illbrow police have recovered an M16 automatic rifle with its serial number scratched-off, says police spokesperson Sgt Jenny Pillay.

She says W/O Jethro Paul and Cst Dlamini followed up information about a hijacking that

took place in Houghton. “They entered a flat in Berea where they found the rifle,” she explains.

The rifle will be sent for ballistic examination to establish if it was used in committing any crime, she adds.

In another incident police arrested a 25 year-old woman for alleged possession of drugs es-

timated to be worth R3 000.

Sgt Pillay says police received a tip-off about a female dealing in drugs in Claim Street.

“Upon searching her 37 pieces of drugs suspected to be heroin were found, and she was arrested,” she adds.

Meanwhile, a case of armed robbery and attempted murder has been opened at the station, says Sgt Pillay. “The victim was shot and robbed of R8 000 at a construction site in Houghton.”

The victim was taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in a stable condition, Sgt Pillay adds.

here will be no long weekend for the hardworking Pikitup, which will stick to its usual schedule despite the public holidays.

Man arrested over girlfriend’s death Crime Reporter crime@gazettelive.co.za Johannesburg Central police have arrested a 21 year-old suspect in connection with the murder of his girlfriend.

The station’s spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele says the suspect allegedly pushed his 21 year-old girlfriend out of the eighth floor window of the Essenby House apartment building in Von Brandis Street. “The deceased fell off the building and sustained serious injuries. She was taken to hospital where she was certified dead on arrival. The motive for her murder is not yet known, and the suspect has been charged with murder.”

Meanwhile, Joburg police arrested two suspects aged 26 and 35 for allegedly being in possession of an unlicensed firearm

and ammunition at corner Plein and Klein streets in the city.

“Police were doing their routine crime prevention duties when they saw a male whom they then searched. Police recovered a firearm with no serial number and with no magazine from a 35-year-old man,” explains the station’s spokesperson W/O Mbele.

Upon questioning the suspect revealed that he had bought the firearm from a 26 year-old male, says the W/Officer Mbele.

“He then led the police to a place in Mooi and Pritchard streets, where they arrested his accomplice. Police recovered a magazine and three live rounds of ammunition from him.”

Investigations continue and the men face charges of possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition, adds W/O Mbele.

n a quest to curb drug abuse in schools, Jeppe police have conducted a drug awareness campaign at schools around their policing precinct.

According to the station’s spokesperson Warrant Officer Richard Munyai the campaign started mid last month.

“The Corporate Communications and Social Crime Prevention Unit visited high schools which included Jeppe Boys High School, Rand Private School, New Model High School, Mahlasedi High School, Nationwide School of Excellence, Jules High school, Athlone Boys

High School, Dominican Convert and Denver ABET School,” he adds.

During the sessions, police interacted with learners about the dangers of taking drugs, notes Mbele.

“We showed them video clips and pictures about drugs as well as the consequences thereof.”

The campaign was conducted in collaboration with the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), he adds.

he Absa Towers West (ATW) building has received a first ‘as built’ 5 star Green Star SA rating from Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA).

Located at the bank’s headquarters in the Johannesburg CBD in Marshalltown, this flagship development was officially opened in July last year by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. It has been built in line with the SA Green codes and designed to ensure sustain-

able synergy between development and the environment, according to the bank’s Head of Corporate Real Estate Services for Africa, Jon Couret.

He says the accolade recognises the bank’s commitment to the inner city renewal. “We are delighted that we have attained the most cherished 5-star rating. This is a great accomplishment, not only for Absa, but for the industry as well, since this is the first ‘as built’ five-star rating in South Africa.”

The ‘as built’ certification confirms that all green building strate-

gies were incorporated into the final building after ‘design’ certification.

The ‘design’ certification is awarded at the end of the design phase of the building.

“Essentially, this award means that our efforts to sustainability have been recognised,” Couret adds.

The environmental priorities of the building include the reduction of energy and water consumption, material sources and carbon emissions.

With the largest grey water system on the continent, ATW recycles between 11 000 and 13 000 litres a day. The system has the capacity to

recycle 43 000 litres a day.

“We recognise that sustainable development presents us with an opportunity to achieve the essential balance between business objectives, social development activities and environmental responsibility,” says Couret.

The council’s CEO Brian Wilkinson applauded the bank for its commitment to sustainable development. “The five Star Green Star Office rating represents South African excellence and it joins the ranks of a handful of projects that have qualified for this achievement,” he adds.

