Sci-Bono Discovery Centre is celebrating National Science Week up to 4 August.

In a press statement the organisation said it is the centre of science exploration for thousands of children and parents, as they celebrate the theme of ‘Scientific areas in

which South Africa has a competitive edge’.

“From the fields of palaeontology and the discovery of Mrs Ples to the building of the most powerful telescope right in our own backyard, the programme offers something for everyone. There are daily talks from distinguished scientists and organisations such as the Bernard Price Institute of Palaeontology,

the CSIR, Sharp Electronics, DOW Chemicals to name a few. Nano Materials, water purification, Chemistry careers and how to race a solar car are some of the things discussed during the presentations.”

The statement added that for those who take a more hands on approach there will be dozens of exhibitors in addition to the over 350 permanent exhibitions in the centre.

Poachers get six years Polokwane - On Monday the Makhado Magistrate’s Court convicted two rhino poachers and sentenced them to six years imprisonment, Limpopo police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Enock Mutungi, 38, and Mozambican Daniel Dumusani, 48, were found guilty of rhino poaching in Masisi, in the Kruger National Park.

Meanwhile, three men appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday after they were arrested at the park. They were detained when they were allegedly found in possession of firearms and ammunition on Sunday.

“During their appearance they were charged with illegal hunting, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and trespassing,” Mulaudzi said.

The men, Gaspara Chabalala, Antoni Chabalala and Ronald Baloyi were expected to appear again at the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Lonmin worker shot dead Rustenburg - North West police have announced that a 49-year-old Lonmin worker was shot dead in Wonderkop near Marikana on Sunday night.

The SAPS’ Col Sabata Mokgwabone said the victim was on his way to work when approached by unknown men who shot him in the body and neck. “The suspects allegedly fled in a white Toyota Corolla with Gauteng registration numbers.”

He said the motive of the shooting is unknown, and no arrests were made. “Preliminary investigations revealed that four shots were fired and that the victim is a Lonmin employee,” he said.

He added that it was not clear if the shooting was related to other murder cases in the area, or linked to a rivalry between National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM) and Association of Mineworkers’ and Construction Union (Amcu) at the Lonmin platinum mine in Rustenburg.

In a separate incident, a taxi owner was shot dead and another man wounded at the Marikana taxi rank, said Col Mokgwabone. The injured man was taken to hospital.

“The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage; and the incident is not linked to previous murder cases that were reported,” he added.

Deadly Zamazama clash Germiston - Ekurhuleni emergency management services says seven illegal miners have died and 12 wounded in a clash in a mine shaft in Brakpan North on Tuesday.

Senior district manager Roggers Mamaila said the mine rescue services retrieved seven bodies. Rescue workers initially thought there were only four bodies underground, but had found six bodies on Level Two of Shaft Seven, and one in Shaft 11. “Today they will go to shaft seven, level three just to check that we leave no bodies down there,” Mamaila said.

On Monday, a 12th illegal miner was rescued from the mine. “He just has a broken leg. For someone who went through such an ordeal he looks fine,” Mamaila said.

He was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital.

The other 11 rescued had injuries, including gunshot wounds, and some needed amputations. Emergency services were alerted to the violence at the mine on Sunday.

Mamaila said shots were fired during an underground clash between two groups of illegal miners on Thursday. Mamaila said the rescue mission for the illegal miners involved the police and the Mineral Resources department.

Third cop killing in two days

Cape Town - An off-duty policeman stationed at Philippi East was shot dead in Mitchells Plain, police said on Tuesday; the third police killing in the city since Sunday.

Lt-Col Tembinkosi Kinana said two unidentified men knocked on the sergeant’s door at his Montclaire home around 9pm on Monday.

They fired several shots at him and then entered the house, demanding his firearm in a safe. They ran away and the officer died at the scene. A case of armed robbery and murder was being investigated and no arrests had been made.

Lt-Col Kinana said: “We will not be side-tracked by criminals, we will not sleep until the culprits are caught.”

