he Hillbrow community celebrated the opening of a recently revamped Ekhaya Park on Wednesday. Bukelwa Njingolo, Operations Executive of Johannesburg City Park Zoo led the walk about inside the park with the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development in the City of Joburg Clr Nonhlanhla Sifumba and ward councillor 63, Cllr Linda Ntombela. The renovations to the park cost the city of

T

Johannesburg a tune of R1.4 million, the upgrade included the installation of a full size synthetic soccer field; a new ablution block; park furniture embedded with a chess board and table tennis; themed playgrounds for toddlers; landscapes lawns and murals. Carel de Wit, chairperson of the Ekhaya Neighbourhood Board said aside from the big soccer tournament that the park will hold for Mandela Day, the park is a welcome sight for the residents living in the surrounding area, especially in Hillbrow where residents don’t have the luxury of park gardens. He con-

firmed that the property owners in the area will continue playing a meaningful role in the upkeep of the park. Ward councillor 63, Clr Linda Ntombela in her welcoming remarks requested the community members to use the park well and enjoy themselves but to also be safe. “The park is for the community and therefore they must work together with us to keep the park safe and clean.” Said Ntombela Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development in the City of Johannesburg Cllr Sifumba during her keynote

address commended the Ekhaya Neighbourhood Improvement District for establishing a forum with business, Bad Boyz Security, local schools, SAPS, JCPZ and the community to reclaim the park and make it a safer place for everyone. She awarded certificates of Appreciation to Ekhaya Neighbourhood and BadBoyz security group for their role in keeping the park clean ,safe and secured . Cllr Sifumba also pleaded with business people around the inner city come on board and assist the Joburg city parks with smart benches which will help communities with ease access to WiFi and the digital world. “Park safety is of paramount importance for Joburg City Parks and the Zoo, who played a huge part in the maintenance of the facility. I want my Hillbrow back, where children can place safely in their open places particularly in their outdoors. As we mark world environment week we need to know we only have one earth, so let’s take good care of our parks, trees and our open space.” Said Sifumba Ward 62 Councilor Clr Zama Shezi, Region F Director Irene Mafune also attended the event with other community leaders. “To the residents, this is your park. Please take care of Ekhaya Park. “Ekhaya” is a Nguni word which means home. Make sure that everybody feels at home when they are using this park. Always ensure that young children are supervised at all times and all users of the park are advised not to damage the park. Report any suspicious activity to the BadBoyz security officer in the park or call 011 7126600” concluded Clr Sifumba.

his thank you letter had its origins when three years ago, Mr Nel embarked on his tertiary study journey. Aiming high, he enrolled for degree studies at Boston City Campus & Business College. Determination and hard work led him to complete this particular journey on the stage of

T

the Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg, as he graduated with his degree. In fact so determined was he to have his degree conferred in person, Alexander flew up from Cape Town with his family to make sure he was present at the prestigious event. “We all have dreams, it is how we go about reaching those dreams that matters. I have always had the willpower of a warrior, I am not one to easily give up. My journey to my dream goal of a degree started at a very young age, the support of my parents in this quest was vital. Do you have higher education dreams? Well let me tell you, a powerful and determined mind is your strongest weapon.” Nel goes on to explain how important it is not to be beaten by the challenges, and not to give up. “There will be some rejections, the most important thing is to not let these get you down,” he says. Nel first applied to study at CPut to become an IT technician, but this application was rejected. Further investigation led him and his parents to another tertiary institution, which at first sounded great, but upon further critical thought, they decided against it, mainly due to inaccessibility of the campus buildings.

“Dear All I’d like to thank you for organizing and conducting such an excellent graduation ceremony, it was truly one of the best events/days in my life. Faith in ones abilities helps a lot, but each institution takes a chance on the students they select and once again I would just like to extend my gratitude to the entire academic committee for assisting me in reaching one of my biggest dreams which has now been achieved. I have come to learn so much about myself during my time with Boston. I believe that my future ahead will be very bright. I will do my best to keep everyone updated on my future plans Regards Gerrit Nel”.

Registration Certificate No. 2003/HE07/002.