The building has been built on land that previously housed other buildings, thereby ensuring inner city renewal, adds Couret. “No greenfield site had to be destroyed in order to make way for ATW. Rather, we continue to play an active role in inner city renewal efforts and ATW is just one practical example of our efforts.”

Among other accolades the building has received include the internationally acclaimed Green Excellence Award from Frost and Sullivan, and JDA Halala Joburg Award in the category Sustaining Joburg.

Comment

Almost like the Christmas holidays, Easter has been characterised by unpleasant circumstances, though its intention is to impart goodwill and a joyous moment.

The most common characteristic of the period is the rush of people from one place to another. The largest number of people moving is usually of those from the cities to their rural homes, and also to holiday resorts.

This leads to large volumes of traffic in all the major roads.

That movement is often accompanied by a great amount of excitement, with people contemplating meeting loved ones they had not seen for long periods. The excitement often gets compounded by the consumption of liquor, which has almost become a ritual to some. Such a combination sometimes sadly leads to tragic consequences.

Another characteristic of the period is the large amount of unplanned shopping that goes with it. Contemplating meeting relatives, some people go out on a buying spree, hoping to please their loved ones with all sorts of gifts.

Shopkeepers in the Joburg CBD do not help the situation at all, as they exhort customers to buy even some of the most useless items.

There is certainly nothing wrong with buying gifts for relatives and friends, but such an amount of unplanned shopping often leads to dire financial circumstances, which become evident when the holiday period ends.

That is when people realise they no longer afford basic items like transport and food.

All this happens every year, and is likely to do so next year; why human nature is like that is anyone’s conjecture. A happy and safe Easter holidays to all our readers and advertisers.

Safety tips for holiday travelling

It is better to reschedule your get-together than risk the lives of travelling friends and family

hat a very special time of the year the Easter holiday is. It is a time to unwind, relax and enjoy your family.

Some fortunate people will find the time to travel and road travel numbers will be on the increase to all the popular local and exotic holiday destinations.

Holiday events and celebrations can be exciting times for family and friends to get together.

But this can turn into tragedies when people get killed or injured in traffic accidents. Motorists need to be mindful of actions that will make their holiday travel safer.

1. Before you start your trip, make sure your vehicle is tuned up and in good shape for travel.

2. Restrain yourself and your passengers properly in seat belts and car safety seats. Remember, the rear seat is the safest place for children of any age to ride.

3. Be flexible in setting your travel plans. Leave early if you can to avoid the peak traffic hours. If unpleasant weather is predicted during the time you plan to travel, change your schedule. It is better to reschedule your get-together than to risk the lives of travelling family or friends.

4. Stay fresh and alert when driv-

ing. Take plenty of breaks and do not push yourself to meet an unrealistic schedule. If you get tired, pull off the road into a rest area or business, get out of the car for some fresh air, and buy something to refresh you, or just relax until you feel revived. If that doesn’t work, find a hotel or campground where you can spend the night.

Forty-one percent of fatal traffic accidents are single vehicle crashes. These crashes most often occur during the late night/early morning hours and the late afternoon hours to drivers who are tired, have consumed alcohol, or both.

5. Keep your speed down. Give yourself plenty of time and dis-

tance to react to the traffic around you. Let impatient and aggressive drivers pass you or go through the intersection ahead of you so that you control the situation. Do not pass if you cannot.

If you follow these very simple and practical steps you may find the journey more pleasant and remember you cannot enjoy a holiday if you never make it to the destination.

Let’s all be patient and show some tolerance on the roads and dare I say it, some courtesy.

very year, thousands of motorists across South Africa set off on long, often exhausting journeys without adequate preparation of their vehicles or enough rest. Research shows that badly maintained vehicles and fatigued drivers are biggest causes of accidents over the festive season.

A well-maintained, well-prepared vehicle ensures a smooth start. Many breakdowns occur during the departing journey.

Many people still rush off straight from work to their holiday destination. In their rush to leave, they often skimp on checking and preparing their vehicles adequately for the journey.

This is often reflected in problems experienced during the departing trip.

Estimates suggest that fatigue is a factor in up to 30 % of fatal crashes and 15 % of serious injury crashes.

“A safe, relaxed journey begins by having your vehicle – car, caravan or trailer – checked and well maintained before you depart,” says Lize Hayward, Goodyear Group Public Relations Manager. “No one wants to have their trip interrupted by a break-down.