Two policemen were shot in separate incidents. A 36-yearold constable was killed on duty in Spine Road, Mitchells Plain, around 8pm on Sunday. An hour later a 40-year-old sergeant was shot in his Khayelitsha home while getting ready to go to work. He died on his way to hospital. No arrests had been made for either attack.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said the Western Cape safety department’s criticism of the police opened them up to criminal attack. Community safety MEC Dan Plato condemned the minister’s comments, accusing him of “playing politics” while people were being killed. The DA accused Mthethwa of trying to score political points.

Durban - A family is desperately searching for their 10 year-old child who was allegedly kidnapped from Seaview Primary on Tuesday.

The child’s grandmother, Lesley Raynard says the 10-year-old Mckayla Rutgers was taken from outside her school at about 10.30am on Tuesday. Raynard says she was just about to leave home to pick up Mckayla when she received a call from the school saying she had been taken by a family member.

East Coast residents have flooded Newswatch with emails expressing their concern about the girl. A message is circulating on social messaging sites about the kidnapping. Raynard has sent out a desperate plea for her return.

She also said police told her that the registration number provided by witnesses as the vehicle the kidnapper made off with is not a silver-grey Corsa bakkie, but a Toyota Hilux.

ince 2004 St John Vision Care, an NPO established 120 years ago has provided free eye testing and glasses to almost 3 000 people from needy communities, spokesperson Phuti Kgomo says.

He explains that the beneficiaries are residents of old age homes, children’s homes and the disabled.

“Our most recent beneficiaries are the Soweto Old Age Home, Gerald FitzPatrick Old Age Home, Sizanani Centre for Children and the Philip Kushlick School for Cerebral Palsied Children, just to name a few. We do this as part of our social responsibility to our people,” Kgomo says.

He adds that the NPO holds Pensioners’ Day draw every Tuesday at their Bara and Braamfontein Eye Clinics, where a lucky pensioner receives free a pair of prescription glasses.

“Our Pretoria and Westbury Eye Clinics hold theirs every Wednesday. This offer started in April and runs up to the close of business in December. This is done for the benefit of our senior citizens who are not residents of Old Age Homes.”

Kgomo adds that the offers are for those needy people, and not for able-bodied people who plead poverty. “For everyone else we offer top of the range quality glasses at budget prices. From the young to the aged there is everything for everyone, from reading glasses, bifocals, multi-focals to fashion glasses.

Govt defies call to resign Tunis - Prime Minister Ali Larayedh has called a general election for December 17 after an emergency meeting to ease tensions as protests demanded the Islamist government to resign.

Last week’s killing of opposition politician Mohammed Brahmi has plunged the country into protests in Tunis and Sidi Bouzid, both of which police dispersed with teargas. The government blamed the killing of Brahmi on a cell linked to al-Qaeda, which denied it.

Larayedh has defied calls led by the Ettakatol party, part of the ruling coalition led by the Islamist Ennahda party, that the government should dissolve. “This government will stay in office, we have a duty that we will exercise to the end. The National Constituent Assembly will complete the electoral code by October 23.”

He estimated that 80 percent of the work on a new constitution had been completed. Thousands of people demonstrated against the government and dozens of legislators have suspended their membership.

Ettakatol leader Lobni Jribi said: “We need a unity government that represents the broadest consensus. If Ennahda refuses, we will withdraw from government.”

Tripoli - A former minister in late Muammar Gaddafi’s government has been sentenced to death for a role in repressing protests in the 2011 uprising.

A court in Misrata found Ahmed Ibrahim guilty of undermining national security and plotting to kill civilians.

He was condemned to execution by firing squad.

It is the first known death sentence given to a member of the former government’s inner-circle.

Ibrahim, a relative of Gaddafi, was captured in Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte.

He served as education and information minister in the 1980s, and he banned the English language from school curricula for a decade. He was also a high-ranking member of the much feared, ‘revolutionary committees’ - groups of regime loyalists who enforced Gaddafi’s power.

