he Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) which will shape the outlook of Johannesburg in 2040 was launched in Newtown on Tuesday.

During the launch, which was also attended by City manager Mavela Dlamini, City manager designate Trevor Fowler and Johannesburg Tourism Company CEO Lindiwe Kwele, Mayor Parks Tau urged residents and stakeholders to take part in a campaign to determine the future of Joburg.

eople who are infected and affected by HIV/Aids need to acknowledge their emotions as part of the process of dealing with the infection, and seek further counselling from their nearest clinics, says Aids Consortium spokesperson Rhulani Lehloka.

She also explains that there are some side effects that can be ex-

sonalities, academics, thought leaders and opinion makers, who will serve as ambassadors.

“There will be town hall meetings every week where communities will be given an opportunity to engage with the contents of GDS,” said Tau. For the next eight weeks starting from 10 August, a specific topic will be discussed and will fall under nine themes of among others economic growth, community safety, transport, health and poverty.

The mayor explained that different forms of consultation will be used to encourage participation in the campaign. Those would include roundtable discussions with stake-

holders; media engagement through TV, radio and newspapers. There would also be school competitions and suggestion boxes in regional offices. “The city must improve its relationship with citizens and deepen participation to achieve these goals; it must also work to promote social cohesion among communities, building a shared sense of purpose and intent towards realising these goals,” Tau added.

The GDS launch will culminate in a summit in October before being adopted for the next five years.

The mansion in Nugget and Pietersen streets in lower Hillbrow was built in 1896, and was owned

The entrance hall still has its beautiful wood-panelled ambience, and the drawing room with its central domed ceiling is now a small pub. Every room has a beautiful fireplace and some have new tilework, pressed steel ceilings and wooden floors. Other rooms have been converted into a coffee shop, a bar, and rehearsal rooms.

A national monument since 1975, the Windybrow building has undergone several renovations.

he City of Johannesburg is embracing social media technology that could greatly increase its ability to reach residents.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter will be used to get suggestions on how to improve the quality of life for its current 3.8 million people, and to ensure that the six to eight million people expected to be living in the city by 2040 enjoy a truly world-class African city.

Mayor Parks Tau said his mayoral committee members will spend an hour every day on social networks to interact with residents on their vision, suggestions and complaints for the future of the city. "All contributions and suggestions will be considered. No idea is stupid," said Tau. Paper is in line with pluralism COMMENT

Women’s Day marks the anniversary of the great Women’s March of 1956, when women marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the carrying of pass books.

This historic march was a turning point in the role of women in the struggle for freedom. Since that eventful day, women from all walks of life became equal partners in the struggle for a non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.

Before the 1970s, women’s history was rarely the subject of serious study.

Historian Mary Norton said only one or two scholars would have identified themselves as women’s historians, and no formal doctoral training in the subject was available in the country.”

But today the latter is negative.

The appearance of women has become a major issue, more than their strengths and capabilities. But for women of colour it is an issue of identity that can be traced back to their history.

Before the liberation of the black man, white was the highest standard, therefore white was accepted as beauty. A by-product of apartheid was that black women were trained that white was always better. Today we do not think this consciously, but it is still there and reinforced in more subtle ways.

Today we have the ‘super model’ and the array of products, which she markets in order to make us look more like her.

Look at any advertisement of a product on TV and try to point out an imperfection somewhere on the model. What you are likely to see is this super gorgeous model with a zit or blemish in exactly the same spot as other women have, yet lighting, make-up and computer programme Photoshop hide it all.

The media feeds us a dangerous message. Some men believe lighter skinned women are prettier, because of the media championing that myopic perception.

We should develop a business model that will ensure its sustainability, so it continues to provide a different and an alternative perspective to the existing dominant editorial views The Media Development and Diversity Agency would like to congratulate Inner-City Gazette on its one year anniversary.

Not a month of joy for all women Zinhle Phakathi

W

omen’s month is supposed to be whereby women are cherished and given recognition for what they are, and the roles they play in the community.