Many of the problems, however, can be prevented by regular maintenance and care. An extra check-up of your vehicle before departure can save you a lot of hassle and help you get to your destination smoothly and safely.”

Many drivers prefer to drive during the night-time to avoid driving in heavy traffic or during the heat of the day. Night-time driving takes its toll on the body, however, and this is all too often underestimated.

About 40% of accidents occur at night. This is not surprising, as nighttime driving decreases one’s driving abilities. Swaying in lanes, an inability to keep a constant speed and an increased number of steering corrections are the result. “If you decide to drive at night, make sure your car is prepared: clean headlights, taillights, signal lights and windows are elementary necessities for safe night-time driving. Make sure your headlights are aimed properly so they illuminate the road properly and don’t blind other drivers. Reduce speed and increase

It’s a fact that drivers who don’t plan rest stops often push themselves just that little bit extra to drive another few kilometres, and that’s when the risks start to increase. Fatigue limits one’s co-ordination and ability to multitask effectively; these are key to your job as a driver,” says Hayward.

• Begin your journey well rested!

Have a good night’s sleep before you set off.

• Respect your biorhythm. Depart at a time when your body is used to being awake and active.

• Don’t drink any alcohol before departure.

• Avoid any medication that may make you drowsy.

• Avoid peak departure times.

• Take regular breaks. Rest immediately when you feel signs of fatigue.

Go for a short walk.

Avoid heat build-up in the car.

Research has shown that high temperatures have the same effect as a blood alcohol level of 0.5.

Truce ends tribal clashes Tripoli – Prime Minister Abdelrahim al-Kib has announced that the tribal fighting in the southwestern city of Sabha has stopped after a ceasefire was established.

The five-day clashes left 150 dead and 400 people injured, and caused damage to the city’s infrastructure.

There has been a flood of weapons in the country and clashes between rival groups since the Muammar Gaddafi’s regime was toppled last year.

The head of the UN Mission in Libya, Ian Martin, this week addressed the fighting in Sabha.

NTC spokesperson Nasser al-Manaa said it critical that the government and all sides take steps to address the underlying causes of the recent fighting.

As Libyan doctors tend to the wounded, the military took over the airport and other key locations in Sabha.

Al-Manaa said a delegation of experts helped all sides reach the understanding that forged peace.

“Their courageous work made this agreement happen today. Life is back to normal.”

Tribal clashes raged in the southeastern town of Kufra last month, leaving about 100 people dead.

Shabaab loses key area

Mogadishu - AU troops have seized Deynile, a key Al-Shabab area, including an airstrip and hospital on the outskirts of the capital.

The Islamist fighters have launched frequent attacks on Mogadishu from bases in Deynile to the west. The group was ousted from most of Mogadishu last August. It is also under pressure on other Lt-Col Paddy Ankunda fronts from Kenyan and Ethiopian forces. Last week it lost El Bur to Ethiopian and Somali progovernment troops.

A spokesman for the AU Mission in Somalia (Amisom), Lt-Col Paddy Ankunda said AU troops, backed by interim government soldiers, were now in control of the whole area and had extended their reach beyond the suburb, which had been the closest militant-held area to the capital.

Last October Amisom tried to capture Deynile but suffered heavy casualties. After that offensive, al-Shabab displayed the bodies of 70 uniformed soldiers who they said were Amisom troops.

The AU denied that, but observers believe it was Amisom’s biggest loss of life in an operation suffered since their arrival in 2009. Deynile gives direct access to many other parts, including Afgoye to the south-west and Balad to the north-west.

Rebels seize ancient city Timbuktu - Tuareg rebels have seized the ancient city of Timbuktu, the last town in the north under government control, after driving the army out of its base.

The soldiers fled, some shedding their uniforms, leaving Arab militias from the Bérabish community to defend the town. The largely ethnic Arab town has been captured by the rebel National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), which wants a Tuareg homeland in the north. Last week the army left the largest town in the north, Gao, leaving it to the MNLA rebels who had already captured Kidal.

The rebels have been strengthened by well armed fighters previously employed by late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The army claims they have links to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which operates in the Sahara.

Timbuktu, a UNESCO listed World Heritage site, is 800 km north of Bamako and 300 km west of Gao. Under pressure from ECOWAS, coup leader Captain Amadou Sanogo has reinstated the constitution, suspended after he toppled President Amadou Toumani Touré, and launched a national dialogue.

