Letter from the Editor InkSpired Magazine celebrates our beloved tattooed nation with the September 2013 “Anniversary” Issue, dedicated to September 11th. With InkSpired stories, music, tattoo and a kick ass all-American fashion feature shot by Sean Hartgrove, this issue covers the ink community in all of its glory, “from sea to shining sea” and stopping at Th’ink Tank Tattoo in Denver, Colorado to show the Mile High City where InkSpired Magazine originated to give its home base some love. The lovely Bernadette Macias, shot by HUGO V PHOTOGRAPHY graces our cover. An “American Girl” photo spread, including our cover model by Hugo Velazquez ties the overall theme of this issue together, representing our tribute for our great country. “InkSpiring” the nation, one tattoo story at a time. InkSpired Corner WHAT ARE THE FANS SAYING!
“Being ‘Inkspired’ is the way I express myself and using my body as the canvas. I have tattoos that express my love for my daughter, my grandmother, the fact that I wear my heart on my sleeve, my sense of humor and many other things. I will continue to add more tattoos for as long as I can.” - Stefanie Weidman
“Self expression using my very own canvas.” - James Carinci
“My visions are beautiful when done through ink...” - Michael Brewster
“Being ‘InkSpired’ to me is everything. I’ve been a painter and an artist since I was very young. I am a professional hair and makeup artist. Every tattoo I wear resembles a piece of me and my life. My hair is always very colorful as are my tattoos. People often tell me my tattoos are like accessories; without them, something is missing. I’m love inspiring others with my ink.” - Darling Dolly

InkSpired Story CHARLIE KELLER
C
Photography: Tyler Seielstad
harlie Keller is an American hero firefighter EMT with a 1st Degree Black Belt Chinese Kempo twist. Not only is he a “jack of all trades”, he’s a master of all. Since he was a kid, Charlie dreamed of being a firefighter. He graduated valedictorian of his fire academy and has been a cherished part of his department for 5 years. With an elite background in fitness training, he is also a fitness trainer for his fire department. His fitness training served him well in another aspect of his life: professional bodybuilding. Although he excelled at the sport, Charlie decided to take some time off to spend with his little girl. Charlie’s background in competitive marital arts inspired one of his largest and most colorful tattoos, an asian themed half upper-body suit consisting of samurais, geishas and an Oni mask on his chest. “I have to say, the chest is the worst place to get tattooed...I was absolutely MISERABLE,” Charlie declares. Being a total “momma’s boy”, he also has a special tattoo dedicated to his mom. Though his tattoo work is exceptional, Charlie didn’t always have pleasant experiences getting tattooed. It was only after he met his artist, Aaron Moore, owner of West Side Tattoo in Colorado Springs, that his body art collection began to flourish. He has recently found another career path that suits him well: modeling. Due to his charisma, good looks and build, several romance novelists have approached Charlie to represent their main male role on their covers. He has also appeared in several fitness advertisements and magazines. When he is not firefighting and saving Colorado from its seemingly rampant wildfires or hanging out with his daughter, Charlie is traveling with his girlfriend and making appearances at his book signings. America’s Firefighting Romance Hunk has it all...with a few successful careers, a killer physique, charm and kick ass ink, Charlie Keller can put anyone’s fire out.

