Twofold

@ The South, North, and West Tower Galleries at Park Towne Place Museum District Residences February 19 - May 28, 2022 Curated by: InLiquid, InLiquid.org Featuring: Keith R. Breitfeller & Brian David Dennis Anne Canfield & Hiro Sakaguchi Jenna Hannum & Gregory Brellochs Smokie Kittner & Harry Anderson Deanna McLaughlin & Thomas M. Miles

Twofold highlights the work of five artist couples in long term relationships with one another, all of whom have their own established independent careers. While some have practices that couldn’t be further from their partners, others are in a constant dialogue, sharing styles, techniques, and materials. These couples affirm that their commitment to one another drives their practice and passion for art. Through this show we see how they influence, challenge, and inspire each other while still maintaining their unique artistic practice.

3

From the onset, our relationship has been committed to fostering our individual artistic pursuits. For 40 years we have remained committed to supporting each other. Sande Webster was the first to see the commonality between our work and showed us together. Since then we have been paired in many exhibitions across the country and in Austria. We are more aware of our differences than the few similarities. We are both process oriented. And our work presents a surface that is the result of many layers. We also each allow tantalizing elements to peek through. But our work and habits couldn’t be more different. Keith offers peaceful meditations as a way into a spiritual connection. Brian is at his best when he is emotive, confrontational and dynamic. Keith bathes the viewer in color. Whereas Brian relies on form, composition and a neutral pallet. Keith has a steady, disciplined studio practice. This is a stark contrast to Brian’s project, deadline driven productivity. Above all, our life together has built the fertile foundation we each need to thrive. Our love for each other is rooted in many things, but central is our deep respect for each other as artists. - Keith and Brian

Keith R. Breitfeller Keith R. Breitfeller was born and raised in Catasauqua, a small town in eastern Pennsylvania. He attended Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Kutztown, PA where he studied with New York Artist Marion Pinto, and at the Barnstone Studio. Breitfeller currently resides in Philadelphia, PA where his work has been shown at Sande Webster Gallery and Vox Populi. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, most notably at Finer Things Gallery, TN; Adrian Falcon Gallery, TX; Lyman Eyer, MA; and Galerie Göttlicher, Austria. His work is included in many private and corporate collections including in Athens, London, Dubai and throughout the Northeast United States. Breitfeller has become an avid tango dancer over the last 10 years. Breitfeller’s work has been influenced by the impressionist, modernist, and pointillist painting movements. He uses figure-to-ground relationships to deliberately confuse the subject matter, allowing the viewer to find themselves in the artwork. His aim is to provide a place of peace and contemplation to the viewer.

Brian David Dennis Parcels 01, 2022 80 x 24" Mixed medium $4,000

8

Brian David Dennis Brian David Dennis was raised in a home with movable walls designed by his father, an aspiring artist. Dennis’ mother, a kindergarten teacher, encouraged this constant building, and the fluidity of the modular arrangement captured his imagination. As a student Dennis considered following his passion for stage design, but sought the more personal expression of fine arts. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, PA and settled into mixed media. He later began to explore installation using the exhibition location as an essential part of the piece. A lifelong resident of Pennsylvania, Dennis lived and worked in Philadelphia since 1984 with his life partner Keith Breitfeller. He began exhibiting with the cooperative gallery, Vox Populi and remained an active member for 15 years. Dennis has had solo exhibits in Austria and in Philadelphia, PA at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Sande Webster Gallery, as well as a prestigious Fleisher Challenge. Notable commissions include Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, PA, the US Air Force, as well as private collectors. In the early 2000’s I was painting with traditional colors. One day, early in our relationship, I was out of a pigment and I snuck into his studio to see if he had any extra. I was intrigued by the bright colors I found there and decided to try them out. Of course I loved them and the rest is history. Hiro also encouraged me to explore my smaller drawing style when he saw some preliminary works of mine. His enthusiasm towards my work has had doubtless impact on the direction that I have gone with it. I can’t resist following something that Hiro has been excited by. All in all, we don’t always agree on what works visually, and certainly have unique ways of seeing and applying our independent ideas for works of art. In these times we’ve both had to learn to tune the other out and stick to our guts and our individual processes. This can be the tricky side of being married to another painter. Nonetheless, there are clearly many benefits as well, and having a forever comrade is certainly one of them. - Anne I can not pinpoint exactly how Anne’s work has influenced my own, but I respect her highly detailed drawing and beautiful use of oil paint. Anne paints small, intimate, highly detailed oil paintings and drawings. I make small drawings and mid-sized to large-scale acrylic paintings. We both paint and draw representationally. I depict a fictional, imagined world gathered from my everyday experience, social concern, interest and memory. Anne also makes fictional imagery using her everyday and traveling experiences, personal memory and interests. Our common thread seems to be about making an imagined world beyond what is presented or obvious. We both use paint/color and descriptiveness to capture something like an emotional effect. - Hiro

One may consider themselves particularly fortunate in life to find a partner with whom they can share their interests, their passions, and their joie de vivre. We enjoy such a symbiotic connection. From a shared love of the material qualities of graphite, to a fascination with the microscopic and biological wonders of the world, our inspirations and interests complement one another as we each delve deeply into a personal exploration of the natural world and how we, as humans, make sense of it. Sometimes our artistic practices converge as we are both swept along in an exploration of organic forms and textures, seeking to capture and convey a sense of burgeoning life that is fecund with aesthetic and conceptual potential. At other times our works deviate from one another, one exploring autobiographical content through the lens of medicine and fiber arts, while the other visually and conceptually investigates territory inspired by cognitive science and theoretical physics. In each instance we are motivated by a desire to look closely at the world around us, to embrace fascination and a sense of wonderment, to yield to the irresistible urge to scratch below the surface and find meaning through connection. - Jenna and Gregory

The artists that influenced Harry – from Duchamp on – include architects, designers and artists from De Stijl, Bauhaus, Dada, Cubism through the Abstract Expressionist and the Minimalists. The word “inspire” is more appropriate, as it applies to friends and colleagues he’s associated with. Smokie has always been in this realm. Common attributes / terms we use to describe our work are non-objective, minimal and conceptual. We comment by asking questions and suggesting additions. We help each other with the pragmatic elements of being artists: Harry builds stretchers for Smokie, she built his website. One of the things that drew Smokie to Harry in the first place was his art seemed to be fully integrated into his life. His life was art. Though we have very distinct concerns and means of expressing them, a shared mutual respect for each other and the works each produces has resulted in an ongoing dialog. Because of Smokie’s respect for Harry’s eye, he is and has been her go to person when she wants feedback on what she’s working on. While we have rarely collaborated on artworks, our shared love of graphics and design has been expressed in our collaboration on cards, posters, catalogs and events. - Smokie and Harry

Tom Miles and Deanna McLaughlin both share a love of designing shapes to create forms. Our approach to our work is in complete contrast to one another. Deanna loves to allow the process to help define the form: “I’m an idea girl. I like to form an idea in my mind and dig into it; inviting the challenges of working with various existing materials to explore how they can be put together in completely different ways.” Tom is more analytical using his process and materials background; thinking through the whole process prior to beginning. “I get a form in my mind – sometimes it is ephemeral; once I identify it and grab it, there is a series of changes and alterations through the process which once complete, leads to serendipity.” We inspire each other. It is our trust in one another that leads their discussions of how to solve design problems. Together, we exploit the creative process. - Deanna and Tom