Libyan authorities are keen to see Gaddafi’s family and loyalists punished for their support of his 42-year rule, but human rights activists have raised concerns about whether legal proceedings meet international standards.

UN condemns DRC fighting Kinshasa - Recent fighting in the region has UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon concerned; after hopes were raised for the recently agreed Peace, Security and Cooperation (PSC) Framework for the Great Lakes Region of Africa.

At the UN, US Secretary of State John Kerry chaired a discussion on the situation surrounding eastern DR Congo and its neighbours Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda. The Security Council approved a presidential statement on the conflict, commending the PSC and its signatories, but also criticizing some of them for not living up the accord. “The Security Council calls on the DRC to expand security sector reform, consolidate state authority, make progress on decentralization, and further reconciliation, and democratization,” it said.

The statement also called on the countries to respect the sovereignty of neighbours, urging them not to interfere in their internal affairs or harbour fugitives.

“The Council calls on all countries of the region not to tolerate or support armed groups,” the statement said. World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said: “The eastern DRC is a good example of a tragedy with an immense human cost that has gone on for too long.”

Genocide suspect transferred Kigali - The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha, Tanzania, has transferred to Rwanda genocide suspect Bernard Munyagishari.

The former head of the genocidal MRND party in Gisenyi prefecture was in pre-trial detention.

Munyagishari’s transfer came after he lost a petition for a stay of his transfer

from ICTR to Kigali. He was arrested in May 2011 in DR Congo and charged with genocide and rape, as crimes against humanity.

Munyagishari arrived at the Kigali International Airport escorted by ICTR officials. He was delivered to Rwandan prosecutors, and police took him to Kigali Central Prison.

Uwinkindi, who was transferred by the ICTR in April last year. Prosecution spokesperson Alain Mukuralinda thanked the ICTR for its confidence in the Rwandan justice system.

Harare – The counting of votes is under way soon after general elections that were held on Wednesday this week, and the results are due by Monday.

Voter turnout was high in a fierce contest between President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF and PM Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC. African monitors say voting on was peaceful, but the MDC claims the electoral roll was tampered with. Mugabe, 89, has said he will step down after 33 years in power if he loses. Zanu-PF and the MDC have shared an uneasy coalition since 2009 under a deal brokered to end deadly violence after a disputed 2008 presidential poll.

To be declared a winner, a presidential candidate must win more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate reaches this mark, a run-off will be held on 11 September. The polls were the first under the new constitution approved in a referendum in March.

The government barred Western observers from monitoring the elections, but the AU, SADC and local organisations were accredited. The AU described the polling as ‘orderly and peaceful’, while the Zimbabwe Election Support Network said besides the long queues voting was ‘smooth’.

auteng Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros (pictured) has announced his retirement, and is expected to leave his position on 15 August when his contract ends.

Petros made the announcement to senior staff at a function at Mogale City. He was appointed Gauteng police commissioner in 2010.

Petros joined the SAPS in 1995 and has served in various positions within the police, including as Western Cape police commissioner for seven years.

Police spokesperson Solomon Makgale said provincial commissioners can only serve two five year terms.

“General Petros has served his two terms. He spent seven years in the Western Cape as provincial commissioner and nearly three years in Gauteng.”

Meanwhile Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has commended the commissioner for the work he has done.

“I am not prepared to speculate about who will replace him, I think he has worked well,” he said.

Crime Line, the anonymous tip-off service, says the news that General Petros is leaving SAPS has come as ‘a shock’. Crime Line leader Yusuf Abramjee says Petros’ resignation is a big loss for SAPS and the people of South Africa.

“He always supported public/private partnerships. We have worked closely with him over the years as provincial commissioner of Western Cape and Gauteng respectively. He is a dedicated police officer who always shows leadership excellence. He must be credited for starting sector policing in the Western Cape and bringing it to Gauteng, which eventually became a national initiative,” Abramjee says.