Positive Spin ALEX
MINSKY
A
merica’s hottest new underwear model is a former Marine and an amputee. Just three weeks into active duty as a Marine, his truck triggered an IED while he and his crew were on patrol in the middle of the night in Afghanistan. The tragic yet fateful incident landed him in the hospital in a coma for 47 days, missing the bottom half of his right leg, a broken jaw in four places and brain injury. “When I woke up, the first thing on my mind was how I could get back on the field to help my fellow men,” Alex recalls. After being hospitalized for 18 months, Alex had to relearn everything, including speech. Only two months after suffering such life-changing trauma and being honorably discharged, Alex’s younger brother, Daniel passed away. “There’s a period in my life I just don’t remember,” Alex admits. In an attempt to escape from reality, the veteran fell into a whirlwind of drinking and depression. His alcoholism was so severe that he knew he had to stop right then and there. He realized that if he didn’t, he was putting his own life on the line...again. “I was forced to change, to not drink alcohol. It wasn’t my idea,” Alex laughs but it turned out to be a blessing, his calling. “After a certain amount of time of being sober, it dawned on me that this was way better. I realized the potential to do something more with my life,” he continues. As the former Marine started taking steps towards sobriety, he also focused on getting healthier. In addition to changing his eating and alcohol consumption habits, he began going to the gym on a regular basis. It was there that he caught the attention of a professional photographer. As photos surfaced of the ripped marine vet, Alex captured the hearts of thousands with not only his ravishing good looks and chiseled physique, but also his inspirational story of never losing hope.
In addition to being a recipient of the Purple Heart, Alex has a heart of gold as he regularly donates much of the proceeds from his endorsements and his time to the Semper Fi Fund and The Wounded Warrior Project. For Alex, being a role model is just as important as modeling. He aims to inspire those who have experienced hardships to never give up. “I like being an example and an inspiration. I want people to look at me and not give up,” he says. His tattoos adorn a seemingly perfect body, and a vibrant soul to match. They are all meaningful, with a large part of his chest piece dedicated to his fallen brother. When he puts his fists side by side, the word, “optimist” flows across his knuckles. It symbolizes the essence of his being well as a person who has triumphed over every tribulation that has been thrown into his life obstacle course. Sophocles said, “there is no hardship without success”. For Alex Minsky, his hardships helped to carve the path to his success. To him, progress is more important than perfection. “If you’re getting better everyday, that’s all that matters,” Alex declares.

y name is J. Michael Kent, I’m a versatile model currently based in New York. Something most people don’t know about me is that I’m a highly creative person, for a time I was into drawing. Even though I don’t have the desire to draw anymore, the need to create has always been there, and right now, I express myself through my modeling. Currently, I’m focusing on the alternative modeling scene, since it seems I can be my most creative in this industry. I’ve been known to put my own spin on some of my favorite characters, most notably Superman, Jason Voorhees (Friday the 13th), & Patrick Bateman (American Psycho). Before I decided to focus on alternative modeling, I dabbled in the fashion industry, and although I was overlooked for some jobs because of my body modifications, most individuals embraced them and booked me right away.

My first tattoo was when I was 16, it was 2 Chinese symbols for love & hate, my latest is the portrait of Samara (The Ring) done by Dmitry Vision of Wyld Chyld Tattoos in Pittsburgh, PA. A good portion of my tattoos reflect my interests, some stemming from my childhood and others are more recent interests, however all are equally special to me. Besides tattoos, I’ve had several piercings and most recently a scarification of the Man of Steel logo. My body is rapidly becoming an open book for those who want to know more about me, all without actually getting to know me.

At the moment, I have have a few ideas for my next tattoos, but everyone will have to wait to find out what they are.