This turned out to be a good thing for Nel. “Because it was only then that I discovered I could become the CEO of my dreams, at Boston City Campus & Business College,” he says with a grin. After leaving a stop at another institution, he remarked to his mom that without a doubt he wanted to embark on his dream at Boston. Why did Nel choose Boston? As any person with a disability will tell you building accessibility is a big issue, where other varsities fell short, Boston made up, with buildings that are easy to gain access to. Another reason for his choice was the great student support offered. Boston is a higher education institution, it’s no longer a school environment. Once you have made the decision to pursue higher education, you need to follow up with commitment. “It is up to you to thrive”, says Nel. “Students have to enter the field clearly understanding that they are responsible for their own success due to the fact that each student is seen as an adult, therefore they take learning upon themselves.” Nel comments though that the dedicated team of educators that guide students through the learning process aid the learning process dramatically. Nel continues, describing his personal experience at Boston. “You should never let anybody tell you getting a degree is easy, it takes dedication, hard work and nerves of steel! My first test of nerve came at the end of Semester one in 2014. I had always known that anything financial would practically be a nightmare and it was indeed so, but I kept my head up and pushed forward. By the next year, 2015, I had passed finance with a massive 60%”, (keep in mind that Nel was new to accounting concepts). Nel concludes with praise for Boston, “Taking a look at my entire time with Boston, I could not be more grateful to the board of directors and the entire academic team, for believing in my and allowing me to soar above my disability - and taking me under their wing to achieve my dreams. In the end my dream did come true and I now proudly say I hold a BACHELOR OF COMMERCE IN MANAGEMENT MARKETING.

Advanced self Defence training for Community Patrollers Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

adBoyz security group is bringing an advanced training course to Hillbrow and Berea areas to help local street patrollers and members of the community. There can be many situations when the security guards and community patrollers find themselves in a violent or dangerous situation.

B

According to Hendrik De Klerk Director at Badboyz security group “ it is very important to be trained properly to deal with such circumstances properly.” he added “It is a well known fact that the security guards and community patrollers cannot use many weaponry, this means that they will have to use the unassuming, regular items for protection.” The course is run by trainers with police, SWAT and law enforcement

backgrounds and leads participants through hand-to-hand fighting and use of basic things as Keys - According to De Klerk “keys appear to be very ordinary items, but you will be surprised to know that these can actually be used for self defence. He elaborated that keys can act as powerful weapon for self defence when used in the correct way. Pens - These are not used commonly and are in fact the last option for self defence But the best part is

that they can be easily found in the surroundings during the time of emergency. Pens are apt for a particular method of self defense known as the grass root technique. Pens and keys, are one of those items which the community patrollers and security guards will possess most of the time. The first training session took place at the Park in Berea next to Joe Slovo drive. More that 50 participants took part they were drawn

from Hillbrow, Legae and Ekhaya Neighbourhood, Non Profit organizations Fear Free Life and Urban Watch patrollers. The training initiative is supported by the Inner City Gazette ,Local community and the City improvement districts in the Area. TimeT Bomb One Rand doesn’t buy much nowadays, but it does get you a Time Bomb bet that could change your life.

ime Bomb is a great new lucky numbers bet from TAB that is set to deliver lifechanging payouts to those lucky enough to win it outright. It’s easy to play - all you have to do is choose five numbers from one to 30 and then play the bet at a TAB or online at www.soccer6.co.za Statistically, it’s tough to get all five numbers, but there’s a big payday in store for those who do. And if you are the only all-five-correct winner, there’s a guaranteed R1-million payout! The good news is that there are consolation payouts for any four and any three numbers correct. Over 50% of the pool will be returned to players each time, so sometimes any two numbers will pay out. The winning numbers are determined by the timeframe in which the first goal is scored - or that no goals

are scored - in each of five soccer matches. There are 29 time frames and the no-score option to choose from in each match. Each option or time frame is allocated a number with No 30 for no score. And, no, soccer fans will not have an edge. All the soccer knowledge in the world is not really going to help in predicting when the first goal is scored and it’s all about sheer luck at the end of the day. To play online you need an account with TAB. That’s easy - go to www. soccer6.co.za and click on REGISTER HERE to begin the process. A single-entry (one number per match) costs R1, while a multiple entry (more than one number in one or more matches) costs R1 per combination. There’s also a R1 Quick Pick option.