It should be a month of joy and celebration for our mothers and sisters, but as for some women who are struggling to get through each day of their lives, Women’s Day is just an ordinary day.

In corners of the Joburg streets one always comes across women who struggle to make a living.

Some plait hair, sell food and as for others they are physically incapable to do these; so they sit in the streets waiting for anyone who cares enough to give them something.

One is Mama Kiyane who begs in Commissioner Street. She is blind, cannot walk properly and

suffers from cancer, and this is the only way she can make a living.

She says Women’s Day or women’s month means nothing to her.

“It is just an ordinary day and month to me because there is nothing to be celebrated about in this life of mine. I haven’t eaten all day and it is nothing new. I pray to God and I have a good relationship with Him, He is my only hope and I know that one day help will come.”

Statics South Africa’s year on year comparisons show that the number of unemployed women increased by 70 000 in 2011.

It is clear that some women are still struggling and women’s month is just another month to them.

If you can, you may celebrate Women’s Day by helping women like Mama Kiyane.

he legislative or political function is led by the Speaker of Council who presides over meetings, which are normally held on a monthly basis.

The Speaker is strongly supported by the Chief Whip whose responsibility is to build relationships among the various political parties and ensure a well oiled governing party.

There are Section 79 Portfolio Committee chairpersons, whose work is to monitor delivery of the executive and oversee the work of the different portfolios like Public

Safety, Health, Economic Development and others, and report to Council.

There are Standing Committees established to deal with council matters. Unlike Section 79 committees, Standing Committees have delegated decision making powers relating specifically to the legislature, and are required to submit reports to Council.

Some of the Standing Committees are; Petitions and Public Participation, Municipal Public Accounts, Audit, Programming, Ethics and Rules.

The key role of Council in the current structure is to focus on legislative, participatory and oversight roles. Its principal and most substantive role is therefore that of a lawmaker.

The other key role is to facilitate political debate and discussion.

The executive or administration is led by the Executive Mayor, who is broadly accountable for the strategic direction of the municipality of Johannesburg and takes political responsibility as well.

The Executive Mayor is supported by a Mayoral Committee that is responsible for individual portfolios and reports directly to the Executive Mayor. Some of these portfolios are; Finance, Community Development, Transport, Development Planning and Urban Management and Public Safety.

Within the Office of the Executive Mayor is the City Manager, who is the chief accounting officer of the City and responsible for its municipal affairs.

The City Manager is supported by executive directors who are responsible for 13 individual city departments for the delivery of

key public services to residents.

Further to this are 15 individual companies known as Municipal Entities that are wholly owned by the City to provide essential services, community development and transport services, investment and recreation; to name a few. These are the familiar City Power, Johannesburg Water, Joburg Theatre, Joburg Tourism Company, City Parks and others.

Lastly there are seven Regional Directors who are responsible for each region, tasked with coordinating service delivery and urban management matters. Each region, with its unique character and dynamics, has an office with convenient access to many city services. * Councillor Constance Bapela is the Speaker of Council for the City Of Johannesburg.

Govt in talks with Islamists Abuja - In a statemrnt the federal government says it will open talks with the Boko Haram Islamist sect which is blamed for scores of deadly bomb blasts and shootings in the northeast.

The panel will negotiate with the sect and report back to the government by August 16.

President Goodluck Jonathan has named the seven members of the panel, including the ministers of defence and labour as well as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which encompasses Abuja.

Describing the panel’s duties, President Jonathan said they would include acting as a liaison between the federal government and Boko Haram and to initiate negotiations with the sect.

“It would also work with the national security adviser to ensure the country’s security forces were acting with professionalism,” the statement said.

A police-military task force in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, where most of the violence has occurred, has been accused of carrying out raids in recent weeks that have left dozens dead and residents’ homes burned.

Obama lauds African leaders Abidjan – US President Obama has lauded four African leaders and said the US will be a stalwart partner as their countries continue their democratization.

Obama met presidents Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire; Boni Yayi of Benin; Alpha Condé of Guinea and Niger’s Mahamadou Issoufou at the White House and praised them as effective models for Africa’s democratic progress.