Petros joined the SAPS in 1995 and was appointed as Gauteng police commissioner in 2010. He previously served seven years as police commissioner in the Western Cape.

“Crime Line engaged General Petros regularly and he has supported initiatives like Crime Line with passion and commitment. He always ensured that tip-offs were followed-up and promoted the role of communities to work with the police. Whenever we raised issues with him, General Petros responded immediately. We wish him well in his future plans and we believe he still has a role to play in creating a safer SA. We trust his expertise and experience will be used to the benefit of South Africans,” Abramjee said.

He added that his organisation hopes that the new commissioner will carry on the legacy of building and strengthening private/public partnerships.

Dance Umbrella celebrates 25 yrs Di Sparks

T

he Dance Umbrella Festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary all over Joburg from August 31 to September 15. The programme, part of the Joburg Arts Alive International Festival, will reflect the remarkable history and ongoing growth of contemporary dance in South Africa.

The first week of Dance Umbrella 2013 will include local and international companies, and opens with a work called Cover Up by Mandafounis-Mazliah-Zahry, three dancers from the William Forsythe Company in Germany. Cover Up is a multi-media work that looks at impressions and how it affects people differently. Presented in partnership with the Goethe Institut-Johannesburg it will be at the Dance Factory on August 31 and September 1.

The Wits Theatre will rock with the evergreen, ever-popular Stepping Stones programme. Groups from all

over Gauteng - youth groups, community groups and students, will present their work. Entrance to this day-long programme is free.

Fana Tshabalala, (pictured above) the Standard Bank Young Arts Award recipient for Dance 2013, will present his commissioned work Indumba at the Dance Factory. With this work he looks at the tradition of cleansing body and soul, within the African culture. The doyenne of contemporary dance, Adele Blank will present a new, commissioned work called Blank Page at the Market Theatre.

Blank will recapture some of the celebrated work she has created over the past 50 years, working with many dancers from both past and present. Blank Page is a celebration of her remarkable life in dance.

A Mixed Bill programme featuring choreographers Reginald Danster, Sunnyboy Motau, Thamsanqa Majela, Liyabuya Gongo, Nthabiseng Segoe and Joni Barnard with Kieron Jina, will be at the Wits Downstairs Theatre on September 5 and 6.

I Feel Ya, the collaboration between Moving into Dance Mophatong, Zuluboy and the Cross Over Dance Company from the Netherlands, will be presented at the Market Theatre on September 7 and 8.

I Feel Ya is presented in partnership with the Fonds Podium Kunsten Netherlands.

There will be plenty more presentations from many other local and international artistsduring the period.

Imagine the world’s best athletic circus acts performing near impossible stunts right before your eyes. Now imagine watching them perform with mind-boggling grace and strength to an inspiring soundtrack of the greatest classics, provided by the renowned Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

This is Cirque de la Symphonie, a new production, which was formed to bring the magic of cirque to the concert hall.

Promoter Charl van Heyningen said: “With Cirque de la Symphonie performing to tremendous acclaim in some of the world’s most prolific concert halls and opera houses such as Sydney, Los Angeles, Monte Carlo and Paris, we are proud to be involved with a show of such magnitude and splendour.” .

Joburg audiences will get to experience world-class aerial flyers, acrobats, contortionists, dancers, jugglers, balancers and strongmen, including world record holders, gold-medal winners of international competitions and Olympians.

They will all be performing mesmerizing routines, which have been carefully choreographed to both draw from and enhance classical masterpieces and popular contemporary music.

The soundtrack, which is conducted

by Theodore Kuchar, one of the most prolifically recorded conductors of the past decade, is perfectly in tune with the artists of Cirque de la Symphonie, who perform in front of a full orchestra.

Ultimately, the incredible fusion of these two great art forms turns the show into a veritable three-dimensional entertainment extravaganza.

