Trips for all your senses

Welcome to Inlandsba – a fantastic journey through magnificent scenery If you have traveled with Inlandsbanan before, you know what a fantastic journey awaits you. If it’s your first time, we will do our best to describe the feeling of traveling through the northern parts of Sweden, where glittering lakes, babbling brooks, proud fir trees and exotic animals all contribute to the overall experience. Inlandsbanan runs for 1,300 km from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north and is a cultural treasure dating back more than a hundred years. If you’re in a hurry you can do the trip in two days, but we recommend stopping over along the way so that you get to know and experience this sparsely populated region. Tranquility, silence, magical views, clean air and the midnight sun. Swedish Lapland and the arctic region offer adventure, hiking and biking trails, fantastic fishing waters and an abundant wildlife. Attend one of the many festivals that take place annually along the railway, enjoy the rich cultural life and learn about Sami history. Hop on one of the buses going up to the mountains to explore further up the mountain chain. Or just enjoy the scenery outside your train window and unwind to the rhythmic sound of the train wheels on the tracks, allowing you to recharge your batteries before returning to the daily routine. Sweden possesses incredible natural resources, and much of it is gathered in the northern parts of the country. There are ore deposits, forests, hydropower and a tourism industry that is in its infancy. Nature and the hospitality industry are closely linked, and the demand for untouched nature, wilderness and adventure are constantly increasing.

2

On the train Inlandsbanan’s own train hosts are on hand to guide you along the railway. If you’re lucky, the driver of your railcar might be a Riksspelman, a Swedish master folk musician. Inlandsbanan’s staff are there to help you and make sure you have an unforgettable trip. Stay in everything from four-star hotels to tents – discover your own little piece of inland Sweden. We like to show off our region! Choose your preferred way of traveling. If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, we recommend the three Wilderness Trains that you can read more about on page 18. It is a collaboration between Inlandsbanan and the Swedish Railway Museum. The brochure also contains information about our various package deals and our hop-on hop-off card: the Inlandsbanan Card. You can also customize your own package, we are happy to help! We hope to meet you on board this summer! Elena, Maria & Anders Sales consultants

Gällivare – Mount Dundret

Dundret mountain is located just three kilometres from the centre of Gällivare. The view from the mountain is fantastic and you can see 1/11 of the area of Sweden from the top, including the Sarek mountains and Kebnekaise mountain. The best place to see the Midnight Sun, between 4 June and 9 July every year.

Storuman – Stensele Church

Stensele Church, also known as ”Lapland’s Cathedral”, is one of Sweden’s largest wooden churches with room for 2,000 people. Here you will find one of the best preserved copies of Queen Kristina’s Bible and - if you look really carefully - the world’s maybe smallest bible, the size of a 1/4 stamp.

Östersund – Jamtli

A museum unlike any other! Jamtli comprises a museum building with exhibitions and an open air museum with historic farm buildings where actors bring history to life. Also, the first permanent branch of Nationalmuseum (Sweden’s great art museum in Stockholm) can be found at Jamtli.

10 Fågelsjö – Gammelgården Bortom Åa Part of the Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingeland UNESCO World Heritage. In 1910 the owners left their old farmhouse and moved into a new building with modern furniture, leaving everything they owned behind in the old house.

11 Mora – Zorn The Zorn museum in Mora is one of Sweden’s most popular art museums. The museum is dedicated to Anders Zorn (1860–1920) and boasts the world’s largest collection of works by the artist.

12 Kristinehamn – Picasso Statue The 15 metre statue is one of the largest Picasso artworks of its kind in the world. There is an exhibition building nearby and guided tours are available during the summer.

More and more people are looking for active holidays and are keen to try the nature experiences and physical activities that are available along the railway: hike in a land without roads in the Vindelfjällen mountains, catch a trout in the rich fishing waters in Sorsele, or go riding or kayaking. Cyclists are spoilt for choice, with many destinations along the railway offering great opportunities for off-road and road cycling.

Seat & bike reservation: To be sure of getting a seat on the train, we recommend reserving a seat for a fee of SEK 50 per section of the route. Bikes: SEK 100.

See our website for tips, inspiration and links to places and destinations along the railway and the activities they have to offer.

Hop on a mountain bus or bike and travel even further out in the wilderness Inlandsbanan has many stations along the railway but if you want to travel further afield, we suggest taking your bike along on your journey or catching a mountain bus to travel deeper into the mountains. You can reserve a space on the train for your bike if you want to explore inland Sweden on your own and you want to make sure you can bring your bike. We collaborate with Länstrafiken in many counties along the railway, which means that holders of the Inlandsbanan Card are able to use the card on several bus routes in inland Sweden. Visit our website for up-to-date information on which bus routes accept your card. 6

If you need to get to more remote places, that can be arranged by the local fishing guides. You don’t need any prior knowledge of either fishing or cooking. You live in cottages, tents or under the deep blue sky. Eat what the day gives you, cooked out on site by the fishing guides. Or shop your own food or eat in local restaurants. Use the Inlandsbanan Card to travel to and between the different fishing waters.