“These leaders were elected through free and fair elections and have shown extraordinary persistence in promoting democracy despite risks to their own safety and huge challenges,” Obama said.

He added that the US is working with the leaders to help them build strong state institutions, effective judiciaries, strong civil societies and legislatures, while making sure that human rights are protected.

Bruce Wharton, State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for African Affairs, said by inviting the four presidents to Washington, the US highlights the importance of credible elections, building strong democratic institutions and economic development. “These leaders have recently been elected or re-elected via the democratic process, in some cases overcoming lengthy periods of conflict or disputed rule,” he said.

Attempt to bomb AU summit Addis Ababa – A United Nations report says Eritrea tried to attack the AU summit in Ethiopia in January, and is bankrolling al-Qaeda-linked Somali rebels through its embassy in Kenya.

The report said Eritrean intelligence agents were active in Uganda, South Sudan, Kenya and Somalia. The plan was to attack the AU headquarters in Isaias Afewerki Addis Ababa with a car bomb as African leaders took breaks, says the report obtained by Reuters.

The UN said while past Eritrean support for rebel groups had to be seen in the context of an unresolved border dispute with Ethiopia, the new approach was a threat to the whole of east Africa.

Eritrea has denied involvement in funding rebel groups, and rejected claims it had anything to do with the bomb plot as ‘nonsensical’.

The UN has slapped an arms embargo on Eritrea, as well as a travel ban and assets freeze on its political and military leaders. Ethiopia often accuses Eritrea of supporting rebels. Prime minister Meles Zenawi declared in April that his country would support Eritrean guerrillas fighting to overthrow Isaias Afewerki, the Eritrean president.

US troops join search for Kony Kampala - The US military has pledged to join the hunt for rebel LRA leader Joseph Kony, by providing logistics and surveillance support to the armies of Uganda, DRC and Central African Republic.

Commander of the US Africa Command base in Germany, Gen Carter Ham said the US military will facilitate the coordination, encourage and foster the sharing of information that

can be useful to the parties involved.

“This is the hunt for one man with a small number of his followers in a very extensive geographic area.

It requires very precise information which can be provided by people from his area of operation or from his camp.”

Gen Carter however said the US will not commit its combat troops because, much as the US Congress

AU Deputy Chairman Erasmus Mwencha said African heads of states, regional economic blocs and international organisations would gather at the AU’s headquarters in Addis Ababa to map out strategies to help starving Somalis.

Mwencha issued the statement while visiting the AU peacekeeping mission in Mogadishu.

The UN, which has declared a famine in two regions in the country’s south, says $2.5bn is needed to alleviate the crisis.

The summit, to be held on August 9, comes as aid groups step up operations for millions of starving people in the nation and amid criticism that African countries have not done enough to alleviate the situation.

her Gautrain has started running from Rosebank to Pretoria, and this is expected to take about 20 percent of traffic off the congested roads between the two cities.

The high speed train will run from Rosebank Station through to Hatfield in Pretoria and stop at eight of the 10 stations along the way. The Gautrain buses will also run along this section of the route.

However, the route from Park Station to Rosebank will only open at a later date. MEC for Transport Ismail Vadi says the problem along the Rosebank/CBD section of track is that water is seeping into the tunnel, causing the delay.

“Although safety has not been compromised, the Gauteng Province and Bombela, the operating company, are concerned about the impact of water ingress, above the agreed upon levels, on the longterm viability and integrity of the infrastructure,” he added.

He apologised for the delay in opening the next phase of the Gautrain. The proposed date of opening is the end of the year.

The Bombela Concession Company will be responsible, at its cost, for re-grouting the tunnel, to ensure that water stops seeping into it. The tunnel runs under The Wilds and Roedean School in Parktown, and the water that feeds the ponds and waterfalls in The Wilds rises from a nearby spring, and is therefore a constant flow of water.

