International recognition for Boston students!

B

oston City Campus & Business College awarded accreditation with the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education in the United Kingdom. Boston City Campus & Business College (Boston) has been recognised and awarded accreditation as an Independent Higher Education institution with the British Accreditation Council (BAC) in May 2018. The BAC is recognised globally as an influential voice on standards and quality for the education sector, and provides continuing improvement in the general standard and quality of further and higher education in the UK, as well as in the global education market. The BAC currently accredits more than 230 institutions in 19 countries. Boston is one of only two Higher Education Institutions to have achieved the BAC accreditation award in South Africa. The BAC is additionally a full member of the following international organisations, which provide Boston students with additional confirmation of the standards of quality, as

well as international recognition, of our programmes: l European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA); l European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education; l The International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE); and l Council for Higher Education Accreditation (USA) (Affiliate Member). “We are so proud to make this announcement!” So says Boston’s Dean for Institutional Advancement, Dr Linda Meyer. “Boston City Campus & Business College offers a range of qualifications. Prospective students should use the opportunity to reflect on higher education as a means to secure employment, and to ensure professional career advancement, by completing a Boston programme. The biggest achievement for our institution in 2018 has been the awarding of accreditation with the British Accreditation Council – Boston graduates are now assured of exiting an institution that has international recognition.”

The biggest achievement for our institution in 2018 has been the awarding of accreditation with the British Accreditation Council – Boston graduates are now assured of exiting an institution that has international recognition.” What does it really mean that Boston has been awarded accreditation by the British Accreditation Council (BAC)? Dr Meyer considers why accreditation with the BAC is significant for Boston as an institution, and outlines some benefits for the student. According to Meyer, higher education institutions increasingly have to locate themselves within the global context of an ever-changing educational landscape. “At the same time, there is a strong drive to show how contextual realities shape educational theory and practices. In other words – higher education institutions such as Boston must stay in touch with the needs and skills demands of business to remain relevant.” “In this space, Boston needs to think local and act globally. Put another way, Boston must ensure that their approach to education is sensitive to the realities of life in South Africa while at the same time maintaining an active link with what is happening globally. Navigating between global and local is a delicate balance and manifests itself in a number of different ways. “Boston’s accreditation with the British Accreditation Council is a significant and strategic move for the institution. “The accreditation gives expression to the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) draft policy on the internationalisation of higher education”, says Meyer. Institutionally, this means that Boston carries international recognition as an Institution of Higher Learning. Boston underwent a detailed audit that confirms our commitment to quality provision in South Africa, which meets international quality assurance standards.

n inner City resident, Annie Juwao drove away in a brand-new Toyota Etios on Friday October 10, at the 250th boxer superstore situated in the heart of the Inner City at Cnr Jeppe and Von Bandis. Store manager Maxwell Ramela said from july 2018 Boxer Superstores advertised a ‘win a car competition’ inside the store at the opening of the Branch. “The customers were expected to buy anything that would cost over R250. They signed their slip on the back and included their name, ID number and cellphone number afterwhich, contestants would drop the slip in the car parked inside the shop. Ramela said, the draw was held and qualifying slips were picked. The finalist was then contacted on the day of the draw. “I am excited, I bought groceries for R900, and I entered the competition without an aim of winning,” said Juwao. “I would like to encourage other shoppers to enter the competition, my winning just goes to show that you can win big if you enter, even if it is for the first time,” said Juwao when she regained her composure.

Annie who has been a resident In the Inner City for about 9 years brought her only child for the draw. Colin Hemlson a regional manager from Boxer Superstores Headquarters encouraged shoppers that did not win by explaining that Boxer runs competions from time to time. “Boxer is currently running a competition in which our lucky shoppers stand a chance to win a wedding package worth about R100 000,” Hemlson revealed. Juwao told the Inner City Gazette team that, when she got the first call she thought it was a scam – she had to dial back to confirm if that was the store calling. Annie said she will use the car to transport her family around and will continue shopping at Boxer Superstores. Inner city conference urged to imagine new cities By Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

P

roperty developers and entrepreneurs applauded the City of Johannesburg for its ambitious plans to turn the inner city around at their first ever inner city property conference held at Braamfontein on Wednesday, 10 October 2018. The one-day conference was organised by TUHF, which has a large residential property portfolio in the inner city. The conference brought together property industry players from the public and private sectors, development agencies, listed property funds, property managers and brokers. The conference created a platform for sharing thought leadership between various stakeholders including the City’s representatives to activate growth and investment opportunities with the focus on affordable accommodations and rejuvenation of the inner city. TUHF CEO Paul Jackson said it was committed to the inner city development and it was looking forward to partnering with the City. “As business, we need to find a way to work together with government. None of us can run a successful business in an unsuccessful country. We need to go back to the basics,” said Jackson. Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Development Plan-

ning in the City of Johannesburg Cllr Reuben Masango said: “We’re putting together a fast-tracking system for inner city developments. The City has committed to fast-tracking applications of projects linked to the rejuvenation of the inner city.” “To date we have been greatly successful as many properties have been returned to their rightful owners. Hijacking kingpins have been arrested and successfully prosecuted and more buildings being are to be released for development,”

said MMC Masango. The City has released 71 properties for development so far to address the housing backlog in the Inner City. Lukhona Mnguni, a political commentator and researcher from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, said it was time for the government to start thinking about developing new cities. “We must imagine and start thinking about building new cities. We need new cities because there is already overcrowding in the cities. No

new city has been built post 1994.This results in strain on the existing infrastructure as there is an influx of people moving to the cities. Developers should become part of this transformation agenda,” said Mnguni. Mnguni cautioned about any sort of major developments carried out both by government and private sector without being informed by indepth research. “The City cannot force developers to do something without giving back incentives,” said Mnguni.

onstruction on the Turffontein storm water upgrade is currently underway. The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) completed phase 1A and are busy with phase 1B of the project. The design of the storm water system is in line with the Joburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) modern storm water system. This means residents of Turffontein will soon have a storm

water system that will reduce flooding, retain water, recharge ground water and prevent water overflow that can be harmful to grass and plants. The storm water drainage system project is now more than 80% complete and it is anticipated the project will be complete by end October 2018. The aim of the storm water project is to rebuild the natural water cycle and store water in the retention ba-

sins for a certain time, to recharge ground water and to use the collected water for irrigation and for household supply in Turffontein and surrounding areas.