InkSpired Magazine: What are some of your favorite memories of being on tour? Karen: Oh man, where do I start? Aside from rocking for the masses, all the cool shows, tours, parties, fans, friends all over the world, visiting tons of other countries and experiencing their cultures and food, one of the best times was drinking tequila with Willie Nelson at his clubhouse on the ranch where his studio is located, after finishing recording Nashville Pussy’s album, “From Hell to Texas”. What a sweet man! Another one of my favorites was spending some of my days off in Europe tagging along on the Motorhead bus for a few of their shows in Spain. We stayed in this beautiful hotel on the beach in Vigo. In Vegas, I had the pleasure off playing slot machines alongside Lemmy, on his dime. He’s a very generous bloke. Another fun time was seeing one of my favorite comedians, David Cross, laughing at lyrics to Nashville Pussy’s “I’m So High” in the crowd in NYC. Hanging out with him and making him laugh at fart jokes after the show was pretty satisfying as well. I figure you have to be pretty damn funny to make such a great comedian laugh! A couple years after that song was released, we were on the same bill in Belgium as Danko Jones, who sang a duet on that tune. He joined us on stage for that song and did the ‘Will Ferrell from Talladega Nights thing’, pretending not to know what to do with his hands while singing in the mic. That was a hoot and Danko Jones is one of my favorite bands, so that was certainly a highlight. A handful of years ago, Nashville Pussy was on tour with a band called Priestess, who is also one of my favorite bands. After a long, hungover drive from Vegas to Arizona, I learned my favorite song of theirs, “Talk To Her” and played that with them on stage. The tours with lots of free time are always a pleasure too. The first week of Nashville Pussy’s South American tour we spent lounging on the beach in Guaruja, Brazil and 5 days off in Tokyo was filled with arcade fun, crazy toy store shopping and attending my first baseball game. In Australia, I enjoyed feeding kangaroos (and feeding myself kangaroo), holding a koala and the zoos full of all the crazy Australian animals. In Germany with my old band Hemi Cuda, I visited the Neuschwanstien castle, which I’d look at pictures of as I daydreamed as a child. We also went to H.R. Giger’s bar in Chur, Switzerland, which was a trip! In Dublin, I had quite an adventure finding and visiting the gravesite of Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, which was followed by a Supersuckers set of all Thin Lizzy covers. I met Steve Harris of Iron Maiden when I played Wacken Open Air heavy metal festival in Germany. I could go on and on...I have nearly 9 years of tour stories with Nashville Pussy alone. During that time I had the pleasure of touring with so many great bands from Motorhead, to The Revered Horton Heat, to The Supersuckers, Voivod, and Hank III, to name a few. I’m so grateful for all those experiences, and all the fun and music with good friends! Strangely enough though, I find the irony odd, that as I watched Motorhead do a photo shoot for the Motorizer album 100 yards away, while on the beach with them in Spain, I was on the phone with my dad about the realization of my stepmom’s ill health, who shortly after passed away. Things like that always remind you, that while living up the rock n’ roll lifestyle, life continues to go on around us, in a very real way. What role do your tattoos play in your personal life & musical career? I never really thought about them playing a “role” per se. I’ve collected most of them as souvenirs in back stages around the world. One of my stage techs and I got matching rubber ducky viking tattoos in Norway. It happened to be Valentine’s Day so I also had the artist, Maya Jacobsen (Lucky 7 Tattoo - Oslo) tattoo a Norwegian flag in the shape of a heart. Another tour pal of mine and I got matching farting butterfly tattoos during the wee hours in a basement in New Orleans. My”lucky” tattoo I got in Dublin, while enjoying an after show party at a nearby tattoo shop, and one backstage at a festival in France that’s a strawberry with a banner that says “juteuse”, which means juicy in French. Shortly after my kitty and best friend of 17 years died while I was on tour in Australia, Sandi Calistro, from Kaze Gallery in Denver, did a cute tribute to her; my “Icky Girl”. Some mean nothing and are just silly with a fun night to remember, others are personal reminders for ways to live and love my life, never losing faith or that nature’s beauty is a magnificent reminder of things greater than the human mind. I guess I’ve turned my skin into my own personal scrapbook. What are some of your musical influences? First and foremost, my brother, who is not only probably my best friend, but has been making music around me since before I was born. Aside from the obvious of my favorite bands, bass players, and musicians; Phil Lynott, Steve Harris, Stevie Wonder, 38