3. Fit your jack under the frame near the tyre you are going to change, ensuring the jack meets the metal part of the frame and not plastic as this will break. Look out for “jacking points” which should be indicated on your vehicle. If you’re not sure where these are, check your owner’s manual.

4.Raise the jack so that your car is supported but not off the ground and loosen the nuts/bolts slightly. This makes it easier for you to loosen the nuts/bolts once the wheel is off the ground.

5.Jack the car higher so that the wheel is now completely off the ground and remove the nuts/ bolts.

6. Fit the spare wheel making sure that the wheel nut/bolts align, and tighten all first by hand and then using a wheel spanner.

7. Lower the car to the ground and tighten the nuts one more time until they’re snug.

8. Put the damaged tyre back into the vehicle along with the locknut/bolt, wheel spanner, jack and gloves.

Nairobi - President Mwai Kibaki has announced that oil has been discovered in the northwest Turkana region, and a foreign oil firm said it is the valuable light crude recently discovered in neighbouring Uganda. “It is however the beginning of a long journey to make our country an oil producer, which takes over three years,” Kibaki said.

Tullow Oil said 20 metres of net oil pay was discovered at a site called Ngamia-1 in Turkana County. This is considered high-quality oil that yields more petrol and diesel per barrel than some other crude discoveries in Africa. Tullow’s exploration director, Angus McCoss said many other sites similar to Ngamia have been identified.

He noted that oil was discovered in Uganda in 2006 and has not yet reached production stage.

Uganda will get some oil to market next year, but production will reach full speed by 2016.

The oil find was near the Ugandan and South Sudanese borders, both of which have oil industries.

t a recent by-law compliance session the South African Council of Churches (SACC) suggested that the inner-city’s Region F must create a religious unit so that the interests of the religious community can be represented from ward level to the council.

The organisation’s secretary general Rev Mxolisi Sonti said faith leaders must avail themselves to serve in ward committees.

“Blessings must come from the coordinated structure more than from individual churches.”

He emphasised the need for public participation between faith organisations and the region.

“This will strengthen the working relationship and uplift the objectives of the region,” Rev Sonti said.

He added that by-laws must be simplified by-laws so that the uneducated can understand and re-

spect by-laws without fighting with the region.

“Include faith entities in the regional legal unit to mainstream our own laws with the city by-laws, so that we continue to educate our own members.”

The information sharing session also focused on public open spaces legal compliance, advertising bylaws, the city’s overall by-laws, and noise pollution. Presentations were made by different city’s departments which included JMPD, development planning and management as well as the environmental health department.

The region’s Legal and Special Investigations Unit manager Victoria Rammala cited by-law contraventions by faith organisations.

“This includes holding religious services in open spaces, parks, building basements and using buildings illegally for such purposes.

Another problem is using buildings meant for church purposes illegally

as accommodation establishments.

Operating feeding schemes on side walks where there are no adequate facilities and resulting in the obstruction of traffic,” she explained.

Rammala added that by-laws compliance can be achieved by applying for permission to use the facility at the relevant department.

“Do not apply for consent to use the premises for something else other than what the property is zoned for. Also, comply with the requirements of the public health by-law with regard to the zoning of the property.”

Trevor Ndziba, the city’s environmental health practitioner presented legislations around noise pollution.

“No person shall play a radio, TV, drum, musical instrument, loudspeaker system or similar device to cause noise nuisance,” he said.

Transgressions of this legislation may result in the accused fined R20 000 or imprisoned up to 2 years, or both, if found guilty, Ndziba added.

n an interview with Inner-city Gazette Councillor Matsemela Madisha (ANC) of Ward 64, which includes Berea, Yeoville, Highlands and parts of Betrams said he focuses on establishing a lasting relationship with NGOs in the area.

“Our biggest challenges involve non-compliant residents who engage in illegal electricity connections. I once reported the matter to City Power and they disconnected the wires in Berea, but the same night the cables were reconnected.

Sewage running down the streets is also a problem,” he said.

Clr Madisha added that overcrowding and low commitment to cleaning the streets by municipal entities leaves parks untidy, which is a problem that must be solved.

