The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the
Dear Friends, I am grateful. As I reflect upon an incredibly challenging year, what stands out to me have been the compassionate actions within our Inly community. Compassion is at the heart of Inly’s mission. We are a community who truly cares about each other and the world around us. When our school year was interrupted in the spring, our community pivoted in the most inspiring way. Our students energetically participated in a new and creative learning environment, our dedicated faculty spent countless hours to ensure that students stayed connected and engaged in learning, and families supported each other and looked outward to see how we could be of service to our local community. It is my pleasure to thank and acknowledge all of you for your acts of kindness and generosity throughout the past school year. To each of you who enthusiastically donated your valuable time, your immense creativity and talents, and your heartfelt donations to provide critical support for Inly’s mission, we are so tremendously grateful for all of your contributions to our community. I am humbled and grateful for the partnership of our current parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents, and Friends of Inly—who create this truly great community.

Rainy weather did not dampen our Halloween celebration! Super heroes, unicorns, robots and dinosaurs were roaming the halls of Inly for the first ever indoor Halloween Parade! Students ended in the Artsbarn for the traditional performance of “Skeleton Bones” and a pop-up performance of “Thriller”.
Grandparents and special friends visited Inly in November for the annual Grandfriends Day. Guests of students contributed to the library book sale, took photos in the photo booth, and toured the School. Following musical performances in the artsbarn, Grandfriends visited their students’ classroom, where they were introduced to their work and materials.

Inly kicked off the winter holiday season with its much loved Gingerbread Cookie Decorating event with smiles and candy galore! A few weeks later, the Inly community gathered for the annual Winter Concert in a packed Artsbarn for special performances from the Inly Dance Company and the Inly Chorus, as well as festive musical selections by students.
The Inly community “Filled the Truck” with donations for several local organizations during “Spark Change” month, the school-wide community service initiative in February. Students also assembled care packages for veterans, sorted clothes for South Shore Foster closet, and collected change for the Pennies for Patients initiative of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Audiences were delighted by the performance of James and the Giant Peach by the Inly Players in March. This was the 14th annual Inly Players show, which features community members ranging from third to eighth grade students, parents, faculty members, alumni, alumni parents, and community theater professionals.

student activities The annual Student Leadership Summit brought the oldest students from each level (K, Grades 3, 6, 8) together to discuss what it means to be a good leader. Morning Shares are always a fun way to bring the Inly community together. This year, we had six in-person shares and over nine virtual shares!
In February, Lower Elementary students taught us the meaning of ‘teamwork’ as they took the audience out to the ballgame in their perfomance of The Artful Dodgers.
Inly students competed in soccer and basketball as part of two leagues — the Montessori Athletic Conference and New England Prep School Athletic Council. In addition, a variety of after school program sports were offered including volleyball, tennis, running club, and yoga.