Danko Jones, Quicksand, all my School Of Rock kiddos, and many more. I continue to find actual “influence” in new people all the time for their talents, perceptions and strengths, musical or otherwise. I would say at this stage in my life I am more influenced by experiences than specific musicians. I always look for inspiration and always find it somewhere new. I’m currently very inspired by the new band I’m working on with Chris Sorensen (formerly of Vaux and Melissa Auf De Mer). We’ve been coming up with lots of great stuff and I continue to surprise myself with it! If you didn’t play bass, what instrument would you choose? I can’t imagine not playing the bass. I just don’t think that’s even a possibility. There’s always room for more instruments: piano, drums, guitar, didgeridoo, kazoo...I dabble in a few. I’ve also always love the sound of cello. Where would you like to play that you haven’t played before? I’ve been really lucky to have played many places around this beautiful world. I haven’t played in Russia, Africa, China, parts of South America, Hawaii, Alaska, a couple Eastern European countries, or my niece’s birthday parties, so I guess all those places. What was your favorite city to play in? That’s hard to say because I love so many for different reasons. Playing France has always been a huge pleasure; great crowds and friendly, hospitable fans, not to mention it’s a beautiful country. I also really love the Pacific Northwest, namely Vancouver, but I guess as far as playing goes, I would list foreign countries with huge screaming crowds of fans and great food as my favorites. If you could choose any band in the world to play for, who would it be and why? My own idea of a supergroup: Danko Jones, Chris Sorensen, Dave Grohl and I because we’d kick ass! I guess I wouldn’t mind playing with the Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age or The Melvins either. After surgery, you have gained a new perspective on life. What’s important to you now that wasn’t necessarily important to you before? To prioritize ME and what’s important to ME and makes me happy. While I understand any ‘job, ‘career’, or ‘band’ comes with its inevitable share of BS, it’s important to make sacrifices where there are rewards, and appreciation (even as shallow as monetary rewards), because those acknowledgements are what continue to inspire and encourage the desire and willingness to do so. I also feel it’s important to really appreciate life and it’s little things, because sometimes when we’re down and out it’s all we have, and no one knows for how long. Through everything, while it can be the most difficult feat, TRY to stay positive! How would you describe this journey of being a rock n’ roll superstar? FUN! I’m so grateful to have had the opportunities to do so many amazing, interesting things and rock so many socks off! It’s been full of more ups than downs and certainly been a wild ride that I look forward to continuing! Charming, eclectic and wildly talented, Karen is an unforgettable rockin’ force. True to form as a rock n’ roll goddess, Karen volunteers and teaches bass at Girls Rock Denver, an organization in which women teach young girls rock n’ roll, empowerment and other forms of musical expression. She also works with School of Rock, directing shows and hosting summer boot camp. The spunky bassist has inspired many, one kick ass bass line at a time. www.karencuda.com www.facebook.com/karencudafanpage

Are you InkSpired?
Submit your tattoos and stories to: Submissions@InkSpiredMagazine.com.
Want to be InkSpired? All Submissions must be e-mailed to submissions@InkSpiredMagazine.com. If your file size is too large to e-mail, please send us a message stating as such and we will provide you with an alternative solution. Please, DO NOT send us links to online storage or websites to view your files. Also, any photos posted in our various social media sites, while appreciated and possibly shared by us on those sites, will NOT enter you into consideration for publication. Minimum of three (3) HI-RESOLUTION images need to be submitted. Low-res images will automatically be discounted from consideration. Photo credit, including Photographer, Model, Hair Stylist, and Makeup Artist, needs to be included with EACH IMAGE. You also need to state which of these YOU are, so we can provide you with the correct release form for publication.

Personal Tattoo Submissions:
InkSpired Online Store
If you are not a model or photographer or another professional in these fields, but you still have an amazing tattoo or two that you would like to submit for our new "Reader's Ink" section, we will be accepting lesser-quality images such as those taken from a cellular phone or personal camera (not professionally taken). The remaining guidelines apply, as well as a notation providing us with the name and location of your tattoo artist. Tattoo Artists: If you are an artist who would like to submit your portfolio or flash material for publication, please send us a message and a sample of your work, and we will get in touch with you about how to move forward as this is treated more as an advertisement than a submission.