At present some six million litres of water is being pumped out of the tunnel into the Sandspruit River, which runs around Gillooly’s Farm, through Modderfontein, and into the Braamfontein Spruit, where it becomes the Jukskei River.

Bombela was required to submit a tunnel works plan for additional engineering works that will be implemented to reduce the seepage of water into the tunnel.

illbrow police is appealing to the community not to vandalize police vehicles, and to report anyone who is seen doing it.

This follows an incident in which a police van was vandalised by unknown persons in

the community, who scribbled on the side of the van (pictured right) in orange paint.

Hillbrow police spokesperson Sgt Jenny Pillay says it is an offence to damage the vehicles.

“The police vehicles are for community safety use, and we at Hillbrow want to give our community a high standard of service delivery,” she added.

Remedial work consists of drilling small diameter holes through the tunnel floor and injecting grout in the surrounding rock. It is hoped that this will reduce the permeability of the rock mass, and thus reduce the amount of water that is fed into the tunnel drains.

“This is an iterative process and it is difficult to predict how long it will take to achieve the desired results; however, it is envisaged that the section between Rosebank and Park stations could be opened by the end of the 2011.”

Buses will be provided for passengers to travel from Rosebank to the Joburg CBD. Bombela CEO Jerome Govender was unable to confirm what the

penalties for the delay would be, but said it would be very small. “We are absolutely excited to operate the Gautrain, go and get your gold card,” he said.

The Gautrain will run seven days a week between 5.30am and 8.30pm, at 12 minute intervals during peak periods on week days, and at 20 minute intervals during off-peak hours. The trains will run at 30 minute intervals over the weekends.

There will be no bus service on weekends and public holidays.

Predictions are that 108 000 passengers will use the Gautrain daily.

It is hoped that it will take 20 percent of road traffic off the network of roads between Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The Gautrain route between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton Station opened in June last year, just in time for the football World Cup, and has proved very popular, and predictions of 75 000 commuters a week between Sandton and the airport have been met.

n response to a call for quality leadership in the country, the Christian Residences for Young Women NPO will hold leadership development training from 8 August in Braamfontein.

Organisation’s spokesperson Sharon Lindeque says for the city to overcome current challenges, leadership development of young people must be a priority.

Lindeque says the training will explore broad-based leadership development incorporating coaching, performance management, and work ethics.

“Africa needs strong leadership, education alone cannot produce leaders. There is a total uniqueness for all people, if you don’t make the right decisions you are a walking dead,” explains Lindeque.

A well-known corporate trainer Sue Anderson will offer her services voluntarily for four days. “Sue has transformation as her goal for the individual, organisation and community. She has been offered top jobs around the world but she is in the country because she believes this is where her God-appointed destiny lies,” she says.

Lindeque adds that Anderson will help girls recognise their own identity, value and purpose.

“She will also spend time in helping them discover and define what leadership skills they need to shape their own and other’s future, such as assertiveness, own branding, and the ability to influence rather than manipulate,” she adds.

n Monday this week Joburg’s MMC for Public Safety, Matshidiso Mfikoe joined the EMS in inspecting a slum building called Badge Creations on the corner of End and Kerk streets in the CBD. An overpowering stench of garbage floats in pools of stagnant water, pervading the air at the building that was once a clothing factory, but now houses some of Joburg’s poor residents.

up with cardboard boxes to keep the cold air out. This also keeps the natural light out, turning the interior into gloomy darkness. Alarmed at the state of the building, Mfikoe said stringent action would be taken against dilapidated structures.

“I feel very embarrassed and sad to see people living in such horrific conditions. Such buildings are vulnerable to fire, especially if greedy or desperate landlords don’t maintain them.”

This is one of many buildings in the inner city that have been hijacked by slumlords and criminals,

who siphon off rent from tenants.

Mfikoe said the inspection of the bad buildings was just the beginning of a campaign to monitor the safety of residential accommodation in Joburg. “As days progress more activities will unfold.”

She also noted that there was a need for the City to engage with the legal fraternity so that it could understand the City’s view on bad buildings.