aily classroom meetings and one-on-one teacher checkins are still part of each student’s day at Inly School, an independent Montessori-based school for grades PreK–8. A full schedule of curricular and co-curricular classes are still delivered by each teacher, along with after-school enrichment activities like yoga, cooking, ballet and Taekwondo. In the Upper Elementary and Middle School classes there are additional “help desk” hours, where students can pop in, hang out, and ask questions — just like they’d do on an ordinary school day. But while physical facilities are closed during the pandemic, these all happen virtually through Inly At-Home Learning, a technology platform designed to help students stay connected and stay on course, wherever they may be. To minimize disruption to learning, the new platform was developed by a team of Inly tech specialists and teachers over the School’s spring break in March. It was up and running, and populated with fresh content and assignments, the day students returned to session. From home, students have been able to bond with their teachers and classmates while engaging in as “real” and well-rounded a school experience as possible.
Custom curriculum, personalized learning and class meetings Although there are many e-learning resources available on the Internet, Inly uses its own custom Montessori-based content, adapting it for both online and hands-on work. Each morning, after virtual “circle times” and class meetings, teachers share new slide decks with creative assignments for the day. These are often accompanied by videos, so students can later re-watch their
teachers demonstrating, instructing, posing a question or sharing a message. Teachers are available for one-on-one check-ins with students during “virtual office hours.” Students and parents are encouraged to sign up to make sure they’re on track — with their academic work as well as their overall well-being. “Providing Inly curriculum content, delivered by our own teachers, is grounding for students in this time, when it feels like the ground underneath us is unsettled,” says Head of School Donna Milani Luther. “Community and Connection are at the core of our work, and we have designed a learning platform around those principles. We work hard to make sure students of all ages are fully engaged and know we’re all still here for them.”
This event has given us a chance to see in real-time how Montessori education has prepared [our children] for what lies ahead in their lives.
Weekly “Noon Share” Zoom meetings provide an opportunity for the Inly community to stay connected. Students, parents, and teachers share what they are grateful for during this event with over 100 people in attendance.
DENISE & CHRIS CHISHOLM
Keeping a check on mental health and social/ emotional wellness during the pandemic While Inly’s e-learning platform provides curricular essentials, it also serves as a conduit to expanded counseling services. The “On Our Minds” portal lists virtual office hours with its certified school counselors and welcomes anyone to sign up — students and parents alike. It also features a Wellness Library with articles on Parenting, Mental Health and Mindfulness. Many have appreciated the advice and reassurance from educators who tell parents they’re “not expected to be the teachers” and should go easy on themselves.
Extracurriculars and “Montessori+” activities provide expanded full-day enrichment
(top, left) Maeve Russo practices a “high five breathing exercise” for relaxation. (top, right) Grady Tysdal presents his reading log to Inly teachers during a Zoom meeting. (left) Thomas Mbungo demonstrates an exercise in a physical education class.
Realizing that families are under more pressure than ever while balancing work-from-home with home-schooling and activities, Inly has expanded its preschool enrichment and after-school “Passport to Adventure” programs with more virtual activities like yoga, ballet, cooking and Taikwando to keep kids busy. Students can enjoy creative sessions with the same familiar teachers from their living rooms or back yards. Zoom dance parties and games, hosted by co-curricular dance, music and sports teachers, round out the fun. All virtual extracurricular classes are free, except private drumming and piano lessons, which are available for a fee.
How Montessori philosophy and learning fits into a new virtual world In the Montessori environment, students learn about the balance of independence and responsibility from a young age. They are challenged to develop time management skills, to complete work without being reminded, and to track and meet goals. Through intrinsic self-motivation, they are empowered to achieve their personal best. Through the At-Home Learning site, their parents now have a valuable window into the Montessori process and what makes their children’s minds “tick.”

I am eternally grateful to be part of a school that promotes values and attitudes that we all live by and appreciate in all of us!” THOMAS MBUNGO “Inly has been a great place to bring executive leaders to remind them of the ultimate goal we are all playing for, how to create and facilitate learning environments that enable teams to solve meaningful problems at school, business, and in our local and global community. The Inly philosophy, methods, and most importantly their staff, create an inspirational play and learning space for all who have the honor of spending time there!”

a message of gratitude Dear Inly Community, It is my great pleasure, as Chair of the Advancement Committee, to thank our community for your generous support in the 2019–2020 school year. The support of our community never wavered throughout a challenging time for all. To echo last year’s Inly Fund theme, our community demonstrated that it is truly All IN for Inly. It has been a privilege to work alongside such dedicated Board Members, who contribute their talents and time to advance Inly’s mission. We are grateful to members of the Parents Group, led by Suzanne MacKay and Kristen Cabral, and all who helped to create such a warm and welcoming community for us to participate in through family series and parent education events, community outreach, and support for our teachers. We thank our Inly Fund co-chairs, Elizabeth Feeherry and Sarah Lucey and their team of volunteers who led Inly to another record setting year, with over $234,000 in gifts to the Inly Fund. The impact of these gifts are felt across the School, providing critical operating support for our academic, arts, sports, and experiential learning programs. We applaud and appreciate the creative leadership of Kelly Russo and Colleen Boylan Cooper, auction cochairs, who pivoted our annual auction to an exceptional online community event to celebrate and raise crucial funds during the time of COVID-19. “We Are All Inly” grossed over $143,000 and demonstrated the heart and spirit of our community. Gifts to the Fund Our Mission made an immediate impact by providing funds to increase tuition assistance for families, as well as help support the needs of students and faculty through new learning resources and improvements to our facilities. Thank you to our Friends of Inly— corporate partners who generously donated to the auction during such a difficult time. We offer our heartfelt thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff, who once again demonstrated their deep commitment by going above and beyond for our children. Not only did our faculty also achieve 100% participation in the Inly Fund, led by committee chairs, Jimmy Juste, Nancy St. John and Michele Van Niel, but also dedicated over $4,000 of their donations toward tuition assistance for families. We are grateful to our Alumni Council, chaired by Deirdre Duddy-Kennedy ’08, for their work to create ways to connect and engage our alumni family. Thank you to our volunteers, donors and partners for all you did on behalf of the Inly community. Sincerely,
Polina Haseotes P’22, ‘24 Advancement Committee Chair INLY SCHOOL 2020 GRATITUDE REPORT 15