“The other challenge includes illegal dumping of building materials and rubble on pavements, and littering issues in the ward. We need to utilise the rubbish bins that Pikitup provides,” he said.

cleaning campaigns in the area, and cutting of grass in parks, and that can be done with the help of City Parks with its cleaning equipment.

“I have been working closely with JMPD to resolve some of the challenges we have in the ward. I was thrilled to hear Mayor Parks Tau saying in his State of the City address that he will allocate 10 JMPD officers per ward,” added Clr Madisha.

Clr Madisha added that he has reported every incident stated but still has to receive responses from city officials.

“We will convene a meeting next week to discuss these issues with all municipal entities, and everyone who is interested is welcome to attend,” Clr Madisha said.

psychosis Ehllene Bekker Alby Michaels directs the Joburg premiere of K Sello Duiker’s awardwinning novel, The Quiet Violence of Dreams, at the UJ Con Cowan Theatre from 11 April.

His production of The Quiet Violence of Dreams is produced and presented

by UJ Arts and Culture, and marks the activation of the Con Cowan Theatre as the new home of drama at the University of Johannesburg.

According to Michaels, the production is not for the faint-hearted.

“When I first read Ashraf Johaardien’s stage adaptation of Sello’s novel the word ‘courage’ came to mind because I knew it was going to be a necessary part of the process,” he says.

True to the novel, the play deals with difficult subject matter. Sexuality, sexual orientation, sex-work and maleon-male sexual violence are explored against the backdrop of Cape Town’s cosmopolitan suburbs of Observatory, Mowbray and Sea Point.

Johaardien, the Head of UJ Arts and Culture, started working on the adaptation shortly after Duiker’s death in 2005, partly as a tribute, but also because he believes that if we are to continue spending time and resources adapting literature from or about South

Africa for the stage, this is the kind of work that needs to be invested in.

“Adapting Sello’s 456-page novel into a 109-page play script was a labour of love,” he says. “It took about two years to complete the first draft and, like the novel, my adaptation essentially deals with struggles that are iconic of what Sello dubbed the ‘postapartheid hybrid generation’. But the play and the book are not the same thing. They could never be. First there is the teensy matter of the 347 pages I had to omit. My first act of courage in the creative process for this production was to cut down Ashraf’s original adaptation, which ran at almost three hours in previous productions, to two hours,” says Michaels.

The central character in The Quiet Violence of Dreams is Tshepo, a graduate of Rhodes University, who attends college in Cape Town. Beneath his nonchalant and naïve exterior, he is the prisoner of a psychosis which started in childhood, when his mother was brutally raped and killed, an act in which his father was complicit.

This childhood trauma, which included his being sodomised, triggers a process that cauterises his sense of manhood and engagement with life.

Tshepo becomes a male sex-worker, a vocation which allows him to maintain both body and soul, while offering him a chance to explore his own sexuality at leisure, in a world that accepts his orientation. We meet the characters Shaun, West and others.

Meanwhile Tshepo metamorphoses into his alter ego, Angelo. A series of events finally leads to Tshepo’s decision to return to Johannesburg.

The UJ Arts & Culture production of the Quiet Violence opens on 11 April 2012 at the Con Cowan Theatre on the Bunting Road Campus of University of Johannesburg, running until 21 April.

Denille Chellan is a law student at Wits University, she says although her passion lies in modelling, she needs to study further while pursuing her modelling dream, so that she has the security of having something to fall back to should things not work out as planned.

Zandile Mnguni, a nursing student, added that pursuing a career in modelling doesn’t mean that one isn’t intelligent. “I’m beautiful, sexy and intelligent.” Internationally Zandi would

be categorized as “bootilicious” but locally she is referred to as “plus size”.

Her friends call her “Baby Phat.”

Lerato Sedumedi a BSC IT student at UJ got into modelling because she believes that she was “born to fly”.

“I’ve always loved posing and it was just a calling that came to me.”

Lerato Nkomo is sassy, bubbly, intelligent and outgoing. At just 22, she already has an impressive profile which includes being a model for SunGodess, VW Magabeni in KZN, and Sunday Sun Sunbabe for the last week of December 2011. A public relations student, she’s not just about beauty but has the brains to match it.

Modelling is not just about flawless beauty, but brains as well, because like any other career, it entails dilligence, planning and perseverance.

Rand expo kicks off South Africa’s premier exhibition and the largest consumer launch pad in the country Own Correspondent

he annual Rand Easter Show at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec starts this week and goes on till 15 April.