“Dealing with such issues is complicated by court rulings that state that the city council must find alternative housing for the illegal

“The friend took cover and after a while he saw that the man had been shot in the head, chest and hand,” said Cst Malatji. He added that the motive for the shooting is not yet known and no arrests have been made.

Shooting in Malvern A man was shot in the stomach in Malvern this week. Warrant Officer Freddy Ledwaba, Cleveland SAPS communications officer, said that police officers were patrolling the area when they received a complaint about a shooting in Malvern.

“When they arrived at the corner of Cleveland and 24th street, they

found the victim lying on the floor.

He was shot in the stomach,” said O/W Ledwaba. An ambulance was called and the man was arrested in connection with the shooting.

Woman raped twice The Jeppe SAPS is still looking for one man in connection with an incident where a woman was allegedly raped during a recent house robbery in Benrose. Warrant Officer Richard Munyani, Jeppe SAPS communications officer, said that a woman and her three sisters were sleeping when two unknown men entered the house. “The men were armed with firearm and knife. The suspect armed with a knife raped one woman.

“The men then robbed the women of cellphones and cash. One of the men apparently raped the woman again before they fled,” said W/O Munyai. One man was arrested in connection with the incident. Police investigations continue.

WANTED : DEAD OR ALIVE COMPUTERS Armed robber nabbed A man was recently arrested in Doornfontein in connection with an armed robbery. Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, Jeppe SAPS communications officer said that a man apparently received a call from his workplace and was told to pick up a client in Bok Street. “On his arrival he found a man who asked him to take him to his house at the corner of Marshall and Betty streets in Jeppestown. “On their way the man asked him to drive to a hotel to pick up his girlfriend.

On their arrival the man told the complaint to wait outsidem,” said W/O Munyai. While he was waiting he was approached by a man who pointed a firearm at him.

The man took two cellphones, a wallet with cash, driver’s licence and bank cards. The incident was reported to the Jeppe SAPS and a man was arrested in connection with the robbery.

ith over 30 music events, the annual Joburg Arts Alive International Festival will be pulsing to a hot beat in September.

Running from 1 to 25 September, this year’s Arts Alive programme has a great diversity, covering music, theatre, dance, comedy, visual arts, spoken word, film and the ‘festivals within a festival’ for which Arts Alive has become known.

Launched on 20 July at the SciBono Discovery Centre in Newtown, the programme was shown on a video presentation to an audience of media, City officials and musicians. Arts Alive is undertaken by the City’s directorate of arts, cul-

ture and heritage, along with other partnering organisations.

Head of the directorate Steven Sack says everyone in the city must take advantage of a programme.

“With 58 performances, it really has something for everyone, a great deal of it for free. It’s also a really easy way for Joburgers to explore a different part of the city, much in the way many did during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. This is a challenge to our residents to get out and about, come September.”

He adds that diversity is the key to Johannesburg’s success as a city in so many ways. “In creating the programme this year, the team at Zanusi has delivered on that. There is something for everyone this year, both in terms of the arts genres on offer and the pricing, with many of the events open to the public at no cost, like the annual Jazz on the Lake concert,” Sacks points out.

Vanessa Perumal, the festival’s PRO says Arts Alive has been giving Joburg’s residents the gift of South Africa’s biggest urban arts festival for 19 years.

This year’s programme will open at The Fringe in the Joburg Theatre Complex with a specially commissioned work by poet Don Mattera and musician Pops Mohamed, which will have its worldwide debut on the night. It will be followed by a Season of Simplicity

by Agulhas Theatre Works.

Africa Unites takes place on 2 September, in association with Moshito.

It features artists such as Nigerian singer-songwriter, Asa, and Kenyan musician, Eric Wainana.

The next big event is the annual Jazz on the Lake event on 4 September at the Zoo Lake, as always.

