Thank you for your interest in this collection of handmade Art Jewelry!

When InLiquid invited me to curate the jewelry section at the Benefit this year, I was ecstatic. I recently moved to Philadelphia from Chicago, where I managed an Art Jewelry Gallery. When I joined InLiquid, I found that I was surrounded by a network of coworkers and supporters of Art Jewelry in my new city. When looking for artists for this collection, I wanted to highlight local Philadelphia jewelers specifically (but of course, I couldn’t resist including a couple of my out-of-town favorites). Philadelphia, a longterm hub of Art Jewelry makers, lacks a substantial Art Jewelry market. Making opportunities for these included artists to be shown and collected during the Benefit was in line with InLiquid’s mission of supporting the local arts economy for a diverse group of makers and my own passion for Art Jewelry. It was kismet.

I hope you enjoy this curated collection and find something to take home and wear with pride.

This collection is on view at the Icebox Project Space at 1400 N American St from March 9th – March 23rd as a part of InLiquid’s 25th Benefit Auction. The space is open to the public on Wednesdays – Saturdays from 12 – 6 and during our special events planned during the benefit!

Visit www.inliquid.org/benefit for full details on the events and ticket prices.

Mary Forst

Mary Forst

Portland, ME

My name is Mary Forst, I am a metalsmith and a jeweler. I grew up in the small town of Chester, Connecticut along the Connecticut River and now reside in Portland, Maine.

I was drawn to the crafts at a very young age, often inspired by the act of making whether it be knitting, beading, drawing or painting. My family was extremely supportive of my interest in arts and craft and made a point to activate my creativity often. I spent a great deal of time with my grandmother who taught me to knit and sew and with my aunt who made and sold beaded jewelry at local craft fairs. I loved working with my hands and especially loved making things I could wear.

I was fortunate enough to attend a public high school with a well developed arts program and investigated as many mediums as possible. I appreciated all of the processes I attempted but jewelry making was by far the most intriguing. By the time I was sixteen I knew that I wanted to be a jeweler.

I went on to study metalsmithing and jewelry at Maine College of Art and graduated in the spring of 2016 with my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. During my time at Meca I was able to to learn traditional metalsmithing techniques as well as conceptual ways to apply them.

After graduating I began working full time in the field and began to develop my personal studio practice. In the fall of 2017 I began making work with the intent to sell. I now have a small production line and hope to continue developing my skill set. I take part in several local jewelry shows each year and sell my jewelry at a few shops in New England.

Shelby

Shelby Goldsmith

Saco, ME

Shelby Goldsmith is a metalsmith and jewelry artist, working from her home studio in Saco, ME. She earned her BFA in Metalsmithing & Jewelry from Maine College of Art [& Design] in 2014. She served for five years as secretary to The Metals Collective: A Portland based group of makers whose mission is to promote the craft of metalsmithing & jewelry through collaboration and public engagement. In 2017 she was awarded the Belvedere Fund, a MECA[&D] alumni professional development grant, which she used to purchase a torch and ventilation system for her home studio. Shelby participated in the 2020 Maine Craft Apprentice Program, during which she spent 100 hours working with and learning from her mentor j.e. paterak. In 2021 she undertook training to become a death doula & end-of-life planner, as well as a hospice volunteer. She currently practices both metalsmithing and deathwork, often combining the two.”

“Inspired and informed by sentimental jewelry throughout history, I offer my contemporary take. I utilize a dark, limited color palette of stones and oxidized metal to create modern mourning jewelry. Moving away from the morbid motifs common in memento mori (remember death) jewelry, my most recent body of work employs the letter X as a non-traditional symbol of death. Derived from the 1932 film Scarface, where a cinematic X motif is used as a harbinger of death, an X appears as each character meets their death. The shape provides a departure point from which to design from by endlessly multiplying and manipulating it. The finished work abstracts the dark context behind it, often utilizing asymmetry and movement to create elegant jewelry that is playful and dynamic.

Wes Heart

Wes Heart (Blob Blob Studios)

Philadelphia, PA

Wes Heart is an artist, designer, and educator living in Philadelphia. He holds two degrees in glass, a BFA from Southern Illinois University of Carbondale and MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University. He is the Founder of Blob Blob Studio and also teaches in the Art Glass Program at Salem Community College’s Glass Education Center in Southern New Jersey.

Wes’s current work utilizes a playful approach to form and function. He founded Blob Blob Studio to focus on creating designs that do both. By intuitively collaging media and process, he exaggerates each material’s beauty. Using bold color, the optical properties of glass, light, and texture, he creates impactful sculptural forms that demand further investigation.

His work has been featured in New Glass Review, published by the Corning Museum of Glass and he has received multiple awards, including a Windgate Fellowship, the Rickert-Ziebold Trust Award, an AACG Visionary Scholarship, and was a 2022 Center for Craft Career Advancement Fellow.

Casey Newberg

Casey Newberg

Philadelphia, PA

Casey Newberg is an artist and metalsmith in Philadelphia, PA. Newberg received her MFA from the Metals/Jewelry, CAD/CAM program at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2022, and her undergraduate degree from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2018. Her early career focused on the intimate relationships ,she began to deconstruct with not only herself but maternity and femininity as a whole. The work she created at this time were electroformed vessels that mirrored the similar and often provocative shapes that bodies create when they’re asked to grow in different ways.

Shortly after leaving KCAD, her family was diagnosed with a rare neurodegenerative disease that is both genetic and incurable. Upon receiving this news her electroformed work stopped for a period and she began to focus on the ephemerality and somewhat rotten nature of life. As she continued in graduate school Newberg began developing work that focused on impermanence and followed lines of medical dependence and consumption. Her work now focuses on feelings of adulthood displacement, and clouded trauma by placing familiar or recognizable objects in malignant contexts. Many of the pieces she’s created throughout the past two years incorporate foul language or rotten materials that by nature will self destruct