Local produce along the railway Good food is an important part of the experience on your journey. The train stops for meals and coffee breaks, allowing you to discover authentic Norrland artisan foods, meet the locals and stretch your legs. The food is prepared on site and the restaurants mainly base their dishes on local produce. This is an opportunity for you to try some of the specialities of inland Sweden: eg salmon, moose, reindeer, freshly smoked char, souvas, flatbread, cloudberries, etc. You choose what you would like from the menu on board the train, and the train host takes your order so that the food is ready for you when we arrive at the restaurant. You pay the restaurant directly. Don’t forget to state if you have a food allergy and also to bring along the meal voucher you received from the train host when placing your order. In the timetable you can see where, when and for how long we stop.

On board you can buy coffee/tea, drinks, water, cakes, biscuits, sandwiches and other snacks. Have a look at Inlandsbanan’s selection of souvenirs that can be purchased on board or from our webshop. A selection is available on page 16 of this brochure.

Sensational discoveries

Inland Sweden is a firework of exquisitely beautiful nature experiences, delicious food culture, historic sites and opportunities for exciting activities. Some sights and experiences are closely associated with Inlandsbanan.

Wild animals are a common sight along the railway track. We travel through landscapes that are home to our four predators: the bear, wolf, lynx and wolverine. These are shy animals but it is possible to catch a glimpse. You will probably see some reindeer, maybe even moose, and with a little bit of luck some rare birds of prey and owls.

You can see the midnight sun between 4 June and 9 July north of the Arctic Circle. The further north you are, the longer the midnight sun is visible. For most of the summer you can also enjoy the light summer nights, when it never gets dark. You cross the geographic Arctic Circle just south of Jokkmokk. The train makes a brief stop here.

The varied landscape is particularly evident when you travel in a north-south direction over the distance of 1,300 kilometres. Inlandsbanan passes through as many as 7 vegetation zones and the landscape shifts from deciduous forest in the south to coniferous woodland and bogs in the north. On board the train there is a magazine about the forest and the environment we travel through. Read it!

You will also come across unique Sami culture in the land of the midnight sun. Ancient traditions are being kept alive and can be seen in the art, food, reindeer husbandry and ordinary daily life of present-day Sami. The Northern Lights or auroras are light displays that you have the greatest chance of seeing during the winter near either the South or North Pole. In the northern hemisphere we call these displays the Northern Lights and they occur when rays of particles from the sun reach our atmosphere. It is a spectacle that is most visible in the darkness of winter, and the display looks like coloured curtains or rays in blue, green, red or purple. Northern Lights are active all year round. +46 771-53 53 53 | book@inlandsbanan.se | www.inlandsbanan.se

Inlandsbanan – past, present and future

Inlandsbanan’s vision is to be a driving force that develops the rural areas along the railway, and thus contributing to strengthening the whole of Sweden’s future. With the tracks’ strategic location through Sweden’s most commodity-rich regions and northern Europe’s last wilderness, we offer a complete infrastructure for both passenger and freight traffic. Strengthening local industries and military relief lines When Inlandsbanan was constructed, the basic idea was to build a main line in an area rich in natural resources but with poor or nonexistent communications. In wartime it was to be an important military relief line for the northern main line trafficking the coast. The railway lines that form Inlandsbanan were built step by step, by private interests and by the Swedish state, in the years 1873-1937. The last link in Inlandsbanan, Arvidsjaur – Jokkmokk, was opened for public traffic 7 August 1937, after Crown Prince Gustav Adolf inaugurated the whole distance in Kåbdalis the previous day. Both freight and passenger traffic on Inlandsbanan of today Inlandsbanan is an important part of Sweden’s infrastructure. We are therefore working with a long-term strategy for developing the railway and the municipalities through which the railway passes. We are proud of the railway’s historical significance while we take responsi-