This free concert has a jam packed line-up that will include Xoliswa Dlamini, Melanie Scholtz, Watershed, Rajasthan Rocks from India, 340ml, Victor Ntoni and Asa. Throughout the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival, there will also be an abundance of opportunities to witness a range of world-class musicians from other countries, including Brazil, China, Cuba, France, India, Jamaica, Switzerland, Taiwan, Spain, Portugal, the US and the UK. Arts Alive is the biggest urban arts festival in the country which plays a key role in unifying the residents of Joburg, as well as building bridges with the outside world through partnerships with the governments of many countries.

The Arts Alive closing ceremony on 25 September at The Mandela stage will include The Fall and Rise of the Phoenix, a new instrumental theatre in motion piece from the award-winning American company, Spirit of America.

The festival plays a key role in fulfilling many of Joburg’s key mandates. One of these is job creation.

In 2010, 65 000 people attended the festival and 500 artists benefited from employment, with a further 200 jobs created in associated industries. To make this easier, the City now has better public transport infrastructure, including Rea Vaya, and ease of access to different parts; all seven regions of which feature Arts Alive events. joburg.org.za

For the next three months, experience complete darkness with Dialogue in the Dark, an exhibition currently at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Newtown.

Daniela Dimitrova, director of Global Human Resource Development says the exhibition, initiated by Andreas Heinecke in 1988; takes as its starting point the ideas and non-visual perceptions of blind people in order to discover the unseen within human beings.

“The non visual exhibition sets for real meaningful human encounter and interaction. After you leave, nothing will ever be the same again.

With the use of sounds, wind, temperatures and textures, the exhibition conveys the characteristics of a series of daily environments like park and café,” Dimitrova says.

During the exhibition, visitors are led by visually impaired guides through a series of specifically constructed and totally darkened galleries. In the dark, ordinary routines become extraordinary experiences.

“A reversal of roles is created, sighted people are torn out of their familiar ways, losing the sense they rely on the most – their sight; visually impaired people are guides, providing security and orientation while transmitting a world without pictures. Within this new paradigm, guides open the visitors’ eyes to show them that the world of the blind is in no way poorer but just different,” explains Dimitrova.

Six and a half million visitors have experienced the exhibition and blind people have been provided with employment worldwide.

The exhibition, a first in Africa, is brought by South African National Council for the Blind.

The convenor at the market, Zahn Hughes says the market is a vibrant place for artists and crafters.

“We sell handmade arts, crafts, antiques, home-grown vegetables and fruits, homemade sweets, cakes, breads, and pickles,” adds Hughes.

The market has a jumble sale next to a food court where people can buy second hand clothes, books, toys, and kitchenware.

“There are no mass-produced

goods and all goods on sale are unique, handmade, handcrafted or recycled. Anybody who makes unique handcrafted goods, grow their own vegetables and fruits or bake bread and wishes to be part of the market can send their applications to zahnhughes@live.co.za,” adds Hughes.

The food court sells goods like cold drinks, coffee, curries, pancakes, prego rolls, hamburgers and doughnuts.

“Loads of handmade and handcrafted arts and crafts, food stalls, fresh coffee beans and freshly ground top quality coffee, handmade sweets and freshly baked goods are also available. Face painting for children, jumping castles and a special water bowl put out at every market for our four-legged doggy friends - this is a dog-friendly venue,” explains Hughes.

Energetic blend of styles and cultures South Africans will be thrilled by the skirl of music, light and movement that this big scale entertainment brings to Joburg Arts Correspondent The 90 minute, open-air SA Tattoo spectacular is uniquely structured to showcase 12 different groups at Montecasino between 1 and 4 September.

The performer will engage in individual sets of about 5 to 12 minutes each.

Audiences of up to 3 800 per show can count on an international cast of over 500 performers to provide thrills and spectacle on a scale rarely witnessed in South Africa.

The concept of the tattoo as entertainment started 130 years ago, although these once less formal displays have gradually developed into the spectacular and highly coordinated entertainment showcases they are today.

In recent years, tattoos have broadened their scope. Instead of being purely military affairs, they embrace other art forms that incorporate massed coordination, dance and movement.

