new great work out there. My work is inspired by nature, moments in time, and the human figure. I like morbid or dark themes, abstract surrealism, pop art, and fine art Are there any tattoos you would refuse to do? Yes. I use my best judgment to ensure I’m doing high-quality work that someone will look at and feel proud to have. I also want it to heal and look well. That being said, I’m not going to be enthusiastic about tattooing a butthole Have you ever had a bad tattooing experience and what was it? I cannot complain about my tattoo stories. I had a few unusual episodes, but I am not the kind to let people get too weird when I’m working on them What is the most important advice you can give someone new to the art of tattooing? The old schoolers have a saying, “Shut up and draw.” Get a job in the best tattoo shop you can, listen and learn from people about what it means to be a tattooer. Respect other artists.