Highlights include different excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen, one complemented by ring juggler Vladimir Tsarkov and another by Alexander Streltsov with his spinning frame and cube; Wagner’s Ride of The Valkyries, featuring Sagiv Ben Benyamin’s aerial rope work; and Tchaikovsky’s Valse from Swan Lake, accompanied by the spectacular aerial gymnastics of Alexander Strelsov and Christine Van Loo (who has performed at the Grammy Awards, Winter Olympics and the Miss Universe pageant).

“The circus acts are some of the very best in the world, the music to which they will perform is well known, vibrant and exciting. And we are thrilled to have the Johannesburg Philharmonic, conducted by a maestro, as the featured orchestra. We are extremely excited about this spectacular venture between the JPO, Montecasino and Charl van Heyningen Enterprises,” van Heyningen remarks.

Joburg will be treated to this multidimensional extravaganza of movement and sound on 17 and 18 August.

he Johannesburg Youth Ballet presents a return season of Hansel and Gretel at the UJ Arts Centre in Johannesburg from 14 -18 August.

First it premiered at the UJ Arts Centre in Johannesburg to full houses and critical acclaim last year. Now, following on the heels of capacity houses on the Main Program of the National Arts Festival, the Johannesburg Youth Ballet (JYB) presents a return season of their celebrated ballet, Hansel & Gretel, at the UJ Arts Centre, before it sets off for Durban.

This is JYB’s 3 City-3 Stage Tour of Hansel & Gretel, which is in part a celebration of 37 years of this Youth Art Company’s existence – nearly four decades providing opportunities for young upand-coming ballet dancers.

Johannesburg audiences who missed the premiere last year will now have the opportunity of being thrilled by the magic of this innovative two-act ballet, which has been cleverly crafted by four leading South African creative talents.

Hansel and Gretel is exquisitely choreographed by Mark Hawkins to a dramatic original score by Nik Sakellarides. To appeal to a new

generation of theatregoers, design and digital animator Andrew Botha brings an exciting contemporary element to this classical piece as he cleverly weaves the art of design and digital animation into the sets, while Malcolm Finlay of PENMAC integrates the audio-visual aspects to finish off this seamless masterpiece; a show that is both perfect for classical ballet lovers as well as the tech savvy generation.

The integration of classical ballet with modern technology further enhances the relevance of JYB’s Hansel and Gretel, ultimately providing a story, which audiences,

young and old, can relate to. It’s a tale of an economically marginalized family pitted against famine and how they will do anything to survive. This is a theme that is close to home in today’s world, where children beg on street corners and huddle beneath cardboard boxes to sleep at night.

Under the guidance of Artistic Director Kate Martin, the JYB features a company of 44 of the city’s enthusiastic and promising young dancers who proudly carry the banner of Youth Arts to a new height, while giving expression to the rich characters and dramatic themes during their solos, duos,

JYB’s Hansel and Gretel is a tale of hunger and hope, a reminder that there are many latter day Hansels and Gretels eking out a survival on the harsh streets of our cities. The story has as much relevance today as it had when it was first published by the Brothers Grimm 200 years ago.

Though dark and dramatic at its core, Hansel and Gretel is still a fairy-tale, weaving the magic of love, hope and happily ever after enough to leave audiences feeling mesmerized and inspired.

he Market Theatre presents The Last Moustache between 6 August and 1 September at the Main Theatre. This is a tale of Adolf Hitler, the man responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews, and millions of others around the world.

As chancellor and dictator of Germany, the mighty Führer was at the centre of Nazi Germany, World War II in Europe and the Holocaust. Widely considered the biggest evil of the 20th century and one of the most gifted orators, Hitler’s enigmatic character still fascinates the world to this day.

His reign of terror ended on 30 April 1945, when he committed suicide together with his partner Eva Braun, to avoid capture.

But what if he didn’t? What if the Nazis had one more deception left to play, one that could see them rise to power again, and conquer an unsuspecting world?

This is exactly the alternate universe born in the mind of NotOnTV’s Greg Viljoen. Written and directed

by Viljoen, and originally produced

by NotOnTV’s Jo Watson, The Last Moustache takes us to a world in which the Führer was successfully assassinated in the Wolf’s Lair headquarters in 1944.