The SA Tattoo is no exception to this evolution, and its organisers have sought to incorporate dance groups, stunt teams, and various cultural groupings that would have fallen outside of the staid definition of the tattoos of old. These different acts have injected an energy and variety into the tattoo that will ensure that a broader swathe of South Africans of differing ages will find themselves thrilled by the skirl of music, light and movement that this big-scale entertainment brings to Johannesburg.

were quick to secure. Their colourful and entertaining routines have thrilled audiences around the country, and have also played to enthusiastic crowds in the UK, Netherlands and China.

The group has scooped numerous ‘Best of the Regions’ dance awards, in addition to their two wins at the prestigious FNB Dance Umbrella, and a win at the South Africa Performing Arts Championships of 2005. They were also chosen to represent Gauteng at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival by the SRAC Dance Programme.

Formed in 2007, the Code Red Drum Corps’ membership is mainly made up of ex-Parktown Boys High School drummers who went undefeated in competition for four years, as well as winning twice on the local South African TV show 30 Seconds to Fame once in the regular show, and then again in the ‘Best of the Best’ show.

The Code Red Drum Corps takes its inspiration from the renowned ‘Top Secret Drum Corps’ from Switzerland, as well as many of the DCI drum corps from the USA. The Code Red Drum Corps integrates and fuses precision and trick drumming, as well as figurative marching, with a creative blend of traditional, African and contemporary rhythms. This crack team market themselves as ‘The Special Forces of Drumming’. They wear a distinctive red, black and white uniform and use marching band-style snare and bass drums. The group’s youthful attitude and energy make this original South African act a true crowd pleaser.

Community boxing tourney promises

H

illbrow boxing club coach George Khosi says the much anticipated amateur boxing tournament on 13 August will display thrilling action.

“The tourney will identify potential young talent in Hillbrow. It will be open to both males and females from ages of seven to 35. People interested in taking part in the tournament must visit the gym regularly to stay fit. We urge parents and the general population of the inner-city to come in numbers to support future stars of this world,” Khosi says.

Entrance to the tournament is free; gates open at 8am for the weighing session, then the actual fights will start at 12pm.

“The best boxer will be presented with a trophy. After the tournament all boxers will be afforded with the

opportunity to train with professional boxers,” says Khosi.

He adds that the tournament is essential to the youth because it will keep them away from the streets.

“This will also create awareness among people about available opportunities in the boxing fraternity. Through this community tournament we aspire to develop world class boxing champions.”

Through this boxing tournament stars like Osborne Machimana, Julley Tshabalala and Zolani Mogali were discovered.

“There is a lot of boxing talent in Hillbrow, the only problem is lack of resources to groom the potential boxers,” Khosi adds.

PSL to change soccer calendar Move may help Bafana Bafana get players released by their clubs Soccer Correspondent

I

n a recent development the Premier Soccer League is considering changing its soccer season calendar to be synchronised with the rest of the African leagues, according to Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza.

This however still has to be debated among local football club bosses. Should they agree on this, the new season will run from January to September or February to October, as opposed to August to May, which is the case with most European leagues.

The Pirates boss, speaking in his capacity as the club’s chairman on Tuesday, said the move was also intended to help Bafana Bafana, who have sometimes struggled to get players released by their clubs due to a clash of fixtures between the national team and the PSL clubs.

“This would also help in the development of the African game; more so now that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has changed the timing of the African Nations Cup, which is now taking

place in odd years,” Khoza said.

Meanwhile Khoza dismissed speculation that Pirates could be seeking to sign Bafana left-back Tshepo Masilela, who is currently without a club.

That was followed by a statement from the player’s agent Mike Makaab, who said Masilela wanted to join only overseas clubs at the moment.

“Masilela’s intention is to play for a European club this season, and we are not engaging SA clubs at the time,” said Makaab.

At the same time Melissa Reddy reports that Orlando Pirates have emerged as the overwhelming favourites to land Benni McCarthy’s signature.

McCarthy was keen to join Ajax Cape Town and take his career full circle, which would have also afforded him the chance to be closer to his family.

But, despite rumours connecting him to Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, McCarthy said Bucs are the best option for him.