In a press statement the organisers say mong the events on display in the 10 day event are the international Flying Fools HighDive Show, a Rand Show exclusive, where some of the world’s top high-divers will dive from heights of up to 25m into a 3mdeep pool.

“There is also the Brian Boswell’s Circus, complete with elephants and lionesses. Military displays will be in the main arena, as well as extensive exhibits of military vehicles, arma-ments and other capabilities. The motorbike and trial bicycle stunt show, dubbed Man vs Machine, features motorcycle trials leg-end Brian Capper and five-times National Trials champion, Dylan Victor.”

The Animal Kingdom features daily bird shows featuring Mr Penelican the Pelican, owls, eagles

and more; twice-daily reptile shows with Snake Bite Jones; displays of reptiles and snakes; and a milking barn and kiddies farmyard.

There is also the Kids Theatre, where the children can see the Ronald MacDonald’s show, learn how to do circus tricks in the circus workshops, watch puppet shows and generally have a ball.

Another is a daily programme of science shows, hands-on workshops and interactive puzzles with Sci-Bono.

Also on show will be daring performances of a record-breaking motorcycle stunt through a burning tunnel of fire, from 6-9 April.

There will also be thousands of square metres of contemporary, lifestyle-focused exhibits, with great deals on offer and thousands of rands worth of prizes to be won from exhibitors.

The statement adds that the Rand Show is South Africa’s premier exhibition and the largest consumer launch pad in the country.

Started over a century ago, the

show draws visitors in their thousands. In 2011, visitors exceeded 245 000, an increase of 40 percent on the 2010 show.

“Held annually during the Easter holidays, the Rand Show is focused on families, providing wholesome, fun entertainment for the whole family while providing hundreds of square metres of exhibits and shopping relevant to the lifestyle interests of Greater Gauteng families.”

Highlights at the 2012 show include the new Animal Kingdom Experience, Circus Shows, a major SANDF display and exhibits, the SA Chefs’ Food Theatre and much more.

Independent Music Exporters South Africa (IMEXSA) spokesperson Renneth Tshisikule says in demonstrating dedication to developing locally produced music around the world, the group is inviting entries from independent emerging exporters and artists to be showcased at the most significant music market/trade show in the world, WOMEX 2012 taking place in Greece from 17 October to 21 October 2012.

WOMEX 2012 is an avenue that IMEXSA is pursuing to leverage the interests of emerging independent musicians and exporters.

WOMEX 2012 is the most important trade show globally and by submitting their entries, emerging artists and independent music companies ensure a good stead for their musical products to be effectively promoted at a festival that has the potential to kick start their careers on an international level.

veloping exporters and musical professionals benefit from the international expertise offered by infuential industry players such as record labels, publishers and established artists at WOMEX 2012.

Joubert Park fitness club opens ‘Aerobics is not only for the middle-aged battling with overweight problems’ Sizwe Mathe

he ongoing health awareness campaign conducted by the inner-city region has prompted the formation of the Joubert Park Aerobics Club.

Endorsed by Ward councillor Francinah Mashao, the club offers various aerobics lessons throughout the week, such as step, kata box, circuit, body conditioning and taebo, among many others.

It was formed by a non-profit organisation based in the neighbourhood called Joubert Park Youth Outreach Project. The organisation’s founder and club manager Sibusiso Mathebula says key to its objectives is to instil a culture of healthy lifestyles to the community.

“We tried before to open the

club but did not have enough trainers. The latest drive by the city to create awareness about a healthy lifestyle reignited the initiative. Many people do not get time for a gym and ignore their health. This club seeks to accommodate those people,” Mathebula adds.

He says aerobics is not only for middle-aged people battling with overweight problems. “Participating in aerobics several times a week helps with both body and mind, it improves mental capabilities. The club will not just be another sports gathering but a place of learning as well.”

The club will also add to the representation of the inner-city clubs in provincial competitions, notes Mathebula. “In many competitions we have been lagging behind because we do not have enough representatives.

With many clubs coming from the inner-city we will have an upperhand in toppling opponents from other regions,” he adds.

Ward Councillor Mashao called on community members to participate in the club. “This important initiative needs all the support from the community. The city has been on a campaign trail to encourage people to live healthy lifestyles, the club talks to that drive,” she adds.

The councilor assures community members that she will also sweat along them in the gym. “As much as we do not get enough time but keeping your body healthy is important.”