R400m intermodal transport facility takes shape Staff Reporter news@inner-city-gazette.co.za

T

he construction of the City of Johannesburg’s R400-million worldclass Kazerne intermodal transport facility in the inner city is progressing exceptionally well and is on track to be completed by March next year. The facility, being developed by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) – the City’s infrastructure development entity – will, on completion, transform the commuter environment in the Johannesburg Central Business District and create a clean, safe and welcoming place for residents, commuters, tourists and investors. This comes at a time when the City is accelerating its efforts to revitalise the inner city to attract investments in line with one of its Nine Key Priorities – growing Johannesburg’s economy by at least 5% within the next four years – which are being spearheaded by Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba. The construction of the fourstorey Karzene facility started in 2015. It will, on completion, accommodate 1 000 long-distance and cross-border minibus taxis and buses. It will also have room and storage facilities for formal and informal retailers and traders. Construction companies Basil Read and Umzo were jointly awarded the tender to under-

take the project. Several small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) have also been involved in the construction, which has created scores of jobs. “The facility will ease Park Station’s load in that long distance travellers and traders from the Southern African Development Community will also be able to store their wares before transporting them to their countries,” JDA’s Celestine Mouton said during a tour of the facility by seven ward

councillors on Tuesday May 30. JDA Chief Executive Thanduxolo Mendrew said the area around the facility had in recent years experienced a number of major investments that were turning the inner city around. They include the Nelson Mandela Bridge, the revitalised Braamfontein Precinct and Newtown Park. The touring councillors – Bongani Nkwanyana of Ward 61, Zama Shozi (Ward 62), Linda Ntombela (Ward 63),

Contact Lorraine Makgale on:

Nokuthula Xaba (Ward 60), Faeeza Chane (Ward 57), Rosemary Thobejane-Ndoqo (PR Councilor ) and Michael Crichton (Ward 56 – also visited Orange Grove, where they were brought up to speed with the Louis Botha Avenue Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system development. City Resident Engineer Isaac Morate said the scope of the three-phase R250-million project, being undertaken by three different companies, entailed designing and implementing

the Rea Vaya BRT system along Louis Botha Avenue between the intersection of Empire and Victoria roads, and Louis Botha Avenue and Lees Street. Two of the phases are almost complete, while the third has reached the 60% mark. Morake said after completion Rea Vaya commuters would find it easier to travel from Soweto to Sandton, with stops in the inner city and Orange Grove. Another project visited by the

councillors was the R87-million Turffontein-Rotunda Park Precinct development. The two-phase project, aimed at changing the face of Rotunda Park and De Villiers Street, is expected to be completed by July 2018. JDA’s Xolile Nxumalo said the first phase involved the upgrading of Park Crescent, the road encircling Rotunda Park, High Street to the north of the park, the intersection of High Street and Turf Club Street (to create a northern gateway to the precinct) and the intersection of Turf Club Street and Main Street (to create an eastern gateway). “New paving will be laid, street lighting will be upgraded and cycle lanes will be added to some sections. In addition, street furniture and artwork will be installed for an improved public environment,” Nxumalo said. JDA has undertaken capitalbased projects throughout the city since 2001. These projects have involved the investment of significant public sector funds from the City, Department of Transport and National Treasury. “JDA aims to stimulate and support area-based development initiatives throughout Johannesburg in support of the City’s Growth and Development Strategy 2040 (GDS 2040),” says Mendrew.

Despite the country’s sporting prowess, much of the sporting talent in South Africa goes undiscovered because it is hidden away in underdeveloped Inner-city, Soweto and Alex areas. Many youths’ lives from these communities are mired in poverty, most family units are being broken down, households are struggling with high unemployment rates, and youth are exposed to environments with crime and violence nearly every day of their lives. Thus, without sports opportunities to develop their talent and to be discovered, the journey from grassroots to glory is unlikely to happen for many talented young girls and boys in these underdeveloped communities. However, the sport of squash has made transformation possible and seen champions emerging.