But the Nazi propaganda machine devised a cunning plan to convince the world that he survived; they hired a troop of actors to take on the reallife role of Hitler himself. One of these actors was Heiner Schmidt, a once highly acclaimed German theatrical performer, played by Tim Plewman. This is the story of that actor, and how he was hired to play the role of a lifetime, with only the recognition of a handful of Nazi buffoons to look forward to.

Through Heiner, we are offered a true insight into what it takes to be the most absurd dictator that ever lived. That maybe this man, who had people across the world frozen in fear, was the biggest fan of Walt Disney films and chocolate cake; that his greatest speeches were crafted and rehearsed until every detail was perfect, and that he was impotent, cov-

ered in a rash and sometimes unable to control his bladder. Keeping the audience glued to his every word, the great Tim Plewman brings this oneman satire to life. No stranger to oneman shows, and best known for his award-winning Defending the Caveman, Plewman sends the audience back to 1945 with flair and ease.

What perhaps also makes Plewman ideal for this role is his ability to be equally at home in both comedy and drama, as the first and only actor in South Africa to win a Best Actor award for the farce genre of theatre.

The Last Moustache is more than just a unique perspective on Nazi propaganda. It tells a story that reminds that even today, what we are sold as the truth is often very far from it. Making us privy to just how the smoke is made and where the mirrors are placed – the show makes us think about the lip service, misinformation and blatant lies that have today become common policy.

The play has just completed its run at the Grahamstown Festival, where it played to entirely sold-out houses.

he MTN8 soccer competition starts on 9 August at Bidvest Stadium, where Bidvest Wits faces Bloemfontein Celtic in the contest that pits last season’s top eight PSL teams against each other.

At a press briefing in Joburg on Tuesday Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siyabonga Nkosi said his team is determined to start its new season with a bang, when the MTN8 competition gets underway next weekend. “We set ourselves targets before the start of the season and we are excited to have the chance to win the cup. It’s a fantastic opportunity to do well and start positively, and the team loves winning silverware, so this competition is no different.” Nkosi said.

Amakhosi were eliminated in the first round of last year’s tournament, but went on to win both the Premiership and the Nedbank Cup last season. They begin their pursuit of the MTN8 trophy against Tuks next weekend.

Tuks beat the Glamour Boys on the last day of the season in May and boast an unbeaten record against Chiefs. But Nkosi said the team were itching to set the record straight against Tuks.

“You have to be cautious of any team. For us, we approach every game the same way and Tuks will be no different. They have a good record against us but this is a new season and we want to do better, especially against teams that beat us last season.”

Bucs sign Stallions defender Soccer Correspondent

rlando Pirates have re concluded a deal to sign Burkina Faso defender Paul Koulibaly (pictured), who starred for the Burkinabe Stallions during the Afcon tournament earlier this year.

Pirates have been linked with Iraqi Al Shorta’s defender throughout the transfer window, and have reportedly finally acquired the services of the Burkina Faso international.

However, Koulibaly will only join the Bucs squad when the Iraqi league season is completed in mid-August. The 27-yearold will be an ideal foil for the injured Siyabonga Sangweni, who is still recovering from a knee injury.

Platinum Stars, recently signing Zimbabwean striker Takesure Chinyama, have added another player to their squad, in the form of attacking midfielder Vincent Khumalo.

The 25-year-old’s signature was confirmed on Tuesday and returns to the PSL after a four year hiatus.

In a number of concluded deals on Monday, Mpumalanga Black Aces added yet another player to their burgeoning squad. Clifford Ngobeni joins AmaZayoni, who have made 17 signings in total during the transfer window.

Ngobeni, a former Ajax Cape Town, Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows midfielder, will join Aces on a one-year contract.

On Monday Platinum Stars signed Sibusiso Hadebe and Mduduzi Nyanda. The gifted left-footed Hadebe has joined the club on a two-year contract, with an option of a third year being made available.