18

bility for managing and developing it in line with today’s requirements and needs. Inlandsbanan accounts for 10 percent of Sweden’s total railway network. We manage the track on behalf of the state, and it is a well maintained infrastructure based on the conditions given. It is our employees you meet during your trip, both on board and along the track. We run tourist traffic every summer for ten weeks, as well as a winter week. During the winter there are daily passenger trains between Östersund and Mora. Charter trips have also increased in recent years. On the freight side, transport takes place all year round, mainly with forest raw materials and peat. Other operators also conduct business on Inlandsbanan. The future has never looked brighter The increasing demand for holiday train journeys together with the interest in outdoor activities, nature tourism and the environment is good news for Inlandsbanan. In addition, the

scenic north and the Arctic region are yet unexplored destinations for most holiday makers. In Norrland there is much taken for granted by locals, for example the midnight sun, northern lights, the arctic circle, amazing natural experiences, Sami culture and culinary delights. Not to mention clean water and air, a sparsely populated region, civil rights and security, all of which make Norrland a very attractive tourist destination. In the near future, we see that Inlandsbanan can be fully modernized and completely integrated with the other Swedish railway network suffering from capacity shortage. The motive for a refurbishment of the track is to create better conditions for freight traffic but it also means that an extension of tourist and regular traffic becomes possible, which in turn leads to rural development and even better opportunities for the tourist industry to develop. As a result, Inlandsbanan is involved in solving many of the challenges in rural areas in terms of jobs, public transport, trade and service.

ACCESSIBILITY

LUGGAGE

The railbuses have space for wheelchairs but there may be difficulties embarking and disembarking. The onboard toilets are not suitable for disabled. Please contact us when booking your holiday and we will try to find a good solution together. Guide dogs for visually impaired passengers travel free of charge.

You must take care of your own luggage during the journey. We recommend travelling light, ideally choosing a small, wheeled bag or a backpack. There is limited space for luggage on the trains.

ACCOMMODATION There is a vast choice of accommodation along Inlandsbanan, ranging from hostels to four-star hotels. See our website, inlandsbanan.se, for suggestions. For information and bookings, please contact the properties directly or choose a package trip that includes accommodation. We suggest that you book well in advance at certain times, for instance during the Midsummer weekend and during the month of July, when many people are on holiday. Advance booking is also recommended when larger events take place, such as the Storsjö Cup football competition in Östersund in the first week of July and the Storsjöyran music festival during the first weekend of August, also in Östersund. Mora attracts a lot of visitors, as does Gällivare, so it’s also a good idea to book accommodation in advance in these places. You are responsible for making your own way between your accommodation and Inlandsbanan. Some hotels offer package-trip passengers luggage transfer.

ACTIVITIES, SIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS Most destinations offer cultural activities, outdoor recreation, hiking, museums, sightseeing, restaurants, etc. You can plan and book these activities yourself or we can help you. The local tourist information offices can provide additional, up-to-date information. BIKES You can bring your bike along on Inlandsbanan. You should book a space for your bike in advance and the charge is SEK 100 per railway section. On the Kristinehamn–Mora stretch the bike can be brought along on the train if there is space. For this section of the railway the cost is SEK 60, payable in cash on the train.

CAR PARKING Please contact the local tourist information offices for information on car parking by the railway stations along Inlandsbanan.

FOOD AND DRINK We only sell coffee and a small assortment of snacks on the train, which is why the train stops for meals and coffee breaks along the way. The train host takes your orders from a menu available on the train. You can then enjoy your food in the restaurant or café or take it away to eat on the train.

HOLIDAYS AND SEASONAL OPENING HOURS Activities and attraction opening hours are largely planned around the period when most Swedes take their summer holidays, between the end of June and early August. Please contact the respective destinations for up-to-date information.

PETS Pets are welcome on board if they stay on the floor by seats 37–60. Let us know when making your seat reservation so you and your pet will get space on the train.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF TRAVEL/TRAVEL GUARANTEE We recommend you read the terms and conditions of travel that are included with your booking confirmation. These cover the agreement between traveler and the tour operator in respect of rights, obligations and liability. See inlandsbanan.se for complete terms and conditions of travel. We have lodged the required travel guarantee with Kammarkollegiet, the Legal, Financial and Administrative Services Agency in Sweden.

TIME TABLE The summer season’s timetable will be published on our website Inlandsbanan.se during spring 2019.

TOUR LEADER You act as your own tour leader on most package tours and make your own way to and from your accommodation and activities using the maps provided with the package tour documentation. The train hosts are on hand to assist you onboard the train.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION There is a daily service on the sections Mora–Östersund–Gällivare between 7 June and 18 August. Between 24 June and 18 August Inlandsbanan and Tågab collaborate on operating a train service between Kristinehamn and Mora. For more information, see the respective timetables on our website.

TRAIN GUIDES Our train hosts on board the train handle tickets, food and coffee orders. They provide information on the scenery, attractions and activities. They are happy to answer your questions and help make your trip a memorable experience.

TRAVEL CONNECTIONS Try to leave plenty of time when booking connecting travel to and from Inlandsbanan. Trains and buses tend to run on time but delays can occur. We are happy to provide suggestions and to book connecting trains for a small booking fee.

TRAVEL TO INLANDSBANAN All roads lead to Inlandsbanan. From Stockholm you can easily travel by train to Kristinehamn, Mora and Östersund, and there is a night train to Gällivare.
